Samples from stone surfaces were collected in pools within four unpolluted hillstreams (two shaded and two unshaded) in monsoonal Hong Kong (lat. 23°N) to elucidate the extent of spatial (within and among streams) and temporal (seasonal) variations in algal biomass and assemblage composition. Sampling continued for over 12 months, incorporating the dry season when streams were at baseflow, and the wet season when spates were frequent. We anticipated that algal biomass would be lower in shaded streams and during the wet season, with associated seasonal differences in assemblage composition or relative abundance of different growth forms (e.g. erect versus prostrate). Benthic chlorophyll a (a proxy for algal biomass) varied among streams from an annual mean of 11.0–22.3 mg m−2. Dry-season standing stocks were 18% higher than during the wet season when spate-induced disturbance reduced algal standing stocks. Algal biomass varied significantly at the stream scale, but not at the pool scale, and was lower in unshaded streams, where standing stocks may have been limited by high densities of algivorous balitorid loaches (mainly Pseudogastromyzon myersi). An overriding effect of grazers on algal biomass could also have reduced variations resulting from spate-induced disturbance. Significant differences in assemblage composition among streams, which were dominated by diatoms and cyanobacteria (totally 82 taxa) were not systematically related to shading conditions. Seasonal variations in algal assemblages were statistically significant but rather minor, and did not involve major shifts in composition or growth form caused by spate-induced disturbance. The abundance of filamentous cyanobacteria in all the streams may have been due to ‘gardening’ by balitorid loaches that removed erect or stalked diatoms and favoured cyanobacteria that persist through basal regeneration of filaments. 1. Water abstraction strongly affects streams in arid and semiarid ecosystems, particularly where there is a Mediterranean climate. Excessive abstraction reduces the availability of water for human uses downstream and impairs the capacity of streams to support native biota. 2. We investigated the flow regime and related variables in six river basins of the Iberian Peninsula and show that they have been strongly altered, with declining flows (autoregressive models) and groundwater levels during the 20th century. These streams had lower flows and more frequent droughts than predicted by the official hydrological model used in this region. Three of these rivers were sometimes dry, whereas there were predicted by the model to be permanently flowing. Meanwhile, there has been no decrease in annual precipitation. 3. We also investigated the fish assemblage of a stream in one of these river basins (Tordera) for 6 years and show that sites more affected by water abstraction display significant differences in four fish metrics (catch per unit effort, number of benthic species, number of intolerant species and proportional abundance of intolerant individuals) commonly used to assess the biotic condition of streams. 4. We discuss the utility of these metrics in assessing impacts of water abstraction and point out the need for detailed characterisation of the natural flow regime (and hence drought events) prior to the application of biotic indices in streams severely affected by water abstraction. In particular, in cases of artificially dry streams, it is more appropriate for regulatory agencies to assign index scores that reflect biotic degradation than to assign ‘missing’ scores, as is presently customary in assessments of Iberian streams.  相似文献

1. Small permanent streams are coming under increasing pressure for water abstraction. Although these abstractions might only be required on a short‐term basis (e.g. summer time irrigation), the highest demand for water often coincides with seasonal low flows. 2. We constructed weirs and diversions that reduced discharge in three small streams (<4 m width) to test the hypotheses that short‐term water abstractions would decrease habitat availability and suitability for invertebrates, resulting in increased invertebrate drift, reduced taxonomic richness and decreased benthic invertebrate densities. 3. We sampled benthic invertebrates, invertebrate drift and periphyton at control (upstream) and impact (downstream) sites on each stream before and during 1 month of discharge reduction. 4. Discharge decreased by an average of 89–98% at impact sites and wetted width decreased by 24–30%. Water depth decreased by 28–64% while velocity decreased by 50–62%. Water conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen showed varying responses to flow reduction among the three streams, whereas algal biomass and pH were unaffected in all streams. 5. The densities of invertebrate taxa tended to increase in the impact reaches of these streams, even though invertebrate drift increased at impact sites in the first few days following discharge reduction. There were a higher proportion of mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies at the impact site on one stream after flow reduction. There were no changes to the number of taxa or species evenness at impact sites. 6. Our results suggest that for these small streams, the response of invertebrates to short‐term discharge reduction was to accumulate in the decreased available area, increasing local invertebrate density.  相似文献

