The vertical distribution and feeding of pelagic chaetognathsat 5°S, 160°W in the Central Equatorial Pacific wereinvestigated using a series of 0–500 m vertical haulswith a VMPS net over a 24 h period between 6 and 7 October 1990.The total number of individuals per haul was between 370 and688. Fourteen species in four genera were found at this station.The most abundant species was Sagitta enflata which comprised32.4–61.1% of the individuals collected from the 0–500m layer. Mesopelagic species made up 9.3–15.1% of thetotal number of individuals. Sagitta enflata and Pterosagittadraco were found in the upper part of the thermocline both byday and at night. The fraction of the population containingfood items (FCF) of S.enflata in the 0–50 m layer variedbetween 4.8 and 12.5% (mean 10.8%) and feeding activity washighest between sunrise and noon. The percentages of Copepoda,Foraminifera, crustacean larvae, Chaetognatha, Pteropoda, Ostracoda,fish and unidentified material in the gut of S.enflata were51.9,6.7,3.8,2.9,1.9,1.9 and 30.9%, respectively. Sagitta enflataconsumed food organisms which were mainly between 0.5 and 1.0mm in length. The daily feeding rate of S.enflata was 1.81 preyper individual, which was equivalent to 8.06 mg C m–2day–1. The ingestion of autotrophic and heterotrophic nanoplanktonby two estuarine copepods, Eurytenora affinis and Acarith bifilosa,was measured in various environmental conditions using the incubationmethod and epifluorescence microscopy. Egg production of thespecies was also deter mined in order to estimate their carbonrequirements. Assuming a gross efficiency of egg productionof 0.3, nanoplanktonic carbon ingested always met the carbonrequirements suggesting that, most of the time, other carbonsources could be unnecessaly. Nanoplankton ingestion by A.bifilosa(from 128 to 1693 cells ind.–1 h–1) was dominatedby autotrophic forms (60–97%) and was seriously affectedby high (>100 mg l–1 suspended particulate matter (SPM)concentrations. Nanoplankton ingestion by E.affinis (from 300to 1049 cells ind–1 h–1) was relatively stable incomparison, but this latter species seemed to switch its grazingpressure from autotrophic to heterotrophic forms when SPM concentrationsincreased. Thus, two copepod species, living in the same estuary,presented two different feeding behaviours, probably to maximizeenergy input per unit of energy expenditure. Such differencescould contribute to the spatial and seasonal segregation ofthese species which is usually observed.   相似文献

The effect of three different Scenedesmus food concentrations(0.04, 0.2 and 1 mg C l–1) on maternal investment wasstudied in two cladoceran species of similar size, Daphnia pulicariaand D.hyalina. It was observed that as food concentration decreased(between 1 and 0.2 mg C l–1), there was an increase insize, protein content, lipid content, carbon and mass of theegg, while, at the same time, the clutch size of the femalesbecame smaller. Such an increase in ‘per offspring investment’was reflected in an increase in body length, body carbon andbody mass of neonates as the food available for females decreased.However, in D.pulicaria this tendency was not maintained downat 0.04 mg C l–1 in which there was a decrease of theegg characteristics mentioned above. Although, there are notavailable all the egg and neonate parameters of D.hyalina at0.04 mg C l–1, the body length of the neonates was largerthan at 0.2 and 1 mg C l–1. These results show that, asfood diminishes, these two cladoceran species are able to respondby decreasing clutch size, but increasing the size of egg, therebyincreasing the probability of neonate survival. This tendencyis probably maintained until the food concentration is too lowand the females have to reduce the energy allocated for reproduction.  相似文献

The variation in the extent to which autolysis of Aspergillusniger van Tieghem occurs in response to alteration of temperatureand of the length of the period of autolysis has been studied.The degree of autolysis at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °Cwas 15–8, 23–9, 35–2, 40–8, 49–1and 56–2 per cent, respectively. Autolysis increased sharplywith the length of the period of autolysis reaching a plateautowards the second day at the lowest temperatures (0–20°C) and towards the fourth day at the higher temperatures.Theextent of the increase of autolysis plotted against temperatureindicates a linear relationship between these two parameters.The release of protein from autolysing mycelium of A. nigeris greatly affected by temperature, amounting to 1–9 percent at 10 °C, whereas at 30 °C it reached 5–1per cent. On the other hand, gradual increase of temperatureduring autolysis seems not to alter the content of mycelialcarbohydrates of A. niger.  相似文献

