SUMMARY. 1. Newly-laid eggs of Coenagrion puella (L.) from a pond near Herzogenburg (Lower Austria) were kept at constant water temperatures (range c .3.5°C to c .28°C)in the laboratory. Hatching success varied with temperature; no eggs hatched below 12°C and nearly all hatched at c .l6°C. Hatching time decreased with increasing temperature and the relationship between the two variables within the range 12–28 °C was well described by a power law. The length of the hatching period was less than 12 days. Hatching times estimated from the power-law equations and those obtained in the field experiments were similar. Therefore both the hatching time and the length of the hatching period in the field could be estimated from the laboratory data for the range 12–28°C.
2. The maximum number of instars from egg to imago was 11; the average body length increment (mm) per moult was proportionately constant at c .26% and Dyar's rule was applicable. The interval between moults decreased with increasing temperature up to the seventh instar and the relationship between the two variables within the range 12–28°C was well described by a power law. The moulting interval for instars 8–11 ranged from 23 to 48 days and was relatively independent of temperature. No moulting occurred at temperatures below 12°C.
3. Larval growth was logistic in the laboratory and variations in mean logistic growth rate (range 0–2.5% length day−1) were related to mean temperature with no growth at temperatures <12°C. Larval growth rates in pond experiments were similar to those estimated from laboratory data, and therefore the regression equations obtained from the laboratory experiments are probably applicable to larval growth in the field.
4. Information on the life cycle of C. puella is briefly reviewed and it is concluded that C. puella from the pond near Herzogenburg has an univoltine life cycle.  相似文献

Ammonium assimilation in plants occurs via the glutamine synthetase (GS, EC 6.3.1.2)/glutamine 2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase (GOGAT, EC 1.4.1.13 + 1.4.1.14 + 1.4.7.1) pathway. Rates of in vivo ammonium assimilation were measured in the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum by a recently developed technique that uses the protonophore carbonyl cyanide m -chlorophenylhydrazone to release unassimilated ammonium from the cells. In nitrogen-replete cells of P. tricornutum , there was a poor relationship between uptake and in vivo assimilation of ammonium, with the rate of uptake decreasing and the rate of assimilation increasing with time in the presence of ammonium. Ammonium uptake and assimilation were markedly light dependent, with assimilation inhibited by 77% in darkness. Oligomycin (5 µg ml−1), an inhibitor of the mitochondrial ATPase, had no effect on the rate of photosynthesis, the maximum endogenous ammonium pool or GS activity in Phaeodactylum , but inhibited respiration by 24–27%. In the light, oligomycin inhibited ammonium assimilation by 55–70% and growth rate by 52%. One possible explanation for these results, namely that mitochondrial ATP is required to sustain activity of the cytosolic isoform of GS, is discussed.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Mature larvae of Ecdyonurus dispar were collected from Ennerdale Water and Windermere (English Lake District) and reared to adult males and females in the laboratory. The females were then fertilized artificially and their progeny were kept at constant temperatures (range 4.2–20.2°C). Larvae collected directly from the two lakes were also reared under the same conditions.
The maximum number of instars from egg to subimago was 25, the average body length increment (mm) per moult was proportionately constant at c . 15% and Dyar's rule was applicable. The interval between moults decreased with increasing temperature and the relationship between the two variables within the temperature range 4.2–19.8°C was described by a power law. Larval growth was exponential and variations in mean specific growth rate (range 0.23–5.23% length day−1) were related to mean temperature which was the major factor affecting growth in the laboratory. A few experiments were also performed in the lake to test the adequacy of the estimated values for larval growth at different temperatures in the laboratory. There was agreement between the estimates and the actual growth rates in the lake. Therefore, the regression equations obtained from the laboratory experiments are probably applicable to larval growth in the field.
Values for daily production in the laboratory ranged from 0.53 to 9.33 mg dry wt day−1 m−2. The lowest value was obtained at 8.9°C and the highest at 20°C.
Information on different life cycles of E. dispar is briefly reviewed and it is concluded that E. dispar from the lakes can only achieve one generation per year.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Consumption, production and assimilation rates were determined for two age groups of Crypropygus antarcticus to give an estimate of energy utilization, and to investigate low temperature adaptation in its energy partitioning.
2. Feeding selectivity shown in laboratory preference tests was supported by gut analysis of field animals from contrasting sites. Although moulting rate was not significantly affected by food type, rates of growth were slowest and mortality highest when fed on a non-preferred substrate.
3. Both a radio labelling and a more direct method for measuring dry weight consumed gave similar results for Cvpropygus feeding on algae. The consuniption rate for animals when feeding on algae was lower than that on moss peat. The assimilation efficiency for immature animals feeding on algae was 46% and for mature animals was 19%; the values when feeding on moss peat were 7% and lo%, respectively, The net production efficiency ranged from 35%(inimatures) to 13% (matures) and was similar on both substrates.
4. Food consumption exceeded assimilation over the range 2.5–10°C, but the two converged from 2.5 to 0°C. Immature Cryptopygus maintained a net positive energy balance over 0–10°C, whilst below 1S°C respiration exceeded assimilation for mature individuals.
5. An estimate of the annual dry matter consumption (7 g m-1 y-1) by Ctypropygus in a moss turf at Signy Island agrees with one based on respiration data alone (Davis, 1981). The consumption at an alga-dominated site was c . 26 g m-2 y-l, and Crypropygus may have a locally limiting effect on net priniary production at such sites.  相似文献

