Over the last decades a variety of research has been conducted with the goal to improve the Body Segment Inertial Parameters (BSIP) estimations but to our knowledge a real validation has never been completely successful, because no ground truth is available. The aim of this paper is to propose a validation method for a BSIP identification method (IM) and to confirm the results by comparing them with recalculated contact forces using inverse dynamics to those obtained by a force plate. Furthermore, the results are compared with the recently proposed estimation method by Dumas et al. (2007). Additionally, the results are cross validated with a high velocity overarm throwing movement. Throughout conditions higher correlations, smaller metrics and smaller RMSE can be found for the proposed BSIP estimation (IM) which shows its advantage compared to recently proposed methods as of Dumas et al. (2007). The purpose of the paper is to validate an already proposed method and to show that this method can be of significant advantage compared to conventional methods.  相似文献

The relationship between mechanical work and metabolic energy cost during movement is not yet clear. Many studies demonstrated the utility of forward-dynamic musculoskeletal models combined with experimental data to address such question. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of a muscle energy expenditure model at whole body level, using an EMG-driven approach.Four participants performed a 5-min squat exercise on unilateral leg press at two different frequencies and two load levels. Data collected were kinematics, EMG, forces and moments under the foot and gas-exchange data. This same task was simulated using a musculoskeletal model, which took EMG and kinematics as inputs and gave muscle forces and muscle energetics as outputs. Model parameters were taken from literature, but maximal isometric muscle force was optimized in order to match predicted joint moments with measured ones. Energy rates predicted by the model were compared with energy consumption measured by the gas-exchange data.Model results on metabolic energy consumption were close to the values obtained through indirect calorimetry. At the higher frequency level, the model underestimated measured energy consumption. This underestimation can be explained with an increase in energy consumption of the non-muscular mass with movement velocity. In conclusion, results obtained in comparing model predictions with experimental data were promising. More research is needed to evaluate this way of computing mechanical and metabolic work.  相似文献

Video-based field methods that estimate L5/S1 net joint moments from kinematics based on interpolation in the sagittal plane of joint angles alone can introduce a significant error on the interpolated joint angular trajectory when applied to asymmetric dynamic lifts. Our goal was to evaluate interpolation of segment Euler angles for a wide range of dynamic asymmetric lifting tasks using cubic spline methods by comparing the interpolated values with the continuous measured ones. For most body segments, the estimated trajectories of segment Euler angles have less than 5° RMSE (in each dimension) with 5-point cubic spline interpolation when there is no measurement error of interpolation points. Sensitivity analysis indicates that when the measurement error exists, the root mean square error (RMSE) of estimated trajectories increases. Comparison among different lifting conditions showed that lifting a load from a high initial position yielded a smaller RMSE than lifting from a low initial position. In conclusion, interpolation of segment Euler angles can provide a robust estimation of segment angular trajectories during asymmetric lifting when measurement error of interpolation points can be controlled at a low level.  相似文献

Presently, there is little consensus about how, or even if, axial preload should be incorporated in spine flexibility tests in order to simulate the compressive loads naturally present in vivo. Some preload application methods are suspected of producing unwanted “artefact” forces as the specimen rotates and, in doing so, influencing the resulting kinematics. The objective of this study was to quantitatively compare four distinct types of preload which have roots in contemporary experimental practice. The specific quantities compared were the reaction moments and forces resulting at the intervertebral disc and specimen kinematics. The preload types incorporated increasing amounts of caudal constraint on the preload application vector ranging from an unconstrained dead-load arrangement to an apparatus that allowed the vector to follow rotations of the specimen. Six human cadaveric spine segments were tested (1-L1/L2, 3-L2/L3, 1-L3/L4 and 1-L4/L5). Pure moments were applied to the specimens with each of the four different types of compressive preload. Kinematic response was measured using an opto-electronic motion analysis system. A six-axis load cell was used to measure reaction forces and moments. Artefact reaction moments and shear forces were significantly affected by preload application method and magnitude. Unconstrained preload methods produced high artefact moments and low artefact shear forces while more constrained methods did the opposite. A mechanical trade-off is suggested by our results, whereby unwanted moment can only be prevented at the cost of shear force production. When comparing spine flexibility studies, caution should be exercised to ensure preload was applied in a similar manner for all studies. Unwanted moments or forces induced as a result of preload application method may render the comparison of two seemingly similar studies inappropriate.  相似文献

