Extant members of Acipenseridae are generally classified in four genera: Scaphirhynchus, Pseudoscaphirhynchus, Huso and “Acipenser,” which is widely recognized to be paraphyletic. Advances have been made in understanding the systematic relationships among sturgeons based on both morphological and molecular data. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA data suggested that Pseudoscaphirhynchus should be regarded as nested within “Acipenser,” specifically as sister group to the Stellate Sturgeon, A. stellatus. Recent morphological analyses also recovered this relationship, supported by a number of osteological synapomorphies, although these results were based on few and relatively small individuals. Here we describe the anatomy of the skull of A. stellatus based on newly prepared specimens of adult individuals, as well as examination of a large number of preserved individuals representing a broad range of ontogenetic stages. We present new anatomical data from all regions of the skull (dermatocranium, neurocranium, viscerocranium) and offer interpretations of these and other characters. In particular, we describe the allometry in the snout of A. stellatus, which undergoes substantial elongation relative to other sturgeons. Aspects of the skull of A. stellatus are compared to other members of the family, specifically the course of the occipital sensory canal and the morphology and distribution of cranial spines.  相似文献

We reared shortnose and Atlantic sturgeons at different temperatures after hatch and measured yolk utilization rate and efficiency (YUE), maximum standard length, survival and development of escape response. Newly hatched Atlantic sturgeon, were smaller in size, more efficient at utilizing yolk (incorporating yolk to body tissue) and reached developmental stages sooner than shortnose sturgeon reared at the same temperatures (13–15°C). Within each species, decreasing temperature delayed yolk absorption, escape initiation, time to reach maximum size, and time to 100% mortality. However, YUEs and the size of the larvae at these 'stages' were independent of rearing temperature for both species. These results suggest that even as temperature drives metabolic processes to speed up development, these two species are still extremely efficient at transferring yolk energy to body tissues. The lower efficiencies experienced by larval shortnose may reflect difference in yolk quality between the two species and/or the Atlantic sturgeon's higher conversion efficiency. The ability of these two sturgeon species to develop successfully and efficiently under a wide range in temperatures may provide a competitive advantage over more stenothermic species and explain their persistence through evolutionary time.  相似文献

The inhibitor of protein synthesis cycloheximide, inhibitor of steroidogenesis aminoglutethimide, and inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis indomethacin, as well as the drugs affecting the cell cytoskeleton, such as cytochalasin B and colchicine, were used for studying the mechanisms of ovulation in the stellate sturgeon Acipenser stellatus Pall. Follicles were isolated from the body cavity within certain time intervals after the injection of pituitary suspension to a female and cultivated in media with the inhibitors. In the case of follicles isolated in the middle of the period from hormonal injection until ovulation, cycloheximide, cytochalasin B, and aminoglutethimide suppressed ovulation most effectively, while in the case of oocytes isolated during the last quarter of this period, aminoglutethimide and cytochalasin B were the most effective. It was shown using TEM and SEM that cycloheximide suppressed all processes related to the preparation for ovulation, except the initial ones: contraction of follicle cells and their processes and secondary flattening of these cells. In the presence of aminoglutethimide, the follicle cells underwent pathological changes. Incubation in the media containing indomethacin and colchicine prevented degradation of the outer theca layer at the follicle apex. In the presence of cytochalasin B affecting the cytoskeleton, the drawing of follicle cell processes from the jelly coat channels was blocked, the outer theca cells were strongly contracted, but the cell layer integrity was affected and it was divided in separate fragments. A relationship is discussed between the metabolic processes and morphological changes that lead to ovulation. It was proposed on the basis of the present and previous data that the preovulatory preparation of the follicle tissues comprises two contractile and two apoptotic processes distinctly coordinated in time and space.  相似文献

