An investigation of the feeding ecology of Mugilidae in Natal and Pondoland estuaries showed that although the diet of the eleven species is similar it varies from one estuary to another and is determined largely by the occurrence of particular food items on substrates of the preferred particle size of each species. The findings of this study support the conclusions reached by Blaber (1976) with regard to the partitioning of the food resource according to inorganic particle size. Particle sizes consumed by each species do not remain the same but vary according to locality. Within any one estuary the mullet species avoid interspecific competition by selecting particles of different sizes. The fish are always graded in the same order with regard to particle size. The relative abundance of the various species of mullet in Natal and Pondoland estuaries is probably not controlled by food or substrate requirements because most species are sufficiently flexible in their feeding ecology to cope with a wide variety of estuarine substrates.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common pollutants associated with urbanization and suburbanization in estuarine systems, but little is known about their effects on the physiological properties of microalgae. We examined the effects of ultraviolet (UV)-activated fluoranthene toxicity on (a) the growth, chlorophyll a content cell−1, and pigment composition of axenic Ankistrodesmus sp. (an estuarine benthic green microalga) and (b) the phytoplankton population growth and pigment composition of natural communities from an urbanized (Murrells Inlet) vs. forested (North Inlet) salt marsh estuary. The zeaxanthin/violaxanthin ratio increased in Ankistrodesmus sp. cultures exposed to UV light in the presence of fluoranthene, supporting the hypothesis that xanthophyll cycling is an energy dissipative response to photoinduced PAH toxicity in this species. Exposure of natural communities to the combination of UV light and fluoranthene resulted in decreased chlorophyll production and increased zeaxanthin violaxanthin−1 in samples from the urbanized estuary (Murrells Inlet), but not North Inlet, suggesting that phytoplankton in the former “fluoranthene-impacted” estuary were more susceptible to fluoranthene toxicity. Consideration of xanthophyll cycling as a microalgal response to UV-activated PAH toxicity has implications to understanding the influence of these contaminants on microbial food web structure and ecosystem production.  相似文献

To investigate whether wild fish populations are food limited, this study explored whether the provision of supplementary food had a positive effect on the abundance, condition and growth characteristics of estuarine fish assemblages in New Zealand. Feed (7690 kg) was delivered from an anthropogenic feeding station over a 60-week period to a naturally occurring assemblage of wild fish. Yellow-eyed mullet (Aldrichetta forsteri) of juvenile, sub-adult and newly matured size classes were the dominant species actively foraging at the feeding station throughout its operation, whereas larger piscivorous species visited and foraged from the feed station over the summer period only. Other species were present in the wider area of Nelson Haven, but not at the feed station. No obvious changes in the condition factor of yellow-eyed mullet were observed across the period of monitoring, and no changes in their catchability were detected – although marked seasonal variation in catch rates was observed. Results from tag-recapture data identify that the length-based growth rates of yellow-eyed mullet recaptured near the feed station were higher than those of tagged individuals recaptured at a nearby comparison site, and were higher than the growth rates observed in natural populations of yellow-eyed mullet in the wider region. Shifts in the median size of fish, as observed by acoustic observations, agreed with the tag-recapture data. Although some of the results identified were not amenable to statistical analyses, the attendance of yellow-eyed mullet at the feeding station, in combination with the improved estimates of growth by most of the techniques employed, indicates that yellow-eyed mullet are food limited in their natural environment and that the growth performance of these fish can be positively affected by the increased availability of food.  相似文献

We studied the invasion of the exotic nematode parasite Anguillicola crassus in the American eel Anguilla rostrata using tributaries of the Hudson River estuary. Yellow-phase American eels were sampled from 6 tributaries, and their swim bladders were examined for nematode infection. Prevalence averaged 39% with an intensity of 2.4 nematodes per eel. Parasite distribution was not significant along a latitudinal gradient; on the other hand, physical barriers (dams and natural waterfalls) significantly reduced infections upstream. Urbanization may increase the susceptibility of eels to infection; we found significantly elevated infection rates when urbanized lands exceeded 15% of the tributary catchment area. Yellow-phase eel condition was not affected by parasite infection. The invasion of the entire Hudson River watershed is ongoing and therefore will continue to be a management concern. Further analysis of the parasite-host interaction in North America is warranted.  相似文献