Conventional electromyography-driven (EMG) musculoskeletal models are calibrated during maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) tasks, but individuals with low back pain cannot perform unbiased MVCs. To address this issue, EMG-driven models can be calibrated in submaximal tasks. However, the effects of maximal (when data points include the maximum contraction) and submaximal calibration techniques on model outputs (e.g., muscle forces, spinal loads) remain yet unknown. We calibrated a subject-specific EMG-driven model, using maximal/submaximal isometric contractions, and simulated different independent tasks. Both approaches satisfactorily predicted external moments (Pearson’s correlation ∼ 0.75; relative error = 44%), and removing calibration tasks under axial torques markedly improved the model performance (Pearson’s correlation ∼ 0.92; relative error ∼ 28%). Unlike individual muscle forces, gross (aggregate) model outputs (i.e., spinal loads, stability index, and sum of abdominal/back muscle forces) estimated from maximal and submaximal calibration techniques were highly correlated (r > 0.78). Submaximal calibration method overestimated spinal loads (6% in average) and abdominal muscle forces (11% in average). Individual muscle forces estimated from maximal and submaximal approaches were substantially different; however, gross model outputs (especially internal loads and stability index) remained highly correlated with small to moderate relative differences; therefore, the submaximal calibration technique can be considered as an alternative to the conventional maximal calibration approach.  相似文献

Motion capture systems are widely used to measure human kinematics. Nevertheless, users must consider system errors when evaluating their results. Most validation techniques for these systems are based on relative distance and displacement measurements. In contrast, our study aimed to analyse the absolute volume accuracy of optical motion capture systems by means of engineering surveying reference measurement of the marker coordinates (uncertainty: 0.75 mm). The method is exemplified on an 18 camera OptiTrack Flex13 motion capture system. The absolute accuracy was defined by the root mean square error (RMSE) between the coordinates measured by the camera system and by engineering surveying (micro-triangulation). The original RMSE of 1.82 mm due to scaling error was managed to be reduced to 0.77 mm while the correlation of errors to their distance from the origin reduced from 0.855 to 0.209. A simply feasible but less accurate absolute accuracy compensation method using tape measure on large distances was also tested, which resulted in similar scaling compensation compared to the surveying method or direct wand size compensation by a high precision 3D scanner. The presented validation methods can be less precise in some respects as compared to previous techniques, but they address an error type, which has not been and cannot be studied with the previous validation methods.  相似文献

Spatial correlation modeling comprises both spatial autocorrelation and spatial cross-correlation processes. The spatial autocorrelation theory has been well-developed. It is necessary to advance the method of spatial cross-correlation analysis to supplement the autocorrelation analysis. This paper presents a set of models and analytical procedures for spatial cross-correlation analysis. By analogy with Moran’s index newly expressed in a spatial quadratic form, a theoretical framework is derived for geographical cross-correlation modeling. First, two sets of spatial cross-correlation coefficients are defined, including a global spatial cross-correlation coefficient and local spatial cross-correlation coefficients. Second, a pair of scatterplots of spatial cross-correlation is proposed, and the plots can be used to visually reveal the causality behind spatial systems. Based on the global cross-correlation coefficient, Pearson’s correlation coefficient can be decomposed into two parts: direct correlation (partial correlation) and indirect correlation (spatial cross-correlation). As an example, the methodology is applied to the relationships between China’s urbanization and economic development to illustrate how to model spatial cross-correlation phenomena. This study is an introduction to developing the theory of spatial cross-correlation, and future geographical spatial analysis might benefit from these models and indexes.  相似文献