Induced breeding of Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch.) was studied in laboratory aquaria. Quantitative and qualitative data on pre-mating, mating, and post-mating behaviour and related parameters were recorded. Among the pairs examined, 83% spawned successfully. Mating behaviour started between 6 and 15 h after administration of pituitary hormones. The number of enfoldings varied from 25 to 350. Over 93% of the released eggs hatched within 21–24 h at temperature 24–31°C.  相似文献

A laboratory calibration experiment was conducted to determine the relationship between nucleic acid-based variables and growth rate in young-of-the-year winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus . Three temperatures and three feeding levels were used to produce a variety of growth rates. Nucleic acid analyses were conducted on white muscle tissue using an ultraviolet absorption assay. RNA concentration (μg mg−1 wet tissue mass) and the ratio of RNA:DNA ( R RD) were positively correlated with a mass-based instantaneous growth coefficient ( G M) ( r = 0·42 and 0·72, respectively). Fifty-one per cent of the variability in growth rate was explained by the simple linear regression G M=−0·02615 + 0·00848 R RD ( P < 0·001). This model can be used to estimate recent growth rates for early juvenile winter flounder (27–52 mm standard length) at temperatures ranging from 11 to 24° C.  相似文献

The response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to different concentrations of Pb2+ was investigated. The results demonstrated that the growth of S. cerevisiae in the presence of Pb2+ showed a lag phase much longer than that in the absence of Pb2+. The inhibition was dependent upon Pb2+ concentrations. The Pb2+ at a concentration of 5 μM inhibited the microbial growth by approximately 30% with regard to control, whereas Pb2+ at concentration of 2 μM did not have a significant effect on the microbial growth. The existence of Pb2+ did not perturb cell-protein synthesis and there was a good correlation between dry cell weights and total protein content (R 2 = 0.98). The RNA/DNA ratio in the microbial cells varied with Pb2+ concentration and there was a significant positive correlation between Pb2+ concentration and the RNA/DNA ratio. The microbial assimilation of ammonium ion was inhibited by the presence of Pb2+ in the medium; when Pb2+ concentration was 10 μM, the microbial ammonium assimilation was inhibited about 50%, in comparison with the control experiment.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Egg survival (ES, percentage of eggs hatched in vitro ), reproductive success (RS, percentage of live young released from the brood pouch) and brood development lime ( d , days) in four populations of Gammarus fossarum and two populations of Gammarus roeseli were studied, in the laboratory at water temperatures of 2.0–26.1°C. Intraspecific differences between populations were not significant, but interspecific differences were found between the two species.
2. In natural stream populations, the reproductive period of G. fossarum lasted from December to September, that of G. roeseli from March to September.
3. In the experimental temperature range 2–26°C, 73% of the total number (771) of G. fossarum females and 69% of 469 G. roeseli females were ovigerous. Of these, 45% of G. fossarum and 43% of G. roeseli females successfully released live young from their brood pouches.
4. For G. fossarum , the optimum temperatures were 11.4°C for ES, where 76% of the eggs hatched, and 11.8°C for RS, where 77% of the females released live young from their brood pouches. For G. roseli , the optimum temperatures were 13.5°C for ES (51% hatched) and 14.0°C for RS (76% released). Over 50% of eggs hatched at temperatures of 3.6–19.2°C in G. fossarum and at 1 1.9–15.1°C in G. roeseli . Development time increased from 12 days at 21.9°C to 251 days at 2.0°C in G. fossarum , and from 10 days at 24.1°C to 212 days at 4.1°C in G. roeseli .

