This is the first study on Nosema meligethi in populations of Meligethes aeneus in Turkey. In total, four of the 2020 beetles studied were infected with the parasite, giving an infection average of 0.2% in Turkey. Infection was observed in two of the eight localities investigated, and the infection rates in these localities were similar: 2.94 and 2.86%. N. meligethi infection was not observed in 1676 beetles (83% of the total studied) from five localities, including the main Brassica oleracea growing area, where chemical pesticides are commonly used. Three hundred and forty‐four beetles (17% of the total studied) were collected from three localities from uncultivated areas where there is no chemical pesticide application; infection was found in beetles from two of these localities. This study confirms that pesticide usage at sampling sites may play a role in the occurrence of N. meligethi, because the samples from which Nosema was detected originated from areas in which pesticides are not used.  相似文献

Winter samples totalling 2308 specimens of Trisopterus luscus (total length range: 13–36 cm) caught in northern Portugal were examined for infections with Lernaeocera lusci. Infection prevalence was of 42%, and infection intensity was 1.7 copepods per infected fish. Individual infection varied between 1 and 9 copepods per infected specimen; 30.6% of the fish had bilateral parasitosis. There was a significant correlation (P<0.01) between fish length and prevalence. Length-weight relationships of uninfected and infected fish were not significantly different (P > 0.05) and thus provide evidence that L. lusci has no effect on the condition of T. luscus in all the examined 1–cm size classes.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the prevalence, geographical distribution, and effects of a microsporan parasite, Loma branchialis, in Atlantic cod in coastal Newfoundland. The parasite was identified microscopically as opaque, ovoid xenomas, primarily in the gills, heart, and spleen. Although widely distributed in young fish inhabiting 7 coastal localities, prevalence was 1-7% in general, <0.01% in older and large fish, but 78% in market-size cod from a commercial farm. Some of the latter fish were emaciated, and approximately 2 mo after the parasite was detected, 63% succumbed with a massive infection. Condition factor and blood values were significantly lower than those in reference fish. An experimental study conducted over 2 yr revealed that mass gained and condition factor were significantly lower in infected cod than in controls at the termination of the study. Feed consumption, mass gained, feed conversion efficiency, and condition factor also were significantly lower in another group of infected cod of marketable size studied over 12 wk. Xenomas also were observed in the heart and gills of year class II cod reared in a hatchery. Loma branchialis is considered to be a potential pathogen in both hatchery-reared and net pen-cultured cod in Newfoundland.  相似文献

From October 1985 until July 1987, the seasonal dynamics of Rhabdochona denudata in its principal definitive host, the chub (Leuciscus cephalus), was studied in the Rokytná River (the Danube basin), Czechoslovakia. Prevalence (overall prevalence 77%) and intensity of infection (1-59 nematodes per fish) in the fish were high all year, with both abiotic and biotic factors influencing the fluctuations. Maximum values of prevalence (82-87%) were found in the fish with body length exceeding 20 cm; the mean intensity was highest in the size-group of fish 20-25 cm long, whereas its values gradually decreased in larger fish, this being due to the choice of food by fish of different size-groups. In contrast to the situation in other localities, an annual maturation cycle was not evident and egg-producing female nematodes were present in fish throughout the year. New infections in fish were most common in summer but occurred all year round. This life history pattern seems to be mainly due to the availability of infected ephemeropteran intermediate hosts during all seasons, in this case the nymphs of Ephemera danica, a species noted for its two-year development. In this locality, specifically not determined Rhabdochona larvae were recorded from the mayfly nymphs Ephemera danica (0.4%), Ecdyonurus aurantiacus (7%), and Caenis macrura (10%). Phoxinus phoxinus being a widely distributed through Palaearctic and ecologically specialised species is a good model to study parasite communities. 72 specimens of P. phoxinus from 5 localities of the Siberia and Mongolia has been studied by the author and 651 specimens--from 5 localities in Kola Peninsula by the other researches. 595 specimens were studied by B. S. Shulman (1983) year around. To describe infra- and component parasite communities the Brillouin, Shannon, Berger-Parker indexes were used. Communities within individual fish were compared within, and between localities with quantitative percentage similarity index (Esch e. a., 1988). The Brillouin, Shannon and Berger-Parker indexes can be calculated based on abundance or total number of parasites of each species for component or compound communities. Intensity cannot be used. Significant negative correlation was observed between the Brillouin and Berger-Parker dominance indexes (r = -0.984, p < 0.01, n = 66) in infracommunities. The Brillouin index was significant positive correlated with the number of parasites in infracommunity (r = 0.407, p < 0.01, n = 66) and with the number of species in infracommunity (r = 0.92, p < 0.01, n = 66). Berger-Parker dominance index was significant negative correlated with the number of parasite in infacommunity (r = -0.815, p < 0.01, n = 66) and with the number of species in infracommunity (r = -0.268, p < 0.05). Total number of parasites and the number of species in infracommunity was positive correlated significantly (r = 0.565, p < 0.01, n = 66). These correlations remain the same at the component community level for the Shannon/Berger-Parker indexes (r = -0.965, p < 0.01, n = 10) and total number of parasites/number of species (r = 0.789, p < 0.01, n = 10) only. Similarity index was not correlate with any other indexes and parameters. No significant correlation was found between the Brillouin, Berger-Parker indexes and geographical characters of localities (longitude, latitude, altitude above sea-level). Weak correlation (r = 0.551, p < 0.098, n = 10) was observed only between the Berger-Parker dominance index and the latitude. 37 metazoan parasites have been found in all localities (specialists--40%, allogenic species--22%, rare species--40%). Allogenic generalist species of the genus Diplostomum (D. phoxini in most cases) were dominant in 60% of the component communities and 36% of infracommunities on average. 20% of the component communities were dominant by autogenic specialists Gyrodactylus magnificus and only 12% of the infracommunities were dominated by this species. Trematode and nematode larvae were core species in most localities. Frequency distribution of infracommunity richness varied from locality to locality being overdispersed in combine sample. Parasite communities at least on the infracommunity level demonstrate high variability of all parameters. Some tendency to decrease the diversity seems to be present depending on remoteness from prospective centre of origin of the genus Phoxinus.  相似文献

