This paper records the identities of 558 ixodid ticks feeding on 194 humans in South Africa. These ticks belonged to 20 species in six genera and those most frequently encountered were Amblyomma hebraeum, Haemaphysalis leachi, Hyalomma marginatum rufipes, Hyalomma truncatum, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Rhipicephalus gertrudae and Rhipicephalus simus. With the exception of the larvae of R. appendiculatus, the incidents of these ticks feeding on humans correlated well with their seasonal occurrences on preferred hosts. Ticks were also collected at monthly intervals, for 14 consecutive months, from the clothing of a game-guard providing protection for field-workers engaged in the collection, by means of flannel strips, of free-living ticks from the vegetation of four localities in the southern region of the Kruger National Park. In addition, with the exception of 3 months when the particular worker was absent, ticks that fed on one of the field-workers were collected over the same 14-month period. A total of 54,429 free-living ticks belonging to 14 species and six genera were collected from the vegetation at the four localities during this time and 3751 ticks belonging to 11 species and six genera from the clothing of the game-guard. The larvae of A. hebraeum and Boophilus decoloratus were the most numerous of the immature ticks, and H. leachi and R. simus of the adults on both the vegetation and the guard’s clothing. Ticks fed on the field-worker on six occasions and 14 were collected, all of which were A. hebraeum larvae. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The hakea bud weevil, Dicomada rufa (Curculionidae), is a promising candidate for the biological control of the weed Hakea sericea (Proteaceae) in South Africa. Because D. rufa could not be successfully cultured on potted plants in quarantine, most of theconventional methods for host range determination were not suitable. A type of open-field testing method, the fixed plot survey method, was developed to show that D. rufa is host specific to H. sericea. The trial was conducted in three 1–2 ha plots at three localities in New SouthWales, Australia, involving 41 test plantspecies. This result was combined with otherconventional considerations to apply for therelease of D. rufa in South Africa. Theseincluded a multiple choice feeding trial inquarantine in South Africa, during which 10test species from seven genera of South AfricanProteaceae were not accepted for feeding. AllSouth African Proteaceae, except Brabejumstellatifolium, are phylogenetically distinctfrom H. sericea. Also, there are norecords of D. rufa interacting withcommercially important plants in Australia, including commercially cultivated South AfricanProteaceae. Dicomada rufa adult andlarval feeding destroys buds, flowers, smallfruits and succulent shoots. It is expectedthat this damage will supplement that of thetwo seed-feeding biological control agentsalready established in South Africa and furtherreduce the reproductive potential of the weed, particularly that of young plants regeneratingafter fires. Without compromising safety, thefixed plot survey method may also contribute toreducing the time and cost normally associatedwith conventional host specificity testing.  相似文献

The effect of rainfall pattern on tick challenge was investigated at Kyle Recreational Park, Zimbabwe, from 1991 to 1992 using drag and removal plot methods to sample environmental tick density. The abundance of adults and nymphs of the brown ear-tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and larvae of the bont tick Amblyomma hebraeum was positively correlated with monthly rainfall, whereas no relationship with rainfall was revealed for larval R. appendiculatus, adults of the red-legged tick R. evertsi, or larvae of the blue tick Boophilus decoloratus. A comparison between 1991 (490 mm rainfall) and the drought year of 1992 (161 mm) revealed significant differences in the abundance of R. appendiculatus, A. hebraeum, and B. decoloratus. During the wet season, R. appendiculatus adults were 2–3 time more numerous in the environment during the higher rainfall year of 1991. A. hebraeum larval abundance exhibited a similar pattern to that of R. appendiculatus adults, but B. decoloratus larvae were more abundant in the drought year of 1992 during both the wet and dry seasons. Comparable tick abundance data collected at Kyle during the above-average rainfall years of 1975–1977 (mean = 1029 mm) were compared with tick challenge during the below-average rainfall years of 1991–1992 (mean = 326 mm). In grassland sand habitat and all habitats combined R. appendiculatus adults, nymphs, and larvae were much more abundant during the high rainfall years. In contrast, larvae of B. decoloratus were more numerous during the drier years. A. hebraeum larvae were also more abundant during the drier years. The strong positive correlation of adult R. appendiculatus abundance with rainfall and the coincidence of increased adult tick challenge with increased rainfall indicates that adult R. appendiculatus tick burden on hosts would be heaviest during the wet season and high rainfall years.  相似文献

