Distribution and phenology of large branchiopods in Austria   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Eder  Erich  Hödl  Walter  Gottwald  Renate 《Hydrobiologia》1997,359(1-3):13-22
In Austria, the distribution of Anostraca, Notostraca, and Conchostraca is mainly confined to the floodplains of the rivers Morava and Danube, and the shallow alkaline pans of the Seewinkel region in Burgenland province. Occasionally, large branchiopods can also be found in rain pools of the eastern and central Austrian lowlands, where topography and climate favour the existence of astatic water bodies. Differences in hydrology, temperature and water chemistry requirements may be reflected in local species compositions and species seasonal appearance. A survey conducted from 1994 through 1996 found that Chirocephalus shadini, Eubranchipusgrubii, and Lepidurus apus occurred in late winter and spring, while Branchinecta ferox, Branchinecta orientalis, Cyzicus tetracerus and Chirocephalus carnuntanus were found exclusively in spring. Streptocephalus torvicornis, Tanymastixstagnalis, and Eoleptestheria ticinensis were present in spring and summer. Branchipus schaefferi was found in summer and fall, whereas Imnadia yeyetta, Leptestheria dahalacensis, Limnadialenticularis, and Triops cancriformis occurred throughout spring, summer and fall. Streptocephalus torvicornis was documented for Austria for the first time since 1965. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The dimensional specifications and morphology of the resting eggs of ten conchostracan species (Cyzicus tetracerus, Eocyzicus orientalis, Caenestheria davidi, C. perrieri, Leptestheria dahalacensis, Eoleptestheria ticinensis, Limnadia lenticularis, Imnadia yeyetta, Lynceus brachyurus, and L. dauricus) have been studied. The data are presented on the number of eggs produced by females. Unlike other crustaceans, no correlation between the eggs size and their quantity was found. Although the number of eggs can vary one to two times, their size is relatively stable (variation coefficient <5%). The wet (1.5–5.4 μg) and dry (0.41–0.93 μg) weights of eggs and the share of clutch (11.4–21.6%) in the female’s wet weight were determined for eight species. The polyfunctionality of the external envelope of the egg was considered under anhydrobiosis conditions.  相似文献

According to recent literature, five of the six known Austrian conchostracan species are extinct. However, interim results of a current study on large freshwater branchiopods in Austria show that five species still occur at a restricted number of sites in the Pannonian region of Lower Austria. The clam shrimps Leptestheria dahalacensis and Eoleptestheria ticinensis were rediscovered in May 1994 in the flood plains of the river Morava near Marchegg. Imnadia yeyetta and Cyzicus tetracerus have been known to the authors in the same region since 1981, and 1992, respectively. Limnadia lenticularis occurs in the flood plains of the rivers Morava and Danube. Lynceus brachyurus, the only Austrian representative of the Laevicaudata, was not found and most probably got extinct. All Austrian clam shrimp species are considered to be endangered. Main threats are agricultural activities and artificial changes of the hydrologic conditions. Conservational measures are discussed for their effectivity.  相似文献

This paper presents a SEM documentation of the larval development of the two most abundant Austrian conchostracan species, Imnadia yeyetta (Limnadiidae) and Leptestheria dahalacensis (Leptestheriidae). As in several previously examined spinicaudatan species, five larval stages were documented: Nauplius 1, Nauplius 2, Metanauplius, Peltatulus, and Heilophore. Additionally, three postlarval stages of L. dahalacensis and the first larval instars of Eoleptestheria ticinensis and Limnadia lenticularis are shown and compared with the examined stages. Species identification of conchostracan larval stages is possible by using surface structures, and using SEM methods, except for L. lenticularis which can be identified more easily on the characteristic shape of the labrum.  相似文献

