Free‐floating Ulva prolifera is one of the causative species of green tides. When green tides occur, massive mats of floating U. prolifera thalli accumulate rapidly in surface waters with daily growth rates as high as 56%. The upper thalli of the mats experience environmental changes such as the change in carbon source, high salinity, and desiccation. In this study, the photosynthetic performances of PSI and PSII in U. prolifera thalli exposed to different atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels were measured. Changes in photosynthesis within salinity treatments and dehydration under different CO2 concentrations were also analyzed. The results showed that PSII activity was enhanced as CO2 increased, suggesting that CO2 assimilation was enhanced and U. prolifera thalli can utilize CO2 in the atmosphere directly, even when under moderate stress. In addition, changes in the proteome of U. prolifera in response to salt stress were investigated. Stress‐tolerance proteins appeared to have an important role in the response to salinity stress, whereas the abundance of proteins related to metabolism showed no significant change under low salinity treatments. These findings may be one of the main reasons for the extremely high growth rate of free‐floating U. prolifera when green tides occur.  相似文献

Ulva prolifera green tides, one of the greatest marine ecological disasters, originate in the southern Yellow Sea of China and obtain the highest biomass in Haizhou Bay (latitude around 35° N) during northward drift. Uprolifera shows different morphologies from southern Haizhou Bay (SH) to northern Haizhou Bay (NH). Owing to the distinct nutrient environments between SH and NH, we hypothesized that thalli in NH with poor nutrients increased the surface area to volume ratio (SA:VOL) to better absorb nutrients. Here, we tested this hypothesis by comparing the SA:VOL of thalli in SH and NH. The results showed that the thalli in NH had a lower SA:VOL than those in SH, and SA:VOL had positive relationships with temperature and nutrients, contrary to the general hypothesis. The novel results suggested that morphological differences of Uprolifera were the result of developmental state rather than environmental acclimation. Indicators of reproduction (reproductive allocation ratio) were negatively related to variation in tissue contents of C, N, P, and crude protein, whereas indicators of growth (tissue contents of C, N, P, and crude protein) showed significant positive influences on SA:VOL. The results indicated that a trade‐off relationship between reproduction and growth existed in the northward drift. All the results suggested that physiological functional traits affected morphological variation of Uprolifera in different environmental conditions during the drifting of green tides. This study presents new insights into the opportunist species nature of Uprolifera through morphological variation and associated functional consequences.  相似文献

Ulva prolifera, a common green seaweed, is one of the causative species of green tides that occurred frequently along the shores of Qingdao in 2008 and had detrimental effects on the preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games sailing competition, since more than 30 percent of the area of the games was invaded. In view of the rapid accumulation of the vast biomass of floating U. prolifera in green tides, we investigated the formation of sporangia in disks of different diameters excised from U. prolifera, changes of the photosynthetic properties of cells during sporangia formation, and development of spores. The results suggested that disks less than 1.00 mm in diameter were optimal for the formation of sporangia, but there was a small amount of spore release in these. The highest percentage of area of spore release occurred in disks that were 2.50 mm in diameter. In contrast, sporangia were formed only at the cut edges of larger disks (3.00 mm, 3.50 mm, and 4.00 mm in diameter). Additionally, the majority of spores liberated from the disks appeared vigorous and developed successfully into new individuals. These results implied that fragments of the appropriate size from the U. prolifera thalli broken by a variety of factors via producing spores gave rise to the rapid proliferation of the seaweed under field conditions, which may be one of the most important factors to the rapid accumulation of the vast biomass of U. prolifera in the green tide that occurred in Qingdao, 2008.  相似文献

Gloiopeltis furcata (Postels & Ruprecht) J. Agardh, a macroalga, which grows in an upper, intertidal zone, can withstand drastic environmental changes caused by the periodic tides. In this study, the photosynthetic and morphological characteristics of G. furcata were investigated. The photosynthetic performance and electron flows of the thalli showed significant variations in response to desiccation and salinity compared with the control group. Both PSII and PSI activities declined gradually when the thalli were under stress. However, the electron transport rate of PSI showed still a low value during severe conditions, while the rate of PSII approached zero. Furthermore, PSI activity of the treated thalli recovered faster than PSII after being submerged in seawater. Even though the linear electron flow was inhibited by DCMU [3-(3, 4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea], the cyclic electron flow could still be restored. The rate of cyclic electron flow recovery declined with the increasing time of dark treatment, which suggested that stromal reductants from starch degradation played an important role in the donation of electrons to PSI. This study demonstrated that PSII was more sensitive than PSI to desiccation and salinity in G. furcata and that the cyclic electron flow around PSI played a significant physiological role. In addition, G. furcata had branches, which were hollow inside and contained considerable quantities of funoran. These might be the most important factors in allowing G. furcata to adapt to adverse intertidal environments.  相似文献