The stomach contents of samples of the mugilid Liza ramada (Risso, 1826), captured at Alcochete (brackish water zone of the Tagus Estuary) differed from those from Vala Nova (freshwater zone of the same estuary).
In the freshwater zone of the estuary the mullet ingested preferentially planktonic micro-algae, while in the brackish water they ate benthic micro-algae.
The stomach contents from Vala Nova showed a higher diversity of food items, compared with those from Alcochete. At Alcochete the Naviculales (numerical frequency, 82%) was the most representative order, while at Vala Nova it was the Coscinodiscales (61%) and the Chlorococcales (16%).
In fresh water, the stomach contents contained about 25–4% organic matter, while at Alcochete only 8.7% was found.
In the brackish water zone the ingestion rhythm was related to the tidal cycle, attaining a maximum during the high tide and a minimum at low tide.
At Vala Nova the mullet ate regularly throughout the day. showing a slight increase at dawn and dusk. Apparently, the fish remained inactive by night, at both locations.  相似文献

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and regression modeling techniques were used to evaluate relationships between land use and fecal pollution in Murrells Inlet, a small, urbanized, high-salinity estuary located between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, SC. GIS techniques were used to identify and calculate land use and spatial variables to be used in a regression model. The regression analysis was performed to identify specific land-use characteristics that may influence fecal coliform densities in the estuary. The regression modeling used land-use parameters to explain the variability of fecal coliform densities measured monthly at 21 locations in the estuary over the 10-year period from 1989 to 1998. Individual regression models were generated for each season, and for a combined data set. The results of the regression analyses indicate that proximity to areas with septic tanks, and rainfall runoff from urbanized areas are important predictors of fecal coliform densities in the estuary. Sampling sites closer to areas with high densities of active septic tanks or more urbanized land uses tended to have higher fecal coliform densities. Although these results may suggest that septic tanks are a substantial human source of fecal pollution, previous research has indicated that the fecal pollution in those areas is probably not from human sources. The areas of Murrells Inlet with higher septic tank densities also are located in areas of high housing density, are in close proximity to the land-water interface, and are in the extreme upper reaches of the estuary, where flushing and dilution effects may be reduced. The higher fecal coliform densities observed at these locations may be a coincidental result of these factors and fecal deposition from pets, and not the direct result of fecal pollution input from the septic tanks.The results also show seasonal differences in the dynamics of fecal coliform bacterial pollution in the estuary. The winter model included a rainfall interaction term, which indicates that ground saturation effects may be an important part of fecal deposition in winter months. The water quality management implications of this research include identification of strategies to reduce or intercept urban stormwater runoff, reduction of waste dumping from boats, and reduction of pet waste.  相似文献

The distribution, population structure, condition and gonad indices, and the attachment strengths of the invasive Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis are described from the Knysna Estuary, South Africa. Mussels were found in the rocky intertidal at the mouth of the estuary and on all man-made hard substrata as far as 12?km from the mouth in 2013. However, mussel beds were found only in the lower reach of the estuary, where mussel densities were as high as 120 per 0.01?m2. When compared to mussels from the embayment regions of the estuary, those at the estuary mouth, where wave action was high, were generally smaller, had significantly lower condition and gonad indices, and greater attachment strength. This suggests that mussels within the sheltered regions of the estuary invest more energy in growth and reproduction, and that this is one reason for their success as an invasive species in the Knysna estuarine embayment.  相似文献

Like other highly urbanized and industrialized estuaries, the Seine estuary (France) has, for decades, received high inputs of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In order to estimate the bioremediation potentials and to identify the bacterial species involved in hydrocarbon degradation, we used microcosms containing seawater from the Seine estuary supplemented with either naphthalene, phenanthrene, fluorene or pyrene. In the microcosms enriched with naphthalene or phenanthrene, hydrocarbon biodegradation was significant within 9 weeks (43% or 46%, respectively), as shown by analyses in GC-MS. In similar microcosms incubated also with naphthalene or phenanthrene, analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences (DNA and cDNA) with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and clone libraries indicated that the PAH-degrading communities were dominated by Cycloclasticus spp., confirming their universal key role in degradation of low-molecular-weight PAHs in marine environments. However, in contrast to previous studies, we found that Pseudomonas spp. also degraded naphthalene and phenanthrene in seawater; this occurred only after 21 days, as was confirmed by real-time PCR. Although this genus has been abundantly described in the literature as a good PAH-degrading bacterial group in soil or in sediment, to our knowledge, this is the first evidence of a significant fitness in PAH degradation in seawater.  相似文献

