The Porter Physiology Development Program Fellowships have supported the predoctoral and postdoctoral studies of numerous minority students. All of the Fellows responding to the current survey continue to be involved in life sciences-related work, primarily as physiologists-in-training or as physiologists working in academia, government, or industry. Following receipt of their degree, the large majority of Fellows completed a single postdoctoral fellowship and entered their first professional position. Most employed past-Fellows spent at least part of their time engaged in research and were also involved in teaching, management, and administration. Respondents felt strongly that the Porter Fellowship had contributed to the quality of their pre/postdoctoral training. They felt it gave them intellectual freedom to select research advisors and topics or postdoctoral positions. They also felt the financial freedom provided by the Fellowship allowed them to concentrate on their research, contributing both to the quality of their work and to their overall career commitment. Fellows strongly recommended continuation of the program and offered suggestions for expansion and increased communication. Finally, one of the most powerful benefits of the program is in its longitudinal impact. Past Fellows now serve as role models for a new generation of minority students aspiring to careers in biomedical research. Some have their own graduate students who have received the Porter Fellowship. One such Fellow emphasized the importance of this aspect of the program: I was always told by my colleagues that I would be a good role model to minority students. Having Fellowships like the Porter Development Fellowship insures the training of minority professionals. Young minority students have hope of becoming scientists when they see those of us who have made it. I have graduate students who tell me that they want a laboratory and to do research like I am doing which makes me feel that I have accomplished something [important]. As stated earlier, the goal of the Porter Physiology Fellowship Program is to encourage diversity among students pursuing full-time studies toward the PhD (or DSc) in the physiological sciences, and to encourage their participation in the APS. The findings of this retrospective study suggest that the program has been highly successful in both of these aspects.  相似文献

A career in science is shaped by many factors, one of the most important being our tastes in research. These typically form early and are shaped by subsequent successes and failures. My tastes run to microscopes, chemistry, and spatial organization of cytoplasm. I will try to identify where they came from, how they shaped my career, and how they continue to evolve. My hope is to inspire young scientists to identify and celebrate their own unique tastes.  相似文献

Immunologists need to establish a vibrant dialogue with young people. This is not only important for the continuation and progress of biomedical research, but it can also contribute to the fight against diseases such as HIV/AIDS and can help young people to make informed decisions about lifestyle, medical treatment and ethical issues. Good communication skills are crucial to any scientific career, and the lessons learned from talking with non-scientists can also be useful when writing scientific papers and grants. This article is a personal account of one scientist's experience of communicating biomedical science to young people.  相似文献

The standpoint from which this article is written is that of development practitioners who work fairly continuously with community transformation processes, and with their peers in many disciplines who are trying to stimulate and support such processes. Drawing on three case examples, the authors put forward four lessons for an ecosystems approach to health development work. First, health and natural resource management professionals, and the technical solutions they create, cannot, by themselves, solve many of the problems communities face. To be effective, solutions have to address a complex set of variables that may be largely invisible to professionals from outside the communities. Creating a map of the human and natural systems within which a particular human health issue arises is often an important first step. Second, another reason why professionals cannot solve complex health challenges on their own is that, in the end, many of the solutions must be implemented by community people from the inside out. Therefore the “map” needs to include human dynamics and community capacity. Third, identifying and assessing the specific capacities that a community needs to address particular health determinants is therefore an important part of health development work. It is critical that community capacity assessment is not undertaken in the abstract, but rather in a way that links capacity assessment with real, ongoing work and through a participatory process that builds understanding and commitment within the community, and identifies clear pathways for future action. Finally, outside professionals working with a community contribute to its capacity to address critical health challenges, not only because of the technical knowledge and skills they bring, but also through the characteristics and attitudes they exhibit. It is therefore important that professionals build their own capacity to role model effective community practice.  相似文献

