The taste responsiveness of six squirrel monkeys, five pigtail macaques, four olive baboons and four spider monkeys to monsodium glutamate (MSG) and to sodium chloride was assessed in two-bottle preference tests of brief duration (2 min). When given the choice between tap water and defined concentrations of the two tastants dissolved in tap water, the animals were found to significantly discriminate concentrations of MSG as low as 2 mM (spider monkeys and olive baboons), 50 mM (pigtail macaques) and 300 mM (squirrel monkeys) from the solvent. With sodium chloride, taste preference thresholds were found to be 1 mM (spider monkeys), 20 mM (pigtail macaques), 50 mM (olive baboons), and 200 mM (squirrel monkeys), respectively. Across-species comparisons of the degree of preference for MSG and sodium chloride displayed by the four primate species showed the same order of spider monkeys>olive baboons>pigtail macaques>squirrel monkeys. When presented with equimolar concentrations of different tastants, all four species preferred sucrose as well as a mixture of sucrose and sodium chloride over MSG, and--at least at one concentration--they preferred MSG over sodium chloride. The results support the assertion that the taste responsiveness of the four primate species to MSG and sodium chloride might reflect an evolutionary adaptation to their respective dietary habits.  相似文献

Hemolytic serum complement activity was quantitatively compared in baboons, squirrel monkeys, cebus monkeys, and cotton-top marmosets. Squirrel monkeys showed the highest activity, and marmosets had the lowest activity. The complement level in squirrel monkeys and tenfold greater than marmosets and almost four times higher than that of man. Cebus monkeys had levels most similar to that of man while the baboon exhibited activity almost as low as that of the marmoset.  相似文献

Hepatitis A and B: serologic survey of human and nonhuman primate sera   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Sera of humans and seven species of nonhuman primates were tested by radioimmunoassay and enzyme immunoassay for the presence of hepatitis A antibody, hepatitis B surface antigen and antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen. The outcome of testing a total of 276 serum or plasma specimens was as follows: with the exception of squirrel monkeys (0%) and cotton-top marmosets (0%), a considerable percentage of all other species tested had detectable antibodies to hepatitis A virus: humans 45.9%, chimpanzees 36.6%, baboons 38.2%, vervets 57.9%, cebus monkeys 40.0% and common marmosets 50.0%. Only one human and two chimpanzees were carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen. Antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen were detected in human (11.3%), chimpanzees (29.9%), baboons (36.2%) and squirrel monkeys (5%). Chimpanzees showed an increasing prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis A virus and hepatitis B surface antigen with age.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of adrenergic terminals to the anterior eye segment of humans, Cynomolgue monkeys, squirrel monkeys, owl monkeys, Cebus monkeys, vervets, tamarins, and baboons has been investigated. The cornea is normally devoid of adrenergic terminals, except in a plexus near the limbus. The trabecular meshwork contains varying numbers of adrenergic terminals: usually none in Cynomolgus monkeys, patas monkeys, vervets, and humans, although fibres have very rarely been observed in Cynomolgus monkeys, vervets, and humans; a few in owl monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and tamarins; and moderate numbers in Cebus monkeys and baboons. From the evidence, however, it seems premature to presume an adrenergic innervation of the trabecular mechanism regulating the outflow resistance. The dilatator pupillae is regularly supplied with numerous adrenergic terminals and in the iris stroma there is probably an adrenergic innervation of the melanophores. The sphincter pupillae regularly contains adrenergic terminals with notable species differences; most fibres occur in baboons and fewest in humans, with the remaining species forming a middle class. The ciliary processes in all species contain a moderate number of adrenergic terminals, presumably primarily associated with the epithelium. Intraepithelial adrenergic terminals have been observed on the pars plana of the ciliary body of humans, Cebus monkeys, vervets, baboons, and patas monkeys. The ciliary muscle of baboons and Cynomolgus monkeys contains numerous adrenergic terminals. Moderate numbers occur in Cebus monkeys and vervets, and still less in (in falling order) tamarins, squirrel monkeys, humans, and patas monkeys.  相似文献

Early behavioral development in capuchins (Cebus)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Capuchin infants (genus Cebus) are born in a behaviorally more altricial state than is known for infants of other primate taxa except apes. Development in the first 2 months after birth is characterized by the major reorganization of sleeping and waking, assumption of postural control and the appearance of prehension. Capuchins develop postural control, prehension and locomotion later than do squirrel monkeys, baboons or macaques, presenting a pattern of motor development intermediate between these relatively more precocial genera and apes. Capuchins provide a useful model primate system in which to study development and its links with behavioral variability and life history.  相似文献

