The hair density of adult Eurasian otters Lutra lutra (Linnaeus, 1758) and sea otters Enhydra lutris (Linnaeus, 1758) was analysed using skin samples taken from frozen carcasses. Lutra lutra exhibited a mean hair density of about 70 000 hairs/cm2 (whole body, appendages excepted), the mean individual density ranging from about 60 000 to 80 000 hairs/cm2. The dominant hair type were secondary hairs (wool hairs), the hair coat comprising only 1.26% of primary hairs (PH). Secondary hair (SH) density remained constant over the body (appendages excepted), whereas a few variations in PH density were observed. Neither an influence of the sex, nor a seasonal variation of the hair coat was found, moulting seems to be continuous. Enhydra lutris had a hair density between 120 000 and 140 000 hairs/cm2, the primary hairs representing less than 1% within the hair coat. Hair density remained quite constant over the regions of the trunk but was lower at the head (about 60 000 hairs/cm2 on the cheek). The hair follicles were arranged in specific groups with different bundles of varying size, normally comprising dominant numbers of wool hair (SH) follicles. Invariably there was always a large central primary hair follicle and numerous sebaceous glands between the bundles and principally around the PH follicles. The results are discussed related to possible ecological influences on hair coat density.

Summary Mechanical oscillation properties of cricket (Acheta domesticus) filiform hair sensilla were measured at different larval stages, as an indication of larval sensory capacities and for comparison with data in the literature on central nervous changes during development. The hairs were stimulated by airborne vibration over a frequency range of 10 to 220 Hz. Best frequency, angular displacement at best frequency, slope of angular-displacement tuning curve and phase of hair deflection relative to air particle velocity were tested for correlation with hair length, which is proportional to the age of a sensillum. The ranges found for the various oscillation parameters in early larval stages were similar to or larger than those in adults. Oscillation properties changed with both the developmental stage of the hair sensilla and that of the whole animal. Four individually identifiable hair sensilla were analysed separately; the sensory neurons of two of them are known to change synaptic properties during maturation. Angular displacement at a given stimulus intensity was maximal for all hairs after differentiation, and decreased during further development. The hairs did not show clear common changes for any of the other oscillation parameters. Yet particular changes were found for individual hairs.

The site of action of the goY mutant gene was determined in the aggregation chimaeras C57BL-goY/goY----DBA (+/+). Chimerism was detected by mosaicism of coat pigmentation and electrophoretic pattern of glucose phosphate isomerase. In 28-day-old chimaeras the regions of light-brown coat alternated black coat, stripes of short hairs alternated those of long hairs. These stripes of different length and width extended from spine in lateral-ventral direction. The hairs plucked from long hairs stripes had a similar length that those of goY/goY mice of same age, but the hairs plucked from short hair stripes corresponded to the hair length of +/+ mice. These data show that the goY gene acts in epidermal cells of hair follicles and its expression is autonomous. It has been established that in double homozygotes goY/goYfzY/fzY both mutant genes are expressed: the considerable increase of hair length as compared to norm--the effect of the goY gene and curly coat--the effect of the fzY gene. In goY/goYfzY/fzY mice during the formation of G1 guard hairs the incomplete expression of the goY gene is observed that is due to the suppression of hair growth by the fzY mutant gene. The fzY gene does not suppress the growth of G2 hairs and therefore the full expression of the goY gene occurs in goY/goYfzY/fzY adult mice.

