Interest in the use of inoculants containing bacteria that promote plant growth is likely to increase in the coming years, due to higher costs of fertilizers, concerns over pollution and emphasis on sustainable agriculture. Although Brazil has a long tradition in research on nitrogen fixation in Azospirillum-grass associations, it has not led to recommendations of strains for use in commercial inoculants. In this study, we report the selection and evaluation of Azospirillum strains for the maize (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crops, following protocols established by the Brazilian legislature, i.e. field experiments have to be performed in at least two different localities representing the crop growing regions, and for at least two seasons. In a first set of nine trials performed at Londrina and Ponta Grossa, southern Brazil, nine Azospirillum strains were evaluated after application to seeds as peat-based inoculants. A. brasilense strains Ab-V4, Ab-V5, Ab-V6 and Ab-V7 increased grain yields of maize by 662–823 kg ha?1, or 24–30%, in relation to non-inoculated controls. Two A. lipoferum strains were tested in two of these experiments and promising results were also obtained. With wheat, A. brasilense strains Ab-V1, Ab-V5, Ab-V6 and Ab-V8 were the most effective, increasing yields by 312–423 kg ha?1, or 13–18%. In a second trial set with eight field experiments at Londrina an Ponta Grossa, liquid and peat-based inoculants carrying a combination of A. brasilense strains Ab-V5 and Ab-V6 increased maize and wheat yields by 27% and 31%, respectively. Effects of inoculation were attributed to general increases in uptake of several macro and micronutrients and not specifically to biological nitrogen fixation. All experiments received only a low N-fertilizer starter at sowing (24 kg and 20 kg of N ha?1 for the maize and wheat, respectively) and although yields can be globally considered low, they were compatible with Brazilian mean yields. This study resulted in the identification of the first Azospirillum strains authorized for the production of commercial inoculants in Brazil.  相似文献

Study of endophytic bacteria within plant seeds is very essential and meaningful on account of their heritability and versatility. This study investigated Bacillus bacterial communities within the seeds of four commercial tomato varieties, by 16S rRNA gene PCR-RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism). Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the 22 representative isolates belonged to five species of genus Bacillus and the bacterial compositions showed remarkable differences among tomato varieties. Isolates exhibited multiple plant growth promoting (PGP) traits: 37 % of indole-3-acetic acid production; 37 % of phosphate solubilization; 24 % of siderophores production; 85 % of potential nitrogen fixation and 6 % of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase activity. Isolate HYT-12-1 was shown to have highest ACC deaminase activity (112.02 nmol α-ketobutyrate mg?1 protein h?1) among the five ACC deamiase producing strains. 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicated that the isolate HYT-12-1 shared the highest sequence similarity (100 %) with B. subtilis. PGP experiments under gnotobiotic and greenhouse conditions revealed the ability of strain HYT-12-1 to enhance the growth of tomato seedlings. This is the first study to describe endophytic Bacillus communities within tomato seeds, and the results suggest that B. subtilis strain HYT-12-1 would have a great potential for industrial application as biofertilizer in the future.  相似文献