Understanding challenges posed by climate change to estuaries and their faunas remains a high priority for managing these systems and their communities. Freshwater discharge into a range of estuary types in south‐western Australia between 1990 and 2015 is shown to be related to rainfall. This largely accounts for decreases in discharge in this microtidal region being more pronounced on the west coast than south coast, where rainfall decline was less. Results of an oxygen‐balance model imply that, as demonstrated by empirical data for the Swan River Estuary, declines in discharge into a range of estuary types would be accompanied by increases in the extent of hypoxia. In 2013–15, growth and body condition of the teleost Acanthopagrus butcheri varied markedly among three permanently open, one intermittently‐open, one seasonally‐closed and one normally‐closed estuary, with average time taken by females to reach the minimum legal length (MLL) of 250 mm ranging from 3.6 to 17.7 years. It is proposed that, in a given restricted period, these inter‐estuary variations in biological characteristics are related more to differences in factors, such as food resources and density, than to temperature and salinity. The biological characteristics of A. butcheri in the four estuaries, for which there are historical data, changed markedly between 1993–96 and 2013–15. Growth of both sexes, and also body condition in all but the normally‐closed estuary, declined, with females taking between 1.7 and 2.9 times longer to attain the MLL. Irrespective of period, body condition, and growth are positively related. Age at maturity typically increased between periods, but length at maturity declined only in the estuary in which growth was greatest. The plasticity of the biological characteristics of A. butcheri, allied with confinement to its natal estuary and ability to tolerate a wide range of environmental conditions, makes this sparid and comparable species excellent subjects for assessing estuarine “health.”  相似文献

Feeding periodicity, selection efficiency and food consumption of Liza dumerili (Steindachner, 1869) and L. richardsoni (Smith, 1846) were determined. The effects of particle size and nature of ingested food on aspects of the morphology of the alimentary canal of L. dumerili, L. richardsoni, Mugil cephalu (Linnaeus, 1958) and Liza tricuspidens (Smith, 1935) are discused. It was found that the dominant mullet species in the Swartkops estuary (South Africa) not only exhibit different feeding periodicities (L. dumerili and L. richardsoni but that selected material in all the species differs in chemical as well as physical properties. Alimentary canals of each species are morphologically well adapted for selection, ingestion and digestion of its preferredi food items. These factors reduce interspecific competition among the different mullet species.  相似文献

Four estuarine pond-ecosystems equipped with tidal simulation were established and stocked with mullet, shrimp, and oysters. A 6 month pre-spill sampling period established a consistently low incidence of disease in the mullet, Mugil cephalus , from all ponds. Following the preliminary study period, Empire Mix crude oil (4.0-5.0 p.p.m.) was spilled on each of two of the ponds in mid-July, 1974. Six to eight days following the oil spill all the mullet examined from the treated ponds had varying degrees of fin rot on one or more of their fins. The fin erosion involved primarily the caudal, pectoral, and pelvic fins with the caudal fin the most severely damaged. The degree of damage to the fins varied from a slight discoloration with no visible fraying to complete erosion of all of the fin elements. A gram negative rod tentatively identified as Vibrio sp. is considered the primary pathogen responsible for the fin erosion. Although the condition of the infected fish indicated the possibility of a systemic infection, only a low percentage of the kidney cultures taken from the diseased fish were positive indicating the infection was mostly external. The course of the infection was documented over a 56-day period following the oil spill. Significantly, 96% of the mullet observed from the treated ponds had some degree of fin damage while only 6 % of those observed from the control ponds had eroded fins. The high incidence of fin rot which occurred in the estuarine-pond ecosystems did not occur during numerous acute exposures of mullet to crude oil in the laboratory.  相似文献

Historical coral skeleton (CS) δ18O and δ15N records were produced from samples recovered from sedimentary deposits, held in natural history museum collections, and cored into modern coral heads. These records were used to assess the influence of global warming and regional eutrophication, respectively, on the decline of coastal coral communities following the development of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) megacity, China. We find that, until 2007, ocean warming was not a major threat to coral communities in the Pearl River estuary; instead, nitrogen (N) inputs dominated impacts. The high but stable CS‐δ15N values (9‰–12‰ vs. air) observed from the mid‐Holocene until 1980 indicate that soil and stream denitrification reduced and modulated the hydrologic inputs of N, blunting the rise in coastal N sources during the early phase of the Pearl River estuary urbanization. However, an unprecedented CS‐δ15N peak was observed from 1987 to 1993 (>13‰ vs. air), concomitant to an increase of NH4+ concentration, consistent with the rapid Pearl River estuary urbanization as the main cause for this eutrophication event. We suggest that widespread discharge of domestic sewage entered directly into the estuary, preventing removal by natural denitrification hotspots. We argue that this event caused the dramatic decline of the Pearl River estuary coral communities reported from 1980 to 2000. Subsequently, the coral record shows that the implementation of improved wastewater management policies succeeded in bringing down both CS‐δ15N and NH4+ concentrations in the early 2000s. This study points to the potential importance of eutrophication over ocean warming in coral decline along urbanized coastlines and in particular in the vicinity of megacities.  相似文献

