We designed and standardized a culture method for freshwater anostracans using diets free of live algae.Thamnocephalus platyurus andBranchinecta lindahli were used as test organisms. We used baker's yeast as basic food and added inert particles (clay or amorphic silicium dioxide) to improve the digestion of the yeast. A flow-through culture system was used, according to a fixed feeding schedule, to supply separately, culture medium (tap water), food, and inert particle suspensions. Three variants with baker's yeast as basic, food were compared for survival, growth, and reproduction. A diet of solely baker's yeast (diet 1) or baker's yeast supplemented with vegetal oil containing ß-carotene (diet 2) was unsuitable for reproduction ofT. platyurus. Cyst production was only achieved when diet 2 was supplemented with fish oil andSpirulina powder (diet 3). This suggests that not only a digestibility problem, but also nutritional deficiencies are present in baker's yeast.  相似文献

The hypersaline environments and salterns present in the western Mediterranean region (including Italy, southern France, the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco) contain autochthonous forms of the brine shrimp Artemia, with parthenogenetic diploid and tetraploid strains coexisting with the bisexual species A. salina. Introduced populations of the American brine shrimp A. franciscana have also been recorded in these Mediterranean environments since the 1980s. Based on brine shrimp cyst samples collected in these countries from 1980 until 2002, we were able to establish the present distribution of autochthonous brine shrimps and of A. franciscana, which is shown to be an expanding invasive species. The results obtained show that A. franciscana is now the dominant Artemia species in Portuguese salterns, along the French Mediterranean coast and in Cadiz bay (Spain). Co-occurrence of autochthonous (parthenogenetic) and American brine shrimp populations was observed in Morocco (Mar Chica) and France (Aigues Mortes), whereas A. franciscana was not found in Italian cyst samples. The results suggest these exotic A. franciscana populations originate as intentional or non-intentional inoculations through aquacultural (hatchery effluents) or pet market activities, and suggest that the native species can be rapidly replaced by the exotic species. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary Free-living nematodes may be attacked and eaten by soil mites which are normally considered fungivores or saprophages. Three species in the genus Tyrophagus, common inhabitants of grassland soils and also common pests in stored products, museums and laboratories, are predators of nematodes. All active stages of the mites will voraciously consume nematodes. When offered nematodes and a choice of other food (baker's yeast and algae), 11% of the Tyrophagus putrescentiae, 23% of the T. zachvatkini, and 56% of the T. similis tested fed on nematodes. Tyrophagus zechvatkini and similis were reared on a diet consisting entirely of nematodes, and developed at rates similar to a fungal diet and produced viable offspring. Agar cultures of Aphelenchus avenae which were inoculated with five mating pairs of Tyrophagus zachvatkini had populations that were one-third less than mite-free controls. Observations indicate that nematodes may be attacked by tyrophagid mites when in a dry, anhydrobiotic state.  相似文献

Due to increasing eutrophication of the coastal Baltic waters, drifting algae are a common phenomenon. Drifting algal mats accumulate on shallow sandy bottoms in late summer and autumn, and affect the ambient fauna. Juvenile flounder, Platichthys flesus, utilize these habitats during their first few years. They feed on benthic meio- and macrofauna; part of their diet consists of shelled species, such as Ostracods, and juvenile Hydrobia spp. and Macoma balthica. Earlier studies have shown that up to 75% of ostracods and 92% of hydrobiids survive the gut passage of juvenile flounder, while all M. balthica are digested by the fish. We conducted laboratory experiments to study how the shelled prey responded to a drift algal mat, and the predation efficiency of juvenile P. flesus on these prey species on bare sand and with drifting algae (50% coverage). Hydrobia spp. utilized the drift algae as a habitat and, after 1 h, 50% had moved into the algae; ostracods and M. balthica were more stationary and, after 96 h, only 23 and 12%, respectively, were found in the algae. For the predation efficiency of P. flesus, a two-way ANOVA with habitat (algae, bare sand) and predation (fish, no fish) as factors revealed that both algae and predation affected negatively the survival of all three prey species. The algae, thus, affected the predation efficiency of juvenile P. flesus and the consumption of prey was much reduced in the algal treatments compared to the bare sand. This was due probably to increased habitat complexity and the ability of prey, especially hydrobiids, to use the algal mat as a refuge. Altered habitat structure due to drift algae, together with the resultant changes in habitat (refuge) value for different prey species, may profoundly change the structure of benthic communities.  相似文献

