The population of the Père David's deer or milu (Elaphurus davidianus), which was discovered in China by Père Armand David in 1866, has grown from five, or even merely three individuals, imported from China to approximately 5000 during a time-span of 140 years. We tried to find out more about the origin of the 18 individuals which formed the original herd of the 11th Duke of Bedford at Woburn Abbey. His breeding-group was the only safeguard for this species between the years 1900 and 1946. Of the 18 individuals three were offspring of Berlin Zoo, three originated from Cologne Zoo and probably all the rest came from the Jardin d‘Acclimatation in Paris. The origin of the breeding herd at the Jardin d‘Acclimatation is not clear. The first individuals either came from Berlin Zoo or were imported directly from China in the years between 1876 and 1886. In Berlin Zoo's breeding records there is a remarkable gap for the years 1879 and 1880. If they came from Berlin Zoo, the imported male and two females would be the sole founders of the herd, and if the Jardin d‘Acclimatation had done an own import, then there would be at least five founders. At Berlin Zoo at least 18 milu calves were born between the years 1878 and 1895. The final destinations of most of these could be traced in literature. Some of them are not quite conclusive yet. We sketched the development of the worldwide zoo-stock of Père David's deer, the return to China and the re-settlement in the original habitat in newly established reserves and finally even outside the reserves. After centuries the milu has again gained the status of a free-living species thanks to the efforts of several zoological gardens, the Dukes of Bedford and the Chinese conservation authorities.  相似文献

In this article I use an ethnographic approach to consider the causes and consequences of a focus on ‘survivor’ experience in Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) on Indian residential schools. In this Truth Commission, the interconnected concepts of ‘survivor’, ‘cultural genocide’, ‘trauma’, and ‘healing’ became reference points for much of the testimony that was presented and the ways the schools were represented. Canada's Truth Commission thus offers an example of the consequences of ‘victim centrism’, including the ways that ‘truth‐telling’ can be influenced by the affirmation of particular survivor experiences and the wider goal of reforming the dominant historical narrative of the state through public education. Canada's TRC was limited by its mandate to a particular kind of institution and scope of collective harm. It was at the same time active in its creation of narrative templates, which guided the expression of traumatic personal experience and affirmed the category of residential school ‘survivor’ as the focal point for understanding policy‐driven loss of language, tradition, and political integrity.  相似文献

Many decades after the publication of Genesis and development of a scientific fact, Fleck’s collective Denkstil remains a very important notion for analyzing the history of the biological and medical sciences. Following Fleck’s perspective this paper argues that the history of the sex hormones was critically shaped by our representation of the sexes, and our perceptions of the division of reproductive labor. Emerging at the boundary between physiological laboratories and consultation room, a molecular/endocrine style of thought stabilized during the early decades of the twentieth century around the manipulation of sex hormones. This not only proved important in normalizing the sexual body, but also in defining sterility, menstrual disorders or menopause as pathological events to be treated ‘causally’.Analyzing the role played by industrial companies like the German firm Schering which produced these drugs, the paper suggests that the idea of a work style may be a convenient way to complement Fleck’s style of thought. First, the idea of work style is a reminder that science involves material action, which has strong links with industrial production. Second, it draws our attention to a deeply entrenched goal of the modern biosciences, the search for means to control the variability of the living, and standardize its uses.  相似文献

