The experimental results on the formation and development of initial stages of an impulse breakdown in atmospheric-pressure argon at townsend and streamer breakdown mechanisms for different initial conditions are presented. A streamer channel is shown to be initiated by bright luminescence formed at the point of critical avalanche amplification at different distances from the cathode depending on overvoltage. Prebreakdown currents are experimentally measured for the townsend and streamer breakdown mechanisms and peculiarities of spark channel formation for these mechanisms are studied.  相似文献

Since the threshold electric field required for breakdown of air is much higher than the maximum field strength measured in thunderstorm clouds, the problem of lightning initiation still remains unsolved. According to the popular hypothesis, lightning can be initiated by a streamer discharge in the field enhanced near a hydrometeor. To verify the adequacy of this hypothesis, the development of a positive streamer propagating along the thunderstorm electric field in the vicinity of an ice needle at an air pressure corresponding to an altitude of 5 km (which is typical of the lightning initiation conditions) was simulated numerically. The hydrometeor dimensions are determined at which streamers can be initiated at different strengths of the thunderstorm electric field.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of ac corona discharges between a point electrode and a dielectric-coated plate in nitrogen, argon, helium, and air in the voltage frequency range f=50 Hz–50 kHz. The characteristic features of this type of discharge are compared with the well-known features of dc positive and negative coronas and a barrier discharge between plane electrodes. It is shown that the presence of a dielectric barrier on the plane electrode significantly changes the electric characteristics and spatial structure of the corona, whereas the main phases of the discharge evolution remain unchanged as the voltage increases. With a point electrode, the breakdown voltage of the barrier corona decreases substantially as compared to the breakdown voltage of a barrier discharge with plane electrodes. This leads to softer conditions for the streamer formation in a barrier corona, which becomes more stable against spark generation.  相似文献

Two-dimensional numerical simulations of streamer development in a surface dielectric barrier discharge excited by a voltage pulse with a duration of 30–50 ns in atmospheric air show that the streamer propagation velocity is mainly governed by the velocity of potential diffusion along streamer channels. The calculated streamer length substantially exceeds the experimentally observed one due to the long-term conservation of the conductivity of these channels. A hypothesis on the three-dimensional character of the decay of the surface streamer channel is proposed. The model account of this effect in two-dimensional simulations reduces the calculated time of streamer development and the calculated streamer length to the experimentally observed values.  相似文献

The formation times of self-sustained subnanosecond discharges in nitrogen at pressures of 1?40 atm and in hydrogen at pressures of 1–60 atm are analyzed in terms of the avalanche model. In experiments, a subnanosecond voltage pulse with an amplitude of 102 ± 2 kV was applied to a 0.5-mm-long discharge gap with a uniformly distributed electric field (the curvature radii of both the cathode and anode ends were 1 cm). The rise time of the voltage pulse from 0.1 to 0.9 of its amplitude value was about 250 ps. Breakdown occurred at the leading edge of the pulse. The discharge formation time was measured at different gas pressures with a step of 5–10 atm. Analysis of the experimental results shows that, in nitrogen at pressures of 10–40 atm and in hydrogen at pressures of 20–50 atm, breakdown occurs earlier than the electron avalanche reaches its critical length and that the critical avalanche length lies in the range of (2–8) × 10–2 mm, which is one order of magnitude shorter than the discharge gap length. This means that the avalanche–streamer model is inapplicable in this case. The fast formation of a conducting channel under these conditions can be explained by ionization of gas by runaway electrons. In this case, the conducting column develops as a result of simultaneous development of a large number of electron avalanches in the gas volume. An increase in the hydrogen pressure from 50 to 60 atm leads to an abrupt increase in the discharge formation time by about 50%. As a result, the growth time of the electron avalanche to its critical length becomes shorter than the discharge formation time. In this case, the electrons cease to pass into the runaway regime and the discharge is initiated from the cathode due to field emission from microinhomogeneities on its surface. Under these conditions, the discharge formation time is well described by the avalanche–streamer model.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of cathode-directed streamers in the gap closure regime without a transition into spark breakdown. Spatiotemporal, electrodynamic, and spectroscopic characteristics of streamer discharges in air at different pressures were studied. Similarity laws for streamer discharges were formulated. These laws allow one to compare the discharge current characteristics and streamer propagation dynamics at different pressures. Substantial influence of gas photoionization on the deviations from the similarity laws was revealed. The existence of a pressure range in which the discharges develop in a similar way was demonstrated experimentally. In particular, for fixed values of the product pd and discharge voltage U, the average streamer velocity is also fixed. It is found that, although the similarity laws are violated in the interstreamer pause of the discharge, the average discharge current and the product of the pressure and the streamer repetition period remain the same at different pressures. The radiation spectra of the second positive system of nitrogen (the C3Π u -B3Π g transitions) in a wavelength range of 300–400 nm at air pressures of 1–3 atm were recorded. It is shown that, in the entire pressure range under study, the profiles of the observed radiation bands practically remain unchanged and the relative intensities of the spectral lines corresponding to the 3Π u -B3Π g transitions are preserved.  相似文献