Three species of microalgae, the freshwater Euglena gracilis and themarine Dunaliella salina and Tetraselmis suecica, were fed tothe brine shrimp Artemia salina in order to compare their suitabilityin terms of fatty acid enrichment, and their effect on the biometric parametersof the zooplankter. The fatty acid content and composition were analyzed for the post-larval and pre-adult stages of Artemia fed the algae and theresults compared to the initial content of unfed 24-hour post-hatch nauplii.Differences in the total fatty acid content occurred between the three stages, the fatty acid profile being determined by the composition of the diet. A decreasing trend for almost all the individual fatty acids occurred throughdevelopment from post-larva to pre-adult with each of the three algal diets.Biometrical differences between Artemia fed the marine algae and that fed Euglena were not consistent in the post-larval stage, but became considerable in the pre-adult stage. Artemia fed with Euglena achieved twice the weight of animals fed the marine algae and showed thehighest length. The implications for the use of on-grown Artemia as afeed in larviculture of marine and freshwater fish and crustaceans are considered.  相似文献

Somatic growth in S. proboscideus, fed Chlorella vulgaris increased with temperature reaching a plateau after about 8 to 11 days at between 26 and 31 °C. Survival was best below 29 °C. Fertility (the number of cysts produced per female) and survival, tested at 27 °C, demonstrated some variability as a function of the composition of four different diets. However, large variances and few replicates make exact evaluation impossible. It was found that S. proboscideus can successfully be cultured, using a variety of food sources. Only pure Spirulina platensis gave unsatisfactory results in terms of low cyst production and high mortality. Filamentous blue-green algae, because of their possible toxicity, should preferably be excluded from formulated diets.  相似文献

The identification of the environmental conditions inducing different ecophysiological responses in the different strains and populations of the brine shrimp Artemia should improve the understanding of their biogeographic distribution. Nauplii from two Argentinean brine shrimp populations, Artemia persimilis from Salinas Grandes de Hidalgo (province of La Pampa) and Artemia franciscana from Laguna Mar Chiquita (province of Cordoba), were grown up until adulthood at different salinities (30, 60, 90, 120 gL−1) and temperatures (12, 21, 28°C). The aim was to assess the effects of these different conditions on prereproductive life span and reproductive traits. Results evidenced that at 21 and 28°C, at any salinity, A. franciscana from Laguna Mar Chiquita attained higher survival and fecundity, after a shorter prereproductive period, than A. persimilis from Salinas Grandes de Hidalgo. These data support that A. franciscana, considered a superspecies, exhibits higher phenotypic plasticity than A. persimilis, and that A. persimilis is better adapted to lower temperatures than A. franciscana. These differences in temperature and salinity tolerance could explain the present distribution of these two species in the South Cone in South America. Handling Editor: J. Melack  相似文献

The brine shrimp Artemia is a well known animal extremophile adapted to survive in very harsh hypersaline environments. We compared the small stress proteins artemin and p26, and the chaperone hsc70 in encysted embryos (cysts) of the New World species, A. franciscana and A. persimilis. Cysts of the former, from San Francisco Bay, USA (SFB), were used essentially as a reference for these proteins, while both species were from locations in Chile where they occur in habitats at latitudinal extremes, the Atacama desert and Patagonia. These two species are phylogenetically distant, A. persimilis being closer to the Old World species, whilst A. franciscana is considered younger and undergoing evolutionary expansion. Using western blotting we found all three stress proteins in cysts from these five populations in substantial although variable amounts. The protein profiles revealed by Coomassie staining after electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) were similar qualitatively, in spite of marked differences in the habitats from which these populations originated, and the long time since they diverged. We interpret these findings as further evidence for the adaptive importance of these three conserved proteins in coping with the variable, but severe stresses these encysted embryos endure.  相似文献

