1. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is one of the world’s most invasive aquatic plants and is known to cause significant ecological and socio‐economic effects. 2. Water hyacinth can alter water clarity and decrease phytoplankton production, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, heavy metals and concentrations of other contaminants. 3. The effects of water hyacinth on ecological communities appear to be largely nonlinear. Abundance and diversity of aquatic invertebrates generally increase in response to increased habitat heterogeneity and structural complexity provided by water hyacinth but decrease due to decreased phytoplankton (food) availability. 4. Effects of water hyacinth on fish are largely dependent on original community composition and food‐web structure. A more diverse and abundant epiphytic invertebrate community may increase fish abundance and diversity, but a decrease in phytoplankton may decrease dissolved oxygen concentrations and planktivorous fish abundance, subsequently affecting higher trophic levels. 5. Little is known about the effects of water hyacinth on waterbird communities; however, increases in macroinvertebrate and fish abundance and diversity suggest a potentially positive interaction with waterbirds when water hyacinth is at moderate density. 6. The socio‐economic effects of water hyacinth are dependent on the extent of the invasion, the uses of the impacted waterbody, control methods and the response to control efforts. Ecosystem‐level research programmes that simultaneously monitor the effects of water hyacinth on multiple trophic‐levels are needed to further our understanding of invasive species.  相似文献

In the shallow, nutrient-rich dammed-up lake Hjarbæk Fjord the balance between phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish was completely disturbed during the summer period. Extensive growth of small blue-green algae (Oscillatoria cfr. trichoides, Pseudanabaena galeata) and chlorococcal green algae (Scenedesmus spp., Monoraphidium contortum, Actinastrum hantzschii) induced a pH rise to 10.5 in July. Fish were driven into the rivers, and many that did not escape died. After the fish had disappeared daphniae multiplied explosively and grazed away the major part of the phytoplankton. Ammonia concentrations rose and oxygen concentrations dropped to noxious levels for highly sensitive fish in August–September. Larger phytoplankton species (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Pediastrum boryanum, Pandorina morum, a. o.) were not grazed by the daphniae and gave rise to a maximum of copepods in September. Fish returned to the lake in October, when pH, ammonia, and oxygen levels had normalized.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 The uptake of phosphate and inorganic nitrogen by sediment and phytoplankton was studied under natural conditions (1977) and during lake fertilization with phosphorus and nitrogen (1978–79) in Lake Gunillajaure, a small, stratified, subarctic lake in northern Sweden. The experiments were performed in situ in plexiglass cylinders, to which additions of nutrients were made, and the uptake followed by consecutive sampling and analysis of the water phase.
  • 2 Additions of HgCl2 to the experimental vessels reduced the phosphate uptake to the sediment to less than 10% and it could therefore be concluded that the sediment uptake was mainly of biological nature.
  • 3 Dark assimilation was 30–40% of that in light. Since light clearly stimulated the sediment uptake the epipelic algae were probably responsible.
  • 4 The phosphate uptake to the sediment could be described by Michaelis-Menten kinetics and the calculated constants (Vmax, ks) were very alike in 1977 and 1978 but appeared to have increased in 1979.
  • 5 The sediment uptake of ammonium and nitrate was very slow indrcating that the epipelic algae were not nitrogen starved.
  • 6 Even though the epipelic algae had a potential for efficient uptake of phosphorus, the phytoplankton took up 92–96% of the phosphate added to the lake on each fertilization occasion due to the relatively large water volume in the epilimnion in relation to the bottom area available for the epipelic algae.

Summary Mixed phytoplankton, zooplankton and Thermocyclops hyalinus collected from Fort Moat, at Aligarh (U.P.) India, were analysed for water, nitrogen and phosphorus. Results are generally in agreement with observations of earlier investigators.Phosphorus values are found to be very high. Nutritional condition of zooplankton is noticed to have improved during phytoplankton maxima in the lake.  相似文献