Salt stress is a major abiotic stress factor that can induce many adverse effects on photosynthetic organisms. Plants and algae have developed several mechanisms that help them respond to adverse environments. Non‐photochemical quenching (NPQ) is one of these mechanisms. The thalli of algae in the intertidal zone that are attached to rocks can be subjected to salt stress for a short period of time due to the rise and fall of the tide. Ulva prolifera causes green tides and can form floating mats when green tides occur and the upper part of the thalli is subjected to high salt stress for a long period of time. In this study, we compared the Ulva prolifera photosynthetic activities and NPQ kinetics when it is subjected to different salinities over various periods of time. Thalli exposed to a salinity of 90 for 4 d showed enhanced NPQ, and photosynthetic activities decreased from 60 min after exposure up to 4 d. This indicated that the induction of NPQ in Ulva prolifera under salt stress was closely related to the stressing extent and stressing time. The enhanced NPQ in the treated samples exposed for 4 d may explain why the upper layer of the floating mats formed by Ulva prolifera thalli were able to survive in the harsh environment. Further inhibitor experiments demonstrated that the enhanced NPQ was xanthophyll cycle and transthylakoid proton gradient‐dependent. However, photosystem II subunit S and light‐harvesting complex stress‐related protein didn't over accumulate and may not be responsible for the enhanced NPQ.  相似文献

Low inorganic carbon (Ci) concentrations in seawater are usually an important factor controlling photosynthesis and growth of seaweeds. The green seaweed, Ulva conglobata Kjellm, collected from a rock pool in a middle intertidal zone located at Nanao Island, Shantou, China, were cultured under low Ci level for several days, to examine the effect of severe carbon limitation on photosynthesis. The rather high pH compensation points obtained from the pH-drift experiments indicated that U. conglobata was capable of acquiring HCO3 ? from surrounding seawater as its Ci source for photosynthesis. However, thalli of U. conglobata cultured in Ci-starved seawater exhibited a decline of biomass, showing that the realistic photosynthetic carbon gain could not compensate for the respiratory carbon consumption in the thalli under severe Ci limitation during laboratory culture. Compared with ambient Ci conditions, the culture under severe Ci limitation significantly had an increased pigment content, but a lower maximum quantum yield and photosynthetic electron transport rate. Additionally, the maximum carbon-saturating photosynthesis rate and the apparent photosynthetic conductance of U. conglobata thalli increased in cultures with severe Ci limitation compared with ambient Ci in low N-grown thalli. The results suggest that under severe Ci limitation, U. conglobata thalli increased capacities of both light absorption processes and carbon fixation pathways.  相似文献

Since 2007, reoccurring large-scale green algae blooms have caused deleterious effects to the estuarine ecosystem of Yellow Sea, northern China and subsequent economical losses. Previous surveys indicated the green tides were initiated in the coastal water of southern Jiangsu province where Porphyra farming was intensively conducted; however, the main ‘seed source’ of floating green algae is still under debate. Ulva prolifera was confirmed to be the major causative species of green tides. The multiple sympatric ulvoid species in the natural environment has complicated species identification in both field surveys and laboratory studies due to their morphological plasticity. Thus, we developed a genetic identification key based on restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the ITS nuclear marker to discriminate the common Ulva and Blidingia species in the Yellow Sea. Ten genetic lineages (1 in Blidingia, 9 in Ulva) were detected along the coast of China through phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequences. They can be separated by virtual restriction digestion using the four selected restriction enzymes (BspT107 I, EcoO109 I, Hin1 I and VpaK11B I). With additional PCR amplification of the 5S spacer region, we were able to discriminate U. prolifera from Ulva linza. Using this genetic key, we screened macroalgal samples collected from the coast of the Yellow Sea, and the results indicated 6 common lineages (U. prolifera, U. linza, Ulva compressa, Ulva pertusa, Clade 6 and Blidingia sp.) in this region, which could be explicitly distinguished by a single enzyme (BspT107 I) coupled with 5S spacer polymorphism. U. prolifera was confirmed to be present on the Porphyra aquaculture rafts with seasonal variation in the species composition. This genetic key will facilitate our long-term field surveys to investigate the origin of the floating U. prolifera and furthermore to explore its bloom dynamics along the coast of the Yellow Sea. It also provided a framework for the future inclusion of more Ulva species, which will expand the usage of this key.  相似文献

