The fatty acid (FA) composition of total lipids isolated from the marine sponge Halichondria panicea inhabiting Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan was studied. GC and GC-MS techniques were used in identification of 63 FAs, with the main attention being paid to FAs with 14–22 carbon atoms. 4,8,12-Trimethyl-13:0 FA was for the first time identified as a main saturated FA, along with the branched FAs br-25:1, br-27:1, and br-27:2. The contents of arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic, docosapentaenoic, and the major demospongic acids [26:3(5,9,19), 26:3(5,9,17), 27:3(5,9,20), and 28:3(5,9,21)] considerably differed from those previously found for H. panicea, which may be due to seasonal changes in the species composition of organisms consumed by the sponge.  相似文献

This study examines the composition of lipids, fatty acids, and fatty aldehydes in two marine bryozoan species, Berenicea meandrina and Dendrobeania flustroides, from the Sea of Okhotsk. The share of neutral lipids was up to 57.3% in D. flustroides and 54.9% in B. meandrina; the share of polar lipids was 33.2 and 40.4%, respectively. In all, 57 fatty acids (FA) and 9 aldehydes were identified in total lipids. The main FAs were 16:0, 18:0, 22:6n-3, and 20:5n-3. The content of branched saturated FA in bryozoans was on the average 6.4%. Three isomers of 16:1 (n-9, n-7, and n-5), five isomers of 18:1 (n-13, n-11, n-9, n-7, and n-5), four isomers of 20:1 (n-13, n-11, n-9, and n-7), as well as 22:1n-9 and 22:1n-13 were found; the presence of 7-methyl-6-hexadienoic acid (on the average, 3.0% of total FAs) was demonstrated. Non-methylene-inter-rupted FAs contributed 8.9 and 1.6% of the total FAs in D. flustroides and B. meandrina, respectively, and were identified as 20:2(5,11), 20:2(7,13), 20:3(5,11,14), 22:2(7,13), and 22:2(7,15). In B. meandrina, minor amounts of 24:0, 24:1, 25:0, 26:0, 24:4n-3, 26:3(5,9,19), and 28:3(5,9,19) were found, suggesting sponge biofouling on some bryozoan colonies. Aldehydes (branched saturated and unsaturated C16–19 homologues) did not exceed 10.3 and 1.9% of the total FAs in D. flustroides and B. meandrina, respectively. The presence of the FA markers that are characteristic of microalgae, protozoans, and detritus in bryozoan lipids agrees well with data on polytrophic feeding of these bryozoans.  相似文献

Fatty acid (FA) composition of the blubber in free-ranging white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) from Svalbard's waters was determined and compared with the fatty acid composition of potential prey species in an attempt to assess diet. This methodology is based on the common assumption that unique arrays of FAs found within groups of organisms are transferred, largely unaltered, up marine food chains and thus may be useful for assessment of diet composition. Complete-column blubber biopsies were sampled from white whales (n=7) during the summers of 1996 and 1997. All captured animals were adult males. FAs were extracted from 2–4 replicates taken from an area about 10 cm in front of the mid-dorsal ridge. FA data from a total of 12 potential prey species from the Svalbard area were compared to the white-whale blubber samples. Twenty-two FAs were consistently found in relative amounts >0.5% of the total FA composition in white whales. These FAs accounted for 94–96% of the total FAs present. The blubber was composed almost entirely of triacylglycerols. The major saturated FAs were 14:0 and 16:0; 16:1(n-7), 18:1(n-9) and 20:1(n-9) were the major monounsaturated FAs and 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3) were the major polyunsaturated FAs. Sixteen of the 22 FAs consistently found in the white-whale blubber were also found in considerable amounts (>0.5% of total FAs) in most of the potential species. Principal Component Analysis run on these 16 FAs suggests that polar cod (Boreogadus saida) had the most similar FA composition to the white-whale blubber, followed by capelin (Mallotus villosus), the copepod Calanus hyperboreus and the shrimp Pandalus borealis. In order to study the biomarker fatty acids of symbionts in the marine sponge Halichondria panicea, purification and structural identification of two new 2-methyl branched monoenoic very long fatty acids (2-Me-24:1 n-7 and 2-Me-26:1 n-9) were performed for the first time. These acids amounted to 7.1% of total sponge FAs, but our attempts to determine their structures by one-step GC-MS analysis were unsuccessful because of low yields of the correspondent N-acyl pyrrolidide derivatives. Silver-ion thin-layer chromatography isolated enriched fractions of monoenoic fatty acids extracted from the sponge. Further purification of unknown fatty acid methyl esters was carried out by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Determination of the chain length, degree and position of unsaturations was achieved by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry on methyl esters and dimethyldisulfide adducts. Structures, position of methyl substitution, and double bonds cis isomery were confirmed by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance.  相似文献

