The distribution and bioavailability of trace metals in two contrasting tropical coastal lagoons were studied. The concentration of trace metals in aquatic macrophytes was compared with those found in sediments under weakly and strongly bound forms. The results showed that total metal concentrations in sediments did not explain the concentration found in plants. The highest concentrations in macrophytes were observed in the lagoon which had a higher fraction of metals weakly bound to sediments, but presented the lower total metal content. Low redox potential was the major variable keeping metals in non-bioavailable forms, possibly as refractory sulfides and metal-organic complexes. Among the macrophytes, rooted species showed lower concentrations of metals as compared to algae.  相似文献

Muni is a closed lagoon that opens to the sea when the water level is high, especially during the rainy season. During the dry period, the water level is very low and the salinity of the lagoon water increases sometimes exceeding that of seawater. Only three finfish species and 8 shellfish species (live animals and empty shells) were found in the lagoon and surrounding wetlands during the study which was conducted in March–June 1994. The blackchin tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron (Cichlidae) is the dominant species. The castnet is the most important fishing gear used in the lagoon followed by various finfish and shellfish traps. The fishing effort in the lagoon is high and, like catch rates, it was found to be inversely related to the volume of water in the lagoon and the fishing situation in the sea. The estimated exploitation level (E = 0.65) indicates that S. melanotheron in the Muni lagoon could be considered as over-exploited. From the gonadosomatic index, S. melanotheron appears to spawn continuously in the Muni lagoon between the months of March and June. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated for S. melanotheron as L = 12.5 cm standard length (SL), K = 0.70 yr–1 and t0 = 0.01 yr. The longevity of the fish is estimated as ca. 4.2 yr. Taboos and cultural practices contribute to the management and conservation of fisheries in the lagoon. However, additional formal management is required to ensure sustainability of the fisheries in the lagoon. In addition, there is a need to manage the lagoons physical and chemical environment including planting of mangroves around the lagoon in order to restore its mangrove cover. The poverty problem in the fishing community needs to be addressed to divert labour from the lagoon.  相似文献

This article concerns seasonal variations in the phosphate concentrations in two coastal lagoons near Montpellier (Mediterranean coast, France). The o-P concentration in the overlying water is highest during summer. The role of the sediment, particularly that of the different P fractions in the sediment, is discussed. Significant variations, especially in the FeOOH ≈ P fraction, occur. For both Tot-Psed and the Fe00H≈P fraction a gradient from surface to bottom is observed, as well as a distinct decrease in the FeOOH≈P fraction in the surface sediments during summer and autumn. Variations in the FeOOH≈P fraction appear to be compensated by variations in the CaC03≈P fraction. These variations appear to be determined by the ferric hydroxide concentration. This compound represents only a small part (maximally 15%) of the total iron in the sediments and is related to the dissolved oxygen content of the immediately overlying water. Besides the fractions o-P, Fe(OOH)≈P, a large part of the CaC03≈P fraction is potentially bioavailable. A large proportion of the Tot-Psed is therefore bioavailable.[/p]  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the phytoplankton at four depths off Tema, Ghana were investigated between September 1973 and November 1974. The physico-chemical factors show that there are two marine seasons, the season of major upwelling (July–October), characterized by low water temperatures (< 25°C), high salinity (> 35) and high nutrient levels, and a non-upwelling period (November–June) when water temperatures are higher and salinity and nutrients are lower. The latter marine season is broken by a small, unpredictable upwelling (December-January). Phytoplankton cell counts are high (> 1000 × 103 cells/1) during the major upwelling period and can be very low (< 2 × 103 cells/1) during the non-upwelling period. Dinoflagellates form the main components of the phytoplankton population during the nonupwelling period and diatoms form the dominant components at other times. There is a close relationship between the physicochemical factors and the phytoplankton population especially during the major upwelling period. For example there is a good correspondence between the peaks in phytoplankton numbers and low levels of nutrients such as silicate, nitrate and phosphate with the reverse taking place at other times.  相似文献

