The biology of various species of the cribellate family Oecobiidae has been known only fragmentarily. Therefore observations on web construction, catching and mating behaviour of Oecobius annulipes are made. They are paralleled by morphological investigations on the mouth parts and the spinning apparatus. The results are in closest conformity with the corresponding characters of the ecribellate spider Uroctea durandi. A close phylogenetic relationship of both families is assumed.  相似文献

Studies based on presence/absence of a species may provide insight into habitat associations, allowing the distribution of species to be predicted across the landscape. Our objective was to characterise the epigeal spider fauna in three mature boreal forest types (conifer, mixedwood and deciduous) and a disturbed habitat (clearcut) to provide baseline data on the spider species inhabiting major forest types of boreal northwestern Ontario, Canada. Only spring-active epigeal spiders were considered for logistical reasons. We further identified the coarse woody debris structure and microhabitat characteristics within these stand types to try to refine our ability to predict the within-stand occurrence of spiders. We found the clearcut habitat strongly dominated by the Lycosidae with 55% of spiders represented by a single species, Pardosa moesta Banks. The forested habitats were more diverse, with web-building families forming a large component of the fauna and many species represented by only a few individuals. The spider composition of the deciduous stands (aspen and mixedwood) was very similar, and distinct from that of spruce stands. Species such as Agroeca ornata (Emerton) (Liocranidae) and Pirata montanus Emerton (Lycosidae) were strongly associated with deciduous leaf litter. Within the spruce stands, Agyneta olivacea (Emerton) (Linyphiidae) and Pardosa uintana Gertsch (Lycosidae) were associated with feathermoss rather than Sphagnum microhabitats. Many of the habitat associations observed at Rinker Lake do not conform well to those described in the taxonomic literature as typical for the species. Few associations with coarse woody debris or microhabitat attributes (other than ground cover type) were found.  相似文献

Summary The influence of feeding constraints on the feeding behaviour of Diaea sp. indet., was investigated. Diaea is a crab spider which ambushes its prey and practises extraintestinal digestion. A laboratory study was carried out using fruit flies, Drosophila immigrans, as prey. Diaea feeds from two sites on the prey — initially the head, followed by the posterior abdomen, with most of the prey's contents being extracted from the head. If additional prey are available, Diaea will, instead of switching to the posterior abdomen, catch a new prey item. The efficiency with which Diaea can extract food is influenced by changes which occur in the prey as a consequence of it being killed and fed on. Evaporative fluid loss from prey is an important constraint on food uptake because in influences the viscosity of the prey's contents. Regardless of whether a new prey item arrives, Diaea discards the prey item on which it is feeding before all of the available food has been extracted from it. The fluid content of the prey is not only part of the food the spider extracts, it is also a resource enabling efficient transfer of food from prey to predator. The value of the prey's fluid content as a resource decreases as a function of feeding time and as a consequence of the spider feeding on the prey.  相似文献

Spiders from the theridiid genus Argyrodes exhibit considerable variation in foraging tactics. However, little is known about the conditions under which Argyrodes spiders switch foraging tactics. Argyrodes flavescens (Pickard-Cambridge) is commonly found in the webs of another spider Nephila pilipes (Fabricius) in Singapore. In this study, a series of prey-choice tests were conducted for A. flavescens , both in the presence and absence of N. pilipes , to investigate the state-dependent prey type preference of A. flavescens . It was found that, in the absence of N. pilipes , well-fed A. flavescens took houseflies more than fruit flies, but starved A. flavescens took more fruit flies than houseflies. Whether N. pilipes spiders were present or absent, both well-fed and starved A. flavescens preferred living prey and rarely took wrapped prey of any kind. When well fed, A. flavescens rarely took mealworms. However, when starved, A. flavescens tended to take freshly captured prey, and also tended to feed together with N. pilipes on a housefly or mealworm captured by N. pilipes . Whether A. flavescens were absent or present, both well-fed and starved N. pilipes took mealworm larvae more often than they took houseflies, and they never attacked fruit flies. This is the first study to show that Argyrodes spiders alter their foraging tactics depending on hunger level, prey type, or the presence of the host. In doing so, Argyrodes spiders may maximize their energy gain and minimize predation risk in different circumstances.  相似文献

Portia fimbriata from Queensland, a previously studied jumping spider (Salticidae), routinely includes web-building spiders and cursorial salticids in its diet, both of these types of prey being dangerous and unusual prey for a salticid. The present paper is the first detailed study ofP. fimbriata's prey preferences. Three basic types of tests of prey preference were used, providing evidence that (1)P. fimbriata males and females prefer spiders (both web-building spiders in webs and salticids away from webs) to insects; (2)P. fimbriata males and females prefer salticids to web-building spiders; (3)P. fimbriata males and females prefer larger spiders to smaller spiders; (4) there are intersexual differences in the preferences ofP. fimbriata for prey size, females preferring larger prey and males preferring smaller prey; and (5)P. fimbriata's prey preferences are not affected by a prior period without food of 2 weeks. When preferences were tested for by using both living, active prey and dead, motionless lures, the same preferences were expressed, indicating thatP. fimbriata can distinguish among different types of prey independent of the different movement patterns of different prey.  相似文献

