A total of 54 ovariectomized female guinea pigs were divided into three groups and tested six times at 2-week intervals for their responsiveness to exogenous ovarian hormones (3 days of 4 micrograms/kg estradiol benzoate plus 1 day of 0.4 mg/kg progesterone) or control injections (0.2 ml oil vehicle). Two weeks after ovariectomy, treatment with estradiol significantly reduced food intake and body weight, and also produced vaginal membrane rupture in 98.1% of the females. When tested for sexual behavior at 4, 6, and 8 hr after the progesterone injection, 29 of the subjects (53.7%) displayed lordosis in response to manual stimulation. Twelve weeks after ovariectomy, the effects of estradiol on food intake, body weight, and vaginal membrane condition had not diminished. However, the overall proportion of females from which lordosis could be elicited declined to 27.8%. Biweekly injections of estradiol benzoate plus progesterone to one of the groups of females did not prevent this decline in the sexual response. Based on these results, it was concluded that the observed reduction in behavioral lordosis does not represent a general decline in the responsiveness of ovariectomized guinea pigs to estrogenic stimulation, but may involve changes in their responsiveness to progesterone or in other mechanisms more specifically associated with sexual behavior.  相似文献

The effects of estrogen and progesterone on the social and sexual behavior of brown lemmings, Lemmus trimucronatus, were investigated. The behavior of hormone-treated and untreated ovariectomized females and sexually vigorous males was observed in six consecutive daily 5-min dyadic encounters. Sexual receptivity, as measured by lordosis, and other social behaviors including nasonasal contact, boxing postures, allogrooming, perineal investigation, and male mounting increased following 48 hr of exposure to daily injections of 0.5 μg estradiol benzoate (EB). Lordosis in EB-primed females was not facilitated or inhibited by short-term (4 hr) exposure to 0.5 mg progesterone (P). Long-term (greater than 24 hr) exposure to P apparently inhibited lordosis and other social behaviors in EB-treated females, although males continued to attempt to mount these females. In EB-treated females a dramatic increase in threat-leaps, directed by the female toward the male, was observed within 4 hr of P injection. Threat-leaps declined when P was withdrawn. Threat-leaps were also observed in ovariectomized females after prolonged exposure to P only (0.5 mg/day). Vaginal perforation and cornification were first apparent 48 hr after EB injection. P-alone treated ovariectomized females also showed vaginal perforation but cornified cells were infrequent and these animals did not show lordosis.  相似文献

Neonate‐directed care is rare in non‐avian reptiles, but female pitvipers attend their young for a period of time after birth. One of the primary functions of parental care is the protection of offspring from predators, and parents of diverse taxa are able to modulate their antipredator behavior in the presence of offspring. To test the hypothesis that the antipredator behavior of post‐parturient pitvipers is altered during neonate attendance, we conducted behavioral trials on female cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus) in which we measured female response to a simulated predator encounter. Cottonmouths were divided into three treatment groups: (1) post‐parturient, attending neonates; (2) post‐parturient, not attending neonates; and (3) non‐reproductive. All females were subjected to a second trial approximately 3 wk later, when females in Group 1 were no longer attending neonates. When mothers were attending offspring, they were more hesitant to engage the predator and exhibited more warning than aggressive behaviors once they did, relative to non‐attending and non‐reproductive females. When these same mothers were no longer attending offspring, they significantly increased their antipredator behavior by engaging the predator quickly and displaying more aggressive than warning behaviors. This change in behavior was not observed in post‐parturient females who did not have neonates present during either trial, nor was it observed in non‐reproductive females, indicating that the presence of neonates directly affected the antipredator behavior of attending females. We discuss hypotheses concerning the possible adaptive value of reduced antipredator behavior in female pitvipers attending neonates.  相似文献

