We have previously shown that treating rats with the reversible goitrogen 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) from birth to Day 25 increases testis size and sperm production in adulthood by up to 80% and 140%, respectively. The purpose of this study was to determine the critical period(s) during development when PTU treatment can increase adult testis size and sperm production. Rats were treated with PTU beginning on Days 0, 8, 16, or 24 for periods of 9, 17, or 25 days. To further define the critical period, additional rats were treated with PTU prenatally or on Days 4-24. PTU treatments of 9, 17, or 25 days beginning at birth increased testis weight 18%, 38%, and 69%, respectively, by 135 days of age, while daily sperm production (DSP) increased 35%, 65%, and 94%, respectively. Efficiency of sperm production (DSP/g testis) also increased by approximately 25% in these rats. There was an inverse relationship between testis and body weights: increasing lengths of PTU treatment increased testis weight but decreased body weight. PTU treatment starting on Day 8 or later did not increase testis weight or DSP regardless of duration. Treatment on Days 4-24 increased adult testis weight and DSP similarly to treatment from birth to Day 24, but prenatal PTU treatment was ineffective. Testosterone concentrations were not altered in treated rats, even those with increased testis weight. These results indicate that the later part of the first postnatal week (Days 4-8) is the crucial period during which PTU treatment must begin in order to increase adult testis size and sperm production.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The variability of DNA content in turkey spermatozoa of four different lines and its correlation with body weight and sperm concentration were studied. In lines selected for lower body weight the DNA content was 2.034 and 2.036 pg per spermatozoon. In lines selected for higher body weight the DNA content was 2.267 and 2.370 pg per spermatozoon. Sperm concentration in 1 mm3 of semen, however, was higher in lines with a lower body weight (6.08–6.21 million) in comparison with lines selected for higher body weight (5.46–5.67 million). The correlations between the DNA content and sperm concentration were negative (r ranged from ?.457 to ?.860).  相似文献

Detailed reproductive pattern and associated endocrine characteristics have been documented in only a few species of order Chiroptera. The aim of the present study was to examine the changes in body weight, serum insulin, leptin, androstenedione and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations during annual ovarian cycle in the sheath-tailed bat, Taphozous longimanus. Bats were sampled over three years. Leptin, a satiety hormone produced primarily by adipose tissue, provides information to feeding center of the brain about nutritional status, fat mass, appetite and energy expenditure. The circulating concentration of leptin begins to increase from October and attains a peak in December. The peak serum leptin concentration coincides with body weight in November before winter dormancy in December. The serum leptin levels dissociate from body weight during December. The other peaks of serum leptin levels coincide with late stages of the two successive pregnancies. The serum insulin concentration begins to increase from September and attains a peak during December. The insulin concentration remains low from January to August. The circulating androstenedione concentration begins to increase in October, reaching a peak in December. This increase in androstenedione concentration correlated with the period of heavy accumulation of abdominal fat and increase in body weight. There was a sharp decline in androstenedione concentration and body weight in January. The serum LH shows peaks, in November, coinciding with the peaked body weight, the other peaks in January and May, coinciding with ovulation for the two successive pregnancies. The high leptin and insulin levels might be responsible for the maintenance of reproductive response and gonadal function during adverse environmental condition in the winter, while high androstenedione, and associated body weight along with LH might be responsible for maintaining basal gonadal function. We conclude that high leptin, androstenedione and insulin serve, as signal for the reproductive functions in that sufficient body fat are available to meet the caloric demands and maintain normal function during adverse winter conditions.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the number and distribution of spermatozoa in males, and annual changes in the distribution of litters and embryos in females were examined in the iteroparous dasyurid marsupial, Sminthopsis macroura , in captivity. Total number of sperm in the testis (0.53 × 106 sperm/testis) and epididymidis (0.54 × 106 sperm/epididymidis) were extremely low when compared with those in other marsupials and eutherian mammals. Testicular sperm production and epididymal sperm reserves were high between May and October and declined to a minimum in March. These changes reflected monthly changes in testicular and epididymal weight and testis morphology. Data on changing epididymal sperm distribution suggest that sperm storage in the cauda epididymidis is limited and that few sperm are required for successful insemination. Litters were born between June and January, with most litters occurring between July and October. Second pregnancies occurred between October and January, with a peak in December. The data indicate that the timing of mating activity and litter production by S. macroura correspond very closely with the period of maximum sperm production by males. The synchrony of these events contrasts dramatically with that of similar-sized semelparous dasyurid species. It is hypothesized that testicular failure prior to the mating season, copulatory behaviour, and possibly male die-off in dasyurid marsupials are related to the degree of competition between males for mates and, hence, population density and environmental predictability. These data suggest that intermale sperm competition is affected by the periods of female receptivity and the length of sperm storage in the female reproductive tract. Fundamental differences in the reproductive strategies of iteroparous and semelparous dasyurid marsupials are discussed.  相似文献