Eradicating or controlling invasive alien species has frequently had unintended consequences, such as proliferation of other invasive species or loss of ecosystem function. We explore this problem using a case study of a highly invasive floating aquatic macrophyte, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta of California. We used 5 years of remote sensing data to perform change detection analysis to study plant community dynamics contemporaneous with changes in water hyacinth cover. Our results show that as water hyacinth cover decreased, submerged aquatic plant (SAP) cover increased and vice versa. This effect was strongest in large patches of water hyacinth. We found no evidence that the native floating aquatic species, pennywort (Hydrocotyle umbellata), benefitted from reducing cover of water hyacinth. In most years, pennywort cover either showed no trend or followed the same trajectory as water hyacinth cover. In this study a decrease in cover of water hyacinth most often resulted in colonization by SAP species with some habitat returning to open water.  相似文献

Studies of the food of introduced Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.) with respect to size, habitat and season were conducted between November 1998 and October 2000 in Kenyan waters of Lake Victoria. Stomach contents of 1980 specimens collected by demersal trawl and seining were analysed. Nile tilapia originally known to be herbivorous, feeding mostly on algae has diversified its diet to include insects, fish, algae and plant materials. The major diet of fish <5 cm total length was zooplankton whereas bigger fish included a wider range of food items in their diet. There was spatial variation in diet with insects and algae dominating in the gulf and open water habitats respectively. There was no seasonal variation in the food items ingested and diel feeding regime indicated that O. niloticus is a diurnal feeder. The shift in diet could be due to ecological and environmental changes in Lake Victoria, which have been associated with changes in composition and diversity of fish and invertebrate fauna, emergence and dominance of different flora including water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms‐Laub., and algae communities. The feeding habit of O. niloticus is discussed in the context of changes occurring in the lake.  相似文献

A field study was conducted during the months of October, January, May, and July (1979–80) to examine the diel variations in dissolved O2 (DO), pH, dissolved CO2, bicarbonate and carbonate alkalinity, NH4-N, NO3-N, and PO4-P concentration, and conductivity (EC) of the water in six aquatic systems. Water in hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) ponds showed very little or no diel or seasonal variations in DO, pH, dissolved CO2, and bicarbonate alkalinity. Dissolved O2 concentration of the water under floating hyacinth cover was in the range of 0.2–3.0 µg/ml, while dissolved CO2 levels were in the range of 10–35 µg/ml. In the aquatic systems with no floating vegetation, i.e., elodea (Egeria densa) pond, cattail (Typha sp.) pond, control pond (filamentous algae and Chara spp.), and eutrophic lake (algae in Lake Apopka), DO and pH of the water increased during mid-day and decreased during the night. Dissolved O2 levels in these ponds were in the range of 5–20 µg/ml during mid-day and 2–8 µg/ml during the night, while pH of the water was in the range of 8–9.5 during mid-day and decreased to 7–8 during the night. An inverse relationship was observed between bicarbonate and carbonate alkalinity of the water in the aquatic systems with no floating vegetation while no carbonates were detected in the water with floating hyacinth plants. Ammonium N, NO3-N and PO4-P concentration of the water in these aquatic systems showed very little or no diel variations.Florida Agricultural Experiment Stations Journal Series No. 2788.  相似文献

Summary Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios in autotrophs, aquatic invertebrates and fishes from the Orinoco River floodplain of Venezuela reveal that microalgae, including both phytoplankton and epiphytic (attached) forms, are predominant energy sources for many aquatic animals, even though aquatic vascular plants are much more abundant. Floating mats of the grass Paspalum repens and the water hyacinth Eichhornia spp. harbor particularly high densities of aquatic animals, but isotopic evidence indicates that few species are dependent on organic carbon originating from these plants. The stable isotopic evidence for the trophic importance of algae contradicts traditional interpretations of food webs in freshwater wetlands, which are generally thought to be based largely on detritus originating from vascular plants.  相似文献

Light climate and phytoplankton photosynthesis in maritime Antarctic lakes   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Ian Hawes 《Hydrobiologia》1985,123(1):69-79
The responses of phytoplankton populations to seasonal changes in radiation flux in two Antarctic lakes with extensive winter ice-cover are described. A phytoplankton capable of photosynthesis was found throughout the year in both systems. During winter, low incident radiation combined with thick layers of snow and ice prevented in situ photosynthesis becoming detectable. The beginning of spring was marked by a reduction in snow cover which resulted in a considerable increase in surface penetrating radiation. Planktonic algae rapidly adapted to utilise these increased levels efficiently, though they still showed characteristics of strong shade adaptation.Loss of ice cover at the start of the short open water period further increased the radiation levels and a summer population developed which was much less shade adapted. Saturation and photoinhibition effects were widespread during this period as the algae proved unable to utilise high radiation levels efficiently. They were however effective at the radiation fluxes prevalent in the lower part of the rapidly circulating water columns.  相似文献

