The histological method developed by Stout and Paine ([1992] Am. J. Phys. Antropol. 87:111–115) for estimating age at death using the clavicle is tested on a known age independent sample from a nineteenth century cemetery near Spitalfriedhof St. Johann in Basel, Switzerland. The mean absolute difference between reported ages and histologically predicted ages is 5.5 years. Mean predicted age for the sample is different from mean reported age. This difference is accounted for by differences in the age distributions between the original autopsy sample used to derive the histological age-predicting formula and the cemetery sample, and an inherent loss of reliability of histological age predictions for the skeletal remains of older individuals. A new formula based upon the combined original autopsy sample of Stout and Paine (1992) and the Swiss cemetery sample is presented. It is recommended that this formula be used when estimating ages for older individuals or archaeological skeletal samples. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

For individualization of a biomechanical model, it is necessary to estimate the muscle attachments of the person to whom it is to be adapted. One of the methods to estimate muscle attachments is to use model transformations to transform a model with known muscle attachments to the bones of a person. We hypothesize that the location and shape of muscle attachment sites correlate with the shape of the bones they are attached to. If this hypothesis holds, it is possible to predict the location of muscle attachments when the shape of the bones is known. To validate this hypothesis, geometric models of three sets of shoulder bones were built. These models consist of 3-D surface models of the scapula, clavicle, and humerus, with the muscle attachment contours connected to them. By means of geometric transformations, the models were transformed, so the muscle attachments of the different data sets could be compared. Using these techniques, 50 per cent of the muscle attachment contours could be predicted with high accuracy. The muscle attachment contours that could not be predicted were all influenced by measurement errors. For 30 per cent of the muscle attachment contours, it was not possible to distinguish the interindividual differences from the inaccuracies of the method used. From this study, we concluded that most muscle attachment contours can be predicted by means of geometric models of the bones.  相似文献

The gravimetric density of humeri, radii, femora and tibiae from a series of 274 male and female skeletons of rhesus monkeys, Macaca mulatta, was determined for fetal, young and adult periods. The ages of 171 of the animals were known: they ranged from 57 days of gestation to 13.6 years; the ages of an additional 103 skeletons were estimated. The mean density of the fetal bones was found to increase linearly with age and was higher for males than females, and higher for the superior than for the inferior limb bones. During the young period the pattern of increase in density can be represented by a power-type curve, and the density is significantly higher in females than in males and in superior than in inferior limb bones. The densities of the long limb bones of the adult skeletons show a slight, but not significant, negative trend with increasing age. In this age group the mean densities are higher for males than females and higher for the superior than for the inferior limb bones. The percentage ash weight was determined for the total skeleton and for 21 subdivisions of 23 postnatal skeletons with estimated ages. The skull and long limb bones were found to have higher mean percentage ash weights than the vertebral segments and the sternum. Both the density and the percentage ash weight of the Macaca mulatta skeletons examined exceed those found in our earlier studies of the human skeleton.  相似文献

This study completes previously reported ages for timing of epiphyseal union in the postcranial skeleton in a recent sample, with data from the scapula, clavicle, humerus, radius, and ulna. A sample of 121 individuals between the ages of 9 and 29 (females = 65, males = 56) was derived from the Lisbon documented skeletal collection. Epiphyseal union was scored at 16 anatomical locations, using a three-stage scheme: 1) no union; 2) partial union; and 3) completed union, all traces of fusion having disappeared. In the upper limb, the epiphyses of the elbow are the first to fuse at around 11 to 15 years of age, followed by those of the shoulder and wrist. In the scapular girdle, the coracoid area is the first to fuse, followed by the glenoid surface and remaining epiphyses, with the medial clavicle fusing last, by the age of 25-27. There is a sex difference in maturation, with females showing an advance relative to males of about 2 years in the upper limb. Sex differences in maturation are less noticeable in the scapular girdle, but data suggest that females are also ahead of males. Results suggest overall similar age ranges for stages of union as previous dry bone observations, but some studies show significant divergences which seem to derive from methodological issues. Although some radiographic reference standards provide comparable age ranges, they should probably be avoided when aging skeletal remains.  相似文献

