Waste biomass Sargassum sp. biosorbed 100% of Cd2+ and 99.4% of Zn2+ from a 3 and 98 mg l–1 solution (pH 4.5), respectively, at the end of four serial experiments. Of the five desorbents studied in consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles, CaCl2 0.05 M eluted nearly 40% of both metals and decreased the biosorption in only 8% and 17% of Cd2+ and Zn2+, respectively. Although NaOH desorbent improved the heavy metal uptake from the second cycle onwards, it did not elute metals from the pre-loaded biomass.  相似文献

Biosorption of copper by Sargassum fluitans biomass in fixed-bed column   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary The behavior of native and protonated Sargassum fluitans seaweed biomass packed in a fixed-bed was examined during a continuous removal of Cu2+ from 35 mg/L aqueous solution at pH 5.0. The capacity of native and protonated biomass, based on the dry weight of the native biomass, were determined to be 61.5 and 54.1 mg/g, respectively. During the saturation of the native biomass with heavy metal, first Na+ and K+, followed by Mg2+ and Ca2+, were eluted from the fixed-bed before the breakthrough time of the Cu2+. The pressure drop across the column varied with the ionic composition of the effluent from the bed, yielding an average permeability coefficient of 2.7 .10-12m2. The void fraction of the interstices in the bed was estimated to be 0.27. No light metals were eluted from the column containing protonated biomass, and the pressure drop remained constant throughout the saturation.  相似文献

Three by-products of fermentations containing Bacillus lentus, Aspergillus oryzae or Saccharomyces cerevisiae biomass were tested for the capacity to absorb Cu, Cd and Zn. The composition of the three biomasses was first determined and showed high contents of ashes in both B. lentus and A. oryzae biomass and high amounts of lipids in the bacterial biomass. Metal ion binding experiments were performed by contact of 0.1 g of biomass (protonated for all the metal tests and not protonated only for the Cd test) with 50 ml of solutions containing each of the metals in the concentration range from 10 to 500 mg/ml, at pH 4.5, 3.5 and 2.5. The final metal ion concentrations were determined using a plasma absorption spectrometer, and the metal removal levels for isotherm plots were determined using the Langmuir model. The results showed that B. lentus protonated biomass had the best sorption capacity for Cu and Cd, followed by protonated A. oryzae and S. cerevisiae biomass. The sorption of Zn was low for all tested biomasses, as also was the binding of all metals at acidic pH (2.5 and 3.5). A significant increase in Cd sorption was obtained using non-protonated biomass from B. lentus and A. oryzae.  相似文献

The biosorption and desorption of Cr, Cu and Al were carried out using brown marine algaeSargassum fluitans biomass, known as the good biosorbent of heavy metals. The content of alginate bound to light metals could be changed by physical and chemical pretreatment. The maximum uptake of Cr, Cu and Al was independent of the alginate content. The maximum uptake of Al was two times(mole basis) than those of Cu and Cr. The aluminum-alginate complex was found in the sorption solution of raw and protonated biomass. Most of Cu, Al and light metals sorbed in the biomass were eluted at pH 1.1. However, only 5 to 10% of Cr sorbed was eluted at pH 1.1. The stoichometric ion exchange between Cu and Ca ion was observed on Cu biosorption with Ca-loaded biomass. A part of Cr ion was bound to biomass as Cr(OH)2 + or Cr(OH)2+. Al was also bound to biomass as multi-valence ion and interfered with the desorbed Ca ion. The behavior of rawS. fluitans in ten consecutive sorption-desorption cycles has been investigated in a packed bed flow-through-column during a continuous removal of copper from a 35 mg/L aqueous solution at pH 5. The eluant used was a 1%(w/v) CaCl/HCl solution at pH3.  相似文献

This paper provides information on biosorption of Cu, Zn and Cd by Microcystis sp. in single, bi and trimetallic combination. Highest biosorption of Cu followed by Zn and Cd in single as well as in mixtures containing two or three metals was noticed. The order of inhibition of Cu, Zn and Cd biosorption in bi and trimetallic combinations was suggestive of screening or competition for the binding sites on the cell surface. This observation was reconfirmed by Freundlich adsorption isotherm. Kf values were maximum for Cu (Kf=45.18), followed by Zn (Kf=16.71), and Cd (Kf=15.63) in single metallic system. The Kf values for each test metal was reduced in solution containing more than one metal. Further, the reduction in biosorption of each metal ion due to presence of other metal ion was of greater magnitude at relatively higher concentrations of interfering metal ion. The biosorption of Cu at saturation was less affected when secondary metal (Cd or Zn) was added in the medium. Above results suggest that Microcystis holds great potential for metal biosorption from mixture.  相似文献

