In the shallow-water area (0–70 m) of the Northern Bay of Safaga, 73 surface samples were studied with respect to total foraminiferal fauna. The samples cover a great variety of shallow-water environments and yielded 239 foraminiferal taxa. Based on q-mode cluster analysis, and tested by canonical discriminant analysis, the samples are grouped into 13 foraminiferal associations, each characterized by several species:
(1) Quinqueloculina mosharrafai-Borelis schlumbergeri-Brizalina simpsoni Ass.,
(2) Heterostegina depressa-Amphlstegina lessonii/bicirculata Ass.,
(3) Cibicidids-Rosalina-Amphistegina lobifera-Pseudoschlumbergerina ovata Ass.,
(4) Peneroplis planatus Ass.,
(5) Peneroplis planatus-Varidentella neostriatula Ass.,
(6) Peneroplis planatus-Coscinospira hemprichii-Varidentella neostriatula Ass.,
(7) Quinqueloculina spp. Ass.,
(8) Hauerina diversa-Sorites orbiculus Ass.,
(9) Verneuilina sp.-n Articulina pacifica-Reussella simplex Ass.,
(10) Textularia agglutinans/rugulosa-Bolivina variabilis Ass.,
(11) Textularia agglutinans-Challengerella bradyi-Elphidium jenseni/simplex Ass.,
(12) Operculina ammonoides-Adelosina laevigata-Brizalina striatula/subspathulata Ass.,
(13) Bolivina variabilis—Miliolinella-Nonion fabum-Elphidium simplex Ass.
The characteristic forms of each association are linked to specific environmental parameters and modes of life. As long as taxonomic uniformitarianism can be applied, similar associations with comparable ecological demands may also be detected in the fossil record. For comparisons with taxonomically different material the 13 associations are summarized into 4 categories each reflecting a specific type of substrate. In the fossil record these categories may be recognized by general morphological characteristics of the foraminiferal tests and by sedimentological data. The 4 substrate types are: hardground, sand (with or without seagrass and/or corals), firmground, and soft bottom.  相似文献

We studied Upper Cretaceous and Lower Paleogene benthic foraminifera from the Agost section (southeastern Spain) to infer paleobathymetrical changes and paleoenvironmental turnover across the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/P) transition. Benthic foraminifera indicate uppermost bathyal depths at Agost during the Abathomphalus mayaroensis Biochron (from about 400 kyr before the K/P boundary) through the early Plummerita hantkeninoides Biochron (about 120–150 kyr before that boundary). The depth increased to middle bathyal for the remainder of the Cretaceous, and remained so for the Danian part of the studied section (Parasubbotina pseudobulloides Biochron, at least 200 kyr after the K/P boundary). There were no perceivable bathymetrical changes at the K/P boundary, where 5% of the species became extinct, and the species composition of the benthic foraminiferal fauna changed considerably. Below the boundary, infaunal morphogroups constitute up to 65–73% of the faunas. Directly above the boundary, in the black clays of the lower Guembelitria cretacea Biozone, benthic foraminifera are rare. Several opportunistic taxa (e.g. the agglutinant Haplophragmoides sp.) have short peaks in relative abundance, possibly reflecting low-oxygen conditions as well as environmental instability, with benthos receiving food from short-lived, local blooms of primary producers. Above the clays through the end of the studied interval, epifaunal morphogroups dominate (up to 70% of the assemblages) or there is an even mixture or epifaunal and infaunal morphogroups. Infaunal groups do not recover to pre-extinction relative abundances, indicating that the food supply to the benthos did not recover fully over the studied interval (about 200 kyr after the K/P boundary). The benthic foraminiferal faunal changes are compatible with the direct and indirect effects of an asteroid impact, which severely destabilized primary producers and the oceanic food web that was dependent upon them.  相似文献

