Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems have poorly developed soils and currently experience one of the greatest rates of climate warming on the globe. We investigated the responsiveness of organic matter decomposition in Maritime Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems to climate change, using two study sites in the Antarctic Peninsula region (Anchorage Island, 67°S; Signy Island, 61°S), and contrasted the responses found with those at the cool temperate Falkland Islands (52°S). Our approach consisted of two complementary methods: (1) Laboratory measurements of decomposition at different temperatures (2, 6 and 10 °C) of plant material and soil organic matter from all three locations. (2) Field measurements at all three locations on the decomposition of soil organic matter, plant material and cellulose, both under natural conditions and under experimental warming (about 0.8 °C) achieved using open top chambers. Higher temperatures led to higher organic matter breakdown in the laboratory studies, indicating that decomposition in Maritime Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems is likely to increase with increasing soil temperatures. However, both laboratory and field studies showed that decomposition was more strongly influenced by local substratum characteristics (especially soil N availability) and plant functional type composition than by large-scale temperature differences. The very small responsiveness of organic matter decomposition in the field (experimental temperature increase < 1 °C) compared with the laboratory (experimental increases of 4 or 8 °C) shows that substantial warming is required before significant effects can be detected.  相似文献

Water samples from a range of fresh-water Antarctic lakes on Signy Island (South Orkney Islands: 60°45′S, 45 °38′W) were examined for the presence of virus-like particles (VLPs) during the 1998/1999 field season. It was discovered that VLPs were ubiquitous, morphologically diverse and abundant, with high concentrations ranging from 4.9 × 106 ml−1 to 3.1 × 107 ml−1. Likely hosts include bacteria, cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae. In addition, an unusually large virus morphotype was observed with a head diameter 370 × 330 nm and a tail 1.3 μm long. Samples of an angiosperm species, nine lichen species and a terrestrial alga, were collected from a variety of Antarctic terrestrial habitats, and were analysed for C and N stable isotope composition. Collections were made along natural gradients, the marine gradient, running from the sea coast inland and the moisture gradient, determined by melt water and precipitation runoff, and running towards the sea coast. Considerable variation in stable isotope ratios was found; δ13C values ranged between −16 and −32‰ and δ15N values between −23 and +23‰ The variation in stable carbon isotope ratios could be attributed in part to species specific differences, but differences in water availability also played a role, as was shown for the terrestrial alga Prasiola crispa and the lichen species Usnea antarctica. The differences in the isotope ratios of nitrogen could be retraced to the origin of nitrogen: marine or terrestrial. The nitrogen stable isotope ratios were influenced by both the marine gradient from the sea inland and the melt water and precipitation flow running in the opposite direction, towards the sea. This was shown for the lichen species Turgidosculum complicatulum and the angiosperm species Deschampsia antarctica. The variation in the C and N stable isotope ratios can be used to determine sources and pathways of N and changes in the water availability in Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems. Contrary to earlier reports the use of stable N isotope ratios is possible in this case because of the relative simplicity of the structure of the Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems.  相似文献

Antarctica is the continent least affected by invasive species, but climate change and increasing human activity are increasing this threat. Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems generally have low biodiversity with simple community structures and little competition for resources. Consequently, species with pre-adaptations or capabilities that allow them to tolerate polar conditions may have disproportionately large ecosystem impacts when introduced to Antarctica compared with other regions of the Earth. Here we investigate the invasion risk associated with the flightless chironomid midge, Eretmoptera murphyi, which was accidentally introduced from South Georgia (54°S) to Signy Island, South Orkney Islands (61°S), probably during plant transplantation experiments in the 1960s. Larval size class distribution analysis indicated that E. murphyi has a 2 year life cycle on Signy Island, supporting previous suggestions. Estimates of litter turnover show that recent large increases in E. murphyi population density and extent are likely to increase nutrient cycling rates on Signy Island substantially. Existing physiological adaptations may allow E. murphyi to colonise higher latitude locations. Growth rate and microhabitat climatic modelling show that temperature constraints on larval development on Anchorage Island (68°S) are theoretically similar to those on Signy Island even though it is ~750 km further south. Establishment of this non-native midge at climatically similar intervening locations along the western Antarctic Peninsula is therefore plausible. Currently, lack of effective natural dispersal mechanisms is probably limiting the spread of the midge. However, dispersal to other areas of the Antarctic Peninsula may occur via human-assisted transportation, highlighting the importance of appropriate biosecurity measures.  相似文献

