Motivated by biochemical processes during muscular contraction, a model is constructed that predicts isometric force from surface electromyographic signals (sEMG). The model is experimentally validated and then it is used to predict contractions from sEMG data. The calculated simulations reveal a highly non-linear relationship between sEMG and isometric force.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to apply models derived from the robotics field to evaluate the human upper-limb force generation capacity. Four models were compared: the force ellipsoid (FE) and force polytope (FP) based on unit joint torques and the scaled FE (SFE) and scaled FP (SFP) based on maximum isometric joint torques. The four models were assessed from four upper-limb postures with varying elbow flexion (40°, 60°, 80° and 100°) measured by an optoelectronic system and their corresponding isometric joint torques. Ten subjects were recruited. Three specific ellipsoids and polytopes parameters were compared: isotropy, principal force orientation and volume. Isotropy showed that the ellipsoids and polytopes were elongated. The angle between the two ellipsoids main axis and the two polytopes remained low but increased with the elbow flexion. The FE and FP volumes increased and those of SFE and SFP decreased with the elbow flexion. The interest and limits of such models are discussed in the framework of ergonomics and rehabilitation.  相似文献

Abstract

Developing tools to predict the force capabilities of the human limbs through the Force Feasible Set (FFS) may be of great interest for robotic assisted rehabilitation and digital human modelling for ergonomics. Indeed, it could help to refine rehabilitation programs for active participation during exercise therapy and to prevent musculoskeletal disorders. In this framework, the purpose of this study is to use artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict the FFS of the upper-limb based on joint centre Cartesian positions and anthropometric data. Seventeen right upper-limb musculoskeletal models based on individual anthropometric data are created. For each musculoskeletal model, the FFS is computed for 8428 different postures. For any combination of force direction and joint positions, ANNs can predict the FFS with high values of coefficient of determination (R2?>?0.89) between the true and predicted data.  相似文献

The steady-state force following active muscle shortening or stretch differs from the maximum isometric force associated with the final length. This phenomenon proves that the isometric force production is not only dependent on current muscle length and length time derivative, but depends on the preceding contraction history. Isolated extensor digitorum longus and soleus muscles from mice (NMRI strain) were used to investigate the force produced by a muscle, and some parameters hypothetically influencing this history-dependent force modification. The muscles were pre-stimulated at a fixed length, then different stretch/shortening episodes were introduced, whereafter changes of the active force were recorded while the muscles were held isometrically to approach a steady-state force before de-stimulation. The mechanical work during active stretch and shortening was evaluated by integrating the product of force and ramp velocity over the length-varying period. The results show a negative linear correlation between the force modification and the mechanical work produced on or by the muscle, continuous between shortening and stretch. A corresponding modification of the passive force component following each stimulation was also observed. The conclusion is that the isometric force attained after stretch or shortening is well described by an asymptotic force which is determined by the mechanical work.  相似文献

Functional electrical stimulation is used to restore movement and function of paralyzed muscles by activating skeletal muscle artificially. An accurate and predictive mathematical model can facilitate the design of stimulation patterns that produce the desired force. The present study is a first step in developing a mathematical model for non-isometric muscle contractions. The goals of this study were to: (1) identify how our isometric force model's parameters vary with changes in knee joint angle, (2) identify the best knee flexion angle to parameterize this model, and (3) validate the model by comparing experimental data to predictions in response to a wide range of stimulation frequencies and muscle lengths. Results showed that by parabolically varying one of the free parameters with knee joint angle and fixing the other parameters at the values identified at 40 degrees of knee flexion, the model could predict the force responses to a wide range of stimulation frequencies and patterns at different muscle lengths. This work showed that the current isometric force model is capable of predicting the changes in skeletal muscle force at different muscle lengths.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the ankle joint angle and maximum isometric force of the toe flexor muscles. Toe flexor strength and electromyography activity of the foot muscles were measured in 12 healthy men at 6 different ankle joint angles with the knee joint at 90 deg in the sitting position. To measure the maximum isometric force of the toe flexor muscles, subjects exerted maximum force on a toe grip dynamometer while the activity levels of the intrinsic and extrinsic plantar muscles were measured. The relation between ankle joint angle and maximum isometric force of the toe flexor muscles was determined, and the isometric force exhibited a peak when the ankle joint was at 70–90 deg on average. From this optimal neutral position, the isometric force gradually decreased and reached its nadir in the plantar flexion position (i.e., 120 deg). The EMG activity of the abductor hallucis (intrinsic plantar muscle) and peroneus longus (extrinsic plantar muscle) did not differ at any ankle joint angles. The results of this study suggest that the force generation of toe flexor muscles is regulated at the ankle joint and that changes in the length-tension relations of the extrinsic plantar muscle could be a reason for the force-generating capacity at the metatarsophalangeal joint when the ankle joint angle is changed.  相似文献