The ingestion rates of the copepod, Diacyclops thomasi, on thesoft-bodied rotifer, Synchaeta pectinata, increased 10-fold(0.07–0.77 Synchaeta h–1) over the range 50–250prey l–1. The saturating functional response curve appearedsigmoid but was statistically indistinguishable from a parabola.The response curve was more linear and 10 times lower over thesame range of density when Diacyclops was offered Kerarellacochleans, a species having a stiffened lorica. Diacyclops maximizedits ingestion rate on Synchaeta as a function of the availablegut space. Predation effort, measured as clearance rates, waslinked tentatively to changes in swimming speed of Diacyclopsand was a function of hunger level. Diacyclops, which were starvedfor varying periods of time, increased their ingestion rateson Synchaeta up to a maximum (-3.0 h–1) after 7–10h of food deprivation. The gut passage time of Diacyclops wasestimated to be 7–8 h. Therefore, ingestion rates (andclearance rates) appeared to be strongly correlated to the volumeof food in the gut.  相似文献

Diatom seasonal succession and interannual variability werestudied using laminated sediments from Saanich Inlet, BritishColumbia, for the years 1900–1991. Frozen sediment coresallowed fine-scale sampling of laminae for each year. Thus,three ‘seasons’ for each year were identified basedon species composition. Thalassiosira species were indicatorsof spring deposition. Skeletonema costatum was abundant in samplesfollowing Thalassiosira, probably deposited in late spring andsummer. Rhizosolenia sp. was most abundant in fall/winter samples.Diatom stratigraphies were related to sea surface temperature,salinity, sea level and the Pacific North American Index (PNA)using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). CCA showed thatspecies of a particular season generally had optima for temperatureand salinity characteristic of that time. Interannual changesin diatom species composition and abundance were most prevalentin the decades 1920–1940, with the exception of S.costatumwhich showed cyclic changes in abundance. Skeletonema was moreabundant during periods of cool temperatures, while littoraldiatoms were more abundant during times of heavy winter rains.Sea level was an important variable in CCA and while its relationshipto diatoms is not clear, it may be related to variations innutrient supply to diatoms in surface waters.  相似文献

The planktonic rotifer Ascomorpha ovalis feeds on large dinoflagellates(e.g. Ceratium sp., Peridinium sp.) and is able to extract theircell contents by means of its virgate mastax. This paper presentsthe results of experiments on the feeding behaviour of laboratory-culturedAscomorpha with Cerarium furcoides as food algae. Ascomorphaare three times larger than their prey Ceratium (by volume),but with regard to total length, their prey was even 20% larger.Ascomorpha showed a hyperbolic functional response curve witha plateau of the feeding rate at 8 Ceratium cells animal–1dar–1 when concentrations of Ceratium were >100 cellsml–1. The mean handling time (time for capturing and extractingone Ceratium cell) was 3 min. The shape of the functional responsewas better described by a curvilinear model than by a rectilinearmodel. However, handling times cannot be responsible for this,since they were too short to set limits on ingestion rates.At low food concentrations, encounter rates with prey seemedto limit the feeding rates of Ascomorpha, whereas at mediumto high food concentrations, Satiation effects (lower attackrates) seemed to set limits on the feeding rates. Ascomorphashowed a significant decrease in the exploitation of singleCeratium cells at high prey concentrations. This decrease couldbe explained by a saturation effect in which the partly filledguts of Ascomorpha did not permit the total extraction of thecontents of a Ceratium cell.  相似文献

