It has been shown that young leaves of runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus) plants grown under natural conditions have an unusually high content of gamma-tocopherol, accounting for up to 90% of all tocopherols and 50% of the chlorophyll content. The level of gamma-tocopherol gradually decreased during the first two weeks of leaf development. The high content of gamma-tocopherol in young leaves was not significantly influenced by growth conditions. In contrast to seeds, gamma-tocopherol was also the main tocopherol found in light-grown and etiolated primary leaves of runner bean. The obtained results suggest that gamma-tocopherol decline during leaf development is not only due to conversion of gamma- to alpha-tocopherol but probably also due to degradation of gamma-tocopherol to non-tocochromanol compounds. We have also shown that gamma-tocopherol found in young leaves is mainly localized in thylakoid membranes within chloroplast. In the primary leaves subjected to different abiotic stresses, only during simultaneous drought and light stress, gamma-tocopherolquinone, an oxidation product of gamma-tocopherol, was preferentially accumulated. Since one of the other possible functions of gamma-tocopherol could be its action as a nitric oxide scavenger, young leaves were analyzed for the presence of nitro-gamma-tocopherol. However, despite the use of a sensitive detection method, it was not found. The possible physiological function of the increased level of gamma-tocopherol in the young leaves was discussed.  相似文献

Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) is synthesized from gamma-tocopherol in chloroplasts by gamma-tocopherol methyltransferase (gamma-TMT; VTE4). Leaves of many plant species including Arabidopsis contain high levels of alpha-tocopherol, but are low in gamma-tocopherol. To unravel the function of different forms of tocopherol in plants, an Arabidopsis plant (vte4-1) carrying a functional null mutation in the gene gamma-TMT was isolated by screening a mutant population via thin-layer chromatography. A second mutant allele (vte4-2) carrying a T-DNA insertion in the coding sequence of gamma-TMT was identified in a T-DNA tagged mutant population. In vte4-1 and vte4-2 leaves, high levels of gamma-tocopherol accumulated, whereas alpha-tocopherol was absent indicating that, presumably, these two mutants represents null alleles. Over-expression of the gamma-TMT cDNA in vte4-1 restored wild-type tocopherol composition. Mutant plants were very similar to wild type. During oxidative stress (high light, high temperature, cold treatment) the amounts of alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol increased in wild type, and gamma-tocopherol in vte4-1. However, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic quantum yield were very similar in wild type and vte4-1, suggesting that alpha-tocopherol can be replaced by gamma-tocopherol in vte4-1 to protect the photosynthetic apparatus against oxidative stress. Fatty acid and lipid composition were very similar in WT, vte4-1 and vte1, an Arabidopsis mutant previously isolated which is completely devoid of tocopherol. Therefore, a shift in tocopherol composition or the absence of tocopherol has no major impact on the amounts of specific fatty acids or on lipid hydrolysis.  相似文献

Tocopherols are amphipathic antioxidants synthesized exclusively by photosynthetic organisms. Tocopherol levels change significantly during plant growth and development and in response to stress, likely as a consequence of the altered expression of pathway-related genes. Homogentisate phytyltransferase (HPT) is a key enzyme limiting tocopherol biosynthesis in unstressed Arabidopsis leaves (E. Collakova, D. DellaPenna [2003] Plant Physiol 131: 632-642). Wild-type and transgenic Arabidopsis plants constitutively overexpressing HPT (35S::HPT1) were subjected to a combination of abiotic stresses for up to 15 d and tocopherol levels, composition, and expression of several tocopherol pathway-related genes were determined. Abiotic stress resulted in an 18- and 8-fold increase in total tocopherol content in wild-type and 35S::HPT1 leaves, respectively, with tocopherol levels in 35S::HPT1 being 2- to 4-fold higher than wild type at all experimental time points. Increased total tocopherol levels correlated with elevated HPT mRNA levels and HPT specific activity in 35S::HPT1 and wild-type leaves, suggesting that HPT activity limits total tocopherol synthesis during abiotic stress. In addition, substrate availability and expression of pathway enzymes before HPT also contribute to increased tocopherol synthesis during stress. The accumulation of high levels of beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherols in stressed tissues suggested that the methylation of phytylquinol and tocopherol intermediates limit alpha-tocopherol synthesis. Overexpression of gamma-tocopherol methyltransferase in the 35S::HPT1 background resulted in nearly complete conversion of gamma- and delta-tocopherols to alpha- and beta-tocopherols, respectively, indicating that gamma-tocopherol methyltransferase activity limits alpha-tocopherol synthesis in stressed leaves.  相似文献