Hexavalent chromium biosorption by raw algae is always accompanied with significantly high organic leaching. In this study, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, calcium chloride, formaldehyde, and glutaraldehyde were used for modification of raw Sargassum sp. seaweed (RSW), in order that the modified seaweed (MSW) has a lower organic leaching while the metal biosorption capacity is comparable to the RSW. The result shows that the chemical modification by 0.2% formaldehyde achieves such goals. The biosorption of both RSW and MSW is highly pH dependent. At the optimal pH of 2.0, the maximum biosorption capacities of MSW and RSW are 1.123 and 0.601 mmol g(-1), respectively. The surface treatment improves the reduction capacity of the biosorbents. The instrumental analysis demonstrates that the Cr(VI) biosorption is controlled by redox, ion exchange and coordination reactions, of which alcohol, carboxyl, amino and sulphonic groups play important roles. The complete uptake of hexavalent chromium is achieved in 20 h. The chemical reduction for Cr(VI) to Cr(III) is pH dependent and controls the overall chromium removal kinetics.  相似文献

Chromium(VI) is present in several industrial wastewaters and it can cause health and environmental hazards above certain concentrations. Equilibrium studies have shown the feasibility of using Sargassum sp. algae for chromium removal from aqueous solutions by biosorption. However, for the design and operation of chromium biosorption processes, dynamic flow studies are required. The objective of the study was to examine chromium(VI) removal from an aqueous solution using a packed-bed column with Sargassum sp. algae as a biosorbent. The dynamic behavior of the biosorption column was investigated through experiments and the influence of operating conditions, such as initial chromium concentration, flow rate and amount of biosorbent, on the column removal capacity have been analyzed using the factorial design methodology. The capacity of removal obtained at optimum conditions was 19.06 mg of metal/g biosorbent.  相似文献

Seaweed Sargassum sp. biomass proved to be useful for the recovery of ionic copper from highly concentrated solutions simulating effluents from semiconductor production. In the case of solutions containing copper in the form of chloride, sulphate and nitrate salts, the best pH for the recovery of copper was 4.5. It was observed that copper biosorption from copper nitrate solutions was higher than the recovery of copper from copper chloride or sulphate solutions. The continuous system used was constituted of four column reactors filled with the biomass of Sargassum sp. and showed high operational stability. Biomass of Sargassum sp. in the reactors was gradually saturated from the bottom to the top of each column reactor. The biomass of Sargassum sp. in the first column was saturated first, followed by a gradual saturation of the remaining columns due to the pre-concentration caused by the biomass in the first column. The biomass of Sargassum in the bioreactors completely biosorbed the ionic copper contained in 63 L of copper sulphate solution, 72 L of copper chloride solution and 72 L of copper nitrate solution, all the solutions containing copper at 500 mg/L. Effluents produced after biosorption presented copper concentrations less than 0.5 mg/L.  相似文献

A basic investigation on the removal of cadmium(II) ions from aqueous solutions by dead Sargassum sp. was conducted in batch conditions. The influence of different experimental parameters; initial pH, shaking rate, sorption time, temperature and initial concentrations of cadmium ions on cadmium uptake was evaluated. Results indicated that cadmium uptake could be described by the Langmuir adsorption model, being the monolayer capacity negatively affected with an increase in temperature. Analogously, the adsorption equilibrium constant decreased with increasing temperature. The kinetics of the adsorption process followed a second-order adsorption, with characteristic constants increasing with increasing temperature. Activation energy of biosorption could be calculated as equal to 10 kcal/mol. The biomass used proved to be suitable for removal of cadmium from dilute solutions. Its maximum uptake capacity was 120 mg/g. It can be considered an optimal result when compared to conventional adsorbing materials. Thus Sargassum sp. has great potential for removing cadmium ions especially when concentration of this metal is low in samples such as wastewater streams.  相似文献