Linear relationships were found between body length–scale radius, body length-cleithrum length and body length-urohyal length ( r =0·949, 0·984 and 0·974 respectively) in silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix. Out of 180 comparisons, which were made between different methods of back-calculating length and ageing structures at ages 2-7 years, the differences were not significant ( P ≥ 0·05) in 132 (73·3%) cases. There were no significant differences among different methods in older age classes and between the Fraser-Lee method and body proportional method (BPH) at all ages. The results demonstrated that in all structures, back-calculated lengths estimated by the scale proportional hypotheses (SPH) were less than the other methods. For scales, SPH was similar to the direct proportional method of Dahl-Lea (DPM) but for cleithra and urohyal bones it was similar to BPH and Fraser-Lee. As the fish increased in age, the differences between back-calculated lengths decreased. When lengths were back-calculated using cleithra and urohyal bones, differences between the structures at age 2 years were 17 mm from DPM, 33 mm from SPH, 37 mm from BPH and 37 mm from Fraser-Lee, while at age 8 years mean differences were 7 mm from DPM and 8 mm from the SPH, BPH and Fraser-Lee methods. It is suggested that the differences would be less if: (1) back-calculated lengths are based on a large number of random samples; (2) measurements of scale radius, cleithrum length and urohyal length were precise; (3) determination of focus or origin were precise; (4) the sampling of scales were from the same row.  相似文献

The skeletal age of each individual bone of the hand-wrist was assessed in serial radiographs of 169 Melbourne children. Seven different methods were used to obtain area skeletal ages from these bone skeletal ages. Methods employing arithmetic means of all the bone skeletal ages, excluding only extreme values, excluding those derived from the carpals or from other selected bones yielded similar means during the age range studied in each sex. There were large, but not significant, differences between the means derived from averages of the skeletal ages of the most and least mature bones and those derived from all the bone skeletal ages. A system of weighting and exclusion of bone skeletal ages led to the recording of area skeletal ages that differed from the others and fluctuated markedly for individuals until ossification had occurred in every carpal bone. The findings suggest that the exclusion of the skeletal ages of the carpal bones or the use of selected skeletal ages could lead to quicker assessments without real changes in means and variability.  相似文献

Comparison of hand long-bone lengths and variances in published measurements of North American Caucasoid, Venezuelan, and English individuals, and of their metacarpophalangeal pattern profiles (MPP), revealed systematic differences between samples from infancy through adulthood. The variances of Venezuelan males tend to be larger than those of Americans, especially under 9 years of age. The same trend was observed for females, but to a lesser degree. The English sample showed variance similar to that of Venezuelans and Americans. Below 7 years of age, bones of Venezuelans were longer than those of Americans, except the distal phalanges, which always were longer in the latter, as were all bones after age 17. The index finger's middle and distal phalanges of Americans were relatively longer than the other bones at all ages. Females also showed this general trend, though not as clearly. Venezuelan adults had longer first and second metacarpals and proximal phalanges than the English adult homologs. American adults had all bones longer than those of English adults. The English adults showed a "typical" MPP, characterized by shorter proximal phalanges, both when compared with Venezuelan and with American adults. Genetic rather than environmental causes are likely as an explanation for these differences. This warned us against the indiscriminate use of any "standard" sample from a different population to establish objective profile patterns and sizes in abnormal cases, as illustrated with one example.  相似文献

Adult stature and the age at menarche among individuals from Zapotec-speaking communities in the Valley of Oaxaca in southern Mexico are considered in a secular perspective. Four sets of observations are utilized: (1) adult stature in males and females from five rural communities; (2) age at menarche in adult women and school girls from a single rural community; (3) earlier studies of adult stature in the Valley of Oaxaca; and (4) estimated stature from long bones excavated in various archaeological sites in the Valley of Oaxaca. There were no significant differences among the five communities for stature; hence, the data were pooled for analysis and comparison. Results of linear regression of stature and stature adjusted for the estimated effects of aging after 30 years of age on year of birth indicate negligible secular changes in either sex. Comparisons with statures from earlier surveys, the earliest dates to 1899, also indicate negligible changes. When adult women are grouped according to age, there are no differences in mean ages at menarche between the older and younger women. Mean age at menarche for the total adult sample is 14.53 ± 0.08 years, which compares favorably with the probit estimate for school girls, 14.70 ± 0.32 years. These results thus suggest virtually no secular change in adult size and maturity of the Zapotec-speaking population in the Valley of Oaxaca over the past 80 years. Differences in stature between contemporary populations and estimated statures from long bones from several archaeological sites in Oaxaca are small, and thus suggests little secular change over the past one to two–thousand years.  相似文献