ITS1 sequence data was obtained for fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis) andS. lautus from Australia,S. madagascariensis andS. inaequidens from South Africa andS. madagascariensis from Madagascar. Despite the low level of variation (0.0–3.4%), these data further resolve the controversy concerning the identity and origin of fireweed. They confirm that fireweed is part of the South AfricanS. madagascariensis/S. inaequidens complex, and indicate that the infestation in Australia originated from South Africa as opposed to Madagascar. This will facilitate a resumption of biological control efforts in Australia and will direct surveys for control agents to South Africa.  相似文献

Rickettsia africae is a gram-negative bacterium, which causes African tick bite fever (ATBF) in humans. ATBF is a febrile disease mainly affecting travellers to southern Africa. This bacterium is known to be transmitted by Amblyomma hebraeum and Amblyomma variegatum ticks. In southern Africa, the principal vector is A. hebraeum. Febrile disease is a serious issue in the study area. There is a high prevalence of non-malaria illness caused by Rickettsia, so there is a need to have more knowledge on these species. Infection rates and transovarial transmission efficiency of R. africae in A. hebraeum ticks were investigated in a rural area of Mpumalanga province, South Africa. Adult and engorged A. hebraeum female ticks were collected from cattle. Larvae were collected by dragging a cloth at ground level using 100 steps, equivalent to an area of 100 m2. Tick identification was performed according to standard taxonomic keys using a microscope. Engorged ticks were incubated to oviposit and egg masses were collected. DNA was extracted from the ticks, larvae and egg masses, and screened for gltA and ompA genes, using quantitative real-time PCR and conventional PCR, respectively. Positive ompA amplicons were sequenced and phylogenetic analysis showed 99.8-100% identity with R. africae. Infection rates were 13.7 and 12.7% for adults and larvae, respectively. Transovarial transmission of R. africae in A. hebraeum from this study was 85.7%. The results provide a clear indication that people living in the study area and travellers that visit the area are at risk of contracting ATBF.

Infestations of adults and nymphs of Amblyomma hebraeum were counted on Brahman (Br), Brahman x Simmental (BS), Sanga (Sa) and Hereford (He) steers exposed to infested pastures at Mbizi in southern Zimbabwe in 1986–1987. Herefords were always the most heavily infested, while the Sanga tended to carry the fewest ticks with the Brahman and Brahman x Simmental groups being in between. The ratios of the engorged females on the four breeds were 2.3 : 1.4 : 1.4 : 1.0 for He : Br : BS : Sa. The ratios of the standard nymphs were 2.2 : 1.4 : 1.7 : 1.0 for He : Br : BS : Sa. The results confirm earlier observations in Africa and support the view that there are genetic differences between breeds in the expression of resistance to this tick species.Deceased.  相似文献

Largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides are a popular North American angling species that was introduced into South Africa in 1928. To enhance the largemouth bass fisheries, Florida bass Micropterus floridanus were introduced into KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, in 1980. Knowledge on the status of M. floridanus in South Africa is required, because it lives longer and reaches larger sizes than M. salmoides, which may result in heightened impacts on native biota. Because M. floridanus are morphologically similar, but genetically distinct from M. salmoides, the distribution of this species was assessed by genetically screening 185 Micropterus sp. individuals sampled from 20 localities across South Africa using the mitochondrial ND2 gene. Individuals with mitochondrial DNA matching M. salmoides were recovered from 16 localities, whereas M. floridanus mitochondrial DNA was recovered from 13 localities. At nine localities (45%), the mitochondrial DNA of both species was detected. These results demonstrate M. floridanus dispersal to multiple sites across South Africa.  相似文献

Utricularia forms the largest genus of carnivorous plants and is characterized by the possession of typical traps (“bladders”). Total biomass allocation was examined in three aquatic, six terrestrial and one epiphytic species of Utricularia from natural habitats in West Africa and from the Botanical Gardens, Bonn. Total biomass of aquatic species was considerably higher than that of terrestrial or epiphytic species. Epiphytic Utricularia accumulate about 35% of their biomass in green leaves, in contrast to 65% of nearly chlorophylless reproductive structures and traps. Aquatic species allocated more than 85% of their total biomass to stolons, leaves and traps, but only 10–13% to reproductive structures. This is in stark contrast to the allocation patterns of terrestrial bladderworts. These species allocate nearly 90% of their total biomass in reproductive structures, and only about 10% to stolons, leaves and traps. This reduction of photosynthetically active plant tissue strongly suggests that as a consequence of the alternative resource of chemical energy, the carnivorous habit might have partly replaced autotrophy in certain terrestrial Utricularia species, especially in some smaller ones.  相似文献