The fatty acid (FA) composition of Demospongiae species from the Sea of Okhotsk was studied. Fifteen sponge species were investigated for the first time, and the previously studied species Desmacella rosea and Myxilla incrustans were reexamined for their FA composition. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed 150 different fatty acids, of which 15 have not been identified in sponge lipids previously. The relative content of saturated FAs varied from 7.6 in Melonachora kobjakovae to 29.6% in Amphilectus digitata, with an average of 14.6% of total FAs. The relative content of monoenic FAs ranged from 12.8 in T. dirhaphis to 27.0% in Polymastia sp., with an average of 20.6% of total FAs. Non-methylen-interrupted, primarily unsaturated Δ5,9-FAs contributed a significantly to the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids of sponges; this being a distinguishing feature of the FA composition of the investigated group of organisms.  相似文献

Ten zooxanthellae-free Dendronephthya species , twelve zooxanthellate soft coral species of the genera Sarcophyton, Lobophytum, Cladiella, Lytophyton, Cespitularia, and Clavularia, and the hermatypic coral Caulastrea tumida were examined for the first time to elucidate the fatty acid (FA) composition of total lipids. In Dendronephthya species, the main FAs were 20:4n-6, 24:5n-6, 16:0, 18:0, 7-Me-16:1n-10, and 24:6n-3 which amounted on the average to 26.0, 12.7, 12.1, 6.0, 4.8, and 4.0% of the total FA contents, respectively. For zooxanthellate soft corals, the main FAs were 16:0 (25.7%), 20:4n-6 (18.2%), 24:5n-6 (6.2%), and 18:4n-3 (5.6%), as well as 16:2n-7, which amounted up to 11.8% in Sarcophyton aff. crassum. Corals with zooxanthellae had low contents of 24:6n-3. The significant difference (p<0.01) between azooxanthellate and zooxanthellate soft corals was indicated only for 12 of 46 FAs determined. The principal components analysis confirmed that 7-Me-16:1n-10, 17:0, 18:4n-3, 18:1n-7, 20:4n-6, 22:5n-6, 24:5n-6, and 24:6n-3 are useful for chemotaxonomy of Dendronephthya. The azooxanthellate soft corals studied were distinguished by the absence of significant depth-dependent and species-specific variations of FA composition, low content of 16:2n-7, an increased proportion of bacterial FAs, predominance of n-6 FAs connected with active preying, and a high ability for biosynthesis of tetracosapolyenoic FAs.  相似文献

The fatty acid (FA) composition has been analysed in the blubber of 56 minke whales caught during the Norwegian commercial whaling period in 2009–2011. Minke whales from four regions were sampled: the North Sea, Vesterålen, Spitsbergen/Bear Island and Finnmark. The FA profiles of the whale blubber have been compared with FA profiles of potential prey species to investigate if FA analysis can be used to predict the diet of minke whales and how the FA profiles of the blubber reflect the regional ecosystem in which the whales were caught. Clear differences in blubber FA profiles were found between minke whales from different areas, and the results of the present study show that FA analysis of the blubber can be used to indicate the whale's diet, but there appears to be a strong impact from metabolism on several FAs. The whale blubber FAs are separate from those of the prey by having relatively high levels of FAs likely to originate from endogenous metabolism, such as 18:1n9 (Δ9-desaturation of 18:0); chain shortening products of 22:1(n-11); 20:1(n-11) and 18:1(n-11); as well as 22:5(n-3), which is an elongation product of 20:5(n-3). High metabolic activity in the adipose tissue was also evident by the clear stratification of FA profiles found throughout the blubber layer. It is remarkable that the whale blubber has much lower levels of the long-chain PUFAs 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3) than found in the prey organisms. It is likely that this results from selective partitioning of diet FAs between the storage lipids and membrane lipids.  相似文献

