1. Patterns of dispersion in a chironomid community on the submersed macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum were analysed. 2. Random dispersion commonly occurred throughout the year, with an average of 40% of all species being observed with random spatial patterns. The frequency of occasions with random dispersion varied among chironomid species, ranging from 3.3% in Rheotanytarsus curtistylus to 56% in Thienemanniella majuscula. 3. Estimates of the negative binomial parameter k show that 26% of all cases demonstrate strong aggregation (0 < k < 1.0) while nearly half (47%) have quasi-random dispersion. Interspecific variation in k was not significant statistically when all the species were considered together, although a pairwise comparison between two abundant species Tvetenia calvescens and Rheotanytarsus curtistylus demonstrated a marginally significant difference. When different instars were compared, the percentage frequency of strong aggregation (0 < k < 1.0) declined from first instars (49%) to later instars (II-38%, III-24% and IV-27%). 4. Variance/mean and m*—m regressions (m* is Lloyd's mean crowding statistic and m is the sample mean) both fitted the data well, but there was little indication of significant interspecific variation in parameter values, particularly the slope of regression. 5. Dispersion patterns were examined along with the analysis of spatial overlap in this community. Forty-two per cent of species-pairs with reduced spatial overlap (spatially ‘segregated’ pairs) contained one or both species with random dispersion, while the corresponding value for spatially unsegregated pairs was 57%. This suggests that spatial segregation is not necessarily caused by strong, independent aggregation of both species. Comparing spatially segregated vs. unsegregated pairs, the former tend to have one species with a stronger tendency of aggregation than species of the latter. 6. Patterns of dispersion observed were considered in the light of ‘random patch formation’. Random patch formation emphasizes the stochasticity of patch-forming processes as well as the stochastically dynamic nature of resultant patches. Unlike terrestrial drosophilid assemblages, where strong aggregation is a predominant pattern, this chironomid community demonstrates widely varying degrees of dispersion with high occurrence of randomness, reflecting the stochasticity of dispersal and recolonization processes. It is suggested that, in terms of species coexistence, more emphasis should be placed on stochasticity rather than on aggregation in this type of community.  相似文献

  • 1 The larval chironomid community of the sediment surface and the hyporheic inters titial was investigated in two longitudinal transects of an alpine gravel stream between September 1984 and August 1985. Eighty larval species and species groups were identified, most of which belonged to the subfamily Orthocladiinae. Of all larval individuals 51.1% inhabited the first 10cm of the bed sediments, and 93.2% occurred between the surface and 40cm depth.
  • 2 The spatial species turnover showed marked variations between horizontally adjacent sampling sites in each of the four sediment depth layers. In both transects the species composition showed a significantly lower turnover in the upper 10cm of the bed sediments than in the deeper layers.
  • 3 Spatial community stability showed an oscillating pattern between all sampling sites due to density shifts of larvae between depth layers. Temporal differences in resilience (local stability) were significantly and positively related to changes in the cumulative discharge pattern in the gravel brook, thus indicating the apparent ability of the community to recover quickly following disturbances.
  • 4 The five abundant species, Corynoneura lobata, Synorthocladius semivirens, Tvetenia calvescens, Micropsectra atrofasciata and Rheotanytarsus nigricauda, exhibited significant differences in their sediment depth distribution, with density maxima shifting between depth layers. Spatial autocorrelations suggest that these larvae form patches between neighbouring sampling sites with varying sizes and inter-patch distances in each of four sediment layers. A simulation test, in which individuals of each species were randomly permuted between microhabitats of each depth layer separately, indicated that the patches might have arisen by chance.
  • 5 To evaluate the significance of observed spatial resource overlap values amongst these five chironomid species, neutral models were developed based on 300 randomizations of each possible species pair-wise association of individuals and patches of species. The spatial organization of a larval chironomid assemblage in the stream Oberer Seebach seemed to be governed by coexistence due to random patch formation and dispersal patterns within the interstitial habitats, which reduce the probability of strong competitive interactions.