Activity and numbers of heterotrophic bacteria have indicated that, as expected, Prevost Lagoon is more eutrophic than Arcachon Bay. Amplification and sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA genes from DNA samples extracted directly from the environment allow the determination of phylogenetic relationships among members of microbial communities in natural ecosystems without the need for cultivation. Analysis of partial 16S rRNA gene sequences obtained from Stations A and 11 revealed that, in both environments, a relatively large number of clones related to Cytophaga/FlexibacterBacteroides as well as to -Proteobacteria were found. One hundred percent similarity with the sequences of the data bases were not found for any of the more than a hundred clones studied. In fact for most clones maximum similarity was below 95% for the nucleotide series sequenced. Similarity was not higher with any of the sequences found for the 14 isolates (pure cultures) obtained from the same samples. Redundancy, i.e. number of identical sequences, was higher in the samples from Arcachon. In addition, sequences related to representatives of ten major phylogenetic branches of Eubacteria were obtained from Prevost Lagoon, however only five branches were represented by the data from Arcachon. These findings indicate a higher bacterial diversity in Prévost Lagoon.  相似文献

Lake Nakanoumi is a shallow coastal lagoon connected with the Japan Sea by a narrow channel. Over the past decade, land reclamation resulted in a 33% reduction of the lagoon's surface area. The remaining water basin of Lake Nakanoumi is scheduled to be artificially freshened to supply irrigation water for the newly reclaimed lands. This paper deals with the seasonal and areal features of the lagoonal environment prior to the beginning of the artificial desalinization.  相似文献

Both interspecific and intraspecific inter-lagoon differences, between the central Mediterranean coastal lakes of Fogliano and Caprolace, in the trophic patterns of the examined species Diplodus annularis, Diplodus puntazza, Diplodus sargus, Lithognathus mormyrus and Sparus aurata were revealed by means of correspondence analysis. The most evident inter-lagoon qualitative and quantitative diet changes were observed in S. aurata . Feeding similarities among species were synthesized for each lake by means of multidimensional scaling. Trophic interrelationships among sparid fish were different in the two lagoons, as a direct consequence of diet variations in each species. Such differences are interpreted as possibly reflecting differences in the overall structure of the benthic communities. Different feeding models could be identified, each corresponding to a peculiar adaptive strategy for the consumption of lagoon benthic resources. The use of benthophagous fish feeding habits as a tool for the monitoring of the structure and the dynamics of coastal lagoon communities is discussed.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were undertaken using Amonardia normani and Schizopera cf. compacta, two meiobenthic harpacticoid copepods commonly found in coastal lagoons. The first experiments were designed to determine if the phototrophic sulfur bacteria Chromatium gracile can be ingested by these copepods and at what concentrations. Egestion rate was used as an index of feeding rate. The response of the egestion rate, expressed in numbers of faecal pellets produced by copepod per day, as a function of bacterial concentration followed the functional model. A. normani attained constant feeding rates from the bacterial concentration of 1 × 107 cells ml–1 (5 µg C ml–1) onwards, S. cf. compacta attained constant feeding rates from 2.6 × 107 cells ml–1 (13 µg C ml–1) onwards. The faecal pellet volume changed significantly (p<0.05) between food concentrations for A. normani but not for S. cf. compacta (p>0.05). In order to investigate the effect of the phototrophic bacterial diet on the population dynamics of A. normani three groups of nauplii were maintained at 2 × 107 cells ml–1 and observed every day. The mortality of these nauplii was very high compared to those maintained on a diatom diet (Nitzschia constricta); only in one of the groups did some copepodites develop but no adults were ever observed. Adults fed on bacteria did not have different (p>0.05) survival rates compared to those fed on diatoms, nevertheless, the number of nauplii produced was significantly less (p<0.05) on the bacterial diet. These results lead us to suggest that although the phototrophic sulfur bacteria (Chromatium gracile) can be ingested by both copepod species it cannot sustain the full development of the A. normani population. Thus, a bloom of phototrophic sulfur bacteria does not seem to be a favourable situation for opportunistic benthic copepods to colonize eutrophic coastal lagoons after a dystrophic crisis.  相似文献