In Iberian and Canarian lizards, haemogregarines have been recorded infecting erythrocytes, but most of the records correspond to mature gametocytes. We analysed blood smears from 75 specimens of Podarcis bocagei (Seoane) and 33 specimens of P. carbonelli (Pérez-Mellado) from localities of north-western Portugal. We found haemogregarines in 74.7% of P. bocagei and 69.7% of P. carbonelli. Our observations show characteristics of the haemogregarines other than the morphology of the mature gametocytes. In histological sections of the liver of four hosts latent cysts with sporozoites and meronts with merozoites were detected. Both traits have been described as typical of the genera Hepatozoon Miller, 1908 and Hemolivia Petit, Landau, Baccam & Lainson, 1990. We suggest that not only P. bocagei and P. carbonelli from Portugal but other species of Iberian and Canarian lacertids might also be infected by species belonging to one or both genera.  相似文献

During the summer of 1975, 285 white suckers (Catostomus commersoni) from 10 localities in southern Ontario were examined for trypanosomes. Trypanosoma catostomi Daly and DeGiusti, 1971 was found in the blood of 11.6% of the fish examined using the haematocrit centrifugation technique. Infected juvenile fish (33%) and infected adult fish (4%) were found in 6 of 10 locations.  相似文献

A characteristic electric organ discharge display in social encounters between mormyrid fish is a temporary discharge cessation. Using this response, we have investigated the useful range of electrocommunication under different water conductivity conditions in the mormyrid Brienomyrus niger. An individual fish was confined to a porous ceramic shelter tube and moved from a starting distance of 380 cm toward a similarly confined conspecific until discharge, cessation occurred. The moved fish was subsequently returned to its original, position. Water conductivity affects the peak-to-peak source voltage of the electric organ and the sensitivity of the fish's electroreceptors. Within a range of 10 to 36 000 μS/cm, the peak-to-peak amplitude of the electric organ discharge declined as a power function. At 120 μS/cm, the amplitude was 50%, and at 300μS/cm, 30% of the 10 μS/cm value. The interfish distance at which discharge cessation occurred and the associated electric field gradients were dependent on water conductivity and upon the spatial orientation of the two fish (end-to-end or parallel orientations of their shelter tubes). The respective ranges were from 135 cm and 0.02 mV/cm at 52 μS/cm (parallel orientation) to 22 cm and 0.36 mV/cm at 678 μS/cm (end-to-end orientation). When the data for both tube orientations were combined, the relationship between water conductivity (x) and the distance at which discharge cessation occurred (y) could be expressed by a power function, y=K·xa (with K=102.97 and a=?0.56). When an electrically ‘silent’ fish was moved away from its conspecific, a discharge resumption in the form of a high-frequency rebound occasionally effected changes in the other fish's discharge activity at distances up to 157 cm (with an associated electric, field gradient of 0.01 mV/cm under the lowest conductivity condition).  相似文献

