Skeletal evidence exists for life stresses of 120 Black individuals from 25 sites in Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Periods for statistical comparison are eighteenth century, 1690-1770; Catoctin Furnace, Maryland industrial slaves, 1790-ca.1820; 1800-ca.1860, nineteenth century; and a twentieth-century Black sample compiled from forensic (accidental deaths) cases. From these archaeological sources, skeletal age at death shifts from 36 years, female, and 30 years, male in eighteenth century (N = 29) to 34.8, female, and 36.3, male in nineteenth century (N = 56). Catoctin Furnace slaves' longevity may reflect special conditions for skilled males (34.6 years, female; 41.2 years, male (N = 16). Nutritional stresses are indicated by dental lesions, hypoplasias, stature, and skull base height and pelvic brim index. Occupational stress occurs in some adolescents and in many adults as exaggerated development of lifting muscles (deltoid and pectoral crests) and early vertebral and shoulder breakdown. Lead content of bone may reflect site of occupation. The most common pathology is anemia or sicklemia; parietal depressions and ulna fractures ("parry") indicate violence-related trauma.  相似文献

Serum samples were collected weekly for 3 yr from two female African elephants, for 18 mo from two other female African elephants, and for 2 yr from two female Asian elephants. Animals were not sedated at the time of blood collection. Ovarian cycles, characterized by changes in progesterone and immunoreactive luteinizing hormone (ILH) concentrations, averaged 15.9 +/- 0.6 wk (N = 25) for African females and 14.7 +/- 0.5 wk for Asian females (N = 10). The length of the active luteal phase averaged 10.0 +/- 0.3 wk for African elephants (range 8-14 wk) and 10.6 +/- 0.6 wk for Asian females (range 9-13 wk). Interluteal phases were 5.9 +/- 0.6 wk for African females and 4.2 +/- 0.5 wk for Asian females. One African female (Maliaca) had two extended interluteal phases, both occurring between the months of February and May. Excluding these two periods, there were no differences in the length of the ovarian cycle or the length of the luteal phase between species of elephant. Serum progesterone in both species ranged from less than 50 pg/ml to 933 pg/ml. Average progesterone concentrations during the luteal phase were significantly lower in African elephants compared with Asian elephants (328 +/- 13, N = 30 cycles vs. 456 +/- 23, N = 14 cycles; p less than 0.001). ILH ranged from nondetectable to 11.6 ng/ml. These data suggest that the length of the ovarian cycle in the African elephant is about 16 wk and confirm that the length of the ovarian cycle in the Asian elephant is about 15 wk.  相似文献

Seasonal analysis of 1239 captive births of Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) indicated a peak in April to June (P less than 0.001). Studies on seven animals in Minnesota indicated that behavioral heat cycles and ovarian follicular phase cycles began in late January and ceased in early June. Behavioral observation of 12 heat cycles in four tigers yielded an estrous length of 5.3 +/- 0.2 days and an interestrous interval of 25.0 +/- 1.3 days. Hormone assays on weekly blood samples (N = 180) from three female tigers indicated 16 cycles in two breeding seasons. Peak estradiol-17 beta levels were 46.7 +/- 6.0 pg/ml (N = 17) and interestrous concentrations were 8.7 +/- 0.66 pg/ml (N = 28) during the breeding season. Anestrous estradiol levels were 4.2 +/- 0.5 pg/ml (N = 70). The interestrous interval between estradiol peaks was 24.9 +/- 1.3 days (N = 9) with two outliers of 42 days. Serum progesterone concentrations from February to June were 1.2 +/- 0.15 ng/ml (N = 32), providing no evidence for ovulation or corpus luteum formation. Luteinizing hormone (LH) levels were 0.56 +/- 0.04 ng/ml (N = 180). Serum testosterone (r=0.71, P less than 0.001) and androstenedione levels (r=0.75, P less than 0.001) were correlated with estradiol during the breeding season. The duration of anestrus was 8 mo in two of these tigers. The interval was shortened in one tiger by exposure to a 16L:8D photoperiod. The Siberian tiger appears to be a polyestrous seasonal breeder and an induced ovulator whose breeding season may be synchronized by photoperiod.  相似文献