The characteristics of serial cross-sections of hairs collected from an adult male Japanese monkey were investigated. Cross-sections were made of five to eight pieces per hair. The shapes of the cross-sections were elliptical or rounded on the whole. The fibre indices of the sections ranged from 83 to 100. In particular, those of proximal (basal) sections were close to 100. The hair diameter was 86.4 μ at maximum and 27.2 μ at minimum. A tendency was observed for the longer hairs to have thicker diameters. The changes in thickness along the fibre shaft were slightly different in relation to hair length. The thickest point was at around the middle of the fibre in the intermediate hair, somewhat towards the top of the central part in the long hair, and somewhat towards the base in the short hair. The hair of the Japanese monkey, however, was considered to be scanty in changes along the fibre shaft in comparison with many other animals. Medullae could scarcely be seen in the short hair and in the terminal and proximal sections of all hairs. Their shapes in cross-section were not uniform and rough at the margins. The fibre-medulla indices were generally less than 30 and smaller than those of many other mammals. Pigmentary granules were observed in all sections examined. The granules were black-grey in sections of the black-grey coloured part and yellow in the yellowish sections. They were dense in distal sections and scarce in sections close to the base. The cross-sectional appearance of the thickest part of the long hair was considered to be useful for hair identification, since it was good in pigmentation and medullation and relatively small fibre index.

In this study, data on the production of branched root hairs in the seedlings of A. thaliana under progressive water deficit were presented. The overall production of branched hairs was quite high under stress conditions and amounted to 8.27%. On the contrary, this form of root hairs was almost absent in the control group (0.27%). The highest number of branched hairs was produced at the beginning of the stress action. Branched root hairs are quite uniform structures in the sense of their morphology. To solve the question of how the branched hairs grow, the structure of actin cytoskeleton was explored. This structure was different in the root hair and in its branch, which is an indication that the hair stops its growth at the moment when the branching starts. We have also characterized the production of branched root hairs in hormonal mutants of Arabidopsis and found the involvement of auxin in this process.

A morphological study was carried out on hairs of the Japanese monkey. The shapes in cross-section were circles or ellipses. The diameters of the hairs ranged from 13.5 to 92 μ, and the mean value in each monkey was between about 30 and 40 μ. The average value of the fibre index was approximately 90 in each monkey. The arrangement of the medulla was considered to be of the narrow medulla lattice type. Medullae were developed poorly or disappeared in hairs with a diameter of less than 30 μ. A correlation was noted between the hair thickness and presence of medulla: medullated hairs were thicker than non-medullated hairs. A tendency was found for thicker hairs to be of greater length. The hairs of the Japanese monkey could be divided broadly into two types: medullated hair and non-medullated hair. The medullated hairs could be regarded as guard hair-like hairs since they were thick and long, and the non-medullated hairs as underhair-like hairs since they were thin and short.

The structure of mechanoreceptors at the base of labeilar taste hairs of the blowfly Phaenicia serricata were examined in stimulated and unstimulated conditions (i.e. with the hair bent or unbent). Physiological recordings from the mechanoreceptor showed that the receptors responded when the hair is bent dorsally or ventrally and when the hair is bent at extreme angles. These conditions are the same as those placed on hairs in the anatomical studies. Bending the hair toward the ventral labellar surface caused the hair base to compress and indent the tubular body and its surrounding membrane and sheath at the distal end of the mechanoreceptor dendrite. In compressed tubular bodies, microtubules oriented longitudinally were bent and separated a greater distance from each other. Separation as much as 70 nm was observed in compressed tubular bodies as compared with a maximum of 26 nm between microtubules in tubular bodies of unbent hairs. The dense amorphous material between microtubules of compressed tubular bodies formed prominent bridges 18 nm thick connecting the microtubules at intervals of 48–74 nm. Thin 10 nm filaments were also evident in the spaces between microtubules. When the hair was bent toward the proximal end of the proboscis, the tip of the tubular body was bent about 15 °. The tubular body appears to function as a firm but resilient structure over which the dendritic membrane can be stretched during mechanostimulation. Comparison of morphology of bent and unbent hairs suggests a means by which mechanical force from the movement of the hair is transferred to the receptors by structures in the hair socket region. No differences were found in ciliary structures of stimulated and unstimulated receptors.