Muscle force partitioning methods and musculoskeletal system simplifications are key modeling issues that can alter outcomes, and thus change conclusions and recommendations addressed to health and safety professionals. A critical modeling concern is the use of single-joint equilibrium to estimate muscle forces and joint loads in a multi-joint system, an unjustified simplification made by most lumbar spine biomechanical models. In the context of common occupational tasks, an EMG-assisted optimization method (EMGAO) is modified in this study to simultaneously account for the equilibrium at all lumbar joints (M-EMGAO). The results of this improved approach were compared to those of its conventional single-joint equivalent (S-EMGAO) counterpart, the latter method being applied to the same lumbar joints but one at a time. Despite identical geometrical configurations and passive contributions used in both models, computed outcomes clearly differed between single- and multi-joint methods, especially at larger trunk flexed postures and during asymmetric lifting. Moreover, muscle forces predicted by L5-S1 single-joint analyses do not maintain mechanical equilibrium at other spine joints crossed by the same muscles. Assuming that the central nervous system does not attempt to balance the external moments one joint at a time and that a given muscle cannot exert different forces at different joints, the proposed multi-joint method represents a substantial improvement over its single-joint counterpart. This improved approach, hence, resolves trunk muscle forces with biological integrity but without compromising mechanical equilibrium at the lumbar joints.  相似文献

Genetic and phenotypic variance/covariance matrices are a fundamental measure of the amount of variation and the pattern of association among traits for current investigations in evolutionary biology. Still, few methods have been developed to accomplish the goal of pinpointing in which traits two matrices differ most, hampering further works on the field. We here described a novel method for dissecting matrix comparisons. This method is called Selection Response Decomposition and is an extension of the random skewers in the sense that evolutionary responses produced by known simulated selection vectors are unfolded and then compared in terms of the direct and indirect responses to selection for any trait. We also applied the method in diverse case studies, illustrating its potential. Both theoretical matrices and empirical biological data were used in the comparisons made. In the theoretical ones, the method was able to determine exactly which traits were responsible for the known a priori differences between the matrices, as well as where matrices remained similar to each other. Similar support could be observed in comparisons carried on between matrices produced from empirical biological data, since reasonable and detailed interpretations could be made regarding matrix comparisons. SRD represents an excellent tool for matrix comparisons and should provide quantitative evolutionary biology with a new method for analyzing and comparing variance/covariance patterns.  相似文献

An integrated fate and effects model was constructed to simulate direct and indirect effects of chlorpyrifos in experimental indoor ecosystems (microcosms) without macrophytes. These microcosms resembled the ubiquitous drainage ditches in the Netherlands. Observed densities of algae, zooplankton and macrofauna were converted to biomass (g DW m−2) for calibration of a bio-energetics model based on functional groups. The fate of chlorpyrifos could be simulated well by calibrating the sorption coefficient for organic carbon, diffusion rate to the sediment and degradation rates in water and sediment. Direct effects were simulated by integrating a sigmoidal concentration-effect relationship with the population growth model for functional groups. It was hypothesized that indirect effects resulted mostly from resource competition. Functional groups were divided in sensitive and insensitive subgroups to allow such model behaviour. Direct effects of chlorpyrifos affected all arthropods in the microcosms which the model could replicate with reasonable accuracy. Recovery of sensitive zooplankton (consisting of cladocerans and copepods) occurred faster in the microcosms than in the simulation. Indirect effects on algae, rotifers, shredders and tubificids resulted from the direct effects as incorporated in the model. Except for algae, simulations showed good qualitative agreement with observed indirect effects, but no exact quantitative match could be obtained. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Organisms experience a complex suite of species interactions. Although the ecological consequences of direct versus indirect species interactions have received attention, their evolutionary implications are not well understood. I examined selection on floral traits through direct versus indirect pathways of species interactions using the plant Ipomopsis aggregata and its pollinators and nectar robber. Using path analysis and structural equation modeling, I tested competing hypotheses comparing the relative importance of direct (pollinator-mediated) versus indirect (robber-mediated) interactions to trait selection through female plant function in 2 years. The hypothesis that provided the best fit to the observed data included robbing and pollination, suggesting that both interactors are important in driving selection on some traits; however, the direction and intensity of selection through robbing versus pollination varied between years. I then increased my scope of inference by assessing traits and species interactions across more years. I found that the potential for temporal variation in the direction and intensity of selection was pronounced. Taken together, results suggest that assessing the broader context in which organisms evolve, including both direct and indirect interactions and across multiple years, can provide increased mechanistic understanding of the diversity of ways that animals shape floral and plant evolution.  相似文献