This paper documents changes in benthic foraminiferal assemblages compared with high resolution ammonite biozonation along the lower Toarcian to upper Toarcian marine succession of Southern Beaujolais in southeastern France. Eight ammonite and three benthic foraminiferal zones including five subzones are distinguished based on the occurrence of twelve foraminiferal events. Each benthic foraminiferal subzone is characterized by its taxonomic and morphogroup composition, which represents the paleoecological response of these taxa and morphotypes of benthic foraminifera in the Early Jurassic and early Middle Jurassic. Major changes in abundance and diversity occur at the end of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) and near the Early-Middle Jurassic transition. The low-abundance foraminiferal assemblages recorded in the Serpentinus ammonite Zone are interpreted as reflecting adverse environmental conditions after the T-OAE. The later recovery and development of the foraminiferal assemblages is documented in the Bifrons up to the Aalensis zones and is attributed to improved bottom water oxygenation. Common occurrences of agglutinated foraminifera represented mostly by Trochammina pulchra Ziegler in the Dispensum Zone point to an influx of cooler water masses during the late Toarcian. The morphogroup analysis carried out on the foraminifera and their paleoecological interpretations shed light on the changes in the stratigraphic record at the end of the T-OAE up to the Toarcian/Aalenian boundary.  相似文献

The effect of anoxia on Na+/H+ exchange activity was examined in acutely isolated adult rat hippocampal CA1 neurons loaded with the H+-sensitive fluorophore, BCECF. Five-minute anoxia imposed under nominally HCO3-/CO2-free conditions induced a fall in pHi, the magnitude of which was smaller following prolonged exposure to medium in which N-methyl-D-glucamine (NMDG+) was employed as an extracellular Na+ (Na(+)(o)) substitute. Also consistent with the possibility that Na+/H+ exchange becomes inhibited soon after the induction of anoxia, rates of Na(+)(o)-dependent pHi recovery from internal acid loads imposed during anoxia were slowed, compared to rates of Na(+)(o)-dependent pHi recovery observed prior to anoxia. At the time at which rates of pHi recovery were reduced during anoxia, cellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels had fallen to 35% of preanoxic levels, suggesting that ATP depletion might contribute to the observed inhibition of Na+/H+ exchange. In support, incubation of neurons with 2-deoxyglucose and antimycin A under normoxic conditions induced a fall in cellular ATP levels that was also associated with reduced Na(+)(o)-dependent rates of pHi recovery from imposed acid loads; conversely, pre-treatment with 10 mm creatine attenuated the effects of anoxia to reduce both ATP levels and Na(+)(o)-dependent rates of pHi recovery from internal acid loads. Taken together, the results are consistent with the possibility that functional Na+/H+ exchange activity in adult rat CA1 neurons declines soon after the onset of anoxia, possibly as a result of anoxia-induced falls in intracellular ATP.  相似文献

Blooms of domoic acid (DA) producing Pseudo-nitzschia, regularly occur off the coast of California. Although it has been hypothesized that these blooms are increasing in frequency, the lack of historical records limits our understanding of potential causal mechanisms. In this study, an 15-year time-series (1993–2008) of sediment trap samples collected from the Santa Barbara Basin (SBB) at 540 m were analyzed for Pseudo-nitzschia (n = 196, microscopy and SEM) and DA (n = 206, LC–MS/MS) concentrations and fluxes. Results suggest that there was an abrupt shift towards greater frequency and higher magnitude Pseudo-nitzschia blooms and toxic DA flux events in the SBB after the year 2000. SEM analysis of sediment trap material indicates that these events were mainly blooms of P. australis, with cell fluxes increasing by an order of magnitude from a maximum of 4.5 × 106 cells m−2 d−1 pre-2000, to as high as 3.2 × 108 cells m−2 d−1 thereafter. Similarly, sediment trap DA fluxes increased by an average of 13.4 μg m−2 d−1, with only one large event (>5 μg m−2 d−1) from 1993 to 1999 versus 16 large DA events from 2000 to 2008. While the causes of this abrupt shift remain ambiguous, we suggest that this shift may be related to natural climate variability associated with a change in phase of the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO) and its potential influence on the composition and magnitude of waters that are upwelled into the SBB.  相似文献