Soil microorganisms, the central drivers of terrestrial Antarctic ecosystems, are being confronted with increasing temperatures as parts of the continent experience considerable warming. Here we determined short‐term temperature dependencies of Antarctic soil bacterial community growth rates, using the leucine incorporation technique, in order to predict future changes in temperature sensitivity of resident soil bacterial communities. Soil samples were collected along a climate gradient consisting of locations on the Antarctic Peninsula (Anchorage Island, 67 °34′S, 68 °08′W), Signy Island (60 °43′S, 45 °38′W) and the Falkland Islands (51 °76′S 59 °03′W). At each location, experimental plots were subjected to warming by open top chambers (OTCs) and paired with control plots on vegetated and fell‐field habitats. The bacterial communities were adapted to the mean annual temperature of their environment, as shown by a significant correlation between the mean annual soil temperature and the minimum temperature for bacterial growth (Tmin). Every 1 °C rise in soil temperature was estimated to increase Tmin by 0.24–0.38 °C. The optimum temperature for bacterial growth varied less and did not have as clear a relationship with soil temperature. Temperature sensitivity, indicated by Q10 values, increased with mean annual soil temperature, suggesting that bacterial communities from colder regions were less temperature sensitive than those from the warmer regions. The OTC warming (generally <1 °C temperature increases) over 3 years had no effects on temperature relationship of the soil bacterial community. We estimate that the predicted temperature increase of 2.6 °C for the Antarctic Peninsula would increase Tmin by 0.6–1 °C and Q10 (0–10 °C) by 0.5 units.  相似文献

Summary The mineral nitrogen (NH4-N + NO3-N) in precipitation occurring at continental and maritime Antarctic sites has been determined. Precipitation at sites remote from animal activity contained much less mineral N than that occurring at sites influenced by such activity. Estimates for nitrogen input at two contrasting fellfield sites, one at continental Cape Bird (dry site), the other at maritime Signy Island (wet site) are presented. At both sites precipitation N represented the major N input to fellfield biota than did wind blown particulate matter containing organic nitrogen or ammonia volatilized from adjacent guano soils and becoming absorbed by moist artificial soils traps.  相似文献

We report abundance of 13C and 15N contents in terrestrial plants (mosses, lichens, liverworts, algae and grasses) from the area of Barton Peninsula (King George Island, maritime Antarctic). The investigated plants show a wide range of δ13C and δ15N values between −29.0 and −20.0‰ and between −15.3 and 22.8‰, respectively. The King George Island terrestrial plants show species specificity of both carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions, probably due to differences in plant physiology and biochemistry, related to their sources and in part to water availability. Carbon isotope compositions of Antarctic terrestrial plants are typical of the C3 photosynthetic pathway. Lichens are characterized by the widest carbon isotope range, from −29.0 to −20.0‰. However, the average δ13C value of lichens is the highest (−23.6 ± 2.8‰) among King George Island plants, followed by grasses (−25.6 ± 1.7‰), mosses (−25.9 ± 1.6‰), liverworts (−26.3 ± 0.5‰) and algae (−26.3 ± 1.2‰), partly related to habitats controlled by water availability. The δ15N values of moss samples range widest (−9.0 to 22.8‰, with an average of 4.6 ± 6.6‰). Lichens are on the average most depleted in 15N (mean = −7.4 ± 6.4‰), whereas algae are most enriched in 15N (10.0 ± 3.3‰). The broad range of nitrogen isotope compositions suggest that the N source for these Antarctic terrestrial plants is spatially much variable, with the local presence of seabird colonies being particularly significant.  相似文献

Although soil-borne bacteria represent the world's greatest source of biological diversity, it is not well understood whether extreme environmental conditions, such as those found in Antarctic habitats, result in reduced soil-borne microbial diversity. To address this issue, patterns of bacterial diversity were studied in soils sampled along a > 3200 km southern polar transect spanning a gradient of increased climate severity over 27 degrees of latitude. Vegetated and fell-field plots were sampled at the Falkland (51 degrees S), South Georgia (54 degrees S), Signy (60 degrees S) and Anchorage Islands (67 degrees S), while bare frost-sorted soil polygons were examined at Fossil Bluff (71 degrees S), Mars Oasis (72 degrees S), Coal Nunatak (72 degrees S) and the Ellsworth Mountains (78 degrees S). Bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences were recovered subsequent to direct DNA extraction from soil, polymerase chain reaction amplification and cloning. Although bacterial diversity was observed to decline with increased latitude, habitat-specific patterns appeared to also be important. Namely, a negative relationship was found between bacterial diversity and latitude for fell-field soils, but no such pattern was observed for vegetated sites. The Mars Oasis site, previously identified as a biodiversity hotspot within this region, proved exceptional within the study transect, with unusually high bacterial diversity. In independent analyses, geographical distance and vegetation cover were found to significantly influence bacterial community composition. These results provide insight into the factors shaping the composition of bacterial communities in Antarctic terrestrial habitats and support the notion that bacterial diversity declines with increased climatic severity.  相似文献

