Long-term trends in populations of Xiphinema diversicaudatum were measured in two microplot experiments in which annual and perennial crops of seven plant families were grown in monoculture. Numbers of X. diversicaudatum increased under perennial ryegrass, raspberry and strawberry but decreased under hop, spring barley, potato, sugar beet, cabbage, winter wheat and winter beans; these effects probably reflected differences in the inherent host status of the crops. There were fewer X. diversicaudatum at 40–60 cm below annual crops than below perennial crops, and there were differences between perennial crops in nematode vertical distribution. Soil pore space did not limit nematode population density; total pore space was uniformly large under all crops and there was no detectable instability to water slaking. Under ryegrass a greater proportion of soil volume was occupied by pores too small to accommodate X. diversicaudatum, but since ryegrass supported the second largest nematode population, it seems unlikely that this was seriously limiting.  相似文献

The distribution of Xiphinema and Longidorus species in the British Isles and Ireland were mapped by means of a computer programme from 5527 records. Longidorus caespiticola, L. elongatus, L. goodeyi and L. leptocephalus were found to be widespread among a wide range of vegetation types, particularly in grassland and arable crops; L. macrosoma and L. profundorum were recorded frequently in southern and central England, and L. attenuatus in East Anglia; L. vineacola was recorded once only in Eire. Paralongidorus maximus was recorded from two localities in eastern Scotland and one in southern England, on each occasion from intensively cultivated ground. Four species of Xiphinema were recorded but only X. diversicaudatum is widespread although apparently with a northerly limit in central Scotland; X. diversicaudatum was equally prevalent in arable crops, grassland and deciduous woodland; X. coxi and X. vuittenezi were recorded from a few scattered localities in England, and the few records for X. mediterraneum were all from Kent, south east England. All species were found in a wide range of soil types but mostly in light soils with a large sand fraction. Many of the species occurred together in mixed populations; L. caespiticola was most frequently associated with X. diversicaudatum and with L. leptocephalus and L. elongatus. X. diversicaudatum also was commonly found with L. goodeyi. Viruses were transmitted in laboratory bait tests in only eighteen of 325 soil samples containing X. diversicaudatum and four of 265 containing L. elongatus.  相似文献

Forty plant species were grown in pots containing viruliferous Xiphinema diversicaudatum (Micol.) for 15 wk to assess the host range of the nematode in relation to infection with arabis mosaic (AMV) and strawberry latent ring-spot (SLRV) viruses. Host status for the nematode was determined mainly from changes in total populations, but the presence of eggs in the uteri of females and changes in the numbers of adults provided additional criteria. The nematode multiplied on relatively more woody perennials than on herbaceous crop plants or weeds. Chrysanthemum coronarium was the only plant on which numbers declined significantly below those on the controls. Most plant species became infected with either AMV or SLRV. Neither virus was detected in eight out of thirteen species of trees and shrubs although four were good hosts for the nematode. Galling or distortion of the terminal region of fine feeder roots, associated with X. diversicaudatum feeding, was seen on many of the experimental plants.  相似文献

Both Trichodorus spp. and Longidorus spp. damage roots of sugar-beet seedlings in sandy soil, causing Docking disorder. Trials in infested fields between 1969 and 1972 tested the effects of fumigation along the rows with different amounts of D-D or Telone applied either two weeks before sowing or immediately before sowing, application of the systemic nematicide aldicarb (Temik) in the furrow with the seed during sowing, and top-dressing with nitrogen. Seedling establishment was often decreased by fumigation immediately before sowing, especially when followed by excessive rainfall, but only rarely by earlier fumigation or by aldicarb; differences in numbers of roots harvested were smaller because hand-singling removed excess seedlings. There was usually little difference between the yield increases given by the most effective treatments, which were aldicarb at 1·12 kg active ingredient/ha and 2·2–6·6 ml D-D or Telone/m of row at either time of application. Nitrogen top-dressing never affected sugar yield significantly. Longidorus spp. and Trichodorus spp. were both controlled well in the fumigated row but much less well at 13 cm, and not at all at 25 cm from the row (i.e. mid-way between two treated rows).  相似文献