Tocopherols are lipophilic antioxidants that are synthesized exclusively in photosynthetic organisms. In most higher plants, alpha- and gamma-tocopherol are predominant with their ratio being under spatial and temporal control. While alpha-tocopherol accumulates predominantly in photosynthetic tissue, seeds are rich in gamma-tocopherol. To date, little is known about the specific roles of alpha- and gamma-tocopherol in different plant tissues. To study the impact of tocopherol composition and content on stress tolerance, transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants constitutively silenced for homogentisate phytyltransferase (HPT) and gamma-tocopherol methyltransferase (gamma-TMT) activity were created. Silencing of HPT lead to an up to 98% reduction of total tocopherol accumulation compared to wild type. Knockdown of gamma-TMT resulted in an up to 95% reduction of alpha-tocopherol in leaves of the transgenics, which was almost quantitatively compensated for by an increase in gamma-tocopherol. The response of HPT and gamma-TMT transgenics to salt and sorbitol stress and methyl viologen treatments in comparison to wild type was studied. Each stress condition imposes oxidative stress along with additional challenges like perturbing ion homeostasis, desiccation, or disturbing photochemistry, respectively. Decreased total tocopherol content increased the sensitivity of HPT:RNAi transgenics toward all tested stress conditions, whereas gamma-TMT-silenced plants showed an improved performance when challenged with sorbitol or methyl viologen. However, salt tolerance of gamma-TMT transgenics was strongly decreased. Membrane damage in gamma-TMT transgenic plants was reduced after sorbitol and methyl viologen-mediated stress, as evident by less lipid peroxidation and/or electrolyte leakage. Therefore, our results suggest specific roles for alpha- and gamma-tocopherol in vivo.  相似文献

It is known that gamma-tocopherol inhibits human prostate cancer cell proliferation via down-regulation of cyclin-related signalling but tocopherol and tocotrienol metabolites with a shortened phytyl chain, carboxyethyl hydroxychromans, were not previously investigated as anti-proliferative agents. In this study, the effect of the two main tocopherols, namely, alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol, and their corresponding metabolites (alpha- and gamma-carboxyethyl hydroxychromans) was studied on proliferation and cyclin D1 expression of the prostate cancer cell line PC-3. The hydrosoluble vitamin E analogues Trolox and alpha-tocopherol succinate were also tested. The most effective inhibitors of PC-3 proliferation were gamma-tocopherol and gamma-carboxyethyl hydroxychroman. Their effect was discernable at 1 microM and reached a plateau at concentrations > or = 10 microM with maximal inhibition values ranging between 70 and 82%. alpha-Tocopherol, alpha-carboxyethyl hydroxychroman, and the analogue Trolox were much less effective; a weak effect was observed for concentrations < or = 10 microM and a maximal inhibition of less than 45% was found at 50 microM concentration. PC-3 cells showed higher inhibition, particularly by the gamma derivatives, than HTB-82 and HECV cells. Tocopherols and carboxyethyl hydroxychromans exerted an inhibitory effect on cyclin D1 expression parallel to the retardation of cell growth. gamma-Carboxyethyl hydroxychroman and gamma-tocopherol showed effects also upstream of the cyclin modulation. Furthermore, the inhibition of cyclin D1 expression by gamma-carboxyethyl hydroxychroman was competed for by alpha-carboxyethyl hydroxychroman. In conclusion, this study shows that carboxyethyl hydroxychroman metabolites are as effective as their vitamin precursors to inhibit PC-3 growth by specific down-regulation of cyclin expression, with the gamma forms being the most effective ones. Although the inhibition of PC-3 cell growth and diminution of cyclin expression are clearly visible, more subtle mechanistic effects of tocopherols and their corresponding carboxyethyl hydroxychroman metabolites deserve further investigations.  相似文献

Tocopherols are presumed to be important antioxidants and scavengers of lipid radicals and reactive oxygen species in plants. Age is known to be a condition under which oxidative stress increases. In leaves of aging Arabidopsis thaliana plants, the content of alpha-tocopherol as well as of gamma-tocopherol increased significantly. The activity of tyrosine aminotransferase, which supplies the biosynthetic pathway with 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate, was increased as well. On the other hand, coronatine, a phytotoxin mimicking octadecanoids and leading to symptoms of senescence, caused a moderate increase in alpha-tocopherol as well as some enhancement of gamma-tocopherol.  相似文献