The variety described in this paper is rather a rare and interesting one. Locally called ‘endong’, this was discovered first in a farm in Tawi-Tawi, Sulu Archipelago, Philippines. During harvest, seaweed farmers used to mix this with ‘tambalang’ (Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty ex Silva var. tambalang Doty, the ‘cottonii’ of commerce) because of the presumption of it producing the same carrageenan type as that of ‘tambalang’, viz., kappa-carrageenan. The two farmed varieties are similar in appearance. Complaints arose from seaweed processing plants when the resulting gelling properties (hard and brittle gel) expected of the kappa-carrageenan-producing ‘tambalang’ were not met. Because of its lax habit and long, smooth, and naked basal axes, ‘endong’ was initially thought to be related to ‘tambalang’ and differ from the farmed ‘spinosum’ (Eucheuma denticulatum (Burman) Collins & Hervey) whose typical or common form has shorter axes covered from base to apex with spinous determinate (ramuli) or indeterminate branchlets arranged irregularly and in whorls at predictable interval. However, a closer look at ‘endong’ shows that it also has spinous branchlets arranged in whorls, but confined to the apical portion of the branches. Moreover, its internal axial anatomy shows rhizoidal filaments forming a core. Both characters fit well the distinguishing taxonomic criteria established for E. denticulatum. Chemical characterization of its carrageenan and the determination of its phylogenetic affinities support our morphological findings. Hence, we report and describe ‘endong’ as a rare variety, and we name it E. denticulatum (Burman) Collins & Hervey var. endong Trono & Ganzon-Fortes var. nov. Tips to distinguish ‘endong’ from ‘tambalang’ are included in this paper to aid seaweed farmers in separating the two during harvest.  相似文献

In 1905 two different microbes were proposed to fill the vacant role of etiologic agent for syphilis, one, the Cytorrhyctes luis, by John Siegel, the other, Spirochaeta pallida, by Fritz Schaudinn. After gathering and reviewing the evidence the majority of medical scientists decided in favor of Schaudinn’s candidate. In a previous issue Jean Lindenmann challenged Ludwik Fleck’s suggestion that under suitable social conditions Siegel’s candidate could just as well have won acceptance by the scientific community (Lindenmann, 2001). To refute this counterfactual thesis, Lindenmann presented an asymmetric account of the dispute over the etiology of syphilis. He adopted the view of the proponents that Schaudinn’s spirochete had already been there in syphilitic lesions for centuries, only awaiting the discovery of an appropriate staining technique to be revealed. Here a more symmetric analysis of the episode will be attempted, paying serious attention to the arguments put forward by the spirochete’s opponents, who expatiated on the many possibilities of inadvertently creating artifacts through microscopic preparation and staining. The symmetric account that is presented in this rejoinder thus aims to trace the simultaneous construction of facts and artifacts. It will not, however, resurrect Fleck’s counterfactual thesis.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper explores collective memory in Newham, East London. It addresses how remembering East London as the home of whiteness and traditional forms of community entails powerful forms of forgetting. Newham's formation through migration – its ‘great time’ – has ensured that myths of indigeneity and whiteness have never stood still. Through engaging with young people's and youth workers' memory practices, the paper explores how phantasms of whiteness and class loss are traced over, and how this tracing reveals ambivalence and porosity, at the same time as it highlights the continued allure of race. It explores how whiteness and class loss are appropriated across ethnic boundaries and how they are mobilized to produce new forms of racial hierarchy in a ‘super-diverse’ place.  相似文献

One‐tailed statistical tests are often used in ecology, animal behaviour and in most other fields in the biological and social sciences. Here we review the frequency of their use in the 1989 and 2005 volumes of two journals (Animal Behaviour and Oecologia), their advantages and disadvantages, the extensive erroneous advice on them in both older and modern statistics texts and their utility in certain narrow areas of applied research. Of those articles with data sets susceptible to one‐tailed tests, at least 24% in Animal Behaviour and at least 13% in Oecologia used one‐tailed tests at least once. They were used 35% more frequently with nonparametric methods than with parametric ones and about twice as often in 1989 as in 2005. Debate in the psychological literature of the 1950s established the logical criterion that one‐tailed tests should be restricted to situations where there is interest only in results in one direction. ‘Interest’ should be defined; however, in terms of collective or societal interest and not by the individual investigator. By this ‘collective interest’ criterion, all uses of one‐tailed tests in the journals surveyed seem invalid. In his book Nonparametric Statistics, S. Siegel unrelentingly suggested the use of one‐tailed tests whenever the investigator predicts the direction of a result. That work has been a major proximate source of confusion on this issue, but so are most recent statistics textbooks. The utility of one‐tailed tests in research aimed at obtaining regulatory approval of new drugs and new pesticides is briefly described, to exemplify the narrow range of research situations where such tests can be appropriate. These situations are characterized by null hypotheses stating that the difference or effect size does not exceed, or is at least as great as, some ‘amount of practical interest’. One‐tailed tests rarely should be used for basic or applied research in ecology, animal behaviour or any other science.  相似文献