Gamma-herpesviruses can be found in most primates including Old World an New World monkeys. The gamma-herpesvirinae are grouped into two classes: lymphocryptoviruses (gamma1) and rhadinoviruses (gamma2). The lymphocryptoviruses include Epstein-Barr virus, lymphocryptovirus of rhesus monkeys, and Herpesvirus papio of baboons. Rhadinoviruses that infect New World monkeys include Herpesvirus saimiri, whose natural host is the squirrel monkey, and Herpesvirus ateles, which infects spider monkeys. Rhadinoviruses that infect hominoids and Old World monkeys include Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, also known as HHV-8, and rhesus monkey rhadinovirus.  相似文献

A population of about 200 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) living in a seminatural environment at the Monkey Jungle in Goulds, Florida, were studied to determine the composition of the population and the basic pattern of its social structure. The social associations of 95 tagged individuals were recorded over a period of three years to determine the basic social organization of the population. The monkeys lived in one group of male juveniles and three female-centered groups with peripheral male subgroups. In spite of the homogeneity of the environment, the groups utilized different foraging strategies which was reflected in differences in the mean weight of adult females. Although females changed subgroup affiliation, they remained within the same large group. Males, however, rarely changed subgroups, but the subgroups frequently changed their group affiliation.  相似文献

Abstract Background Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a neoplastic proliferation of epithelial cells undergoing squamous differentiation and represents a diagnostic challenge in non‐human primates (NHP), especially in baboons with perineal SCC. Methods Fourteen SCC (13 baboons, 1 spider monkey) were identified over a 20‐year period. A literature search identified 86 additional published cases of spontaneous NHP SCC. Results Squamous cell carcinoma was most commonly reported in macaques, baboons, marmosets, and squirrel monkeys. Metastasis occurred in 23%, of NHP. The most frequently reported primary locations were the oral cavity, integument, esophagus, and cervix‐uterus. Perineal SCC occurred mainly in baboons. All reported SCC in marmosets occurred in the head. Nasal cavity SCC was only reported in male marmosets. All reported pulmonary SCC occurred in males, mostly in tree shrews. Conclusions Squamous cell carcinoma is a common neoplasm in NHP and exhibits species differences. NHPs may provide a useful SCC animal model.  相似文献

The anthropoid primate placenta appears to be unique in producing corticotropin‐releasing hormone (CRH). Placental CRH is involved in an endocrine circuit key to the production of estrogens during pregnancy. CRH induces cortisol production by the maternal and fetal adrenal glands, leading to further placental CRH production. CRH also stimulates the fetal adrenal glands to produce dehydroepiandrostendione sulfate (DHEAS), which the placenta converts into estrogens. There are at least two patterns of maternal circulating CRH across gestation among anthropoids. Monkeys examined to date (Papio and Callithrix) have an early‐to‐mid gestational peak of circulating CRH, followed by a steady decline to a plateau level, with a possible rise near parturition. In contrast, humans and great apes have an exponential rise in circulating CRH peaking at parturition. To further document and compare patterns of maternal circulating CRH in anthropoid primates, we collected monthly blood samples from 14 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) and ten owl monkeys (Aotus nancymaae) during pregnancy. CRH immunoreactivity was measured from extracted plasma by using solid‐phase radioimmunoassay. Both squirrel and owl monkeys displayed a mid‐gestational peak in circulating CRH: days 45–65 of the 152‐day gestation for squirrel monkeys (mean±SEM CRH=2,694±276 pg/ml) and days 60–80 of the 133‐day gestation for owl monkeys (9,871±974 pg/ml). In squirrel monkeys, circulating CRH declined to 36% of mean peak value by 2 weeks before parturition and then appeared to increase; the best model for circulating CRH over gestation in squirrel monkeys was a cubic function, similar to previous results for baboons and marmosets. In owl monkeys, circulating CRH appeared to reach plateau with no subsequent significant decline approaching parturition, although a cubic function was the best fit. This study provides additional evidence for a mid‐gestational peak of maternal circulating CRH in ancestral anthropoids that has been lost in the hominoid lineage. Am. J. The Bolivian squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis) is a seasonal breeder. Male squirrel monkeys show distinct morphological and behavioral changes prior to and during the breeding season. A “fatting syndrome” includes increased body weight, increased levels of androgens, and in the Bolivian subspecies, an increasingly active role in the social organization of the group. In this study, the behavior of ten adult male Bolivian squirrel monkeys was analyzed over a 6-month period prior to, during, and after the breeding season. Each was housed as the only adult male in a breeding unit with six to ten adult females and one juvenile male. Employing a principle components method, 11 behavioral clusters were generated from 27 responses. Their activity clusters were identified as follows: sexual activity that showed a peak around the time of peak conceptions; excitatory activity that was initially high but decreased throughout the breeding season; and maintenance activity that did not change across the breeding season. The changing social behavior of the male squirrel monkey parallels physiological changes and is correlated with changing androgen levels.  相似文献