Japanese steeplejacks are good at working in high places as construction workers, and they have been called tobi for a longtime. They now play an important role in completing modern civil engineering projects and in the construction of high-rise buildings; however, their lifestyle is considered by most to be quaint but outdated. Originally, they were unskilled workmen at construction sites. In the 18th century, they were engaged in repairing houses or setting up scaffolding, helping carpenters, but they worked as firefighters whenever fires broke out. Their traditional work system did not change throughout the Meiji era, although Japanese society became greatly modernized. After World War II, the industrialization of Japanese society required highly developed technology in civil engineering and architecture. This provided an opportunity for them to establish their positions as trained professional workers. However, the number of skilled tobi professionals has continued to decrease because the younger generation does not consider this profession desirable career. Improving not only the professional skills but also the way of living to the extent as a modern high-tech society demands will be the key for the tobi's work system to become attractive.  相似文献

In the present climate of organ shortage, high demand for kidney transplants, and better clinical outcomes from living donors, health care professionals expect and encourage patients to accept offers of living related donor (LRD) kidneys. When patients decide not to adhere to this course of treatment, scholars and policy makers may question why, given that it delays their chances of receiving a transplant. This article reports on patients' decisions to refuse LRD kidney offers. An 18-month study was conducted of treatment decisions by hemodialysis patients (N = 79). Fewer than half of those offered an LRD kidney (N = 64) were willing to accept it, suggesting that sociocultural factors inform decisions. Patients expressed concerns about the potential donors' well-being over their own and about compromising their relationships with the donors. This article concludes that social relations, emotions, and ethnomedical beliefs play an important role in patients' treatment decisions and thus contributes to the anthropology of decision making.  相似文献

The information explosion in biology makes it difficult for researchers to stay abreast of current biomedical knowledge and to make sense of the massive amounts of online information. Ontologies--specifications of the entities, their attributes and relationships among the entities in a domain of discourse--are increasingly enabling biomedical researchers to accomplish these tasks. In fact, bio-ontologies are beginning to proliferate in step with accruing biological data. The myriad of ontologies being created enables researchers not only to solve some of the problems in handling the data explosion but also introduces new challenges. One of the key difficulties in realizing the full potential of ontologies in biomedical research is the isolation of various communities involved: some workers spend their career developing ontologies and ontology-related tools, while few researchers (biologists and physicians) know how ontologies can accelerate their research. The objective of this review is to give an overview of biomedical ontology in practical terms by providing a functional perspective--describing how bio-ontologies can and are being used. As biomedical scientists begin to recognize the many different ways ontologies enable biomedical research, they will drive the emergence of new computer applications that will help them exploit the wealth of research data now at their fingertips.  相似文献

Group decisions are required when group coordination is beneficial, but individuals can choose between alternatives. Despite the increased interest in animal group decision making, there is a lack of experimental field studies that investigate how animals with conflicting information make group decisions. In particular, no field studies have considered the influence of fission-fusion behaviour (temporary splitting into subgroups) on group decisions. We studied group decision making in two wild Bechstein's bat colonies, which are fission-fusion societies of stable individual composition. Since they frequently switch communal roosts, colony members must regularly make group decisions over where to roost. In the two-field experiments, we provided marked individuals with conflicting information about the suitability of potential roosts. We investigated whether conflicting information led to group decisions that followed a 'unanimous' or a 'majority' rule, or increased colony fission. Individual behaviour suggests that bats considered both their own information and the behaviour of others when deciding where to roost. Group decisions about communal roosts reflected the information available to a majority of the bats roosting together, but conflicting information led to an increased fission in one colony. Our results suggest that fission-fusion societies allow individuals to avoid majority decisions that are not in their favour.  相似文献

The role of the courts in 'communicating' with those affected by their decisions is contentious. Some legal commentators maintain that courts and legislators are able to communicate decisions effectively and that attempts to 'dumb down' the law will not make such decisions more accessible to doctors and other professionals. Justice Michael Kirby, on the other hand, seems to share the present author's view that judges could improve their communication of their decisions to a wider audience: 'In future, it seems inevitable that proceedings [of the High Court] will be broadcast live. Maybe one of the judges will explain the decisions of the court in simple terms as they are handed down ... Adaptation to new ways and values is part of the genius of our law, although some if its practitioners need to be dragged kicking and screaming to accomplish the changes' (emphasis added).(1) This article explores the position in Australia.  相似文献

The piglet is an important animal model in biomedical research; many aspects of its anatomy, physiology and metabolism are similar to those of the human neonate. The authors describe a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for piglets. This unit allows researchers to model neonatal care in the NICU and can be used for a range of research studies. The authors hope that the model they describe can serve as a template for other investigators who would like to design their own piglet NICUs.  相似文献