Ingestion and clearance rates, feeding behaviors and life historyvariables of the marine cladoceran Penilia avirostris were evaluatedover a range of food concentrations encountered in nature (0.01–3.0mm3 1–1 of Isochrysis galbana). Ingestion rates increasedand clearance rates decreased with increasing food concentration.No maximum feeding thresholds were observed over the range ofalgal concentrations offered. Weight-specific ingestion ratesdecreased with increasing body weight. Feeding behaviors suchas mandibular activity, abdominal claw rejections of cloggedfeeding structures and feeding appendage activity decreasedat a food level of 0.3 mm3 l–1 of l. galbana. Peniliaavirostris had very poor survivorship at extremely low (0.01mm3 l–1 and high (3.00 mm3 l–1) food levels. Centropages abdominalis is a neritic, omnivorous, temporallyabundant copepod present throughout the subarctic Pacific andits marginal seas. The two main objectives of this study wereto determine how temperature influences the development of C.abdominalis and whether growth rates of in situ populationsmay be limited by available food. At 6.9°C, median developmenttime from eggs laid to 50% adults was 42 days and the averageweight-specific somatic growth rate was 0.17 day–1. At4.6°C, median development time to adult was 59 days (projected)and growth rate averaged 0.08 day–1, suggesting that 4.6°Cmay be approaching the lower temperature for development andgrowth in this species. The functional relationship betweendevelopment time and temperature was established over the temperaturerange in which this species occurs. The in situ adult growthrates between 10 and 13°C averaged 0.14 day–1 andwere generally lower than the laboratory-reared juvenile growthrates, which may indicate that adult C. abdominalis are foodlimited in the field during summer and autumn.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine whether thetwo cyclopoid copepods. Cyclops vicious and Mesocyclops leuckaru.exploit the same food resources. The food requirements of juvenilesof the two cyclopoid copepods were investigated. Moreover, theimportance of algae for the predaceous adults was studied. Naupliiof both M leuckaru and C.vicinus successfully developed intocopepodites when fed the motile algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.Chlamydomonas sphaeroides and Cryptomonas sp. Threshold foodconcentrations for naupliar development varied between offeredalgae and between the two cyclopoid species. The food thresholdfor successful naupliar development, when reared on C.reinhardui,was lower for M.leuckarti (0.3 mg C 1–1) than for C.vicinus(0.5 mg C l–1) whereas a similar food threshold was foundusing Cryptornonas sp (0.3 mg C –1) and C.sphaeroides(<0.2 mg C 1–1), Naupliar development time was inverselyrelated to food concentration. Food required for copepoditedevelopment differed for the two cyclopoid species. Cyclopsvicinus was able to develop to the adult stage on a pure dietof any one of the three algal species. whereas M.leuckarti requireda prey supply of the rotifer Brachionus rubens. Food composition.i.e. algal species, algal concentration and rotifer abundance,influenced copepodite survivorship of both cyclopoids and wasalways higher in the presence of B.rubens. Under similar foodconditions, mortality was higher for M.leuckarti than for Cvicinus. Mesocyclops leuckaru females were very dependent onanimal food. The predation rate of M.leuckaru was not lowerin the presence of algae. Egg production of M.leuckarti waslow on a pure algal diet and significantly higher when B rubenswas present. The results were used to discuss the life cyclestrategy and the possibility of exploitative competition ofthe two cyclopoid copepods.  相似文献

Photoinhibition of Seed Germination in Mediterranean Maritime Plants   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3  
Photoinhibition of seed germination was shown for Allium staticiforme,Brassica tournefortii, Cakile maritima and Otanthus maritimus,all plant species inhabiting sandy coasts of the MediterraneanSea. Germination of A. staticiforme was found to be typicallyMediterranean in regard to its temperature range (>0–20°C), while B. tournefortii germinated optimally at intermediatetemperatures (15–25 °C). Light sensitivity was morepronounced in the latter species and 50 % inhibition of seedgermination was obtained with photon flux densities of approximately0.1 and 0.015 mol m–2 d–1 in A. staticiforme andB. tournefortii, respectively. However, the slopes of the regressionlines of germination plotted against the logarithm of whitelight flux density are similar in both species. From monthlyexperiments performed under fluctuating conditions of temperatureand light, simulating the elimate of Athens throughout the year,optimal germination response peaked in ‘winter’conditions for A. staticiforme, while a bimodal pattern wasobserved