Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that results in substantial morbidity. The disease may be preventable in some instances by reducing risk factors associated with the disease. We undertook a study to determine whether being overweight or obese, a health risk that applies to younger and older age groups, is commonly associated with hip joint OA. The body mass indices (BMIs) of 1021 males and females ranging in age from 23 to 94 years and requiring surgery for end-stage hip joint OA were analyzed to find the prevalence of high body weights at the time of surgery. Being overweight was defined as having a BMI of 25–29.9 kg/m2 and being obese as having a BMI >30 kg/m2. BMIs indicative of overweight were recorded for 68% of the patients surveyed. Of 35 patients aged 30–39 years, 53.3% had BMIs >25, with a mean of 28.8, which nearly reaches the lower limit defined for obesity. On average, patients who had had previous surgery and complications warranting reimplantation of new surgical devices had BMIs in the obese range. Our findings suggest that a high percentage of patients with end-stage hip OA are overweight, including younger adults and those with symptoms of 3–6 months' duration. Moreover, patients whose BMIs are in the obese range may be at increased risk for removal and reimplantation of their prosthesis.  相似文献

Objectives: To identify the prevalence of overweight among community‐dwelling adults diagnosed as having knee osteoarthritis (OA) and the relationship between the weight status of these individuals, selected disease‐related outcomes, and disease progression. Research Methods and Procedures: The BMIs of 82 women and 18 men with unilateral or bilateral knee OA were examined on a single occasion along with data on physical comorbidities, pain, and function and subjected to correlation analyses. BMIs from two additional samples, one that included 16 women with and without knee OA and one that included 24 women and 6 men with knee joint OA that required surgery for the subsequent onset of hip OA, were also assessed. Results: At least 80% of all present cohorts were overweight or obese. Those with higher BMIs reported more pain than those with lower BMIs (p < 0.05) and pain was related to perceived physical exertion (p < 0.05). Body mass indices were not significantly correlated with generic gait measures, but an inverse trend toward the time spent in the gait cycle (r = ?0.63; p = 0.097) that may impact the disease process was identified. Those with comorbidities had the same body mass, on average, as those with no comorbidities, and those with bilateral disease were heavier than those with unilateral disease. Discussion: A high body mass is present in most adults with knee OA. Moreover, being overweight may affect knee joint impact rates and pain incrementally. Having high body weights may heighten the risk for bilateral knee joint, as well as hip joint, OA.  相似文献

Obesity has been identified as a risk factor for the development of hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) and may play a role in exacerbating existing disease. Therefore, we hypothesized that obese patients would present for hip and knee replacement surgery at a younger age than nonobese patients. From our registry, we performed a cross‐sectional study of 841 hip and 804 knee replacement patients. Patients were categorized by BMI ≤25 kg/m2, 25.1–29.9 kg/m2, 30–34.9 kg/m2, and ≥35 kg/m2. Linear regression modeling was used to examine the relationship between BMI and age at surgery. Hip and knee replacement patients' mean age at surgery was 7.1 and 7.9 years younger, respectively, if their BMI was ≥35 kg/m2 when compared to patients with a BMI ≤25 kg/m2 (P = 0.002). BMI was a significant independent (of gender, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score, surgeon, and comorbidity) predictor of age at knee replacement (P < 0.05). WOMAC scores were significantly worse preoperatively in patients with a BMI ≥35 kg/m2 compared to those with a BMI ≤25 kg/m2 (P < 0.05). Our study indicates that obese patients, especially those with a BMI ≥35 kg/m2, presented for and underwent joint replacement surgery at a younger age as compared to nonobese patients.  相似文献

Introduction

The objective was to investigate potential gene-environment interaction between body mass index (BMI) and each of eight TGFβ1 polymorphisms in knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods

We conducted a case-control study of Caucasian men and women aged 45 to 86 years from Nottingham, United Kingdom (Genetics of OA and Lifestyle (GOAL) study). Cases had clinically severe symptoms and radiographic knee or hip OA; controls had no symptoms and no radiographic knee/hip OA. We used logistic regression to investigate the association of TGFβ1 polymorphisms and OA when stratifying by BMI. Knee and hip OA were analyzed separately with adjustment for potential confounders. Additive and multiplicative interactions were examined.