In Lake G»rdsjön (Southwest Sweden), liming as an experimental improvement of living conditions for pelagic algae, resulted in a significant increase of algal biomass and a reduction of mean cell size. The algal development was beneficial for small sized filter feeding zooplankton, particularly rotifers, which showed a significant increase. The increase in abundance of small sized zooplankton created better food conditions for the smaller instars, and thus a much better overall survival of Chaoborus larvae. The resulting, 6–7 times larger population of Chaoborus larvae significantly changed the structure of the crustacean zooplankton community. Bosmina coregoni, the fastest swimmer of the crustacean species suffered most and was strongly reduced by the increased predation from Chaoborus. The share of cladocerans decreased, while copepods increased in importance.  相似文献

The effects of five diets (larvae of Galleria mellonella L., larvae of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval), eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, cysts of Artemia franciscana Kellogg and an artificial diet based on bovine meat) on development, survival and reproduction of two predatory stinkbugs, Picromerus bidens L. and Podisus maculiventris (Say), were studied in the laboratory. Both species successfully completed immature development on the foods offered, except for P. bidens on cysts of A. franciscana. Significant effects of diet on developmental duration were found in both species. Total developmental time from second instar to adult ranged from 25.0 to 41.5 days and from 18.7 to 46.0 days in P. bidens and P. maculiventris, respectively. Nymphal survival of P. maculiventris was superior to that of P. bidens on all diets tested. Nymphal survival of P. maculiventris was greater than 92% on all diets except on A. franciscana cysts, yielding only 50% survival to adulthood. Survival of P. bidens fed on eggs of E. kuehniella was higher than that of conspecifics fed on caterpillar prey or artificial diet (89% on flour moth eggs vs. 68 and 80% on G. mellonella and S. littoralis and only 50% on meat diet). Fresh weight of newly emerged females of both pentatomids was affected by the diet offered to the predators during their nymphal stage. Females of P. maculiventris produced viable eggs on all diets except on cysts of A. franciscana and had mean fecundities of 691, 436, 608 and 344 eggs per female on S. littoralis, G. mellonella, E. kuehniella eggs and the meat diet, respectively. Females of P. bidens laid eggs only on live prey with mean fecundities of 94 and 38 eggs per female on S. littoralis and G. mellonella, respectively. The results indicate a lower nutritional plasticity of P. bidens as compared with P. maculiventris. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Environmental variation in food resources modifies performance of herbivores, in addition to genetic variation and maternal effects. In marine benthic habitats, eutrophication may modify herbivores diets by changing host species composition or nutritional quality of algae for herbivores. We studied experimentally the effects of diet breadth and nutrient availability for the host algae on fitness components of the herbivorous isopod Idotea baltica. We fed the adult isopods with the brown algae Fucus vesiculosus and Pilayella littoralis and juveniles with the green alga Cladophora glomerata. By using half-sib families, we were able to separate the genetic, environmental and maternal effects on intermolt duration and size of the juveniles. The mothers confined to the diet consisting of both Fucus and Pilayella grew better and produced larger egg mass than those having consumed Fucus alone. Nutrient enhancement of algae did not influence the performance of the adult herbivores. However, the juveniles achieved twice the weight as well as shorter intermolt duration when consuming nutrient-treated C. glomerata. Mothers nutrition, either nutrient enrichment of her food algae or diet breadth, did not affect juvenile survival or growth as such, but we found evidence that the broader diet consumed by the mother mediated offspring performance by further accelerating growth rate of the offspring that fed on nutrient-treated alga. Intermolt duration was a highly heritable trait, but size showed very low heritability. Instead, maternal effects on size were substantial, suggesting that differences among mothers in their egg-provisioning ability strongly affect weight gain of their offspring. A high amount of additive genetic variance in intermolt duration implies potential for quick evolutionary responses in the growth schedule in the face of changes in the selective environment. We conclude that eutrophication, in addition to improving growth and reproduction of I. baltica by enhancing food quality and by providing opportunity for broader, more profitable diets, may act as a selective agent on life-history traits. Eutrophication of coastal waters is thus likely to reflect in herbivore density, population dynamics and eventually, grazing pressure of littoral macroalgae.  相似文献