Bangia fuscopurpurea, an important farmed species in China, inhabits upper intertidal zones where it suffers periodical desiccation and salinity stress. However, the physiological response and acclimation mechanism of Bangia to abiotic stress is unknown. Here, the photosynthetic response of B. fuscopurpurea to desiccation and hyposalinity was investigated by using chlorophyll fluorescence measurement. The optimum photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), photochemical quenching (qP) and the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of B. fuscopurpurea thalli maintained at basal level when the absolute water content (AWC) was 32%. As AWC decreased from 32% to 9%, Fv/Fm dropped from 0.62 to 0.1 and NPQ increased from 0.2 to 1.2. No significant change occurred in the mean qP but great standard deviation was present as AWC was 9%. Fv/Fm, qP and NPQ of the thalli with 9% AWC fully recovered after rehydration. That B. fuscopurpurea kept high photosystem II photochemical reactions even when AWC was mere 32% enabled this species to survive extreme air drying at low tide. Fv/Fm and qP dropped while NPQ increased with 1 h of varying hyposaline treatment and they regained the basal levels after 6–24 h treatment. Nine days later, Fv/Fm, qP and NPQ levels of the thalli in 100% freshwater was equal to the control level (0.62, 0.9, 0.1, respectively). The present finding suggested that this alga has high photosynthetic capacity to survive during low tide, even during heavy rainfall. We hope this study would facilitate further investigation on the stress acclimation mechanism of B. fuscopurpurea.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the combined effects of simulated acid rain (SAR) and salinity on the physiological responses of macroalgae, Ulva prolifera was cultured under three salinity treatments (5, 10, 25 ‰) and at different pH, i.e., at pH 4.4 (C), pH 4.4(F), where the pH of the culture increased from 4.4 to approximately 7.8 during the cultivation period, or in absence of SAR at pH 8.2(C), at 100 μmol(photon) m–2 s–1 and 20°C. Compared to 25‰ salinity, Relative growth rate (RGR) of U. prolifera was enhanced by 10‰ salinity, but decreased by 5‰ salinity. No significant differences in RGR were observed between the pH 8.2(C) and pH 4.4(F) treatments, but the chlorophyll a content was reduced by SAR. Negative effects of SAR on the photosynthesis were observed, especially under low salinity treatments. Based on the results, we suggested that the U. prolifera showed a tolerance to a wide range of salinity in contrast to the low pH induced by acid rain.  相似文献

From 2008 to 2013, vast green tides mainly composed of Ulva prolifera consecutively invaded the coast of Qingdao (36°06′N, 120°25′E, PR China) in June and July. Previous studies have shown that the early green tides initially formed in the Porphyra yezoensis aquaculture area of the Subei Shoal, southern Yellow Sea. To date, multiple studies have demonstrated that green algae micro-propagules play an important role in the formation of green tides. In this study, we aimed to assess the temporal and spatial distribution of green algae micro-propagules in an extensive area of the Yellow Sea and to determine the species diversity of propagules during the development of the large-scale green tide. We found that the quantity of micro-propagules increased with the free-floating biomass from the initial generation to the development phase of the green tide in mid May. From late May to mid June, the micro-propagule density decreased sharply despite a continuous increase of the floating macroalgae biomass. In addition, our data indicate that the coastal area of the Subei Shoal has always been the distribution center of the micro-propagules, even prior to the large-scale green tide formation. Furthermore, diverse green algae species, including Ulva prolifera, Ulva linza, Ulva flexuosa, Ulva compressa, Ulva pertusa and Blidingia sp., were identified among the micro-propagules in the survey sea area. Finally, we determined that the distribution of U. prolifera micro-propagules is closely related to the floating algal mats and attached macroalgae on Porphyra aquaculture rafts.  相似文献

While interest in photosynthetic thermal acclimation has been stimulated by climate warming, comparing results across studies requires consistent terminology. We identify five types of photosynthetic adjustments in warming experiments: photosynthesis as measured at the high growth temperature, the growth temperature, and the thermal optimum; the photosynthetic thermal optimum; and leaf-level photosynthetic capacity. Adjustments of any one of these variables need not mean a concurrent adjustment in others, which may resolve apparently contradictory results in papers using different indicators of photosynthetic acclimation. We argue that photosynthetic thermal acclimation (i.e., that benefits a plant in its new growth environment) should include adjustments of both the photosynthetic thermal optimum (T opt) and photosynthetic rates at the growth temperature (A growth), a combination termed constructive adjustment. However, many species show reduced photosynthesis when grown at elevated temperatures, despite adjustment of some photosynthetic variables, a phenomenon we term detractive adjustment. An analysis of 70 studies on 103 species shows that adjustment of T opt and A growth are more common than adjustment of other photosynthetic variables, but only half of the data demonstrate constructive adjustment. No systematic differences in these patterns were found between different plant functional groups. We also discuss the importance of thermal acclimation of respiration for net photosynthesis measurements, as respiratory temperature acclimation can generate apparent acclimation of photosynthetic processes, even if photosynthesis is unaltered. We show that while dark respiration is often used to estimate light respiration, the ratio of light to dark respiration shifts in a non-predictable manner with a change in leaf temperature.  相似文献