During 1988 and 1989 409 specimens, representing 50 species in 9 families of southern African Anura from 26 localities throughout the Republic of South Africa and from Swaziland, were examined for gallbladder myxozoans. Myxidium lesminteri n. sp. was the only myxozoan found and was observed in one tomopterna krugerensis (Ranidae), one Bufo garmani (Bufonidae) and one Heleophryne natalensis (Heleophrynidae), all from Transvaal. The spore of Myxidium lesminteri (9.5–15.0 × 5.0–8.0 m) is characterised by a smooth shell devoid of striations but has one longitudinal ridge.  相似文献

The chromosome numbers of the 24 species of sect.Pelargonium were determined from field collected and cultivated plants of known localities in S. Africa. Twelve species are diploid (2n = 22), eight tetraploid (2n = 44), one hexaploid (2n = 66), and three octoploid (2n = 88). The chromosome numbers correlate well with the proposed subdivision of sect.Pelargonium. Its chromosomes are relatively small (1.0–1.5 µm) in comparison to most of the other sections, and its diploid karyotype is considered to be primitive. The occurrence of the basic number x = 11 in this section, in other sections of the genus, and in related genera (Monsonia, Sarcocaulon) leads to the conclusion that x = 11 probably is basic for the whole genus. — The pollen meiosis, microsporogenesis and pollen fertility of the diploid species is normal, with the exception of one, possibly young taxon from the Greyton Nature Reserve. The tetraploid species could be of autoploid origin, the higher polyploids exhibit a mixed auto-alloploid nature. — The 20 diploid and tetraploid species have a relatively small distribution range, most of them occur in the SW. Cape Province of South Africa. This area may therefore be considered as the centre of origin of the genus. Three of the four high polyploid species occupy rather large areas.

We studied spatial niche metrics of large-bodied newts (Triturus cristatus and T. marmoratus) in three breeding ponds in western France. Adults and larvae were sampled with underwater funnel traps. Larvae were identified to the species with diagnostic microsatellite DNA markers. The distribution of adult T. cristatus and T. marmoratus across pond regions differed in one out of six cases, no differences were observed between larvae (two ponds studied). Niche overlap and niche breadth indices across resource states defined as pond regions or individual traps were high (Schoener's C: pond regions 0.60–0.98, traps 0.35–0.71; Levins' B: pond regions 0.71–0.98, traps 0.35–0.76). Adults of large-bodied newts significantly differed in resource use from small-bodied newts (T. helveticus). The results are discussed in view of the occurrence of interspecific breeding attempts, and the unpredictable ecological characteristics of newt breeding ponds.  相似文献

Crawford, R. J. M., Cooper, J. &; Shelton, P. A. 1982. Distribution, population size, breeding and conservation of the Kelp Gull in southern Africa. Ostrich 53:164:177.

The Kelp Gull Lams dominicanus in Africa occurs coastally between Luanda, Angola and Delagoa Bay, Moçmbique. It breeds between Cape Cross Lagoon, South West Africa/Namibia and Riet River, eastern Cape, South Africa. Censuses of nests and breeding birds at all known southern African breeding localities in the period 1976–1981 indicated that 11 199 pairs bred at 52 localities; 79.5% of this population occurred in South Africa, 57,1% in the Saldanha Bay to Dassen Island region, southwestern Cape. Of the breeding pairs 83% occurred on offshore islands and rocks. Colony size at islands is related to their surface area andMayalso be influenced by food availability and the level of human disturbance. The species breeds in a wide variety of habitats ranging from cliffs and rock stacks to wooden platforms, lowlying vegetation among sand dunes and estuarine sandbars. Any available material is used in the construction of nests, whichMaybe as dense as 4/m2 Clutch size is 2–3 eggs. In 1978 breeding took place earlier in South Africa than in South West Africa/Namibia. 92% of the population breeds m sites which are legally protected. Kelp Gulls have decreased or increased in numbers at some breeding localities but there is no clear overall trend. Any increases in colony size near urban areasMayresult in added airstrike hazards.  相似文献