Results

2,048 cases (1,042 knee OA, 1,006 hip OA) and 967 controls were studied. For hip OA, the highest risk was in overweight (BMI ≥25 kg/m2) individuals with the variant allele of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1800468 (odds ratio (OR) 2.21, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.55, 3.15). Evaluation of gene-environment interaction indicated significant synergetic interaction (relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) = 0.93, synergy index (SI) = 4.33) with an attributable proportion due to interaction (AP) of 42% (AP = 0.42; 95% CI 0.16, 0.68). Multiplicative interaction was also significant (OR for interaction (ORINT) = 2.27, P = 0.015). For knee OA, the highest risk was in overweight individuals with homozygous genotype 11 of SNP rs2278422 (OR = 6.95, P <0.001). In contrast, the variant allele indicated slightly lower risks (OR = 4.72, P <0.001), a significant antagonistic interaction (RERI = -2.66, SI = 0.59), AP = -0.56 (95%CI -0.94, -0.17) and a significant multiplicative interaction (ORINT = 0.47, P = 0.013).

Conclusion

TGFβ1 gene polymorphisms interact with being overweight to influence the risk of large joint OA.  相似文献

Objective: Doctors and patients assume that overweight and obesity are negative predictors for good and excellent early outcome after total hip replacement. It was the purpose of this prospective investigation to assess whether overweight or obese patients have worse early postoperative outcome in comparison with normal‐weight patients. Research Methods and Procedures: Sixty‐seven consecutive patients receiving a total hip replacement were enrolled in the study. Patients were grouped into three samples according to BMI: normal‐weight (BMI < 25 kg/m2, n = 11), overweight (BMI 25 to 29.9 kg/m2, n = 36), and obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2, n = 20). At 10 days and at 3 months after surgery, the patient‐centered outcome was analyzed with a self‐administered assessment chart, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) Osteoarthritis Index. Statistical analysis was performed with a multiple regression model that took into consideration further confounding parameters (age, sex, affected side, anchorage of the implant, duration of surgery, hospital length of stay, and prior pain, stiffness, and function). Results: No significant influence of individual BMI on subjective outcome according to the WOMAC questionnaire was observed at either 10 days or 3 months after surgery. Hospital length of stay was comparable, and WOMAC scores did not differ significantly preoperatively, at 10 days, or at 3 months postoperatively among patients with different BMI. Discussion: These data showed that the BMI of the patients in our study sample had no significant impact on early outcome or hospital length of stay after total hip replacement. Our data suggest, therefore, that body weight should not be a justification for withholding surgery from overweight or obese patients.  相似文献

In order to determine whether there is a genetic component to hip or knee joint failure due to idiopathic osteoarthritis (OA), we invited patients (probands) undergoing hip or knee arthroplasty for management of idiopathic OA to provide detailed family histories regarding the prevalence of idiopathic OA requiring joint replacement in their siblings. We also invited their spouses to provide detailed family histories about their siblings to serve as a control group. In the probands, we confirmed the diagnosis of idiopathic OA using American College of Rheumatology criteria. The cohorts included the siblings of 635 probands undergoing total hip replacement, the siblings of 486 probands undergoing total knee replacement, and the siblings of 787 spouses. We compared the prevalence of arthroplasty for idiopathic OA among the siblings of the probands with that among the siblings of the spouses, and we used logistic regression to identify independent risk factors for hip and knee arthroplasty in the siblings. Familial aggregation for hip arthroplasty, but not for knee arthroplasty, was observed after controlling for age and sex, suggesting a genetic contribution to end-stage hip OA but not to end-stage knee OA. Obesity and body fat distribution (FD) are established risk factors for chronic diseases. The body mass index (BMI) and the waist/hip circumference ratio (WHR) are used conventionally as indices of obesity and FD in epidemiological studies. Although some general limitations of these indices are recognized, others that affect their use in relative risks for disease are not well recognized. These include effects of sex, ethnicity, and especially age on the relationships between these indices and body composition, which can result in substantial misclassification of obesity and FD. There is considerable variability in body composition for any BMI, and some individuals with low BMIs have as much fat as those with high BMIs. This results in poor sensitivity for classifying levels of body fatness (e.g., too many “false negatives,” or overweight individuals classified as not overweight), and relative risks are attenuated across all categories of BMI. A more serious problem, however, is that at different ages the same levels of BMI correspond to different amounts of fat and fat-free mass. Data from the Rosetta Study and the New Mexico Aging Process Study show that older adults have, on average, more fat than younger adults at any BMI, due to the loss of muscle mass with age. As a result, the sensitivity of BMI cutpoints with respect to body fatness decreases with age, and the use of a fixed cutpoint for all ages results in “differential mis-classification bias.” Taken together, these issues sug- gest that the increases with age in the prevalences of overweight and obesity, and in the risks for chronic diseases, may be mis-estimated using BMI. Similar issues may affect the use of WHR for estimating prevalences and associated risks of FD. New field methods for estimating body composition are available that can be applied in large, epidemiologic follow-up studies of chronic diseases. These methods will allow epidemiologists to consider, for example, whether it is increased fat, or the replacement of fat-free mass with fat, with age that is associated with risk for chronic disease.  相似文献