We investigated the age, growth and population structure of lake sturgeon in the Groundhog and Mattagami rivers, northern Ontario, Canada. Age, estimated from counts of annuli in pectoral fin rays, ranged from 1 to 69 years (y) in the 327 fish examined. Growth, expressed as an increase in fork length and calculated from a von Bertalanffy growth equation, slowed from a peak of about 3.9cmyear-1during the early juvenile period (<9y) and approached an asymptote beyond 90y (FL=141.549[–e-0.043(t–4.901)]). A length–mass equation (log M=3.07 log FL–2.26) and conversion factors for fork and total length (FL=0.97 TL–1.154) from our study ranged from 14.5 to 142cm (fork length), 15.5 to 158cm (total length) and 20 to 19730g (live mass) for 1177 individuals. We found no evidence for spawning or recruitment to the population in our study area. Population age and length structure were strongly bimodal, and growth rate appears to have slowed over the past decade. We discuss the possible environmental correlations and conservation implications of this age (size) distribution.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of an acute stressor on the variation of some physiological and immunological parameters of Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) juveniles. Fish, reared in 3 tanks for 10 weeks, were used for this study. The acute stress of fish consisted of 2 min of air exposure stress. Plasma levels of cortisol, glucose, and lactate as well as lysozyme activity in plasma were measured before stress and 1 hr, 3 hr, 6 hr, 9 hr, 12 hr, and 24 hr after stress. The plasma cortisol significantly increased in the highest level 1 hr after stress, yet it gradually declined after 3 hr. The glucose significantly increased only 1 hr after stress. There was no significant difference between plasma lactate prestress and poststress. Moreover, lysozyme activity was enhanced by stress, thus reaching the highest level 9 hr after stress. The results of this study indicate that Siberian sturgeon not only have a rapid response to acute stress, but also a great capacity for recovery from stress, thus returning physiological parameters to prestress levels after 6 hr.  相似文献

以温度为单因素变量,在人工饲养环境中,分析水温对拟目乌贼幼体日生长率与存活率的影响。实验结果表明,当水温处于28.1~32℃之间时,拟目乌贼幼体的日生长率与水温呈正相关关系;当水温处于32~32.67℃时,拟目乌贼幼体的日生长率与水温呈负相关关系;当水温处于29.5~32.6℃时,拟目乌贼幼体不易出现幼体死亡(死亡率<6.25%),适宜拟目乌贼幼体的存活;而当水温处于32.3~34℃之间时,拟目乌贼幼体出现了13.16%~61.16%的幼体死亡,不适宜拟目乌贼幼体的存活。实验结果表明,当水温处于29.5~32℃之间时,拟目乌贼幼体的存活率高(存活率>93.75%),且日生长率处于0.24%~1.76%,适宜拟目乌贼幼体的存活。  相似文献

Water temperature is an important environmental variable influencing the distribution and health of coldwater fishes such as the green sturgeon, Acipenser medirostris. In this study, we investigated if larval sturgeon were able to tolerate or recover from acute, non-lethal temperature stress that commonly causes deformed notochords, and sought to identify the role of heat-shock proteins (hsp) in stress tolerance. The hsp response is one of the most important cellular mechanisms to prevent the damaging effects of thermal cellular stress, and differences in the ability to over-express hsps during stressful conditions may be associated with an organism’s vulnerability and the extent of thermal injury. In this study, newly hatched larvae were maintained at 17°C (control), or exposed to (a) 26°C for 3 d then maintained at 17°C until yolk-sac absorption or (b) 26°C until yolk-sac absorption. Individuals with deformed notochords were counted, and hsp60, 72, 78 and 89 were analyzed in both normal and deformed larvae by western blotting. Approximately 33% of fish developed curved notochords within the first 3 d of exposure to 26°C. After transfer to cool water 16.5% showed deformities at stage 45, suggesting a significant number of larvae had recovered. Hsp levels remained elevated for at least 9 days after termination of heat-exposure. Overall, percentage of deformed larvae, and hsp72/hsp78 levels were highest in fish continuously exposed to 26°C until yolk-sac absorption. Deformed individuals had significantly higher expression levels of hsp72 and hsp78, and lower hsp60 levels than normal larvae. We conclude that expression of hsp72 and hsp78 and potentially hsp60 are linked to phenotypic variation in the response and vulnerability of green sturgeon larvae to thermal stress.  相似文献

The nutritional role of silver for the freshwater crustacean, Daphnia magna, was examined through four generations of deprivation. Silver inclusion in animal media was set at a nominal zero (employing chemicals of the highest available purity). Both reproduction (−60%) and life span (−40%) were negatively affected when compared to animals reared in the presence of 0.4 ng g−1 Ag. These results strongly suggest a nutritional requirement of silver for daphnids at nanomolar concentrations.  相似文献