The robust growth of coastal communities in the southeastern United States is putting unique pressures on estuarine resources. Urbanization of estuarine systems may alter ecosystem function and thus affect the spatial scale and magnitude of nutrient concentrations and primary production temporally and spatially. We examined the spatial and temporal patterns of nutrient and chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations in two shallow well-mixed estuaries, (1) a developed estuary, Murrells Inlet (MI), South Carolina, and (2) a relatively pristine estuary, North Inlet (NI), South Carolina. The summer chlorophyll a maximum in MI was characteristically higher than in NI, which may be indicative of eutrophication. Correlations between salinity and inorganic nutrients (N and P) suggest that nutrient import from upland sources may be more pronounced in MI during stochastic precipitation events. Although inorganic nutrient concentrations between the estuaries were similar overall, during a wet period, inorganic N concentration in MI was increased to a greater extent than in NI, while only minimal increases in inorganic P were observed in both estuaries. Chlorophyll a concentrations decreased from the dry to wet period. Geographic Information System (GIS) plots of intensive spatial sampling in MI indicated spatial gradients of nutrient concentrations within this estuary that appeared to be consistent over time. These observations were investigated in more detail using regression analyses to examine the influences of coastal dilution and nutrient sources on relationships between water quality constituents. Results indicate the importance of stochastic rain events in affecting the linkages of estuarine processes to upland runoff in the urbanized estuary, MI.  相似文献

Juvenile thick-lipped grey mullet, Chelon labrosus , believed to be about 6–7 months old, possessed well developed lymphoid organs including a clearly differentiated thymus with distinct cortical and medullary zones. However, unlike older fish, the juvenile mullet usually failed to produce antibody in response to a single injection of classical thymus-dependent antigen (using the soluble proteins human gamma globulin or keyhole limpet haemocyanin). Prior priming of the juvenile fish with antigen was found to potentiate antibody production following challenge with a second dose of the antigen in adjuvant, priming by oral administration being equally as effective as priming by injection. Neither juvenile nor adult mullet produced any significant level of antibody against ovalbumin.
The results suggest that, despite their apparently well differentiated lymphoid organs, juvenile mullet still show a certain level of immaturity in their antibody responses to soluble proteins; also that immunization can improve their ability to respond.  相似文献

Potential trophic competition between two sympatric mullet species, Mugil cephalus and Mugil curema, was explored in the hypersaline estuary of the Saloum Delta (Senegal) using δ13C and δ15N composition of muscle tissues. Between species, δ15N compositions were similar, suggesting a similar trophic level, while the difference in δ13C compositions indicated that these species did not feed from exactly the same basal production sources or at least not in the same proportions. This result provides the first evidence of isotopic niche segregation between two limno‐benthophageous species belonging to the geographically widespread, and often locally abundant, Mugilidae family.  相似文献

Urbanization is a major challenge for biodiversity conservation, yet the evolutionary processes taking place in urbanized areas remain poorly known. Human activities in cities set new selective forces in motion which need to be investigated to predict the evolutionary responses of animal species living in urban areas. In this study, we investigated the role of urbanization and parasites in the maintenance of melanin-based color polymorphism in the feral pigeon Columba livia. Using a correlative approach, we tested whether differently colored genotypes displayed alternative phenotypic responses to urbanization, by comparing body condition, blood parasite prevalence and parasite load between colored morphs along an urbanization gradient. Body condition did not vary with urbanization, but paler individuals had a higher body condition than darker individuals. Moreover, paler morphs were less often parasitized than darker morphs in moderately urbanized habitats, but their parasite prevalence increased with urbanization. In contrast, darker morphs had similar parasite prevalence along the urbanization gradient. This suggests that paler morphs did better than darker morphs in moderately urbanized environments but were negatively affected by increasing urbanization, while darker morphs performed equally in all environments. Thus, differently colored individuals were distributed non-randomly across the urban habitat and suffered different parasite risk according to their location (a gene-by-environment interaction). This suggests that melanin-based coloration might reflect alternative strategies to cope with urbanization via different exposure or susceptibility to parasites. Spatial variability of parasite pressures linked with urbanization may, thus, play a central role in the maintenance of plumage color polymorphism in this urban species.  相似文献