The effects of nitrogen (N) deposition and management practices on leaf litterfall and N and P return in Moso bamboo forest are not yet known. In this study, we investigated the effects of four levels of simulated N deposition, including low-N (N30, 30 kg ha?1 year?1), medium-N (N60, 60 kg ha?1 year?1), and high-N (N90, 90 kg ha?1 year?1), and a control with no N (N-free addition). The experiment was performed in a Moso bamboo forest under conventional management (CM) and intensive management (IM). The results showed that leaf litterfall and N and P return occurred mainly from March to June and accounted for 78.2–82.2, 78.5–82.1, and 85.6–94.6% of annual leaf litterfall, N return, and P return, respectively. Unlike CM, IM significantly increased leaf litterfall and N and P return. The positive effects were further amplified by low- and medium-N deposition, but not high-N deposition. The combination of low- and medium-N deposition and IM significantly increased N and P return, but not litterfall. Our results indicated that the interaction of anthropogenic management practices and N deposition need to be considered when estimating the effects of N deposition on the biogeochemical cycle of a forest ecosystem.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of plant growth regulator (PGR) (no PGR, trinexapac-ethyl, and paclobutrazol) and N fertilizer (zero N, an average of 37 kg N ha?1 month?1, 6 and 12 kg N ha?1 week?1) on soil organic C (SOC) and soil N in creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) fairway turf. After 4 years of field experiments soil samples were obtained from soil depths of 0–2.5, 2.5–5, 5–7.5, 7.5–10, 10–15, 15–20, and 20–30 cm. Soil bulk density, SOC, total N, NO 3 ? –N, and NH 4 + –N concentrations were determined. Paclobutrazol and trinexapac-ethyl application increased SOC. The 37 kg N ha?1 month?1 application increased SOC at the 0–2.5 cm depth with both PGRs. When paclobutrazol was used, N fertilizer always increased SOC; however, the greatest increase was observed with the 12 kg N ha?1 week?1 application when compared to other rates, inversely related to the NH 4 + –N concentration. Nitrogen application increased soil total N and NO 3 ? –N in the upper three depths. The application of PGRs and N fertilizer to creeping bentgrass fairway turf is an effective strategy for promoting C sequestration.  相似文献

A quantitative measurement of the mass and carbon (C) of nodules in legume crops will provide more accurate estimate of total C entering to the soil. This study quantified the ratios of C in roots and nodules in relation to above-ground plant tissue (AG) for chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). The cultivars ‘CDC-Anna’ and ‘CDC-Frontier’ were grown in continuously-cropped no-till wheat stubble and conventionally-tilled summer fallow systems under three rates (0, 28 and 84 kg N ha?1) of N fertilizers in Swift Current and Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, Canada, in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The AG biomass ranged between 4,680 and 7,250 kg ha?1 and increased with the application of N fertilizer ≥28 kg N ha?1. The nodule mass measured at the early flowering stage ranged between 143 and 355 kg ha?1, accounting for 2 to 6% of the total AG biomass. Nodule mass decreased significantly from the early flowering to the late-flowering stages (3 wk between). The C value averaged from 1,970 to 2,640 kg ha?1 in the AG parts, 866 to 1,161 kg ha?1 in roots and 82 to 184 kg ha?1 in nodules. The C value in the nodules was 32% greater for chickpea grown in the no-till system than in the tilled-fallow system. CDC-Frontier had 34% greater C value in AG and roots, and 76% greater in nodules than CDC-Anna. Below-ground C (roots plus nodules) accounted for 50% that of the AG tissue at N?=?0 kg ha?1, and decreased to 45% as N increased to 84 kg ha?1. At N?=?0 kg ha?1, the C allocation among plant parts was in the ratio of 67: 29: 4, respectively, in the above-ground tissues: roots: nodules; at N?=?84 kg ha?1, this ratio was shifted to 69: 30: 1. The quantitative C allocation coefficients can be of great value to modellers in estimating total C contribution to the soil by annual legumes.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) biogeochemistry of a mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand subjected to an average total atmospheric N deposition of 48 kg ha?1 year?1 was studied during the period 1992–2007. The annual amount of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in throughfall (TF) averaged 34 kg ha?1 year?1 over the 16-year monitoring period. The throughfall fluxes contained also considerable amounts of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) (5–8.5 kg N ha?1 year?1), which should be incorporated in the estimate of N flux using throughfall collectors. Throughfall DIN fluxes declined at a rate of ?0.9 kg N ha?1 year?1, mainly due to the decreasing TF fluxes of ammonium (NH4), which accounted for 70% to TF DIN. The decrease in TF DIN was accompanied by a decrease in DIN leaching in the seepage water (?1.6 kg N ha?1 year?1), which occurred exclusively as nitrate (NO3 ?). Nitrate losses in the leachate of the forest floor (LFH) equalled the TF NO3 ? delivered to the LFH-layer. On the contrary, about half of the TF NH4 + was retained within the LFH-layer. Approximately 60% of the TF DIN fluxes were leached indicating that N inputs were far in excess of the N requirements of the forest. For DON, losses were only substantial from the LFH-layer, but no DON was leached in the seepage water. Despite the high N losses through nitrate leaching and NO x emission, the forest was still accumulating N, especially in the aggrading LFH-layer. The forest stand, on the contrary, was found to be a poor N sink.  相似文献

