Freshly emerged, inexperienced imagos of the hoverfly Eristalis tenax L. extend their proboscis towards small, yellow colour stimuli, such as anther parts and artificial floral guides. The releasing of this behaviour, which is adapted to pollen feeding, was investigated in behavioural tests using white, UV-reflecting artificial flowers with four small screens illuminated with test stimuli serving as artificial floral guides. The releasing of the innate proboscis extension was tested using monochromatic test lights. Within an intensity range from approx. 5·1011 to approx. 1014 quanta · cm-2· s-1, the flies extended their proboscis only towards green and yellow test lights (approx. 520–600 nm). The inhibition of the innate proboscis extension was tested using mixed light stimuli composed of a yellow monochromatic reference light (560 nm, 1013 quanta·cm-2 -1) and of a monochromatic test light. When the reference light was mixed with ultraviolet or blue test lights, the releasing of the innate proboscis extension was strongly inhibited, whereas admixing green/yellow light slightly promoted it; admixing red light had no effect. The results indicate that the releasing of the innate proboscis extension is mediated by the photoreceptor type R8y. Other receptor types which could cause the inhibition of the proboscis reaction are discussed.  相似文献

1. The melanophores of a freshwater teleost, Zacco temmincki, responded to changes in illumination: in darkness the melanophores induced a melanosome aggregation and when subjected to light they caused a melanosome dispersion. 2. Using monochromatic light, the spectral sensitivity of the melanophores was examined. 3. The melanophores showed a different sensitivity to light between 400 and 600 nm with a maximum at about 525 nm. 4. The action spectrum closely resembled a porphyropsin absorbance curve, suggesting a porphyropsin or similar photopigment is active in the melanophore light response of Zacco temmincki.  相似文献

The study of foraging behaviour of butterflies has been an important focus among the lepidopterists for years. Although established as invasive weed plant, the role Lantana camara as an important host plant as well as a food plant for the butterfly species is now well-known. The present study aims to interpret the role of morphological variables of the visitor butterflies in relation to their foraging behaviour on Lantana camara. Butterflies with longer proboscis were more efficient in foraging on flowers of Lantana camara than the butterflies with shorter ones, when the species containing proboscis same as or longer than their body length were excluded. Longer relative proboscis length (RPL) have selective advantage for foraging over Lantana camara up to a certain point (RPL = 0.881) and after that larger relative proboscis length often obstructs foraging behaviour as the handling time increases and these butterflies face more resistance against incoming nectar than the others. The residuals (body weight-wing span) also act as important factor. The handling time of the butterflies on Lantana camara shows a negative relationship with the residuals. The findings suggests that in case of Lantana camara as a nectaring plant butterfly species with longer proboscis have selective advantage for exploitation of the resource than the species with shorter ones and plantation of Lantana camara may be useful for conserving the long tongued butterfly species.  相似文献

In a previous study of the phototaxis of green rice leafhoppers, Nephotettix cincticeps (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae), we found positive responses to 735 nm light. Here, we investigated the mechanism underlying this sensitivity to near-infrared light. We first measured the action spectrum using a Y-maze with monochromatic lights from 480 to 740 nm. We thus found that the action spectrum peaks at 520 nm in the tested wavelength range, but that a significant effect is still observed at 740 nm, albeit with a sensitivity 5 log units lower than the peak. Second, we measured the spectral sensitivity of the eye, and found that the sensitivity in the long-wavelength region parallels the behaviorally determined action spectrum. We further identified mRNAs encoding opsins of ultraviolet, blue, and green-absorbing visual pigments, and localized the mRNAs in the ommatidia by in situ hybridization. The electrophysiology, molecular biology and the anatomy of the eye together indicate that the eyes of N. cincticeps do not contain true “red” receptors, but rather that the behavioral response to near-infrared light is mediated by the tail sensitivity of the green receptors in the long-wavelength region of the spectrum.  相似文献