An abrupt global warming of 3–4°C occurred near the end of the Maastrichtian at 65.45–65.10 Ma. The environmental effects of this warm event are here documented based on stable isotopes and quantitative analysis of planktonic foraminifera at the South Atlantic DSDP Site 525A. Stable isotopes of individual species mark a rapid increase in temperature and a reduction in the vertical water mass stratification that is accompanied by a decrease in niche habitats, reduced species diversity and/or abundance, smaller species morphologies or dwarfing, and reduced photosymbiotic activity. During the warm event, the relative abundance of a large number of species decreased, including tropical–subtropical affiliated species, whereas typical mid-latitude species retained high abundances. This indicates that climate warming did not create favorable conditions for all tropical–subtropical species at mid-latitudes and did not cause a massive retreat in the local mid-latitude population. A noticeable exception is the ecological generalist Heterohelix dentata Stenestad that dominated during the cool intervals, but significantly decreased during the warm event. However, dwarfing is the most striking response to the abrupt warming and occurred in various species of different morphologies and lineages (e.g. biserial, trochospiral, keeled globotruncanids). Dwarfing is a typical reaction to environmental stress conditions and was likely the result of increased reproduction rates. Similarly, photosymbiotic activity appears to have been reduced significantly during the maximum warming, as indicated by decreased δ13C values. The foraminiferal response to climate change is thus multifaceted resulting in decreased species diversity, decreased species populations, increased competition due to reduced niche habitats, dwarfing and reduced photosymbiotic activity.  相似文献

The suitability of marsh sites for sea-level studies was examined based on a field study along a transect from high to low marsh. Living foraminifera at Bombay Hook (Delaware, USA) are considered to be shallow infaunal (i.e., uppermost 10 cm). Peak concentrations were found at 1–10 cm in the high marsh, 1–5 cm in the intermediate marsh, and 3–5 cm in the low marsh. However, sporadic deep infaunal inputs in the low marsh could significantly contribute to the sub-fossil assemblage. In the upper 10 cm buried (death + sub-fossil) and living assemblages showed a strong correlation, and the seasonal pattern of the buried assemblage paralleled the living one, suggesting that the buried assemblage reflected the most recent reproductive inputs. The cumulative standing crop of each dominant species was used to estimate their contribution to the buried assemblage in order to assess if the community is vertically homogeneous and, therefore, if the infaunal production causes differential sub-surface enrichment. The results showed that a “shallow” (0–5 cm) infaunal contribution is able to explain much of the sub-fossil assemblage beneath the surface in the high and intermediate marsh plots. However, in the low marsh plot, the deep infaunal contribution was greatest and significantly affected the sub-fossil assemblage. Therefore, modern analogues for sea-level studies in mid-Atlantic North American marshes should include the uppermost 5 cm. The interval proposed for the high and intermediate marsh is thin enough that epifaunal species are not underrepresented and encompasses only ~8 years (based on burial rates) providing a high temporal resolution. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages belonging to a mixed carbonate–siliciclastic shelf succession of the Oxfordian (Upper Jurassic) in the Prebetic, southern Spain, were analyzed. The faunal data, obtained on thin sections of strongly lithified sediments, allowed the detailed differentiation of a foraminiferal morphogroups system to be applied to the interpretation of paleoenvironmental conditions. Eleven morphogroups were differentiated according to shell composition, general morphology, number of chambers and mode of coiling. Paleoenvironmental analysis combines these features with inferred life-style (epifaunal, shallow infaunal and deep infaunal) and feeding strategy (suspension-feeder, deposit-feeder, herbivores, etc.) of the foraminifera. Analogies and differences regarding previously established morphogroup systems could be outlined accordingly.