The relationships between testis size, hormone secretion and sperm production were studied during the spring (December) and autumn (May) in rams of two breeds with different breeding seasons and body weights (Corriedale and Australian Merino) maintained on native pastures and under natural photoperiods in Uruguay. Blood samples were collected at 20-min intervals during a 260-360-min period in 13 rams (four Corriedale, nine Australian Merino) during the late spring and autumn. Rams were weighed and testis size was estimated by orchimetry at each time period. Sperm production was estimated during a 2-week period, 2 months before blood collection and during each week following every blood collection. There was no relationship between testicular size and sperm production measured at the same time, nor between live weight and sperm production. In contrast, testicular volume during the late spring was correlated with sperm production in the autumn (r = 0.65; P = 0.02). The autumn serum LH was higher in Corriedale than in Merino rams. LH pulsatility was unaffected by season, but LH pulse frequency tended to be higher in Corriedale than in Merino rams, particularly in the late spring (2.37 versus 1.56 pulses/6 h; P = 0.08). Serum testosterone concentration was similar in both breeds and seasons. FSH levels were higher in the late spring than in the autumn in both breeds (Corriedale: 2.83 +/- 0.48 versus 2.17 +/- 0.24 ng x mL(-1); Merino: 2.23 +/- 0.24 versus 1.88 +/- 0.17 ng x mL(-1)). FSH and testosterone concentrations during the late spring were positively correlated with autumn sperm production (P = 0.07 and P = 0.03, respectively). In conclusion, the present experiment suggests that LH secretion is not a good parameter for the prediction of sperm production. In contrast, in our conditions (breeds and native pastures) testicular size and testosterone or FSH concentrations from the late spring may be used to predict sperm production in the autumn.  相似文献

To determine whether or not the long-term intermittent treatment with oleoyl-estrone (OE) in rats induces a cumulative weight loss, adult male rats were treated with OE over three alternating 10-day periods, with a 30-day "recovery" period occurring between each period. At the end of the third treatment period, the rats were allowed to recover and were then mated with females. Each treatment period produced a decrease of ca. 7% in body weight with no rebound during the recovery periods, whereas weight changed at the same pace in controls. The greatest difference in body weight was observed during the last days of treatment. OE-treated rats retained their initial protein pools throughout the treatment. Furthermore, treated and control males remained fertile and were able to procreate. Thus, we can conclude that intermittent OE treatment induces a cumulative weight loss in adult male rats.  相似文献

This study aimed to explore the association between body mass index (BMI), other anthropometric indexes and semen quality in a general male population in Taiwan. In this cross-sectional cohort study, the study cohort consisted of 7941 healthy male individuals aged 18 years or older who participated in a standard medical screening program run by a private firm from January 2008 to May 2013. Semen parameters including sperm concentration (SC), total sperm motility (TSM), progressive motility (PRM), and normal sperm morphology (NSM) were recorded. Anthropometric indexes including BMI, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and body fat percentage were measured. A total of 7630 men were enrolled for the final analysis, of whom 68.5% had a normal weight distribution and 31.4% were overweight or obese. Total sperm motility, progressive motility, normal sperm morphology and sperm concentration showed a statistically linear decline with increasing age (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001 and p = 0.004). Sperm concentration showed a significantly negatively linear association with BMI (p = 0.005), and normal sperm morphology showed an inverse association with BMI and waist-to-height ratio (p < 0.001 and p = 0.004). The prevalence of abnormal total sperm motility, progressive motility, normal sperm morphology and sperm concentration increased with increasing age (p = 0.011, p < 0.001, p < 0.001 and p = 0.002). Lower normal sperm morphology and sperm concentration were associated with increasing body adiposity (p<0.05). No relationship between obesity and sperm motility was identified.  相似文献