Litter accumulation in woodlands contaminated by Pb,Zn, Cd and Cu   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary Close to a primary lead-zinc-cadmium smelter the standing crop of litter in woodlands was found to be elevated relative to more distant sites. The total litter accumulation is similar to that from contaminated sites reported by other authors but in this case the concentrations of heavy metals are considerably lower than those reported for other sites. Evidence is provided to support the hypothesis that within the woodlands studied, litter accumulation is not closely pH dependent, but is clearly related to both cadmium and zinc concentrations in litter. Litter accumulation occurs in certain particle size ranges and fractionation shows that the weight of accumulated litter in these size ranges is highly correlated to cadmium concentrations. These results are discussed in relation to the reported possible long term effects of metal contamination on decomposition processes and the possibility of adaptation to these adverse effects.  相似文献

Potential of spent biomass of a cyanobacterium, Nostoc linckia HA 46, from a hydrogen bioreactor was studied for biosorption of a textile dye, reactive red 198. The waste biomass was immobilized in calcium alginate and used for biosorption of the dye from aqueous solution using response surface methodology (RSM). Kinetics of the dye in aqueous solution was studied in batch mode. Interactive effects of initial dye concentration (100-500 mg/L), pH (2-6) and temperature (25-45 °C) on dye removal were examined using Box-Behnken design. Maximum adsorption capacity of the immobilized biomass was 93.5 mg/g at pH 2.0, initial concentration of 100 mg/L and 35 °C temperature, when 94% of the dye was removed. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) studies revealed that biosorption was mainly mediated by functional groups like hydroxyl, amide, carboxylate, methyl and methylene groups present on the cell surface.  相似文献

The biosorption of cadmium and lead ions from artificial aqueous solutions using waste baker's yeast biomass was investigated. The yeast cells were treated with caustic, ethanol and heat for increasing their biosorption capacity and the highest metal uptake values (15.63 and 17.49 mg g(-1) for Cd(2+) and Pb(2+), respectively) were obtained by ethanol treated yeast cells. The effect of initial metal concentration and pH on biosorption by ethanol treated yeast was studied. The Langmuir model and Freundlich equation were applied to the experimental data and the Langmuir model was found to be in better correlation with the experimental data. The maximum metal uptake values (qmax, mg g(-1)) were found as 31.75 and 60.24 for Cd(2+) and Pb(2+), respectively. Competitive biosorption experiments were performed with Cd(2+) and Pb(2+) together with Cu(2+) and the competitive biosorption capacities of the yeast biomass for all metal ions were found to be lower than in non-competitive conditions.  相似文献

A fundamental investigation of the biosorption of Cd2+ from aqueous solution by the edible seaweed Sargassum fusiforme was performed under batch conditions. The influences of experimental parameters, such as the initial pH, sorption time, temperature, and initial Cd2+ concentration, on Cd2+ uptake by S. fusiforme were evaluated. The results indicated that the biosorption of Cd2+ depended on the initial Cd2+ concentration, as well as the pH. The uptake of Cd2+ could be described by the Langmuir isotherm model, and both the Langmuir biosorption equilibrium constant and the maximum biosorption capacity of the monolayer decreased with increasing temperature, thereby confirming the exothermic character of the sorption process. The biosorption kinetics follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and intraparticle diffusion is the sole rate-limiting step for the entire biosorption period. These fundamental equilibrium and kinetic results can support further studies to the removal of cadmium from S. fusiforme harvested from cadmium-polluted waters.  相似文献

In this study, dried and humid fruiting bodies of Tremella fuciformis and Auricularia polytricha were examined as cost-effective biosorbents in treatment of heavy metals (Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+) in aqueous solution. The humid T. fuciformis showed the highest capacity to adsorb the four metals in the multi-metal solutions. The Pb2+ adsorption rates were 85.5%, 97.8%, 84.8%, and 91.0% by dried T. fuciformis, humid T. fuciformis, dried A. polytricha, and humid A. polytricha, respectively. The adsorption amount of Pb2+ by dried and humid T. fuciformis in Cd2+ + Pb2+, Cu2+ + Pb2+, Pb2+ + Zn2+, Cd2+ + Cu2+ + Pb2+, and Cd2+ + Zn2+ + Pb2+ solutions were not lower than that in Pb2+ solutions. The results suggested that in humid T. fuciformis, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ promoted the Pb2+ adsorption by the biomass. In the multi-metal solutions of Cd2+ + Cu2+ + Pb2+ + Zn2+, the adsorption amount and rates of the metals by all the test biosorbents were in the order of Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Zn2+ > Cd2+. Compared with the pseudo first-order model, the pseudo second-order model described the adsorption kinetics much better, indicating a two-step biosorption process. The present study confirmed that fruiting bodies of the jelly fungi should be useful for the treatment of wastewater containing Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+.  相似文献