The influence of hypoxia on the morphological characteristics of circulating erythrocytes of the scorpion fish Scorpaena porcus (Linnaeus, 1758) has been investigated in an in vivo experiment. Under a 4-h adaptation of the fish to the conditions of ranked hypoxia their erythrocytes demonstrated a number of consecutive reactions. The volume and the surface area of the red blood cells was reduced by 4–5% (p < 0.001) at an oxygen concentration of 2.6 mg/L (30% saturation of water with oxygen) and increased by 4% (p < 0.001) at a concentration of 1.3 mg/L (15% saturation), relative to the control values (normoxia: 7–8 mg/L). The observed reaction of erythrocytes coincided quantitatively and qualitatively (the order of events) with the results of the experiments we performed previously in vitro. Our study has shown that the physiology of the black scorpion fish is tolerant to hypoxia and allows autonomous functioning of red blood cells under conditions of oxygen deficit.  相似文献

We describe here the mass death of predatory carp, Chanodichthys erythropterus, in Korea induced by plerocercoid larvae of Ligula intestinalis as a result of host manipulation. The carcasses of fish with ligulid larvae were first found in the river-edge areas of Chilgok-bo in Nakdong-gang (River), Korea at early February 2016. This ecological phenomena also occurred in the adjacent areas of 3 dams of Nakdong-gang, i.e., Gangjeong-bo, Dalseong-bo, and Hapcheon-Changnyeong-bo. Total 1,173 fish carcasses were collected from the 4 regions. To examine the cause of death, we captured 10 wondering carp in the river-edge areas of Hapcheon-Changnyeong-bo with a landing net. They were 24.0-28.5 cm in length and 147-257 g in weight, and had 2-11 plerocercoid larvae in the abdominal cavity. Their digestive organs were slender and empty, and reproductive organs were not observed at all. The plerocercoid larvae occupied almost all spaces of the abdominal cavity under the air bladders. The proportion of larvae per fish was 14.6-32.1% of body weight. The larvae were ivory-white, 21.5-63.0 cm long, and 6.0-13.8 g in weight. We suggest that the preference for the river-edge in infected fish during winter is a modified behavioral response by host manipulation of the tapeworm larvae. The life cycle of this tapeworm seems to be successfully continued as the infected fish can be easily eaten by avian definitive hosts.  相似文献

The frequency of spontaneous micronucleus (MN) formation in fish species needs to be determined to evaluate their usefulness for genotoxic biomonitoring. The definition of a good bioindicator takes into account the current knowledge of its metabolic traits as well as other factors including its feeding behavior and relationship to the environment. In this study, we compared the basal frequencies of micronucleated erythrocytes and nuclear abnormalities (NA) among different species of the fish Order Gymnotiformes (Rhamphichthys marmoratus, Steatogenys elegans, Sternopygus macrurus, Parapteronotus hasemani, Gymnotus mamiraua, Gymnotus arapaima, Brachyhypopomus beebei, Brachyhypopomus n. sp. BENN) sampled in several localities of the Eastern Amazon. A baseline of MN and NA frequency in these fish was determined, enabling the identification of potentially useful species as models for genotoxicity studies. Only one impacted sample collected at a site in the River Caripetuba showed a significant number of NAs, which may be due to the release of wastewater by neighbouring mining industries and by the burnt fuel released by the small boats used by a local community. Our results may provide support for further studies in areas of the Eastern Amazon affected by mining, deforestation and other anthropogenic activities.  相似文献