Photosynthesis operates in a constantly shifting balance between efficient capture of solar energy and its rapid dissipation when captured in excess. In an attempt to better understand the role of alpha-tocopherol in plant photoprotection, we examined the changes in alpha-tocopherol quinone (alpha-TQ), in parallel with those of other low-molecular-weight antioxidants, in rosemary plants exposed to water deficit during a Mediterranean winter. Relative leaf water content (RWC) decreased from about 85% to approximately 65% in drought, but plants did not show symptoms of oxidative damage, as indicated by constant Fv/Fm ratios and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. alpha-TQ was present at concentrations of 20 mmol per 100 mol of chlorophyll, and represented less than 1% of total tocopherol content in non-stressed leaves. Although alpha-tocopherol levels were not significantly altered, alpha-TQ reached up to 36 mmol per 100 mol of chlorophyll under stress (under both high light and after exposure to increasing water deficit at lower light intensities). Furthermore, both alpha-TQ and xanthophyll cycle de-epoxidation were strongly negatively correlated with the relative efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry (phiPSII) at midday. The biological significance of alpha-tocopherol and alpha-TQ in the network of photo- and antioxidative protection mechanisms evolved by plants to withstand stress is discussed.  相似文献

Tocopherol content and isomers' composition in selected plant species.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have analyzed leaves of several plant species for the content and isomers' composition of tocopherols and it was found that their content was considerably higher in some cases than previously reported, especially in autumn tree leaves where the average tocopherols' level was in the range of 300-640 microg/g fresh weight and accounted for 40-140% of the chlorophyll amount. The isomers' composition, usually dominated by alpha-tocopherol in leaves, was different in some plant species with a high percentage of gamma-tocopherol (Kalanchoe, lettuce, dodder species, and young maple leaves) or delta-tocopherol (Cuscuta epithymum and Cuscuta japonica). C. japonica was exceptional by the complete absence of alpha-tocopherol. The possible reasons and physiological significance of these observations have been discussed.  相似文献

Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol or alphaT) has long been recognized as a classic free radical scavenging antioxidant whose deficiency impairs mammalian fertility. In actuality, alpha-tocopherol is one member of a class of phytochemicals that are distinguished by varying methylation of a chroman head group. Early studies conducted between 1922 and 1950 indicated that alpha-tocopherol was specific among the tocopherols in allowing fertility of laboratory animals. The unique vitamin action of alphaT, combined with its prevalence in the human body and the similar efficiency of tocopherols as chain-breaking antioxidants, led biologists to almost completely discount the "minor" tocopherols as topics for basic and clinical research. Recent discoveries have forced a serious reconsideration of this conventional wisdom. New and unexpected biological activities have been reported for the desmethyl tocopherols, such as gamma-tocopherol, and for specific tocopherol metabolites, most notably the carboxyethyl-hydroxychroman (CEHC) products. The activities of these other tocopherols do not map directly to their chemical antioxidant behavior but rather reflect anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, and natriuretic functions possibly mediated through specific binding interactions. Moreover, a nascent body of epidemiological data suggests that gamma-tocopherol is a better negative risk factor for certain types of cancer and myocardial infarction than is a alpha-tocopherol. The potential public health implications are immense, given the extreme popularity of alphaT supplementation which can unintentionally deplete the body of gamma-tocopherol. These findings may or may not signal a major paradigm shift in free radical biology and medicine. The data argue for thorough experimental and epidemiological reappraisal of desmethyl tocopherols, especially within the contexts of cardiovascular disease and cancer biology.  相似文献

alpha-Tocopherol inhibits glutathione S-transferase P1-1 (GST P1-1) (R.I.M. van Haaften, C.T.A. Evelo, G.R.M.M. Haenen, A. Bast, Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 280 (2001)). In various cosmetic and dietary products alpha-tocopherol is added as a tocopherol ester. Therefore we have studied the effect of various tocopherol derivatives on GST P1-1 activity. It was found that GST P1-1 is inhibited, in a concentration dependent manner, by these compounds. Of the compounds tested, the tocopherols were the most potent inhibitors of GST P1-1; the concentration giving 50% inhibition (IC(50)) is <1 microM. The esterified tocopherols and alpha-tocopherol quinone also inhibit the GST P1-1 activity at a very low concentration: for most compounds the IC(50) was below 10 microM. RRR-alpha-Tocopherol acetate lowered the V(max) values, but did not affect the K(m) for either 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene or GSH. This indicates that the GST P1-1 enzyme is non-competitively inhibited by RRR-alpha-tocopherol acetate. The potential implications of GST P1-1 inhibition by tocopherol and alpha-tocopherol derivatives are discussed.  相似文献