Hybridisation between South polar skua (C. maccormicki) and Brown skua (C. antarctica lonnbergi) in the area of the Antarctic Peninsula is known at least since the beginning of the last century but no survey has been done so far. This paper reviews information on the species composition of skua colonies of more than 10 pairs in the Antarctic Peninsula region, and the incidence of mixed pairs. Morphometrics, population size and breeding success were examined in detail at King George Island. The northward distribution of South polar skuas extended to King George Island (62°11′ S 59°00′ W), with a small outlying population on Signy Island (60°45′ S 45°36′ W), whereas Brown skuas did not breed further south than Anvers Island archipelago (64°46′ S 64°03′ W). The proportion of mixed pairs was highest at the northern end of the ∼500-km-wide hybrid zone. Body size distribution of sympatric skuas from King George Island is clearly bimodal but overlaps considerably and hybrids cannot be identified. Skua population sizes at Potter Peninsula/King George Island remained stable between 1994 and 2004. Numbers of mixed breeding pairs fluctuated more strongly than those of pure species pairs. Breeding success of Brown skuas varied the least.  相似文献

Various studies over the last 15 years have attempted to describe the processes of N retention, saturation and NO3 leaching in semi-natural ecosystems based on stable isotope studies. Forest ecologists and terrestrial biogeochemists have used 15N labelled NO3 and NH4 + tracers to determine the fate of atmospheric deposition inputs of N to terrestrial ecosystems, with NO3 leaching to surface waters being a key output flux. Separate studies by aquatic ecologists have used similar isotope tracer methods to determine the fate and impacts of inorganic N species, leached from terrestrial ecosystems, on aquatic ecosystems, usually without reference to comparable terrestrial studies. A third group of isotopic studies has employed natural abundances of 15N and 18O in precipitation and surface water NO3 to determine the relative contributions of atmospheric and microbial sources. These three sets of results often appear to conflict with one another. Here we attempt to synthesize and reconcile the results of these differing approaches to identifying both the source and the fate of inorganic N in natural or semi-natural ecosystems, and identify future research priorities. We conclude that the results of different studies conform to a consistent conceptual model comprising: (1) rapid microbial turnover of atmospherically deposited NO3 at multiple biologically active locations within both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems; (2) maximum retention and accumulation of N in carbon-rich ecosystems and (3) maximum leaching of NO3 , most of which has been microbially cycled, from carbon-poor ecosystems exposed to elevated atmospheric N inputs.  相似文献

The light-mantled sooty albatross is a medium-sized albatross with a circumpolar distribution in the Southern Ocean. The known breeding sites are restricted to Islands in sub-Antarctic latitudes close to the Antarctic convergence between 46° and 53°S. In the austral summer season 2008/2009 we discovered a new breeding colony with at least two confirmed and three probable nests at Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica (62°12′S, 59°01′W). The new breeding colony of light-mantled sooty albatross described here represents the southernmost breeding place of any albatross species ever recorded.  相似文献

Patches of common juniper (Juniperus communis L.) shrubs potentially facilitate the formation of fertile islands in heath tundra ecosystems thereby influencing the long-term resilience of these ecosystems. Although the role of juniper in the formation of such ‘islands of fertility’ has been studied in semiarid landscapes, there has been little attention paid to the importance of juniper in other ecosystems. In this study we contrast the soil fertility and rates of N fixation under juniper shrubs with that in open heath tundra in northern Sweden. Plots were established at several individual sites in alpine heath tundra in Northern Sweden and mineral soils to a depth of 10 cm were characterized for available N and P and total C, N, P, Ca, Mg, K, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu. Nitrogen fixation rates were measured by acetylene reduction in feather mosses under juniper canopies and contrasted with N fixation in both feather mosses and surface soils in the open heath. Soils under juniper had concentrations of total P greatly in excess of P in open heath, furthermore, juniper islands had the highest concentrations of bioavailable P. Nitrogen fixation rates in the feather moss Pleurozium schreberi (Bird.) Mitt were approximately 150 μmol acetylene reduced m−2 d−1 under the juniper canopy compared to less than 10 μmol acetylene reduced m−2 d−1 in the open heath. Feather mosses under the juniper canopy also fixed N at a significantly higher rate (on an aerial basis) than that of surface cores from the open heath that included lichen, mosses, and soil crusts. Juniper facilitates the formation of islands of soil fertility that may in turn facilitate the growth of other plants and positively influence the long term recovery of heath tundra ecosystems following disturbance.  相似文献