Data collected over a ten year period have been used to review some characteristics of freshwater and coastal ecosystems in Ghana. Studies were conducted on two recently formed man-made lakes, one river, five coastal lagoons and waters along the ocean front.Freshwaters had near neutral pH while coastal waters were alkaline. In both ecosystems the pH of sediments were lower than those of corresponding waters. While the transparency of coastal waters varied within narrow limits, large variations were observed in freshwaters. The lowest concentration of nutrients occurred in the river and the highest in coastal waters.In general, differences in these physical and chemical characteristics do not depend on whether the aquatic systems were fresh, brackish or saline. They seem to be more influenced by such factors as whether a water body: (1) was lotic or lentic, (2) was influenced by industrial or domestic activities, (3) was affected by impoundment, (4) received turbid water inflows, or (5) was eutrophic.  相似文献

It is now well established that the size distribution of phytoplankton plays an important role in primary production processes and nutrient dynamics of coastal environment. In situ observations showed that nanophytoplankton (3–20 μm) contributed 72.08% and58.18% of phytoplankton biomass and 58.32% and 41.14% of primary productivity to Xiamen Western Waters and the northern Taiwan Strait, respectively; picophytoplankton (0.2–3 μm) dominated the biomass (64.70%) and productivity (66.09%) in the southern Taiwan Strait. Furthermore, nanophytoplankton accounted for 75% of phosphate uptake with the highest rate constant (8.3×10-5 s-1) and uptake rate in unit water volume (5.4×10-5 mmol dm-3s-1); picophytoplankton had the highest uptake rate in unit biomass (5.4×10-5 mmol mg-1s-1) and photosynthetic index (3.8 mgC mgChl a-1h-1). All the results highlighted the remarkable characteristics of small size ranged (0.2–20 μm) phytoplankton in subtropical coastal environments: main contributor to phytoplankton biomass and production, high efficiency on organic carbon production and nutrient recycling. The speciation of cadmium, lead, copper, zinc, manganese and iron into exchangeable, carbonate, reducible and organic bound fractions was studied in sediments from coastal and freshwater environments in Ghana. This was relevant as the species in which metals are stored within specific sediment components is important in determining their impact on the environment. For both coastal and inland sediments, a higher percentage of cadmium was associated with the more available exchangeable and carbonate fractions, while iron, zinc and manganese were mainly associated with the reducible and organic fractions. Lead and copper were found to have the greatest ability to form different species in the samples examined and were more evenly associated with all the fractions. The metals generally showed more ability to form different species in inland freshwaters than in coastal relatively saline waters. However, differences between inland and coastal waters were based more on whether the environments were oxidising or reducing than on whether they were fresh or saline. The metals may be divided into three groups of high mobility consisting of lead and copper; moderate mobility made up of cadmium, manganese and zinc; and low mobility, represented by iron.  相似文献