In my article The genetical theory of multilevel selection, I provided a synthesis of the theory of multilevel selection (MLS) and the theory of natural selection in class‐structured populations. I framed this synthesis within Fisher's genetical paradigm, taking a strictly genetical approach to traits and fitness. I showed that this resolves a number of long‐standing conceptual problems that have plagued the MLS literature, including the issues of ‘aggregate’ vs. ‘emergent’ group traits, ‘collective fitness1’ vs. ‘collective fitness2’ and ‘MLS1’ vs. ‘MLS2 ‘. In his commentary, Goodnight suggests this theoretical and conceptual synthesis is flawed in several respects. Here, I show this is incorrect, by: reiterating the theoretical and conceptual goals of my synthesis; clarifying that my genetical approach to traits is necessary for a proper analysis of the action of MLS independently of non‐Darwinian factors; emphasizing that the Price–Hamilton approach to MLS provides a consistent, useful and conceptually superior theoretical framework; and explaining the role of reproductive value in the study of natural selection in class‐structured populations. I also show that Goodnight's contextual analysis treatment of MLS in a class‐structured population is mathematically, biologically and conceptually inadequate.  相似文献

Phytoplasmas are associated with diseases of several hundred plant species. Jujube witches’ broom disease (JWB) is a destructive phytoplasma disease in Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.). Ziziphus jujuba Mill. ‘J5’, an excellent strain with extremely high resistance to JWB, was selected by us. In our previous study, a GST (EC 2.5.1.18) fragment was sequenced from suppression subtractive hybridization library of ‘J5’ under JWB phytoplasma stress. Based on this result, a GST gene (ZjGSTU1, HM345954) was first isolated from jujube by homology cloning and RACE. ZjGSTU1 contains a complete open reading frame of 702 bp encoding a protein of 233 amino acid residues. Sequence alignment showed that ZjGSTU1 shared a typical conserved structure and high identity with tau GSTs from other plant species. Relative RT-PCR demonstrated that the expression of ZjGSTU1 mRNA in jujube leaves and branches could be triggered by JWB phytoplasma. Moreover, the expression of ZjGSTU1 mRNA in resistant strain ‘J5’ increased sooner and higher than that in sensitive strain ‘J9’ under JWB phytoplasma stress (‘J5’ and ‘J9’ are two strains from the same cultivar). Western blotting analyses showed that the expressions of ZjGSTU1 in ‘J5’ and ‘J9’ were dramatically up-regulated under JWB phytoplasma stress and its expression in ‘J5’ was also higher than that in ‘J9’ at protein level. Collectively, this paper highlights that ZjGSTU1 gene is responsive to phytoplasma infection. The possible roles of this gene were discussed in terms of regulatory process in resistance to phytoplasma infection.  相似文献

This article traces the paradoxical impact of Weber's oeuvre on two major scholars of nationalism, Ernest Gellner and Edward Shils. Both these scholars died in 1995, leaving behind a rich corpus of writings on the nation and nationalism, much of which was inspired by Max Weber. The paradox is that although neither scholar accepted Weber's sceptical attitude to the concept of ‘nation’, they both used his other major concepts, such as ‘rationality’, ‘disenchantment’, ‘unintended consequences’, the ‘ethic of responsibility’ and ‘charisma’, in their very analyses of the nation and nationalism. And they both saw, each in his own way, the nation and nationalism as constitutive elements of modern societies. However, the paradox ceases being a paradox if one sees the integration, by Shils and Gellner, of concepts of the nation and of nationalism in the analysis of modernity, as a development of Weber's ideas.  相似文献