Phospholipid (PL) and fatty acid (FA) compositions of the plasma membrane (PM), as well as the FA composition of the PM phosphatidylcholine (PtdCho) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PtdEtn) in the pure culture (zero generation) and the first three recycled generations of the bottom-fermenting brewer’s yeast, have been determined. The PL composition differed markedly among the generations; in the zero generation, phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns) was the main PL, accounting for 27% of total PLs, followed by phosphatidic acid and PtdCho. In all recycled generations, the main PL was PtdCho with a marked increase in the first generation compared with the zero (32% and 20%, respectively), followed by PtdIns in the first and second generations. In the FA composition of the PM, 22 FAs were identified, ranging from C10 to C26. The compositions of the PM FAs, as well as those of PtdCho and PtdEtn, were characterised by a high preponderance of C16 acids. Saturated FAs prevailed in the zero generation, whilst unsaturated prevailed in the first and second generation. Although the profiles of FAs in PtdCho and PtdEtn were similar, some marked differences were observed, pointing out to their specific functions in the regulation of membrane properties.  相似文献

1. The value of algal fatty acids (FA) as diet biomarkers for benthic harpacticoid copepods was investigated. A high proportion of 18:1ω9 and 18:2ω6 FA was observed in the lipid reserve fraction of copepods fed with cyanobacteria. In contrast, a high proportion of 16:1ω7 and ω3 FA (including eicosapentaenoic) was present in the lipid reserve fraction of copepods grown on diatoms. 2. Copepods that were grown on cyanobacteria showed reduced survival and took 26% more time to develop from the first copepodid stage to adult than copepods that were grown on diatoms. Copepods feeding on the cyanobacteria showed reduced FA content when compared with animals fed with diatoms. This reduction in FA content was more pronounced in the apolar lipid fraction (mainly reserve lipids) than in the polar (mainly structural) lipid fraction. 3. The FA profiles of algae were used to calculate a function discriminating between diatoms and cyanobacteria. This function was applied to the FA profiles in the reserve lipid fraction of copepods and correctly classified copepod diet. 16:1ω7, 18:2ω6 and 20:5ω3 were the most important FA in the discriminant function. The suitability of this chemometric method to infer copepod diet was further tested by using algal class FA data from literature to derive the discriminant functions. The correct classification of the diet when the functions were applied to FA composition of the copepod reserve lipids suggests that this method may be employed in trophic web studies. 18:3ω3, 18:1ω9 and 16:1ω7 were the most important FA in the functions discriminating diatoms, cyanobacteria and green algae. The identification and quantification of the whole suit of 16:1ω7, 18:1ω9, 18:2ω6, 18:3ω3 and 20:5ω3 in trophic web studies is therefore of paramount importance to infer diet origin of aquatic herbivores. 4. The FA profile of copepod polar lipids did not reflect that of the diet. The presence of long chain polyunsaturated FAs in the polar lipid fraction of copepods feeding on the cyanobacterium suggests that C18 FAs from the diet may be elongated and desaturated by the copepod. The ability to elongate and desaturated FAs may reduce the importance of some FAs as diet biomarkers while it may turn the copepods into valuable trophic intermediaries in transferring organic matter from microorganisms to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