Six healthy males were exposed to 20 mm Hg lower body negative pressure (LBNP) for 8 min followed by 40 mm Hg LBNP for 8 min. Naloxone (0.1 mg.kg-1) was injected intravenously during a 1 h resting period after which the LBNP protocol was repeated. Systolic, mean, and diastolic arterial blood pressures (SAP, MAP, DAP), and central venous pressure (CVP) were obtained using indwelling catheters. Cardiac output (CO), forearm blood flow (FBF), heart rate (HR), left ventricular ejection time (LVET), and electromechanical systole (EMS) were measured non-invasively. Pulse pressure (PP), stroke volume (SV), total peripheral resistance (TPR), forearm vascular resistance (FVR), systolic ejection rate (SER), pre-ejection period (PEP), PEP/LVET and indices for the systolic time intervals (LVETI, EMSI, PEPI) were calculated. During the second LBNP exposure, only two parameters differed from the pre-injection values: DAP at LBNP = 40 mm Hg increased from 60.0 +/- 4.8 mm Hg to 64.8 +/- 4.1 mm Hg (N = 4, p less than 0.02) and LVETI at LBNP = 20 mm Hg increased from 384.4 +/- 5.2 ms to 396.8 +/- 6.2 ms (N = 6, p less than 0.02).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine ethnic differences in the metabolic responses to a 16-week intervention designed to improve insulin sensitivity (SI), adiposity, and inflammation in obese African-American and Latino adolescents. A total of 100 participants (African Americans: n = 48, Latino: n = 52; age: 15.4 ± 1.1 years, BMI percentile: 97.3 ± 3.3) were randomly assigned to interventions: control (C; n = 30), nutrition (N; n = 39, 1×/week focused on decreasing sugar and increasing fiber intake), or nutrition + strength training (N+ST; n = 31, 2×/week). The following were measured at pre- and postintervention: strength, dietary intake, body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry/magnetic resonance imaging) and glucose/insulin indexes (oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)/intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT)) and inflammatory markers. Overall, N compared to C and N+ST reported significant improvements in SI (+16.5% vs. -32.3% vs. -6.9% respectively, P < 0.01) and disposition index (DI: +15.5% vs. -14.2% vs. -13.7% respectively, P < 0.01). N+ST compared to C and N reported significant reductions in hepatic fat fraction (HFF: -27.3% vs. -4.3% vs. 0% respectively, P < 0.01). Compared to N, N+ST reported reductions in plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) (-38.3% vs. +1.0%, P < 0.01) and resistin (-18.7% vs. +11.3%, P = 0.02). There were no intervention effects for all other measures of adiposity or inflammation. Significant intervention by ethnicity interactions were found for African Americans in the N group who reported increases in total fat mass, 2-h glucose and glucose incremental areas under the curve (IAUC) compared to Latinos (P's < 0.05). These interventions yielded differential effects with N reporting favorable improvements in SI and DI and N+ST reporting marked reductions in HFF and inflammation. Both ethnic groups had significant improvements in metabolic health; however some improvements were not seen in African Americans.  相似文献

Longer and more intense heat and drought stresses will occur in terrestrial ecosystems in the future. Although the effects of individual heat or drought stress on wheat plants have been largely explored, the regulatory effect of nitrogen (N) on winter wheat under heat, drought, and combined stresses and whether N alleviates damage to wheat plants caused by these stresses remain unclear. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to investigate the growth, photosynthesis, antioxidant enzyme and N metabolism-related enzyme activity, cell membrane system, osmoregulatory substance, and yield responses to heat, drought, and combined stresses in wheat plants and to clarify the regulatory effects of N on the growth, physiological and biochemical characteristics, and yield of wheat plants under stress conditions. The results showed that wheat plant exposure to individual heat or drought stress reduced photosynthesis and N metabolism-related enzyme activities and increased antioxidant enzyme activities, electrolyte leakage (EL), and the contents of MDA (malondialdehyde) and O2? (superoxide anion). The above parameters showed typical superposition effects under combined stress. Under individual heat or drought stress, wheat plants treated with a medium (N2) or high (N3) N supply maintained higher photosynthesis and N metabolism-related enzyme activities than did those treated with a low N supply (N1). Enhanced heat and drought tolerance in wheat plants under an appropriate N supply may be attributed to improved antioxidant capacity, as exemplified by increased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and to enhanced osmoregulation capacity, as signified by increased contents of soluble sugar (SS), soluble protein (SP), and proline (Pro). Variable importance in projection (VIP) analysis indicated that efficient SOD, POD, CAT, and GR activities and an increased Pro content had superior potential to alleviate heat, drought, and combined stress stresses in wheat plants, and the improvements in growth and grain yield in wheat plants further confirmed the oxidative stress alleviation and stress tolerance enhancement. However, positive effects of N on wheat growth and grain yield under combined stress were usually observed under a low N supply. These results may facilitate future research on the effects of N fertilizer on the stress resistance of winter wheat.