A shipment of South African corn (1989) exported to Taiwan, was analyzed for various ear-rot fungi andFusarium mycotoxins. Two sets of samples, one from the points of origin in South Africa prior to shipment, and the other from the end-point distributors in Taiwan, were studied. Surface-sterilized kernels were plated onto two different agar media and the fungal colonies identified. High Performance Liquid Chromatography was used to analyze mycotoxin levels. The predominant ear-rot fungi, in decreasing order of isolation frequency, wereFusarium subglutinans, F. moniliforme, Diplodia maydis andF. graminearum. Aspergillus flavus andA. parasiticus were not isolated from samples prior to export, but a small number ofA. flavus isolates were found after shipment. The predominant mycotoxins were fumonisins B1 (0–865 ng/g) and B2 (0–250 ng/g). Low levels of moniliformin (390 ng/g) were detected in some samples before shipment. Zearalenone (25 ng/g), and nivalenol (120 ng/g) were detected in two out of 32 samples taken in Taiwan. The samples contained no detectable levels of either aflatoxins (>0.5 ng/g) or deoxynivalenol (>100 ng/g) before or after shipment.Abbreviations RSA South Africa(n) - FB1 fumonisin B1 - FB2 fumonisin B2 - ETVL eastern Transvaal - WTVL western Transvaal  相似文献

Tapesia yallundae var.yallundae is newly recorded from wheat stubble collected near Moorresburg in the western Cape Province of South Africa. Apothecia were observed on wheat stubble incubated for 8 months at 10°C under near-ultraviolet light. Single ascospore isolates produced colonies typical of the Wheat (W)-type in culture. Apothecia were also induced after single-conidial isolates were mated on wheat stubble and incubated at 10–15°C for 6 months. All single-conidial isolates were of the W-pathotype (Ramulispora herpotrichoides var.herpotrichoides).  相似文献

Conventionally, Lepus capensis is considered to range across large parts of Africa, the Middle East, Central and Far East Asia. However, a recent morphological study restricts cape hares tentatively to a small range in the Western Cape Region of South Africa and groups all other L. capensis-type hares from South Africa into a new species: L. centralis. Here, we studied molecular relationships among L. capensis-type hares from South Africa. Phenotypically and morphologically the individuals matched either the newly described L. capensis or L. centralis. We examined 66 hares for allelic variation at 13 microsatellite loci and for sequence variation of the hypervariable domain 1 of the mitochondrial control region. All tree-generating analyses of the currently obtained sequences and all South African cape hare sequences downloaded from GenBank revealed monophyly when compared to sequences of various other Lepus species. A network analysis indicated close evolutionary relationships between hares of the “L. capensis-phenotype” and the “L. centralis-phenotype” (according to Palacios et al. 2008) from the southwest of the Western Cape, relative to their pronounced evolutionary divergence from all other more central, northern, and north-eastern L. capensis-type hares. F-statistics, a Bayesian admixture STRUCTURE model, as well as a principal coordinate analysis of microsatellite data indicated close genetic relationships among all South African L. capensis-type hares studied presently. A coalescence model-based migration analysis for microsatellite alleles indicated gene flow between most of the considered subspecies of cape hare, including L. capensis capensis and L. capensis centralis, theoretically sufficient to balance stochastic drift effects. Concordantly, AMOVA models revealed only little effects of partitioning microsatellite variation into the two suggested morpho-species “L. capensis” and “L. centralis”. Under an “Interbreeding Species Concept” (e.g. a strict or relaxed Biological Species Concept), the current molecular data demonstrate conspecificity of the two proposed morpho-species “L. capensis” and “L. centralis”. Based on the present molecular data the differentiation of subspecies of cape hares from southern Africa is discussed.  相似文献

The red alga Stictosiphonia hookeri is epilithic in shaded habitats of the upper intertidal zone from 30 to 55° S. Thalli of this species from Argentina, Chile, South Africa and Australia, usually without reproductive structures when collected, all developed tetrasporangia in culture. Although good vegetative growth occurred in all nine isolates at 20–25 °C, 12:12 light: dark cycle, 10–30 µmol photons m–2 s–1, none reproduced in these conditions except one isolate from Australia. At 15 °C the four South African (34 °S) isolates developed tetrasporangial stichidia, and three completed a Polysiphonia-type life history. Gametophytes were unisexual or bisexual. At 15 °C one isolate from Chile (36 °S) formed tetrasporangia, but sporelings were not viable. At 10 °C isolates from Argentina and Chile (53 °S and 54 °S) formed tetrasporangia; however, only the Chile isolate completed a Polysiphonia-type life history with unisexual gametophytes. The temperature required to induce sporogenesis correlates with the range of water and air temperatures in the natural habitats of each isolate. In irradiances >50 µmol m–2 s–1 the thalli became yellow- brown within two weeks because of phycobiliprotein loss, but this did not impair growth or reproduction. The Argentina and Chile isolates were resistant to freezing in seawater for at least two days, showing no cell damage. The protein cuticle of the outer cell wall is repeatedly shed in culture. This may serve to minimize the attachment of epiphytes in the field.  相似文献