The delay time to breakdown of a cold-cathode thyratron with a trigger unit based on an auxiliary steady-state low-current glow discharge was studied experimentally. The device was connected into the electric circuit according to the circuit of a classical thyratron. The main experiments were carried out at low working gas (deuterium) pressures and high anode voltages of about 40 kV. It is found that, during the triggering current pulse or commutation of the main discharge current, the auxiliary discharge in the trigger unit passes from the stable segment of the current-voltage characteristic into the regime with a reduced operating voltage. Spontaneous reverse transitions from this regime are also possible. On the other hand, the initial conditions of the auxiliary discharge affect the delay time to thyratron breakdown and lead to the jitter in the total delay time to breakdown relative to the triggering pulse. The total delay time amounts to 100 ns, the jitter in delay time being within 15 ns.  相似文献

New types of beam-plasma devices generating intense stochastic microwave radiation in the interaction of electron beams with hybrid plasma waveguides were developed and put into operation at the National Science Center Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology (Ukraine). The objective of the paper is to discuss the results of theoretical and experimental studies and numerical simulations of the normal and oblique incidence of linearly polarized electromagnetic waves on an interface between a vacuum and an overcritical plasma. The main results of the reported investigations are as follows: (i) for the parameter values under analysis, the transmission coefficient for microwaves with a stochastically jumping phase is one order of magnitude greater than that for a broadband regular electromagnetic wave with the same spectral density; (ii) the electrons are heated most efficiently by obliquely incident waves with a stochastically jumping phase and, in addition, the electron distribution function has a high-energy tail; and (iii) necessary conditions for gas breakdown and for the initiation of a microwave discharge in stochastic fields in a light source are determined. The anomalously large transmission coefficient for microwaves, the anomalous character of the breakdown conditions, the anomalous behavior of microwave gas discharges, and the anomalous nature of collisionless electron heating, are attributed to stochastic jumps in the phase of microwave radiation.  相似文献

The development of a surface barrier discharge in air at atmospheric pressure under the action of a constant voltage of different polarity is simulated numerically. When the polarity of the high-voltage electrode is negative, the discharge develops as an ionization wave that moves along the dielectric surface. When the polarity is positive, the discharge develops as a streamer that first moves above the dielectric surface and then comes into contact with and continues to develop along it. In the case of a high-voltage electrode of positive polarity, the discharge zone above the dielectric surface is approximately five times thicker than that in the case of negative polarity. The characteristic aspects of numerical simulation of the streamer phase of a surface barrier discharge are discussed. The numerical results on the density of the charge stored at the dielectric surface and on the length of the discharge zone agree with the experimental data.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental and computational studies of a subnanosecond breakdown of atmospheric-pressure air in a nonuniform electric field. It is shown that the ionization waves (streamers) formed in the prebreakdown stage have a nearly spherical or conical shape. The diameter of the streamer in its widest part is found to increase with increasing voltage and discharge gap length. For a rise time of the voltage pulse of ≈0.5 ns and its amplitude of ≈250 kV, streamers about 8 cm in diameter were observed in a 7-cm-long gap.  相似文献