The growth of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms was inhibited when grown in water containing algae such as Scenedesmus bijugatis (Turp.) Kuetz, Chlorella pyrenoidosa Chick and species of Aphanothece, Euglena, Merismopedia and Coelastrum. The size of plants, their dry weight and chlorophyll a and b contents and their rate of vegetative propagation were very much reduced compared with control plants grown in algae-free water. The hyacinth plants ultimately died after 90–100 days of growth with algae.  相似文献

The winter dynamics of several chemical, physical, and biological variables of a shallow, polymictic lake (Opinicon) are compared to those of a deep, nearby dimictic lake (Upper Rock) during ice cover (January to early April) in 1990 and 1991. Both lakes were weakly inversely thermally stratified. Dissolved oxygen concentration was at saturation (11–15 mg l−1) in the top 3 m layer, but declined to near anoxic levels near the sediments. Dissolved oxygen concentrations in the deep lake were at saturation in most of the water column and approached anoxic levels near the sediments only. Nutrient concentrations in both lakes were fairly high, and similar in both lakes during ice cover. Total phosphorus concentrations generally ranged between 10–20 μg l−1, NH4-N between 16–100 μg l−1, and DSi between 0.9–1.9 mg l−1; these concentrations fell within summer ranges. NO3-N concentrations were between 51–135 μg l−1 during ice cover, but occurred at trace concentrations (<0.002 μg l−1) during the summer. The winter phytoplankton community of both lakes was dominated by flagellates (cryptophytes, chrysophytes) and occasionally diatoms. Dinoflagellates, Cyanobacteria and green algae were poorly represented. Cryptophytes often occurred in fairly high proportions (20–80%) throughout the water column, whereas chrysophytes were more abundant just beneath the ice. Zooplankton population densities were extremely low during ice cover (compared to maximum densities measured in spring or summer) in both lakes, and were comprised largely of copepods.  相似文献

Analysis of macrophyte water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) as an organic fertilizer of Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui) larvae in ponds is provided. Water hyacinth produce an organic fertilizer at the ratio of 100 g x m(-2) in tambaqui ponds. Two groups of 5,000 larvae were transferred to two fishponds with and without water hyacinth fertilizer and reared until day 43. The fertilized pond evidenced more plankton abundance during the entire production period when compared with the control pond (P < 0.001). The phytoplankton community in the pond was not significantly different than in gut contents (P > 0.05) in both ponds (with and without organic fertilizer). Fish larvae failed to show any preference or selectivity in relation to the different algae (P > 0.01) in the pond, but exhibited high ingestion selectivity for zooplankton (P < 0.05). Application of fertilizer increased (P < 0.05) the abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the treatment pond. Since water hyacinth fertilizer is quite cheap and easily available, it may be conveniently used to enhance fish yield in ponds.  相似文献

Over a period of four years, the seasonal periodicity of dominant phytoplankton species in a shallow, eutrophic Danish lake changed markedly. Cyanophytes prevailed during the summer period of all four years. In the first three years, species of Microcystis, Anabaena and Aphanothece dominated, whereas in the fourth year of investigation, these algae were replaced by Gloeotrichia echinulata (J. E. Smith) Richter and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs. The most striking environmental differences in the fourth year as compared with the previous three years, were an increase in tranparency, from about 0.5 meter in 1989–1991 to more than 2 metres preceding the summer maximum in 1992, and a simultaneous occurrence of low oxygen concentrations. A collapse of the fish population was followed by an increased proportion of large Cladocerans in the zooplankton. Improved light conditions at the bottom and grazing pressure from large Cladocerans favoured growth of the large colony forming blue-green algae, Gloeotrichia echinulata and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. These species germinate from resting spores in the sediment and are able to sustain some growth there before migration to the lake water. The transfer of algal biomass from the bottom sediment to the water phase was accompanied by a marked increase in concentrations of particulate phosphorus and nitrogen in the entire lake.  相似文献