In this paper, species compositions and seasonal variations of attached Ulva species on Porphyra aquaculture rafts and free floating Ulva species at Rudong coastal area, Jiangsu Province of China were investigated during 2010–2011. Based on the sequences analysis of nuclear-encoded ITS (including 5.8S rDNA regions) and 5S rDNA spacer regions, dominant species of both attached and free-floating Ulva samples were identified as Ulva compressa, Ulva linza, Ulva prolifera and Ulva flexuosa. Phylogenetic tree based on sequences of ITS and 5S rDNA spacer regions for attached and free-floating Ulva species was constructed, respectively. Species compositions of the Ulva population attached on aquaculture rafts varied with seasons, and U. prolifera was only found on aquaculture rafts in March 2011 during the 2010–2011 Porphyra yezoensis cultivation season, which had the same sequences of ITS and 5S rDNA spacer regions as that of the dominant species bloomed in the Yellow Sea of China in 2008. Dominant species of the free-floating Ulva population at the early stage of the green tide were U. compressa, U. flexuosa, and U. linza. Free-floating U. prolifera appeared in the middle of May, 2011. ITS sequence similarity rates of U. compressa and U. flexuosa between the attached and free-floating species were 100%. And ITS and 5S rDNA spacer sequences of the attached and the free-floating U. prolifera population also showed no differences. Further study showed that there were two types of free-floating U. prolifera population (Type 5S-A and Type 5S-B) based on 5S rDNA spacer sequences. The present study would provide some useful information for clarifying the outbreak mechanism of green tides occurred in the Yellow Sea, China.  相似文献

Planktonic larvae of estuarine crabs are commonly exported to the continental shelf for development and then return to coastal and estuarine areas as postlarvae (megalopae). Megalopae returning to estuaries must be adapted to survive in brackish water whereas those of coastally distributed species should not need such adaptations. We investigated 1) whether megalopae of the estuarine crab Callinectes sapidus and the coastal crab Callinectes similis undergo changes in salinity tolerance upon entry into an estuary and 2) what factors induce those changes. Megalopae were collected at a coastal site and a nearby estuarine site and exposed to a range of salinities (5, 10, 15, 20 and 30) for 6 h. Percent survival was determined after 24 h reintroduction to the collection site water. We also investigated 1) whether increased salinity tolerance was induced by reduced salinity or estuarine chemical cues, 2) the time to acclimation and 3) the salinity necessary for acclimation. C. sapidus megalopae from the estuarine site were more likely to survive exposure to low salinities than those from the coastal site. C. sapidus megalopae from the coastal site exhibited increased survival after acclimation to salinities of 27 and 23 for 12 h. Estuarine chemical cues had no effect on salinity tolerance. C. similis megalopae were less likely to survive at low salinities and did not exhibit an acclimation response upon exposure to reduced salinities. These results suggest that megalopae of C. sapidus are physiologically adapted to recruit to estuaries whereas megalopae of C. similis are unable to acclimate to low salinity conditions.  相似文献

In the Yellow Sea of China, large‐scale green tides have broken out for three consecutive years from 2007 to 2009. As part of the efforts to localize the algal source, two cruises were conducted in the early stage and the outbreak stage of the bloom in 2009. We analyzed the morphological and genetic diversity of drifting Ulva specimens and culture‐derived isolates from seawater sampled in different localities. For phylogenetic analyses, the nuclear encoded ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS nrDNA) and the plastid encoded large subunit of ribulose‐1, 5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxgenase gene (rbcL) were used. Our molecular and morphological data indicate that the dominant free‐floating Ulva species in 2008 and 2009 possibly belonged to a single strain of the U. linza‐procera‐prolifera (LPP) clade. The ITS sequences from bloom‐forming algal samples with dense branches were identical to those from U. linza‐like specimens without branches derived from the Yellow Sea. Microscopic individuals of the dominant Ulva strain were detected in eight stations, revealing that spore dispersal in the water helped to enlarge biomass in the water during the outbreak stage of green tide in the Yellow Sea.  相似文献