As a result of ozone depletion, ground doses of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation in the mid latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere have increased since the 1980s, and current predictions indicate no possible alleviation until at least post 2020. Mudflats and sandflats are important coastal-zone habitats, and support extensive biofilms of benthic microalgae (microphytobenthos). In intertidal situations, these assemblages are exposed to high levels of UVB radiation during periods of tidal exposure. Exposure of intertidal biofilms dominated by epipelic (mud-inhabiting) diatoms to 0, 0.18 or 0.35 W m−2 UVB radiation for between 4 and 10 days resulted in no significant decreases in the maximum PSII quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) throughout diel exposure periods. Although the quantum efficiency of electron transport (Fq′/Fm′) showed significant reductions early in some experiments, the major response was an increase in Fq′/Fm′ in UVB exposed biofilms. This increase in Fq′/Fm′ was suggestive of a protective vertical migration down into the sediment. Single-cell and whole biofilm fluorescence imaging demonstrated, for the first time, that motile diatoms are able to detect UVB radiation independently of UVA or photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and migrate rapidly down (within 15 min) into the sediments to avoid it. This behavioural acclimation mechanism appears to prevent significant accumulation of UVB induced damage to the algae. UVB exposure had no significant effect of biofilm photosynthesis (measured by 14C carbon fixation), but did alter organic carbon allocation patterns, with significantly less new carbon allocated to intracellular storage (glucan) and extracellular colloidal carbohydrate fractions. Significant reductions in the sediment standing stocks of chlorophyll a (Chl a), colloidal carbohydrates, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were seen after 7 days of UVB exposure. This study showed that marine intertidal benthic diatoms use a behavioural strategy to avoid exposure to UVB and that this response is effective as a short-term protection mechanism against UVB damage. However, altered carbon allocation patterns feed forward over time into changes in biofilm biomass and sediment carbohydrate dynamics. This suggests that continual long-term exposure to UVB may impact on sediment carbon cycling and trophic interactions and on the stabilization of sediments by microalgal biofilms through their production of extracellular carbohydrates.  相似文献

The secondary metabolites of three sponges collected as bycatch in the fishing nets were explored for biological potencies. The sponge Dendrilla nigraexhibited wider biological activity. It showed potent activity in antibacterial, brineshrimp cytotoxicity, larvicidal, antifouling and ichthyotoxic assays. One of the well-studied cytotoxic sponge Axinella donnaniwas least active in brineshrimp cytotoxicity assay. The secondary metabolites of Clathria gorgonoideswere highly cytotoxic albeit it showed least activity in other bioassays. Based on the present findings, it could be inferred that the bioassay-guided fractionation and purification of D. nigramay come up with potent bioactive drugs. %  相似文献

In the current study, we investigated the primary succession of seaweeds over different time periods at different water depths. Furthermore, we followed the succession of field-grown benthic communities of different successional age, developing on ceramic tiles, prior to and after transplantation from 8 to 0.5 m water depth. The transplantation simulated changes associated with the break up of sea-ice cover, e.g. light regime or wave exposure. For this purpose, we transplanted 12 and 21-month old communities, grown at 8 m water depth, together with a set of sterile tiles, onto rafts, floating in 0.5 m water depth. Our results describe for the first time the succession of macroalgal communities in the Arctic and give important insights into the effect of disturbance of differently aged communities. The primary succession at 0.5 m water depth was mainly driven by Bacillariophyta and filamentous green algae like Urospora sp. and Ulothrix implexa. Twelve-month old communities at 8 m water depth are dominated by members of the Ectocarpales (Phaeophyceae), like Pylaiella littoralis, P. varia, and Ectocarpus siliculosus and the green alga U. implexa, whereas the 21-month old community showed a higher cover of the green algal class Ulvophyceae and sessile invertebrates. After transplantation to near surface conditions, species composition of the communities changed, but this effect was differently strong between communities of different age.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of water extraction and flow regime on leaf litter breakdown in 10 Hong Kong streams experiencing varying degrees of extraction: five with severe extraction (>85% downstream flow removed), four with moderate extraction (20–85% removed), and one without extraction (~0% removed). Breakdown rates, macroinvertebrate assemblages and nutrients were compared in upstream (reference) reaches and downstream reaches with reduced flow in each stream during high-flow (wet season) and low-flow (dry season) conditions to determine whether responses to flow were influenced by Hong Kong’s monsoonal climate. Litter breakdown was slower in downstream reaches during the wet season, and discharge was the main determinant of breakdown rate in both reaches across the 10 study streams. In contrast, inter-reach differences in breakdown during the dry season were small and unrelated to flow. Instead, breakdown rates among streams were influenced by the abundance of detritivorous shredders and chironomids (Chironominae), as well as phosphate concentrations, indicating the importance of biological processing of litter under low-flow conditions. Although litter breakdown rates appear to offer a promising functional indicator of flow-reduction impacts during the wet season, the pattern seen reflected the physical effects of flow rather than any underlying biological processes, and the lack of response to flow reduction during the dry season was notable.  相似文献