The distribution and production of larval chironomids in Tjeukemeer, a shallow, moderately large and wind exposed lake, were estimated between 1969 and 1972. The following seven species together contributed more than 95% of all the individuals collected: Chironomus anthracinus, Chironomus plumosus, Cladotanytarsus mancus, Glyptotendipes pallens, Polypedilum nubeculosum, Polypedilum scalaenum and Stictochironomus histrio. Density and biomass distribution depended generally on the substrate type and its stability. The standing crop biomass was highest in the reed-beds and in a narrow 100 m wide inshore zone and low in the large offshore zone. Wind induced wave action, causing substrate instability, is likely to be the main factor responsible for these low standing crops. The mean annual larval production in the lake was: 1969, 1.8; 1970, 0.4; 1971, 1.7 and 1972, 3.7 g dry wt m–2.  相似文献

1. Three predatory chironomid species constituted numerically 8.8% (± 95% CL 2.2) of the macro- and meiobenthic community at the sediment surface and in the hyporheic zone of Oberer Seebach, a gravel stream in Lower Austria. Larvae of Thienemannimyia geijskesi (Goetghebuer) and Nilotanypus dubius (Meigen) occurred in higher densities in sediment depths between 10 and 40 cm, whereas Conchapelopia pallidula (Meigen) achieved higher densities at the sediment surface. The three species completed one generation in a year. 2. A total of ninety-seven prey species and instars were identified by gut analyses, of which forty-one benthic rotifer species constituted 69.5% of individuals and twenty-three chironomid species and their instars, 22.9%. The three tanypod species showed shifts from mainly rotifer species in early instars to chironomids and diverse other meio- and macrofaunal taxa in later instars. Rather than shifting towards larger prey sizes, growing predators expanded their upper size thresholds and continued to include smaller prey species in their diet. The extent to which tanypod instars fed on similar prey size classes declined with increasing larval size. Predation by tanypods amounted to 2.2% (± 95% CL 0.1) of the combined prey densities and prey consumption averaged 1.32 (bootstrap 95% CL 1.26–1.39) individuals per predator individual. 3. Preferences for microhabitat flow differed between predator species and in the prey assemblage. Prey densities and densities of T. geijskesi and C. pallidula were highest in pool areas, whereas N. dubius achieved high densities in riffle sites. 4. Tanypod larvae fed non-selectively among prey types. To test the significance of observed size(instar)-specific spatial and dietary overlap values amongst tanypod species, simulations were generated from random models for pairs of intra- and interspecific associations of individuals and groups of prey and predator species. Groups and individuals of tanypod instars fed near randomly on groups of prey types and a high proportion (P > 0.60) of prey individuals are quasi-randomly chosen by tanypods in those patches. Tanypod instar-pairs did not show a sustained trophic resource partitioning in time, thus reducing the degree of competitive interactions for food in this predator guild. Spatially segregated and non-segregated tanypod instars formed random aggregations independent of each other at different flow microhabitats. 5. Species-rich prey assemblages such as benthic rotifers and larval chironomids increased the probability of non-selective feeding upon a wide spectrum of prey species by tanypods. Prey choice was governed by prey availability and tanypod individuals fed on many species at rather even proportions independent of each other.  相似文献

1. The larval chironomid community was studied quantitatively in three cross-sections of an impounded area of the River Danube between July 1985 and July 1986. 2. Sixty-six species were identified, most of which belonged to the subfamily Orthocladiinae, but species of the tribe Chironomini were numerically dominant. 3. The sections differed distinctly in terms of species number and diversity; a tendency towards increasing species richness and diversity was observed in the upstream sections of the impoundment. Marked fluctuations in these two parameters characterized the area close to the dam; the temporal oscillations in diversity values differed significantly between the sections (ANOVA: P<0.05). 4. Clear differences were found between sampling sites in terms of community resilience, the minimum eigenvalue of the community matrix defined as the rate of return of a disturbed system. Longer return times after ‘disturbances’ could be expected at sites further upstream from the dam. 5. Temporal persistence of species composition was estimated for each section with Kendal's correlation coefficient from 1985 to 1986. Sites further upstream of the dam illustrated a significantly greater temporal species persistence over time and a smaller degree of fluctuation, compared to the dam area (ANOVA: P<0.05). A significant negative relationship was found between overall persistence and cumulative monthly water discharge, at the dam site (P<0.01). 6. Classification of the larval chironomid community gave evidence of generally low spatio-temporal overlap between species in the impoundment area.  相似文献