This study assesses the combined effect of feeding and short-term thermal stress on various physiological parameters and on the fatty acid, sterol, and alcohol composition of the scleractinian coral Turbinaria reniformis. The compound-specific carbon isotope composition of the lipids was also measured. Under control conditions (26°C), feeding with Artemia salina significantly increased the symbiont density and chlorophyll content and the growth rates of the corals. It also doubled the concentrations of almost all fatty acid (FA) compounds and increased the n-alcohol and sterol contents. δ13C results showed that the feeding enhancement of FA concentrations occurred either via a direct pathway, for one of the major polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) compounds of the food (18:3n-3 FA), or via an enhancement of photosynthate transfer (indirect pathway), for the other coral FAs. Cholesterol (C27Δ5) was also directly acquired from the food. Thermal stress (31°C) affected corals, but differently according to their feeding status. Chlorophyll, protein content, and maximal photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) decreased to a greater extent in starved corals. In such corals, FA concentrations were reduced by 33%, (especially C16, C18 FAs, and n-3 PUFA) and the sterol content by 27% (especially the C285,22 and C285). The enrichment in the δ13C signature of the storage and structural FAs suggests that they were the main compounds respired during the stress to maintain the coral metabolism. Thermal stress had less effect on the lipid concentrations of fed corals, as only FA levels were reduced by 13%, with no major changes in their isotope carbon signatures. In conclusion, feeding plays an essential role in sustaining T. reniformis metabolism during the thermal stress.  相似文献

Blumeria (=Erysiphe) graminis f.sp. tritici (Bgt), the causal agent of wheat powdery mildew, is responsible for an important disease leading to considerable yield reductions in wheat worldwide. Conidia of the obligate plant pathogen Bgt were analysed for their total fatty acid (FA) composition as a function of their ontogeny. A total of 17 FAs were detected (C(12)-C(24) saturated and unsaturated ones), including the presence of unusual long-chain monoenoic FAs. In young conidia, the major FAs were C(18:2) (23%), C(16:0) (16%), C(18:0) (15.2%) and C(18:1) (14.3%). In old conidia, the main FAs were C(24:1) (20.7%), C(22:0) (15%), C(22:1) (13.5%) and C(24:0) (9.7%). The amount of total FA was about 39 microg.mg of dry weight(-1) in young conidia and decreased clearly to 18 microg.mg of dry weight(-1) in older conidia. For the first time, we have demonstrated that the FA composition of conidia changes greatly with age. Medium-chain FAs (C(12)-C(18)) are predominant in very young conidia (75%), whereas long-chain FAs (C(22)-C(24)) are the major compounds in old conidia (74%). This study showed a significant elongation of FAs and a drastic decrease in the total FA amount during the ontogeny of conidia.  相似文献