The glycophorin A (GPA) somatic mutation assay for N0 and NN mutant erythrocytes was performed on 245 current and 48 retired workers who had been occupationally exposed to radiation at the British Nuclear Fuels plc facility at Sellafield. A positive association with increasing age was found for current workers for both N0 and NN frequencies of 0.14 +/- 0.05 x 10(-6) (P = 0.012) and 0.25 +/- 0.07 x 10(-6) (P = 0.0003) per year, respectively. No association with age was found for the retired workers. In a comparison of ever-smokers with never-smokers, no difference was observed for N0 frequencies for current workers, but a significantly higher frequency was found for ever-smokers in the retired group (P = 0.001). NN mutant frequencies were slightly higher in ever-smokers than in never-smokers for both current and retired workers, but in neither case was the increase significant. In age-adjusted analyses for N0 mutant frequencies, a slight positive radiation dose response was found for current workers (1.6 +/- 3.8 x 10(-6) per Sv), for retired workers (2.9 +/- 2.5 x 10(-6) per Sv), and in the combined analysis (2.6 +/- 2.2 x 10(-6) per Sv), but in no case did this reach significance. Similar analyses for NN mutant frequencies revealed a positive dose response for current workers (4.7 +/- 4.6 x 10(-6) per Sv) and a negative response for retired workers (-2.4 +/- 3.6 x 10(-6) per Sv) that was maintained in the combined analysis (-1.4 +/- 2.8 x 10(-6) per Sv), but none of these slopes was significantly different from zero. The results suggest that the GPA mutation assay is insufficiently sensitive to be used as a biological marker of low-dose chronic exposure and provide further evidence that, in contrast to high acute radiation exposure, protracted exposure is much less effective at inducing somatic mutations in vivo.  相似文献

We exposed Dorper-cross ewes at approximately 120-135 days of gestation to a hot (40 degrees C, 60% relative humidity) and a cold (4 degrees C, 90% relative humidity) environment and to treadmill exercise (2.1 km/h, 5 degrees gradient) and measured fetal lamb and ewe body temperatures using previously implanted abdominal radiotelemeters. When ewes were exposed to 2 h of heat or 30 min of exercise, body temperature rose less in the fetus than in the mother, such that the difference between fetal and maternal body temperature, on average 0.6 degrees C before the thermal stress, fell significantly by 0.54 +/- 0.06 degrees C (SE, n = 8) during heat exposure and by 0.21 +/- 0.08 degrees C (n = 7) during exercise. During 6 h of maternal exposure to cold, temperature fell significantly less in the fetus than in the ewe, and the difference between fetal and maternal body temperature rose to 1.16 +/- 0.26 degrees C (n = 9). Thermoregulatory strategies used by the pregnant ewe for thermoregulation during heat or cold exposure appear to protect the fetus from changes in its thermal environment.  相似文献