The frequency with which the four virus-vector species of longidoroid nematodes occurring in Britain transmitted their associated plant viruses were compared in a series of experiments using a standard procedure. In these tests Xiphinema diversicaudatum proved an effective vector of British isolates of arabis mosaic virus and strawberry latent ringspot virus and Longidorus attenuatus of an isolate of tomato black ring virus from England. In comparison, isolates of raspberry ringspot virus and tomato blackring virus from Scotland and of raspberry ringspot virus from England were transmitted much less readily by their respective vectors, L. elongatus and L. macrosoma. These differences in ability to transmit virus were not related to differences in feeding access on the virus source- or bait-plants, in the extent to which virus was retained within the nematode feeding apparatus or in the frequency with which virus was recovered from Longidorus in concurrent slash tests. Three Scottish isolates of raspberry ringspot and tomato black ring viruses were transmitted equally infrequently by two populations of L. elongatus and the frequency with which virus was transmitted was not greatly increased when the species of source or bait plants was changed.  相似文献

Summary Among some species of Sonoran Desert rodents microhabitat differences are density dependent. I studied the differences in microhabitat use among four species of heteromyid rodents (Dipodomys merriami, Perognathus amplus, P. baileyi, and P. penicillatus) at low and at high population densities. Microhabitats are defined by the abundance and size distribution of desert shrubs. During a period of low population density the rodent species showed substantial microhabitat differentiation. Following a large increase in pocket mouse (Perognathus spp.) numbers differences in microhabitat use between species disappeared. The lack of microhabitat differentiation at high density is due to microhabitat shifts rather than an expansion in the number of microhabitats used. The shifts lead to increased similarity among species in microhabitat use. Microhabitat overlap is not constant but it is highly variable and sensitive to changes in rodent abundance.  相似文献

Sudden changes in the variability of natural populations can result in increased likelihood of extinction or in greater frequency and intensity of pest outbreaks. These changes could be associated with changes in some relevant population parameters such as the equilibrium density or the maximum population growth rate. However, changes in these parameters have very different consequences. An increase in equilibrium density results in a higher variance in population fluctuations according to the relationship between mean and variance described by Taylor's power law, but does not modify the stability properties of the system. On the other hand, changes in the maximum growth rate induce changes in the dynamic regimes and stability properties of the population. In this study, using statistical and mathematical methods borrowed from econometrics and engineering, we identify structural changes to the variance in the population dynamics of the sycamore aphid Drepanosiphum platanoidis and the green spruce aphid Elatobium abietinum in the UK. Some localities showed strong changes in their population parameters, such that their dynamic regime changed completely. These changes in the population dynamic regimes increase the expected frequency of outbreaks, which has enormous economic and ecological consequences. Through this study we show the application of methods that could be helpful to pest and wildlife managers in the task of evaluating changes in the risk of outbreaks or extinction of animal populations under changing global environmental scenarios.  相似文献

Question: How does the frequency of heathland fire events affect population growth rates of two woody shrub species, Ulex gallii and U. minor? Location: Dry heathland on the south coast of England, UK. Methods: The population dynamics of U. gallii and U. minor were modelled at each phase of the heathland cycle — pioneer, building, mature and degenerate — using periodic matrix products to investigate the response to different fire regimes. Results: Population growth rates of both Ulex species declined under annual burning. Initially, as the time between burns increased, population growth rate increased for both species. Maximum population growth rates for each Ulex species were achieved under a 16‐yr fire return interval. Fire return intervals > 16 yr resulted in declining population growth rates. Conclusions: A species‐specific critical fire frequency can be predicted, the minimum fire return intervals permitting persistence were 4 yr for U. minor and 3 yr for U. gallii. These patterns are similar to those reported for a range of woody plant species within savanna environments.  相似文献