In the past 20 years, fauna and ecology of horse flies (Tabanidae) were intensively studied in Croatia, especially in the Ramsar sites as wetlands of international importance. Different habitat requirements of larvae were recognised and adults of 78 species in 10 genera were recorded. The true aquatic and semiaquatic larvae are represented by several species of the genera Chrysops Meigen, 1803 Hybomitra Enderlein, 1922. Some species from this ecological group are typical inhabitants of saline biotopes. In the Croatian fauna three halophilous species were recorded: Chrysops italicus Meigen, 1804, Hybomitra acuminata (Loew, 1858) and H. expollicata (Pandellé, 1883). The distribution of these species in Croatia covers 7, 17 and 3 UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) grids, respectively. Specimens were primarily collected in habitats with brackish water along the Adriatic coast, such as Vransko Lake, the mouth of the River Cetina, the delta of the River Neretva and Mljet Island. Only specimens of H. acuminata were recorded in the continental part of Croatia. They were sporadically collected on localities along the Danube floodplain and on four localities near the river Drava. The distribution of H. acuminata in the continental part indicates otherwise rare saline habitats along the Drava and Danube rivers (1.38% of the total catch of the Hybomitra – species from the floodplain).  相似文献

The sleeping chironomid (Polypedilum vanderplanki Hinton) lives on temporary rock pools in the semi‐arid tropical regions of Africa. Its larvae are able to survive the dry season in a completely desiccated ametabolic state known as anhydrobiosis. So far, P. vanderplanki was the only species among all insects showing demonstrated anhydrobiotic ability. Here, we show that a new related species originating from Malawi, Polypedilum pembai sp.n. , is also anhydrobiotic and that its desiccation tolerance mechanism is probably similar to what is observed in P. vanderplanki. The new species, P. pembai sp.n. , is described with special attention to the common and different morphological features, compared with P. vanderplanki. Phylogenetic analysis showed that both species are closely related, suggesting that anhydrobiosis evolved only once in their common ancestor about 49 Ma somewhere in Africa, before the divergence of two species, one in the sub‐Saharan area and another in southeastern Africa.  相似文献

The relative importance of natural and anthropogenic factors, especially topographic type, riparian canopy, altitude, temperature and bank protection, on larval chironomid assemblage was investigated in a Japanese basin. To focus on the macro-scale factors, a concrete block, as an artificial substrate, was used for chironomid collection so that sampling regime may be identical among the sites. Partial CCA using sampling month as a covariable revealed that topographic type, riparian canopy coverage, water temperature and altitude were the main factors influencing species distribution. Stempellinella tamaseptima, Polypedilum tamanigrum and five Rheotanytarsus species showed positive, whereas five Cricotopus species showed negative associations with canopy coverage. Some traditional longitudinal zonations of species were still shown. Chironomus flaviplumus and Chironomus yoshimatsui were merely associated with lower reaches. Stepwise multiple regressions of the assemblage indices on the environmental variables were applied. Bank protection and depth showed negative correlations with Shannon diversity H′. Both topographic type and depth showed negative correlations with Pielou equitability J. Topographic type (lower reach) and specific conductance showed positive, while bank protection showed a negative correlation with abundance. Species richness was not explained by any variables. As a whole, topographic type was the most directly related factor to chironomid assemblages.  相似文献