Summary Cultures of unicellular algal flagellateEuglena gracilis grown in different conditions were subjected to action spectroscopy for step-down and step-up photophobic responses, respectively. The spectral region was extended into the UV-B/C as well as in the UV-A and visible regions with the Okazaki Large Spectrograph as the monochromatic light source. The photophobic responses of the cells were measured with an individual-cell assay method with the aid of a computerized video motion analyzer. In the UV-A and visible regions, the shapes of the action spectra were the so-called UV-A/blue type. In the newly studied UV-B/C region, new action peaks were found at 270 nm for the step-down response and at 280 nm for the step-up one. The absorption spectrum of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) appeared to fit the action spectrum for the step-up response, whereas the shape of the step-down action spectrum, which has a UV-A peak (at 370 nm) higher than the blue peak (at 450 nm), appeared to be mimicked by the absorption spectrum of a mixed solution of 6-biopterin and FAD. These observations might also account for the fact that the UV-B/C peak wavelength at 270 nm of the action spectrum for the step-down response is shorter by 10 nm than the action spectrum for the step-up response at 280 nm.Abbreviations FAD flavin adenine dinucleotide - FWHM spectral full width at half maximum - NIBB National Institute for Basic Biology - OLS Okazaki Large Spectrograph - PFB paraflagellar body - UV-A ultraviolet light of spectral region between 320 and 400 nm - UV-B/C ultraviolet light of spectral region between 190 and 320 nm  相似文献

Many insects use the polarization pattern of the sky for obtaining compass information during orientation or navigation. E-vector information is collected by a specialized area in the dorsal-most part of the compound eye, the dorsal rim area (DRA). We tested honeybees' capability of learning certain e-vector orientations by using a classical conditioning paradigm with the proboscis extension reflex. When one e-vector orientation (CS+) was associated with sugar water, while another orientation (CS-) was not rewarded, the honeybees could discriminate CS+ from CS-. Bees whose DRA was inactivated by painting did not learn CS+. When ultraviolet (UV) polarized light (350 nm) was used for CS, the bees discriminated CS+ from CS-, but no discrimination was observed in blue (442 nm) or green light (546 nm). Our data indicate that honeybees can learn and discriminate between different e-vector orientations, sensed by the UV receptors of the DRA, suggesting that bees can determine their flight direction from polarized UV skylight during foraging. Fixing the bees' heads during the experiments did not prevent learning, indicating that they use an 'instantaneous' algorithm of e-vector detection; that is, the bees do not need to actively scan the sky with their DRAs ('sequential' method) to determine e-vector orientation.  相似文献

On the mechanics and energetics of nectar feeding in butterflies.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A mechanistic model describing the mechanics and energetics of nectar-feeding in butterflies is developed. The butterflies Collas eurytheme and Danaus plexippus are used to illustrate the model. Simulation results indicate that there are mechanical limitations upon the range of nectar sugar concentrations and nectar extraction times available to butterflies. There is a unique optimum for net rate of energy gain at 20–25% nectar sugar concentration which is independent of the metabolic rate and of proboscis shape and size over the ranges found in butterflies. The optimal nectar extraction rate depends upon the size and shape of the proboscis. These results are discussed in relation to the design of nectar feeding structures, optimal foraging strategy, and the evolution of insect pollination.  相似文献

A key problem faced by foragers is how to forage when resources are distributed heterogeneously in space. This heterogeneity and associated trade‐offs may change with spatial scale. Furthermore, foragers may also have to optimize acquiring multiple resources. Such complexity of decision‐making while foraging is poorly understood. We studied the butterfly Ypthima huebneri to examine how foraging decisions of adults are influenced by spatial scale and multiple resources. We predicted that, at a small‐spatial scale, the time spent foraging in a patch should be proportional to resources in the patch, but at large‐spatial scales, due to limitations arising from large travel costs, this relationship should turn negative. We also predicted that both adult and larval resources should jointly affect foraging butterflies. To test these predictions, we laid eleven plots and sub‐divided them into patches. We mapped nectar and larval resources and measured butterfly behavior in these patches and plots. We found that adult foraging behavior showed contrasting relationships with adult resource density at small versus large‐spatial scales. At the smaller‐spatial scale, butterflies spent more time feeding in resource‐rich patches, whereas at the large‐scale, butterflies spent more time feeding in resource‐poor plots. Furthermore, both adult and larval resources appeared to affect foraging decisions, suggesting that individuals may optimize search costs for different resources. Overall, our findings suggest that the variation in foraging behavior seen in foragers might result from animals responding to complex ecological conditions, such as resource heterogeneity at multiple spatial scales and the challenges of tracking multiple resources.  相似文献