1. To monitor the diversity and distribution patterns of large branchiopods and the effects of local and regional processes, 30 temporary wetlands in a nature reserve in the Camargue (southern France) were sampled and characterised during three consecutive inundations (2005–08). Additional species were added to the list for each wetland by hatching animals from the resting egg bank, after determining the optimal hatching conditions.
2. A total of five species were found, representing 28% of the species known in France and 56% of the known Camargue species. Tanymastix stagnalis , Branchipus schaefferi , Chirocephalus diaphanus (Anostraca), Triops cancriformis (Notostraca) and Imnadia yeyetta (Spinicaudata) were distributed over a total of 19 wetlands.
3. More than one species was present in 79% of the wetlands containing large branchiopods. Individual wetlands harboured on average 2.8 species, with a maximum of five coexisting species. Large branchiopod assemblages were temporally variable, differing among the three inundations with different climatological conditions.
4. The most important habitat factor influencing the distribution of large branchiopods was salinity, adversely affecting the density and survival of hatchlings. The persistence of large branchiopods in these temporary waters may be threatened by increasing salinisation driven by intensive water management and climate change.  相似文献

Chitin was assayed in adults of nine anostracan species (Streptocephalus dichotomus, S. proboscideus, S. simplex, S. torvicornis, Thamnocephalus platyurus, Dendrocephalus brasiliensis, Chirocephalus diaphanus, Artemia salina and Branchipus schaefferi) using a highly specific enzymatic method. Cysts of A. salina, T. platyurus and larvae of A. salina and S. simplex were also analysed for their chitin content. The results demonstrated a weak interspecific variation in chitin content among the adults. On the whole, it ranged from 9 to 33 mg chitin (g dry mass)−1. In most species, the chitin level was not significantly different between males and females. In contrast, chitin levels varied significantly between cysts, larvae and adults within species. Comparison of the chitin content of anostracans revealed a comparable or lower chitin level than other crustaceans. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The tertiary shell of the eggs of anostracan crustaceans consists of two layers, an outer cortex and an inner alveolar layer. Scanning electron microscope studies show that, in most species, these layers are separated by a subcortical space which intercommunicates with spaces in the cortex and with the meshwork of the alveolar layer. No evidence was found for direct communication between pores on the surface of Branchipus stagnalis eggs and the subcortical space. No surface pores were found in the eggs of Branchinecta packardi, Chirocephalus diaphanus, Artemia salina, nor in eggs of the notostracan Triops cancriformis. Similarities in structure and possible functions of the egg shells of anostracan crustaceans and certain insects are discussed in relation to similarities in certain features of their environments.  相似文献

Summary The heart ultrastructure of the anostracan Crustacea Branchinecta paludosa, Artemia salina, Branchipus schaefferi, and Streptocephalus sp. is essentially similar. All lack an endocardium and an epicardium, and the heart wall consists of a single layered myocardium. Only in the posterior end of the heart does the myocardium form a tube. In the remaining, anterior part of the heart, the myocardium forms a trough. The dorsal edges of this trough are firmly attached to the basement membrane of the epidermis, which thus forms the lid of the trough. The Z-bands of the sarcomere are diffuse, and H- and M-bands were not seen. Interior couplings are as a rule found at Z-levels.This work was supported by grants from the Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities  相似文献

During these investigations the following species of Anostraca have been found: Chirocephalus diaphanus Prevost 1803, Chirocephalus brevipalpis (Orghidan, 1953), Streptocephalus torvicornis Waga 1892, Branchipus serbicus Marinek & Petrov 1988, Branchipus stagnalis L. (1758) and Branchipus sp. Thus, the total number of species discovered in Yugoslavia is 13.The shape of the frontal shield and the degree of flexure of the distal articles of antennae II in males are of no relevance to taxonomy in the genus Branchipus Schaeffer 1776. However, the apophyses on antennae II in males, shape of antennae II and of the ovisac in females, structure of eggs, and of appendages appear species-specific. We conclude that the differentiation of B. stagnalis into two forms (forma typica and forma visnyai) as well as the separation of B. visnyai Kertész 1956 as a distinct species are unfounded.  相似文献