Rapid pyrolysis of two types of aquatic biomass (blue-green algae and water hyacinth), and their blends with two coals (bituminous and anthracite) was carried out in a high-frequency furnace. Nitrogen conversions during rapid pyrolysis of the two biomass and the interactions between the biomass and coals on nitrogen conversions were investigated. Results show that little nitrogen retained in char after the biomass pyrolysis, and NH3 yields were higher than HCN. During co-pyrolysis of biomass and coal, interactions between biomass and coal decreased char-N yields and increased volatile-N yields, but the total yields of NH3 + HCN in volatile-N were decreased in which HCN formations were decreased consistently, while NH3 formations were only decreased in the high-temperature range but promoted in the low-temperature range. Interactions between blue-green algae and coals are stronger than those between water hyacinth and coal, and interactions between biomass and bituminous are stronger than those between biomass and anthracite.  相似文献

Field and laboratory nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) enrichment experiments were performed using natural phytoplankton and microphytobenthic assemblages from the brackish water Öresund, S.W. Sweden. The response of algae from a low-nutrient area (Falsterbo Canal) was compared to that of algae from a polluted, nutrient-rich area (Lomma Bay). The biomass (measured as chlorophyll a) of both phytoplankton and microphytobenthos from the Falsterbo Canal increased after the addition of nitrogen. Phytoplankton growth was stimulated by the addition of phosphorus to the nitrogen-rich water of the polluted Lomma Bay. Sediment chlorophyll a showed no significant increase after the addition of nutrients in the Lomma Bay. In containers without sediment, phytoplankton uptake was calculated to account for ≈ 90% of the disappearance of inorganic fixed nitrogen from the water. In the sediment containers the microphytobenthos was estimated to account for ≈20% of the nitrogen uptake. The rest was presumably lost mainly through denitrification. When containers with microphytobenthos from Lomma Bay were kept in the dark, phosphorus was released at a rate of up to ≈ 180 μM · m?2 · day?1. We suggest that by producing oxygen microbenthic algae keep the sediment surface oxygenated thereby decreasing phosphorus transport from the sediment to the overlying water.  相似文献

We developed a dynamic model to predict nitrogen removal in water hyacinth ponds (WHPs) receiving effluent from waste stabilization ponds (WSPs). The model is based on the biofilm reaction on the root surface of plant and pond walls. The model consists of mass balances of six main substrates including: particulate organic nitrogen (PON), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), ammonium (NH4+), nitrite and nitrate (NOx), soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), and particulate chemical oxygen demand (PCOD). The model, incorporating major nitrogen transformation mechanisms such as hydrolysis, mineralization, and nitrification–denitrification, accounts also for carbon consumption and plant uptake. The model's application to a pilot plant showed good agreement between measured and predicted values. According to the modeling results, in the WHPs, nitrification and denitrification were the predominant nitrogen removal processes occurring simultaneously. Temperature and hydraulic retention time (HRT) had a profound effect on the performance of nitrogen removal while an algae biomass (PCOD) accumulated in the WHPs, was a useful carbon source for denitrification.  相似文献

Phytoplankton samples were collected from three mesotrophic lakes: Piaseczno, Rogóźno and Krasne during winter seasons (from January to March). The samples were analyzed for species analysis and abundance of planktonic algae in relation to different depths of water column (0–7 m). Selected water physical-chemical parameters were also measured. Abundance of phytoplankton depended strongly on the thickness of snow and ice cover or mixing conditions. The maximal phytoplankton total number reached about 5 × 106 ind. L−1 beneath the clear ice in the Krasne Lake, minimal numbers were recorded under the thick snow and ice layers in the Piaseczno Lake (2 × 103 ind. L−1). The winter phytoplankton communities were dominated by flagellates principally cryptomonads (Cryptomonas spp. Rhodomonas minuta), euglenophytes (Trachelomonas volvocina, T. volvocinopsis), dinoflagellates (Peridinium bipes, Gymnodinium helveticum) and chrysophytes (Mallomonas elongata, M. akrokomos, Dinobryon sociale) or non-motile small species of blue-green algae (e.g. Rhabdoderma lineare, Limnothrix redekei), diatoms (Stephanodiscus spp., Asterionella formosa), and green algae (e.g. Scenedesmus spp., Monoraphidium spp.). Phytoplankton abundance and structure showed differentiation during the winter season and along the water column as well.  相似文献