Interactive effects of increasing atmospheric CO2 with resource limitations on production of surface wax in plants have not been studied. Pinus palustris seedlings were grown for 1 yr at two levels of soil N (40 or 400 kg N_ha-1_yr-1) and water stress (-0.5 or -1.5 MPa xylem pressure potential) in open-top field chambers under two levels of CO2 (365 or 720 mumol/mol). Needle surface wax content was determined at 8 mo (fall) and 12 mo (spring) and epicuticular wax morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at 12 mo. Wax content expressed on both a leaf area and dry mass basis was increased due to main effects of low N and water stress. No main effects of CO2 were observed; however, a CO2 x N interaction at 12 mo indicated that under low soil N the elevated CO2 treatment had less wax (surface area or dry mass basis) compared to its ambient counterpart. Morphologically, low N needle surfaces appeared rougher compared to those of high N needles due to more extensive wax ridges. Although the main effect of water treatment on wax density was not reflected by changes in wax morphology, the CO2 x N interaction was paralleled by alterations in wax appearance. Decreases in density and less prominent epicuticular wax ridges resulting from growth under elevated CO2 and limiting N suggest that dynamics of plant/atmosphere and plant/pathogen interactions may be altered.  相似文献

Tissue copper concentration in whole Cambarus bartoni, exposed for four weeks to 0.125, 0.25 and 0.5 mg Cu/litre and 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 mg Ni/litre in the laboratory at 18 degrees C, showed a linear relationship with exposure time at 0.25 and 0.5 mg Cu/litre; the regression slope at 0.5 mg Cu/litre (r2 = 0.218; 0.001 less than P less than or equal to 0.05) was approximately two times higher than that at 0.25 mg Cu/litre (r2 = 0.148; 0.025 less than P less than or equal to 0.05). Regression analysis of nickel concentrations in whole crayfish as a function of exposure time showed a third degree polynomial relationship at 0.4 (y = 49.989 + 14.77x - 15.395x2 + 3.194x3) and 0.8 (y = 52.053 + 37.05x - 28.933x2 + 5.133x3) mg Ni/litre, as well as in the control (y = 49.126 + 27.253x - 23.468x2 + 4.168x3) (y = Ni concentration; x = exposure time in weeks), suggesting the occurrence of a Ni flux every 4 weeks.  相似文献

Ubiquitous and ever increasing use of mobile phones led to the growing concern about the effects of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emitted by cell phones on biological systems. The aim of this study is to explore whether long-term RFR exposure at different frequencies affects DNA damage and oxidant-antioxidant parameters in the blood and brain tissue of rats. 28 male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into four equal groups (n = 7). They were identified as Group 1: sham-control, Group 2: 900 MHz, Group 3: 1800 MHz, and Group 4: 2100 MHz. Experimental groups of rats were exposed to RFR 2 h/day for 6 months. The sham-control group of rats was subjected to the same experimental condition but generator was turned off. Specific absorption rates (SARs) at brain with 1 g average were calculated as 0.0845 W/kg, 0.04563 W/kg, and 0.03957, at 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz, respectively. Additionally, malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), total antioxidant status (TAS), and total oxidant status (TOS) analyses were conducted in the brain tissue samples. Results of the study showed that DNA damage and oxidative stress indicators were found higher in the RFR exposure groups than in the sham-control group. In conclusion, 900-, 1800-, and 2100-MHz RFR emitted from mobile phones may cause oxidative damage, induce increase in lipid peroxidation, and increase oxidative DNA damage formation in the frontal lobe of the rat brain tissues. Furthermore, 2100-MHz RFR may cause formation of DNA single-strand breaks.  相似文献