Cholesterol metabolism in rhesus monkey, squirrel monkey, and baboon   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The metabolism of cholesterol was studied in baboons, rhesus monkeys, and squirrel monkeys while they were being fed either a low fat, low cholesterol (basal) diet or the basal diet supplemented with saturated fat and cholesterol (atherogenic diet). When the diet was changed from basal to atherogenic, the mean total serum cholesterol concentration increased from 70 to 180 mg/dl in the baboon, from 168 to 283 mg/dl in the squirrel monkey, and from 144 to 608 mg/dl in the rhesus monkey. In animals fed the atherogenic diet, the percentage of dietary cholesterol absorbed was greatest in the rhesus monkey and least in the baboon. The fraction of the total body pool of cholesterol that was derived from the diet was greatest in the squirrel monkey and least in the baboon. The turnover of the body pool of cholesterol was several times faster in the squirrel monkey than in the baboon or the rhesus monkey when either dict was fed. The mean total fecal excretion of endogenous cholesterol and bile acid increased in all species on transition to the atherogenic diet; however, the relative contributions of the neutral and acidic fractions to the increase in total excretion differed among species. The difference in percentage of dietary cholesterol absorbed may, in part, account for the large differences in serum cholesterol during the atherogenic diet period. Comparison with other published results indicates that of these species cholesterol metabolism in the baboon is most like that in the human.  相似文献

The structure and cytoarchitectonics of mesenterial lymph nodes were studied in thin histological sections by different methods. Under study were 5 rhesus monkeys and 3 hamadryas baboons. The square surface of different structural elements of the nodes (the cortical and medullary substances, follicles, the connective tissue framework, sinuses) occupied by them in sections was calculated and the amount of cellular elements was determined (%). Comparison of the data obtained in rhesus monkeys and baboons speaks of certain species-specific features of the organs under study. The morphological picture of lymph node sections in baboons (as compared with rhesus monkeys) might suggest earlier ageing of nodes in baboons.  相似文献

Tonic immobility and several accompanying behavioral changes were examined in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus). It was found that either the occurrence of a loud noise immediately before induction or the presence of a stuffed Cooper's hawk increased the duration of immobility in some subjects. Subspecies differences in durations of immobility were also found. The number of inductions required to produce immobility in squirrel monkeys were unusually large, and were negatively correlated with duration of the response. Behavioral variables accompanying tonic immobility showed qualitative differences when compared to what is known concerning their relation to immobility in other species. The findings support the belief that tonic immobility evolved as a predator defense in squirrel monkeys or one of their ancestors, but suggest that it no longer plays an active role in their survival.  相似文献

Adult male and female squirrel monkeys were tested in nonsocial adaptation and pairwise and triad social situations differing in sex composition. Social behaviors, nonsocial behaviors, and dominance hierarchies were observed during social testing. Dominance hierarchies were similar in groups differing in size and social structure. Nonsocial behaviors decreased in females and submissive animals paired with males or dominant monkeys. Aggressiveness between females decreased and the beginnings of coalitions between females were observed in the presence of a male. The social behavior patterns, but not dominance hierarchies, are consistent with behaviors observed in larger groups of squirrel monkeys.  相似文献

The analgesic efficacy of the kappa-opioid benzodiazepine, tifluadom, was examined in squirrel monkeys using electric shock titration and tail-immersion procedures. Tifluadom produced dose-dependent increases in the shock intensity that maintained responding under the shock titration schedule without substantially decreasing response rates. Tifluadom also increased the latency of tail-withdrawal from 55 degrees C water. Naloxone attenuated tifluadom's effects under both procedures. These results extend previous reports of tifluadom's analgesic characteristics and suggest that the tail-immersion procedure is a useful analgesic assay in squirrel monkeys.  相似文献

Histological sections of the thymus were studied morphometrically in 5 rhesus monkeys and 3 hamadryas baboons. The ratio of square surfaces of the cortical and cerebral substance, the percentage of Hassall's corpuscles and cellular elements (lymphocytes, stromal elements, blasts etc.) were established in the organ. Individual and species peculiarities of the structure of thymus elements were found. Less amount of parenchyma and growth of the stroma in baboons and a greater mitotic complex in rhesus monkeys show more pronounced involution processes in baboons.  相似文献