1. p-Hydroxy[U-(14)C]benzoic acid, except for loss of the carboxyl group, is effectively incorporated into the nucleus of ubiquinone and an unidentified prenylphenol by maize roots, maize shoots, french-bean leaves, french-bean cotyledons and Ochromonas danica. Plastoquinone, alpha-tocopherol, gamma-tocopherol and alpha-tocopherolquinone are all unlabelled from this substrate. The high radioactivity of the prenylphenol and its behaviour in a pulse-labelling experiment with maize shoots suggested that it may be a ubiquinone precursor. 2. Members of the 2-polyprenylphenol and 6-methoxy-2-polyprenylphenol series, compounds that are known ubiquinone precursors in Rhodospirillum rubrum, could not be detected in maize tissues, but possibly they may occur as their glycosides. 3. [G-(14)C]Shikimic acid is incorporated into the nuclei of phylloquinone, plastoquinone, alpha-tocopherolquinone, gamma-tocopherol, alpha-tocopherol and ubiquinone in maize shoots, showing that in plant tissues the nuclei of these compounds arise via the shikimic acid pathway of aromatic biosynthesis. 4. l-[U-(14)C]Phenylalanine and l-[U-(14)C]tyrosine are incorporated into plastoquinone, gamma-tocopherol, alpha-tocopherolquinone and ubiquinone. alpha-Tocopherol, which is absent from shoots incubated with l-[U-(14)C]tyrosine, is also labelled from l-[U-(14)C]phenylalanine. Degradation studies showed that there is little (14)C radioactivity in the terpenoid portions of the molecules and from this it is concluded that the aromatic portions of these amino acids are giving rise to the quinone and chromanol nuclei. 5. It is proposed that in maize the nucleus of ubiquinone can be formed from either phenylalanine or tyrosine by a pathway involving p-coumaric acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Plastoquinone, tocopherols and tocopherolquinones are formed from tyrosine by some pathway in which the aromatic ring and C-3 of the side chain of this amino acid gives rise to the nucleus and one methyl substituent respectively of these compounds.  相似文献

Oxidative damage has been hypothesized as the basis for some of the changes in enzymatic functions and physical properties of membranes in inherited muscular dystrophy. The contents of alpha- and gamma-tocopherol (vitamin E) and their oxidation products, the tocopheryl quinones, were measured at 1 to 4 weeks after hatching in the muscle and other tissues of chickens with inherited muscular dystrophy. Analyses at these early ages minimized the potential influence of pathological changes on the measured parameters. The affected muscle (pectoralis major) of dystrophic birds contained significantly higher levels of alpha-tocopheryl quinone and a decreased ratio of alpha- to gamma-tocopherol. Consistent changes in these parameters were not observed in other tissues. Although their basis remains unclear, these changes in the tocopherols are suggestive of oxidative stress in dystrophic muscle membranes. Lipid extracts of tissues of normal and dystrophic birds exhibited no significant differences in the content of conjugated dienes or lipofuscins, two other indices of oxidative stress. These data do not consistently support the hypothesis that oxidative stress plays a causal role in damage to dystrophic muscle, although it remains possible that free-radical damage is involved in the secondary alterations associated with muscular dystrophy.  相似文献