Female stumptail macaques continue to copulate at moderate to high levels for years after gonadectomy. This study examined the extent to which sexual behavior of ovariectomized stumptail females was maintained by steroids of adrenal origin, and second, considered the possibility that ovarian fragments might have been left in situ following surgery. Daily injections of 0.1 mg of dexamethasone sodium phosphate suppressed serum cortisol, estradiol, and testosterone by at least 85% in three of four ovariectomized females, but dihydrotestosterone was suppressed by only 50 to 70%. The fourth female showed maximal suppression of cortisol but maintained much higher levels of the other steroids, in particular estradiol, and therefore it was strongly suspected that this animal had an ovarian fragment.Within the limits to which sex steroids were depressed with dexamethasone, no correlation was found between steroid levels and sexual performance. Ejaculatory frequencies and measures of attractivity, proceptivity, and receptivity collected during heterosexual pair tests remained unaffected in all four females during 4 weeks of dexamethasone treatment. Thus it was concluded that the maintenance of copulatory activity after ovariectomy in this species was largely due to nonsteroidal mechanisms.  相似文献

In a number of marsupial species, females exhibit characteristic, stereotyped parturient behavior that facilitates the passage of the neonates to the pouch. In macropodids, this parturient behavior can be induced in non-pregnant females and males by treatment with either prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) or oxytocin (OT). This study investigated the effects of PGF2alpha and OT on behavior of Tasmanian devils. Animals tended to sit or lie down quickly, with little vocalization, after treatment with PGF2alpha or OT, while after saline, the animals remained alert, seldom sat, and frequently vocalized. Hormone treatment caused increased respiration. Urogenital and pouch grooming, a characteristic element of parturient behavior in macropodids, was seen in only one devil after hormone treatment. However, no pouch or urogenital grooming was seen in videotape of a devil giving birth, so this may not be a feature of parturient behavior in this species. Overall behavior of males and females was very similar suggesting that the behavioral effects observed may be due to direct neural action of PGF2alpha or OT, rather than an indirect response to uterine or vaginal contractions caused by the hormones. This study is the first to demonstrate that OT results in PGF2alpha secretion as PGFM levels rose after OT injection.  相似文献

Lordosis behavior in response to a mounting stimulation was quantified in ovariectomized female CD-1 and SW mice primed with estradiol benzoate and either progesterone or dihydroprogesterone. Both progestins were effective in stimulating receptivity, in CD-1 females, while only progesterone was effective in SW females. Dihydrotestosterone given concurrently with both the estrogen and progestin injections was found to have no effect on progesterone stimulated receptivity, but it produced a dose related inhibition of receptivity in the dihydroprogesterone treated females.  相似文献

Two experiments assessed the effects of neonatal testosterone treatment on paced mating behavior and conditioned place preference in female rats. In both experiments, females received s.c. injections of 5.0 microg testosterone propionate or oil vehicle at three days postpartum. As adults, females were ovariectomized and given s.c. injections of 10 microg estradiol benzoate and 500 microg progesterone, 48 and 4 h before mating, respectively. In Experiment 1, TP- and Oil-treated females exhibited similar high levels of lordosis responsiveness, but TP-treated females showed increased intervals between mounts and between intromissions in paced and non-paced mating conditions compared to control females. The effect was particularly pronounced during paced mating, when contact return latencies were increased approximately 2-fold by TP treatment. TP-treated females showed exaggerated pacing behavior, showing significantly greater return latencies after intromissions than Oil-treated females. In Experiment 2, TP- and Oil-treated groups were tested in a conditioned place preference paradigm to determine if the behavioral changes observed in Experiment 1 were in part a result of changes in the perceived reward produced by paced mating. TP treated and control females developed equivalent preferences for places associated with paced but not non-paced mating, indicating that neonatal TP treatment at this dosage does not disrupt or enhance the conditioned place preference induced by paced mating. The results of the two experiments demonstrate that neonatal TP treatment alters the display of pacing behavior but not the reward state induced by paced mating, and suggest that TP affects neural substrates involved in performance of paced mating without effects on those controlling lordosis or place preference conditioning.  相似文献