Cyclic vole populations, defined as showing fairly regular 3–4 yr density fluctuations but with variable amplitudes, were monitored in boreal Sweden in spring and fall 1971–2002, starting in fall 1971. Voles were snap-trapped on permanent sampling plots at the landscape level within a 100 by 100 km study area north of Umeå. The predominating species trapped were Clethrionomys glareolus, C. rufocanus and Microtus agrestis. In addition to the 3–4 yr cycles, there was a long-term decrease in numbers and amplitude of the fluctuations, which was especially conspicuous in C. rufocanus. In this latter species there was a persistent decline of both spring and fall densities, apparently bringing the population close to extinction in the area. However, the decline of spring densities from the 1970s to the 1980s and onwards was also evident in C. glareolous and M. agrestis. The declines in numbers and amplitude were largely linked to an increased frequency and/or accentuation of winter declines, which more or less neutralized or even overrode the density increase during the reproductive season in the previous summer, especially so in the second year of the cycles. Thereby the gradual two-large-step build-up of high spring densities, very much founding the base for the very large peak densities and amplitudes in the 1970s, was successively replaced by a one-smaller-step build-up of more modest spring densities, leading to lower peak densities and amplitudes in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. Understanding the causes of the increased frequency and/or severeness of winter declines appears critical to understanding the observed long-term changes in numbers. However, the underlying causes of the increase of winter declines and the decrease of densities and amplitudes are unknown, but some hypotheses are presented and discussed here. Also, some implications from the decreased vole abundance for reproduction and densities of predators on the voles, and on predators’ alternative prey species, are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Intra- and interspecific competition between laboratory populations of four green leafhoppers, Nephotettix spp. was studied in the laboratory under three different temperature regimes of 24°C, 27°C and 30°C. For the single-species population of the three tropical species, the equilibrium density increased as the temperature increased. On the other hand, for the temperature species N. cincticeps, the highest equilibrium density was at the intermediate temperature and the lowest at high temperature. Interspecific interactions between two tropical (N. virescens vs. N. nigropictus), a tropical and a temperature (N. virescens vs. N. cincticeps) and a rice-feeding and a grass-inhabiting (N. virescens vs. N. malayanus) Nephotettix species were also studied in the laboratory at the three temperature regimes. Temperature differentially affected the outcome of competition between two Nephotettix species. Between N. virescens and N. nigropictus, the latter was more successful over the former at low and intermediate temperatures, while the former was more successful at high temperature. Between N. virescens and N. cincticeps, the temperate species inhibited the growth of the tropical species at low temperature while the tropical species inhibited the growth of the temperate species at high temperature. At intermediate temperature, the population of N. virescens persisted at a slightly higher density over the population of N. cincticeps. Between the rice-feeding N. virescens and the grass-inhabiting N. malayanus, regardless of temperature the population density of the latter was greatly reduced and later became extinct while the population of the former continued its growth. These consequences of competition between two Nephotettix species conformed fairly well to those predicted by theLotka-Volterra model using demographic parameters specified for each species.  相似文献

About half the nurseries and glasshouses in the Lea Valley of Hertfordshire were found to be infested with either or both Pratylenchus vulnus and Xiphinema diversicaudatum. The latter nematode probably occurred naturally in the soil on which the glasshouses were built but P. vulnus is thought to have been imported with rose rootstocks and is not known to occur outdoors in Britain. Both nematode species can cause decline of roses and even small numbers seem harmful. Numbers of P. vulnus can increase greatly, especially on rootstocks of Rosa canina, although numbers were often smaller when roses were severely damaged than on healthier crops. Numbers of X. diversicaudatum increased more slowly and R. canina was a better host for it than R. chinensis. X. diversicaudatum seemed to respond less quickly than P. vulnus to reduced host-plant vigour. The two rootstocks exhibited different host-status for the two species of nematode and cuttings of various rose cultivars showed different host-status to P. thornei, another species of lesion nematode which is not known to be pathogenic to roses. Two applications of dibromochloropropane liquid at the rate of 70 l/ha in a large volume of water maintained nematode densities at an acceptably low level, and growers who adopted this treatment as a supplement to pre-planting steam sterilisation and/or DD (dichloro-propane: dichloropropene) prolonged the productive life of their crops for several years.  相似文献