Physical and chemical scavenging of singlet molecular oxygen by tocopherols   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Singlet molecular oxygen (1O2) arising from the thermal decomposition of the endoperoxide of 3,3'-(1,4-naphthylidene) dipropionate was used to assess the effectiveness of alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol in the physical quenching as well as the chemical reaction of 1O2. The relative physical quenching efficiencies of the tocopherol homologs were found to decrease in the order of alpha greater than or equal to beta greater than gamma greater than delta-tocopherol. The ability of physical quenching depends on a free hydroxyl group in position 6 of the chromane ring. Chemical reactivity of the tocopherol homologs with 1O2 was low, accounting for 0.1-1.5% of physical quenching with beta-tocopherol showing particularly low reactivity, resulting in the sequence alpha greater than gamma greater than delta greater than beta-tocopherol. Tocopheryl quinones were products of all tocopherol homologs, and in addition a quinone epoxide was a major product from gamma-tocopherol. This quinone epoxide was not cleaved by rat liver microsomal epoxide hydrolase; however, it reacted further with 1O2. It is concluded that methylation in position 5 of the chromane ring enhances physical quenching of 1O2, whereas chemical reactivity is favored by a methylated position 7. In view of the fact that beta-tocopherol is as effective as alpha-tocopherol in physical quenching of 1O2 but shows very low chemical reactivity, this tocopherol homolog might be particularly suitable for biological conditions in which an accumulation of oxidation products might weaken the antioxidant defense.  相似文献

The effect of vitamin E on proliferation, integrin expression, adhesion, and migration in human glioma cells has been studied. gamma-tocopherol at 50 microM concentration exerted more inhibitory effect than alpha-tocopherol at the same concentration on glioma cell proliferation. Integrin alpha5 and beta1 protein levels were increased upon both alpha- and gamma-tocopherol treatments. In parallel, an increase in the alpha5beta1 heterodimer cell surface expression was observed. The tocopherols inhibited glioma cell-binding to fibronectin where gamma-tocopherol treatment induced glioma cell migration. Taken together, the data reported here are consistent with the notion that the inhibition of glioma cell proliferation induced by tocopherols may be mediated, at least in part, by an increase in integrin alpha5 and beta1 expression. Cell adhesion is also negatively affected by tocopherols, despite a small increase in the surface appearance of the alpha5beta1 heterodimer. Cell migration is stimulated by gamma-tocopherol. It is concluded that alpha5 and beta1 integrin expression and surface appearance are not sufficient to explain all the observations and that other integrins or in general other factors may be associated with these events.  相似文献

Plastoquinol as a singlet oxygen scavenger in photosystem II   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
It has been found that in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cells, under high-light stress, the level of reduced plastoquinone considerably increases while in the presence of pyrazolate, an inhibitor of plastoquinone and tocopherol biosynthesis, the content of reduced plastoquinone quickly decreases, similarly to alpha-tocopherol. In relation to chlorophyll, after 18 h of growth under low light with the inhibitor, the content of alpha-tocopherol was 22.2 mol/1000 mol chlorophyll and that of total plastoquinone (oxidized and reduced) was 19 mol/1000 mol chlorophyll, while after 2 h of high-light stress the corresponding amounts dropped to 6.4 and 6.2 mol/1000 mol chlorophyll for alpha-tocopherol and total plastoquinone, respectively. The degradation of both prenyllipids was partially reversed by diphenylamine, a singlet oxygen scavenger. It was concluded that plastoquinol, as well as alpha-tocopherol is decomposed under high-light stress as a result of a scavenging reaction of singlet oxygen generated in photosystem II. The levels of both alpha-tocopherol and of the reduced plastoquinone are not affected significantly in the absence of the inhibitor due to a high turnover rate of both prenyllipids, i.e., their degradation is compensated by fast biosynthesis. The calculated turnover rates under high-light conditions were twofold higher for total plastoquinone (0.23 nmol/h/ml of cell culture) than for alpha-tocopherol (0.11 nmol/h/ml). We have also found that the level of alpha-tocopherolquinone, an oxidation product of alpha-tocopherol, increases as the alpha-tocopherol is consumed. The same correlation was also observed for gamma-tocopherol and its quinone form. Moreover, in the presence of pyrazolate under low-light growth conditions, the synthesis of plastoquinone-C, a hydroxylated plastoquinone derivative, was stimulated in contrast to plastoquinone, indicating for the first time a functional role for plastoquinone-C. The presented data also suggest that the two plastoquinones may have different biosynthetic pathways in C. reinhardtii.  相似文献