Abstract  Xylochironomus kakadu , a new genus and species of wood-mining chironomid, is described from northern Australia. Formerly known by a code 'unknown genus K1', the larvae mine soft immersed timber in tropical Australia. The basal striae on the larval mandible are observed otherwise only in Chironomus Meigen and likely close relatives currently placed in Einfeldia Kieffer. The adult male could key as a tanytarsine, and all stages superficially resemble Polypedilum Kieffer, except for the bare squama and the non-tapered male tergite VIII, and the dorsal larval head sclerites. However, analyses of a morphological data matrix derived from all life history stages support no such relationships. Instead, a relationship to Paralauterborniella Lenz and Apedilum Townes, and at one remove, to Fissimentum Cranston & Nolte and Imparipecten Kieffer is postulated. Larval wood-mining among the early branching Chironomini is evidently frequent, but taxa appear not to form a monophyletic clade.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Investment in silken tubes may give tubicolous chironomid larvae more to lose than non‐tube building taxa when physical disturbances or the actions of other organisms induce dispersal. In this study, two chironomid species from flood‐prone Australian tropical streams were subjected to repeated experimental destruction of their larval and pupal tubes in laboratory experiments, with life‐history parameter responses recorded. 2. When subjected to the tube destruction treatments, Echinocladius martini (Orthocladiinae), whose larvae construct branched loose silken tubes in fast flow, showed no reduction in survivorship to adult, whereas Polypedilum australotropicus (Chironominae), which builds compact tightly woven tubes incorporating detrital material within pool leaf packs, showed reduced survivorship of about 25%. 3. For both species, tube destruction reduced pupal duration, regardless of whether destruction occurred in the larval stage only, or in both the larval and pupal stages. This may be a response to the risks of exposure outside tubes in nature, particularly for pupae, which are incapable of spinning silk. 4. Tube destruction caused little or no reduction in adult size, longevity, or female fecundity (oocyte number) for either species, but oocyte development and size was retarded in E. martini females, reflecting the energetic and nutritive costs of the tube destruction treatments. 5. Contrasts in the responses of the two species reflect differences in tube‐building behaviour and in situ habitat use. These results demonstrate that tube loss can affect the fitness of individual chironomids, though both species proved generally resilient, which may reflect their long‐term exposure to variable tropical lotic conditions.  相似文献

Intra- and interspecific niche overlap for two mayfly species with similar life cycle timing, Rhithrogena semicolorata and Ecdyonurus sp. gr. venosus, were investigated. The nymphs were classified into 5 classes according to size and spatial overlaps are measured along a substratum roughness gradient. Substratum roughness selection was investigated by defining utilisation curves, optimum and tolerance values of the nymphs in relation to larval growth. Differences between species and size classes within each species were observed. Ecdyonurus sp. gr. venosus dominated on rough substrates, whereas R. semicolorata was most abundant on smooth substrates. An intermediate value of total interspecific substratum roughness overlap (0.49) was found. Higher intraspecific than interspecific overlap values suggested a spatial niche segregation between the two species. The results suggested that the spatial niches measured, were closer to the `fundamental niches' than could be expected if competition was acting on the two studied populations.  相似文献

Spatial heterogeneity of benthic communities has clear implications for estimating lake production, biodiversity as well as identifying representative sites for palaeolimnological studies. This study investigates chironomid variability and the controlling factors (i.e., environmental and spatial variables) in surface sediments from Taihu Lake (2,338 km2), a hypertrophic lake in the Yangtze delta in eastern China. The spatial distribution of chironomids shows distinct heterogeneity. Microchironomus tabarui-type and Tanypus dominate the midge communities around the estuaries, while Cricotopus sylvestris-type and Polypedilum nubifer-type are the predominant taxa in the East Bays and the East Taihu Lake. Redundancy analysis was used for exploring the relationships between chironomid variability and environmental and spatial stressors. Four variables were identified as significant factors that influence chironomid community structures. The high nutrient concentrations around the estuarial areas favor the development of nutrient-tolerant taxa. Water depth-related oxygen depletion in the open lake during algae blooms prohibits the survival of many organisms, except for a few hypoxic-resistant species. High transparency in the East Bays and the East Taihu Lake indirectly creates a favorite microhabitat for macrophyte-associated chironomid species through aquatic plants. Space per se is a significant forcing factor for organism community and distribution at scales of >1,000 km2. It might be important to consider spatial variables more explicitly in future studies of chironomids in large lakes where multiple stressors make the interactions within the ecosystem more complicated. This study aims to illustrate the ecological characteristics of specific chironomid taxa related to a “microecosystem” which is contributed by the multiple environmental gradients within a large lake, and to provide empirical support for interpretation of palaeochironomid data.  相似文献