Background

There are few data on the prevalence of obesity and its influence on achieving blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipid (3B) goals in Chinese type 2 diabetes outpatients.

Methods

Patient demographic data, anthropometric measurements, medications, and blood glucose and lipid profiles of 24,512 type 2 diabetes patients from a large, geographically diverse study (CCMR-3B) were analyzed. Using cut-points for body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) recommended by the Working Group on Obesity in China, overweight and obesity were defined as BMIs of 24–27.9kg/m2 and ≥28.0kg/m2. Central obesity was defined as a waist circumference ≥80cm in women and ≥85cm in men. The 3B therapeutic goals were HbA1c<7.0%, BP<140/90mmHg and LDL-C<2.6mmol/L.

Results

Overall, 43.0% of type 2 diabetes patients were overweight and 16.7% were obese; 13.3% of overweight and and10.1% of obese patients achieved all the 3B target goals. Overweight or obese patients were less likely to achieve 3B goals than those with normal BMIs. More than a half the overweight or obese patients (69.6%) were centrally obese. Patients with abdominal obesity were less likely to achieve cardiometabolic targets than those without abdominal obesity. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, female, higher BMI and waist circumference, smoking, drinking, sedentary lifestyle, and longer diabetes duration were significantly correlated with failure to achieve 3B control goals.

Conclusions

Obesity is highly prevalent and associated with poor 3B control in Chinese type 2 diabetes patients. In clinical practice, more attention and resources should focus on weight loss for such patients.  相似文献

In some chronic disease studies, distinctions have been made regarding the importance of body mass index (BMI) as a risk factor in younger versus older men and women. In order to determine the significance of these differences in BMI-disease associations, we determined the extent of age-dependent variations in the relation of BMIs to body composition in large probability samples of U.S. men and women from the First and Second U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES I and II). BMIs are more highly correlated with estimates of body fat in younger than in older men and women, and with muscle mass in older than in younger adults. Caution should be exercised in interpreting the significance of BMI as a risk factor for chronic disease, particularly in comparison of age groups.  相似文献