A microcosm experiment was conducted to assess the effects of salinity on coastal lagoon plankton assemblages. Five salinity levels were replicated four-fold in 3801 fiberglass tanks. Salinity levels used were 0, 8.5, 17, 34 and 51 ppt, or 0, 25, 50, 100 and 150 percent seawater. These were achieved by mixing concentrated lagoon water and tapwater in different proportions. Tanks were inoculated with plankton collected from San Dieguito Lagoon (Del Mar, San Diego County, California) and other fresh and saline waterbodies in the area. Selected physical-chemical variables, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and other invertebrate populations were monitored on five sampling dates over a 114 day period (13 August–5 December 1986).Total phytoplankton abundance increased with salinity, for salinities >17 ppt. Most taxa showed marked effects of salinity, though the pattern of the effects often varied greatly from date to date. Chlorophytes tended to be most abundant at 51 ppt. Pyrrhophytes were most abundant at 0 or 51 ppt, and least abundant at 8.5 or 17 ppt. Cryptophytes increased with increasing salinity. Euglenophytes exhibited no salinity effect on any date. Bacillariophytes were most abundant at 8.5–34 ppt and least abundant at 51 ppt, with individual taxa showing maxima at 0–17 ppt (Navicula, Synedra), 8.5–34 ppt (Surirella, Amphora), and 34 ppt (Cylindrotheca).Total zooplankton abundance decreased with salinity, for salinities > 17 ppt. The dominant taxa were protozoans, rotifers, cladocerans, and copepods, and all but the first group showed strong salinity effects. Protozoan abundance was unaffected by salinity. Rotifers were most abundant at 0 ppt (Keratella, Filinia) or 8.5 ppt (Brachionus). With few exceptions, cladocerans (Alona, Ceriodaphnia, Scapholeberis) were found only at 0 ppt. Abundance of calanoid copepods decreased with increasing salinity, with individual taxa showing maxima at 0 ppt (Diaptomus), 8.5–17 ppt (Pseudodiaptomus, Eurytemora), and 34 ppt (Acartia). Cyclopoid copepods were most abundant at 17 ppt, with individual taxa showing maxima at 0 ppt (Eucyclops), 8.5 ppt (Halicyclops), and 17 ppt (Oithona). Harpacticoid copepods (Cletocamptus, Tachidius) were most abundant at 17–34 ppt. Ostracods and mosquito (Culex) larvae were most abundant at 8.5 ppt and absent at 34 and 51 ppt. Polychaetes generally were most abundant at 17–34 ppt, and water boatmen (Trichocorixa) at 8.5–34 ppt. Various physical and chemical variables also showed significant variations with salinity. Tending to increase with salinity were temperature, ammonia and orthophosphate concentrations. Decreasing with salinity were pH, dissolved oxygen and silica concentrations. This article describes the use of satellite imagery for identifying key environmental characteristics within three North African coastal lagoons (Merja Zerga, Morocco; Ghar El Melh, Tunisia and Lake Manzala, Egypt) and for detecting the major environmental changes within these environments. A combination of Landsat MSS, Landsat TM, Landsat ETM+ and ASTER imagery was acquired for the three sites for a period covering the last three decades (1972–2004). Following geometric correction and enhancement, the interpretation of the most recent image acquired for each of the three lagoons provides important insights into their current conditions. For Merja Zerga, these include the distribution of the largest channels which drain extensive inter-tidal mudflats and the two major depositional features associated with sources of freshwater. The distribution of marginal aquatic vegetation is highlighted as is the intensive use of the surrounding landscape for agriculture. Intensive agriculture around Ghar El Melh is also indicated. The influence of the Mejerda River, which was diverted away from the lagoon over 100 years ago, is shown to persist as a residual area of deltaic deposits in shallow water that has been eroded over time. Coastal processes including the direction of the alongshore sediment transport and the influence of engineering work associated with port construction can also be recognised. Within Lake Manzala, vegetated islands divide the lake into a series of sub-basins which can be clearly distinguished. The large influence of human activities within this lake can be identified and include reclamation for agriculture and the conversion of parts of the lake bed for fish farms. The historical images available for the three lagoons provide important insights into decadal scale changes, which have been greatest at Lake Manzala. Since the early 1970s large parts of the lake, in particular in the southwest where the shoreline has migrated northwards, have been reclaimed. Major engineering works, such as the El Salam Canal and road embankments, are shown to have resulted in significant lake change. The distribution of emergent vegetation within the lake has also changed. Classification of images for this lake into open water, vegetation and land enables the quantification of these changes. Between 1973 and 2003, the lake declined in area by approximately 50%. Changes at Merja Zerga over the last three decades include reconfiguration of the marine outlet and the expansion of the internal delta at the end of the Nador Canal. The images of this site clearly demonstrate the intensification of agriculture around the lagoon. The most marked changes evident within the images of Ghar El Melh concern the sand bars that separate the lagoon from the sea. Geomorphological processes operating within the coastal zone have resulted in the straightening of the bars with central sections migrating out towards the sea. Spatial variability of phytoplankton as well as hydrological and chemical conditions in the Tagus coastal waters were studied during the spring of 1994. The highly patchy distribution of phytoplankton and the community structure were related to the specific abiotic conditions prevailing in the area. Two main water masses were distinguished: a tidally mixed one alongshore Lisbon-cape Espichel and a stratified region strongly related to the Tagus plume river. The latter seems to control, to some extent, the spatial phytoplankton variability and the timing and size of the spring bloom. The highest surficial levels of nutrients, specifically PO4 3–=1.00 M, NO3 =16.0 M and Si(OH)4=14.6 M, were clearly associated with Tagus river discharges, while the lowest levels were attained offshore in the zone of maximum chlorophyll a concentrations (30 mg m–3) reflecting the occurrence of high nutrient consumption. Furthermore, the near depletion of PO4 3– indicates P limitation for phytoplankton growth. The diatom Detonula pumila (0.1×106 cells l–1) was the dominant species of phytoplankton communities in the mixed zone, alongshore Lisbon-cape Espichel, whereas, the small diatom Thalassiosira sp. (3×106 cells l–1) was blooming offshore, associated with the stratified region.  相似文献