In the Prebetic Oxfordian, distribution trends of foraminiferal morphogroups allow for a comparison of mid to outer shelf environments occupying the South-Iberian paleomargin, indicating that nutrient supply was the most important factor controlling morphogroup development. The mid shelf settings are dominated by epifaunal active herbivores–phytodetritivores, in shallow to deep substrate position of the redox boundary. The outer shelf is dominated by agglutinated and infaunal detritivore-bacterial scavenger morphogroups revealing a deep substrate position of the redox boundary. Particularly favorable trophic conditions in mid shelf environments are related with higher phytodetritus input from more proximal and shallower shelf areas.  相似文献

Hearing loss (HL) is a common disorder with mitochondrial dysfunction as one of the major causes leading to deafness. Mitochondrial dysfunction may be caused by either mutations in nuclear genes leading to defective nuclear-encoded proteins or mutations in mitochondrial genes leading to defective mitochondrial-encoded products. The specific nuclear genes involved in HL can be classified into two categories depending on whether mitochondrial gene mutations co-exist (modifier genes) or not (deafness-causing genes). TFB1M, MTO1, GTPBP3, and TRMU are modifier genes. A mutation in any of these modifier genes may lead to a deafness phenotype when accompanied by the mitochondrial gene mutation. OPA1, TIMM8A, SMAC/DIABLO, MPV17, PDSS1, BCS1L, SUCLA2, C10ORF2, COX10, PLOG1and RRM2B are deafness-causing genes. A mutation in any of these deafness-causing genes will directly induce variable phenotypic HL.  相似文献

The feeding and ranging behaviors of mangabeys,Cercocebus torquatus torquatus Kerr (1792), were studied over two periods for a total of 15 months in south-western Cameroon between 1983 and 1986. The mangabeys showed stable food acquisition, mainly of fruits produced by canopy trees. Their ranging area, especially the core area, shifted seasonally. The fruiting trees revealed a clumped distribution in space, and provided a fluctuating food resource for frugivores, including the mangabeys. The core area of the mangabeys possibly shifted due to the spatial distribution of fruiting trees, their highest ranking food items. Mangabeys are well adapted to such a fluctuating food distribution, regulating their ranging behaviors to ensure stable food acquisition.  相似文献

Ewens' sampling formula, the probability distribution of a configuration of alleles in a sample of genes under the infinitely-many-alleles model of mutation, is proved by a direct combinatorial argument. The distribution is extended to a model where the population size may vary back in time. The distribution of age-ordered frequencies in the population is also derived in the model, extending the GEM distribution of age-ordered frequencies in a model with a constant-sized population. The genealogy of a rare allele is studied using a combinatorial approach. A connection is explored between the distribution of age-ordered frequencies and ladder indices and heights in a sequence of random variables. In a sample of n genes the connection is with ladder heights and indices in a sequence of draws from an urn containing balls labelled 1,2,...,n; and in the population the connection is with ladder heights and indices in a sequence of independent uniform random variables.  相似文献

Comparative analyses of interspecific differences in response to climate change can provide important insights into the factors initiating seasonal onset of reproduction in various species and subsequent fitness consequences. We present a comparative analysis based on a 30-year breeding survey of two related migratory songbird species [Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus (RW) and Great Reed Warbler A. arundinaceus (GRW)], which coexist in reedbeds by means of various interspecific interactions. The RW advanced breeding by 15 days and shortened its breeding time window, which is a combined effect of higher temperatures, alleviated competition as a consequence of population declines in the dominant GRW, and reduced RW population. Although the breeding period of GRW changed only slightly, its clutch initiation was likewise related to temperature. Most probably, advanced breeding in RW is favoured by changes in food supply and accelerated reed growth, which provides the necessary nest concealment earlier, whereas this does not affect the GRW, a species less vulnerable to nest predation. Clutch size decreased later in the season, so that earlier breeding produced a net increase in both species. An additional increase of clutch size in GRW can be explained by the use of higher-quality territories in today’s smaller population. The main causes of nest losses were predation in RW and adverse weather in GRW, but reproductive success increased over the study period in both species, which was a consequence of larger clutches in RW, but of favourable weather during rearing and fewer total losses in GRW. Our results document that different causal mechanisms are involved in the reproductive changes of the two congeneric species living in the same habitat: RW breeding earlier by making use of competitive release and other ecological improvements, and GRW by benefiting from better rearing conditions. As species respond differentially to climate change depending on ecosystem and biotic interactions, predictions of population dynamics will remain vague until the specific response mechanisms have been elucidated.  相似文献