The McDonald Islands (53°03S, 72°36E) are situated in the southern Indian Ocean, approximately 43 km west of Heard Island. These sub-Antarctic islands comprise McDonald Island itself, measuring ca.1 × 2 km, and two much smaller rocky outcrops, Flat Island and Meyer Rock. Five species of vascular plant occur on the islands. Only four species of moss were found, no hepatics, and eight species of lichen, together with algal and fungal species. Phanerogamic vegetation, comprising grassland and cushion-carpet herbfield, covers about one-third of the main island. Elsewhere, vegetation is absent or restricted to cryptogamic species. The distribution and occurrence of vegetation are strongly influenced by salt deposition, exposure to wind, substrate stability and biotic influences, particularly the very large assemblages of sea birds. The species-depauperate McDonald Islands are unique and have suffered negligible human impact. A management plan has been prepared; its implementation will be assisted by the information in this paper. The islands' protection will be further enhanced by an affirmative final decision on the current proposal for World Heritage Listing of Heard and the McDonald Islands. Aim This paper describes the biogeographical setting of the Falkland Islands, in the context of the relationships of the islands’ biota to other sub‐Antarctic/cold temperate lands. Location The analysis focuses primarily on the Falklands biota, and explores its relationships to those of Patagonian South America and South Africa, other southern lands and the islands of the sub‐Antarctic Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Methods The study derives largely from literature sources on the biota and geological history of the Falkland Islands. Results The animals and plants known from the Falkland Islands exhibit strong affinities with those of Patagonian South America, and especially Tierra del Fuego; additional affinities are with various remote islands of the sub‐Antarctic, as well as New Zealand and to a lesser extent Australia; often these are shared with Patagonia. While the biotic affinities might be interpreted, by some, as indicating a former Gondwanan/South American geological connection of the Falklands, geological evidence points to the Falklands formerly having a land connection to south‐eastern South Africa. Only faint hints of a South African biotic connection remain. The historical biotic and geological connections of the Falklands thus conflict. Moreover, the Falklands biota is so strongly Patagonian that derivation of that biota is best seen as resulting from dispersal, much of it probably recent. This dispersal biota appears to have replaced, and perhaps displaced, the South African biota present on the islands as they detached from South Africa and drifted across the south Atlantic Ocean, as it opened up as South America and Africa drifted apart.  相似文献

The Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) programme is a seriesof bi-annual cruises between the Falkland Islands (50°S)and the UK (50°N). Measurements of the abundance of theN2-fixing, colonial cyanobacterium Trichodesmium along thistransect in the years 1995–1999 reveal that it is especiallyabundant between 0 and 15°N, but by contrast almost completelyabsent between 5 and 30°S. The cruise path between 0 and15°N lies close to 20°W, on the African (eastern) sideof the Atlantic. The maximum colony abundances we observed (  相似文献

Benthic moss pillars in Antarctic lakes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Unique pillar-like colonies of aquatic mosses, rising from cyanobacterial and algal mats, have been discovered in some freshwater lakes in the vicinity of Syowa Station (69°00′S, 39°35′E), continental Antarctica. These moss pillars are about 40 cm in diameter and up to 60 cm high and occur at the lake bottoms mainly between 3 and 5 m depth. The primary component is a species of Leptobryum, a genus unknown in the continental Antarctic terrestrial bryoflora and as an aquatic genus elsewhere in the world. Bryum pseudotriquetrum is often an associated species. In longitudinal section the pillars reveal several whitish layers formed by mineral sediment and dead cyanobacteria. It is speculated that the biomass of aquatic mosses at the bottom of many Antarctic lakes is considerably greater than that previously estimated. Accepted: 11 April 1999  相似文献