Energy budgets were computed from data obtained for Daphnia pulex cultured under nine light intensities, polarized light and four wavelength ranges. The percent assimilation of preadult animals is highest at intensities above 7 ft-c. Net efficiency of growth was highest (> 50%) and the net efficiency of respiration was lowest ( < 49%) at intensities less than 28 ft-c. The percent assimilation of adult animals was highest ( > 10%) at 110, 55 and 14 ft-c. Under the nine intensities the gross efficiencies of growth were less than 1 % and net efficiencies of growth varied from 3.9 to 7.3%. Gross efficiencies of respiration were highest above 7 ft-c. The net efficiency of respiration usually varied between 20 and 30% and the lowest was 9.8% at 1.7 ft-c. and the highest was 50.1% at 110 ft-c. Gross efficiency of reproduction varied from 2.6% at 3.5 ft-c to 12.6% at 14 ft-c and generally varied between 4 and 7.5%. Net efficiency of reproduction varied from 45.9% at 110 ft-c to 84.3% at 1.7 ft-c and usually varied from 62 to 75% at other light intensities. The ratio of energy of respiration to energy of growth and reproduction ranged from 12% to 1.7 ft-c to 105.3% at 110 ft-c. This ratio usually varied from 25 to 34% at 14 ft-c or less and exceeded 37% at intensities above 14 ft-c. The percent assimilation (3.5%), gross (2.0%), and net (56.3%) efficiencies of respiration of preadult animals raised under polarized light were higher than for those at a similar, nonpolarized, intensity. The net efficiency of growth (43.7%) was lower under polarized light. The percent assimilation, gross efficiencies of growth, reproduction and respiration, net efficiencies of growth and reproduction of adult animals under polarized light (6.6 ft-c) were lower than for those under 7 ft-c. For preadult animals assimilation efficiencies were lower in wavelength treatments than in white light or darkness. The gross efficiencies of growth and respiration were lowest under red wavelengths and the net efficiencies of growth were lowest and respiration highest under green wavelengths. For adult animals, the assimilation efficiencies were lower in the wavelength treatments than those obtained in other light treatments. While the gross efficiencies of growth, reproduction and respiration were generally lower, the net efficiencies of growth and reproduction were generally within the range of values for other light conditions. The net efficiencies of respiration, except for red wavelengths, were lower than those for other light conditions except at 1.7 ft-c. The ratio of energy of respiration to energy of growth and reproduction showed similar trends. The effects of wavelength are generally separable from the effects of light intensity.  相似文献