The human eye is insensitive to the angular direction of the light e-vector, but several animal species have the ability to discriminate differently polarized lights. How the polarization is detected is often unclear, however. Egg-laying Papilio butterflies have been shown to see false colours when presented with differently polarized lights. Here we asked whether this also holds in foraging butterflies. After training individuals to feed on nectar in front of an unpolarized spectral light, we carried out three dual-choice tests, where the discrimination of (i) the spectral content, (ii) the light intensity, and (iii) the e-vector orientation were investigated. In the first test, the butterflies selected the trained spectrum irrespective of its intensity, and in the second test they chose the light with the higher intensity. The result of the e-vector discrimination test was very similar to that of the second test, suggesting that foraging butterflies discriminate differently polarized lights as differing in brightness rather than as differing in colour. Papilio butterflies are clearly able to use at least two modes of polarization vision depending on the behavioural context.  相似文献

Cryptochrome blue-light photoreceptors are found in both plants and animals and have been implicated in numerous developmental and circadian signaling pathways. Nevertheless, no action spectrum for a physiological response shown to be entirely under the control of cryptochrome has been reported. In this work, an action spectrum was determined in vivo for a cryptochrome-mediated high-irradiance response, the blue-light-dependent inhibition of hypocotyl elongation in Arabidopsis. Comparison of growth of wild-type, cry1cry2 cryptochrome-deficient double mutants, and cryptochrome-overexpressing seedlings demonstrated that responsivity to monochromatic light sources within the range of 390 to 530 nm results from the activity of cryptochrome with no other photoreceptor having a significant primary role at the fluence range tested. In both green- and norflurazon-treated (chlorophyll-deficient) seedlings, cryptochrome activity is fairly uniform throughout its range of maximal response (390-480 nm), with no sharply defined peak at 450 nm; however, activity at longer wavelengths was disproportionately enhanced in CRY1-overexpressing seedlings as compared with wild type. The action spectrum does not correlate well with the absorption spectra either of purified recombinant cryptochrome photoreceptor or to that of a second class of blue-light photoreceptor, phototropin (PHOT1 and PHOT2). Photoreceptor concentration as determined by western-blot analysis showed a greater stability of CRY2 protein under the monochromatic light conditions used in this study as compared with broad band blue light, suggesting a complex mechanism of photoreceptor activation. The possible role of additional photoreceptors (in particular phytochrome A) in cryptochrome responses is discussed.  相似文献

The photo-induced cell division in single-celled protonemata of the fern Adiantum capillus-veneris was studied. When the protonemata were exposed to monochromatic light at 50 nm intervals between 350 and 750 nm, irradiations in the blue and near-ultraviolet regions effectively induced cell division, while wavelengths longer than 550 nm showed no such effect. As reciprocity between duration and intensity was observed within the range of incident energy used, the action spectrum for the frequency of the photo-induced cell divisions 24 h after irradiation was determined between 360 and 510 nm at 10 nm intervals. Furthermore, the previously known effect of phytochrome on the timing of the cell division was minimized by a short exposure to red light given immediately after the monochromatic irradiation. The resulting action spectra showed a peak in the neighborhood of 460 nm with shoulders and another peak in the near-ultraviolet region.  相似文献