There are a number of challenges facing young people planning their future with little but a love of animals to guide them. Pursuing a successful career in veterinary medicine can be a trying experience; there are a limited number of highly competitive academic programs, and even if one manages to enroll in such a program and complete the degree, there remains the daunting dilemma of whether to proceed directly to private practice, or whether instead to strike out on a new path and explore an alternative career in animal medicine. The eleven men and women profiled here are all respected figures from the laboratory animal science community, representing a broad cross-section of backgrounds and interests: genetics researchers, exotic species specialists, animal welfare advocates, nutritionists, facility managers, and so forth. Some worked their way through veterinary school and private practice before deciding on a radical career shift that brought them to where they are now, others started their careers in a laboratory, while others still followed a more indirect path, guided only by chance, curiosity, and a love of animals.All eleven, however, have each made their own unique contribution to the field, and Lab Animal has invited them to tell their own stories, in their own words, to illustrate some of the interesting, entertaining, and surprising turns a career in laboratory animal science can take.  相似文献

Women in Kofyar society appear to have considerable independence and social power though their institutionalized roles in patrilineal kin groups and village politics are minimal, they own little property, they marry virilocally, and they play a subordinate part in religious observances. They do, however, make important economic decisions in allocating their own incomes and labor services. They also have the right to either terminate their marriages or to accept lovers in a socially recognized relationship. With a relatively unimportant sexual division of labor and limited marital and economic control, husbands are able to achieve little domestic authority over their wives. Migration of health professionals is an important policy issue for both source and destination countries around the world. The majority of migrant care workers in industrialized countries today are women. However, the dimension of mobility of highly skilled females from countries of the global south has been almost entirely neglected for many years. This paper explores the experiences of high-skilled female African migrant health-workers (MHW) utilising the framework of Global Care Chain (GCC) research. In the frame of the EU-project HURAPRIM (Human Resources for Primary Health Care in Africa), the research team conducted 88 semi-structured interviews with female and male African MHWs in five countries (Botswana, South Africa, Belgium, Austria, UK) from July 2011 until April 2012. For this paper we analysed the 34 interviews with female physicians and nurses using the qualitative framework analysis approach and the software atlas.ti. In terms of the effect of the migration on their career, almost all of the respondents experienced short-term, long-term or permanent inability to work as health-care professionals; few however also reported a positive career development post-migration. Discrimination based on a foreign nationality, race or gender was reported by many of our respondents, physicians and nurses alike, whether they worked in an African or a European country. Our study shows that in addition to the phenomenon of deskilling often reported in GCC research, many female MHW are unable to work according to their qualifications due to the fact that their diplomas are not recognized in the country of destination. Policy strategies are needed regarding integration of migrants in the labour market and working against discrimination based on race and gender.  相似文献

Humans'' predictions of another person''s behaviour are regularly influenced by what they themselves might know or want. In a previous study, we found that male Eurasian jays (Garrulus glandarius) could cater for their female partner''s current desire when sharing food with her. Here, we tested the extent to which the males'' decisions are influenced by their own current desire. When the males'' and female''s desires matched, males correctly shared the food that was desired by both. When the female''s desire differed from their own, the males'' decisions were not entirely driven by their own desires, suggesting that males also took the female''s desire into account. Thus, the male jays'' decisions about their mates'' desires are partially biased by their own desire and might be based upon similar processes as those found in humans.  相似文献

A study was undertaken of the career paths and decisions, and the factors influencing the decisions, of the first six graduating classes of McMaster University''s medical school. Climate and geography, preference for urban or rural living and influence of spouse were the factors that most influenced the location of practice, although the graduates who moved to the United States considered economic factors important too. Nearly one third of the specialists were practising in the United States. Personal challenge and positive clinical experience in the field were the major influences on choice of medical field. Graduates entering a specialty were more likely than those entering primary care to consider encouragement of others, a positive example set by medical school faculty members, working hours and research experience in the field as important influences on their choice of medical field. Data are needed on the career decisions, and the factors affecting them, of the graduates of all Canadian medical schools if Canadian medical manpower planning is to be realistic.  相似文献