Infant‐carrying behavior among callitrichids seems to be a costly activity. Costs have been related to the physical efforts of carrying the weight of very heavy infants and to the resulting reduction in foraging efficiency. However, the costs of carrying in terms of the physical consequences for carriers have not previously been assessed. In this study, we have regarded weight loss in infant carriers as a measure of costs. We studied five families of cotton‐top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) during the first 9 weeks following the birth of infants. Captive‐breeding conditions were required so that body weight could be measured frequently. To avoid inflicting undue stress on the subject animals, we used a noninvasive method for weighing the tamarins. Differences in carrying contribution were found amongst fathers and male and female helpers, with female helpers contributing less. We have found that carrying infants in the cotton‐top tamarins is an activity that produces a weight loss. Fathers and male helpers go through a maximal body weight loss. While carrying, the tamarins also decrease food intake. However, no relationship was found between contribution to carrying and feeding time or in energetic intake during feeding observations. Thus, it seems that a direct relation doesn't exist between the observations of feeding and weight loss. Fathers increase their contribution to carrying during mothers' periovulatory periods. In this period, male helpers and especially fathers go through a maximal body weight loss. We found body weight losses of up to 11.3% in one subadult male and 9.1percnt; in a father during the fifth week. No changes occurred in food intake in fathers or other male helpers during this period. During periovulatory periods, mothers carried less frequently but did increase their food intake. They gained weight from the second week after birth onward, especially during the periovulatory period. It seems that the infant‐carrying behavior of fathers and male helpers may contribute to the improvement of the mothers' physical condition after birth and therefore may support a consecutive pregnancy. The food consumption and egg production of 26 adult (13 female and 13 male) Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ) were monitored during prespawning, spawning and postspawning periods. Females spawned from late January to mid-April. Feeding activity occurred from December to early January and ceased for females, on average, 36 days (15–54 days) before the onset of spawning. The duration of spawning by females was, on average, 42 days (10–61 days) and feeding was suppressed by both sexes during the first three-quarters of each female's spawning period. Mature females went, on average, 70 days or 19% of the year without eating. An abrupt increase in feeding activity, particularly by females, occurred during the last quarter of spawning or shortly after the release of the last egg batch (on average, feeding started again after 91% of a female's eggs had been released or 82% of egg batches). Females consumed greater quantities of food than males during both winter and postspawning feeding periods. During spawning, females lost, on average, 29% of their body weight and males 14%. Fecundity ranged from 0.75 to 3.97 million eggs per female. The volume of eggs produced by four individual females (range = 1285–5995 ml in four to 11 batches) ranged from 99 to 195% (mean 150%) of a female's postspawning body volume. Six immature cod fed throughout the experimental period and gained, on average, 8% of initial body weight. Laboratory results were supported by stomach fullness index values of Georges Bank cod exhibiting different maturity states.  相似文献