This study investigated the ability of the honeybee to discriminatebetween six compounds previously identified as oilseed rapefloral volatiles: linalool, 2-phenylethanol, methyl salicylate, benzyl alcohol, (E)-2-hexenal and 1-octen-3-ol. These componentswere tested individually or in a synthetic mixture for theirability to elicit the conditioned proboscis extension response.Three experiments were done: conditioning to the mixture atone concentration (1.0, 0.1 or 0.01 µg per component)and testing to the individual components either at the conditioningor at the other concentrations; conditioning to individual componentsand testing to the mixture (1.0 µg); conditioning andtesting to the individual components (1.0 µg). The resultsfrom the proboscis extension assay were then compared to thoseobtained from free-flying bees in a flight room. From the conditionedproboscis extension assay, a conditioning threshold level wasfound (0.1 µg for the mixture studied) below which a reliableconditioning could not be achieved. Recognition thresholds wereobserved: bees responded to concentrations ten-fold higher orlower than that used for conditioning. Responses to lower concentrationswere weaker, whilst responses were increased at concentrationshigher than the conditioning one. A hierarchy within the compoundstested was found, with linalool, 2-phenylethanol and methylsalicylate cueing mixture recognition more effectively thanthe other components. The ranking order of the six componentswas similar in both the conditioned proboscis extension andthe conditioned foraging behaviour in flight room. When conditionedand tested to the individual components, bees discriminateda learned odour from a number of others. However, the specificitylevel for the recognition of the learned odour varied accordingto the component, the most clearly discriminated being the compoundswhich were used by the bee in mixture recognition.  相似文献

We studied associative visual learning in harnessed honeybees trained with monochromatic lights associated with a reward of sucrose solution delivered to the antennae and proboscis, to elicit the proboscis extension reflex (PER). We demonstrated five properties of visual learning under these conditions. First, antennae deprivation significantly increased visual acquisition, suggesting that sensory input from the antennae interferes with visual learning. Second, covering the compound eyes with silver paste significantly decreased visual acquisition, while covering the ocelli did not. Third, there was no significant difference in the visual acquisition between nurse bees, guard bees, and foragers. Fourth, bees conditioned with a 540-nm light stimulus exhibited light-induced PER with a 618-nm, but not with a 439-nm light stimulus. Finally, bees conditioned with a 540-nm light stimulus exhibited PER immediately after the 439-nm light was turned off, suggesting that the bees reacted to an afterimage induced by prior adaptation to the 439-nm light that might be similar to the 540-nm light.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at and is accessible for authorized users.  相似文献

High-intensity red light suppresses melatonin   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Early studies on rodents indicated that the long-wavelength portion of the spectrum (orange- and red-appearing light) could influence circadian and neuroendocrine responses. Since then, both polychromatic and analytic action spectra in various rodent species have demonstrated that long-wavelength light is very weak, if not entirely inactive, for regulating neurobehavioral responses. Since testing of monochromatic light wavelengths above 600 nm is uncommon, many researchers have assumed that there is little to no effect of red light on the neuroendocrine or circadian systems. The aims of the following studies were to test the efficacy of monochromatic light above 600 nm for melatonin suppression in hamsters and humans. Results in hamsters show that 640 nm monochromatic light at 1.1 x 10(17) photons/cm2 can acutely suppress pineal melatonin levels. In normal healthy humans, equal photon density exposures of 1.9 x 10(18) photons/cm2 at 460, 630, and 700 nm monochromatic light elicited a significant melatonin suppression at 460 nm and small reductions of plasma melatonin levels at 630 and 700 nm. These findings are discussed relative to the possible roles of classical visual photoreceptors and the recently discovered intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells for circadian phototransduction. That physiology, and its potential for responding to red light, has implications for domestic applications involving animal care, the lighting of typical human environments, and advanced applications such as space exploration.  相似文献

An action spectrum for light induced carotenogenesis in Verticillium agaricinum (Link) Corda (ATCC 24668) was obtained by exposing mycelial pads to monochromatic radiation. Action maxima occurred at 290 (main peak) and 390 nm, and there was a minor peak at 483 nm. The results also showed interaction between the blue and UV light. Blue light partly reversed the UV light induction of carotenogenesis when given after, but not when given before UV light. This implies that there are at least two photoreceptors involved in carotenogenesis in Verticillium , but phytochrome is not likely to be one of them.  相似文献