for B. tournefortii (maxima at the warm ends of therainy season). In contrast to the other plants, a fifth speciestested, Crithmum maritimum, showed an absolute light requirement,probably related to the rocky habitats of the species; the optimumgermination period coincided with the rainy season. Pot experimentswith seeds of the five species buried at various depths confirmedthat maximum emergence is favoured by shallow depths (0.5–1cm). It is concluded that seed germination in maritime plantsof the Mediterranean rim is mediated by a photoinhibition mechanismwhich can be considered an adaptation strategy against surfaceseedling establishment at the harsh, sandy or shingle, sea coasthabitats. Life-long somatic growth and egg production responses of Daphniabarbata, Daphnia gibba, Daphnia laevis, Daphnia pulex, Moinamicrura and Diaphanosoma excisum were examined in relation todifferent food and suspended sediment levels, in factorial experimentsat 20°C. Food treatments involved additions of 0, 100, 500and 2500 µg C l–1 of Selenastrum to 20 µmfiltered water, generally from source lakes. These food levelswere tested at two suspended sediment levels in all species,viz. (i) natural source-lake nephelometric turbidities of 7–65nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) ({small tilde}10–70mg l–1 TSS) and (ii) {small tilde}3- to 4-fold enrichmentof natural levels (8-fold in D.excisum). A third sediment-freetreatment was tested in all species of Daphnia other than D.gibba.Growth in body length and reproductive output were assesseddaily for individual animals. Main and interactive effects offood and sediment on growth were assessed at selected ages fromday 3 through subsequent life using analysis of variance (ANOVA).Strong and highly significant positive food effects were apparentat all ages in all species examined, with the curious exceptionof D.excisum. The onset of maturity and fecundity were alsopositively related to food level. Sediment effects on growth,age of maturity and fecundity were variable, but tended to bemuch weaker than food effects. Both stimulatory (positive, especiallyat low food levels) and inhibitory (negative) effects of sedimenton growth were apparent, both between and within species. Performancein sediment-free water was very poor, except in D.pulex. Food-sedimentinteraction effects were variable. Generally, turbidwater specieswere influenced less adversely by sediment than clear-waterspecies, indicating the existence of environmentally appropriateadaptive responses. Overall, the findings indicate that lightlimitation of algal resources by suspended sediments, ratherthan the condition of high turbidity per se, is responsiblefor the apparently negative impact of suspended sediments frequentlyobserved on natural populations of cladoceran zooplankters.  相似文献

Nutritional requirements, functional response, development andreproduction of Cyclops vicinus were studied with exclusivelyalgal food. Phytoflagellates were found to be adequate foodresources for both juvenile development and egg production.Ingestion measurements were performed with Chlamydomonas reinhardii.The functional response data give evidence for low feeding efficiency,especially for the naupliar stages. A difference between naupliiand older instars was also found in their quantitative foodneeds. A higher threshold food concentration was observed fornaupliar development (0.4 mg C l–1) than for copepoditedevelopment (0.2 mg C l–1). The calculation of assimilationefficiencies suggests that the high food requirements are dueto low specific ingestion rates rather than poor assimilationefficiency. Development time decreased as algal density increasedand males developed more quickly than females at all food concentrations.Body size and carbon content increased with increasing foodconcentration. Continuous egg production was observed abovea food concentration of 0.5 mg C l–1. The results haveimplications for the life cycle of C. vicinus. Summer diapauseis interpreted as a strategy to avoid starvation of the juvenilestages. The concept of thermal time is applied to the prediction ofduration from sowing to maturity of calabrese (Brassica oleraceavar italica cv. Corvet), using a multiple linear regressionmodel. Given daily records of maximum and minimum air temperatureand total solar radiation, maturity could be predicted to within±7 d for nine out of ten crops over the four years considered.Within any one year the precision improved to ±5 d. Calabreseappeared to