Grassland canopy management (spring burn, mowing and residue removal in late-summer, or no management) and native tallgrass species composition (cool season mixture, warm season mixture, or combined cool and warm mixture) effects on C and N in aboveground biomass and soil were investigated at Brookings SD on a previously-plowed Barnes clay loam (fine-loamy, superactive, frigid Calcic Hapludoll). During the last 2 yr of the 9-yr experiment, shoot biomass was affected by canopy management with the burn (2,730 kg ha?1) and mow (3,421 kg ha?1) treatments containing less than no management (4,655 kg ha?1). Burn treatment biomass contained 1,189 kg ha?1 and 25 kg ha?1 of C and N, mow contained 1,433 kg ha?1 and 33 kg ha?1 of C and N, while no management contained 2,014 kg ha?1 and 39 kg ha?1 of C and N, respectively. Soil C accumulation was independent of grass species composition. Soil C accumulation rates, which increased in strong linear fashion (r 2 of 0.89 to 0.92) after initial grass establishment, were 387 kg C ha?1 yr?1, 503 kg C ha?1 yr?1, and 711 kg C ha?1 yr?1 for burn, mow, and no management treatments, respectively. Thus, grassland management methods used after conversion of cropland to grassland have important effects on grass biomass and soil C accumulation.  相似文献

Aims

Effects of different soil amendments were investigated on methane (CH4) emission, soil quality parameters and rice productivity in irrigated paddy field of Bangladesh.

Methods

The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with five treatments and three replications. The experimental treatments were urea (220 kg ha?1) + rice straw compost (2 t ha?1) as a control, urea (170 kg ha?1) + rice straw compost (2 t ha?1) + silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + sesbania biomass (2 t ha?1 ) + silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + azolla biomass (2 t ha?1) + cyanobacterial mixture 15 kg ha?1 silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + cattle manure compost (2 t ha?1) + silicate fertilizer.

Results

The average of two growing seasons CH4 flux 132 kg ha?1 was recorded from the conventional urea (220 kg ha?1) with rice straw compost incorporated field plot followed by 126.7 (4 % reduction), 130.7 (1.5 % reduction), 116 (12 % reduction) and 126 (5 % reduction) kg CH4 flux ha?1 respectively, with rice straw compost, sesbania biomass, azolla anabaena and cattle manure compost in combination urea and silicate fertilizer applied plots. Rice grain yield was increased by 15 % and 10 % over the control (4.95 Mg ha?1) with silicate plus composted cattle manure and silicate plus azolla anabaena, respectively. Soil quality parameters such as soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon, soil redox status and cations exchange capacity were improved with the added organic materials and azolla biofertilizer amendments with silicate slag and optimum urea application (170 kg ha?1) in paddy field.