Oxamyl applied to field soil prevented Longidorus elongatus from acquiring and transmitting tomato black ring virus for at least 6 wk, although numbers of nematodes were not greatly decreased compared with the untreated control. Glasshouse and laboratory tests examined the effects of oxamyl on viruliferous L. elongatus and Xiphinema diversicaudatum. In these tests oxamyl (1.0 ppm) in the soil water largely prevented L. elongatus transmitting virus to bait plants over a period of 1 month. X. diversicaudatum was equally affected by smaller concentrations, 0.1 ppm being sufficient to inhibit virus transmission in one test. Inhibition of virus transmission was associated with a decrease in the number of root tip galls produced by nematode feeding, especially that of X. diversicaudatum. Few nematodes were seriously affected by oxamyl, except at the greatest concentration tested (100 ppm), when numbers of L. elongatus, but not of X. diversicaudatum, were decreased. In vitro-treated viruliferous nematodes protracted their stylets, but their subsequent ability to transmit virus was unimpaired.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to compare the responses to increasing density of different natural populations of Danthonia caespitosa, a perennial grass of southern Australia, under different temperature regimes. Seeds were collected from four populations along a 167-km N–S transect beginning north of Deniliquin, N.S.W., and ending near Heathcote, Victoria. Seedlings from each population were planted in loamy sand at three densities and grown under day/night temperature regimes of 15/10, 24/19, and 33/28 C in the Canberra Ceres Phytotron. Results indicate that one natural population (or one temperature regime) can not be used to characterize this species' responses to increasing density. The effects of density and temperature on tillering, plant height, leaf length, and leaf width varied significantly among populations, so that populations achieved comparable shoot weights by different relative responses to density. Variability in biomass among individuals (as indicated by coefficients of variation) increased from low to intermediate density; however, size variability at the highest density was either greater, lesser, or approximately the same as that of plants at the intermediate density, depending upon the population and the temperature regime. The combinations of density and temperature which produced the maximum shoot growth per pot varied markedly among populations; at 24/19 C, populations from frequently disturbed areas of low perennial plant cover had greater shoot weights per pot at the intermediate density, while those populations from more stable grassland sites had their greatest shoot weights at the highest density. Flowering occurred in all populations at the low density in 15/10 C; however, only for the population from the ungrazed grassland was there any flowering in the other temperature regimes or at higher densities. It is concluded that a “response to density stress” could be differentially described for each population at each temperature regime, even though the four study populations represented only 1/10 of the latitudinal range of D. caespitosa.  相似文献

Soil from twelve of twenty-six sites on ten nurseries growing ornamental trees and shrubs contained viruliferous nematodes, transmitting arabis mosaic virus (AMV) at eight sites, tomato black ring virus at three and tobacco rattle virus at one site. Tobacco necrosis virus was detected at two sites. Xiphinema spp. were found at nine sites, Longidorus spp. at sixteen and Trichodorus spp. at thirteen sites. Thirty-one ornamental species of Rosaceae were tested for virus infections and AMV was found in Spiraea bumalda, Spiraea japonica alba and Kerria japonica.  相似文献

1. The combined effects of increasing pH (< 9–11) and increasing densities of perch (0, two, four per enclosure) have been investigated in polyethylene enclosures of volume about 1100 1 in a shallow, fertile lake in Cheshire. 2. Increasing pH decreased carbon dioxide concentrations, chlorophyll a concentrations and diatom biomass. It led to increases in the proportions of Cryptophyta (to pH 10) and Chlorophyta (to pH 11). Although ample inocula were present, significant growths of cyanophytes were not recorded, contrary to expectation. 3. Increasing pH led to increases in numbers of Daphnia hyalina particularly at pH 10 but collapse at pH 11. This persistence at pH 10, independent of perch number, is attributed to reduced feeding of the fish, which survived at this pH. Other zooplankters (Ceriodaphnia spp., Bosmina longirostris, Polyphemus pediculus, Cyclops spp.) all declined with increasing pH. 4. Increasing fish density resulted in an increase in chlorophyll a concentration and in the biomass of Chlorophyta but had no effect on cyanophyte or cryptophyte biomass. 5. Increasing fish density led to declines in Daphnia in the untreated lake-water controls (pH < 9) and at pH 9, but had no effect at pH 10 where Daphnia hyalina was very abundant. Numbers of Ceriodaphnia spp. and Bosmina longirostris increased with increasing fish density, whilst numbers of Polyphemus pediculus and Cyclops spp. were independent of it. 6. The results are discussed in the light of contemporary knowledge of the factors resulting in large cyanophyte growths and of the factors controlling the stability of macrophyte-dominated and phytoplankton-dominated states in shallow lakes. The interaction between pH and fish density and consequent non-linear response of Daphnia hyalina is particularly notable because of the significance of zooplankton grazing in shallow lakes.  相似文献