stop developing at a base temperature of 0 °C.Thermal time accounted for 74·3 per cent of the variationin reciprocal total duration and solar radiation a further 17·7per cent. The feeding rates of freshwater predaceous copepods have beenmeasured many times using enclosure experiments. Typically theseexperiments involve enclosing a known number of zooplanklonprey with a known number of predaceous copepods and determiningthe number of prey remaining after a set length of time. Variousfactors such as prey species and size have been shown to influencethe feeding rate of copepods. However, little attention hasbeen paid to the influence that container size may have on feedingrates. Using previously published data and some new data itwas found that container size has a major impact on the feedingrate of Heterocope septentrionalis, a predaceous freshwatercopepod common in North American arctic waters. In experimentswith Daphnia puiex, where container size varied from 0.3 to54 l (180 times), the measured feeding rate coefficient variedfrom –0.04 to –1.7 (42.5 times). Other prey speciesshowed similar changes, but the vulnerability of particularprey species to Heterocope predation remained consistent acrossthis range of expenmental containers. The reason for the containereffect is not known, but it is postulated that edge avoidanceby Heterocope may account for the observed change in feedingrate.  相似文献

The photoregulation of carotenogenesis in Rhodotorula minutawas found to consist of tow phases, a temperature-independentphotochemical reaction (light process) and temperature-dependentbut light-independent biochemical reactions (dark process).These processes were separately examined by regulating the temperatureand were characterized as follows: 1) The quantity of carotenoid produced [C (µg g–1)]and the rate of carotenoid production [Vc (µg g–1hr–1)] in the dark process were regulated by the lightdose [D (erg cm–2)] to which cells were exposed in thelight process. These relationships were expressed by the equations:C=9.1 log D–62.0 and Vc=0.81 log D–5.60. This photoresponsefollowed the Roscoe-Bunsen reciprocity law. 2) The induced state toward carotenogenesis, once acquired inthe light process, was very stable, suggesting that the proposedphotochemical product is stable as an inducer of carotenogenesisand decreases only in conjunction with carotenoid biosynthesis. 3) The photochemical reaction was oxygen-independent, but subsequentdark reactions were completely dependent on oxygen. 4) Postulated compounds related to the photochemical reactionwere not metabolized in vivo. O-Benzylhydroxylamine (OBHA) is a potent inhibitor of phenylalanineammonialyase (PAL, EC 4.3.1.5 [EC] ) and phenylpropanoid metabolismas evidenced by its effects on three plant species [soybean(Glycine max (L.) Merr.), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.),and mung bean (Vigna radiata L.)]. When supplied to roots, OBHA(10–5 M) did not significantly inhibit light- or dark-growthof soybean seedlings, but reduced (25%) soluble hydroxyphenoliccompound accumulation in light-grown axes. Higher concentrations(510–5 M) of OBHA caused reductions (25%) in axis freshweight of light-grown seedlings (72 h), but did not lower axisweight of dark-grown seedlings. Anthocyanin accumulation inhypocotyls of intact mung bean seedlings was reduced by 25%after 3 days light growth after treatment with OBHA (10–5M) via root feeding. Anthocyanin content of excised, etiolatedbuckwheat hypocotyls floated on solutions of OBHA (10–5M) and incubated in the light for 24 h was reduced by 40%. L-Phenylalanineand t-cinnamic acid, intermediates of phenylpropanoid metabolism,were able to partially reverse this inhibition in buckwheat.Extractable PAL activity (specific activity basis) in soybeanaxes was substantially reduced (20% in dark, 40% in light) asearly as 24 h after root feeding with OBHA (10–5 M). Reductionof PAL activity (specific activity or per axis basis) by OBHAcompared to control levels, continued throughout a time courseof 96 h. Mass developments of rotifers of the genus Brachionus, and especiallyof B.quadridentatus, occur regularly in the largely hypertrophicchain of shallow waters (‘boddens’) south of theDarss-Zingst peninsula (Southern Baltic). Interest in the autecologyof the species is, therefore, considerable. Various food sourceswere used in laboratory experiments to ascertain the food requirementsof B.quadridentatus, determine its filtration and ingestionrates, and assess its food particle size-selection ability.Growth experiments showed that the chlorophyceans Nannochlorissp. and Chlorella vulgaris possess considerable nutritionalvalue for the species, whereas abundances declined when Microcystisfirma, detritus from Enteromorpha sp. and only bacteria (Pseudomonas),respectively, were provided as food sources. Filtration ratesvaried between 0.02 and 1.73 µl ind.