The species composition and assemblage structure of the ichthyoplankton from the Mar Menor Lagoon in south‐east Spain are given. The fish larvae were sorted from zooplankton samples collected at 20 stations with a plankton net (50 cm mouth diameter and 500 μm mesh) during 36 surveys between February and December 1997. A total of 39 575 fish larvae representing 14 families, 22 genera and 36 species were identified. Gobiidae was the most dominant family (77·0%) followed by Blenniidae (19·4%) and Atherinidae (1·3%). The most abundant species were Gobius niger and Gobius paganellus , which accounted for 42·7 and 19·3% of the total respectively. These species were followed in order of relative abundance by Pomatoschistus marmoratus (13·9%), Parablennius pilicornis (9·4%), Lipophrys pavo (7·7%), Atherina boyeri (1·3%) and Parablennius tentacularis (1·3%). The high species diversity (2·0–2·8 bits individual−1 for the annual diversity spectra at each sampling station) reflected a diverse assemblage of species. The main commercial species in the lagoon (Sparidae and Mugilidae) were poorly represented among the ichthyoplankton and they probably enter the lagoon on the bottom as recruits. Chlorophyll a concentration in the water column was the main factor explaining the seasonal variation in larval abundance. Spatial distribution of larvae was related to hydrographical circulation patterns in the lagoon and the movement of marine‐spawned larvae through the channels connecting the lagoon with the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

The Holocene evolution of eight South African coastal lakes and lagoons is examined and related to changes in fish composition over that period. Historical and current connectivity with riverine and marine environments are the primary determinants of present‐day fish assemblages in these systems. A small and remarkably consistent group of relict estuarine species have persisted in these coastal lakes and lagoons. The loss or reduction of connectivity with the sea has impacted on the diversity of marine fishes in all eight study systems, with no marine fishes occurring in those water bodies where connectivity has been completely broken (e.g. Sibaya, Groenvlei). In systems that have retained tenuous linkages with the sea (e.g., Verlorenvlei, Wilderness lakes), elements of the marine fish assemblage have persisted, especially the presence of facultative catadromous species. Freshwater fish diversity in coastal lakes and lagoons is a function of historical and present biogeography and salinity. From a freshwater biogeography perspective, the inflowing rivers of the four temperate systems reviewed here contain three or fewer native freshwater fishes, while the subtropical lakes that are fed by river systems contain up to 40 freshwater fish species. Thus, the significantly higher fish species diversity in subtropical versus temperate coastal lakes and lagoons comes as no surprise. Fish species diversity has been increased further in some systems (e.g., Groenvlei) by alien fish introductions. However, the impacts of fish introductions and translocations have not been studied in the coastal lakes and lagoons of South Africa. In these closed systems, it is probable that predation impacts on small estuarine fishes are significant. The recent alien fish introductions is an example of the growing threats to these systems during the Anthropocene, a period when human activities have had significant negative impacts and show potential to match the changes recorded during the entire Holocene.  相似文献

