The history of eutrophication of the Loosdrecht Lakes system and the differences in trophic state of the compartments of this system are described from a hydrological point of view. Groundwater movement was found to be of paramount importance. This groundwater transport induced a horizontal surface water transport with concomitant biomass from Loosdrecht Lakes to Lake Breukeleveen, which explains partly the more eutrophic situation in the latter lake. The article summarizes several internal WOL-reports (ENGELEN and KAL, 1985; HETTLING, 1985a, b; KUHNEL, 1985; TEUNISSEN, 1985).  相似文献

The primary production of the Loosdrecht Lakes, L. Breukeleveen and L. Vuntus is described. A comparison is made between the values found in 1983 (a year with a considerable inlet of phosphorus-rich water, and those of 1984 (when the inlet water was dephosphorized). Production rates in L. Breukeleveen and L. Vuntus were significantly lower than in the Loosdrecht Lakes. This was partly ascribed to horizontal mass transport. The annual production in 1984 was not significantly lower than in 1983.  相似文献

Ecosystem research by the working group Water Quality Research Loosdrecht lakes (WQL) was carried out from 1979 to 1990. A coordinated research programme, involving several research institutes and laboratories in The Netherlands, was initiated in 1983, i.e. a year before the reduction of external phosphorus loading by stripping, became effective. In 1984 the external phosphorus load to the Loosdrecht lakes ecosystem was decreased substantially. A working group, Water Quality research Loosdrecht lakes (WQL), was formed to study the consequences for recovery of the lakes, and to evaluate the water management measures taken. Its history from the start in 1979 is described. The working group had an interdisciplinary character; its organization structure (project management) is depicted. From March 1983 a coordinate multidisciplinary research programme was started, carried out uninterrupted up to December 1990. The programme paid special attention to the flow of phosphorus through the lake ecosystems. The results were presented at several international conferences. The WQL was also involved in the international working group ERiFER (Ecosystem Research in Freshwater Environment Recovery). Important financial support was given by Dutch ministries, the Commission of European Communities, regional water authorities, and private funds.The measures taken to counteract eutrophication were not successful. It has been the task of the WQL to explain the ecosystem resilience.  相似文献

The Project on the Water Quality Research in the Loosdrecht Lakes (WQL) has come up to the expectations of the Netherlands Environment Ministry. The results reaffirm the main lines of national eutrophication policy drawn up in 1979 (Policy Document on Phosphates) and further developed in the eighties. Interesting new insights have been gained, for example into the role of sediment and seston as well as into the relative importance of trophic levels. It is not possible, however, to definitely establish the effect of WQL on eutrophication policy.The Loosdrecht project is an example of genuine ecological research, incorporating several disciplines, placing the object of research into its surroundings, emphasising the relation nature-culture and committing itself to certain value judgements and policy choices. As a consequence, there is a striking resemblance between the evolution of the project itself and that of ecosystems.All in all the Loosdrecht project should be regarded as a paradigm for future ecosystem studies.  相似文献

Visual observations and experiments on food preference of Euchlanis dilatata lucksiana show that this euchlanid can feed on blue-green algae not consumed by the most planktonic animals. Nevertheless, even in lakes with blooms of blue-green algae, E. d. lucksiana occur infrequently and generally in low numbers. The paper is an attempt to explore into the causes for the rare occurrence of Euchlanis in the pelagial. A comparison of threshold food concentrations calculated from N and P excretion rates (Gulati et al., this volume) with the concentrations of seston in the Lake Loosdrecht shows that the latter were several times higher during study period in 1984. This implies that the food requirements of Euchlanis were always satisfied in this lake. The time needed for the consumption of the total food fraction in a liter of lake water by a concentration of 50 Euchlanis l–1 was also calculated. This time varied from 70 to 200 days, so a Euchlanis population even at its maximum density will not cause major changes in blue-green algae biomass by grazing. Thus, food limitation cannot be viewed as a factor controlling the Euchlanis densities in Loosdrecht Lakes. There is some evidence that Euchlanis is heavily predated in Loosdrecht Lakes, losses in its biomass accounting for 126% of the production. Adaptation of this species to the littoral zone, as expressed by the deposition of eggs on plants, can also limit the occurrence of the lucksiana form to water bodies with blooms of blue-green algae.  相似文献

A first step in modelling plankton growth in the Loosdrecht Lakes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In this paper a dynamic model is presented to simulate plankton growth in the Loosdrecht Lakes. The present, first step version of the model, contains only one algal super-species and incorporates fairly standard formulations for the effects of light irradiance, the extinction coefficient of the water, temperature and the phosphate levels on algal growth. Grazing by zooplankton and detritus dynamics (non-living particulate organic material) are considered essential parts of the carbon cycle. The total phosphorus concentration is used as a timevariable forcing function, which transforms the problem of predicting future water quality levels into the problem of predicting future total phosphorus levels. This requires a separate estimation procedure. However, both types of estimation should be and can be integrated into one single water quality model.The Loosdrecht Lakes seem P-limited in summer. Re-adjustment of certain constants is necessary to simulate Lake Breukeleveen, which differs from the Loosdrecht Lakes in certain characteristics. It is hypothesized that some form of phosphorus cell-quota dynamics may solve this problem. Furthermore, it is discussed as to what extent the hydrological interactions between the Loosdrecht Lakes and Lake Breukeleveen may have caused the differences observed and how this matter could be evaluated through simulation.  相似文献