A stable nitrogen isotope analysis was used to clarify the relative importance of denitrification and nitrate uptake by plants in the nitrate reduction in a reed belt of L. Kamisagata (N 37°49′, E 138°53′, alt. 4.5 m, depth 30–80 cm, area 0.025 km2), one of about 20 sand dune lakes in Japan. A very high concentration of NO 3 -N with 19.0 ± 5.9 mg N l−1 in spring sources decreased during passage through the reed belt along two set transect lines about 120 m long in any season, whereas progressive enrichment in 15N-NO 3 in flowing water was detected. Loss rate of nitrate ranged from 38.4 to 73.1% with an average of 56.7 ± 11.6%. Enrichment factors calculated using a Rayleigh curve method ranged from −1.03 to −5.12‰. The contribution of denitrification to nitrate loss ranged from 6 to 28%, with a mean of 19.5% (±7.0), whereas that of plant uptake was from 72 to 94%, with a mean of 80.5% (±7.0), indicating the importance of vegetation in a sand dune riparian zone. A technique using the variation of natural abundance of 15N may provide useful information on the nitrate dynamics in artificial or natural wetlands under a non-destructive condition.  相似文献

The unusually harsh environmental conditions of terrestrial Antarctic habitats result in ecosystems with simplified trophic structures, where microbial processes are especially dominant as drivers of soil-borne nutrient cycling. We examined soil-borne Antarctic communities (bacteria, fungi and nematodes) at five locations along a southern latitudinal gradient from the Falkland Islands (51 degrees S) to the base of the Antarctic Peninsula (72 degrees S), and compared principally vegetated vs. fell-field locations at three of these sites. Results of molecular (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, real-time PCR), biochemical (ergosterol, phospholipid fatty acids) and traditional microbiological (temperature- and medium-related CFU) analyses were related to key soil and environmental properties. Microbial abundance generally showed a significant positive relationship with vegetation and vegetation-associated soil factors (e.g. water content, organic C, total N). Microbial community structure was mainly related to latitude or location and latitude-dependent factors (e.g. mean temperature, NO3, pH). Furthermore, strong interactions between vegetation cover and location were observed, with the effects of vegetation cover being most pronounced in more extreme sites. These results provide insight into the main drivers of microbial community size and structure across a range of terrestrial Antarctic and sub-Antarctic habitats, potentially serving as a useful baseline to study the impact of predicted global warming on these unique and pristine ecosystems.  相似文献

There is growing evidence from different sources that prolonged high N deposition causes a shift from nitrogen (N) limitation to nitrogen and phosphorus (P) co-limitation or even P limitation in many terrestrial ecosystems. However, the number of ecosystems where the type of limitation has been directly tested by longer-term full-factorial field experiments is very limited. We conducted a 5-year fertilization experiment with N and P in the Lüneburger Heide (NW Germany) to test the hypothesis that, following decades of elevated atmospheric N inputs, plant growth in dry lowland heaths may have shifted from N to N–P co-limitation or P limitation. We also tested whether the plant tissue N:P ratio reflects the type of nutrient limitation in a continental lowland heathland. Experimental plots dominated by Calluna vulgaris received regular additions of N (50 kg N ha−1 y−1), P (20 kg P ha−1 y−1), a combination of both, or water only (control) from 2004 to 2008. Over the whole study period, a highly significant positive N effect on shoot length was found, thus indicating N limitation. We conclude that a clear shift from N limitation to N–P co-limitation or P limitation has not yet occurred. Tissue N:P ratios showed a high temporal variability and no relationship between tissue N:P ratio and the shoot length response of Calluna to nutrient addition was found. The N:P tool is thus of limited use at the local scale and within the range of N:P ratio observed in this study, and should only be used as a rough indicator for the prediction of the type of nutrient limitation in lowland heathland on a larger geographical scale with a broader interval of N:P ratio.  相似文献

The diet of Cape petrel Daption capense was investigated at Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands (60°46S, 44°42W), Antarctica, in the period January–February 1996. Stomach contents of adults and regurgitate of chicks were sampled during the post-hatching period. The analysis showed that during the whole sampling period Antarctic krill and fish represented the predominant preys in terms of frequency of occurrence, forming nearly 35.8% and 64% by mass, respectively. The species Electrona antarctica was the most frequent fish prey. Amphipods were present in lower numbers and cephalopods were detected in the diet, but in a very small proportion. Diet composition in terms of frequency of occurrence, mass and number is compared with results of previous studies. Received: 27 September 1996 / Accepted: 22 February 1997  相似文献