Enhancing healthy fatty acids (FAs) in ewe milk fat and suckling lamb tissues is an important objective in terms of improving the nutritional value of these foods for the consumer. The present study examined the effects of feeding-protected lipid supplements rich in unsaturated FAs on the lipid composition of ewe milk, and subsequently in the muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissues of lambs suckling such milk. Thirty-six pregnant Churra ewes with their new-born lambs were assigned to one of three experimental diets (forage/concentrate ratio 50 : 50), each supplemented with either 3% Ca soap FAs of palm (Control), olive (OLI) or fish (FO) oil. The lambs were nourished exclusively by suckling for the whole experimental period. When the lambs reached 11 kg BW, they were slaughtered and samples were taken from the Longissimus dorsi and subcutaneous fat depots. Although milk production was not affected by lipid supplementation, the FO diet decreased fat content (P<0.001), whereas the OLI milk FA profile resembled that of the Control diet. In contrast, although FO drastically diminished the contents of stearic and oleic acids (P<0.001), all the saturated even-numbered carbon FAs from 6:0 to 14:0 increased (P<0.05). FO also produced the highest levels of c9,t11-18:2 (2.21%) and n-3 FAs, 20:5 n-3 (0.58%), 22:5 n-3 (0.48%) and 22:6 n-3 (0.40%). The high levels of trans-11 18:1 (7.10%) obtained from the FO diet would suggest that Ca soaps only confer partial protection in the rumen. In contrast, the lack of significant differences in trans-10 18:1 levels (P>0.05) and other trans-FAs between Control and FO treatments would indicate that FO treatment does not alter rumen biohydrogenation pathways under the assayed conditions. Changes in dam milk FA composition induced differences in the FA profiles of meat and fat depots of lambs, preferentially incorporated polyunsaturated FAs into the muscle rather than storing them in the adipose tissue. In the intramuscular fat of the FO treatment, all the n-3 FAs reached their highest concentrations: 0.97 (18:3 n-3), 2.72 (20:5 n-3), 2.21 (22:5 n-3) and 1.53% (22:6 n-3). In addition, not only did FO intramuscular fat have the most cis-9, trans-11 18:2 (1.66%) and trans-11 18:1 (3.75%), but also the lowest n-6/n-3 ratio (1.80) and saturated FA content were not affected. We examined the nutritional quality of decaying leaf litter in a third-order forested stream, using measurements of fatty acid (FA) composition over time. We measured changes in concentrations of total, polyunsaturated, microalgal, and microbial marker FAs in mixed-species leaf packs in spring and autumn and effects of including/excluding macroinvertebrates. Initial concentrations of total FAs in litter were significantly less in spring (5.2 mg/g) than in autumn (6.9 mg/g; F = 6.3; P = 0.03), but total FA concentrations in litter placed in the stream declined significantly over 120 days in both spring (62%; F = 10.9; P < 0.001) and autumn (56%; F = 19.4; P = 0.0001). Quantities of most FAs declined at a greater rate than that of bulk leaf matter. The presence or absence of macroinvertebrates (5 mm vs. 250 μm mesh) had no effect on FA concentration or composition of decomposing litter. Omega-3 polyunsaturated FAs were either nearly absent (20:5ω3) or depleted preferentially over other FAs (18:3ω3). During decomposition the polyunsaturated FA linoleic acid (18:2ω6, common in fungi), declined in concentration more rapidly than other FAs in the spring, but in autumn declined at slower rates, perhaps suggesting greater fungal activity in autumn. Quantities of bacterial (e.g., 16:1ω7) and fungal (e.g., 18:1ω9) FA markers increased over time in autumn (and 16:1ω7 also in spring). Our data provide no evidence for increasing nutritional FA quality of litter during decay and microbial colonization, based on total and polyunsaturated FAs, despite measured increases in bacterial and fungal FA over time. Routine measurements of FA composition of litter could provide insights into the nutrition of allochthonous matter and the importance of fungi and bacteria during decomposition.  相似文献

The objectives of the present work were to investigate the temporal variation in the fatty acid (FA) composition of the octocoral Veretillum cynomorium, examine the effects of reproduction and environmental factors on FA variation, and establish a chemotaxonomic identification for this species. Mean oocyte size-frequency distributions showed that the majority of the oocytes had an intermediate size (Group II) before spawning (April and June). The late-vitellogenic oocytes (Group III) became absent in August and October and, during this post-spawning period, oocytes were primarily of small size (Group I). Most of the major FA, 16:0, 18:0, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3, and the tetracosapolyenoic fatty acid (TPA), 24:6n-3, varied significantly throughout the year (p < 0.01), with two peaks in August/October and February. The boost in early oogenesis, also associated with warmer temperatures, seemed to be responsible for the observed increase in FA content between June and August. The highest values of FA content were observed in February when intermediate oogenesis (Group II) was at its peak and there were considerable levels of available food in the environment. Also, the increase in food availability seemed to trigger the final stages of gametogenesis. The high quantity of 18:1n-7, odd-numbered and branched FAs, suggested the presence of a dynamic bacterial community in V. cynomorium, probably as an adaptive response to the lack of symbiotic microalgae. Although the presence of TPAs is the main feature distinguishing octocorals from other coral species, here we showed that there was no single FA clearly dominating the FA composition of V. cynomorium throughout the year. Instead, four main FAs share similar concentrations: 16:0, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 24:6n-3. The predominance of these four FAs combined with the higher amount of 24:6n-3 when compared to 24:5n-6 may serve as a chemotaxonomic feature to distinguish this octocoral species (or genus).  相似文献