The movements of the humerus, the clavicle, and the scapula are not completely independent. The coupled pattern of movement of these bones is called the shoulder rhythm. To date, multiple studies have focused on providing regression-based 3-D shoulder rhythms, in which the orientations of the clavicle and the scapula are estimated by the orientation of the humerus. In this study, six existing regression-based shoulder rhythms were evaluated by an independent dataset in terms of their predictability. The datasets include the measured orientations of the humerus, the clavicle, and the scapula of 14 participants over 118 different upper arm postures. The predicted orientations of the clavicle and the scapula were derived from applying those regression-based shoulder rhythms to the humerus orientation. The results indicated that none of those regression-based shoulder rhythms provides consistently more accurate results than the others. For all the joint angles and all the shoulder rhythms, the RMSE are all greater than 5°. Among those shoulder rhythms, the scapula lateral/medial rotation has the strongest correlation between the predicted and the measured angles, while the other thoracoclavicular and thoracoscapular bone orientation angles only showed a weak to moderate correlation. Since the regression-based shoulder rhythm has been adopted for shoulder biomechanical models to estimate shoulder muscle activities and structure loads, there needs to be further investigation on how the predicted error from the shoulder rhythm affects the output of the biomechanical model.  相似文献

The sternal end of the clavicle has been illustrated to be useful in aging young adults, however, no studies have investigated what age‐related changes occur to the sternal end post epiphyseal fusion. In this study, three morphological features (i.e., surface topography, porosity, and osteophyte formation) were examined and scored using 564 clavicles of individuals of European ancestry (n = 318 males; n = 246 females), with known ages of 40+ years, from four documented skeletal collections: Hamann‐Todd, Pretoria, St. Bride's, and Coimbra. An ordinal scoring method was developed for each of the three traits. Surface topography showed the strongest correlation with age, and composite scores (formed by summing the three separate trait scores) indicated progressive degeneration of the surface with increasing chronological age. Linear regression analyses were performed on the trait scores to produce pooled‐sample age estimation equations. Blind tests of the composite score method and regression formulae on 56 individuals, aged 40+ years, from Christ Church Spitalfields, suggest accuracies of 96.4% for both methods. These preliminary results display the first evidence of the utility of the sternal end of the clavicle in aging older adult individuals. However, in the current format, these criteria should only be applied to individuals already identified as over 40 years in order to refine the age ranges used for advanced age. These findings do suggest the sternal end of the clavicle has potential to aid age estimates beyond the traditional “mature adult” age category (i.e., 46+ years), and provides several suggestions for future research. Late Epigravettian postcranial human remains from the Arene Candide cave (Finale Ligure, Savona, Italy) were compared with the Neolithic sample found in the upper levels of the same site. Data on length, diaphyseal circumference and diameter of clavicle, humerus, radius, femur and tibia were collected from male specimens having all these bones. The Epigravettian sample is characterized by significantly greater tibial length, robustness and platycnemia, significantly lower circumferences in the upper limb bones and the clavicle, and a high degree of asymmetry. Variations observed in lower limb bones are those expected on the basis of the different functional requirements of a hunting and gathering economy compared to a more sedentary, food producing economy. Differences in the upper limb bones and the clavicle are less explicable. However, considering that in spite of a more slender structure, the Epigravettian bones show evidence of vigorous use, variation in upper limb could result from qualitatively different involvements.  相似文献