We cultured Streptocephalus proboscideus using rice bran as a food source, and compared its growth, mortality, fertility, and cyst hatching with published data on animals fed other food sources. We also analysed the fatty acid profile of animals and cysts. The performance of rice-bran fed shrimp was indistinguishable from that of shrimp fed most other formulated diets, but there are indications that some previously applied diets were either defective in essential fatty acids, or toxic.  相似文献

Rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis), maintained on baker's yeast, were fed for 24h upon two algal diets, Isochrysis galbana (diet A) and Isochrysis galbana + Nannochloropsis gaditana (diet B). (These algal diets were selected for their potential use as essential fatty acid (EFA) boosters, taking into account the requirements of fish larvae). The effect of these algal diets on total lipid content, lipid classes and fatty acid composition was studied. The total lipid content increased after feeding upon both diets but no significant differences were found between the two types. Neutral lipid and polar lipid contents increased and a positive correlation was observed between the neutral lipids content of rotifers and that of the food supplied. However, the content of polar lipids in rotifers did not depend upon that of the diet. The increase in neutral lipid content was found to be higher in rotifers fed upon diet B, compared to diet A which increased the phospholipid content. Non-enriched rotifers contained only small amounts of polyenoic fatty acids, i.e. 18:3n-6, 18:3n-3, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3, the contents of which increased significantly by feeding both diets. The EFA composition (20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3) of neutral lipids and phopholipids in rotifers reflected the EFA composition of each diet. Diet B-fed rotifers had the highest content in 20:4n-6 and 20:5n-3, whereas rotifers fed diet A and the highest 22:6n-3 content. The mixed diet I. galbana + N. gaditana enhanced substantially the composition of lipid classes i.e. neutral lipids and of n-3 PUFA of rotifers in comparison with Isochrysis or yeast diets.  相似文献

The availability and importance of food sources for growth of Daphnia longispina L. from a highly coloured fishless lake with anoxic hypolimnion were assessed by combining in situ and laboratory experiments. In in situ experiments populations were enclosed in tubes with natural temperature stratification and with or without anoxic hypolimnion. In the laboratory experiments the importance of food source (littoral zone vs pelagic epilimnion) was assessed by enclosing moss thalli and a natural zooplankton population in a large-scale flow-through system supplying food for experimental Daphnia. Growth of juveniles of Daphnia in epilimnetic water was determined in batch culture experiments and the importance of increasing concentrations of bacteria and algae for their growth and development was investigated with a small-scale flow-through system. Access to the anoxic hypolimnion enhanced the growth of Daphnia by 23–24%. Growth rates in the tubes with anoxic hypolimnion were 0.36 and 0.16 d–1 in July and August respectively. In tubes without anoxia the corresponding values were 0.29 and 0.13. In batch-cultures the highest growth rate determined was 0.16 and the overall rates were lower than in in situ experiments. In batch culture Daphnia was able to grow in darkness for 10 days with a rate of 0.16. In the large-scale flow-through system Daphnia population fed with littoral water reproduced well despite the low concentration of algae and increased its number by a factor of c. 32 in 10 days. However, the animals were small and net production of Daphnia population thus lower under the littoral influence than in the control treatment. Population could survive and grew slowly on pelagial water processed by a natural zooplankton community and with very little algae left. It is thus possible that bacteria serve as a life-support system enabling the population survival over periods of algal shortage. Small-scale flow-through experiments revealed that Daphnia longispina is able to mature and reproduce on a bacterial diet if the food concentration is high enough and Daphnia on bacterial food could achieve growth rates similar to those on an algal diet. The threshold food level for Daphnia longispina was estimated to be c. 18.5 g C 1–1. Detrital material is of limited value in nutrition of Daphnia even in a lake where more than 75% of carbon is bound in particulate detritus.  相似文献