The effect of leaf hairs on searching efficiency of adult female Phytoseiulus persimilis was investigated. For this purpose we used the ornamental crop Gerbera jamesonii and determined the predator's searching efficiency on three cultivars that differ largely in the density of leaf hairs on the undersurface of the leaves. Walking speed of the mites was highest on the cultivar with the lowest leaf hair density. Walking activity, defined as the percentage of time spent walking, was not dependent on leaf hair density of the cultivars. At both prey densities tested, time until first predation increased with leaf hair density. The predation rate of adult female P. persimilis is affected by trichome density, particularly when prey density is low. At prey densities of 1.3 and 2.5 Tetranychus urticae eggs cm–2, predation rate was inversely related to leaf hair density. At a prey density of 8.0 eggs cm–2 no significant effect of leaf hair density on predation rate was found. These negative effects on searching efficiency and predation success at low prey density of P. persimilis suggest that biological control of T. urticae on gerbera may be hampered by leaf hairs.

1.  The ecdysial growth of cercal filiform hairs was investigated in the cricketGryllus bimaculatus. The length of hairs varied from 40 to 500 m in the 1st, from 40 to 650 m in the 3rd and from 30 to 800 m in the 5th instar nymphs (Fig. 1). Hemimetabolous development causes both hair growth and the appearance of new hairs at each ecdysis (Figs. 2, 3). The newly acquired hairs were shorter than 200 m in every case (Fig. 4).
2.  Velocity thresholds of cercal sensory interneurons (CSIs) to sinusoidal air-currents were measured in 3rd instar nymphs (Fig. 5 A, B, C). CSIs 8-1 (medial giant interneuron: MGI) and 9-1 (lateral giant interneuron: LGI) showed threshold curves of acceleration sensitivity similar to those in adults. The thresholds for CSIs 8-1 and 9-1 were on the average higher in nymphs than in adults. The threshold curves for the two velocity-sensitive CSIs 10-2 and 10-3 were similar for nymphs and adults.
3.  Velocity thresholds of cercal filiform sensilla were measured in 3rd instar nymphs (Fig. 6). In spite of the small size of nymphal hairs, the most sensitive ones showed the same sensitivity as did the long 1000 m hairs of the adult.
4.  The filiform hairs in 3rd instar nymphs were supported by a weaker spring than in adults (Fig. 7). Relative stiffness was about 50% of that in the long hairs in adults, but not much different than that in the short hairs.
5.  Based on a theoretical estimation of hair motion, the threshold angle of a filiform sensillum in the 3rd instar nymph was calculated (Fig. 9). Threshold angles of the long sensilla seemed to be unchanged throughout hemimetabolous development.

It is commonly known that tigers (Panthera tigris) groom themselves by licking their coats, which leads to an abundance of hairs in their feces. These hairs are designated specially as “fecal hairs”. In our study, in order to explore fecal hairs potential as a DNA source for genetic analysis, 55 fecal hair samples were collected from 23 captive South China tigers (P. t. amoyensis). According to the amplification of mitochondrial primers loop F and loop R, DNA quality of noninvasive samples were grouped into three grades: grade I—the highest-quality DNA, grade II—high-quality DNA, and grade III—poor-quality DNA. No failed amplifications on microsatellite primers and only 0.27% genotyping errors occurred with grade I fecal hair DNA, as compared with 9.4% failed amplifications on microsatellite primers and 9.5% genotyping errors with grade II fecal hair DNA. It was found that 25.45% of fecal hair DNA was grade I and 65.45 and 10.00% of fecal hair DNA were grades II and III, respectively, as compared with 4.35% grade I fecal DNA and 34.78 and 60.87% grades II and III fecal DNA, respectively. Thus, higher-quality DNA can be extracted from fecal hairs than feces. In addition, DNA could be extracted from hair shafts of tigers and a minimum of 2000 hair shafts were required for visible DNA bands on a 1% agarose gel. These findings demonstrate that fecal hairs may serve as a convenient and reliable genomic DNA source for genotype analysis. Zoo Biol 28:49–58, 2009.