Conclusion

Integrated application of silicate fertilizer, well composted organic manures and azolla biofertilizer could be an effective strategy to minimize the use of conventional urea fertilizer, reducing CH4 emissions, improving soil quality parameters and increasing rice productivity in subtropical countries like Bangladesh.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) deficiency is a major constraint to the productivity of the African smallholder farming systems. Grain, green manure and forage legumes have the potential to improve the soil N fertility of smallholder farming systems through biological N2-fixation. The N2-fixation of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), soyabean (Glycine max), groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus), lablab (Lablab purpureus), velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens), crotalaria (Crotalaria ochroleuca), jackbean (Canavalia ensiformis), desmodium (Desmodium uncinatum), stylo (Stylosanthes guianensis) and siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum) was assessed using the 15N natural abundance method. The experiments were conducted at three sites in western Kenya, selected on an agro-ecological zone (AEZ) gradient defined by rainfall. On a relative scale, Museno represents high potential AEZ 1, Majengo medium potential AEZ 2 and Ndori low potential AEZ 3. Rainfall in the year of experimentation was highest in AEZ 2, followed by AEZ 1 and AEZ 3. Experimental fields were classified into high, medium and low fertility classes, to assess the influence of soil fertility on N2-fixation performance. The legumes were planted with triple super phosphate (TSP) at 30 kg P ha?1, with an extra soyabean plot planted without TSP (soyabean-P), to assess response to P, and no artificial inoculation was done. Legume grain yield, shoot N accumulation, %N derived from N2-fixation, N2-fixation and net N inputs differed significantly (P<0.01) with rainfall and soil fertility. Mean grain yield ranged from 0.86 Mg ha?1, in AEZ 2, to 0.30 Mg ha?1, in AEZ 3, and from 0.78 Mg ha?1, in the high fertility field, to 0.48 Mg ha?1, in the low fertility field. Shoot N accumulation ranged from a maximum of 486 kg N ha?1 in AEZ 2, to a minimum of 10 kg N ha?1 in AEZ 3. Based on shoot biomass estimates, the species fixed 25–90% of their N requirements in AEZ 2, 23–90% in AEZ 1, and 7–77% in AEZ 3. Mean N2-fixation by green manure legumes ranged from 319 kg ha?1 (velvet bean) in AEZ 2 to 29 kg ha?1 (jackbean) in AEZ 3. For the forage legumes, mean N2-fixation ranged from 97 kg N ha?1 for desmodium in AEZ 2 to 39 kg N ha?1 for siratro in AEZ 3, while for the grain legumes, the range was from 172 kg N ha?1 for lablab in AEZ 1 to 3 kg N ha?1 for soyabean-P in AEZ 3. Lablab and groundnut showed consistently greater N2-fixation and net N inputs across agro-ecological and soil fertility gradients. The use of maize as reference crop resulted in lower N2-fixation values than when broad-leaved weed plants were used. The results demonstrate differential contributions of the green manure, forage and grain legume species to soil fertility improvement in different biophysical niches in smallholder farming systems and suggest that appropriate selection is needed to match species with the niches and farmers’ needs.  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization on composition of rhizobacterial communities of volcanic soils (Andisols) from southern Chile at molecular level is poorly understood. This paper investigates the composition of rhizobacterial communities of two Andisols under pasture after 1- and 6-year applications of N (urea) and P (triple superphosphate). Soil samples were collected from two previously established sites and the composition of rhizobacterial communities was determined by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR–DGGE). The difference in the composition and diversity between rhizobacterial communities was assessed by nonmetric multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis and the Shannon–Wiener index. In Site 1 (fertilized for 1 year), PCR–DGGE targeting 16S rRNA genes and MDS analysis showed that moderate N application (270 kg N ha?1 year?1) without P significantly changed the composition of rhizobacterial communities. However, no significant community changes were observed with P (240 kg P ha?1 year?1) and N–P application (270 kg N ha?1 year?1 plus 240 kg P ha?1 year?1). In Site 2 (fertilized for 6 years with P; 400 kg P ha?1 year?1), PCR–DGGE targeting rpoB, nifH, amoA and alkaline phosphatase genes and MDS analysis showed changes in rhizobacterial communities only at the highest rate of N application (600 kg N ha?1 year?1). Quantitative PCR targeting 16S rRNA genes also showed higher abundance of bacteria at higher N application. In samples from both sites, the Shannon–Wiener index did not show significant difference in the diversity of rhizobacterial communities. The changes observed in rhizobacterial communities coincide in N fertilized pastures with lower soil pH and higher pasture yields. This study indicates that N–P application affects the soil bacterial populations at molecular level and needs to be considered when developing fertilizer practices for Chilean pastoral Andisols.  相似文献