Abstract. The relationship between individual heterozygosity and characteristics likely to be associated with fitness was investigated in the labyrinth spider Metepeira ventura . Adult females and their egg sacs were collected at a coastal site in southern California, and three measures of bodily condition (carapace width, weight, residual index) and six measures of reproductive output (number of egg sacs, variation in egg number among sacs [coefficient of variation], total number of eggs, mean eggs/sac, mean eggs/sac divided by carapace width, mean eggs/sac divided by weight) were determined for each spider. The sample was polymorphic at three allozyme loci that were in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, and individual females were heterozygous at up to two of the three loci, forming three heterozygosity classes (0, 1, and 2). None of the bodily condition measures were significantly related to the number of heterozygous loci, while four of the reproductive output estimators (total number of eggs, mean eggs/sac, mean eggs/sac divided by carapace width, mean eggs/sac divided by weight) were significantly influenced by heterozygosity. In each significant case, values for class 2 females were less than those for class 0 and 1 females, whose values were usually more similar. Thus, while female bodily condition was comparable among classes, the most heterozygous females produced fewer total eggs and eggs per sac than their less heterozygous peers. The fact that females of M. ventura engage in a reproductive investment-number trade-off suggests that high-variability and low-variability females may be pursuing distinct reproductive strategies in the wild, with more heterozygous females being K -selected (smaller clutches, heavier eggs) and more homozygous females being r -selected (larger clutches, lighter eggs). Further investigation will be needed to assess more fully the fitness value of heterozygosity in M. ventura .  相似文献

To understand habitat preferences, seasonal abundance and diets of rodents in wet and dry season surveys were conducted in Alage, Southern Ethiopia. Sherman and snap traps were used to capture rodents from the four habitats: bushland, Acacia woodland, maize and wheat farmlands. A total of 3312 trap nights, from the four trapping habitats, yielded 776 individuals that represented 11 species of rodents. The distribution of rodents varied between habitats and seasons. Wet season rodent abundance was 52.3% while in the dry season it was 47.7%. Seasonal differences in species abundance were insignificant. Bushland habitat had high wet and dry season abundances with 137 and 211 individuals, respectively. Abundance was low in maize farm (57 individuals) in the wet season and wheat farm (10 individuals) in the dry season. Stomach content composition analysis of snap‐trapped rodents from different habitats showed differences between species and across seasons. Six rodent species were recorded as pests on the farmlands in this study area. In conclusion, variation in habitat preferences and diet of rodents in different habitats and across seasons might be due to the role of ground cover and food sources.  相似文献

What to attack is one of the most basic decisions predators must make, and these decisions are reliant upon the predator's sensory and cognitive capacity. Active choice of spiders as preferred prey, or araneophagy, has evolved in several distantly related spider families, including jumping spiders (Salticidae), but has never been demonstrated in ant-like jumping spiders. We used prey-choice tests with motionless lures to investigate prey-choice behaviour in Myrmarachne melanotarsa , an East African ant-like salticid that normally lives in aggregations and often associates with other spider species. We show that M . melanotarsa chooses spiders as prey in preference to insects and, furthermore, discriminates between different types of spiders. Myrmarachne melanotarsa 's preferred prey were juvenile hersiliids and its second most preferred were other salticids. To date, all documented examples of araneophagic salticids have been from the basal subfamily Spartaeinae. Myrmarachne melanotarsa is the first non-spartaeine and also the first ant-like salticid for which araneophagy has been demonstrated.  相似文献

The microstructural organization of the silk‐spinning apparatus of the comb‐footed spider, Achaearanea tepidariorum, was observed by using a field emission scanning electron microscope. The silk glands of the spider were classified into six groups: ampullate, tubuliform, flagelliform, aggregate, aciniform and pyriform glands. Among these, three types of silk glands, the ampullate, pyriform and aciniform glands, occur only in female spiders. One (adult) or two (subadult) pairs of major ampullate glands send secretory ductules to the anterior spinnerets, and another pair of minor ampullate glands supply the median spinnerets. Three pairs of tubuliform glands in female spiders send secretory ductules to the median (one pair) and posterior (two pairs) spinnerets. Furthermore, one pair of flagelliform glands and two pairs of aggregate glands together supply the posterior spinnerets, and form a characteristic spinning structure known as a “triad” spigot. In male spiders, this combined apparatus of the flagelliform and the aggregate spigots for capture thread production is not apparent, instead only a non‐functional remnant of this triad spigot is present. In addition, the aciniform glands send ductules to the median (two pairs) and the posterior spinnerets (12–16 pairs), and the pyriform glands feed silk into the anterior spinnerets (90–100 pairs in females and 45–50 pairs in males).  相似文献