This experiment used 24 pigs (26.0 kg) to investigate the effects of dietary chromium (Cr) on pigs challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Following 35 days of diet exposure, the immune stress treatments were: (1) phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) injection and no Cr, (2) LPS injection and no Cr, (3) LPS injection and Cr 1,000 ppb, and (4) LPS injection and Cr 2,000 ppb. At 0 h, PBS or LPS was injected intraperitoneally in each pig. During the first 12 h post-injection, pigs challenged with LPS lost 951 g, while the PBS group gained 170 g (p?<?0.001). Compared with the PBS group, LPS-challenged pigs consumed less feed (p?<?0.01) during the first 24 h. The LPS group had higher rectal temperature at 2 and 4 h and higher respiratory rate at 1.3 and 8.5 h than the PBS group (p?<?0.05). Plasma collected at 3 h had higher cortisol (p?<?0.001) and lower glucose (p?<?0.05) concentrations in the LPS group than the PBS group. However, supplemental Cr did not affect the response variables. Overall, the LPS challenge affects growth performance, vital signs, and plasma variables, but dietary Cr is unable to moderate stress-related effects associated with an LPS challenge.  相似文献

We conducted laboratory experiments with Dabry's sturgeon, Acipenser dabryanus, from the upper Yangtze River to develop a conceptual model of early behavior. We daily observed fish from day-0 (embryo, first life interval after hatching) to day-30 feeding larva for preference of bright habitat and cover, swimming distance above the bottom, up- and down-stream movement, and diel activity. Hatchling to day-12 embryos and days 13–24 larvae were similar for ontogenetic behavior, i.e., neither initiated a dispersal migration, both swam within 15cm of the bottom, both preferred bright habitat, and neither strongly preferred cover or open habitat. Embryos and larvae were weakly active day and night. Days 72–76 juveniles had a weak nocturnal downstream migration, indicating wild juveniles disperse from a spawning site. In other sturgeon species yet studied representing three genera on three continents, Dabry's sturgeon is the first that does not disperse as an embryo or larva. Development of Dabry's sturgeon is slow, requiring more cumulative temperature degree days per millimeter of larvae TL than is required for other sturgeons to develop into larvae. Thus, a dispersal migration that diverts energy from development may not be adaptive. The available information suggests the initial dispersal of early life intervals is likely done by females, which spawn in a dispersed spawning style, not the usual aggregated spawning style. Juvenile migrants had a black body and tail with a light line along the lateral scutes. The color of juvenile migrants shows that a dark body and tail is characteristic of Acipenser that migrate downstream as larvae or juveniles.  相似文献

Green sturgeon, Acipenser medirostris, movement and migration within the Klamath and Trinity rivers were assessed using radio and sonic telemetry. Sexually mature green sturgeon were captured with gillnets in the spring, as adults migrated upstream to spawn. In total, 49 green sturgeon were tagged with radio and/or sonic telemetry tags and tracked manually or with receiver arrays from 2002 to 2004. Tagged individuals exhibited four movement patterns: upstream spawning migration, spring outmigration to the ocean, or summer holding, and outmigration after summer holding. Spawning migrations occurred from April to June, as adults moved from the ocean upstream to spawning sites. Approximately 18% of adults, those not out mignation in the spring, made spring post-spawning outmigrations. The majority of adults, those not outmigrating in the spring, remained in discrete locations characterized as deep, low velocity pools for extended periods during the summer and early fall. Fall outmigration occurred when fish left summer holding locations, traveled rapidly downstream, and exited the river system. High river discharge due to the onset of winter rainstorms and freshets appear to be the key environmental cue instigating the fall outmigration.  相似文献

The extent of mtDNA length variation and heteroplasmy as well as DNA sequences of the control region and two tRNA genes were determined for four North American sturgeon species: Acipenser transmontanus, A. medirostris, A. fulvescens and A. oxyrhnychus. Across the Continental Divide, a division in the occurrence of length variation and heteroplasmy was observed that was concordant with species biogeography as well as with phylogenies inferred from restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) of whole mtDNA and pairwise comparisons of unique sequences of the control region. In all species, mtDNA length variation was due to repeated arrays of 78-82-bp sequences each containing a D-loop strand synthesis termination associated sequence (TAS). Individual repeats showed greater sequence conservation within individuals and species rather than between species, which is suggestive of concerted evolution. Differences in the frequencies of multiple copy genomes and heteroplasmy among the four species may be ascribed to differences in the rates of recurrent mutation. A mechanism that may offset the high rate of mutation for increased copy number is suggested on the basis that an increase in the number of functional TAS motifs might reduce the frequency of successfully initiated H-strand replications.  相似文献