Using a behavioral paradigm designed to simulate olfactory-guidedforaging, the ability of five squirrel monkeys to distinguishiso-amyl acetate from n-and iso-forms of other acetic esters(ethyl acetate to decyl acetate) and from other esters carryingthe iso-amyl group (iso-amyl propionate to iso-amyl capronate)was investigated. We found (i) that all five animals were clearlyable to discriminate between all odor pairs tested; (ii) a significantnegative correlation between discrimination performance andstructural similarity of odorants in terms of differences incarbon chain length of both the aliphatic alcohol group andthe aliphatic acid group of the esters; and (iii) that iso-and n-amyl acetate were perceived as qualitatively similar despitedifferent steric conformation. Using a triple-forced choiceprocedure, 20 human subjects were tested on the same tasks inparallel and showed a very similar pattern of discriminationperformance compared with the squirrel monkeys. Thus, the resultsof this study provide evidence of well-developed olfactory discriminationability in squirrel monkeys for aliphatic esters and supportthe assumption that human and non-human primates may share commonprinciples of odor quality perception. Alarm calls can code for different classes of predators or different types of predatory threat. Acoustic information can also encode the urgency of threat through variations in acoustic features within specific alarm call types. Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) produce an alarm call, known as the alarm peep, in highly threatening situations. Infant squirrel monkeys appear to have an innate predisposition to respond to alarm peeps but require experience to associate alarm peeps with the appropriate type of predatory threat [Herzog & Hopf, American Journal of Primatology 7:99-106, 1984]. Little is known about age-related differences in the type or frequency of response to alarm peeps, or the development of alarm peep response in infants. The purpose of this study was to test experimentally the response strategies of different age classes of squirrel monkey to the playback of alarm peeps that were produced by infants, juveniles, or adults. Results suggest that infants, juveniles, and female subadults respond more frequently to alarm peeps than do adult females. Infant squirrel monkeys showed different behavioral strategies in response to alarm peeps as a function of age. Adult females differentiate between infant and adult alarm peeps by responding more frequently to the alarm peeps of adult females. These data demonstrate that squirrel monkeys use acoustic information to discern when to respond to the alarm peeps from conspecifics, and that infants gradually develop an adult-like response to alarm peeps over the first year of development.  相似文献

Normative values were obtained for triiodothyronine and thyroxine from four species of Old World primate (chimpanzees, rhesus monkeys, African green monkeys and talopoin monkeys) and a single species of New World primate (squirrel monkeys) represented by two subspecies, Colombian and Bolivian. The Bolivian squirrel monkeys exhibited the lowest values for both triiodothyronine and thyroxine. Male talapoins had the highest levels of thyroxine. Significant differences were found in levels of triiodothyronine and thyroxine between males and females of the same species and between the two subspecies of squirrel monkeys. Triiodothyronine:thryroxine ratios were consistently lower in the males of all species examined.  相似文献

New World squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.) have high circulating cortisol levels but normal electrolytes and blood pressures. The goal of the present study was to gain insight into adaptive mechanisms used by Bolivian squirrel monkeys to minimize the effects of high cortisol on mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) activity and electrolyte and water balance. Aldosterone levels in serum from 10 squirrel monkeys were 17.7 +/- 3.4 ng/dl (normal range in humans, 4 to 31 ng/dl), suggesting that squirrel monkeys do not exhibit a compensatory increase in aldosterone. The squirrel monkey MR was cloned and expressed in COS-7 cells and found to have similar responsiveness to cortisol and aldosterone as human MR, suggesting that squirrel monkey MR is not inherently less responsive to cortisol. To determine whether altered metabolism of cortisol might contribute to MR protection in squirrel monkeys, serum and urinary cortisol and cortisone were measured, and a comprehensive urinary corticosteroid metabolite profile was performed in samples from anesthetized and awake squirrel monkeys. The levels of cortisone exceeded those of cortisol in serum and urine, suggesting increased peripheral 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 activity in squirrel monkeys. In addition, a significant fraction (approximately 20%) of total corticosteroids excreted in the urine of squirrel monkeys appeared as 6beta-hydroxycortisol, compared with that in man (1%). Therefore, changes in cortisol metabolism likely contribute to adaptive mechanisms used by Bolivian squirrel monkeys to minimize effects of high cortisol.  相似文献