The benthic macroinvertebrate communities of four Hong Kong streams with similar water chemistry but differing riparian conditions were investigated. Differences in chlorophylls and detritus standing stocks reflected the degree of shading by riparian vegetation; Tai Po Kau Forest Stream (TPKFS) and Bride's Pool (BP) had an allochthonous food base while autochthonous energy sources were relatively more important in Lam Tsuen River (LTR) and Pui O Stream (POS). The macrobenthos was dominated by aquatic insects and morphospecies richness (excluding Chironomidac) ranged from 70 (POS) to 94 (TPKFS). Differences in total macroinvertebrate abundance across sites were not related to chlorophylls or detritus.
Highly significant differences in the morphospecies comprising the most numerous taxa at each site were observed, and TPKS and BP were more similar to each other than to the LTR-POS pair with respect to top-ranked taxa. Intraspecific comparisons of the abundance of these taxa revealed significant differences for 23 out of 30 morphospecies. Multiple regression of the abundance of key morphospecies against independent variables (chlorophylls a , b and c , total chlorophyll and detritus) yielded significant best-fit models for all taxa showing intersite differences in abundance. These data can be interpreted as reflecting the influence of riparian vegetation on stream community structure via an effect on food supply. The results were discussed with reference to the applicability of the River Continuum Concept in the tropics.  相似文献

1. Gut content analyses (GCA) of benthic macroinvertebrates, supplemented by carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses (SIA), were used to determine the relative contribution of leaf litter and autochthonous food sources to consumer biomass in five shaded and five unshaded streams in tropical Hong Kong. 2. Only four obligate shredders and two facultative shredders were identified out of 58 morphospecies dissected. Non‐shredder taxa consumed little (<23% food eaten) coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) in spite of its abundance in streams, and GCA revealed that fine particulate organic matter was the major food (25–99%) of most primary consumers. 3. Stable isotope analysis results were in general agreement with the findings of GCA, and confirmed that three of the four obligate shredders had a high dependence (55–78% of assimilated carbon) on CPOM. 4. Autochthonous energy sources were important in all streams: non‐shredding primary consumers examined, which accounted for 72% of total macroinvertebrate abundance in shaded streams, derived (on average) 61% of their biomass from autochthonous foods; the equivalent values for unshaded streams were 72% (abundance) and 71% (biomass).  相似文献