The identification of the motor unit (MU) innervation zone (IZ) using surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals detected on the skin with a linear array or a matrix of electrodes has been recently proposed in the literature. However, an analysis of the reliability of this procedure and, therefore, of the suitability of the sEMG signals for this purpose has not been reported.The purpose of this work is to describe the intra and inter-rater reliability and the suitability of surface EMG in locating the innervation zone of the upper trapezius muscle.Two operators were trained on electrode matrix positioning and sEMG signal analysis. Ten healthy subjects, instructed to perform a series of isometric contractions of the upper trapezius muscle participated in the study. The two operators collected sEMG signals and then independently estimated the IZ location through visual analysis.Results showed an almost perfect agreement for intra-rater and inter-rater reliability. The constancy of IZ location could be affected by the factors reflecting the population of active MUs and their IZs, including: the contraction intensity, the acquisition period analyzed, the contraction repetition. In almost all cases the IZ location shift due to these factors did not exceed 4 mm. Results generalization to other muscles should be made with caution.  相似文献

The complexity of the anatomy and actions makes it difficult in identifying the number of active sources from the multiple channel recordings. This paper addresses two applications of independent component analysis (ICA) on sEMG: the first one is to evaluate the use of ICA for the separation of bioelectric signals when the number of active sources may not be known. The second application is to identify complex hand gestures using decomposed sEMG. The theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the ICA is suitable for the separation of myoelectric signals. This study deals with the recruitment characteristics of unfatigued electrically stimulated quadriceps muscles of paraplegic subjects and with the time-dependent force output of these muscles under sustained stimulation conditions. Both these aspects of the performance of paralysed stimulated muscles were studied under isometric conditions and at different muscle lengths. The forces in the knee joint resulting from stimulation of the quadriceps were also calculated. Recruitment force curves due to a ramp-like stimulation function indicated a strong dependence on muscle length and demonstrated a sigmoid-shaped curve with three distinct regions: negligible force up to threshold stimulation intensity; rapid force increase; and levelling-off of the curve after which the force remains constant even though intensity is further increased. When normalized to the maximal force, recruitment was found to be independent of muscle length, generating a typical recruitment curve for every patient, under isometric stimulation. The peak forces were obtained at the same flexion angles previously published for normal subjects, but with much lower values. Muscle fatigue in tetanic isometric conditions, defined as the decrease in force due to sustained stimulation with fixed parameters, was found to be length dependent and to have a double exponential decay. The first is the acute force loss and is the more significant for functional purposes; the second is the more moderate and asymptotic region, in which partial force receovery in the form of bursts is observed.  相似文献

The steady-state force following active shortening does not reach the maximum isometric force associated with the final length. Isolated extensor digitorum longus and soleus muscles from mice (NMRI strain) were used to investigate the force produced by a muscle, and some parameters hypothetically influencing this shortening-induced force depression. The muscles were pre-stimulated at fixed length, shortened and then held isometrically to give maximum post-shortening forces, before de-stimulation. The shortening magnitude was 0.18, 0.36 or 0.72mm (about 2-7% of optimal length), time of shortening was chosen as 0.03, 0.06 and 0.12s, and final length as +0.72, 0 and -0.72mm, related to optimal length. The mechanical work during active shortening was evaluated by integrating the product of force and shortening velocity over the shortening period. The results show a positive correlation between the force depression and the mechanical work, whereas the force depression was not correlated to the velocity of shortening. Depression of the passive force component was also observed following all stimulations. Experiments show that the fully stimulated redevelopment of isometric force following concentric contraction follows a time function similar to the creation of force when isometric muscle is initially stimulated. The conclusion is that the isometric force development after active shortening can be well described by an asymptotic force which is decided by the produced work, and the initial isometric time constant.  相似文献

A group of 32 healthy men (M) divided into three different age groups, i.e. M20 years [mean 21 (SD 1); n = 12], M40 [mean 40 (SD 2); n = 10] and M70 [mean 71 (SD 5); n = 10] volunteered as subjects for examination of maximal and explosive force production of leg extensor muscles in both isometric and dynamic actions (squat jump, SJ and counter movement jump, CMJ, and standing long-jump, SLJ). The balance test was performed on a force platform in both isometric and dynamic actions. Maximal bilateral isometric force value in M70 was lower (P < 0.001) than in M40 and as much as 46% lower (P < 0.001) than that recorded in M20 (P < 0.001). The maximal rate of force development (RFD) on the force-time curve was in M70 lower (P < 0.001) than in M40 and as much as 64% lower than in M20. The heights in SJ and CMJ and the distance in SLJ in M70 were lower (P < 0.001) than in M40 and M20 (P < 0.001). In response to modifications of the visual surroundings the older subjects were 24%-47% (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001) slower in their response time in reaching the lit centre (TT) and remained 20%-34% (P < 0.001) less time inside the centre (TC) from the overall time of lighting than M40 and M20, respectively. In both older groups the individual values of isometric RFD correlated significantly (P < 0.05) with the individual balance values of TT and TC. The present results would suggest that the capacity for explosive force production declines drastically with increasing age, even more than maximal muscle strength. Aging may also lead to impaired balance with a decrease in event detection and speed of postural adjustments. The decreased ability to develop force rapidly in older people seems to be associated with a lower capacity for neuromuscular response in controlling postural sway.  相似文献

