Background  

Since the 1980s, a high EEG abnormality rate has been reported for patients with panic disorder. However, how the EEG abnormalities of panic disorder patients are related to the clinical features and pathology of these patients has yet to be clarified. Background  

In the mouse, culture of embryonic stem (ES) cells may decrease their pluripotency and give rise to foetal abnormalities in recipient embryos. These abnormalities are frequently associated with both, chromosome abnormalities or epigenetic alteration of imprinting genes; however, little is known about the epigenetic stability of endogenous retrotransposable elements (REs). In our laboratory, we came across a R1 ES cell line, which at passage 27, lost the ability of germline transmission and started inducing the kinky tail phenotype in all chimeric animals produced with it.  相似文献

Purpose

V/P-SPECT lung scan can be combined with computerized tomography (CT) from hybrid camera. We investigated if CT data could be use only with perfusion scans for the diagnosis of acute pulmonary embolism (PE).

Patients and methods

In a retrospective study, 75 consecutives patients, referred for suspicion of PE, underwent SPECT ventilation and perfusion scans coupled with a CT on Symbia T2. The perfusion images (P-SPECT) were classified as normal or abnormal with systematized (segmental and sub-segmental) or not systematized perfusion abnormalities. The ventilation images (V-SPECT) were considered as normal or abnormal in light of perfusion defects. The same was done for CT images. Correlations between V-SPECT and CT were studied.

Results

Hence, 28 patients had a normal P-SPECT and did not have PE. Patients (47) had an abnormal P-SPECT (among them, 16 turned out to have PE and 31 did not). There were 192 perfusion abnormalities of which 81 were segmental and 81 sub-segmental. Corresponding to these abnormalities, V-SPECT and CT were concordant in 83 % of the cases. When not-concordant, V-SPECT abnormalities with normal CT were found in 14 % of the cases and CT abnormalities with normal V-SPECT were found in 3 % of the cases. According to the EANM guidelines for PE diagnosis, sensitivity was 88 % and specificity 93 % with V/P-SPECT and 100 % and 83 % respectively with CT/P-SPECT (p = NS).

Conclusion

V/P-SPECT remains slightly more specific for the diagnosis of PE. However, this study demonstrates that CT/P-SPECT obtained with hybrid camera could be used for PE diagnosis with performances similar to V/P-SPECT. If these results would be confirmed on larger populations, this could lead to a significant reduction of scanning time which would improve patient comfort and reduce the camera load.  相似文献

Background  

Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative disorders that accompany an accumulation of the disease-associated form(s) of prion protein (PrPSc) in the central nervous system. The neuropathological changes in the brain begin with focal deposits of PrPSc, followed by pathomorphological abnormalities of axon terminal degeneration, synaptic loss, atrophy of dendritic trees, and eventual neuronal cell death in the lesions. Aims

To develop test methods and evaluate the survival of Bacillus anthracis ?Sterne and Bacillus thuringiensis Al Hakam spores after exposure to hot, humid air.

Methods and Results

Spores (>7 logs) of both strains were dried on six different test materials. Response surface methodology was employed to identify the limits of spore survival at optimal test combinations of temperature (60, 68, 77°C), relative humidity (60, 75, 90%) and time (1, 4, 7 days). No spores survived the harshest test run (77°C, 90% r.h., 7 days), while > 6·5 logs of spores survived the mildest test run (60°C, 60% r.h., 1 day). Spores of both strains inoculated on nylon webbing and polypropylene had greater survival rates at 68°C, 75% r.h., 4 days than spores on other materials. Electron microscopy showed no obvious physical damage to spores using hot, humid air, which contrasted with pH‐adjusted bleach decontamination.

Conclusions

Test methods were developed to show that hot, humid air effectively inactivates B. anthracis ?Sterne and B. thuringiensis Al Hakam spores with similar kinetics.

Significance and Impact of the Study

Hot, humid air is a potential alternative to conventional chemical decontamination.  相似文献

Background  

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a disorder characterized by a variety of disabilities, including cognitive deficits, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism, and other socio-emotional problems. It is hypothesized that the absence of the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) leads to higher levels of matrix metallo-proteinase-9 activity (MMP-9) in the brain. Minocycline inhibits MMP-9 activity, and alleviates behavioural and synapse abnormalities in fmr1 knockout mice, an established model for FXS. The etiology and pathophysiology of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) remain inchoate. Attempts to elucidate the pathophysiology must consider sleep physiology, as unrefreshing sleep is the most commonly reported of the 8 case-defining symptoms of CFS.