Plants of Banksia ericifolia and Petrophile pulchella are sensitive to fire. Changes in population size under different fire regimes were estimated, based on measurements of post-fire seedling emergence, seedling survival, survival and seed production in established plants of differing ages, survival of seeds held in serotinous cones and seed-release in the periods between fire. Seeds were first available at 5 years in P. pulchella and 6 years in B. ericifolia. Exact replacement would be possible when burnt at these ages, if seedling establishment were very high. Low establishment would delay replacement to 13 years of age in both species. Late summer/autumn fires of high intensity favour high establishment. Such fires at 8–10 year intervals would be tolerated without any sustained decline in numbers. Fires at 10–15 year intervals could occur regardless of season or intensity with little risk of a population decline. Large increases in numbers and density would follow fires spaced at 15–30 years. Enough seeds would be available for replacement up to about 50 years in both species. Viable seed-release in unburnt conditions was sufficient to compensate for deaths in stands over 20 years old, even with very low levels of establishment. Two variables accounted for the biggest changes in numbers and density between generations interspersed by fires; namely the age at which a stand is burned and the proportion of seeds which emerge as seedlings. A comparison with other similar species showed similarities in controls on emergence and establishment, lengths of primary juvenile periods and life spans.  相似文献

The study aimed at determining thrips species composition and thrips population density on French bean planted as a sole crop and as an intercrop with either sunflower, Irish potato, or baby corn, in various combinations. Field experiments were conducted in two seasons to examine: (1) thrips population development and thrips species composition over time, (2) effect of intercrops on thrips population density and natural enemies, and (3) effect of intercrops on French bean yield. The experiments were conducted at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, Embu, Kenya in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. The thrips population on French beans increased with time. It showed a peak at the flowering stage then started declining when the crops were nearing senescence. French beans hosted four thrips species, Megalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom), Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom), Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), and Hydatothrips aldolfifriderici (Karny) (all Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in order of decreasing abundance. The main thrips species on Irish potato and sunflower was F. schultzei. Baby corn hosted only Frankliniella williamsi (Hood) and Thrips pusillus (Bagnall). A monocrop of French bean hosted more thrips than a French bean intercrop mix. Thrips natural enemies such as Orius spp. and Ceranisus spp. were recorded in all crop plants but in especially high numbers on French bean and baby corn, respectively. Plots with French bean alone had about 1.4 times higher yields compared to intercropped plots of French bean with sunflower and French bean with baby corn. However, the percentage of pods that could get rejected on the market due to thrips damage was highest on plots with French bean alone (68 and 63%) and lowest on plots with French bean and baby corn (35 and 37%) in the first and second seasons, respectively. This study showed that a complex of thrips is found in the field and its composition varies with crop stage and species. Intercropping French bean with other crops compromises on French bean yield but reduces damage to the French bean pods, thereby enhancing marketable yield.  相似文献

A study over 4 years into the number of breeding bird species and species turnover (extinctions and colonisations) in relation to area was conducted in 35 woodlands, set in an intensively farmed landscape, in north-east Essex, UK. A total of 46 species was recorded. The number of species breeding increased with woodland area; the slope of the species–area relationship did not differ between years. Habitat diversity was the only other measured variable to influence species richness. Absolute species turnover was independent of woodland area but relative turnover declined with increase in woodland area. The numbers of territories of nine species were determined. For four summer visitors the number of woods occupied increased as the overall populations increased but, for the other species, changes in overall population size led to changes in numbers in occupied woods. Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs and Song Thrush Turdus philomelos were more associated with woodland edges, Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos, Garden Warbler Sylvia borin, Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita and Willow Warbler P. trochilus with interiors. Several species showed an inverse relationship between population density and woodland area. Collections of small woods hold similar species richness to single large woods. While the acquisition of large woods for conservation purposes should be a priority, the extension of smaller woods to a size of about 10 ha would be highly beneficial to both the species richness and population stability of regional woodland bird assemblages.  相似文献

During 1979 and 1980 the herbage yields of two permanent pastures and two temporary swards were compared. All four swards received 250 kg N/ha per yr. The invertebrate population of all four swards was studied. Pot-worms (Enchytraeidae) and some species with long life cycles, e.g. wireworms (Agriotes spp.) were more numerous in the permanent swards, but aerial species were more numerous in the temporary swards. A range of pesticide treatments was applied. At one temporary sward site, application of the broad-spectrum pesticide aldicarb increased total annual yield of herbage by 16% in 1979 and 33% in 1980. Insecticide application at the same site resulted in no increase in herbage yield in 1979 and 12% yield increase in 1980. At the other three sites no significant increases in total annual yield were recorded in either year, but there were significant responses at one harvest or more at every site.