A study aimed at investigating the temporal variation of phytoplankton assemblages in Lake Nyamusingiri was carried out during the period of December 1997–May 1998. Uganda’s freshwaters are ecologically diverse but a few are intensively studied. Research on phytoplankton has been restricted to large water bodies. There is little information on phytoplankton of the western Uganda crater lakes, which are important water and biodiversity resources. This study provided baseline data on phytoplankton, which will serve as a basis for monitoring the effects of human activities on the lake that might result in ecological transformations like loss of biodiversity because of overexploitation. A laboratory thermometer and Winker’s method were used to determine temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration, respectively. Lake transparency was measured by using the Secchi disc. A Van Dorn sampler was used to collect water samples. Nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations were determined by using facilities at the Fisheries Resources Research Institute (FIRRI), Jinja. The Sedgwick‐Rafter counting chamber was used to analyse phytoplankton. Variation in temperature was small (25.4–26.2°C). Stable thermal stratification was not evident. The Secchi disc transparency was less than unity. The chlorophyll a value was high. Biomass was found to be light‐limited by nonalgal materials. Dissolved oxygen concentration was more than 100% in the surface waters but declined to <20% at the bottom, which reflected the eutrophic nature of the lake. Diversity indices were low. Eighteen species and five classes of phytoplankton were revealed by this study. The phytoplankton flora was dominated by chlorococcal green algae characteristic of the large eutrophic East African lakes.  相似文献

Macrophytes and phytoplankton are recognized as having roles in determining alternative stable states in shallow lakes and reservoirs, while the role of periphyton has been poorly investigated. Temporal and spatial variation of phytoplankton, epipelon and epiphyton was examined in a shallow reservoir with high abundance of aquatic macrophytes. The relationships between algae communities and abiotic factors, macrophyte coverage and zooplankton density were also analyzed. Monthly sampling was performed in three zones of the depth gradient of the reservoir. Two phases of algal dominance were found: a phytoplankton phase and epipelon phase. The phase of phytoplankton dominance was characterized by high macrophyte coverage. Rotifera was the dominant zooplankton group in all the zones. Flagellate algae were dominant in phytoplankton, epipelon and epiphyton. Macrophyte coverage was found to be a predictor for algal biomass. Changes in biomass and species composition were associated with macrophyte cover variation, mainly the Nymphaea. In addition to the abiotic factors, the macrophyte coverage was a determining factor for changes to the algal community, contributing to the alternation between dominance phases of phytoplankton and epipelon. The macrophyte–phytoplankton–periphyton relationship needs to be further known in shallow reservoirs, especially the role of epipelon as an alternate stable state.

Phytoplankton ecology of the Lake of Menteith,Scotland   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The results discussed in this paper represent the first seasonal ecological study carried out on the phytoplankton of the Lake of Menteith. All measured nutrients reached maximum levels during the winter, with silicate showing particularly high concentrations (up to 85 µg at Si l–1). During the summer period phosphate, nitrate and silicate showed almost complete exhaustion in surface waters. The lake water was consistently alkaline, never falling below pH 7, while the alkalinity ranged from 20 to 24 mg CaCO3 l–1. Generally, the nutrient status of the main inflow had a rapid effect on the water quality of the lake. The region of the lake under investigation showed no thermal stratification at any period of the year, although continuous thermal gradients were recorded in the winter. The continual circulation of the water mass probably prevented oxygen saturation from falling below 77% even following a large phytoplankton bloom and subsequent decomposition. From an examination of net phytoplankton samples the Lake of Menteith could be described as blue-green or blue-green/diatom in nature. From the quantitative study, large pulses of Melosira, Asterionella and Fragilaria were recorded in the spring. The disappearance of the species appears to be related to silicate limitation. The summer growth of Asterionella may have been promoted by a nitrogen source other than nitrate and nitrite, both of which were reduced to critical levels. This alternative source of combined nitrogen may have been contributed by nitrogen-fixing algae in the lake. Three species of Anabaena were recorded, all of which produced large populations during the year.Department of Botany, The University of GlasgowPresent Address: Department of Biology, College of Science, University of Sulaimaniyah, Sulaimaniyah, Iraq  相似文献