Broiler chicks were orally dosed with a hot-water extract of mycelia from Cordyceps sinensis (CS-HW) to assess possible substitution of Avilamycin as an antibiotic growth promoter (AGP). The growth performance (body weight gain and survivability) and the health index (the microflora in the small intestines and the antibody titer to Newcastle disease virus) of chicks were significantly improved in the CS-HW (600 mg/kg diet) and the Avilamycin (20 mg/kg diet) fed group in comparison with the control group (p<0.05). The Avilamycin-fed group and the CS-HW-fed group had similar growth performances but the latter gave a better microbial flora in the small intestines. These results indicate that CS-HW enhances the physiological activity in chicks and can be used as a substitute for AGPs.  相似文献

Phytoplankton often develop various defense mechanisms in response to zooplankton grazing, such as spines and colonies. While it is now known that increased spine length and cells in a colony of members of the genus Scenedesmus, when zooplankton grazing is intense, helps in reducing zooplankton filtering rates, the effect of these defense mechanisms at the population level has been observed in few studies. Here we present data on the growth rates of four zooplankton species, Brachionus calyciflorus, B. patulus, Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia pulex at two food levels using two species of colony-forming Scenedesmus spp.: S. acutus (cell length = 18.2 ± 0.4 µm; width = 4.2 ± 0.1 µm; average colony length = 90 µm; width: 21 µm) and S. quadricauda (cell length: 21 ± 0.5 width 7.5 ± 0.3 µm; average colony length: 84 µm; width: 30 µm). Whereas S. acutus had no spines, S. quadricauda had spines of 6–10 µm. Population growth experiments of the test rotifers and cladocerans were conducted in 100 ml containers with 50 ml of the medium with test algae. Algae concentrations used were: 13 and 52 mg dw l–1 of each of the two algal species offered in colonial forms. We used an initial inoculation zooplankter density of 1 ind. ml–1 for either of the rotifer species and 0.2 ind. ml–1 for either of the cladoceran species. In all, we had 64 test containers (4 test species of zooplankton × 2 test species of algae × 2 algal densities × 4 replicates). We found a significant effect of algal size on the growth rates of all the four tested species of zooplankton. The population growth rates of zooplankton ranged from –0.58 to 0.66 and were significantly higher on diet of S. acutus than of S. quadricauda. Thus, our study confirms that the larger colony size and the formation of spines in S. quadricauda were effective defenses against grazing by both rotifers and smaller sized cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia but that larger-bodied Daphnia pulex could exploit both the algal populations equally.  相似文献

The search for environment-friendly and non-toxic antifouling (AF) paint components has led to the investigation of natural products from seaweeds. The defence metabolites used by algae to deter unwanted epibiosis have potential for harnessing and use in AF applications. Crude algal extracts may provide a suitable mixture of compounds with AF potency. Crude ethanol extracts of the macroalgae Chondrus crispus (Rhodophyceae), from both dried and fresh sources were tested and compared using bioassays based on five marine bacterial strains, five phytoplankton strains and two macroalgae to assess the AF efficacy. Dried extract from the algae had a lower minimum inhibitory concentration at 25 μg mL−1 against the growth of bacteria and phytoplankton species than that from the fresh source. Macroalgae tests indicated that the extracts had an anti-germination activity 25–50 μg mL−1 against both Undaria pinnatifida and Ulva intestinalis spores. A field trial of AF paint incorporating crude extract indicated an initial AF potency lasting six weeks.  相似文献