Obesity is a major risk factor for developing coronary artery disease. The impact of obesity on prognosis among those with established coronary disease is less clear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of obesity on repeat revascularization in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES). We examined 6,083 patients who were divided into three groups according to BMI: normal (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m(2), n = 1,592); overweight (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m(2), n = 3,026) and obese (BMI >30 kg/m(2), n = 1,465). The follow-up focused on clinical-driven repeat revascularization, including target lesion revascularization (TLR) and nonTLR. Median follow-up was 26 months (interquartile range 20-32). There was no significant difference in the incidence of TLR among normal, overweight, and obese patients (6.3% vs. 6.1% vs. 7.1%; P = 0.423). In contrast, the incidence of nonTLR was significantly higher in obese patients compared with normal and overweight (8.4% vs. 6.0% vs. 5.8%, P = 0.003). Multivariate analysis showed that obesity was an independent predictor of nonTLR during follow-up (hazard ratio = 1.39; 95% confidence interval = 1.06-1.83; P = 0.019), along with diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. Concomitant use of statins was independently associated with decreased risk of nonTLR (hazard ratio = 0.75; 95% confidence interval = 0.62-0.92; P = 0.005). In conclusion, among patients undergoing PCI with DES, obesity was not associated with TLR, but was associated with a higher risk of nonTLR.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to 1). examine skeletal muscle fatty acid oxidation in individuals with varying degrees of adiposity and 2). determine the relationship between skeletal muscle fatty acid oxidation and the accumulation of long-chain fatty acyl-CoAs. Muscle was obtained from normal-weight [n = 8; body mass index (BMI) 23.8 +/- 0.58 kg/m(2)], overweight/obese (n = 8; BMI 30.2 +/- 0.81 kg/m(2)), and extremely obese (n = 8; BMI 53.8 +/- 3.5 kg/m(2)) females undergoing abdominal surgery. Skeletal muscle fatty acid oxidation was assessed in intact muscle strips. Long-chain fatty acyl-CoA concentrations were measured in a separate portion of the same muscle tissue in which fatty acid oxidation was determined. Palmitate oxidation was 58 and 83% lower in skeletal muscle from extremely obese (44.9 +/- 5.2 nmol x g(-1) x h(-1)) patients compared with normal-weight (71.0 +/- 5.0 nmol x g(-1) x h(-1)) and overweight/obese (82.2 +/- 8.7 nmol x g(-1) x h(-1)) patients, respectively. Palmitate oxidation was negatively (R = -0.44, P = 0.003) associated with BMI. Long-chain fatty acyl-CoA content was higher in both the overweight/obese and extremely obese patients compared with normal-weight patients, despite significantly lower fatty acid oxidation only in the extremely obese. No associations were observed between long-chain fatty acyl-CoA content and palmitate oxidation. These data suggest that there is a defect in skeletal muscle fatty acid oxidation with extreme obesity but not overweight/obesity and that the accumulation of intramyocellular long-chain fatty acyl-CoAs is not solely a result of reduced fatty acid oxidation.  相似文献

We have examined the relationships between percentage of body fat (PBF) and risk factors for cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance and how good body mass index (BMI) and other anthropometric measures are as indices of obesity. High PBF levels were associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance. The World Health Organization BMI of 30 kg/m(2) for obesity has low sensitivity, 6.7% and 13.4% for men and women, respectively. For every obese man and woman identified, 6.7 and 1.76 times nonobese men and women, respectively, will be misclassified as obese. With the locally established BMI cutoff point for obesity of 27 kg/m(2) for men and 25 kg/m(2) for women, the sensitivity was improved to 46.7% and 60.8%, respectively. For every obese man and woman identified, 3.76 and 1.64 times nonobese men and women, respectively, will be misclassified as obese. None of the other anthropometric indices was better than the locally established BMIs. We showed that the BMIs for obesity for our local men and women are different. These BMIs were most precise among all indices studied. However, they still lead to high false-positive rates. For more effective management of the problem of obesity, we need to develop more precise, simple, and cost-effective methods for the measurement of PBF.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of weight loss maintenance in a population-based sample of the German adult population. German adults were recruited based on the random digital-dialing methodology. Using computer-assisted telephone interviewing, weight loss maintenance was assessed, defined as having intentionally lost at least 10% from maximum weight and having maintained it for at least 1 year at the time of the survey. A total of 2,095 noninstitutionalized adults were randomly selected from all parts of Germany and the data of 957 respondents were included into the analysis. Of those who were at least overweight (BMI >or= 25 kg/m(2)) at their maximum weight, 17.7% reported having maintained a current weight loss of >or=10% of their maximum weight for at least 1 year. Among participants who reported a maximum weight in the obese range (BMI >or= 30 kg/m(2)), 29.7% reported successful 1-year weight loss maintenance. Among at least overweight participants, being younger and female, and having a higher maximum BMI were significant predictors of successful 1-year weight loss maintenance. The results suggest that successful weight loss maintenance is not uncommon in the general population, particularly in formerly obese participants. More should be learned about the strategies that successful weight maintainers use to avoid regaining weight.  相似文献