During the past decade, the genes required for tocopherol (vitamin E) synthesis in plants and cyanobacteria have been identified. A series of mutants in which specific pathway steps are disrupted have been generated, providing new insights into tocopherol functions in photosynthetic organisms. Tocopherols are essential for controlling non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation during seed dormancy and seedling germination. Their absence results in elevated levels of malondialdehyde and phytoprostanes, and in inappropriate activation of plant defense responses. Surprisingly, tocopherol deficiency in mature leaves has limited consequences under most abiotic stresses, including high intensity light stress. The cell wall development of phloem transfer cells under cold conditions is, however, severely impaired in mature leaves of tocopherol-deficient mutants, indicating that tocopherols are required for proper adaptation of phloem loading at low temperatures.  相似文献

1. Radioactivity from l-[Me-(14)C,(3)H]methionine is incorporated into phylloquinone, plastoquinone, gamma-tocopherol, alpha-tocopherol, alpha-tocopherolquinone and ubiquinone in maize shoots. 2. Comparative studies with other terpenoids (squalene and beta-carotene) and chemical degradation of selected quinones (ubiquinone and plastoquinone) established that all the radioactivity is confined to nuclear methyl substituents. 3. In ubiquinone 76% of the radioactivity is in the methoxyl groups and 24% in the ring C-methyl group. 4. Taking the phytosterols as an internal reference and accepting the atomic ratio of (14)C/(3)H transferred from l-[Me-(14)C,(3)H]methionine to the supernumerary group at C(24) to be 1:2 the ratio of all the quinones and chromanols examined approached 1:3. After allowing for the fact that for plastoquinone, gamma-tocopherol, alpha-tocopherol and alpha-tocopherolquinone one nuclear methyl group is formed from the beta-carbon of tyrosine, these results show that one nuclear C-methyl group for phylloquinone, plastoquinone and gamma-tocopherol, two nuclear methyl groups for alpha-tocopherol and alpha-tocopherolquinone and one nuclear methyl and two methoxyl groups for ubiquinone are formed by the transfer of intact methyl groups from methionine. 5. From a comparison of the incorporation of (14)C radioactivity into these compounds it would appear that the methylation reactions involved in phylloquinone and plastoquinone biosynthesis take place in the chloroplast, whereas those involved with ubiquinone biosynthesis occur else-where within the cell.  相似文献

Tocopherols are essential micronutrients in human and animal nutrition due to their function as lipophilic antioxidants. They are exclusively synthesized by photosynthetic organisms including higher plants. Despite the attributed beneficial health effects and many industrial applications, research on the tocopherol biosynthetic pathway and its regulation in plants is still limited. In the work presented here we performed a detailed biochemical characterization of a gamma-tocopherol methyltransferase (gamma-TMT) from Arabidopsis thaliana and of a gamma-TMT purified from Capsicum annuum fruits, a tissue with high accumulation of tocopherols. The biochemical characteristics of both enzyme preparations were remarkably similar including substrate specificities. Both enzymes converted delta- and gamma- into beta- and alpha-tocopherol, respectively, but beta-tocopherol was not accepted as a substrate, pointing to a specific methylation at the C(5)-position of the tocopherol aromatic head group. A kinetic analysis performed with the Arabidopsis enzyme was consistent with an iso-ordered bi-bi type reaction mechanism. Our results emphasize the role of gamma-TMT in regulating the spectrum of accumulated tocopherols in plants.  相似文献

Chemotaxonomic relationships in Onagraceae have been investigated at the level of leaf and flower compounds but not for seed traits. The objective of this study was to characterize a set of 26 accessions (25 species, 7 genera) of this family for seed oil content, fatty acid composition, tocopherol content and composition, and to evaluate the chemotaxonomic implications of the results. The accessions showed a large variation for all the traits. Gamma-linolenic acid was exclusively found in Oenothera spp. where two groups, showing different concentrations of gamma-linolenic acid and alpha-tocopherol, were observed. The species of Clarkia Pursh were markedly different to the rest of species, showing low alpha-linolenic acid and low gamma-tocopherol concentration. Circaea lutetiana L. had a characteristic tocopherol profile, with high levels (13%) of beta-tocopherol. Variation for fatty acid and tocopherol composition in Epilobium spp. suggested some phylogenetic relationships. The annual species E. pankulatum Nutt. showed a characteristic composition very similar to the closely related Boisduvalia densiflora (Lindl.) S. Watson. The accessions of the phylogenetically related E. fleischeri Hochst. and E. dodonaei Vill., also showed similar fatty acid and tocopherol composition. The results of this study suggest a potential chemotaxonomic value of seed fatty acids and tocopherols in Onagraceae.  相似文献