A survey of large branchiopods in the Banat provincein Yugoslavia revealed a particularly diverse fauna in the vicinity of the village Melenci, 100 km north of Belgrade. The temporary ponds here include 10 species of branchiopods, 5 anostracans, 2 notostracans and 3conchostracans (all belonging to the Spinicaudata group). This diversity represents 53% of the species known in Yugoslavia. Community structure, spatial distribution and seasonal dynamics of the species were analyzed over the period 1991–1995. More than one species was found in about 67% of ponds. The maximum number of coexisting species was 7.Anostracans were the most common as a group, while the notostracan Triops cancriformis and the conchostracan Leptestheria saetosa were the most frequent species. A high frequency of coexistence was established. Regarding community structure, two significantly different periods during the season were distinguished: the first, from the end of February to mid-April, and the second, from mid-April to the end of July. This extensive pool longevity may underlie the high diversity in this region. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Anostraca of the Indian Subcontinent   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
There are 15 species of Anostraca belonging to 6 genera on the Indian Subcontinent. These are:Artemia sp. (reportedly a bisexual form of undetermined species);Artemia parthenogenetica Bowen & Sterling, 1978;Branchinecta orientalis Sars, 1901;Branchinella hardingi (Qadri & Baqai, 1956);Branchinella kugenumaensis (Ishikawa, 1895);Branchinella ornata Daday, 1910;Branchipodopsis acanthopenes (Malhotra & Duda, 1970);Branchipodopsis affinis Sars, 1901;Branchipus schaefferi Fischer, 1834;Chirocephalus priscus (Daday, 1910);Streptocephalus dichotomus Baird, 1860;Streptocephalus echinus Bond, 1934;Streptocephalus longimanus Bond, 1934;Streptocephalus simplex Gurney, 1906;Streptocephalus spinifer Gurney, 1906.Comparing numbers of species for southern India with other reasonably well studied areas, demonstrated that anostracan species richness is higher in the climatically more varied temperate regions than it is in the more uniform tropics. Tropical South India has six species compared to 13 in Arizona (USA), 19 in California (USA), 10 in Morocco, and 14 in Italy.  相似文献

Fine structure and function of ocelli and sagittocysts of acoel flatworms   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
We studied the taxonomy and distribution of the Conchostraca in Yugoslavia. A diverse fauna occurs in the country. However, the systematics of this group is still incomplete and has many problems. There is considerable variability of morphological characters. By a comparative-morphological analysis of the populations found, we re-evaluated the taxonomic significance of a series of structural characters, and offer comments on the results. In Yugoslavia four families were found: Cyzicidae Stebbing, 1910; Limnadiidae Burmeister, 1843; Imnadiidae Botnariuc & Orghidan, 1941 and Leptestheriidae Daday, 1923, with a present total of 8 species and 4 subspecies. Within the genus Imnadia Hertzog, 1935, three new species were found: Imnadia cristata Marinek, 1972; Imnadia banatica Marinek & Valvajter, 1982 and Imnadia panonica Marinek & Petrov, 1984. Within the genus Eoleptestheria Daday, 1923, the species Eoleptestheria spinosa Marinek, 1978, with four distinct subspecies was discovered.  相似文献

Many endemic large branchiopods inhabit ephemeral freshwater ecosystems, including California vernal pools. Hydroperiod, inundation length, has been well studied in these systems that cycle between aquatic and terrestrial phases, but species’ responses to other ecological processes are still poorly known. For example, temporal (plant thatch from the previous terrestrial phase) and spatial (nutrient runoff) factors may have strong effects on emergence and population densities during the aquatic phase. We examined the effects of hydroperiod stability, thatch, and nutrients on the emergence and density of 4 vernal pool endemic species: Branchinecta lynchi (Anostraca), Linderiella occidentalis (Anostraca), Lepidurus packardi (Notostraca), and Cyzicus californicus (Spinicaudata). A full factorial mesocosm experiment was conducted which measured species densities, along with water quality variables. Hydroperiod and thatch differentially affected 3 of the 4 species based on emergence timing and life cycle. Treatments had effects on many water quality variables, and these variables were correlated with densities. These results highlight how hydroperiod stability along with other processes can affect large branchiopod species in temporary freshwater ecosystems. California vernal pools are a greatly reduced habitat rich in endemic and endangered species (including Branchinecta lynchi and Lepidurus packardi), and therefore, these results have implications for conservation and management.  相似文献