Effect of inhibitors on glucose transport in malaria (Plasmodium berghei) infected erythrocytes. International Journal for Parasitology16: 441–446. The effect of cytochalasin B and phloretin on transport of d-glucose and 2-deoxy-d-glucose into Plasmodium berghei-infected mouse erythrocytes was studied. Both the inhibitor-sensitive and insensitive fractions of transport in the infected erythrocytes were increased compared with normal erythrocytes. The i50 values (concentrations of inhibitor producing 50% inhibition) were similar for both infected and normal erythrocytes, indicating that the binding affinities of the carrier were not substantially changed, but the turnover number, availability, or the number of the carrier may have increased in infection. There was a large increase in the transport of l-glucose into infected erythrocytes. Neither inhibitor showed any effect on transport of l-glucose into infected or normal erythrocytes. d-Galactose and d-fructose also showed a large transport increase mostly insensitive to cytochalasin B. The specificity of the transport increase raises the possibility of the presence of a new pathway other than simple diffusion, or the carrier-mediated pathway revealed by cytochalasin B or phloretin inhibition.  相似文献

Hyalomma aegyptium ticks were collected from tortoises, Testudo graeca, at localities in northern Africa, the Balkans, and the Near and Middle East. The intensity of infestation ranged from 1-37 ticks per tortoise. The sex ratio of feeding ticks was male-biased in all tested populations. Larger tortoises carried more ticks than did the smaller tortoises. The juveniles were either not infested, or carried only a poor tick load. Hyalomma aegyptium was absent in the western Souss Valley and Ourika Valley in Morocco, the Cyrenaica Peninsula in Libya, Jordan, and the Antilebanon Mountains in Syria. Hemolivia mauritanica, a heteroxenous apicomplexan cycling between T. graeca and H. aegyptium, was confirmed in Algeria, Romania, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Iran. Its prevalence ranged from 84% in Romania (n = 45), 82% in eastern Turkey (n = 28), and 82% in the area of northwestern Syria with adjacent Turkish borderland (n = 90), to 38% in Lebanon (n = 8) and in only 1 of 16 sampled tortoises in Algeria. The intensity of parasitemia in the studied areas ranged from 0.01% up to 28.17%. The percentage of Hemolivia-infected erythrocytes was significantly higher in adults. All tortoises from Hyalomma-free areas were Hemolivia-negative. Remarkably, all 29 T. graeca from Jabal Duruz (southwestern Syria) and 36 T. graeca from the area north of Middle Atlas (Morocco) were Hemolivia-negative, despite the fact that ticks parasitized all adult tortoises in these localities. Identical host preferences of H. aegyptium and H. mauritanica suggest the occurrence of co-evolution within the Testudo-Hyalomma-Hemolivia host-parasite complex.  相似文献

1. The effects of riffles as barriers to movement of stream fish was investigated in a set of eight large outdoor artificial streams. Pools were 183 cm in diameter and 45 cm deep; riffles were 183 cm long and 43 cm wide. Rates of movement of three species of minnows (Cyprinidae) (Campostoma anomalum, Cyprinella venusta and Notropis boops) among pools were measured at four riffle current velocities (0, 15, 30 and 45 cm s–1), three thalweg depths (10, 50 and 100 mm), two riffle lengths (183 and 549 cm), and with and without the threat of predation. Visual observation and video cameras were used to quantify movement rate. 2. Mean movement rate (percentage of fish crossing a riffle each 30 min) was 18.1% at 0 cm s–1 and only 1.8 at 45 cm s–1. Movement rate was 7.2% with no predators present and 20.2% with caged predators in pools. Notropis boops had a lower rate of movement than C. venusta or C. anomalum across all trials. The mean group size (number of individuals crossing a riffle together) was 1.2 fish overall, indicating most movement was by individuals and not groups. Group size was significantly greater only with shallow riffles or under the threat of predation. 3. Overall biotic and abiotic factors in these artificial streams do influence movement rates and may affect movement among pools in natural streams.  相似文献

Genetic variation in the mitochondrial (mt) 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene was examined for the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say, 1821). Nine different haplotypes were detected among 369 adult D. variabilis collected from four localities in Canada. There were eight variable nucleotide positions in the 404 bp sequence alignment. Individuals of haplotype 1 occurred at frequency of >75% at all localities. Five haplotypes were detected at only one of the four localities. High haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity, combined with significantly negative Fs values for ticks at three localities, suggest a recent population expansion. Genetic differences were found between populations at different localities, but a Mantel regression analysis revealed no association between genetic differences and geographical distances. There was also no association between tick haplotype and the prevalence of the bacterium, Rickettsia montanensis Weiss and Moulder, 1984, in D. variabilis among localities or on opposite sides of Blackstrap Lake (Saskatchewan). The 16S rDNA haplotypes from Canadian populations of D. variabilis formed a clade with those from the eastern and central U.S.A., to the exclusion of D. variabilis from geographically isolated populations in the western U.S.A. Although sample sizes for D. variabilis in the eastern U.S.A. are small, there may be genetic divergence between populations in Canada and those in the eastern U.S.A., which may have implications for studies on the pathogenic agents transmitted by D. variabilis to its hosts.  相似文献