Adult male rats have been demonstrated to increase food intake in response to administration of drugs that interfere with oxidation of fatty acids (e.g. methyl palmoxirate and mercaptoacetate [MA]), effects that are larger in animals maintained on a high-fat diet. In contrast, while administration of MA has been reported to stimulate food intake in pre-pubertal female rats, food intake is not stimulated by MA in adult female rats. Instead, administration of MA to adult females results in changes in reproductive behavior and physiology. The present experiments were designed to examine the effects of administration of MA on food intake in adult female rats. The results demonstrated that, as previously reported, food intake was stimulated by MA in adult male rats on low-fat and high-fat diets, but food intake was not stimulated by MA in gonadally-intact adult female rats on either low-fat or high-fat diet. Further, MA did not stimulate food intake in female rats ovariectomized as adults. However, when females were ovariectomized prior to the onset of puberty (postnatal day 25–28), food intake was stimulated by administration of MA in adulthood. Finally, cyclic injections of 17-β-estradiol benzoate given to females ovariectomized prior to the onset of puberty abolished the stimulatory effects of MA on food intake in adult females. Taken together, the data suggest that exposure to estrogens during the time of puberty in female rats can persistently alter adult ingestive responding to signals related to changes in energy utilization.  相似文献

Lordosis behavior and behavioral patterns indicative of sexual receptivity or nonreceptivity were evaluated in 3- and 25-month-old female rats. Intact, 25-month-old females revealing a pattern of prolonged vaginal cornification (PVC) were highly receptive, whereas 25-month-old pseudopregnant (PL) females were nonreceptive. These measures did not differ as a result of previous sexual experience (i.e., sexually naive vs retired breeders). Following ovariectomy, sexual behavior persisted significantly longer in 25-month-old PVC females than in 3-month-old females ovariectomized during vaginal proestrus. No difference was observed in the rate at which the vaginal smears of 25-month-old PVC and young ovariectomized females became leukocytic. When tested 5, 19, and 20 days after ovariectomy, sexual behavior was absent in all females. Following treatment with estradiol benzoate (0.5 or 1.0 μg/kg), the latency for the reappearance of sexual behavior in 25-month-old females was significantly shorter than that in similarly treated 3-month-old females. This was the case regardless of prior ovarian condition (PVC or PL) and breeding experience. In addition, the mean lordosis quotient (LQ) of 25-month-old females receiving either dose of EB was significantly greater than that of similarly treated 3-month-old females on at least 5 days of a 10-day treatment period. These results are discussed in terms of possible age-related changes in central and peripheral estrogen metabolism.  相似文献

Sexual receptivity in the female scincid lizard Eumeces laticeps occurs naturally only during the spring breeding season, which is also when maximal follicular development occurs. The presumption that high estrogen levels are coincidentally present and the need for a reliable method of inducing sexual receptivity for behavioral studies prompted tests of the hypothesis that estrogen induces sexual behavior. A series of experiments established that estradiol-17 beta induces sexual behavior. A series of experiments established that estradiol-17 beta induces sexual receptivity within 4 days when injected every other day at 2.0 micrograms in 20 microliters peanut oil in intact or ovariectomized females. In behavioral tests conducted during August, all control females (intact or ovariectomized injected with vehicle only) rejected courtship whereas all females receiving estrogen copulated. Estrogen injections also induced a statistically significant change from rejection to receptivity within individuals. Initial attempts to implant estradiol-17 beta in Silastic tubes killed all females so treated.  相似文献

Behavioral studies of an XY gonadal dysgenetic chacma baboon prior to and during testosterone propionate treatment were carried out. The orchidectomized dysgenetic individual, two intact males, a castrate male, and two ovariectomized females were pair-tested with a group of eight ovariectomized stimulus females prior to and during their treatment with estradiol benzoate. Three test series were carried out. One series occurred prior to any treatment of the agonadal focal subject animals. During this series it was only the intact males who showed behavior change during their testing with the estrogen treated females. A second test series occurred after a month of daily testosterone propionate injections (1 mg/kg/day) had been given to the four agonadal subjects. During this test series the castrate male ejaculated once with one of the estrogen-treated females. All of the treated subjects showed increases in their frequency of yawning. Upon completion of this test series the androgen dosage was increased (2 mg/kg/day) and 2 weeks later a third test series was carried out. During this series the castrate male ejaculated with five of his eight estrogen-treated partners. The yawning of all the treated subjects continued. As had been the case in the second series the XY gonadal dysgenetic individual continued to behave as did the ovariectomized females. None of these animals showed any increase in any measure of male sexual behavior. This study establishes the fact that a genetic male primate deprived of in utero exposure to testicular hormones will go on to develop as a normal genetic female and will fail to exhibit increased levels of male sexual behavior during androgen treatment.  相似文献