Inherent flexibility and conformational heterogeneity in proteins can often result in the absence of loops and even entire domains in structures determined by x-ray crystallographic or NMR methods. X-ray solution scattering offers the possibility of obtaining complementary information regarding the structures of these disordered protein regions. Methods are presented for adding missing loops or domains by fixing a known structure and building the unknown regions to fit the experimental scattering data obtained from the entire particle. Simulated annealing was used to minimize a scoring function containing the discrepancy between the experimental and calculated patterns and the relevant penalty terms. In low-resolution models where interface location between known and unknown parts is not available, a gas of dummy residues represents the missing domain. In high-resolution models where the interface is known, loops or domains are represented as interconnected chains (or ensembles of residues with spring forces between the C(alpha) atoms), attached to known position(s) in the available structure. Native-like folds of missing fragments can be obtained by imposing residue-specific constraints. After validation in simulated examples, the methods have been applied to add missing loops or domains to several proteins where partial structures were available.  相似文献

An instrumented wheel system for three-dimensional kinetic analysis of upper extremity during wheelchair propulsion has been designed and validated. This system allows the direct measurements of three-dimensional dynamic forces and moments on the handrim during wheelchair propulsion in a laboratory setting as well as in the field. Static loading tests showed a high linearity and little drift (coefficient of determination, r2 > 0.999). Under dynamic loading, the instrumented wheel provided the well-matched measurement forces and moments with the predicted values from the inverse dynamic method using video-based kinematic data (correlation coefficient, p > 0.97). The three-dimensional handrim forces and moments during wheelchair propulsion by a non-disabled subject were demonstrated.  相似文献

The basic aim of the present contribution is the qualitative simulation of healing phenomena typically encountered in hard and soft tissue mechanics. The mechanical framework is provided by the theory of open system thermodynamics, which will be formulated in the spatial as well as in the material motion context. While the former typically aims at deriving the density and the spatial motion deformation field in response to given spatial forces, the latter will be applied to determine the material forces in response to a given density and material deformation field. We derive a general computational framework within the finite element context that will serve to evaluate both the spatial and the material motion problem. However, once the spatial motion problem has been solved, the solution of the material motion problem represents a mere post-processing step and is thus extremely cheap from a computational point of view. The underlying algorithm will be elaborated systematically by means of two prototype geometries subjected to three different representative loading scenarios, tension, torsion, and bending. Particular focus will be dedicated to the discussion of the additional information provided by the material force method. Since the discrete material node point forces typically point in the direction of potential material deposition, they can be interpreted as a driving force for the healing mechanism.Blues the healer, John Lee Hooker [1989]  相似文献