The composition of fatty acids (FAs) of symbiotic dinoflagellates isolated from the hermatypic coral Echinoporal lamellosa adapted to the irradiance of 95, 30, 8, and 2% PAR was studied. Polar lipids and triacylglycerols (TAG) differed between them in FA composition. Polar lipids were enriched in unsaturated FAs, whereas TAG, in saturated FAs. Light exerted a substantial influence on the FA composition in both polar lipids and TAG. The elevation of irradiance resulted in the accumulation of 16:0 acid in both lipid groups and 16:1(n-7) acid in TAG. It seems likely that de novo synthesis of 16:0 acid occurred actively in the cells of symbiotic dinoflagellates in high light. Since these processes are energy-consuming ones, they utilize excessive energy. When light intensity declined, 18:4(n-3) and 20:5(n-3) acids accumulated in polar lipids, which was accompanied by the increase in the content of chlorophyll a in the cells of zooxanthellae, whereas the levels of 22:6(n-3) and 20:4(n-6) acids reduced. Although the relative content of particular FAs varied substantially in dependence of irradiance, the balance between the sum of saturated and unsaturated FAs changed insignificantly. We concluded that the role of photoadaptation could not be limited only to changes in the degree of lipid unsaturation and membrane fluidity. It is supposed that light-induced changes in the FA composition reflect the interrelation between photosynthesis and FA biosynthesis.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to examine the effect of different levels of grazing on muscle nutritional fatty acid (FA) profile, including the beneficial n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and cis-9, trans-11 (cis-9, trans-11) 18:2 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Thirty male Galician Blond (GB) breed calves were randomly assigned to the following three grazing treatments: (1) continuous pasture grazing for 250 days (P); (2) 197-day grazing followed by a 50-day short period of concentrate-based finishing (PC) and (3) 57-day grazing followed by a 165-day long period of concentrate-based finishing (C). Calves kept sucking their mothers up to the time of slaughter. The slaughter weight was similar for all treatments (about 330 kg). Samples of the longissimus thoracis muscle were used for assessment of chemical composition by near infrared reflectance spectroscopy and FA profiles by gas chromatography. Muscle from C calves was fatter and had higher content in total FA, monounsaturated FA (MUFA), cis-9 18:1 than muscle from P calves, whereas PC muscle had generally intermediate values. No significant treatment difference for total saturated FAs (SFA) was found. Content of potentially beneficial n-3 PUFA (18:3n-3, 20:3n-3, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3), cis-9, trans-11 CLA and n-6:n-3 ratio were lower and PUFA : SFA ratio were higher in P than in both C and PC calves. Calves fed exclusively on pasture synthesised higher amounts of beneficial FA than calves finished on concentrate. A 50-day period of concentrate-based finishing was sufficient to offset the synthesis of beneficial FA from pasture grazing.  相似文献

Few studies have been conducted on the temporal dynamics of both amino acid (AA) and fatty acid (FA) profiles in marine bivalves. We investigated the seasonal variation of these compounds in the pod razor clam Ensis siliqua in relation to food availability, salinity, water temperature and reproductive cycle. AA content varied between 46.94 and 54.67 % dry weight (DW), and the AAs found in greater quantity were glutamic acid, glycine and aspartic acid. FA content varied between 34.02 and 87.94 mg g?1 DW and the FAs found in greater quantity were 16:0 and 22:6n-3. Seasonal trends were observed for AAs and FAs. FAs increased with gametogenesis and decreased with spawning while AA content increased throughout spawning. The effect of increasing temperature and high food availability during the spawning season masked the loss of AAs resulting from gamete release. Still, a comparatively greater increase in the contents of glutamic acid and leucine with spawning indicate their possible involvement in a post-spawning gonad recovery mechanism. A post-spawning decrease in 14:0, 16:0, 16:1n-7, 18:1n-7 and 18:1n-9 is indicative of the importance of these FAs in bivalve eggs. An increase in 18:3n-3, 18:4n-3, 20:1n-9 and 20:2n-6 during gametogenesis suggests their involvement in oocyte maturation. The FA 22:4n-6, while increasing with spawning, appears to play a role in post-spawning gonad recovery. Salinity did not have an effect on the AA composition. None of the environmental parameters measured had an effect on FA composition.  相似文献