The presence of the bothriocephalidean cestode Tetracampos ciliotheca Wedl, 1861 is reported from the gall bladders of the catfish Clarias anguillaris from Loumbila and Ziga reservoirs, Burkina Faso, in 2010–2011. Of the 159 specimens examined, 47 were infected. Mean intensity of infection was 4.3 parasites per infected host, the maximum was 22 tapeworms in the gall bladder and the mean abundance was 1.3 parasites. There was no significant difference between males and females or between the two localities. There was a positive relationship between fish size and the number of parasites in the gall bladder. This study provides further evidence of the presence of T. ciliotheca in the gall bladder, in which most tapeworms found were localised. Tapeworms were also found in the stomach and intestine, with prevalences of 1% and 16%, and mean infection intensities of 1 and 5.3, respectively.  相似文献

Summary

New distribution records for four fish species in the Waterberg mountains of the Transvaal were established during surveys since 1987–92. Clarias theodorae was previously reported from one locality each in the Waterberg and Soutpansberg. The current survey disclosed its presence at an additional 11 localities. In the Transvaal Opsaridium zambezense was previously only known from the eastern parts of the Province. The current survey revealed its presence at one locality in the Waterberg. Clarias theodorae and Opsaridium zambezense are regarded as threatened in South Africa. Barbus eutaenia (two populations in the Waterberg) and B. polylepis (one population in the Waterberg) have relatively wide distributions in the Transvaal but their presence in the Waterberg represent comparatively unique, isolated populations. All four species were only found in relatively small numbers. Droughts during the nineteen eighties, and a concurrent increase in farm weir construction and water abstraction, jeopardise the survival of these small fish populations. Extreme drought conditions during 1991/92 have exacerbated adverse conditions for fish survival even further due to a general cessation of stream flow.  相似文献

During a 2-year survey on external disease conditions of fish between January 1988 and December 1989, 0.2% of 40011 smelt, Osmerus eperlanus , from 30 stations in the German Wadden Sea and estuaries of tributary rivers, were infected with glochidia of the freshwater mussel Anodonta anatina . Seasonality was marked, with glochidia only being observed in March and April 1989, when prevalences were 37% and 15% respectively, in fish 10–20cm long at the most heavily infected site. A marked increase in prevalence in fish 15cm in length and longer, suggested that only temporarily resident spawning fish (as opposed to resident juveniles) were infected. Infection was almost exclusively restricted to the Eider estuary, where prevalence decreased with increasing salinity. It is concluded that the glochidia carried by smelt returning from their freshwater spawning sites in the Eider River to the sea would have died, thus representing a loss to the 1989 cohort of A. anatina from the Eider. The potential importance of the smelt– A. anatina relationship as indicator for the detection of (a) spawning mussel populations and of (b) possible ecological effects of climate changes is noted.  相似文献

Captive Hemigymnus melapterus exposed to large numbers of cultured juvenile parasitic isopods ( Gnathia sp.) had significantly lower haematocrit (median 27·62% ± 5·83% inter‐quartile range) than uninfected, control fish (median 32·73% ± 4·90%). This study is the first to show that juvenile Gnathia sp. reduce total blood volume in H. melapterus . The low haematocrit in infected fish was most likely due to plasma replacing erythrocytes lost as a result of isopods feeding on fish blood.  相似文献

We examined American redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla) for protozoan blood parasites on their wintering grounds to determine whether transmission of these parasites occurs prior to spring migration. A total of 73 blood smears from 37 birds were examined for presence and intensity of infection. Thirty-six birds were sampled in the fall, soon after arriving from northern breeding grounds, and the spring prior to departure. Two (5%) of the samples collected in the fall were positive for Haemoproteus fringillae and one (3%) had detectable infections of Trypanosoma avium. Individuals infected with H. fringillae were hatching year redstarts sampled in September and October. Intensity of infection was 78 and < 1 infected erythrocytes per 10,000 erythrocytes, respectively. None of the birds had detectable infections when resampled prior to spring migration the following March.  相似文献