Muscular activity in terms of surface electromyography (sEMG) is usually normalised to maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs). This study aims to compare two different MVIC-modes in handcycling and examine the effect of moving average window-size. Twelve able-bodied male competitive triathletes performed ten MVICs against manual resistance and four sport-specific trials against fixed cranks. sEMG of ten muscles [M. trapezius (TD); M. pectoralis major (PM); M. deltoideus, Pars clavicularis (DA); M. deltoideus, Pars spinalis (DP); M. biceps brachii (BB); M. triceps brachii (TB); forearm flexors (FC); forearm extensors (EC); M. latissimus dorsi (LD) and M. rectus abdominis (RA)] was recorded and filtered using moving average window-sizes of 150, 200, 250 and 300 ms. Sport-specific MVICs were higher compared to manual resistance for TB, DA, DP and LD, whereas FC, TD, BB and RA demonstrated lower values. PM and EC demonstrated no significant difference between MVIC-modes. Moving average window-size had no effect on MVIC outcomes. MVIC-mode should be taken into account when normalised sEMG data are illustrated in handcycling. Sport-specific MVICs seem to be suitable for some muscles (TB, DA, DP and LD), but should be augmented by MVICs against manual/mechanical resistance for FC, TD, BB and RA.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: When muscle is allowed to shorten during an active contraction, the maximum force that redevelops after shortening is smaller than the isometric force at the same muscle length without prior shortening. We studied the course of force redevelopment after shortening in smooth muscle to unravel the mechanism responsible for this deactivation. METHOD: In a first series of measurements the shortening velocity was varied resulting in different shortening amplitudes. In a second series, the duration of stimulation before shortening (shortening delay) was varied. In a third series, the stimulation was interrupted for a certain duration immediately after shortening. Force, muscle length and stimulation were continuously recorded. Time constants were calculated to describe the rate of force development before and after shortening. RESULTS: With increasing shortening amplitude and with increasing shortening delay, force redevelopment decreased. Redevelopment increased with an increase in the interruption time. After stimulus interruption force redeveloped mono-exponentially with a time constant similar to that of isometric contractions (approximately 3s). Without the interruption of stimulation, the redevelopment of force immediately after shortening was best described by two time constants; one similar to and one about 3-5 times faster than the isometric time constant. DISCUSSION: Force (re)development is caused by a cascade of events leading to the cycling of cross-bridges. In smooth muscle, isometric force development is described by a time constant of about 3s. Force redevelopment immediately after shortening involves a second process which takes place at a faster rate (time constant about 1s). We assume that this process is faster due to the immediate availability of cytoplasmic calcium released during active shortening. Deactivation presumably is caused by disorganization of filaments during shortening.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that raw surface EMG (sEMG) should be high pass filtered with cutoffs of 10-30 Hz to remove motion artifact before subsequent processing to estimate muscle force. The purpose of the current study was to explore the benefits of filtering out much of the raw sEMG signal when attempting to estimate accurate muscle forces. Twenty-five subjects were studied as they performed rapid static, anisotonic contractions of the biceps brachii. Biceps force was estimated (as a percentage of maximum) based on forces recorded at the wrist. An iterative approach was used to process the sEMG from the biceps brachii, using progressively greater high pass cutoff frequencies (20-440 Hz in steps of 30 Hz) with first and sixth order filters, as well as signal whitening, to determine the effects on the accuracy of EMG-based biceps force estimates. The results indicate that removing up to 99% of the raw sEMG signal power resulted in significant and substantial improvements in biceps force estimates. These findings challenge previous assumptions that the raw sEMG signal power between about 20 and 500 Hz should used when estimating muscle force. For the purposes of force prediction, it appears that a much smaller, high band of sEMG frequencies may be associated with force and the remainder of the spectrum has little relevance for force estimation.  相似文献