Daily oral administration of gossypol acetic acid (40 mg/kg body weight daily) resulted in a gradual decrease in the semen volume and sperm concentration. Fertility dropped to zero at the end of the treatment period. Activities of acrosin, hyaluronidase and angiotensin converting enzyme were also drastically decreased by the end of the treatment period. A loss of appetite, loss of body weight and morphological abnormalities in spermatozoa were noticed in the treated cocks. At 4 weeks after cessation of the treatment, full recovery of the above measures was recorded. Healthy chicks were hatched and were observed for several months.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate changes of quality and freezability of stallion semen in response to repeated acute treadmill exercise. Ejaculates from 11 stallions were collected, evaluated and frozen weekly during four periods of 4 weeks each defined as before (period 1), during (period 2) and after (periods 3 and 4) intense exercise. In fresh semen the gel-free volume, sperm concentration, motility, normal sperm and sperm with major defects (acrosome defects, nuclear vacuoles, abnormal heads, midpiece defects and proximal droplets) were evaluated. In frozen-thawed semen, motility as well as viability (SYBR-14/PI) were examined. In period 2, all stallions were exercised on an indoor high speed treadmill twice a week (total of eight sessions) using an incremental workload test. Heart rate was monitored telemetrically during exercise and blood samples were taken for determination of cortisol, testosterone and lactate. Results of our investigation demonstrate that heart rate and the plasma concentrations of cortisol, testosterone and lactate significantly (P < 0.05) increased during each exercise session. Furthermore, significantly more major sperm defects were present in periods 3 (69.5+/-2.1%) and 4 (66.8+/-2.1%) than in periods 1 (62.2+/-2.4%) and 2 (62.5+/-2.2%). Acrosome defects increased towards the end of exercise but improved 3 weeks later to values observed before exercise. In frozen-thawed semen, motility was significantly lower in period 2 (45.4+/-2.3%) compared to period 4 (51.6+/-1.7%) and viability was significantly lower in period 2 (49.2+/-2.0%) than in periods 1 (53.8+/-2.1%) and 4 (53.7+/-1.6%). Our results clearly demonstrate that in the stallion repeated strenuous treadmill exercise can negatively influence semen quality and freezability.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the presence and magnitude of seasonal fluctuations in semen quality and other reproductive indices in bison bulls. Testicles from 288 commercially slaughtered bison bulls were collected monthly over a 1-year period. Carcass and testicle weight were determined and measurements of seminiferous tubule lumen, diameter, and epithelial thickness were made. Sperm cell morphology and defects were described and quantified using epididymal semen from each testicle. Twenty-one Plains (Bison bison bison) and Wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) breeding bulls, averaging 6.0 years of age (range 2.5-8.0), from three farms were selected for semen collection and evaluation on the basis of producer co-operation. Semen was collected by electro-ejaculation on four seasonal occasions during a 12-month period. Ejaculate quality was judged on the basis of volume, density, gross and individual motility, morphology, live/dead ratio, and concentration. Sperm cell morphologies were evaluated microscopically and classified according to criteria used for bovine semen. Fecal testosterone was measured at each semen collection using a commercial competitive binding radioimmunoassay. There was an increase in carcass weights over the study period and testis weights were moderately correlated (r=0.44) with carcass weights. However, mean testes weights were heavier (P<0.05) in the summer than in winter, spring, or fall periods. There were no differences in the proportion of normal and abnormal epididymal sperm between seasons but there were seasonal changes in the testicular parenchyma. Seminiferous tubule and lumen diameter, and epithelial thickness were greatest (P<0.05) in summer. Live bulls gained weight between April and November, but lost weight over the winter. Normal sperm cell percentages as well as individual sperm cell motility in electro-ejaculated sperm samples were higher (P<0.05) at the pre-breeding collection relative to other collections, but no change in sperm cell concentrations occurred over the study period. Fecal testosterone concentrations were highest at the pre-breeding period (June) but decreased (P<0.05) in each subsequent collection to reach their lowest levels in the April. While many changes in seen characteristics were not significant, overall results indicate the presence of some reproductive seasonality and increased testicular capacity in the summer breeding season. Bulls showing marginal semen quality in the winter but otherwise carrying desirable genetic traits may warrant another evaluation in late spring prior to being culled from a breeding program.  相似文献

Spermatozoa were found earlier in the ejaculates of hemicastrated cockerels and the mean body weight of the hemicastrates was significantly (P less than 0.01) greater than that of the intact cockerels. The mean values for sperm concentration/ml, and total spermatozoa in the ejaculates of the hemicastrates were significantly greater (P less than 0.01) than those of the intact cockerels. Differences existed between the hemicastrates bearing the left testis, and those bearing the right testis in respect of age at sperm production, sperm/concentration and total spermatozoa in the ejaculate.  相似文献