Due to changes of discharge regime downstream of a dam reservoir, an alluvial natural stretch of the Warta River changed to a macrophyte‐dominated ecosystem. Large patches of submersed, aquatic macrophytes appeared in summer and their effect is analysed in this study. These patches contained enriched macroinvertebrate assemblages (epiphyton and benthos) and they were refuge for both zooplankton and young fishes released from the reservoir. Despite these altered conditions in this stretch, roach Rutilus rutilus, perch Perca fluviatilis and ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua dominated, as they did in the natural backwater. Fishes were sampled every 2 weeks from June to August, together with their food resources to assess the partitioning of the diet among small individuals of the three species in both stretches (the natural and affected ones). The aim of the analysis was to answer how animal food associated with water plants was partitioned between the species. In both stretches, G. cernua were primarily benthivorous, but epiphytic fauna, zooplankton and large‐sized benthic chironomid larvae replaced lack of many large, benthic insects in the tailwater. Levins' food breath index decreased from 0·36 in the backwater to 0·29 in the tailwater. An opposite trend was observed for P. fluviatilis occurring among macrophytes. Perca fluviatilis were competitors of R. rutilus and took food not only in or on the river bed, but also in the water column. They ate zooplankton and epiphytic fauna and Levins' index increased from 0·32 to 0·44 in the tailwater. Rutilus rutilus fed on adult insects, algae and plant fragments in the natural stretch. In the tailwater, these food types were chiefly complemented by zooplankton. Despite this, the niche breadth of R. rutilus was similar at the two sites. Abundance of food associated with the macrophytes appeared to facilitate cohabitation in the abundant fish populations, but P. fluviatilis appeared to benefit the most in the altered river stretch.  相似文献

Results of the first long-term investigation of the profundal chironomid fauna of Starnberger See, a prealpine lake are reported. Data are presented on the qualitative and quantitative composition of the chironomid fauna in the profundal of Starnberger See, on the spatial variation, and on the phenology of the dominant species, based on pupal occurrence and the seasonal distribution of larval instars. Twenty-five distinct chironomid taxa could be recorded in the profundal zone. Typical inhabitants of the profundal zone of Starnberger See are the larvae of the genus Micropsectra. The maximum abundance of Micropsectra larvae were found at 60 m with 5644 Ind.m−2. Abundance, distribution and phenology of the dominant chironomid species are discussed in comparison with other lakes.  相似文献

Preliminary observations on chironomid assemblages in 9 temporary pools of the National Park of Circeo (Central Italy) are reported. A total of 15 genera or species groups (6 Orthocladiinae, 3 Tanypodinae, 1 Tanytarsini and 5 Chironomini) were recorded during March and April, 1986.Psectrotanypus varius, Polypedilum nubeculosum gr.,Chironomus thummi gr. andC. plumosus gr. were the most abundant and frequent taxa in the nine pools. Almost all chironomids collected are eurytopic and widely distributed in Europe, including Italian waters. Only the finding ofGymnometriocnemus is reported in this paper as a new record for Central Italy. Similarity among pools and among taxa (coefficient of Jaccard) shows a major occurrence of aquatic Orthocladiinae in smaller pools and of Chironomini in larger pools. This relationship between chironomid assemblages and pool sizes can be partly related to the duration of the wet phase which affects chironomid species according to their survival strategies.  相似文献

Harpellales (Zygomycota: Trichomycetes) fungi are cosmopolitan obligate inhabitants of the gut of immature insects. A biweekly survey of gut fungi associated with chironomid (Chironomidae: Diptera) larvae living in the impounded water from Eryngium cabrerae (Apiaceae) phytotelmata from Punta Lara forest, Argentina, was done Jan 2003-Dec 2004. Two species of Harpellales were associated with chironomid larvae, Smittium phytotelmatum in the hindgut of Polypedilum sp. and Stachylina lentica in the midgut of both Polypedilum sp. and Metriocnemus eryngiotelmatus. No statistically significant differences were recorded in the prevalence of these Harpellales between seasons. Environmental variables (temperature, rainfall and relative humidity), impounded water volume, pH and chironomid larval density did not have an effect on the prevalence of the Trichomycetes.  相似文献