Within the framework of the international research project MELMARINA, seasonal dynamics of plankton communities in three North African coastal lagoons (Merja Zerga, Ghar El Melh, and Lake Manzala) were investigated. The sampling period extended from July 2003 to September 2004 with the aim of evaluating hydrological and other influences on the structure, composition and space-time development of these communities in each lagoon. Phytoplankton in Merja Zerga showed a quasi-permanent predominance of marine diatoms in the open sea station and in the marine inlet channel. Dinoflagellates were abundant in summer and early autumn in the marine inlet and extended into the central lagoon station. In Ghar El Melh, marine species (especially diatoms and dinoflagellates) dominated despite occasional winter inflows of freshwater. In Lake Manzala, freshwater species generally predominated and the planktonic communities were comparatively very diverse. Chlorophyceae contributed 39% of the total species recorded and diatoms and cyanophyceans were also common; the Dinophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Chrysophyceae and Cryptophyceae less so. Zooplankton communities in both Ghar El Melh and Merja Zerga were dominated by marine copepods. Rotifera, Copepoda, Ostracoda, and Cladocera were recorded in both lagoons as were meroplanktonic larvae of Polychaeta, Cirripedia, Mysidacea and Gastropoda and free living nematodes. Ghar El Melh was the more productive of these two lagoons with spring and early summer being the productive seasons. Zooplankton communities in Lake Manzala were generally dominated by rotifers and highest zooplankton abundances occurred in April (2003). Sampling stations near the marine inlets showed the highest diversity and the zooplankton communities showed considerable spatial variation within this large lagoon. The three lagoons represent very different water bodies contrasted strongly in terms of tidal effects and freshwater availability. Yet, there are some similarities in ecosystem structure. Space-time development of the plankton communities was similar especially in Merja Zerga and Ghar El Melh. Species abundances and specific diversities indicated that seasonal changes in salinity and nutrient concentrations were the main influential factors. Lake Manzala was the most productive lagoon and all the three sites supported toxic algal species. Relatively low plankton biomass in Merja Zerga and Ghar El Melh probably resulted from a combination of factors including highly episodic nutrient inputs, light suppression (by turbidity) and nutrient competition with benthic algae. Water quality variables were largely driven by the hydrological regime specific to each lagoon. Nutrient enrichment and, particularly for Lake Manzala, sea level rise threaten the sustainability of the planktonic ecosystems in all three lagoons. Changes in the rate of primary production as an indication of trophic status of aquatic ecosystems have been one of the major indicators of their health. Despite different approaches been devised for evaluating this process, few are useful for comparison and generalization of their results. The coastal zone ecosystems of Yucatan (SE Mexico) exhibit hydrological variability closely associated with the groundwater discharges, which are the only freshwater sources in the coastal ecosystems. In order to learn about the trophic status of karstic tropical coastal lagoons, three of them (Celestun, Chelem and Dzilam) located in Yucatan (SE, Mexico) were monitored for inorganic nutrients, Chl-a, phytoplankton and macrophyte productivity. The nitrate concentrations suggest that the trophic status was influenced by fresh water springs, being meso-eutrophic in Celestun, oligotrophic in Chelem, and mesotrophic in Dzilam. In the case of ammonium ions, the three lagoons were mesotrophic, indicating that processes such as remineralization play an important role in the trophic dynamic of these shallow ecosystems. According to phosphate concentrations, Celestun and Dzilam were mesotrophic, and Chelem was oligotrophic. External inputs of phosphate and bioturbation by waterfowl may be responsible of these differences. Primary productivity at Celestun was greater than at Chelem and Dzilam lagoons and the contribution by seagrasses was significant in all three. It is found that indices based on nutrient concentration and phytoplankton biomass are useful as an indication of trophic status in groundwater influenced coastal lagoons. Moreover, estimations on the total system productivity, and the relative contribution of each primary producer, is a holistic approach useful for understanding trophic dynamic in shallow tropical coastal ecosystems.  相似文献