We report the finding of three anostracan species, Chirocephalus skorikowi Daday, 1913, Branchinecta orientalis Sars, 1901 and Branchinella spinosa. Milne-Edwards, 1840 in different localities in northwestern Iran. C. skorikowi was recorded in a lake at an elevation of 2400 m, whereas B. orientalis was found in a pond at 1280 m a.s.l. Co-existing B. spinosa and B. orientalis were collected in a pool close to the town of Tabriz, formerly indicated by Brehm (1954) as Estakr Chah, presently named EalGoli. Unlike Brehm (1954), we did not find Streptocephalus in the area of Tabriz.  相似文献

Between 1995 and 1999, we surveyed the large branchiopods (Crustacea, Branchiopoda) of Numidia, the coastal plain of northeastern Algeria. Samples from ca 100 sites yielded two species of Anostraca (Chirocephalus diaphanus, new to Numidia, and Tanymastix stagnalis), one notostracan (Lepidurus apus lubbocki) and one spinicaudatan (Cyzicus tetracerus). The absence of Streptocephalus torvicornis buchetiis noteworthy. An annotated check-list of all large branchiopods known from Algeria is also presented and discussed. Several species appear to be in danger of extinction.  相似文献

A survey of more than 60 ephemeral pools during March 1989 resulted in finding three large branchiopods not previously known to occur on the Caribbean Island of Aruba. These were two Anostraca, Dendrocephalus spartaenovae Margalef, 1967 and Thamnocephalus venezuelensis Belk & Pereira, 1982, and one Spinicaudata, Leptestheria venezuelica Daday, 1923. The notostracan previously reported from Aruba, Triops longicaudatus (LeConte, 1846), was also collected from several pools. All of these species occur also in Venezuela, which is separated from Aruba by an ocean gap of about 25 km. Comparison of Leptestheria venezuelica with Leptestheria compleximanus (Packard, 1877) demonstrated that cephalic morphology provides useful taxonomic features including length of rostrum, depth of occipital notch, shape of the occipital region, and protrusion of the eye capsule. These features may prove useful in studying other species of Leptestheria.  相似文献

The neuronal types and patterns in the visual system of the species Artemia salina and Daphina magna have been studied with the Golgi method and electron microscopy. The lamina contains five classes of neurons: photoreceptor axons, monopolar, centrifugal, tangential and amacrine neurons. The terminals of the receptor axons are distributed in two (A. salina) or three (D. magna) layers. The dilated terminals have an extensive and wide array of fine branches. One axon from each ommatidium bypasses the lamina and terminates in the medula in A. salina. A. salina has four types of monopolar neurons, two of which are stratified, whereas in D. magna only two types are found, one of which is bistratified. Tangential T-neurons connect the lamina with the protocerebrum. D. magna has in addition one tangential T-neuron connecting both the lamina and the medulla with the protocerebrum. In both species monopolar-type centrifugal neurons connect the medulla and the lamina, whereas that of A. salina has a wide laminar distribution. Both species also have amacrine cells in the lamina. The medulla contains, besides those shared with the lamina, transmedullary neurons (two types in A. salina), amacrine cells and neurons originating in the protocerebrum. "Cartridge"-type synaptic compartments are lacking in the investigated species, although a periodic arrangement is discernible in the distal portion of the lamina of A. salina. The receptors from three types of specialized contacts in Artemia, one of which involves a dyad. D. magna has only one-to-one synapses. Neurosecretory fibres are absent in A. salina.  相似文献