The pattern of psychiatric consultation in Hong Kong is examined among 226 patients at a public outpatient clinic and 56 patients at a private psychiatric clinic. The approach to psychiatric services is marked by lengthy delay during which patients get help from their family members or close friends. Arrival at the present psychiatric clinic was diverted through other medical resources, primarily Western-style medical services, and to some extent, traditional Chinese medicine. Individual routes were diverse, characterized by frequent switches among resources especially in the private sector. The nature of the patients' presenting complaints as well as the conceptualization of their initial complaints were multi-faceted, including both psychological and somatic factors. The overall consultation pattern of patients in Hong Kong is compared with other studies on Chinese and Western patients. The role of ballast water in the introduction of exotic species has recently received extensive attention. The aim of this study is to assess the importance of ballast water discharge as a vector for the introduction of exotic species into Hong Kong waters. Twelve ballast water samples were collected from 5 container ships entering Hong Kong between June1994 and October 1995. The ballast water originated from ports on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. At least 81 species from 8 animal phyla and 5 protist phyla were found. Most of the major marine taxonomic groups were represented and many planktonic larval stages were included. Species richness in the ballast tanks decreased with the age of ballast water. Copepoda was the most diverse and abundant taxonomic group. The density of calanoid and cyclopoid copepods decreased with the age of ballast water, but that of harpacticoid copepods did not change significantly with time. Bivalve, crustacean, polychaete and ascidian larvae from ballast water samples were observed to settle in laboratory culture tanks. The mussel Mytilopsis sallei which was introduced to Hong Kong in 1980, was one of the bivalves that settled readily. Results of this study indicate that ballast water can be a major source for the introduction of exotic species to Hong Kong waters. Regulatory guidelines on the discharge of ballast water should be established. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

1. Manipulative experiments were carried out in four Hong Kong streams (two shaded, two unshaded) to investigate the impact of grazing by an algivorous fish, Pseudogastromyzon myersi, on benthic algal biomass and assemblage composition. Experiments were conducted and repeated during both the dry and wet seasons to determine whether spate‐induced disturbance modified any grazing effect. Treatments comprised fish exclusion and inclusion via closed and open cages, with a no‐cage treatment used as a control for the cage effect. Treatments were maintained for 4 weeks in each experimental run. 2. Grazing by P. myersi reduced benthic algal biomass and the organic matter content of periphyton in open cages and the no‐cage treatment relative to closed cages. The similarity between open‐cage and no‐cage treatments was evidence that the overall difference among treatments was caused by limiting fish access to closed cages and not merely an artifact of caging. Grazing effects were broadly similar in all streams, but there was a significant statistical interaction between treatments and seasons. 3. Analysis of dry‐season data matched the overall trend in inter‐treatment differences, confirming the effects of grazing by P. myersi on algal biomass and periphyton organic matter. Significant differences in algal assemblage composition between closed‐cage and no‐cage treatments during the dry season reflected reductions in the abundance of erect, stalked diatoms (Gomphonema) and filamentous cyanobacteria (Homeothrix). Removal of these vulnerable overstorey algae by P. myersi resulted in greater abundance of understorey diatoms (Achnanthes and Cocconeis) in the no‐cage treatment in all streams during the dry season. The composition of algal assemblages in open cages was intermediate between the other two treatments. 4. Although fish densities were greater in all streams during the wet season, spate‐induced disturbance obscured grazing effects and there were no significant differences among treatments attributable to fish grazing. Seasonal variation in impacts of P. myersi grazing provides support for the harsh‐benign hypothesis, and confirms that biotic factors are less important controls of stream algal biomass and assemblage structure during periods (i.e. the wet season in Hong Kong) when abiotic disturbances are frequent or intense.  相似文献

The effects of depth-related differences in environmental factors (pressure, hydrography, habitat and disturbance) on the benthic megafauna at the mouth of Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord in Arctic Greenland were investigated using a towed camera platform and autonomous underwater vehicle photographs. Large reductions in faunal density (60,132 to 1881 individuals ha-1) and increases in diversity (H'=0.93-2.54), through increases in richness (ES(220)=7.6-18.8) and reductions in dominance (Berger-Parker index=0.77-0.38) were found between 270 and 720 m water depth. Assemblages were separated into distinct shallow, intermediate and deep faunas by multivariate community analysis. In the shallower sites there were high levels of iceberg disturbance, directly reducing diversity as well as creating a complex, patchy environment inhabited by high densities of mobile suspension-feeding epifauna. In the deeper areas there was small-scale disturbance from the deposition of drop stones, but at a relatively low frequency and magnitude, which allowed increased species diversity. Proportions of deposit-feeding epifaunal and infaunal taxa rose with depth, as indicated by an increase with depth in faunal traces. Decreases in faunal density probably resulted from decreased food supply with depth.  相似文献

Corticolous ascomycetes form a component of the biodiversity in the tropics that has been neglected until now.