Energy sorghum tolerates adverse climatic and edaphic conditions and has great potential as biofuel feedstock in marginal land. This study investigates the potential energy sorghum biomass production and uptake of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) on a sandy loam marginal land in a semi-arid region, in order to define optimum N fertilizer rate to produce the highest biomass yield with minimal nutrient elimination. Five N rate treatments (0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 kg ha?1) and two sorghum varieties (sweet type Guotian-8 (GT-8) and biomass type Guoneng-11 (GN-11)) were used. Yield increment was observed as N level increased, but the standout treatment appeared to be N rate of 60 kg ha?1 which significantly increased biomass yield vs. controls by 68.8% in 2014 and 64.1% in 2015. Biomass yield exhibited non-significant differences between N rate treatments from 60 to 240 kg ha?1, although the highest biomass yield (9.2–11.9 t ha?1) was observed in the 120 kg N ha?1 treatment. Nutrient analysis showed that N, P, and K accumulation in aboveground plants increased with N rate increase, ranging between 32.2 and 119.1, 7.9 and 19.2, and 22.1 and 94.0 kg ha?1, respectively, for the highest N rate of 240 kg ha?1. Substantial amounts of N were extracted from the soil in control and 60 kg N ha?1 treatments, despite the low fertility and organic matter content of the soil. Moreover, nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) was maximized at lower N rates. A decline in physiological N use efficiency (PNUE) resulted in decreased agronomic N use efficiency (ANUE) at higher N rates. Hence, it is concluded that N fertilizer rate between 60 and 120 kg ha?1 would be the optimal N requirement to facilitate sustainable production of energy sorghum on a sandy wasteland.  相似文献

In order to understand the influence of nitrogen (N) deposition on the key processes relevant to the carbon (C) balance in a bamboo plantation, a two-year field experiment involving the simulated deposition of N in a Pleioblastus amarus plantation was conducted in the rainy region of SW China. Four levels of N treatments: control (no N added), low-N (50 kg N ha?1 year?1), medium-N (150 kg N ha?1 year?1), and high-N (300 kg N ha?1 year?1) were set in the present study. The results showed that soil respiration followed a clear seasonal pattern, with the maximum rates in mid-summer and the minimum in late winter. The annual cumulative soil respiration was 585?±?43 g CO2-C m?2 year?1 in the control plots. Simulated N deposition significantly increased the mean annual soil respiration rate, fine root biomass, soil microbial biomass C (MBC), and N concentration in fine roots and fresh leaf litter. Soil respirations exhibited a positive exponential relationship with soil temperature, and a linear relationship with MBC. The net primary production (NPP) ranged from 10.95 to 15.01 Mg C ha?1 year?1 and was higher than the annual soil respiration (5.85 to 7.62 Mg C ha?1 year?1) in all treatments. Simulated N deposition increased the net ecosystem production (NEP), and there was a significant difference between the control and high N treatment NEP, whereas, the difference of NEP among control, low-N, and medium-N was not significant. Results suggest that N controlled the primary production in this bamboo plantation ecosystem. Simulated N deposition increased the C sequestration of the P. amarus plantation ecosystem through increasing the plant C pool, though CO2 emission through soil respiration was also enhanced.  相似文献

Background

Most endophytic bacteria in consortia, which provide robust and broad metabolic capacity, are attractive for applications in plant metabolic engineering. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of engineered endophytic bacterial strains on rice sprout ethylene level and growth under saline stress. A protocol was developed to synthesize engineered strains by expressing bacterial 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase gene on cells of endophytic Enterobacter sp. E5 and Kosakonia sp. S1 (denoted as E5P and S1P, respectively).

Results

Results showed that ACC deaminase activities of the engineered strains E5P and S1P were significantly higher than those of the wild strains E5 and S1. About 32–41% deaminase was expressed on the surface of the engineered strains. Compared with the controls without inoculation, inoculation with the wild and engineered strains increased the deaminase activities of sprouts. Inoculation with the engineered strains increased 15–21% more deaminase activities of sprouts than with the wild strains, and reduced the ethylene concentrations of sprouts more significantly than with wild strains (P < 0.05). Inoculation with the wild and engineered strains promoted the growth of sprouts, while the promoting effects were more profound with the engineered strains than with the wild strains. The engineered strains improved saline resistance of sprouts under salt concentrations from 10 to 25 g L?1. The engineered strains promoted longer roots and shoots than the wild strains under the salt stresses, indicating that the ACC deaminases on the endophytic bacterial cells could result in plant-produced ACC degradation and inhibit plant ethylene formation.