The goals of this study were first to determine the effect of temperature on the force loss that results from eccentric contractions in mouse extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles and then to evaluate a potential role for altered Ca(2+) homeostasis explaining the greater isometric force loss observed at the higher temperatures. Isolated muscles performed five eccentric or five isometric contractions at either 15, 20, 25, 30, 33.5, or 37 degrees C. Isometric force loss, caffeine-induced force, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, muscle accumulation of (45)Ca(2+) from the bathing medium, sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca(2+) uptake, and resting muscle fiber free cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) were measured. The isometric force loss after eccentric contractions increased progressively as temperature rose; at 15 degrees C, there was no significant loss of force, but at 37 degrees C, there was a 30-39% loss of force. After eccentric contractions, caffeine-induced force was not affected by temperature nor was it different from that of control muscles at any temperature. Loss of cell membrane integrity and subsequent influx of extracellular Ca(2+) as indicated by LDH release and muscle (45)Ca(2+) accumulation, respectively, were minimal over the 15-25 degrees C range, but both increased as an exponential function of temperature between 30 and 37 degrees C. SR Ca(2+) uptake showed no impairment as temperature increased, and the eccentric contraction-induced rise in resting fiber [Ca(2+)](i) was unaffected by temperature over the 15-25 degrees C range. In conclusion, the isometric force loss after eccentric contractions is temperature dependent, but the temperature dependency does not appear to be readily explainable by alterations in Ca(2+) homeostasis.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the cycling technique of triathletes and cyclists on the basis of the cocontraction of selected muscles of the lower limbs and economy at different cadences. The economy (EC) and percent cocontraction from nine triathletes and eight cyclists were compared at 60, 75, 90 and 105 rpm cadences. Tests were performed on two separate days. The maximal oxygen uptake was measured and the second ventilatory threshold (VO2VT) was estimated on the first day using a stationary bicycle. On the second day the four different cadences were tested at approximately 5% below the VO2VT. The EMG activity of the rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF) and vastus lateralis (VL) was recorded and the EMG signal was normalized using the 60 rpm dynamic contraction. The percent cocontractions were calculated from RF/BF and VL/BF muscles. The EC was also calculated. The results showed that cyclists were significantly more economic, indicating that they exerted more power with less VO2, and presented significantly lower percent cocontraction than triathletes (p < 0.05). Thus, the results suggest that the cyclists had a better technique than the triathletes. The simultaneous use of the percent cocontraction and economy seems to be a good performance indicator for cyclists and triathletes.  相似文献

There is evidence that the stretch-induced residual force enhancement observed in skeletal muscles is associated with 1) cross-bridge dynamics and 2) an increase in passive force. The purpose of this study was to characterize the total and passive force enhancement and to evaluate whether these phenomena may be associated with a slow detachment of cross bridges. Single fibers from frog lumbrical muscles were placed at a length 20% longer than the plateau of the force-length relationship, and active and passive stretches (amplitudes of 5 and 10% of fiber length and at a speed of 40% fiber length/s) were performed. Experiments were conducted in Ringer solution and with the addition of 2, 5, and 10 mM of 2,3-butanedione monoxime (BDM), a cross-bridge inhibitor. The steady-state active and passive isometric forces after stretch of an activated fiber were higher than the corresponding forces measured after isometric contractions or passive stretches. BDM decreased the absolute isometric force and increased the total force enhancement in all conditions investigated. These results suggest that total force enhancement is directly associated with cross-bridge kinetics. Addition of 2 mM BDM did not change the passive force enhancement after 5 and 10% stretches. Addition of 5 and 10 mM did not change (5% stretches) or increased (10% stretches) the passive force enhancement. Increasing stretch amplitudes and increasing concentrations of BDM caused relaxation after stretch to be slower, and because passive force enhancement is increased at the greatest stretch amplitudes and the highest BDM concentrations, it appears that passive force enhancement may be related to slow-detaching cross bridges.  相似文献

Objectives: Muscle stiffness increases during muscle contraction. The purpose of this study was to determine the strength of the correlation between myotonometric measurements of muscle stiffness and surface electromyography (sEMG) measurements during various levels of voluntary isometric contractions of the biceps brachii muscle. Subjects: Eight subjects (four female; four male), with mean age of 30.6±8.23 years, volunteered to participate in this study. Methods: Myotonometer and sEMG measurements were taken simultaneously from the right biceps brachii muscle. Data were obtained: (1) at rest, (2) while the subject held a 15 lb (6.8 kg) weight isometrically and, (3) during a maximal voluntary isometric contraction. Myotonometer force–displacement curves (amount of tissue displacement to a given unit of force applied perpendicular to the muscle) were compared with sEMG measurements using Pearson’s product–moment correlation coefficients. Results: Myotonometer and sEMG measurement correlations ranged from −0.70 to −0.90. The strongest correlations to sEMG were from Myotonometer force measurements between 1.00 and 2.00 kg. Conclusions: Myotonometer and sEMG measurements were highly correlated. Tissue stiffness, as measured by the Myotonometer, appears capable of assessing changes in muscle activation levels.  相似文献