Food consumption, gut transit times and assimilation efficiencies of the temperate fishes Lipophrys pholis and Parablennius sanguinolentus (Blenniidae) and Gobius cobitis (Gobiidae. when fed the green alga Ulva lactuca were determined at four temperatures in the laboratory. Food consumption increased and gut transit times decreased with increase in temperature in all three species. Assimilation efficiencies for algal carbon and nitrogen did not vary with temperature in G. cobitis . Carbon but not nitrogen assimilation efficiency varied with temperature in P. sanguinolentus , and both carbon and nitrogen assimilation efficiencies changed broadly with temperature in L. pholis , the most omnivorous of the three fishes. Assimilation efficiencies of all three species were generally within the previously reported ranges for herbivorous marine fishes. These species are thus clearly capable of extracting energy from algal food sources.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Assimilation budgets (i.e. assimilation = respiration + excretion + production) are presented for cohorts of P. zietziana in two salt lakes. Shrimps in Pink Lake had an assimilation rate of 1631.6 kJ m−2 year −1, those in Lake Cundare 212.1 kJ m−2 year−1. In both lakes, respiration accounted for 60–80% of assimilation. Assimilation rates for individuals (derived as assimilation = ingestion minus faecal output) are also given and compared with respiratory rates of individuals. The comparisons indicated that energy was often consumed at a higher rate by respiration than it could be supplied by assimilation. Starvation due to a low assimilation efficiency was suggested as a cause of the consistent mortality, variable growth rate of individuals and unpredictable recruitment which were characteristic of the cohorts of P. zietziana in both lakes. An analysis of mortality showed that the young had the poorest survival, as predicted by a theoretical model of a starving zooplankter and a comparison of the increase with weight of ingestion and respiration. Gross growth efficiency (production: assimilation) was 15–30%, about the same as published data on Anostracans. Net growth efficiency (production : consumption) was 5–12% and generally lower than published values reflecting the difficulty P. zietziana has in balancing its budget.  相似文献

The growth properties of juvenile spotted wolffish Anarhichas minor reared at 4, 6, 8 and 12° C, and a group reared under 'temperature steps', (T‐step) i.e . with temperature reduced successively from 12 to 9 and 6° C were investigated. Growth rate and feed efficiency ration was significantly influenced by temperature and fish size. Overall growth rate was highest at 6° C (0·68% day−1) and lowest at 12° C (0·48% day−1), while the 4 and 8° C, and the T‐step groups had similar overall growth rates, i.e . 0·59, 0·62 and 0·51% day−1 respectively. Optimal temperature for growth ( T opt G ) and feed efficiency ratio (Topt FCE) decreased as fish size increased, indicating an ontogenetic reduction in T opt G and T opt FCE. The results suggest a T opt G of juvenile spotted wolffish in the size range 135–380 g, dropping from 7·9° C for 130–135 g to 6·6° C for 360–380 g juveniles. The T opt FCE dropped from 7·4° C for 120–150 g to 6·5° C for 300–380 g juveniles. A wider parabolic regression curve between growth, feed efficiency ratio and temperature as fish size increased, may indicate increased temperature tolerance with size. Individual growth rates varied greatly at all time periods within the experimental temperatures, but at the same time significant size rank correlations were maintained and this may indicate stable size hierarchies in juvenile spotted wolffish.  相似文献

Based on population data, growth and development rate, and feeding and respiratory rates, energy budgets were constructed for a wild population of Daphnia ambigua Scourfield in a pond at The University of Kansas, Lawrence. The relationships between monthly efficiency of energy transfer and food or temperature were analyzed by multiple and partial correlation. Annual energy consumption, based on seston concentration, by D. ambigua population amounted to 410.1 kcal/m3. Of this, 8.4% was used in somatic growth (Pg) and egg production (Pr); 2.7% was lost as exuvia (Pex) and 17.1% was lost in respiration (R). The amount of energy consumed lost as ammonia excretion and faeces was 1.4 and 70.4%, respectively. The total annual energy flow (assimilation) was 115.6 kcal/ m3; annual assimilation efficiency (28.2%) was lower than values reported for other planktonic Crustacea. Annual net production efficiency was 39.3% (32.8%, excluding exuvia). The annual P/R ratio was 0.64 to 0.66. The mean daily P accounted for 9.3% of the mean daily gross primary production of phytoplankton. The mean daily assimilation accounted for 23.6% of gross primary production, or 56.2% of net primary production.  相似文献