Conclusions

The protocols of expressing enzymes on endophytic bacterial cells showed greater potentials than those of plant over-expressed enzymes to increase the efficiency of plant metabolic pathways.

Water and nutrient budgets were constructed for 13 low-lying peat polders in the Netherlands that varied in elevation relative to sea level (?0.2 to ?2.4 m below sea level), land use (7–70% of the total polder area covered by agriculture; largely dairy farming), and surface water prevalence (6–43%). Water balances were verified with chloride budgets and accepted when both met the criterion (total inflows ? total outflows)/(total inflows) <0.05. Apart from precipitation and evapotranspiration (overall means 913 vs. 600 mm), in- and outlet (171 vs. 420 mm) as well as in- and outward seepage (137 vs. 174 mm) were important items in the water budgets. Nutrient budgets, however, were dominated by terms related to agricultural land use (~60% of all inputs, 90% of N-removal and 80% of P removal) rather than water fluxes (8% and 5% of N and P inputs; 6 and 18% of outputs). After agriculture (200 kg N ha?1 y?1), mineralisation of the peat soil and atmospheric deposition appear to be important inputs (about 94 and 21 kg N ha?1 y?1). Major output terms were agricultural output (209 kg N ha?1 y?1) and denitrification (95 kg N ha?1 y?1). The average N budget was in balance (difference ~1 kg N ha?1 y?1), whereas P accumulated in most polders, particularly those under agriculture. The mean P surplus (15 kg P ha?1 y?1 in the 9 mainly agricultural polders) corresponds well with the accumulated difference observed elsewhere (700 kg P ha?1 in the upper 50 cm in a nature reserve versus 1400 under agriculture) after over 50 years of dairy farming. Bulk retention of N and P in these polders is taking place in the peat soil, through temporary sorption to the matrix and N is lost through denitrification. In a principal components analysis combining land use, landscape pattern, water balance and nutrient budget terms, the three-first principal components explained 63% of the variability. The first component (PC) correlated strongly with the percentage of land under agriculture (r = 0.82) and negatively with the percentage covered by surface water (r = ?0.74). Most input and output terms of the nitrogen budget also correlated with this PC. The second PC covaried distinctly with the total area of a polder (r = ?0.79) and human population density at municipality level (r = 0.75). Phosphorus loads in inlet and outlet water correlated with this PC. This suggests that the variability in nutrient budgets among polders is largely governed by agricultural land use.  相似文献

The lack of understanding of nitrate dynamics in soil profiles of semiarid regions hampers the assessment of the environmental risks associated with nitrate. A long-term field experiment established in the Loess Plateau of Northwest China in 1984 was used to investigate the seasonal dynamics of water and nitrate contents in the soil profile (0–300 cm) under bare fallow and continuous winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with various fertilizer treatments. For treatments without mineral N input (i.e., no fertilizer, farmyard manure alone, and with P fertilizer), the amount of nitrate accumulated in the soil profile (52–120 kg N ha?1, the average for June, August, February and April) was significantly lower than that (292 kg N ha?1) accumulated in the bare fallow treatment. A large amount of nitrate (1,065 kg N ha?1) was found accumulated in the soil profile with the treatment applied with mineral N at a rate of 120 kg N ha?1 year?1 for 17 years (1984–2001) and this nitrate moved downward during the wet season (from August to February). Clearly, the amount of nitrate accumulated in the soil profiles, and its tendency of downward movement, appears to potentially be an environmental risk as it may reach groundwater. Fertilization as mineral N fertilizers coupled with FYM or P resulted in 50–70% less nitrate accumulation in the soil profiles than that using mineral N fertilizer alone, and therefore the environmental risk was reduced. It is proposed that a “break point” of nitrate distribution existed in the soil profiles, providing an indication of soil depth to which nitrate can transfer.  相似文献