Annual changes in testicular development and occurrence of parasperm were investigated using 2-year-old male fourspine sculpins Cottus kazika, based on the histological observation of testes. The male reproductive organ of fourspine sculpins comprised a pair of testes and a sperm duct that functioned as a sperm-storage organ. Male maturity was divided into the following periods: spermatogonial proliferation period (September), early spermatogenic period (October), mid-spermatogenic period (November), late spermatogenic period (December and January), functional maturation period (February and March), and recovery period (April to August). Spermatogenesis rapidly progressed from October to January and continued until the functional maturation period. Parasperm formation, which is known in some cottidae species, was observed in fourspine sculpins. Testicular regression of cultured fourspine sculpins progressed slowly during the recovery period when residual parasperm and empty spaces occupied the testis. The parasperm were immotile and oval and slightly concave on one side; additionally, they stained strongly with hematoxylin and PAS. Seminal lobules of the testis were filled with parasperm during the spawning period; in contrast, the sperm duct was filled with eusperm. These findings were observed in both cultured and wild fish. In this study, the functions of parasperm with regard to reproduction in fourspine sculpins are discussed.  相似文献

Twenty four Awassi lambs (mean BW 24.4 kg) were used in a two periods experiment to measure maintenance (zero growth) and growth requirements of metabolizable energy (ME). During the pre-treatment period (period 1, 3 weeks) all lambs were maintained at a constant level of feed intake (2% BW). During the treatment period (period 2, 10 weeks) the lambs were divided into four equal groups and fed different amounts (2, 3, 4 and 5% of BW). Six additional lambs of similar BW and age were killed at the beginning of the experiment to compare final empty body weight (FEBW) with initial body weight (IBW). Twelve lambs, divided into four equal groups were fed the experimental diet in the same amounts as in the growth experiment (period 2) to determine the digestibility of energy.

Energy requirement for maintenance (EM) was measured by both constant weight technique, using data collected during period 1, and regression technique by regressing ME intake on body weight gain (BWG) and empty body weight gain (EBWG). EM measured during the constant weight period (pre-treatment) and overall experimental period (pre-treatment plus treatment periods) were 0.482 and 0.466 MJ of ME per kg M0.75 per day. Predicted energy requirements for growth (Eg) calculated from equations derived during the treatment period were 0.433, 0.623, 0.782, 0.910 and 1.007 (MJ per kg M0.75 per day) for the growth rates 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 (g per day) respectively. It is concluded to be more appropriate to use the values derived during the overall experimental period for maintenance and the overall treatment period for growth as they are most applicable to production situations.  相似文献