A new species of recluse spider, Loxosceles niedeguidonaesp. n., is described from the Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara, State of Piauí, Brazil. This is the first endemic species described from Brazilian semi-arid environment. The species is included in gaucho group of Gertsch (1967) due to its spermathecal shape and is considered close to Loxosceles chapadensis Bertani, Fukushima & Nagahama, 2010 by the unusual long male palpal tibia, a character not common for species of this group. An updated key for Loxosceles species of gaucho group is presented.  相似文献

本文记述了分别采自云南省和湖南省的拟平腹蛛科斯托蛛属Storenomorpha 2新种:云南斯托蛛,新种S.yunnan sp.nov.和S.yizhang sp.nov..云南斯托蛛腹部背而两侧斑纹三角形,前后连接成行.粗壮的后胫节突,前端有2个距,其中背距长而有1扭曲.外雌器中隔宽大,交媾腔分为两侧腔,较大,纳精囊位于近生殖厣后缘,交媾管粗,由后向前,在交媾腔前方有1个拐点,扭曲向后与纳精囊相连.宜章斯托蛛腹部背面两侧斑纹4对,彼此分离不连成线,后胫节突和腹距长于背距,插入器鞭状,较云南斯托蛛长,末端超出生殖球一段距离.2新种形态结构有差异.两者以其后跗节突远端2个距的长度明显不同以及腹斑部背斑各异与模式种S.comottoi Simon,1884都不相同.模式标本云南斯托蛛正模、部分副模保存于湖南师范大学(HNU),部分副模将保存于美国加州科学学院(CAS).宜章斯托蛛模式种保存于湖南师范大学(HNU).文中量度单位为mm.  相似文献

The ecology and phenology of the Dysderidae (Araneae) were investigated in two different sites (Tala-Guilef and Tikjda), located at opposite slopes of the Djurdjura National Park in Algeria. The following questions were investigated: Are there any endemic species in the studied area? Do the slopes' orientation influence the abundance, richness and diversity of these spider communities? Are the activity and the vital cycle of the three most abundant species different in the two different plant physiognomies (cedar forests and alpine grasslands)? The Dysderidae were collected monthly for 2 years using pitfall traps. In total, 1532 specimens were collected: 333 males, 389 females and 381 juveniles in Tala-Guilef and 230 males, 66 females and 133 juveniles in Tikjda. Among the total of 10 species sampled, three species belonging to three genera in Tala-Guilef, 10 species belonging to four genera in Tikdja and four endemic species was recorded. The slope orientation influence the abundance and the species richness. The activity and the vital cycle of the three most abundant species were not different in the cedar forests and alpine grasslands. For these species, no relationship was found between the activity cycle and the vegetation physiognomy.  相似文献

Over a two-year period, we conducted population studies of Selenops cocheleti inhabiting trunks of Plinia cauliflora (Myrtaceae) and Pinus elliottii (Pinaceae) in southeastern Brazil. Adult females were present year-round while adult males were only present during summer, indicating a “stenochronous summer” phenological pattern. The longevity of adult females enables them to continuously generate egg-sacs throughout the year, resulting in the permanent recruitment of individuals. In conclusion, this study provides new insights into the life-history of S. cocheleti and how climatic variables and prey abundance influence the population abundance of the different age classes and adult sexes.  相似文献

The fine structure of book lungs is not homogeneous across Arachnids and is considered phylogenetically informative, however few reports on the ultrastructural features of this organ have been published. In this study, we examined the general morphology and ultrastructure of adult spiders of the genus Cteniza. The respiratory system of Cteniza sp. consists of two pairs of well-developed book lungs, which is considered indicative of primitive spiders. The general organization of the book lungs is similar to that described for other arachnids and consists of leaves of alternating air and hemolymph channels. The air channels are lined with cuticle and open to an atrium that leads to a slit-like spiracle. The air channels are held open by cuticular trabeculae. The space holders in the hemolymph channels are pillar trabeculae formed by two cells from the opposed walls. The pillar cells have a complex ultrastructure that includes an interdigitating connection, gap junctions, microtubules and hemidesmosomes. These features apparently help strengthen the pillar cells and their interconnections with each other and the underlying cuticle. The cytoskeleton resembles that of arthropod tendon cells where substantial structural support is needed.  相似文献