Frequency of pathology and of some anomalies in skeletons of Bedouin living about 200 BP, uncovered in the Israeli Negev, is considered in relation to particular bone, sex, age-group, and kinds of defects. The environment of the Bedouin in relation to his “health-status” is noted. Two-thirds of the skeletons had one or more different bones with defects. Incidence of crania with defects was: males, 26%; females, 18%; the highest incidence occurred at age 35–49. Alveolar abscesses occurred in 28% of maxillae, 9% of mandibles. Of the long bones, the tibia was most frequently affected (15%): swelling of the shaft, relatively common, was apparently caused by bejel, a non-venereal form of syphilis, similar to yaws, endemic to the Bedouin. Forty-eight percent had defective vertebrae, usually an arthritic manifestation of one kind or another; half of this group had defects in more than one region of the spine. Defects also occurred relatively frequently in the innominata, sacrum, scapula, and clavicle, mostly arthritic lesions except in the sacrum in which the percentage with sacral hiatus was high. Average age at death was, males, 43 years, females, 33 years (adults only), and 28 years for all ages.  相似文献

BackgroundResearch has shown that postoperative shoulder imbalance is a common problem after spinal fusion in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The best radiographic predictor has not yet been determined and results are inconsistent. This study was to investigate whether using medial and lateral shoulder parameters can effectively achieve postoperative shoulder balance.MethodsA prospective database of AIS undergoing posterior spinal fusion were reviewed. Patient demographics and radiological parameters including radiographic shoulder height (RSH), clavicle angle, T1-tilt and first-rib angle at baseline, 6 weeks and last minimal follow up of 2 years were recorded. Correlations between radiological parameters were assessed using Pearson’s correlation coefficients. Multivariable linear models identified predictors associated with increased RSH.Results219 patients (mean age:13.7 years; 81.7% female) were included. The mean follow-up time was 2.8 years (range:2.0-7.0). The mean RSH at baseline, 6 weeks and last follow up was improved significantly at 95.8%. Preoperative (r=0.8; p<0.001) and post-operative measurements of RSH at 6-week (r=0.9; p<0.001) and last follow up (r=0.9; p<0.001) correlated strongly with clavicle angle measured at respective time-points. In a multivariable linear model, we noted marginal increase in clavicle angle (+4.3°; p<0.001) to be associated with increased RSH. On the contrary, first rib angle and T1-tilt demonstrated moderate to weak correlation with RSH.ConclusionClavicle angle is strongly consistent with RSH. First rib angle and T1-tilt as demonstrate medial shoulder balance are moderate to weak correlation. Leveling T1 tilt and first rib angle do not guarantee the postoperative shoulder balance. 了解古代儿童的断奶模式和喂养方式,可望为揭示古代儿童的营养状况、生长发育以及其死亡原因提供有价值的重要信息。近些年来,通过对古代儿童骨骼的C、N稳定同位素分析,重建古代儿童的断奶模式和喂养方式,成为国际生物考古界的研究前沿,但在我国尚无任何相关报道。为此,本文以安徽滁州薄阳城遗址人骨(包含不同年龄阶段的儿童和成年人)样品为研究材料,通过对同一个体肋骨和肢骨的C、N稳定同位素分析和比较,重点探讨了我国西周时期儿童的断奶模式及喂养方式。研究结果显示:儿童在2岁已有辅食的摄入,大多数儿童在3-4岁已经完成断奶;断奶后的儿童,其食物中包含更多的植物作为辅食。本研究,印证了我国历史文献中有关儿童喂养模式的最早记载(唐代孙思邈的医书《千金方》),也为系统探索我国古代儿童的断奶模式和喂养方式提供了很好的范例。  相似文献