Relationship between changes in the body weight and circulating androstenedione concentration was examined in order to find out their involvement in asynchronous gametic cycle of male and female S. heathi. Body weight of both male and female bats increased from September due to accumulation of white adipose tissue and reached to a peak in November. The body weight declined gradually due to consumption of adipose tissue during December and January reaching basal level in February. A significant correlation between body weight and serum androstenedione concentration was observed. Correlated with maximum body weight, peak androstenedione level was found during November in both male and female bats. Peak androstenedione level during November may be responsible for stimulating spermatogenesis in the male, but may suppress follicular growth and ovulation in the female, thus resulting in asynchronous gametic cycle of male and female S. heathi.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if there is a seasonal pattern of sexual activity dependent on food availability in male Creole goats in subtropical Mexico. The study was conducted in the Laguna Region in the State of Coahuila, Mexico (26 degrees N). Male Creole goats (n = 8) were kept in a shed, fed alfalfa ad libitum and given 200 g of concentrate daily throughout the study. Live weight and testicular weight were determined every 2 wk. Sexual behavior and sperm production were determined monthly. Blood samples were obtained weekly to determine testosterone plasma concentrations. All variables were subjected to sinusoidal modeling procedures and showed important seasonal variations (P < 0.0001) with different phase angles for body weight, testicular weight and testosterone plasma concentrations. The nadir of live weight occurred in November and the peak in May. The lowest testicular weight (90 g) and testosterone plasma concentrations (0.1 ng/mL) were observed in January and February, respectively, while the peaks were observed in July and August (145 g and 10 ng/mL, respectively). Ejaculation latency also varied during the study, being low between May and November (96 sec) and reaching a peak in April (183 sec). Minimum number of spermatozoa per ejaculate occurred between February and April (1.4 x 10(9) cells/ejaculate) while the maximum number was observed between May and September (2.8 x 10(9) spermatozoa/ejaculate). Progressive sperm motility was low between January and April (3.04 on average) and high between May and November (about 3.55 on average). The percentage of live spermatozoa diminished between January and April (68% in April) and then increased to values around 80% between May and November. These results lead us to conclude that male Creole goats in Northern Mexico, fed constantly throughout the year, exhibit seasonality in their reproductive activity. The influence of age, weaning, season of the year and body weight on the peripheral levels of progesterone, oestradiol-17β and luteinizing hormone (LH) were studied during neonatal, perinatal and peripubertal periods in buffalo heifers. The buffalo heifers exhibited oestrus only after 30 months of age and had higher levels of LH and oestradiol-17β and a lower level of progesterone on the day of oestrus. The progesterone concentration was affected significantly (P < 0.01) by different seasons, by weaning (P < 0.05) and varied between pubertal and neonatal periods (P < 0.01), whereas the oestradiol-17β level was affected significantly (P < 0.01) by weaning and varied at different seasons and with body weight. However, the LH concentration was greater during the neonatal period than the pre- and peripubertal periods and changed significantly (P < 0.01) between groups of ages and body weights. The results suggest that increases in the levels of oestradiol-17β and progesterone after 30 months of age are probably indicative of the onset of puberty in buffalo heifers. However, a further increase in oestradiol-17β, LH, and a decrease in progesterone are essential for oestrus and cyclicity to be exhibited in buffalo heifers.  相似文献

Synopsis Male body size has been emphasized as an important factor contributing to the breeding success of individuals. However, the operational sex ratio (OSR: ratio of mature females to males) during the breeding season significantly change due to differences in the breeding timing and period within and between males and females and may influence the selective advantage of the male large body size for mates. We examined the reproductive ecology of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou, inhabiting Lake Toya, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Precipitation triggered the upstream migration, although males migrated into the river earlier than females. As a result, the OSR in the river changed markedly during the breeding season, as did the size structure of males in the river. Large males migrated into the river earlier than the smaller males. Differential male survival resulted in the different population size structure between the early and late periods. Under these conditions, we analyzed which males were more successful in releasing the more sperm throughout the breeding season by estimating the decrease in the sperm content in male carcasses. The body size and sperm-releasing success of the males were not related. With a weak male-biased OSR and synchronous timing of reproduction in females, males that had entered the river succeeded in releasing the sperm regardless of body size. Such a fluctuating advantage for different body sizes likely contributes to the maintenance of the size variation in the male salmon.  相似文献

A group of stallions with different reproductive indexes were used to study seasonal variations in sperm quality (Equus caballus). Semen samples were collected from late September to July and analyzed according to four seasonal periods: late September-December, January-March, late March-May, and June-July. Parameters monitored included sperm concentration, sperm motility, sperm morphology, sperm viability, acrosomal status, plasma membrane stability, and sperm mitochondrial membrane potential. Overall, seminal parameters monitored are affected mostly by time period, followed by animal and lastly by fertility, stressing the importance of individual variations in out-bred animal models. The analysis of multiple ejaculates from the same animals showed clear seasonal-based differences (P < 0.05) with poor semen quality in winter and a noticeable improvement in sperm quality with increasing photoperiod. Better semen quality was observed between late March and May. Interactions between month period, animal, and fertility were evident (P < 0.05) for sperm concentration, head and tail sperm anomalies, and acrosomal integrity. Thus, it may be advisable to adjust the use of stallion semen according to seasonal variations.  相似文献