The common Spanish name of the moth Rothschildia lebeau (Saturniidae) is cuatro ventanas (four 'windows'), because it exhibits a transparent oval path in each wing. The scales of the colored areas and the bristles from the "window" were analyzed. We developed a simple device to measure transmittance across the "windows" with an spectrophotometer. A square section of "window" was mounted onto a flat black card and placed onto a clamp that hung in the path of the light - beam of the spectrophotometer. Absorbance was measured at 350 and 550 nm, with the "window" positioned perpendicular to the light beam (incidence of 90 degrees); then the measurements were repeated with the "window" moved at an angle of 45 degrees. Each measurement was replicated 5 times. Wing color spots were analyzed with a light dissection microscope (stereoscope) and with scanning electron microscopy. The scales have a minimum of 4 morphological types, 3 of them showed the typical appearance of unspecialized scales described for other butterflies; whereas the fourth has features particular to this species. On the "window" the scales are transformed in hair-like bristles that do not interfere with light, conferring the transparency that characterizes the "windows". However, if the wing is illuminated at an almost grazing-incidence, they reflect the light as a mirror. Two hypothetical functional explanation for the windows are mimicry and interspecies communication.  相似文献

The active compounds of oak‐sap odour in attracting adults of two butterflies, Kaniska canace (L.) and Vanessa indica (Herbst) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), were identified by chemical analyses, electroantennogram (EAG) and two behavioural assays: proboscis extension reflex (PER) and attraction to artificial tree models. Fourteen compounds were identified from two sap samples collected in 1997 and 1998, of which the major volatiles were ethanol and acetic acid (≈ 900 p.p.m. and 500 p.p.m. in sap, respectively). However, the chemical composition of the minor volatiles varied considerably between the two samples. Among 13 chemicals tested, V. indica showed strong PER to five aliphatic acids (acetic, propionic, butyric, isobutyric and isovaleric), 2‐methylpropan‐1‐ol and 3‐hydroxybutan‐2‐one, whereas the PER‐active compounds for K. canace were these seven compounds and also ethanol, 3‐methylbutan‐1‐ol and 1‐hydroxypropan‐2‐one. In two‐choice behavioural bioassays, the model scented with a sap‐odour mimic, which was an aqueous mixture of the PER‐active compounds, was more attractive to the two butterflies than an unscented control. These results demonstrated that the sap odour stimulates foraging behaviour of the butterfly. Although EAG responses of both butterflies to 3‐methylbutan‐1‐ol and that of V. indica to 2‐methylpropan‐1‐ol were positively dose‐dependent, responses to other compounds were not strong and not dose‐dependent at 1–100 μg doses. These EAG responsiveness suggests that the olfactory receptors for these compounds might be few in the antenna and that the butterflies have enough olfactory sensitivity to the dose of 1 μg.  相似文献

The functionality of butterfly mouthparts (proboscis) plays an important role in pollination systems, which is driven by the reward of nectar. Proboscis functionality has been assumed to require action of the sucking pump in the butterfly's head coupled with the straw-like structure. Proper proboscis functionality, however, also is dependent on capillarity and wettability dynamics that facilitate acquisition of liquid films from porous substrates. Due to the importance of wettability dynamics in proboscis functionality, we hypothesized that proboscides of eastern black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes asterius Stoll) (Papilionidae) and cabbage butterflies (Pieris rapae Linnaeus) (Pieridae) that were experimentally split (i.e., proboscides no longer resembling a sealed straw-like tube) would retain the ability to feed. Proboscides were split either in the drinking region (distal 6–10% of proboscis length) or approximately 50% of the proboscis length 24 h before feeding trials when butterflies were fed a red food-coloring solution. Approximately 67% of the butterflies with proboscides split reassembled prior to the feeding trials and all of these butterflies displayed evidence of proboscis functionality. Butterflies with proboscides that did not reassemble also demonstrated fluid uptake capabilities, thus suggesting that wild butterflies might retain fluid uptake capabilities, even when the proboscis is partially injured.  相似文献