The dendritic structure of streamer channels in a corona discharge is described by using fractal theory. It is found that, for a needle-plane discharge, the fractal dimension of the plasma structure is D = 2.16 ± 0.05. The computed spatial distributions of the branching ratios are compared with the available experimental data. The influence of the branching processes on the distribution of chemically active radicals in streamer corona discharges is studied.  相似文献

Results of experimental studies and numerical simulations of physicochemical characteristics of plasmas generated in different types of atmospheric-pressure discharges (pulsed streamer corona, gliding electric arc, dielectric barrier discharge, glow-discharge electrolysis, diaphragmatic discharge, and dc glow discharge) used to initiate various chemical processes in water solutions are analyzed. Typical reactor designs are considered. Data on the power supply characteristics, plasma electron parameters, gas temperatures, and densities of active particles in different types of discharges excited in different gases and their dependences on the external parameters of discharges are presented. The chemical composition of active particles formed in water is described. Possible mechanisms of production and loss of plasma particles are discussed.  相似文献

The emission spectroscopy technique is used to analyze a cathode-directed streamer discharge in air at atmospheric pressure in point-plane geometry at interelectrode distances of up to 100 mm and a high-voltage pulse amplitude of 18 kV. The densities of molecules in the N2(C 3Πu, v=0), N 2 + (B 2Σ u + , v=0) and NO(A 2Σ+, v=0) states are determined, and the reduced electric field in the streamer head is estimated. It is shown that the increase in the average electric field in the discharge gap substantially intensifies the production of active particles in the discharge plasma and makes the plasma more homogeneous. This effect is only related to the increase in the fraction of regions with a high electric field in the discharge gap and, as a result, the reduction of the discharge energy losses via rapidly thermalized degrees of freedom. The active particles are only produced in the streamer head, including the case in which the interelectrode gap is bridged by the streamer channel.  相似文献

Experimental data on the spatial structure of a single-pulse sliding discharge in neon at voltages below, equal to, and above the threshold for spark breakdown are discussed. The experiments were carried at gas pressures of 30 and 100 kPa and different polarities of the discharge voltage. Photographs of the plasma structure in two discharge chambers with different dimensions of the discharge zone and different thicknesses of an alumina dielectric plate on the surface of which the discharge develops are inspected. Common features of the prebreakdown discharge and its specific features depending on the voltage polarity and gas pressure are analyzed. It is shown that, at voltages below the threshold for spark breakdown, a low-current glow discharge with cathode and anode spots develops in the electrode gap. Above the breakdown threshold, regardless of the voltage polarity, spark channels directed from the cathode to the anode develop against the background of a low-current discharge.  相似文献

The characteristics of the initial stage of the formation of the positive column of a glow discharge in nitrogen at reduced pressures are studied experimentally and numerically. A dip in the plasma emission intensity in the initial stage of the discharge (the so-called “dark phase”) is observed experimentally at the positive polarity of the high-voltage electrode (the cathode is grounded). The dark phase is preceded by an ionization wave (IW). When the anode is grounded, neither an IW nor a dip in the discharge emission intensity are observed. A theoretical model capable of describing the discharge development under the actual experimental conditions is constructed. It is shown that the dark phase effect may be caused by the high electron density (above the steady-state one) produced in the gas during the passage of the IW across the discharge gap. This mechanism of the dark phase formation differs from the mechanism proposed earlier to explain a similar effect in noble gases. Additional experiments carried out with pure argon, helium, and helium with a nitrogen admixture have shown that, in the case of a grounded cathode, gas breakdown is also accompanied by the passage of an IW, whereas in the case of a grounded anode, no IW is observed; however, the dark phase is present in both cases. It is shown using computer simulations that, in nitrogen (in contrast to noble gases), the mechanism resulting in the dark phase effect does not operate in the absence of an IW.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the structure of an ac surface discharge excited by a metal needle over a plane dielectric surface. A barrier corona discharge was ignited in atmospheric-pressure argon at frequencies of the applied sinusoidal voltage from 50 Hz to 30 kHz. In experiments, the area of a dielectric covered with the discharge plasma increased with applied voltage. The discharge structure in diffuse and streamer modes was recorded using a digital camera and a high-speed image tube operating in a frame mode. It is found that, in the positive and negative half-periods of the applied voltage, the structure of the surface discharge is substantially different. The statistical characteristics of the branching surface streamers in the positive and negative half-periods are determined as functions of the voltage frequency. The most intense lines in the emission spectrum of the barrier corona are determined for both half-periods. The correlation between the dynamics of the emission intensity and the dynamics of the discharge current and voltage is investigated.  相似文献