Transport ATPases can be lumped into four distinct types, P, F, V, and ABC, with the first three designated 20 years ago (Pedersen, P.L. and Carafoli, E., Trends Biochem. Sci. 12, 146–150, 1987) and the ABC type included more recently. The mini-reviews (>20) that comprise this volume of the Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes describe work presented at the 2007 FASEB Conference (6th) on Transport ATPases (Kathleen Sweadner, Chair; Rajini Rao, Co-Chair). Since these conferences began in 1997, the “transport ATPase field” has seen tremendous progress. Advances include a much better understanding of the structure, mechanism, and regulation of each of the four major ATPase types as well as their physiological and medical relevance. In fact, the transport ATPase field has entered a new era in which work on these enzymes is likely to contribute to new therapies for multiple diseases that affect both people and animals. Among these are cancer and heart disease, mitochondrial diseases, osteoporosis, macromolecular degeneration, immune deficiency, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, ulcers, nephro-toxicity, hearing loss, skin disorders, lupus, and malaria. In addition, as several members of the transport ATPase family include those involved in drug resistance their study may help alleviate this recurring problem in drug development. Finally, the transport ATPase field is also paving the way for nanotechnology focused on nano-motors with work on the F-type ATPases (F0F1) leading the way. These ATPases driven in reverse by a proton gradient have the capacity to interconvert electrochemical energy into mechanical energy and finally into chemical energy conserved in the terminal bond of ATP. In mammalian mitochondria these events occur on a larger complex or “nano-machine” called the “ATP synthasome” that consists of the ATP synthase in complex formation with carriers for Pi and ADP/ATP.  相似文献

Even though the Indo-Malay Archipelago hosts the world's greatest diversity of marine species, studies on the genetic population structure and gene flow of marine organisms within this area are rather rare. Consequently, not much is known about connectivity of marine populations in the Indo-Malay Archipelago, despite the fact that such information is important to understand evolutionary and ecological processes in the centre of marine biodiversity. This study aims to investigate the genetic population structure of the boring giant clam, Tridacna crocea . The analysis is based on a 456-bp fragment of the cytochrome oxidase I gene from 300 individuals collected from 15 localities across the Indo-Malay Archipelago. Tridacna crocea shows a very strong genetic population structure and isolation by distance, indicating restricted gene flow between almost all sample sites. The observed ΦST-value of 0.28 is very high compared to other studies on giant clams. According to the pronounced genetic differences, the sample sites can be divided into four groups from West to East: (i) Eastern Indian Ocean, (ii) Java Sea, (iii) South China Sea, Indonesian throughflow, as well as seas in the East of Sulawesi, and (iv) Western Pacific. This complex genetic population structure and pattern of connectivity, characterised by restricted gene flow between some sites and panmixing between others can be attributed to the geological history and prevailing current regimes in the Indo-Malay Archipelago.  相似文献

Small populations may suffer more severe pollen limitation and result in Allee effects. Sex ratio may also affect pollination and reproduction success in dioecious species, which is always overlooked when performing conservation and reintroduction tasks. In this study, we investigated whether and how population size and sex ratio affected pollen limitation and reproduction in the endangered Ottelia acuminata, a dioecious submerged species. We established experimental plots with increasing population size and male sex ratio. We observed insect visitation, estimated pollen limitation by hand‐pollinations and counted fruit set and seed production per fruit. Fruit set and seed production decreased significantly in small populations due to pollinator scarcity and thus suffered more severe pollen limitation. Although frequently visited, female‐biased larger populations also suffered severe pollen limitation due to few effective visits and insufficient pollen availability. Rising male ratio enhanced pollination service and hence reproduction. Unexpectedly, pollinator preferences did not cause reduced reproduction in male‐biased populations because of high pollen availability. However, reproductive outputs showed more variability in severe male‐biased populations. Our results revealed two component Allee effects in fruit set and seed production, mediated by pollen limitation in O. acuminata. Moreover, reproduction decreased significantly in larger female‐biased populations, increasing the risk of an Allee effect.  相似文献