Most cultivated apple cultivars are highly susceptible to fire blight, caused by Erwinia amylovora. However, differences in resistance levels are observed among cultivars and could be used in breeding. In this paper, we investigated the genetic basis of fire blight resistance of the cultivar ‘Enterprise’ and the advanced breeding selection X-6398. Genotyped pedigrees were used for validating and curating historic pedigree records. Various quantitative trait locus (QTL) discovery approaches were applied on the full-sib families ‘Gala’ × ‘Enterprise’ (GaEn) and X-6398 × X-6683 (IW) with the software FlexQTL? and MapQTL®. The paternal lineage of ‘Enterprise’ was reconstructed and showed to include ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’. The QTLs found varied with the software used. Using FlexQTL?, two were found on linkage groups (LGs) 7 and 13, favourable alleles inherited by Enterprise from ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’ and ‘Golden Delicious’, respectively. The former was identical to the previously named FB_F7 allele from ‘Fiesta’, while the latter is new and has been named FB_13GD. X-6398 had a QTL at the same position as FB_F7. Its favourable allele was new, originating from the unknown grandfather of X-4598, and was named FB_7X-6398. Using MapQTL® on GaEn, FB_F7 was also identified. Performing the same analysis on the subset of offspring that carried the favourable allele of FB_F7, two putative QTLs on LG8 and on top of LG13 were identified, which showed interactions with FB_F7. Implication of the findings for breeding for fire blight-resistant apples is discussed. Single nucleotide polymorphism data on Enterprise and its ancestors are provided.  相似文献

Tierpark Berlin is keeping Steller's Sea Eagles since 1959 continuously without any breeding success till 2009. There was one egg laid in 1962 only. In 2001 we received a female from Tiergarten Nuremberg. At seven years of age this bird has moulted into its adult plumage this being all dark brown apart from the white tail. This is the only known present living specimen of this dark morph and the first known for several decades. As the parents show the normal coloured plumage this is the first evidence that niger doesn’t exist as a subspecies but is a dark colour phase of pelagicus only. The dark coloured female was breeding with a normal coloured male in 2009 and one offspring was parent reared for the first time at Tierpark Berlin.  相似文献

Responding to the actions of the mate and taking somewhat fixed patterns,Grus japonensis, G. vipio, G. antigone, Anthropoides paradisea andBalearica regulorum pairs are finally led to copulation by a sequence of mating behaviours. There are slight differences in pre-copulatory behaviour patterns between the species and the female's ‘wing-spreading’, being the soliciting and key posture for copulation, differs between the genera; The female's wings are spread wide inGrus, fairly wide inAnthropoides, and are almost folded inBalearica. Post-copulatory behaviours, however, have definite species-specific characters. They usually consist of ‘head-down’ (bowing) or ‘warping’, ‘arching’, etc. immediately following the dismounting of the male inGrus. But a pair ofBalearica first keep their heads high, or gaze at each other for a while, and then show remarkable ‘ruffle-bowing’. These characteristic post-copulatory behaviours are obviously correlated with the threat displays, evolved under agonistic situations, typical to each species.  相似文献

A reliable Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and shoot regeneration protocol was developed for breeding lines of commercially important western-shipper cantaloupe and honeydew melons, ‘F39’ and ‘150’, respectively. Different media were tested to select a shoot regeneration system for each of three elite breeding lines ‘F39’, ‘141’ and ‘TMS’. Murashige &; Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 1 mg l?1 benzyladenine (BA), 0.26 mg l?1 abscisic acid (ABA) and 0.8 mg l?1 indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was used for shoot regeneration from cotyledonary explants in ‘F39’ and ‘150’. Kanamycin sensitivity as well as Timentin? and Clavamox® were evaluated using wild-type ‘F39’ and ‘150’ cotyledons. Kanamycin concentrations of 200 and 150 mg l?1 were chosen as the threshold levels for ‘F39’ and ‘150’, respectively. No significant differences were found between Timentin? and Clavamox® in ‘F39’; however, Clavamox® reduced the incidence of vitrification and increased the frequency of shoot elongation in ‘150’. A. tumefaciens strain EHA105, harboring pCNL56 carrying neomycin phosphotransferase II (nptII) and gusA reporter genes, was selected to establish a transformation protocol for ‘F39’ and ‘150’. Putative transformants were evaluated using β-glucuronidase (GUS) histochemical assay, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern blot analyses. Based on these parameters, the transformation efficiency for cantaloupe ‘F39’ was 0.3% and that for honeydew ‘150’ was 0.5%.  相似文献