In two laboratory-scale enclosures of water from the shallow, eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht (the Netherlands), the predominating filamentous cyanobacteria grew vigorously for 2 weeks, but then their populations simultaneously collapsed, whereas coccoid cyanobacteria and algae persisted . The collapse coincided with a short peak in the counts of virus-like particles. Transmission electron microscopy showed the morphotype Myoviridae phages, with isometric heads of about 90 nm outer diameter and >100-nm long tails, that occurred free, attached to and emerging from cyanobacterial cells. Also observed were other virus-like particles of various morphology. Similar mass mortality of the filamentous cyanobacteria occurred in later experiments, but not in Lake Loosdrecht. As applies to lakes in general, this lake exhibits high abundance of virus-like particles. The share and dynamics of infectious cyanophages remain to be established, and it is as yet unknown which factors primarily stabilize the host–cyanophage relationship. Observations on shallow, eutrophic lakes elsewhere indicate that the cyanophage control may also fail in natural water bodies exhibiting predominance of filamentous cyanobacteria. Rapid supply of nutrients appeared to be a common history of mass mortality of cyanobacteria and algae in laboratory and outdoor enclosures as well as in highly eutrophic lakes. We investigated the causes of high mortality, using four variables: water volume, animal density, light intensity, and origin of water for culturing, i.e., water from native or a non-native lake. For the experiments we used Leptodora and water from Lake Loosdrecht and Lake Maarsseveen (The Netherlands). Water was found to be the most important factor; the animals did not necessarily do better in lake water from which they were collected. Walker Lake, a large terminal lake in west-central Nevada, is rapidly desiccating and becoming more saline. From 1937 to 1977, total dissolved solids increased from 5 650 to 10 650 mg l–1. Ionically, the lake is a chlorocarbonate one; however, as desiccation continues it should eventually have about equal amounts of chloride, sulfate and carbonate. With regard to algal nutrients, the lake appears to be nitrogen limited. The phytoplankton is currently dominated by Nodularia spumigena; at times this produces noxious blooms. The zooplankton community is depauperate and composed of three species. The fish fauna is limited to three endemic fishes, with tui chub, Gila bicolor, dominant. Lahontan cutthroat trout, Salmo clarki henshawi, is restricted during summer to a narrow mid-water zone low enough in temperature and high enough in dissolved oxygen to meet physiological requirements.Dr. Koch passed away in October 1983.  相似文献

The content and calibration of the comprehensive generic 3D eutrophication model ECO for water and sediment quality is presented. Based on a computational grid for water and sediment, ECO is used as a tool for water quality management to simulate concentrations and mass fluxes of nutrients (N, P, Si), phytoplankton species, detrital organic matter, electron acceptors and related substances. ECO combines integral simulation of water and sediment quality with sediment diagenesis and closed mass balances. Its advanced process formulations for substances in the water column and the bed sediment were developed to allow for a much more dynamic calculation of the sediment-water exchange fluxes of nutrients as resulting from steep concentration gradients across the sediment-water interface than is possible with other eutrophication models. ECO is to more accurately calculate the accumulation of organic matter and nutrients in the sediment, and to allow for more accurate prediction of phytoplankton biomass and water quality in response to mitigative measures such as nutrient load reduction. ECO was calibrated for shallow Lake Veluwe (The Netherlands). Due to restoration measures this lake underwent a transition from hypertrophic conditions to moderately eutrophic conditions, leading to the extensive colonization by submerged macrophytes. ECO reproduces observed water quality well for the transition period of ten years. The values of its process coefficients are in line with ranges derived from literature. ECO’s calculation results underline the importance of redox processes and phosphate speciation for the nutrient return fluxes. Among other things, the results suggest that authigenic formation of a stable apatite-like mineral in the sediment can contribute significantly to oligotrophication of a lake after a phosphorus load reduction.  相似文献