Groups of sexually inexperienced adult Clun Forest sheep (four animals per group) which had been castrated on the day after birth received one of the following treatments: testosterone propionate (TP, 20 mg/day); estradiol dipropionate (ODP, 2 mg/day); 19-hydroxy-17, 19-dipropionate (19HTP, 20 mg/day); dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP, 20 mg/day); or arachis oil vehicle (OIL). Treatments were in the form of sc injections given 5 days/week over a 6-week period during which time individual animals were observed in 18 tests for sexual behavior. The stimulus females used were ovariectomized ewes maintained in a state of continuous receptivity by daily injections of 15 mg of TP. Various measures of sexual and aggressive behavior were recorded during each test. Mounting was induced mainly in animals in the TP group and to a lesser extent in those receiving ODP. The extent to which precopulatory courtship was induced followed the order TP > ODP > 19HTP. Animals treated with DHTP or OIL showed negligible sexual activity.  相似文献

Daily administration over a period of 6 weeks of increasing doses of dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DEX) to seven long-term ovariectomized female stumptail monkeys significantly lowered circulating levels of testosterone without reducing any aspect of the females' sexual behavior or that of their male partners. Since treatment with DEX failed to suppress serum testosterone levels completely an additional experiment was performed in which the sexual behavior of five ovariectomized stumptails was compared before and after bilateral adrenalectomy, combined with chronic administration of both gluco- and mineralocorticoids. Serum levels of both testosterone and estradiol were reduced to very low levels in females after ovariectomy and adrenalectomy, yet no significant depression of females' sexual performance or that of their male partners occurred. Subsequent sc administration of estradiol or estradiol + testosterone in Silastic capsules to ovariectomized, adrenalectomized stumptails had little effect on sexual interaction. In a third experiment five ovariectomized stumptails which initially were relatively unreceptive and unattractive to males were given first testosterone and then testosterone + estradiol sc in Silastic capsules. One of the three indexes of females' receptivity increased significantly after testosterone; however, no other essential aspect of sexual interaction was affected. These findings suggest that sex steroids are normally not required in the female stumptail macaque for activation of preceptive and receptive sexual behaviors or for maintenance of sexual attractivity.  相似文献

Mounting behavior by female rats with regular 4-day estrous cycles was significantly reduced after the induction of pregnancy, pseudopregnancy, or treatment with progesterone. The mounting behavior shown by pseudopregnant female rats was comparable to that shown by ovariectomized females. Pseudopregnant and unmated females showed mounts with pelvic thrusting with the same frequency after treatment with estradiol benzoate (EB). EB stimulated the display of mounts with pelvic thrusting in ovariectomized females, and this behavior was not affected by concurrent progesterone treatment. It is suggested that the reduction of mounting in pregnant and pseudopregnant female rats is due to decreased ovarian estrogen secretion.  相似文献

A series of experiments investigated masculine response potential in normal BDF1 female mice and in females who had been injected with 100 μg of testosterone propionate on the day of birth. Sixty-five percent of BDF1 females mounted females in estrus; ovariectomy lowered this response potential while injections of TP in adulthood raised masculine RP in both ovariectomized and intact females. Neonatally androgenized females with or without TP in adulthood exhibited the full range of masculine responses including the ejaculatory reflex. Comparisons of elements of sexual behavior are made between neonatally androgenized females and normal males.  相似文献

Adult female house mice that had been living in groups inflicted more wounds upon juvenile opponents than did females that had been housed in isolation. Ovariectomy blocked this enhancement of aggression by grouping. Aggression in ovariectomized females was augmented by treatment with testosterone propionate, but not by treatment with estradiol benzoate or progesterone. Preputial gland size was greater in group-housed females than in isolates; this difference was abolished by ovariectomy. Testosterone proprionate, but not estradiol benzoate or progesterone stimulated preputial gland growth in ovariectomized mice. These results are interpreted as supporting the hypothesis that the groupinginduced enhancement of juvenile-directed aggression in female mice is mediated by an increased secretion of ovarian androgens.  相似文献