We showed that temperature responses of dark respiration for foliage of Pinus radiata could be approximated by Arrhenius kinetics, whereby E 0 determines shape of the exponential response and denotes overall activation energy of respiratory metabolism. Reproducible and predictable deviation from strict Arrhenius kinetics depended on foliage age, and differed between R CO2 and R O2. Inhibition of oxygen reduction ( R O2) by cyanide (inhibiting COX) or SHAM (inhibiting AOX) resulted in reproducible changes of the temperature sensitivity for R O2, but did not affect R CO2. Enthalpic growth – preservation of electrons in anabolic products – could be approximated with knowledge of four variables: activation energies ( E 0) for both R CO2 and R O2, and basal rates of respiration at a low reference temperature ( R REF). Rates of enthalpic growth by P. radiata needles were large in spring due to differences between R REF of oxidative decarboxylation and that of oxygen reduction, while overall activation energies for the two processes were similar. Later during needle development, enthalpic growth was dependent on differences between E 0 for R CO2 as compared with R O2, and increased E 0( R O2) indicated greater contributions of cytochrome oxidase to accompany the switch from carbohydrate sink to source. Temperature-dependent increments in stored energy can be calculated as the difference between R CO2▵ H CO2 and R O2▵ H O2.  相似文献

1. Growth of seedlings of 15 rain-forest tree species was compared under controlled conditions, at six different light levels (3, 6, 12, 25, 50 and 100% daylight).
2. Most plant variables showed strong ontogenetic changes; they were highly dependent on the biomass of the plant.
3. Growth rate was highest at intermediate light levels (25–50%) above which it declined. Most plant variables showed a curvilinear response to irradiance, with the largest changes at the lowest light levels.
4. There was a consistent ranking in growth between species; species that were fast growing in a low-light environment were also fast growing in a high-light environment.
5. At low light, interspecific variation in relative growth rate was determined mainly by differences in a morphological trait, the leaf area ratio (LAR), whereas at high light it was determined mainly by differences in a physiological trait, the net assimilation rate (NAR).
6. NAR became a stronger determinant of growth than LAR in more than 10–15% daylight. As light availability in the forest is generally much lower than this threshold level, it follows that interspecific variation in growth in a forest environment is mainly owing to variation in morphology.  相似文献

Polynomial equations, relating the growth rate of Yersinia enterocolitica to temperature (0–25°C) and pH (4.5–6-5) in a liquid medium were constructed for four different acidulants. The logarithm of the time for a 100-fold increase in bacterial numbers could be represented by a quadratic response surface function of pH and temperature. The interactions between pH and temperature on growth rate were found to be additive. Values for a 2 log cycle increase in growth derived from the model were in good agreement with experimental values. Predictions from the quadratic model and from a square root model were compared with experimental values in laboratory media and UHT milk. The mean square error (MSE) for the quadratic response surface model was smaller than that for the square root model in 81% of cases. In UHT milk the square root model increasingly underestimated growth rate, as the temperature decreased and would 'fail dangerous' if used for predictive purposes. This indicated that the response surface model is more reliable for predicting the growth of Y. enterocolitica under conditions of sub-optimal temperature and pH.  相似文献

Among eight populations of grayling Thymallus thymallus that shared common ancestors 8–28 generations earlier, mean egg mortality ranged between 1·2 and 59·8%; mortality during yolk sac absorption was low (0middot;0–8middot;0%) and mean survival to swim-up was high (90–97%), with two exceptions (20% and 50%). Survival probabilities differed significantly among populations, even after statistically adjusting for size at swim-up and water depth, water velocity, gravel size and temperature. Development time from fertilization to first observed swim-up was significantly different among populations, ranging between 27 to 40 days, or 264 to 280 degree-days. Mean specific growth rates during the first external feeding period varied between 1·2 and 2·0% day-1 among populations. Population-specific growth rates were independent of temperature. Rates of divergence were of the same order as in other salmonid studies showing rapid evolution. The phenotypic differences may be due partly to genetic differentiation among the populations.  相似文献