High-voltage discharge initiated in air by a plasma filament produced by an intense femtosecond laser pulse was studied experimentally. It is found that the threshold of a laser-induced discharge decrease three-fold as compared to that of a discharge in undisturbed air. It is shown that the formation time of a laser-induced discharge decreases by almost three orders of magnitude as the applied voltage increases by a factor of 2. A numerical model of the discharge process is developed that adequately describes the experimental results. In particular, simulations reproduce the experimentally observed steep dependence of the formation time of a laser-induced discharge on the applied voltage, as well as typical values of the electric field required for such a breakdown.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of a steady-state negative point-to-plane corona in atmospheric-pressure nitrogen at anomalously high (milliampere) currents. The evolution of the corona glow with increasing discharge current is traced up to the corona conversion into a spark. It was found that the structure and current-voltage characteristic of the corona change significantly when the working gas is slowly blown trough the discharge cell. It is shown that, starting from a current of I≥0.5 mA, a negative corona in a nitrogen flow acts as a streamer corona, whereas there are no streamers in the absence of gas blowing. In contrast to the quadratic dependence of the current versus voltage in a low-current corona, the current-voltage characteristic of a high-current corona is linear. The time evolution of the radial profile of the current density at the anode is studied under different experimental conditions.  相似文献

Investigations of high-voltage open discharge in helium have shown a possibility of generation of current pulses with subnanosecond front rise, due to ultra-fast breakdown development. The open discharge is ignited between two planar cathodes with mesh anode in the middle between them. For gas pressure 6 Torr and 20 kV applied voltage, the rate of current rise reaches 500 A/(cm2 ns) for current density 200 A/cm2 and more. The time of breakdown development was measured for different helium pressures and a kinetic model of breakdown in open discharge is presented, based on elementary reactions for electrons, ions and fast atoms. The model also includes various cathode emission processes due to cathode bombardment by ions, fast atoms, electrons and photons of resonant radiation with Doppler shift of frequency. It is shown, that the dominating emission processes depend on the evolution of the discharge voltage during the breakdown. In the simulations, two cases of voltage behavior were considered: (i) the voltage is kept constant during the breakdown; (ii) the voltage is reduced with the growth of current. For the first case, the exponentially growing current is maintained due to photoemission by the resonant photons with Doppler-shifted frequency. For the second case, the dominating factor of current growth is the secondary electron emission. In both cases, the subnanosecond rise of discharge current was obtained. Also the effect of gas pressure on breakdown development was considered. It was found that for 20 Torr gas pressure the time of current rise decreases to 0.1 ns, which is in agreement with experimental data.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the prebreakdown stage of a discharge in nitrogen at pressures of a few tens of atmospheres, gap voltages higher than 140 kV, and a voltage rise time of about 1 ns. Breakdown occurs at the front of the voltage pulse; i.e., the time of breakdown formation is shorter than the front duration. It is shown that, in gaps with a nonuniform electric field, the breakdown formation time is mainly determined by the time of avalanche development to the critical number of charge carriers. The subsequent stages of breakdown (the development of the ionization wave and the buildup of the conductivity in the weakly conducting channel bridging the gap) turn out to be shorter than this time or comparable to it.  相似文献