Commercial salt evaporation ponds comprise a large proportion of baylands adjacent to the San Francisco Bay, a highly urbanized estuary. In the past two centuries, more than 79% of the historic tidal wetlands in this estuary have been lost. Resource management agencies have acquired more than 10 000 ha of commercial salt ponds with plans to undertake one of the largest wetland restoration projects in North America. However, these plans have created debate about the ecological importance of salt ponds for migratory bird communities in western North America. Salt ponds are unique mesohaline (5–18 g l−1) to hyperhaline (> 40 g l−1) wetlands, but little is known of their ecological structure or value. Thus, we studied decommissioned salt ponds in the North Bay of the San Francisco Bay estuary from January 1999 through November 2001. We measured water quality parameters (salinity, DO, pH, temperature), nutrient concentrations, primary productivity, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, fish, and birds across a range of salinities from 24 to 264 g l−1. Our studies documented how unique limnological characteristics of salt ponds were related to nutrient levels, primary productivity rates, invertebrate biomass and taxa richness, prey fish, and avian predator numbers. Salt ponds were shown to have unique trophic and physical attributes that supported large numbers of migratory birds. Therefore, managers should carefully weigh the benefits of increasing habitat for native tidal marsh species with the costs of losing these unique hypersaline systems.  相似文献

This study examined inter‐period changes over two to three decades in the fish fauna of an urbanized estuary experiencing rapid population growth and a drying climate (Swan–Canning Estuary, Western Australia). Responses were compared at the fish community level (species composition; 1978–2009 in the shallows and 1993–2009 in deeper waters) and at the population and individual levels of an estuarine indicator species, black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri (biomass–abundance and per capita mass at age, respectively; 1993–2009). All three levels showed distinct shifts from earlier to later periods, but their patterns, sensitivity and breadth differed. Community composition changed markedly in the shallows of the lower‐middle estuary between the late 1970s and all later periods and moderately between more disparate periods from 1995 to 2009. Several species trends could be linked to the increasing salinity of the estuary or declining dissolved oxygen levels in its middle–upper reaches. Community changes were, however, small or insignificant in the shallow and deeper waters of the upper estuary and deeper waters of the middle estuary, where environmental perturbations are often most pronounced. This may reflect the resilience of the limited suite of species that typify those reaches and thus their lack of sensitivity in reflecting longer‐term change at the coarser level of mean abundance. One such species, the selected indicator, A. butcheri, did, however, show marked temporal changes at both the population and individual levels. Biomass decreased markedly in deeper waters while increasing in the shallows from earlier to later periods, presumably reflecting an onshore movement of fish, and per capita body mass in the 2+, 3+ and 4+ year classes fell steadily over time. Such changes probably indicate deteriorating habitat quality in the deeper waters. The study outcomes provide support for a multifaceted approach to the biomonitoring of estuaries using fishes and highlight the need for complementary monitoring of relevant stressors to better disentangle cause–effect pathways.  相似文献

Generalised additive models (GAMs) were used to test the hypotheses that red mullet (Mullus barbatus) and hake (Merluccius merluccius) abundances are related to the bathymetry, spatial location and the temperature-based variability of the NE Mediterranean. Data were collected during a 2-year period (1996–1997) of quasi-synoptic sampling using demersal trawl surveys in the northern Aegean Sea. The results of this study supported these hypotheses. It was found that geographic position and sea bottom characteristics influence the temporal distribution patterns of red mullet and hake. Data are presented that reveal species-specific aggregation patterns and an important habitat utilisation of the area. The modelled species’ abundances showed a strongly non-linear dependence on the explanatory covariates. This study, although not directly dealing with spawning, also provided evidence that red mullet and hake demonstrate environmental and bathymetric preferences in the months posterior to spawning. Mean red mullet abundance was consistently highest in areas with warmer bottom waters in the east and west than in the centre, these areas having shallower depths (35–60 m) and bottom temperatures around 19°C. The red mullet appeared to avoid the cold bottom waters (<16°C) of the deeper regions. Results indicated that areas with the highest hake abundances were located in waters of ∼160 m having bottom temperature of ∼16°C and avoided the shallower waters (<70 m) regardless of their bottom temperature. The present findings also suggested that colder bottom waters at all depths were associated with lower-than-average hake abundance. Red mullet and hake preferences for areas with specific bathymetric and ocean environmental conditions are believed to be linked to the oceanography of the NE Mediterranean ecosystem.  相似文献