Gelidium pristoides in South Africa   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Gelidium pristoides has been harvested commercially from the eastern Cape, South Africa, since 1951, with 40–80 t y–1 (dry wt) collected in recent years. This species has been intensively studied since 1983, and we briefly review knowledge of its biology in relation to harvesting. We describe a new study of intertidal epiphytic animals, showing that none is specific to G. pristoides, and that only 2.8% of these animals (numbers) inhabit this agarophyte, while the rest are found in other intertidal algal communities: harvesting is considered to have negligible effects on epifauna. Over the past 3 y, we have monitored, at two sites, the effects of the harvesting of G. pristoides on other benthic algae and animals. In only two of the seven main components analysed, did we find any difference between harvested and control plots. At one site only, the number of limpets and percentage cover of Gelidium was higher in harvested plots. These results show that harvesting has no significant biological effect. Regulations governing seaweed exploitation in South Africa were amended in 1988, to encourage local processing of products, and these changes are discussed in relation to the local Gelidium industry. Despite experimental results predicting a higher yield per unit effort if harvesting is limited to summer, harvesting continues throughout the year for practical reasons.  相似文献

Rope rafts were used to evaluate the growth of localGracilaria gracilis at Saldanha Bay, on the west coast of South Africa, over four years. The plants were grown on horizontally-suspended ropes or netting lines. Relative Growth Rates (RGR) of plants on ropes with low stocking weights often exceeded 10% d–1 in (austral) summer, and fell to between 6 and 7.5% d–1 in winter. Commercial-style lines of plastic netting stocked at 400 g m–1 and placed 0.75 m apart yielded a mean of about 2 kg m–2 30 d–1, with a mean RGR of about 5% d–1 over a two-year period. Various methods of improving yields were tested, including attaching floats to individual lines and optimising stocking weight. In Saldanha Bay in late summer, warm, oligotrophic water can severely reduce growth. Growth was optimised by growing the plants as close as possible to the surface (0.2 m), where water motion, and by implication, nutrient uptake, are higher. Agar content and gel strength generally remained high all year round. The potential for commercial production is evaluated in the light of these results.  相似文献

Fossil teeth and bones of aardvarks are relatively common at Langebaanweg, an Early Pliocene site in western Cape Province, South Africa. The remains are compatible in size and most details of morphology to extant Orycteropus afer, and are the earliest fossils attributed to this species. Other Late Miocene to Early Pliocene localities in Africa have yielded smaller species of aardvarks, suggesting that the extant lineage evolved in southern Africa. Morphologically the genus Orycteropus has been remarkably conservative since at least the Early Miocene but it witnessed an overall increase in size through the Neogene. The species O. afer has been morphometrically stable since the Early Pliocene. These observations indicate that the evolutionary process in aardvarks is extremely bradytelic. Pudu puda is a very small deer that inhabits humid areas of the temperate forests in Chile and Argentina and is one of the less known South American deer. We provide an updated distribution of Pudu puda in Argentina, with georeferenced sighting localities, and some qualitative features of its habitat such as forest type and understory. We also analyse the effects of human settlements, cattle and invasive mammals (Cervus elaphus and Sus scrofa) on the distribution of the southern pudu. We obtained information on Pudu puda occurrence from unpublished sources including protected areas provided by National Parks Administration and interviews of local residents. In the north sector of Nahuel Huapi National Park, where high density of records was found, we obtained information about some qualitative habitat features, proximity of Pudu puda sighting localities to human settlements, presence of invasive mammals and cattle. We recorded a total of 54 new localities for Pudu puda in Argentina, the northernmost record at S 39°23′, W 71°17′ and the southernmost at S 42°58′, W 72°00′. We recorded low frequency of human settlements, Sus scrofa and Cervus elaphus in Pudu puda sighting localities. We did not detect exclusion of Pudu puda from areas with cattle occurrence. Sighting localities of southern pudu were made mostly in monotypic mature Nothofagus dombeyi forest, with dense understory dominated by Chusquea coleu.  相似文献