This article explores the hidden transfers between law and religion by focussing on the conditions of existence of ‘liberated’ peasant subjects in contemporary China. The post-Maoist era sought to create new citizens from the collectivised Maoist masses who are subject to market reforms and a new politics of ‘governing through law’ (fazhi). At the same time, new religiousities have blossomed in the Chinese countryside. Representing ‘feudal superstition’, their collective practices remain illegal until today. I argue that, beyond the issue of belief, contemporary ‘feudal superstition’ does not represent a form of anti-secular resistance, but rather confirms the central tenets of Chinese secularism from the perspective of ‘failed’ peasant subjects. Where the realities of market liberalisation and governing through law are experienced as corruption, feudal superstition recreates the conditions to realise liberated peasant subjects: a participatory local public sphere, political visibility, investments in the public good, and a new collective property.  相似文献

This article gives a frank account of how anthropological research on Cape Verdean migrant experiences of parenthood in Portugal developed from avoiding the use of the analytical concept of ‘race’ to encountering ‘race’ as a category of practice in fieldwork and discusses the implications of this for analysing the data. Although the aim of the research was to look beyond categorizations, in order to explore the emotional dimensions of lived experience, the effects of ‘racial automatisms’ upon migrant subjectivities cannot be ignored. Racist effects are nonetheless distinguished from racist intentions. The ethnography elucidates the political potential of ‘race’ to foment critical reflection upon the relationship between an individual's personal and collective identities.  相似文献

The combination of two scion-one rootstock was used for two apple cultivars, ‘Pink Lady’ and ‘Qinguan’, budded on the same, one-year-old Malus hupehensis (Pamp.) Rehd. to reduce the impact of root and pot size and in order to understand the growth, water-use efficiency (WUE), and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics. The two-scion grafted trees were planted in plastic pots under two water regimes, i.e. 70% field capacity (FC) and 55% FC. Results indicated that different scions were affected differently by drought stress. ‘Pink Lady’ had higher net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration rate (E) compared with ‘Qinguan’ under both water treatments. However, ‘Qinguan’ had lower minimal fluorescence (F0), higher maximum fluorescence (Fm), and higher maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) than ‘Pink Lady’ at 55% FC. Moreover, ‘Qinguan’ had larger shoot dry mass (ShDM) and higher intrinsic WUEI than ‘Pink Lady’ under both water status. Gas-exchange and growth parameters, except for P N and scion diameter, were significantly affected by the cultivar and water treatment. At 70% FC, ShDM was significantly correlated with WUEI. Moreover, WUEI was negatively linearly correlated with g s at either 70 or 55% FC. These results might indicate that ‘Pink Lady’ was more sensitive to drought than ‘Qinguan’. ‘Qinguan’ apple was able to improve WUE more than ‘Pink Lady’ under both well-watered and drought conditions. The growth parameters and photosynthetic capacity of two different scions showed that the combination of double scion-one rootstock might eliminate the influences of the rootstock and pot size.  相似文献

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), the causative agent of Johne's disease (JD) in animals, has also been linked with Crohn's disease in human beings. Lack of indigenous diagnostics and vaccine hampered control of JD in India. Designing effective control strategies require thorough understanding of the etiological agent at phenotypic and molecular levels. On the basis of cultural phenotypes and IS1311 PCR-REA typing, MAP strains have been genotyped as ‘Cattle type’, ‘Sheep type’ and ‘Bison type’. Information exists on genetic differences and comparative evolution of ‘Cattle type’ and ‘Sheep type’ strains after divergence from M. avium; however, emphasis has been little on ‘Bison type’ strains. Recently, a new ‘Indian Bison type’ genotype has been reported as principal strain infecting different animal species and human beings in India. The study analyzed few genetic markers to have inferences on the molecular evolution of native MAP isolates belonging to ‘Bison type’ genotype. Results pointed towards recent evolution of ‘Bison type’ genotype.  相似文献