Behavior, sex steroid levels and sex skin color were monitored in 2 out-door-housed all-female groups of rhesus monkeys during the nonbreeding season and into the breeding period. Each group contained gonadally intact and ovariectomized (OVX) females. In one group, 2 OVX females were implanted with estradiol benzoate pellets. Female-to-female sexual behavior, sex skin redness and endocrine indices of ovulation (in intact females) all increased as the breeding season approached. The two groups did not differ with regard to these measures. This lack of difference suggests that the presence of males may be required to mediate socially facilitated out-of-season breeding by females. No strong relationships were detected between steroid levels of intact females and sex skin color or female-to-female sexual behavior in all-female groups.  相似文献

Testosterone-induced aggression in adult female mice   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Silastic implants of testosterone (T) and injections of testosterone propionate (TP) were used to study the effects of ovariectomy and androgen administration on the fighting behavior of adult female mice. A dose of T previously shown to hyperstimulate accessory organ growth in adult male castrates was sufficient to induce the complete behavioral repertoire of male-like aggression in females never before treated with exogenous androgen. As determined by radioimmunoassay, blood levels of T produced by implants containing an aggression-inducing dose of T (10-mg implant) were within the range of T concentrations observed in intact males. Following treatment with a 10-mg T implant, the aggressive behavior of ovariectomized females could be fully maintained with a dose of T (0.3-mg implant) that failed to maintain weight of the accessory organs in adult male castrates. In fact, females “androgenized” were subsequently more responsive to the aggression-activating properties of T than were males castrated after prenatal and perinatal androgen exposure.  相似文献

Three experiments were performed to analyze the time course of demasculinization in the Japanese quail and to test the activating and organizing effects of estradiol (E2) in adult sexually active birds. In Experiment 1, males and females were castrated at the age of 1 day or 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks and treated as adults with testosterone (T). The age of castration had no effect on behavior and morphology in males. Plasma gonadotrophins (LH and FSH) were, however, higher in males castrated at or before than in those castrated after 2 weeks of age. This suggests that postnatal testicular secretions have organizing effects on the pituitary activity. Females which were castrated before 1 week of age were less sensitive to the activating effects of T than males, but were not fully demasculinized. The demasculinization of different reproductive characteristics such as male sexual behavior, cloacal gland size, and weight of the syringeal muscles is achieved in females at different times posthatching. In Experiment 2, castration of male and female quail at the ages of 4 days or 4 weeks confirmed that postnatal ovarian secretions contribute to the full behavioral and morphological demasculinization of females. It is easier to elicit mounting in T-treated females when they are tested in their home cage instead of a test arena. This difference was not observed in males. During Experiment 3, it was impossible to demasculinize sexually active adult males or females by treatment with Silastic implants of E2. E2 did not maintain sexual behavior in ovariectomized females showing male sexual behavior when treated with T but maintained the behavior in males.  相似文献

The role of endogenous opioid peptides (EOPs) on LH secretion was examined to investigate the neuronal mechanisms responsible for the inhibition of GnRH and the resultant infertility in nonreproductive female Damaraland mole-rats, Cryptomys damarensis. The endorphin antagonist naloxone was administered to five groups of females to determine its effect on plasma LH levels: Grouping was determined by social status, social environment, and whether the females were ovariectomized. A single injection of naloxone had no significant effect on LH secretion in either intact or hystero-ovariectomized females. Multiple injections with naloxone failed to affect basal LH concentrations but did result in a decrease in GnRH-stimulated LH secretion in ovariectomized nonreproductive and reproductive females. A significant response to a single naloxone injection following GnRH priming was obtained in both nonreproductive females and in nonreproductive females housed in the absence of the reproductive pair. These results suggest EOPs play a role in sexual function but that socially induced infertility is unlikely to be mediated through the EOP system.  相似文献