We still know very little about how the environment influences coevolutionary dynamics. Here, we investigated both theoretically and empirically how nutrient availability affects the relative extent of escalation of resistance and infectivity (arms race dynamic; ARD) and fluctuating selection (fluctuating selection dynamic; FSD) in experimentally coevolving populations of bacteria and viruses. By comparing interactions between clones of bacteria and viruses both within‐ and between‐time points, we show that increasing nutrient availability resulted in coevolution shifting from FSD, with fluctuations in average infectivity and resistance ranges over time, to ARD. Our model shows that range fluctuations with lower nutrient availability can be explained both by elevated costs of resistance (a direct effect of nutrient availability), and reduced benefits of resistance when population sizes of hosts and parasites are lower (an indirect effect). Nutrient availability can therefore predictably and generally affect qualitative coevolutionary dynamics by both direct and indirect (mediated through ecological feedbacks) effects on costs of resistance.  相似文献

Physical activity in children is important as it leads to healthy growth due to physiological benefits. However, a physiological benefit can be partially negated by excessive or unphysiological loads within the joints. To gain an initial understanding into this, the present study sought to compare joint loading between walking and cycling in children. With institutional ethical approval, 14 pre-pubertal children aged 8–12 walked on an instrumented treadmill and cycled on a stationary ergometer. Two methods were used to match physiological load. Cardiovascular loads between walking and cycling were matched using heart rate. Metabolic load was normalised by matching estimates of oxygen consumption. Joint reaction forces during cycling and walking as well as joint moments were derived using inverse dynamics. Peak compressive forces were greater on the knees and ankles during walking than during cycling. Peak shear peak forces at the knee and ankle were also significantly larger during walking than during cycling, independent of how physiological load was normalised. For both cycling conditions, ankle moments were significantly smaller during cycling than walking. No differences were found for knee moments. At equivalent physiological intensities, cycling results in less joint loading than walking. It can be speculated that for certain populations and under certain conditions cycling might be a more suitable mode of exercise than weight bearing activities to achieve a given metabolic load.  相似文献

Musculoskeletal modeling allows for the determination of various parameters during dynamic maneuvers by using in vivo kinematic and ground reaction force (GRF) data as inputs. Differences between experimental and model marker data and inconsistencies in the GRFs applied to these musculoskeletal models may not produce accurate simulations. Therefore, residual forces and moments are applied to these models in order to reduce these differences. Numerical optimization techniques can be used to determine optimal tracking weights of each degree of freedom of a musculoskeletal model in order to reduce differences between the experimental and model marker data as well as residual forces and moments. In this study, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and simplex simulated annealing (SIMPSA) algorithms were used to determine optimal tracking weights for the simulation of a sidestep cut. The PSO and SIMPSA algorithms were able to produce model kinematics that were within 1.4° of experimental kinematics with residual forces and moments of less than 10 N and 18 Nm, respectively. The PSO algorithm was able to replicate the experimental kinematic data more closely and produce more dynamically consistent kinematic data for a sidestep cut compared to the SIMPSA algorithm. Future studies should use external optimization routines to determine dynamically consistent kinematic data and report the differences between experimental and model data for these musculoskeletal simulations.  相似文献

The interaction of forces that produce chest wall motion and lung volume change is complex and incompletely understood. To aid understanding we have developed a simple model that allows prediction of the effect on chest wall motion of changes in applied forces. The model is a lever system on which the forces generated actively by the respiratory muscles and passively by impedances of rib cage, lungs, abdomen, and diaphragm act at fixed sites. A change in forces results in translational and/or rotational motion of the lever; motion represents volume change. The distribution and magnitude of passive relative to active forces determine the locus and degree of rotation and therefore the effect of an applied force on motion of the chest wall, allowing the interaction of diaphragm, rib cage, and abdomen to be modeled. Analysis of moments allow equations to be derived that express the effect on chest wall motion of the active component in terms of the passive components. These equations may be used to test the model by comparing predicted with empirical behavior. The model is simple, appears valid for a variety of respiratory maneuvers, is useful in interpreting relative motion of rib cage and abdomen and may be useful in quantifying the effective forces acting on the rib cage.  相似文献