Lipids, particularly fatty acids (FAs), are major sources of energy and nutrients in aquatic ecosystems and play key roles during vertebrate development. The European eel Anguilla anguilla goes through major biochemical and physiological changes throughout its lifecycle as it inhabits sea- (SW), and/or brackish- (BW) and/or freshwater (FW) habitats. With the ultimate goal being to understand the reasons for eels adopting a certain life history strategy (FW or SW residency vs. ‘habitat shifting’), we explored differences in lipid content and FA composition of muscle, liver and eyes from eels collected across Norwegian SW, BW and FW habitats, and at different lifecycle stages (yellow to silver). FW and SW eels had a higher lipid content overall compared to BW eels, reflecting differences in food availability and life history strategies. SW eels had higher proportions of certain monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs; 18:1n-9, 20:1n-9), and of the essential polyunsaturated FAs 20:5n-3 (eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA) and 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid) than FW eels, reflecting a marine-based diet. In contrast, the muscle of FW eels had higher proportions of 18:3n-3, 18:2n-6 and 20:4n-6 (arachidonic acid), as is typical of FW organisms. MUFA proportions increased in later stage eels, consistent with the hypothesis that the eels accumulate energy stores prior to migration. In addition, the decrease of EPA with advancing stage may be associated with the critical role that this FA plays in eel sexual development. Lipid and FA information provided further understanding of the habitat use and overall ecology of this critically endangered species.  相似文献

Adductor muscle fatty acid (FA) composition was compared in Pecten maximus juveniles originating from five locations along the Norwegian coast from 59°N to 65°N to detect possible population differences. Broodstock sized scallops were translocated to sea conditions by a scallop hatchery near Bergen (60°N) before spawning in February 2006. The scallop larvae and juveniles were reared in the same environment for two years and 10 individuals from each population were sampled in May 2007 and in May 2008 for analysis of the FAs in the adductor muscle. The total lipid content determined as total amount of FAs were 5.7 ± 0.3 mg per g tissue, and no significant difference was found among the five populations. The polyunsaturated FAs made up close to 60% of the total, with 20:5n3 and 22:6n3 dominating. The saturated FA content was approximately 30%, while the monounsaturated FA were less abundant (7–10%). The FA composition of the muscles of the five populations was similar within each year, with larger differences between the years. Multivariate, supervised learning method PLS, applied pairwise, showed distinct FA composition, between the scallops from the five locations, indicating population differences. The relatedness between the populations was different in the two years, but the distinct FA profiles of the adductor muscle could be used to distinguish between scallop populations on a local scale. The results indicate habitat-specific lipid metabolism which may have important implications for the scallop aquaculture industry in the context of producing well adapted individuals for the specific locations.  相似文献

Information on lipids in forages is scarce, and effects of nitrogen (N) application level and regrowth period on the fatty acid (FA) concentration and composition of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were studied. N was applied at 0, 45 and 100 kg ha?1, and swards were cut after various regrowth periods, resulting in six treatments designed as randomised blocks with three replicates. The stages of development ranged from vegetative to elongating swards, with herbage yield levels from 1.9 to 4.2 t dry matter (DM) ha?1. Concentrations of individual FA were determined by gas chromatography, and canopy characteristics and herbage quality were assessed. The treatments resulted in canopies with contrasting DM yields and protein concentrations. Five FAs, representing 98% of total FAs, were studied in detail. On an average, the concentration of these major FAs in fresh grass was 15.1 g kg?1 DM, and 69% of the major FAs consisted of C18:3. Regrowth period affected (P < 0.05) the total FA concentration, and significantly (P < 0.01) lower concentrations of C18:3 and C16:1 were found after a longer period of regrowth. N application resulted in higher (P < 0.001) concentrations of all FAs. The FA composition was not affected by N application, but a longer regrowth period significantly (P < 0.001) decreased the proportion of C18:3 and increased those of C18:2 and C16:0. A strong, positive overall linear relation was found between the concentrations of total FAs and C18:3 with the crude protein concentration in the herbage. These studies demonstrate opportunities to affect the FA concentration and composition of FA in herbage through management strategies, which could affect milk FA composition.  相似文献