1. Body condition (defined as the relative amount of energy reserves in the body) is an animal trait with strong ecological implications. In some animal taxa (e.g. arthropods), the external volume of the body part in which most nutrients are stored (e.g. abdomen) is used interchangeably with body mass to estimate body condition, making the implicit assumption that abdomen residual volume is a good surrogate of residual mass. However, the degree of correlation between these two measures should largely depend on the density of the nutrients stored. 2. We simulated two food-supplemented experimental groups of animals, each storing a slightly different amount of lipids either in their abdomens or in their entire bodies, and explored (i) how different estimates of condition were able to detect fixed differences between the groups; and (ii) how the amount of lipids stored could affect the outcome of non-intrusive measures of condition on a dichotomous variable (e.g. survival, mating success). We found that density body condition (body mass statistically controlled for structural body size and body volume) has much greater power to detect differences between experimental groups or effects on binary response variables than do classic mass/size or volume/size condition indices. 3. Using data on Lycosa tarantula (L.), a burrowing wolf spider, we report dramatic differences among these three indices in their ability to detect sex differences in the effect of feeding treatment on body condition at maturity. In particular, a plot of residual mass against residual volume reflecting nutrient density suggests that poorly fed spiders are nutritionally unbalanced, since well-fed spiders invest in nutrients of very different density. 4. Furthermore, using data on Scathophaga stercoraria (L.), the yellow dung fly, we found that an index of density condition was better at distinguishing condition differences among three populations than were mass or volume condition estimates alone. 5. We propose that including these three surrogates of condition (mass, volume and density) will substantially improve the accuracy of non-intrusive estimates of body condition, thus providing more powerful tools with direct application in a wide range of disciplines.  相似文献

Remote sensing as a tool for assessing water quality in Loosdrecht lakes   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1  
The underwater light field in 7 lakes in the Loosdrecht lake area was measured in situ. Subsurface upwelling irradiance and irradiance reflectance, together with estimations of scattering and laboratory measurements of absorption by aquatic humus and particulate matter, enabled an analysis of the spectral signature of these waters. Aircraft imaging spectrometer measurements of upwelling radiance at 1 km altitude were used to simulate the PMI Chlorophyll #1, the CAESAR Inland Water Mode spectral bandsets and the Thematic Mapper bands 1 to 4. This made it possible to compare the effects of spectral band width and selection on the estimation of water quality parameters. Correlations increased to r > 0.94, at a significance level of 1% for the simulated C-IWM data with the 6 water quality parameters. Images of the PMI Chlorophyll #1 and of the TM were analysed and found to be in accordance with the statistical modelling results.A significant increase in correlation of remote sensing data with water quality parameters can be achieved through the selective use of 10 to 20 nm wide bands in the spectral range of 500 to 720 nm in these eutrophic waters. Sum of chlorophyll a and phaeopigments, seston dry weight, Secchi disc transparency, and coefficients for vertical attenuation of light, absorption and scattering can be estimated accurately. TM image data for water quality assessment is of limited use due to the relatively low spectral and radiometric resolution. The potential importance of the six major emergent and floating-leaved macrophyte species in recycling of sediment phosphorus in the Loosdrecht lakes was studied. Representative plant samples were collected at the time of maximum biomass, and analysed for biomass and carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus contents. Species cover was determined by aerial photography.Total cover in the seven lakes studied ranged between 2 and 26 percent. For the four main species, biomass per unit area increased with lake trophic status. Consistent differences in C, N and P contents per unit biomass were not observed. Although cover values were small, significant amounts of C, N and P were contained in the macrophytes when compared with maximum sestonic content.Potential P loads from macrophyte decay were calculated. In Lake Loosdrecht, the P load represented 15 percent of current external P inputs. The potential importance of macrophyte decay to P recycling in the other lakes is greater.Decay of macrophyte species at the end of the growing season appears to affect autumnal nutrient and chlorophyll a levels in the water column of some lakes. The re-establishment of submerged species following lake restoration may increase the importance of this pathway in the lakes.  相似文献

Reduction of the external phosphorus load in 1984 did not lead to recovery of Loosdrecht lakes. Therefore the Provincial Water Authorities of the Province of Utrecht proposed, after consulting the research group Water Quality Research Loosdrecht lakes (WQL), measures to reduce the present external phosphorus loading from 0.35 to 0.1 g Pm–2y–1. Mathematical modelling suggested that such a reduction would benefit the water quality of the lakes. The results of the WQL investigation did not lead to additional measures (dredging, biomanipulation, chemomanipulation).  相似文献

The abundance and relative importance of autotrophic picoplankton were investigated in two lakes of different trophic status. In the eutrophic lake, measurements of primary production were performed on water samples in situ and in a light incubator three times during the day whereas for the oligotrophic lake, only one measurement of primary production was performed on water samples in the incubator. Dark-carbon losses of phytoplankton from Lake Loosdrecht were investigated in time series. Cell numbers of autotrophic picoplankton in eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht (3.2 × 104 cells ml–1) were lower than in meso-oligotrophic Lake Maarsseveen (9.8 and 11.4 × 104 cells ml–1 at the surface and bottom respectively). In the phytoplankton of both lakes the ratio of picoplankton production increased with decreasing light intensity. In Lake Loosdrecht depth-integrated contribution of picoplankton to total photosynthesis was less than 4%. The P-I-relationship showed diurnal variations in light saturated photosynthesis, while light limited carbon uptake remained constant during the day. Dark carbon losses from short-term labelled phytoplankton during the first 12 hours of the night period accounted for 10–25% of material fixed during the preceeding light period.  相似文献