The dynamic removal of lead, copper and cadmium in a single component system by Phanerochaete chrysosporium was studied in packed columns. The packed columns consisted of biomass of P. chrysosporium immobilized on polyurethane foam cubes. The performances of packed columns were described through the concept of breakthrough and the values of column parameters predicted as a function of bed depth. The column biosorption data were evaluated in terms of maximum (equilibrium) capacity of the column, the amount of metal loading and the yield of the process. The maximum capacities for lead, copper and cadmium were 70.7, 43.7 and 70.8 mg, respectively, and their yields were 39.2, 40.6 and 41%, respectively. The kinetic and mass transfer aspects of the dynamic removal of the three metals were studied using three mathematical models commonly used to describe the column performance in adsorption processes. Column studies showed good agreement between the experimental data and the simulated breakthrough curves obtained with Adams-Bohart or the Wolborska model and the Clark model. While the initial segment of the breakthrough curve was defined by the Adams-Bohart and Wolborska models, the whole breakthrough curve was well predicted by the Clark model for all the three metals studied.  相似文献

Biomass of nonliving brown seaweed Sargassum fluitans pretreated by different methods is capable of taking up more than 10% (11 mEq/g) of its dry weight in aluminum at pH 4.5. There are indications that the biomass hydroxyl groups were involved in sequestering the aluminum in the form of polynuclear aluminum species. Aluminum-alginate complex (like cotton candy) was formed in the aluminum sorption solution as alginate was partially released from the biomass. Aluminum uptake of S. fluitans biomass was independent of residual alginate content in the biomass. Sodium ion added for pH adjustment was not adsorbed at all in the presence of aluminum ion. Fungi including Aspergillus and Penicillium, resistant to Ni2+, Cd2+, and Cr6+ were isolated from soil receiving long-term application of municipal wastewater mix with untreated industrial effluents of Aligarh, India. Metal tolerance in term of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 125-550 microg/ml for Cd, 300-850 microg/ml for Ni and 300-600 microg/ml for Cr against test fungi. Two isolates, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium sp. were tested for their Cr, Ni and Cd biosorption potential using alkali treated, dried and powdered mycelium. Biosorption experiment was conducted in 100 ml of solution at three initial metal concentrations i.e., 2, 4 and 6 mM with contact time (18 hr) and pretreated fungal biomass (0.1g) at 25 degrees C. Biosorption of all metals was found higher at 4 mM initial metal concentration as compared to biosorption at 2 and 6 mM concentrations. At 4 mM initial metal concentration, chromium biosorption was 18.05 and 19.3 mg/g of Aspergillus and Penicillium biomasses, respectively. Similarly, biosorption of Cd and Ni ions was also maximum at 4 mM initial metal concentration by Aspergillus (19.4 mg/g for Cd and 25.05 mg/g of biomass for Ni) and Penicillium (18.6 mg/g for Cd and 17.9 mg/g of biomass for Ni). In general, biosorption of metal was influenced by initial metal concentration and type of the test fungi. The results indicated that fungi of metal contaminated soil have high level of metal tolerance and biosorption properties.  相似文献

In this study, the potential for the application of the bioaugmentation to Cd and Zn contaminated sediment was investigated. A batch experiment was performed in the lake sediments augmented with Ralstonia sp. HM-1. The degradation capacity of 18.7 mg-DOC/l/day in the treatment group was bigger than that of the blank group (4.4 mg-DOC/l/day). It can be regarded as the result of the reduction of the metal concentration in the liquid phase due to adsorption into the sediments, with the increased alkalinity resulting from the reduction of sulfate by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). The removal efficiency of cadmium and zinc in the treatment group was both 99.7% after 35 days. Restrain of elution to water phase from sediment in the Ralstonia sp. HM-1 added treatment group was also shown. In particular, the observed reduction of the exchangeable fraction and an increase in the bound to organics or sulfide fraction in the treatment group indicate its role in the prevention of metal elution from the sediment. Therefore, for bioremediation and restrain of elution from the sediment polluted by metal, Ralstonia sp. augmentation with indigenous microorganism including SRB, sediment stabilization and restrain of elution to surface water is recommended.  相似文献