The Gallery forests of the Cerrado biome play a critical role in controlling stream chemistry but little information about biogeochemical processes in these ecosystems is available. This work describes the fluxes of N and P in solutions along a topographic gradient in a gallery forest. Three distinct floristic communities were identified along the gradient: a wet community nearest the stream, an upland dry community adjacent to the woodland savanna and an intermediate community between the two. Transects were marked in the three communities for sampling. Fluxes of N from bulk precipitation to these forests resulted in deposition of 12.6 kg ha?1 y?1 of total N of which 8.8 kg ha?1 was as inorganic N. The throughfall flux of total N was generally <8.4 kg ha?1 year?1. Throughfall NO3?CN fluxes were higher (7?C32%) while NH4?CN and organic N fluxes were lower (54?C69% and 5?C46%) than those in bulk precipitation. The throughfall flux was slightly lower for the wet forest community compared to other communities. Litter leachate fluxes differed among floristic communities with higher NH4?CN in the wet community. The total N flux was greater in the wet forest than in the dry forest (13.5 vs. 9.4 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively). The stream water had total N flux of 0.3 kg ha?1 year?1. The flux of total P through bulk precipitation was 0.7 kg ha?1 year?1 while the mean fluxes of total P in throughfall (0.6 kg ha?1 year?1) and litter leachate (0.5 kg ha?1 year?1) declined but did not differ between communities. The low concentrations presented in soil solution and low fluxes in stream water (0.3 and 0.1 kg ha?1 year?1 for N and P, respectively) relative to other flowpaths emphasize the conservative nutrient cycling of these forests and the importance of internal recycling processes for the maintenance and conservation of riparian and stream ecosystems in the Cerrado.  相似文献

Organic fertilizers can improve soil health while providing nutrients for perennial grass growth for bioenergy feedstock, particularly under marginal soil conditions. The impact of organic fertilizer application on perennial grass composition needs clarification. Our objective was to evaluate feedstock composition, and N, P, and K dynamics of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.)], and reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) provided with either inorganic or organic fertilizer sources. Grasses were established on a sandy soil and a clay soil at the Cornell University Willsboro Research Farm in Willsboro, NY. The experiment was a split-split plot randomization of a randomized block design with six replicates. Sites were whole plots, grass species were subplots, and fertility treatments were sub-subplots. Six treatments were (1) 168 kg ha?1 of N fertilizer for cool-season grasses; 84 kg ha?1 for switchgrass, (2) 56 kg ha?1 of 0-46-0 P fertilizer plus N (#1), (3) 112 kg ha?1 of 0-0-60 K fertilizer plus N (#1), (4) 89.6 Mg dairy manure ha?1, (5) 44.8 Mg dairy manure compost ha?1, and (6) a control without fertilizer. Organic fertilizers produced a net positive P and K balance, while other treatments had negative balances. Organic fertilizer treatments resulted in lower lignin and gross energy values, and higher total ash and Cl, compared to inorganic fertilizer treatments. Switchgrass biomass had higher fiber and gross energy, lower total ash, and much lower Cl content under organic fertilizer applications than cool-season grasses, making switchgrass a more desirable feedstock regardless of conversion process.  相似文献

Background

Although plant growth in alpine steppes on the Tibetan Plateau has been suggested to be sensitive to nitrogen (N) addition, the N limitation conditions of alpine steppes remain uncertain.

Methods

After 2 years of fertilization with NH4NO3 at six rates (0, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 kg N ha?1 yr?1), the responses of plant and soil parameters as well as N2O fluxes were measured.