Juvenile (12–152 g) shortfinned eels Anguilla australis and longfinned eels A. dieffenbachia caught in New Zealand streams were fed squid mantle Nototodarus spp. 4 days per week in laboratory experiments. A linear multiple regression equation showed the amount of food eaten (0–2·7% w day−1) explained 77·7% of the variation in specific growth rates (–0·60 to +1·07% w day−1) among individual eels, while previous growth rates, water temperature (10·0–20·6°C), and eel weight (12–152 g) explained a further 5·6, 1·4 and 0·8%, respectively. Growth in length ranged from –0·3 to +0·9 mm day−1. Eels which were starved and then given high rations grew substantially faster than expected. Once growth rates were adjusted for differences in ration and other factors, there were no significant differences in growth rates between species or individual fish. Growth of shortfinned eels fed maximum rations of commercial eel food depended on fish size and water temperatures and ceased below 9·0°C. Growth rates in the wild were substantially less than the maximum possible, after seasonal changes in water temperatures were taken into account, indicating that food supplies and not low water temperatures were controlling growth rates in the wild.  相似文献

Limanda limanda (35–225 g) fed during daytime when trained to use demand feeders under natural photoperiods. Under continuous illumination different feeding rhythms developed which were detected by periodogram analysis. Interfeeding periods (P hours) varied with body weight (W grams) and temperature (T° C) over the range 6.5–15° C as: In P=4.4 – 0.167 (In W) – 0.05 T. Daily food intake (D grams increased with both temperature and size (In D = 0.099 T + 0.579 In W – 3.49). Relative daily intake (R as % body weight, b.w) increased with temperature but decreased with size (In R = 0.099T–0.41 In W + 1.05). These changes in daily intake are primarily caused by changes in feeding frequency; the amount eaten at a meal is relatively constant save at low temperatures (6.5° C) when appetite is suppressed. Dilution of the food with kaolin (from 4.8 to 2.2 kcal/g) did not cause a compensatory increase in meal size or frequency. Gastric emptying time (GET hours) measured by X-radiography changed with body weight, temperature and relative meal size (M % b.w.) as In GET = 0.68 In M + 0.39 In W – 0.035T + 1.46. With the exception of the lowest temperature (6.5° C) interfeeding periods closely followed GET (P = 1.09 GET – 2.6) supporting the proposal that stomach fullness is a major factor controlling appetite in the dab.  相似文献

使用树轮生态学方法研究了山西芦芽山建群种白杄(Picea meyeri)径向生长对气候变暖的响应状况, 发现随着气温升高, 不同海拔白杄生长与气候因子关系的变化存在差别。研究区气温可以分为1958-1983年的气温降低阶段和1984-2007年的气温升高阶段。由气温降低阶段进入气温升高阶段, 低海拔白杄树轮年表的序列间相关系数和第一主成分解释量均增大, 而高海拔白杄树轮年表的序列间相关系数和第一主成分解释量均减小, 表明气候条件对低海拔白杄生长的影响增强而对高海拔白杄生长的影响减弱。随着气温升高, 不同海拔白杄径向生长与气候因子的关系均出现了变化。1958-1983年, 低海拔(2 060 m)白杄生长与7月降水量显著正相关(p < 0.05), 而在1984-2007年, 这一关系表现为极显著正相关(p < 0.01), 同时与生长季中5-7月平均气温呈现显著负相关(p < 0.05)。海拔2 330 m, 白杄在1958-1983年与7月降水量极显著正相关(p < 0.01), 进入1984-2007年后与气候因子没有显著相关关系。海拔2 440 m, 白杄生长由1958-1983年的与气候因子没有显著相关关系转变为1984-2007年的与上一年10月平均气温显著负相关(p < 0.05)。高海拔(2 540 m)白杄生长在1958-1983年与上一年11月平均气温极显著负相关(p < 0.01), 在1984-2007年与上一年10月、当年1月平均气温和6月降水量均显著负相关(p < 0.05)。滑动相关分析结果表明, 随着气温升高, 低海拔主要气候因子对生长的影响增强, 而高海拔主要气候因子对生长的影响减弱, 这可能成为高海拔白杄生长对气温升高敏感性降低的原因。在气候变暖的驱动下, 海拔引起的白杄生长与气候因子关系的差异发生了变化。  相似文献