Relationships between changes of two species of terrestrial chironomids(Smittia cf. aterrima andBryophaenocladius cf. virgo) and changes of vegetation cover during succession were studied with respect to plant — chironomid interaction in particular stages of chironomid life cycle. Several vegetation types forming vegetation mosaics in suburban fallow were distinguished according to their spatial architecture (height; density etc.). Abundance of chironomid larvae in particular type of vegetation and an area covered by these vegetation types were studied for three years. During one year the effect of vegetation types on density of aerial drift, oviposition habitat preference and adult emergence was studied in detail. Aerial drift was studied using pan traps, oviposition using soil sampling and adult emergence using emergence trap. Main results were similar for both species. Chironomid larvae were abundant in soil in initial years of succession. They were concentrated in patches with open and low height vegetation. Later their abundance decreased corresponding to a reduction of open and low vegetation areas. Greater density of aerial drift and oviposition preference was observed in areas of open and low vegetation. The success of larval development agreed with oviposition preference for winter larval generation only. The less preferred habitats seemed to be more suitable for summer generation. The results indicated that successional changes of terrestrial chironomids can be explained by the effect of vegetation cover on oviposition habitat preference.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to use the data on the distribution of aquatic macroinvertebrates obtained from 14 sites within a 413 km long stretch of the Danube River in Serbia to show the relevance of the bordering zone between the Middle and Lower Danube. A total of 68 macroinvertebrate taxa were observed. Molluscs were the major component with regard to species richness and relative abundance. Lithoglyphus naticoides (C. Pfeiffer, 1828) was the most abundant species and Unio tumidus (Retzius, 1788) was the most frequent species. Product-moment correlation coefficients or Pearson r coefficient was used to analyse the relation between the sites based on macroinvertebrate distribution. The data obtained by product-moment correlation served as input for cluster analyses. According to a cluster analyses Danube River in Serbia could be separated in the free-flowing sector, the stretch with a backwater effect and the area of the Iron Gate.  相似文献

1. Oxygen uptake and denitrification were determined in two bioturbated sediments from a eutrophic lake in southern Sweden. In laboratory mesocosms, an organic profundal sediment was incubated with Chironomus plumosus L. and a sandy littoral sediment with an organic-rich top layer was incubated with Polypedilum sp. Both species of chironomid are sediment tube-dwelling. 2. Oxygen consumption, expressed per gram of larval dry weight, was enhanced to the same extent by the larvae in both sediments. Measurements of the respiration rate of individual larvae revealed that the respiration per gram dry weight of the smaller Polypedilum sp. was more than three times higher than that of C. plumosus. 3. Denitrification was measured using the ‘nitrogen isotope pairing’ technique. In the organic sediment, denitrification of nitrate from the water phase (dw) and denitrification of nitrate from coupled nitrification (dn) were each correlated with the biomass of C. plumosus. In the sandy sediment, dw was correlated with the biomass of Polypedilum sp., while dn did not show any correlation with Polypedilum sp. 4. Oxygen uptake in the organic sediment was increased by a factor of 2.5, dw 5-fold and dn 2.5-fold at a biomass of 10 g m–2 dry weight of C. plumosus. The same biomass of Polypedilum sp. in the sandy sediment resulted in a 2-fold stimulation of oxygen uptake and a 3-fold stimulation of dw, while dn was not affected. These differences in stimulation between oxygen uptake and denitrification by the larvae in the sediments suggest that the stimulation pattern cannot be explained by simple extension of the sediment surface. The burrows evidently reduce the distance between the nitrate source in the water column and the denitrifiers in the anoxic zones. 5. This study indicates that bioturbation by macrofauna elements can have a great impact on denitrification in lake sediments, and that different organisms can influence nitrogen turnover in specific ways.  相似文献