Results of the analysis showed that parents and children overweight/obesity were significantly correlated. The sample includes 318 pairs of mothers and children, and 336 pairs of fathers and children at the age 11.3 +/- 0.4 years in Trogir, Croatia. Child overweight and obesity were defined according to body mass index (BMI) 25 and 30 equivalents (kg/m2). The prevalence of total overweight in girls was 25.6% and among boys was 20.5%. Mother's weight (p = 0.003) and BMI (p = 0.006) were greater in obese than in other groups of children. Overweight/obese children were more often found among overweight/obese mothers (p = 0.009) and fathers (p = 0.039). Correlation between overweight/obese children and their father (odds ratio 3.2, 95% CI 1.5-6.8) was stronger than between overweight/obese children and their mothers (odds ratio 2.2, 95% CI 1.2-3.9). Associations with mothers' and daughters' overweight/obesity were stronger (p = 0.017) than mothers' and sons'(p = 0.12). Correlations between children's BMI and fathers' BMI (r = 0.265, p < 0.0001) and between children's BMI and mothers' BMI (r = 0.173, p = 0.002) were significant. Children whose parents are overweight/obese look for greater attention in future preventive programme.  相似文献

Obesity is associated with higher cervical cancer mortality, but its relationship with sexual behavioral risk factors that predispose women to human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer is unclear. We used data from 3,329 women participants, aged 20-59 years, of the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, to analyze the relationship between BMI and age at first intercourse, number of sexual partners, condom use during sexual activity, history of sexually transmitted disease (STD), herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) seropositivity, and HPV prevalence. BMI was not associated with the prevalence of HPV. Mildly obese women (BMI 30.0-34.9 kg/m(2)) were least likely to report a STD history (9% vs. 13% in normal weight) and >or=2 sexual partners in the previous year (8% vs. 13%) while overweight women (BMI 25.0-29.9 kg/m(2)) were least likely to report >or=10 lifetime partners; among those with multiple partners, BMI was not associated with sexual activity without condoms in the past month. After adjustment for age, race/ethnicity, and education, women with higher BMI were less likely to report sexual behavioral risk factors than normal-weight women; however, odds ratios were only significant for mildly obese women for reporting a STD history (0.74, 95% confidence interval 0.55-0.99) and having >or=2 sexual partners in the last year (0.57, 0.39-0.85). Higher BMI was not associated with HSV-2 seropositivity after adjustment. HPV and sexual behavioral risk factors for HPV and cervical cancer are not more prevalent in obese than normal-weight women and unlikely to account for higher-observed cervical cancer mortality in obese women.  相似文献

Studies have documented substantial increases in obesity throughout most of the industrialized world in recent decades. The majority of explanations for these increases have centred around environmental factors such as the increasing availability of high-fat, high-carbohydrate foods and sedentary lifestyles. This study sought to determine if genetic factors might be contributing to the increases in the proportions of North Americans who are obese and overweight. The body mass index (BMI) for a large sample of two generations of United States and Canadian subjects was correlated with family fertility indicators. Small but highly significant positive correlations were found between the BMIs of family members and their reproduction rates, especially in the case of women. For instance, mothers in the sample (most of whom were born in the 1940s and 50s) who were in the normal or below normal range had an average of 4.3 siblings and 3.2 children, compared with 4.8 siblings and 3.5 children for mothers who were overweight or obese. When combined with evidence from twin and adoption studies indicating that genes make substantial contributions to obesity, this study suggests that recent increases in obesity are partially the result of overweight and obese women having more children than is true for average and underweight women. It is speculated that improvements in medical treatments for conditions associated with obesity--particularly diabetes and heart disease--are making it possible for overweight women to live longer and to be more fertile than was true historically.  相似文献

Background

Overweight and obesity in adulthood are established risk factors for adverse cardiovascular outcomes, but the contribution of overweight in childhood to later cardiovascular risk is less clear. Evidence for a direct effect of childhood overweight would highlight early life as an important target for cardiovascular disease prevention. The aim of this study was to assess whether overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence contribute to excess cardiovascular risk in adults.