Results

At the vegetation level, N addition resulted in an increase in the aboveground N pool from 0.5?±?0.1 g m?2 in the control plots to 1.9?±?0.2 g m?2 in the plots at the highest N input rate. The aboveground C pool, biomass N concentration, foliar δ15N, soil NO3 ?-N and N2O flux were also increased by N addition. However, as the N fertilization rate increased from 10 kg N ha?1 yr?1 to 160 kg N ha?1 yr?1, the N-use efficiency decreased from 12.3?±?4.6 kg C kg N?1 to 1.6?±?0.2 kg C kg N?1, and the N-uptake efficiency decreased from 43.2?±?9.7 % to 9.1?±?1.1 %. Biomass N:P ratios increased from 14.4?±?2.6 in the control plots to 20.5?±?0.8 in the plots with the highest N input rate. Biomass N:P ratios, N-uptake efficiency and N-use efficiency flattened out at 40 kg N ha?1 yr?1. Above this level, soil NO3 ?-N began to accumulate. The seasonal average N2O flux of growing season nonlinearly increased with increased N fertilization rate and linearly increased with the weighted average foliar δ15N. At the species level, N uptake responses to relative N availability were species-specific. Biomass N concentration of seven out of the eight non-legume species increased significantly with N fertilization rates, while Kobresia macrantha and the one legume species (Oxytropics glacialis) remained stable. Both the non-legume and the legume species showed significant 15N enrichment with increasing N fertilization rate. All non-legume species showed significant increased N:P ratios with increased N fertilization rate, but not the legume species.

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that the Tibetan alpine steppes might be N-saturated above a critical N load of 40 kg N ha?1 yr?1. For the entire Tibetan Plateau (ca. 2.57 million km2), a low N deposition rate (10 kg N ha?1 yr?1) could enhance plant growth, and stimulate aboveground N and C storage by at least 1.1?±?0.3 Tg N yr?1 and 31.5?±?11.8 Tg C yr?1, respectively. The non-legume species was N-limited, but the legume species was not limited by N.  相似文献

Long-term yield studies in perennial crops like miscanthus are important to determine mean annual energy yield and the farmer’s economy. In two Danish field trials, annual yield of two miscanthus genotypes was followed over a 20-year period. The trials were established in 1993 on loamy sand in Foulum and on coarse sand in Jyndevad. Effects of genotype, row distance and fertilization were investigated. In both trials, yield development over time was characterized by an increase during the first years, optimum yields after 7–8 years and a decrease to a lower level which remained relatively constant from year 11 to 20. Spring harvest reduced the yield by 34–42 % compared to autumn harvest. In Foulum annual fertilization with 75 kg ha?1 N increased the yield of the genotype Goliath (Miscanthus sinensis) by 26 %. Additional N fertilization only increased the yield of Goliath little, and the genotype Giganteus (Miscanthus?×?giganteus) did not respond to fertilization at all. The highest mean yield in Foulum for the period 1997–2012 was obtained with the shortest row distance (~18,000 rather than ~12,000 plants ha?1) and harvested in late autumn, namely 13.1 and 12.0 Mg ha?1 DM annually for Giganteus and Goliath, respectively. In Jyndevad, where only Goliath was studied, the highest yield during 1995–2001 was obtained by short row distance, autumn harvest and annual fertilization with 75 kg ha?1 N, with yield increasing up to 116 % in response to fertilization. A mean yield of 14.4 Mg ha?1 DM was achieved over the period 1995–2012.  相似文献

Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) is a high-yielding perennial biomass crop that is well adapted to the Southeast USA where poultry litter is readily available. This research was conducted to compare biomass production and nutrient utilization of napiergrass fertilized with either poultry litter or inorganic fertilizer. Each spring, approximately 100 kg ha?1 of N, 40 kg ha?1 P, and 90 kg ha?1 K were applied as poultry litter or equivalent inorganic fertilizer. Biomass was harvested each winter after senescence. For the first 2 years, dry matter yield did not differ among treatments, but in the third and fourth years, yields declined in all treatments and were lowest in the unfertilized treatment. Biomass N concentration and N removal were greatest in the inorganic treatment. In general, N removal exceeded the amount applied, suggesting that higher application rates may be necessary to maintain yields. Biomass P concentration and total P uptake were greatest in the litter fertilized treatment, demonstrating that napiergrass can remove some of the excess P from applied litter. Soil cores were taken periodically to assess changes in soil properties. After 2 years of production, soil pH in the surface layer (0–15 cm) was lower in the inorganic treatment than in the other treatments. After 4 years, total soil C had increased by an average of 3,180 kg ha?1 though fertilizer treatments did not differ. Yield declined in all treatments after 4 years and N supplementation is recommended for production in upland fields.  相似文献