In contrast to the well-known blue-green algal containing lichens several green algal containing lichens, belonging to very different genera, show regular connections to free-living or ± lichenized blue-green algae, mainlyStigonema. Most of these lichens have squamulose thalli. This lichen-algal relationship, regarded as cyanotrophy, may be either facultative or obligate. Some of the species occur only on very poor, acidic rocks onStigonema, while they occur independent ofStigonema in high nutrient biotops. Obligate species cover the blue-green algae with hyphae and some of these species cover the algae so extensively that one can call these connections paracephalodia. — Two species and one variety are new to science from the mainly Himalayan genusBryonora. They occur in high elevations in Nepal and are cyanotrophic.Bryonora selenospora has thick, halfmoon-shaped to slightly twisted ascospores. The other two new taxa areB. reducta andB. rhypariza var.cyanotropha. There are several other cyanotrophic lichen taxa besides the ones described here. They will be introduced at a later occasion.

Summary The green parameciumParamecium bursaria has many endosymbiotic algae in its cytoplasm. Here, we cloned and characterized endosymbiotic algae fromP. bursaria and examined in detail the interaction between the cloned algae and algae-free paramecia. Homogenates ofP. bursaria were cultured on agar plates containing various kinds of media to establish clones of the endosymbiotic algae. Many algal colonies were obtained from poorly nutritious medium (CA medium) after one month in culture. Algae were picked up from these colonies and inoculations were repeated 9 times on agar plates containing CA medium. On enriched media including bacto-peptone, glucose, proteose-peptone and/or yeast extract, however, bacteria and mold grew rapidly and no algal colonies were formed. When the cloned algae were cultured in liquid CA medium, they grew faster than on agar plates and the numbers stayed constant at 1 × 107 algae/ml after 7 days in culture. They revealed high infectivity to algae-free paramecia, and an incubation period of 24 h and at least 1 × 103 algae/paramecium were required to achieve successful infection (80–90%). The growth and infection rate did not change through 74 repeated inoculations of algae in liquid CA medium. Optical microscopic observations revealed marked morphological similarity between endosymbiotic algae and free-livingChlorella, but the latter showed no infectivity to algae-free paramecia. The cloned endosymbiotic algae presented here will provide an excellent opportunity to examine the mechanism of symbiont-host interaction.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to assess the growth of Corbicula fluminea Müller (1774) fed mixed diets of the green alga Ankistrodesmus and five artificial foods (nine-grain cereal, rice flour, rye bran, denatured brewer's yeast and Ralston Purina trout chow). Clams lost weight after 30 days on each artificial diet; however, weight losses were significantly less than those of control clams which were not fed (p < 0.05). In contrast, clam growth was positive in each treatment which included Ankistrodesmus. There was no significant difference in the tissue growth of clams fed on an Ankistrodesmus monoculture and Ankistrodesmus supplemented with each artificial diet (p > 0.2). Therefore, we conclude that all of the artificial diets evaluated were of nutritional value. However, the alga Ankistrodesmus appears to be a superior food item. In subsequent experiments, clams were fed on diets consisting of various combinations of six genera of green algae (Pedinomonas, Ankistrodesmus, Chlamydomonas, Chlorella, Scenedesmus, and Selenastrum). All trialgal combinations of Chlamydomonas, Chlorella, Scenedesmus, and Ankistrodesmus and a dialgal culture of Chlamydomonas and Chlorella resulted in strong positive tissue growth. No other dialgal or monoalgal culture resulted in similar growth. Cultures of Selenastrum were found to be toxic, and their filtrate was determined to inhibit Corbicula filtration.  相似文献