Methods and findings

Data from three British birth cohorts, born in 1946, 1958 and 1970, were pooled for analysis (n = 11,447). Individuals were categorised, based on body mass index (BMI), as being of normal weight or overweight/obese in childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Eight patterns of overweight were defined according to weight status at these three stages. Logistic regression models were fitted to assess the associations of patterns of overweight with self-reported type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and coronary heart disease (CHD) in adulthood (34–53 years). Compared to cohort members who were never overweight, those who were obese in adulthood had increased risk of all outcomes. For type 2 diabetes, the odds ratio was higher for obese adults who were also overweight or obese in childhood and adolescence (OR 12.6; 95% CI 6.6 to 24.0) than for those who were obese in adulthood only (OR 5.5; 95% CI 3.4 to 8.8). There was no such effect of child or adolescent overweight on hypertension. For CHD, there was weak evidence of increased risk among those with overweight in childhood. The main limitations of this study concern the use of self-reported outcomes and the generalisability of findings to contemporary child populations.

Conclusions

Type 2 diabetes and to a lesser extent CHD risk may be affected by overweight at all stages of life, while hypertension risk is associated more strongly with weight status in adulthood.  相似文献

Previous studies demonstrated elevated plasma leptin and angiotensinogen (PRA) levels in essential hypertension. However, a few studies investigated the relationship between leptin and angiotensinogen levels in both lean and overweight/ obese hypertensives. The aim of the present study was therefore to examine the relationship between blood pressure, leptin and plasma renin activity in normotensives and in both lean and overweight/obese patients with essential hypertension. Two groups of subjects who were carefully matched for age, gender, waist:hip ratio and body mass index (BMI) were studied: 28 normotensives (NT) (age: 40.1+/-9.1 years old, BMI: 28.1+/-3.6 kg/m2, male/female: 18/10) and 33 newly diagnosed mild to moderate essential hypertensives (EHT) (age: 38.9+/-10 years old, BMI: 27.9+/-4.8 kg/m2, male/female: 22/11). No significant differences in age, gender, waist:hip ratio, fasting blood glucose and BMI were detected between EHT and NT groups. However, systolic and diastolic pressures, mean arterial blood pressures, plasma leptin levels and PRA were significantly higher in EHT group than in NT group (P = 0.001). Plasma leptin levels were strongly correlated with BMI in EHT (r=0.67, P = 0.001) and NT groups (r=0.44, P = 0.001). Plasma leptin levels were correlated with plasma PRA levels in both EHT and NT groups (r = 0.66 and r = 0.44; both P < 0.05, respectively). There was no correlation between leptin or PRA and systolic, diastolic pressures, or mean arterial blood pressures. Furthermore, the patients were divided as lean (n=16) and overweight/obese (n = 17) and compared with BMI-matched controls. In both subgroups, plasma leptin and PRA levels were also higher than those of controls. Our results showed that elevated plasma leptin and PRA are associated with hypertension in both lean and overweight/obese hypertensives. Moreover, plasma leptin was significantly correlated with plasma angiotensinogen levels. These findings suggest that adipose mass is an important determinant of blood pressure, although the mechanism is not clear.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate midparental BMI among intergenerational factors associated with obesity in adult offspring. The data was from an unusual two-generational observational design of 1,477 married couples from Renfrew and Paisley in Scotland who were aged 45-64 years when screened in 1972-1976, and 1,040 sons and 1,298 daughters aged 30-59 years when screened in 1996. BMI was categorized as normal (< 25 kg/m(2)), overweight (25-29.9 kg/m(2)), and obese (> or = 30 kg/m(2)) in offspring and parents. Midparental BMI was defined as the mean of the mother's and father's BMI. Low physical activity, nonsmoking status, higher cholesterol level, and manual social class were all associated with increased BMI in offspring. The effect of reported dietary intake was less clear. Offspring of obese parents (defined by midparental BMI) were over four times more likely to be obese than offspring of normal weight parents. Midparental BMI had a strong effect on offspring BMI, independent of social class, smoking habit, physical activity, and reported dietary intake. Adding midparental BMI to the regression model more than doubled the explained variation of offspring BMI from 7.7 to 17%. Every 1 kg/m(2) increment in midparental BMI was associated with a BMI greater by 0.51 kg/m(2) in offspring. We conclude that midparental BMI is a useful simple tool to predict offspring BMI. Whether it represents genetic or environmental family effects, it is easily ascertained by the individual and could be used in health promotion and clinical settings to target individuals who are at increased risk of becoming obese.  相似文献