Previous molecular diet analysis identified lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens, Rafinesque, 1817) DNA in the gastrointestinal tracts of stream-resident rainbow darters (Etheostoma caeruleum, Storer, 1845) during the egg incubation, free embryo, and larval drift stages. The objectives of this experimental study were to: (a) quantify levels of predation by rainbow darters on lake sturgeon at the egg and free-embryo stages; and (b) evaluate whether predation varied as a function of substrate size and rainbow darter body size. We conducted experimental trials in 23-L polycarbonate tanks 0.41 m (L) × 0.33 m (W) × 0.30 m (D) with a standardized benthic area of 0.14 m2. The tanks were randomly assigned one of two different substrate size classes: large rock (51.35 mm ± 0.91 mm) or small rock (27.68 mm ± 0.57 mm). We stocked individual rainbow darter, which were deprived of feed for 48 hr, with lake sturgeon (133 individuals/m2) in each of 12 replicates per ontogenetic stage and substrate type. The number of surviving lake sturgeon was quantified following a 24-hr predation exposure period. We used a generalized linear model with a binomial distribution to assess the influence of ontogenetic stage, substrate size, and rainbow darter body size on proportional lake sturgeon survival. Predation on lake sturgeon occurred at both egg (6.25 ± 1.16 individuals, mean ± 2SE) and free embryo (3.08 ± 1.08 individuals, mean ± 2SE) stages. Egg proportional survival was generally lower than at the free embryo stage in both substrate sizes; however, free embryo proportional survival was greater in small substrate trials. Rainbow darter total length did not affect the probability of lake sturgeon survival at either developmental stage. Results demonstrate that rainbow darters prey on early ontogenetic stages of lake sturgeon, corroborating previous results based on genetic diet analysis. Results fill a major knowledge gap concerning the vulnerability of pre-drift sturgeon to predation by an abundant river resident species that was previously discounted as a predator for early ontogenetic stages of lake sturgeon due to its small body size.  相似文献

Feeding day-old White Leghorn male chicks 9 different diets for 4 weeks with the orthogonal composite design, we studied the relationship among dietary protein, energy levels and chick’s responses.

The ellipsoid relationship has been found fitted to describe the relationship between dietary composition and weight gain or feed efficiency of chicks, whereas declined planes are fitted to show the relationship between dietary composition and carcass protein or fat levels of chicks. Dietary protein level has great influence on nitrogen retention, but dietary energy level has little effect.

Zinc (Zn) is an essential mineral for animal development and function. A study was carried out to evaluate the effect of sex and dietary organic zinc (OZ) on growth performance, carcass traits, tissue mineral content, and blood parameters of broiler chickens. A total of 240 1-day-old male and 240 female broiler chicks (Cobb × Cobb) were assigned to two dietary levels of OZ (2 × 2 factorial) with six replicates per treatment (20 birds/replicate pen). The OZ supplementation levels were 0 and 25 ppm. Results showed that OZ supplementation did not affect the growth performance of male and female broilers, but the males showed significantly better (P < 0.05) growth performance than females did. Similarly, OZ supplementation did not affect the thickness of both the back and thigh skin of male and female broilers; however, males had thicker skin than females. Dietary OZ supplementation did not affect collagen contents in the skin and meat samples. Male broilers had higher skin collagen contents than females, but no sex difference was found in meat collagen contents. OZ supplementation did not affect the shear force values of skin and meat samples. Male broilers had higher shear force values of back skin than females, but not in the meat samples. Dietary OZ supplementation increased (P < 0.05) the thigh meat Zn content in both sexes. The plasma Ca content was significantly (P < 0.05) increased by dietary OZ supplementation; however, other blood parameters were not affected by dietary OZ supplementation. Males had higher plasma glucose and cholesterol content than females. It is concluded that dietary OZ supplementation at the level of 25 ppm does not affect the growth performance and skin quality of broiler chickens but increases the Zn content in thigh meat and Ca content in plasma of broiler chickens. Male broilers had better growth performance and skin quality than females.  相似文献