A 41-year study (1968–2008) of the orchids of the Catoctin Mountains, Frederick County, Maryland reveals that 19 of 21 species have experienced precipitous declines. Four of these species are currently considered Threatened or Endangered by the State of Maryland and another two are considered Rare. Annual census data at 167 sites from throughout the Catoctin Mountains on protected and unprotected lands (private and public) show a loss of three species from the study area, a decline of >90 % (ranging from 99 to 91 %) in seven species, and a decline of <90 % (ranging from 51 to 87 %) for nine species. Each species was analyzed using Ordinary Least Squares Analysis to show trends and document corresponding R2 and p values. We tested the hypothesis that this decline is due to intensified herbivory by white-tailed deer. The overall orchid census data is significantly inversely-correlated (R = ?0.93) to the white-tailed deer harvest data of Frederick County (a surrogate for population size), which includes the entirety of the study area. Platanthera ciliaris showed a huge expansion at a single site explicitly managed for this species otherwise this orchid showed a decline similar to the other species. Proper management is critical for the continuation of the orchid species in this study, be it control of the white-tailed deer herd or combating woody plant succession in the case of P. ciliaris.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the contribution of ethnicity (African American vs European/other ancestry), family religious affiliation, religious involvement, and religious values, to risk of alcohol and cigarette use in adolescent girls; and to estimate genetic and shared environmental effects on religious involvement and values. Telephone interviews were conducted with a sample of female like-sex twin pairs, aged 13-20 (n = 1687 pairs, including 220 minority pairs), as well as with one or both parents of twins aged 11-20 (n = 2111 families). These data, together with one-year follow-up twin questionnaire data, and two-year follow-up parent interview data, were used to compare ethnic differences. Proportional hazards regression models and genetic variance component models were fitted to the data. Despite higher levels of exposure to family, school and neighborhood environmental adversities, African American adolescents were less likely to become teenage drinkers or smokers. They showed greater religious involvement (frequency of attendance at religious services) and stronger religious values (eg belief in relying upon their religious beliefs to guide day-to-day living). Controlling for religious affiliation, involvement and values removed the ethnic difference in alcohol use, but had no effect on the difference in rates of smoking. Religious involvement and values exhibited high heritability in African Americans, but only modest heritability in EOAs. The strong protective effect of adolescent religious involvement and values, and its contribution to lower rates of African American alcohol use, was confirmed. We speculate about the possible association between high heritability of African American religious behavior and an accelerated maturation of religious values during adolescence.  相似文献

The benefits of performing ENDOR experiments at higher microwave frequency are demonstrated in a Q-band (35 GHz) ENDOR investigation of a number of proteins with [nFe-mS] clusters, n = 2, 3, 4. Each protein displays several resonances in the frequency range of 0-20 MHz. In all instances, features are seen near v approximately 13 and 8 MHz that can be assigned, respectively, to "distant ENDOR" from 13C in natural-abundance (1.1%) and from 14N (the delta m1 = +/- 2 transitions); the nuclei involved in this phenomenon are remote from and have negligible hyperfine couplings to the cluster. In addition, a number of proteins show local 13C ENDOR signals with resolved hyperfine interactions; these are assigned to the beta carbons of cysteines bound to the cluster [A(13C) approximately 1.0 MHz]. Five proteins show resolved, local delta m1 = +/- 2 ENDOR signals from 14N with an isotropic hyperfine coupling, 0.4 less than or equal to A(14N) less than or equal to 1.0, similar to those seen in ESEEM studies; these most likely are associated with N-H...S hydrogen bonds to the cluster. Anabaena ferredoxin further shows a signal corresponding to A(14N) approximately 4 MHz. Quadrupole coupling constants are derived for both local and distant 14N signals. The interpretation of the data is supported by studies on 15N- and 13C-enriched ferredoxin (Fd) from Anabaena 7120, where the 15N signals can be clearly correlated with the corresponding 14N signals and where the 13C signals are strongly enhanced. Thus, the observation of 14N delta m1 = +/- 2 signals at Q-band provides a new technique for examining weak interactions with a cluster.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the running performances and associated thermoregulatory responses of African and Caucasian runners in cool and warm conditions. On two separate occasions, 12 (n = 6 African, n = 6 Caucasian) well-trained men ran on a motorized treadmill at 70% of peak treadmill running velocity for 30 min followed by an 8-km self-paced performance run (PR) in cool (15 degrees C) or warm (35 degrees C) humid (60% relative humidity) conditions. Time to complete the PR in the cool condition was not different between groups ( approximately 27 min) but was significantly longer in warm conditions for Caucasian (33.0 +/- 1.6 min) vs. African (29.7 +/- 2.3 min, P < 0.01) runners. Rectal temperatures were not different between groups but were higher during warm compared with cool conditions. During the 8-km PR, sweat rates for Africans (25.3 +/- 2.3 ml/min) were lower compared with Caucasians (32.2 +/- 4.1 ml/min; P < 0.01). Relative rates of heat production were less for Africans than Caucasians in the heat. The finding that African runners ran faster only in the heat despite similar thermoregulatory responses as Caucasian runners suggests that the larger Caucasians reduce their running speed to ensure an optimal rate of heat storage without developing dangerous hyperthermia. According to this model, the superior running performance in the heat of these African runners can be partly attributed to their smaller size and hence their capacity to run faster in the heat while storing heat at the same rate as heavier Caucasian runners.  相似文献