The structure of Azolla pinnate leaves was examined by means of light and transmission electron microscopy. Emphasis was put on the ultra structural cytology of leaf cavity hairs both in association with Anabaena and in Anabaena-free cultures of Azolla and on the roles of the hair in substance change between the symbionts. The cavity hairs were multicultural and branched. There were numerous mitochondria, plastids, endoplasmic reticular and ribosome’s in the cytoplasm of the hair. A. marked characteristic of the hair was the cell wall ingrowths; There were large electron-transparent area between the in growing cell wall and the plasmolemma. Some vesicles were found in this area. It was suggested that these vesicles as transporters played the role in transporting substances. Electron microscopy revealed that some differences were present between the basal cell and the terminal branched cell of the hairs. In the latter, the cytoplasma, organelles, growing wall and vesicles were richer in the electron-transparent area than in the former This feature of the terminal branched cell showed that the terminal cell of the hair was more active in absorption and/or secretion of metabolites than that of the basal cell. Some hairs were found near the stem apex of Azolla. It was suggested that these hairs functioned in supplying the nitric compounds for the algae living on the stem apex of Azolla. These algae had no ability to fix nitrogen because of lacking heterocyst. In the absence of Anabaena azollae, the leaf cavity hairs were still present in Azolla pinnata. However, a lot of osmiophilic substances can often be seen in the vacuole of this hair.

Selecting plants with improved root hair growth is a key strategy for improving phosphorus-uptake efficiency in agriculture. While significant inter- and intra-specific variation is reported for root hair length, it is not known whether these phenotypic differences are exhibited under conditions that are known to affect root hair elongation. This work investigates the effect of soil strength, soil water content (SWC) and soil particle size (SPS) on the root hair length of different root hair genotypes of barley. The root hair and rhizosheath development of five root hair genotypes of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was compared in soils with penetrometer resistances ranging from 0.03 to 4.45 MPa (dry bulk densities 1.2–1.7 g cm?3). A “short” (SRH) and “long” root hair (LRH) genotype was selected to further investigate whether differentiation of these genotypes was related to SWC or SPS when grown in washed graded sand. In low-strength soil (<1.43 MPa), root hairs of the LRH genotype were on average 25 % longer than that of the SRH genotype. In high-strength soil, root hair length of the LRH genotype was shorter than that in low-strength soil and did not differ from that of the SRH genotype. Root hairs were shorter in wetter soils or soils with smaller particles, and again SRH and LRH did not differ in hair length. Longer root hairs were generally, but not always, associated with larger rhizosheaths, suggesting that mucilage adhesion was also important. The root hair growth of barley was found to be highly responsive to soil properties and this impacted on the expression of phenotypic differences in root hair length. While root hairs are an important trait for phosphorus acquisition in dense soils, the results highlight the importance of selecting multiple and potentially robust root traits to improve resource acquisition in agricultural systems.

The great majority of angiosperm species form a group in which either every cell in the root epidermis produces a root hair, or the cells that produce these hairs are randomly distributed. We describe, for the first time, pattern in the root epidermal cells of a species within this group. The seedling root of Echium plantagineum L. (Boraginaceae) has an epidermis in which almost every cell produces a root hair, but these are of two types, short hairs (up to 200 micro m) and long hairs (>200 micro m), which are in separate cell files, with the cells bearing long hairs usually separated by one or two files of cells bearing short hairs; the epidermal cells with the long root hairs are longer than the epidermal cells with the short root hairs. The long root hairs are initiated and develop earlier than the short root hairs. Transverse sections of the region of the root which contains only developing long root hairs show that the hair cells are located above anticlinal walls between underlying cortical cells. We regard the distribution of root epidermal cells in E. plantagineum as a sub-type of this group. We discuss the possible evolution, from this sub-type, of another group that is characterised by hair cells and non-hair cells occurring in separate files.