Intraskeletal variation in the composition of carbon (delta(13)C) and nitrogen (delta(15)N) stable isotopes measured in collagen is tested from various human bones and dentine. Samples were taken from the femur, rib, and petrous part of the temporal bone from well-preserved skeletons of both adults (n = 34) and subadults (n = 24). Additional samples of dentine from the root of 1st molars were taken from 16 individuals. The skeletal material is from a medieval cemetery (AD 1200-1573) in Holbaek, Denmark. Our results indicate that the petrous bone has an isotopic signal that differs significantly from that of femur and rib within the single skeleton (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively), with only minor variation seen between femur and rib. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the petrous bone and the 1st molar. The intraskeletal variation may reflect differences in turnover rate among skeletal elements. The inner periosteal layer of the petrous bone is formed in uterus and does not undergo any further remodelling after the age of 2 years, whereas the rib and femur have a continuous turnover rate of approximately 5 and 10-20 years, respectively. From the results of this study it is believed the petrous bone may be a new useful bone element and a supplement or a proxy for teeth in the analysis of early dietary patterns as it may reflect diet in fetal stages and early years of life.  相似文献

AGE DETERMINATION IN MANATEES USING GROWTH-LAYER-GROUP COUNTS IN BONE   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Growth layers were observed in histological preparations of bones of known-age, known minimum-age, and tetracycline-marked free-ranging and captive Florida manatees ( Trichechus manatus latirostris ), substantiating earlier preliminary findings of other studies. Detailed analysis of 17 new case histories showed that growth-layer group (GLG) counts in the periotic bone were consistent with known age, or time since tetracycline administration, but were less reliable in other bones. GLG counts were also made in periotic bones of 1,196 Florida manatees of unknown age found dead from 1974 through 1991. These counts were conducted in order to assess variability and to determine relationships among estimated age, size, sex, and degree of bone resorption. Resorption can interfere with accuracy of GLG counts. This effect does not occur until ages greater than about 15 yr and body lengths greater than 300 cm are attained. GLGs were also observed in periotic bones of Antillean manatees ( Trichechus manatus manatus ) but were not validated against known-age specimens. Use of GLG counts in the periotic bone is suitable for application to studies of population dynamics and other age-related aspects of manatee biology.  相似文献

Tooth emergence data from a mixed-longitudinal sample of 58 chimpanzees of known age were analyzed using probit and survival techniques to produce median emergence ages, ranges of variability, and emergence sequences for primary and permanent teeth. Between-group comparisons were made to test for statistically significant differences in emergence ages. No such differences were found between right and left sides, or between maxilla and mandible, for any primary or permanent teeth. Male-female comparisons did demonstrate significant emergence-age differences for some teeth, although they were not always bilaterally symmetrical. More complete data are required to further clarify the nature of sex differences in tooth emergence in chimpanzees. Regression models for age prediction from the number of emerged teeth were generated and indicate that males achieve a given number of emerged teeth at a significantly later age than females. However, when fewer than five teeth have emerged, males are predicted to be younger than females. The sizable root mean square error values for these models suggest that this method of age prediction has limited usefulness owing to the amount of variability in timing of tooth emergence in chimpanzees. The implications of these data for studies on tooth emergence in early hominids are addressed.  相似文献

Hand-wrist radiographs were made of 4,551 Shiraz school children and well babies of known age who were also weighed and measured. Medical examinations were not made and selection was biased in favor of the advantaged child because the urban standard of living is higher than the rural in Iran and because the poorest children may not attend elementary school and never attend high school. Nevertheless, height, weight and bone age fell rapidly below the tenth Iowa percentile by the age of two years and did not begin recovery until the age of six years. The distribution of the bone ages in each group was symetrical, not bi-modal. Bone age offered no advantage over height age as an index of development but analysis of the radiographs provided evidence that the retardation was pathologic rather than genetic. Ossification of individual epiphyses was recorded in 3,333 hands and a marked discrepancy between carpal and phalangeal bones, with the carpal bones most retarded, was documented. A high incidence of pseudoepiphyses was noted.  相似文献

The human clavicle provides the bony connection between the upper extremity and the axial skeleton and it is reported to be among the first bones ossified and the last bone to fuse. Clavicle development of the studied mammals shows a combination of intramembranous and endochondrial ossification. The covering of its joints in adult humans differs from other joints of long bones. The rat clavicle pattern morphologically appears to be partly different in comparison with the human one. These differences partially restrict the use of the rat as a model for the study of human articular cartilage but on the other hand they can provide some valuable possibilities for application in medical research and practice.  相似文献