The daily mean of serum progesterone in cyclic ewes (N = 5) as well as the profile characteristics of progesterone and cortisol in response to an acute single dose (5 i.u./kg liveweight 0.75) of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) into ovariectomized ewes (N = 4) was investigated during exposure to a constant thermoneutral temperature of 18 +/- 1 degree C or to a daily cyclic heat stress temperature of 18 degrees C-35 degrees C-18 degrees C, in an environmental chamber. Serum collected daily from the cyclic ewes was assayed for progesterone, while serum collected more frequently for 10 h, on the 14th day of exposure to the respective temperature, from the ovariectomized ewes was assayed for progesterone and cortisol by RIAs. In cyclic ewes, heat stress increased the area under the daily progesterone curve (P less than 0.09) but had no effect on progesterone concentration after the regression of the CL. In ovariectomized ewes, ACTH significantly elevated the response of both cortisol and progesterone (r = 0.75, P less than 0.001) within 10-15 min of injection. In the ovariectomized ewes and during heat stress, the responses of progesterone and cortisol to ACTH were characterized by an initial acute rise, a transient drop, a steep elevation and a gradual but prolonged decline. During thermoneutral temperatures, this biphasic response pattern was not observed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

To examine the response to exposure to a thermal gradient in coral, we assessed the effect of a gradual 10 degrees C temperature increase (22 to 32 degrees C over 10 h) on normal (N), partially bleached (P) and control (C) samples collected from different branches of the same coral (Pocillopora capitata). We examined markers of oxidative stress, including lipid peroxidation (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, indicators of bleaching, including chlorophyll a (Chl a) and carotenoid pigment (PC) levels, as well as zooxanthellae density. Our results revealed that N, P and C coral samples all contained higher levels of PC versus Chl a. The levels of both pigments increased as the temperature increased from 22 to 28 degrees C only in N and C samples, whereas P samples showed less cellular damage than N and C samples at temperatures between 26 and 28 degrees C, and had greater antioxidant activities at temperatures between 26 and 30 degrees C. The rate of zooxanthellar expulsion consistently increased with temperature in all three coral types across the entire temperature range. Collectively, these results indicate that temperature has a direct effect on the antagonistic relationship between temperature-induced damage and protective antioxidant mechanisms in this type of coral.  相似文献

Experiment I: Hyperadrenal states were induced in intact heifers (N = 3) or adrenalectomized (ADRX) heifers (N = 3) by constant infusion of ACTH (20.8 micrograms, 1-24 ACTH/h) or hydrocortisone succinate (HS) (30 mg/h), respectively. Control infusions consisted of the saline vehicle. All infusions began on Day 2 of a normal estrous cycle. Exogenous gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) was given as a 100-micrograms bolus i.v. on Days 7, 9, and 11 (intact) or 5, 7, and 9 (ADRX) of the cycle. In intact heifers, the cumulative luteinizing hormone (LH) response was reduced (P less than 0.05) by the ACTH treatment. In ADRX heifers, the HS treatment did not alter the cumulative response but did alter the qualitative response with a time X treatment interaction (P less than 0.01). The LH response in the HS-ADRX animals had a slower onset and lower peak concentrations with a more prolonged response. Experiment II: Dispersed bovine pituitary cells were prepared and incubated at concentrations of 2 X 10(6) viable cells in 2.0 ml per dish. Cells were exposed to cortisol at concentrations of 0.01, 0.10, 0.21 and 1.03 X 10(-6) M for time periods of 8, 14, 20 or 26 h for basal LH secretion studies and 10, 16, 22 and 28 h for GnRH-stimulated LH secretion. Both dosage of cortisol and length of exposure had a depressing effect on basal LH release. The cortisol pretreatment also decreased (P less than 0.001) the LH release following addition of GnRH (8.5 X 10(-8) M) in cultures at all dosages and exposure times of cortisol. However, there was no decrease in LH or protein content of cells. These experiments indicate a direct action of cortisol on the pituitary gland to depress both basal and stimulated LH release.  相似文献