Summary The internal and external structure of the galeae of the adult red turnip beetle, Entomoscelis americana, was studied using SEM and TEM. The galea broadens from base to truncated tip and its sides are of thick, sculpted cuticle invested with pores and coarse spines. The tip is of thinner, flexible cuticle covered with 8–12 uniporous, blunt-tipped apical pegs and a single, aporous, sharply-pointed apical hair. The coarse spines are singly innervated probable mechanosensilla owing to the tubular body at the distal end of the dendrite. These sensilla likely act as tactile hairs monitoring galeal-effected movements of food particles into the functional mouth. The pores are associated with glands within the galea. The function of the presumed secretion is not known but may be to keep objects and dried saliva from sticking to the mouthparts. The apical pegs are innervated by five neurons, each producing a single dendrite. Four dendrites enter the single peg lumen and communicate with the terminal pore. The fifth differentiates into a tubular body that inserts into the peg base. These are typical insect contact chemosensilla that, because of their location, would taste incoming food. The apical hair has no pores but is innervated by two neurons, each extending a dendrite into the hair lumen in chemosensillar fashion. The sensory mode of this sensillum is unknown but is probably not mechanoor chemoreception. Many of its features, reminiscent of taste hairs, lead us to hypothesize that it represents a one-time chemosensillum recently modified to a new form and sensory mode.Because larval and adult E. americana share similar food plant requirements, we hypothesize that similarities will be seen in their mouthpart sensilla. Comparisons of the adults and larvae show the common features between their respective galeal taste hairs are only those of insect contact chemosensilla in general. However, the adult apical hair and the larval medial sensillum show striking specific structural similarities. We propose that these are true structural and functional homologues.

We examined whether heavy browsing by sika deer, Cervus nippon Temminck, changed morphological characteristics of a Japanese nettle, Urtica thunbergiana Sieb. et Zucc., in Nara Park, where a large population of sika deer has been maintained for more than 1,200 years. Wild nettles of Nara Park exhibited smaller leaf area, 11–223 times more stinging hairs per leaf, and 58–630-times higher stinging hair densities than those of other areas where there was no evidence of sika deer browsing. There were no significant differences in stinging hair length between the areas. Nettles from Nara Park that were cultivated from seeds in a greenhouse retained a larger number and higher density of stinging hairs. In the field, nettles of Nara Park were less frequently browsed by sika deer and showed higher survivorship than nettles that were transplanted from an unbrowsed area into Nara Park. These results indicate that: (1) the U. thunbergiana population of Nara Park has an extremely high stinging hair density compared with those of unbrowsed areas; (2) this characteristic has a genetic basis, and (3) stinging hairs serve as a defensive structure against sika deer, contributing to an increase in survivorship. Thus, we conclude that a U. thunbergiana population in Nara Park, with extremely high stinging hair densities, has evolved through natural selection due to heavy browsing by sika deer.

The effects of selection of agouti rats (with genotype AAHH) on the tame and aggressive behavior and dietary methyl given to females from the eighth day of pregnancy to the fifth day after the birth of the offspring on the intensity of the agouti coat color in the offspring have been studied. The morphometric parameters of hair determining the darkness of the agouti color (the total length of guard hairs, the lengths of their eumelanin end and pheomelanin band, the ratio between the lengths of the eumelanin and pheomelanin portions of the hair, the total length of the awn hairs, and the relative length of their widened “lanceolate” upper end) have been compared. It has been found that selection of agouti rats for aggressive behavior is accompanied by darkening of the coat color compared to tame rats due to an increase in the ratio of the length of the black eumelanin end of the guard hairs to the length of the yellow pheomelanin band. Methyl-containing additives to the diet of females affect the intensity of the agouti coat color in the offsprings with both types of behavior, but to different extents. Aggressive offspring is more sensitive to the mother’s methyl-containing diet: the percentage of animals that are darker than control rats is higher among aggressive animals than among tame ones due to a greater increase in the ratio between dark and light portions of hairs. The possible mechanisms of differences in the phenotypic modifications of coat color in control and experimental agouti rats with different types of behavior are discussed.