The effect of salinity on growth, photosynthetic performance and osmotic acclimation was investigated in the eulittoral red algal species Bangiopsis subsimplex (Stylonematophyceae). The strain grew in a broad salinity range between 1 and 70 psu showing optimum growth between 10 and 50 psu. The saturation point Ik of the photosynthesis irradiance curves ranged between 153 and 83 μmol photons m− 2 s− 1 at all salinities and indicates an adaptation of B. subsimplex to moderate radiation conditions. Adjustments on the photosynthetic level (non-photochemical quenching) were sufficient to prevent damage to the photosynthetic apparatus as Fv/Fm values were constantly high (> 0.7) even when grown at the most hypo- and hypersaline conditions. As main low molecular weight carbohydrates, B. subsimplex contains the heteroside digeneaside and the polyol sorbitol. Digeneaside concentration was low and almost unchanged after hypersaline treatment (< 20 μmol g− 1 DW), i.e. it did not play a role in osmotic acclimation. By contrast, sorbitol levels increased linearly from 150 to 380 μmol g− 1 DW with increasing salinities between 5 and 60 psu, indicating its important function as an osmolyte and compatible solute under hypersaline conditions. The data presented are consistent with the natural habitat of B. subsimplex, i.e. the upper eulittoral zone.  相似文献

Samples of the massive drifting green alga, Ulva linza, were collected from the coastal waters of the Yellow Sea, southwest of Korea, in early July 2009, and cultured under laboratory conditions. The effects of various temperature (10–30°C) and irradiance levels (0–1,000 μmol photons m−2 s−1) on photosynthesis, growth, and tissue nutrient content of U. linza were investigated in laboratory for both individuals of the late-stage vegetation (LSV) and the early-stage vegetation (ESV). After 1 h acclimation to various irradiance and temperature conditions, maximum gross photosynthetic rate of ESV was significantly higher than those of LSV. In the long-term (7-d) acclimation experiments to various irradiance and temperature levels, gross photosynthetic rates of ESV individuals were also significantly higher than those of LSV individuals. High photosynthetic rate of ESV individuals induced increase in mass of about 60% over the growth saturation irradiance (136 μmol photons m−2 s−1) and about 20% under low temperature conditions (10–15°C) during 7-d. The gross photosynthesis of LSV individuals was low when examined under temperature and irradiance conditions that were optimum for ESV growth. Consequently, free-floating U. linza exhibits cellular senescence beginning in early July in the Yellow Sea, and green tides formed by this species cannot be maintained beyond this time in the open sea. However, we expect that U. linza can proliferate quickly after settlement on new coastal habitats of the Yellow Sea because of the high tissue nitrogen utilization for photosynthesis in ESV, which is formed by germination of reproductive cells.  相似文献

Sargassum fusiforme, a species of brown seaweed with economic importance, inhabits lower intertidal zones where algae are often exposed to various stresses. In this study, changes in the photosynthetic performance of S. fusiforme under saline stress were investigated. The PSII performance in S. fusiforme significantly improved, when the thalli were exposed to 0% salinity, and remained high with prolonging treatment time. In contrast, the PSII activity declined considerably under salinities of 4.5 and 6%. The PSI activity did not change remarkably under saline stress, thus demonstrating higher tolerance to saline stress than PSII. In addition, the PSI activity could be also restored after saline treatments, when PSII was inhibited by 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. It might be as a result of changes in the NAD(P)H content in the thalli under saline stress. Our results suggested that PSI was much more tolerant to different saline stress than PSII in S. fusiforme. We demonstrated that S. fusiforme was much more tolerant to hyposaline than to hypersaline stress.  相似文献

As one of the main species causing “green tides”, Ulva prolifera always inhabits in estuarine areas with changes in salinity and nutrients. Reduced salinity may affect directly or indirectly the processes of uptake and assimilation of nitrate, in which the nitrate reductase (NR) activity play the crucial roles. In this experiment, we investigated the different effects of enriched nitrogen and phosphate on NR activity of Ulva prolifera at salinity 30, 15, and 5 psu. The results showed that when salinity being lowered NR activity decreased under no enrichment (CT) or PO4 3? enrichment condition. NO3 ? or combination with PO4 3? could significantly enhance NR activity at three salinities, among which the highest value occurred at 15 psu. Enrichment of NH4 + significantly decreased NR activity at 30 and 15 psu, but not at 5 psu. The results suggested NR of Ulva prolifera could be triggered by NO3 ?, especially at middle salinity, and keep low when exposed under hyposaline or NH4 + enrichment for long term to rapidly respond to pulse of NO3 ? in estuarine areas.  相似文献