–1 h–1,and ingestion rates between 121 and 5560 cells ind.–1h–1, depending on the filtration rate and algal concentration.Investigations into food particle size selection using fluorescentlatex particles revealed that particle size influences foodparticle intake. When particles of different sizes were mixed,the animals showed a preference for the larger particles andingested the smaller ones with a diameter of 1–2 µmless efficiently. The brackish water species Brachionus plicatiliswas studied besides B.quadridentatus in all experiments. Theformer species proved to be superior both in its range of utilizableparticle sizes and its growth rate. We investigated the seasonal occurrence, wet : dry : carbon: nitrogen weight ratios, population biomass, gastric pouchcontents, and rates of feeding, growth and respiration of thescyphomedusa Aurelia aurita in the central part of the InlandSea of Japan. Aurelia aurita medusae began to appear in January/Februaryas ephyrae, reached annual maximum body size in July/August,and disappeared, presumably due to death, by November. Initialslow growth in early spring was followed by a period of exponentialgrowth (mean growth rate: 0.069 d–1) between April andJuly. In the Ondo Strait, which is characterized by strong tidalmixing, the A. aurita population (mean carbon biomass: 66.0mg C m–3) overwhelmingly dominated the zooplankton-communitybiomass (mean biomass of micro- and mesozooplankton: 23.7 mgC m–3) between May and early August The gastric contentanalysis revealed that A. aurita ate almost all micro- and mesozooplankters,of which small copepods were most important. On the basis ofdigestion time for small copepods (60 min) and their abundancein the gastric pouch of field-collected A. aurita, we determinedthe weight specific feeding rates and clearance rates. The formerincreases linearly with increasing copepod abundance, but thelatter was relatively constant irrespective of the food supply.We also measured the respiration rates of A. aurita and expressedthem as functions of body weight and temperature. These physio-ecologicalparameters enabled us to construct the carbon budget of theA. aurita population typical of early summer in the Ondo Strait.Predicted population-feeding rate (6.07 mg C m–3 d–1)was higher than the population-food requirement for both metabolismand growth (4.55 mg C m–3 d–1), indicating thatfood supply was sufficient to sustain the observed growth rate.This feeding rate was equivalent to 26% of micro- and mesozooplanktonbiomass, a significant impact on zooplankton.  相似文献

The phenological development of nine Chilean accessions of Medicagopolymorpha, collected along a north–south aridity gradient,and of two commercial cultivars of the same species, were comparedin 12 sequential outdoor sowings at Cauquenes (35°58'S,72°17'W, elev. 177 m), in the sub-humid Mediterranean climatezone of Chile. A glasshouse experiment was also conducted toevaluate the effect of photoperiod on phenophase timing. Therewas a clear gradient in precocity among the Chilean accessionsin both experiments: accessions MPO-9-88 and MPO-7-88, fromthe arid zone, were the earliest-flowering accessions, whereasMPO-36-88 from the humid Mediterranean zone was the latest.Both experiments revealed significant variation among the Chileanaccessions in the response of flowering time to variation inphotoperiod regime. Differences in days to flowering betweenthe least- (8 h) and the most- (16 h) inductive photoperiodswere lower in precocious accessions from arid and semi-aridzones, than in late-flowering accessions from more humid zones.Rate of progress to flowering, defined as the inverse of timefrom emergence to first flower appearance (1/ f), was relatedto mean diurnal temperature, or to both mean diurnal temperatureand mean photoperiod. In two early-flowering accessions fromthe arid zone, and in the Australian cultivar ‘CircleValley’, 1/ f was affected significantly (P < 0.05)by both temperature and photoperiod. In the remaining accessions,no significant responses to temperatures were detected; 1/ fwas influenced significantly by photoperiod only.