Fifty-one Simmental crossbred steers (357.0±16.5 kg) were used to compare a standard total mix ration (TMR) with variants on animal performance, ruminal fermentation, blood biochemical parameters, and carcass characteristics. Corn grain and cotton seed meal were partially replaced by ensiled mulberry leaves (EML) or sun-dried mulberry fruit pomace (SMFP). Experimental diets had similar amounts of crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and metabolizable energy (ME). Animals were divided into three groups: control group (CONT), 8% EML group, and 6.3% SMFP group. Performance, including average daily weight gain (ADG), and dry matter intake (DMI), was measured. Blood and rumen samples were collected at the end of the experiment (16 weeks). There were no differences in final body weight (P = 0.743), ADG (P = 0.425), DMI (P = 0.642), or ADG/DMI (P = 0.236) between the groups. There were no differences (P = 0.2024) in rumen pH values; ammonia N was lower (P = 0.0076) in SMFP than in the EML and CONT groups. There were differences in the concentrations of total and individual volatile fatty acids, while no differences were determined in blood biochemical parameters (i.e., plasma glucose, urea concentrations, triglycerides, total protein, insulin, IgG, alanine transaminase, and aspartate aminotransferase, P ≥ 0.098). No differences were observed in carcass characteristics (P ≥ 0.513), tenderness (P = 0.844), adipose and lean color values (P ≥ 0.149), and chemical composition (P ≥ 0.400); however, intramuscular fat was lower in the EML and SMFP groups compared to the CONT animals (P = 0.034). In conclusion, diets supplemented with these two mulberry products in an isocaloric and isonitrogenous manner have similar effects to corn grain and cotton seed meals on steer performance, blood biochemical parameters and carcass characteristics, with the exception of ruminal VFA concentrations and lower intramuscular fat content.  相似文献

Concern regarding the spread of silver carp (Hypopthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Aristichthysc nobilis) through the Illinois River has prompted the development of an Acoustic Fish Deterrent (AFD) system. The application of this technology has resulted in a need to understand the auditory physiology of fish other than the target species, in order to minimise the effect of the AFD barrier on the ecology of indigenous fish populations. To this end, both the structures involved in sound reception and the hearing abilities of the paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) and the lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) are studied here using a combination of morphological and physiological approaches, revealing that both fish are responsive to sounds ranging in frequency from 100 to 500 Hz. The lowest hearing thresholds from both species were acquired from frequencies in a bandwidth of between 200 and 300 Hz, with higher thresholds at 100 and 500 Hz. The rationale for studying hearing in P. spathula and A. fulvescens in particular, is the value placed on them by both the commercial caviar producing industry and by the recreational fisheries sector. The hearing abilities of twelve P. spathula and twelve A. fulvescens were tested in sound fields dominated by either sound pressure or particle motion, with the results showing that acipenseriform fish are responsive to the motion of water particles in a sound field, rather than the sound pressure component. In this study, we measure the intensity of the sound field required to evoke threshold responses using a pressure sensitive hydrophone, as pressure dominated sound fields are the most audible acoustic condition for specialists like H. molitrix and A. nobilis (the target species). The results of the auditory examination clearly show that P. spathula and A. fulvescens are not sensitive to sound pressure, and will therefore have a significantly higher deterrent threshold than H. molitrix and A. nobilis in a pressure dominated sound field.  相似文献

为研究西伯利亚鲟(Acipenser baerii)对急性热应激的抗逆机理, 将体质量为(155.4719.50) g的鱼从17.5 ℃迅速转至27.5 ℃水中, 在1h和3h取样测定HSP70 mRNA表达变化、血清皮质醇和非特异性免疫指标。结果显示: 急性热应激时鳃、脾和脑的HSP70 mRNA表达量升高, 具有组织特异性, 热应激1h时鳃的表达量升高最快(P0.05), 3h时保持1h时的表达水平; 脾和脑热应激1h时表达量变化不显著, 在1h至3h时升高较快, 并且脑组织的表达量升高最快(P0.05)。热应激1h时血清皮质醇(Cortisol)含量迅速升高(P0.05), 之后快速回落。脾脏巨噬细胞呼吸暴发在热应激1h时显著升高(P0.05), 3h时降低。血清补体C3在1h时略有升高, 3h时显著性降低(P0.05)。血清溶菌酶活性(LZM activity)先升高后降低差异不显著。血清超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)活力随热应激时间延长逐渐降低, 3h时显著降低(P0.05)。血清丙二醛(MDA)含量随热应激时间延长逐渐降低, 差异不显著。以上结果表明: 1h的短暂急性应激增强了西伯利亚鲟的非特异性免疫, 3h的应激使免疫力和抗氧化能力显著下降; 在热应激过程中, HSP70表达升高, 其中鳃组织最快, 起到应激保护作用, 提高了机体热耐受力。    相似文献