Chimpanzees in captivity have grown up in a rather unnatural social environment and there frequently are problems when they have to nurse their own offspring. It is most remarkable that a chimpanzee mother in a captive colony, who had lost her child almost immediately after birth, adopted without problems a five-week-old infant, which had been reared by humans from the day of its birth. Successful adoption has not been reported for feral chimpanzees; similar cases in captivity are not known.  相似文献

In risky environments, where threats are unpredictable and the quality of information about threats is variable, all individuals face two fundamental challenges: balancing vigilance against other activities, and determining when to respond to warning signals. The solution to both is to obtain continuous estimates of background risk, enabling vigilance to be concentrated during the riskiest periods and informing about the likely cost of ignoring warnings. Human surveillance organizations routinely produce such estimates, frequently derived from indirect cues. Here we show that vigilant individuals in an animal society (the pied babbler, Turdoides bicolor) perform a similar role. We ask (i) whether, in the absence of direct predator threats, pied babbler sentinels react to indirect information associated with increased risk and whether they communicate this information to group mates; (ii) whether group mates use this information to adjust their own vigilance, and whether this influences foraging success; and (iii) whether information provided by sentinels reduces the likelihood of inappropriate responses to alarm calls. Using playback experiments, we show that: (i) sentinels reacted to indirect predator cues (in the form of heterospecific alarm calls) by giving graded surveillance calls; (ii) foragers adjusted their vigilance in reaction to changes in surveillance calls, with substantial effects on foraging success; and (iii) foragers reduced their probability of responding to alarm calls when surveillance calls indicated lowered risk. These results demonstrate that identifying attacks as they occur is only part of vigilance: equally important is continuous surveillance providing information necessary for individuals to make decisions about their own vigilance and evasive action. Moreover, they suggest that a major benefit of group living is not only the increased likelihood of detecting threats, but a marked improvement in the quality of information available to each individual.  相似文献

Clinical proteomics is an emerging field that deals with the use of proteomic technologies for medical applications. With a major objective of identifying proteins involved in pathological processes and as potential biomarkers, this field is already gaining momentum. Consequently, clinical proteomics data are being generated at a rapid pace, although mechanisms of sharing such data with the biomedical community lag far behind. Most of these data are either provided as supplementary information through journal web sites or directly made available by the authors through their own web resources. Integration of these data within a single resource that displays information in the context of individual proteins is likely to enhance the use of proteomic data in biomedical research. Human Proteinpedia is one such portal that unifies human proteomic data under a single banner. The goal of this resource is to ultimately capture and integrate all proteomic data obtained from individual studies on normal and diseased tissues. We anticipate that harnessing of these data will help prioritize experiments related to protein targets and also permit meta-analysis to uncover molecular signatures of disease. Finally, we encourage all biomedical investigators to maximize dissemination of their valuable proteomic data to rest of the community by active participation in existing repositories such as Human Proteinpedia.  相似文献

At most medical schools, students are offered limited or sporadic experiences in plastic surgery. This is unfortunate because all physicians need to possess the knowledge and skills to evaluate skin lesions and participate in wound management. Also, students who are considering a career in plastic surgery do not have adequate information to make informed decisions. With the restructuring of plastic surgery training programs, career decisions of individuals interested in plastic surgery are being made earlier than ever before in the education continuum, and the aforementioned problem assumes greater magnitude both for the students and the faculty. At MCP-Hahnemann School of Medicine, basic plastic surgery experiences have been integrated into the third-year surgery clerkship as a requirement for all students, and a Plastic Surgery Pathway has been designed in conjunction with the school's pathway system for fourth-year students. The Pathway provides a framework for the student to select a combination of rotations that will best provide an appropriate broad-based education in preparation for training in plastic surgery, and it provides extensive guidance by faculty members in the discipline to assist with career decisions, rotation selection, and preparations for the residency application process. Students in the Plastic Surgery Pathway are required to take rotations in medicine, neurology, and plastic surgery. The remaining rotations are selected from a list of options based on the student's individual learning needs, interests, and career aspirations. Early experience with the Plastic Surgery Pathway has shown that it has been well received by students and faculty, has assisted students with their career decisions, and has led to an increased student awareness of the importance and relevance of the specialty.  相似文献
