The harmful effect of molybdenum on animals is well established, but there is comparatively little knowledge of the conditions in which molybdenum is poisonous to plants. Obvious differences in response to molybdenum poisoning in different soils have been previously noted, but no adequate explanation has been put forward.
Tomatoes grown in ordinary loam showed little outward sign of poisoning with heavy doses of sodium molybdate, but some depression of crop occasionally occurred, especially when the dose was divided into early and late treatments. The response varied with season and variety. On certain light and fen soils the plants were killed at an early stage with the heavier dressing of molybdate, and seriously injured with the lighter dose, the leaves showing the golden colour characteristic of molybdenum poisoning in various plants.
The reaction of different crops varied considerably in the same soil with similar treatments. On old cucumber soil tomatoes showed no sign of toxicity even with the heavy dressing, flax was progressively damaged with increasing doses, while Solanum nodiflorum was most seriously affected even with the lighter dressing of molybdate. It was impossible to predict the reaction between soil, poison and crop without actual experiment.
The growth of flax was greatly impeded on a manganese-deficient fen soil, and the molybdenum toxicity was masked in consequence. When the deficiency was corrected the poisonous effect of molybdenum on this soil was very marked, even with the lower dressing.
The composting of loam with peat usually, but not invariably, resulted in a reduction of the toxicity of molybdenum. The different results obtained with several crops on a variety of soils still yield no definite clue to the factors which determine the relative toxicity of molybdenum to plant growth and such points as soil acidity, response to climatic conditions and nutritive deficiencies are among those which need further investigation.  相似文献

视觉对于动物的生存和行为来说是非常重要的。虽然果蝇幼虫的视觉神经系统在组织结构上比成虫简单,但是也具有一定的复杂性和多样性。在最近几年中,随着对果蝇幼虫视觉系统功能的研究取得重要进展,我们对于果蝇幼虫视觉系统的认识更加丰富了。果蝇幼虫视觉系统的结构中,最初级的光感受神经元包括三类,一类是BO/BN(Bolwig's organ/Bolwig's nerve),一类是表达感光分子CRY(cryptochrome)的神经元,另外一类是Ⅳ型DA(classⅣdendriticarborization)神经元;果蝇幼虫视觉系统的次级神经元主要是光节律相关的侧神经元(lateralneurons,LN),它表达Per(period)、Tim(timeless)及Pdf(pigment dispersion factor)等节律相关的蛋白分子;而第三级神经元包括更为下游的、表达果蝇促胸腺激素且直接调控幼虫光偏好的NP394神经元。这三级神经元构成了我们现在所了解的果蝇幼虫视觉神经系统的基本框架。  相似文献

In this study of the electroretinograms of dragonflies (adults and nymphs) the objectives were to determine the number of classes of photoreceptors present in the visual system and to allocate these to particular morphological regions. There are probably five classes of photoreceptors present with peak sensitivities near 550, 530, 518, 420, and < 380 mµ. The dorsal ocelli contain two classes (518 mµ and < 380 mµ). The ventral (anterior) ommatidia of the adult compound eye contain at least two classes (near 518 mµ and < 380 mµ) and probably a third class (near 550 mµ). The dorsal ommatidia of the adult compound eye contain one class (420 mµ) and possibly another class (< 380 mµ). The compound eye of the nymph contains one class (530 mµ) and possibly another class (420 mµ).  相似文献

The decrease in growth rate of the root system or complete cessationof its growth in developed, fruit-bearing tomato plants areknown phenomena. It has been suggested that a limited supplyof carbohydrates to this organ, due to its relative weaknessin competition with the flowers and developing fruitlets isthe main cause for these disorders. This theory was tested inthe present study with plants grown in an aerohydroponic systemup to the appearance of 12–13 trusses per plant, 172 dafter transplanting. The changes in the contents of carbohydratesin the various organs during this period were monitored. Theconcentrations of soluble sugars and starch in the leaves increasedwith the increase in truss number. The upper stem was foundto contain more carbohydrates than the lower stem, while nosignificant changes in the concentration of these compoundscould be detected in the roots throughout the experiment. Nevertheless,120–130 d after transplanting, the roots of the plants,bearing five to six trusses and two to three inflorescences,ceased growing and remained at the same or a slightly reducedsize for another 40–50 d. Calculations show that at thestage of five to six trusses, 38 g total soluble sugars and35 g starch were stored in the vegetative organs. Therefore,it seems unlikely that carbon deficiency caused by the competitionwith the reproductive organs (mainly developing fruits), affectedthe root growth. The action of abscisic acid on the kinetics of auxin transport through Zea mays L. (cv. Goudster) coleoptiles has been investigated. Abscisic acid applied simultaneously with indoleacetic acid-2-14C in the donor block reduced the transport intensity without materially affecting the basipetal velocity or the uptake. No effect on acropetal transport was observed. The data have been used to discuss the similarities in effects of abscisic acid and visible radiation and a hypothesis is proposed to explain the phenomena of phototropism.  相似文献

Interactions between visual and motor spaces were studied using tracking movements in a virtual action space paradigm. Disturbances of the regular structure of the visual space was done using computer modeling of the Hering visual illusion. The distribution of the cinematic characteristics of tracking movements in the coordinate system, associated with the target of the motor task, revealed the dominance of topological characteristics over metric characteristics during the formation of the motor field. Factors producing the appropriate topology were determined. It was found that motor space is more susceptible to these factors than visual field.  相似文献

Sepsis caused by Gram-negative bacterial infection is characterized by extensive inflammatory cytokine production, which leads to multiple organ failure and a high lethality rate. Therefore, compounds that are able to alleviate profound inflammatory responses may have therapeutic potential in relation to sepsis. Quercetin, one of the flavonoids found widely in the human diet, has been reported to have many health benefits, but the mechanisms underlying its biological effects remain obscure. In the present study, our aim was to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which quercetin inhibits lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced pro-inflammatory cytokine production and to evaluate the capacity of quercetin to attenuate the mortality rate in a mice model of lethal sepsis. Our results show that quercetin significantly attenuates LPS-induced production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in RAW264.7 macrophages. The LPS-stimulated phosphorylations of the inhibitors of κB kinase (IKKs), Akt, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) are also inhibited by quercetin. Quercetin causes a significant reduction in the phosphorylation and degradation of inhibitor of κBα (IκBα) and in the nuclear level of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), the latter being associated with decreased NF-κB binding activity. Most importantly, acute administration of quercetin reduces the lethality rate and circulating levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in C57BL/6J mice with endotoxemia induced by LPS, whereas chronic dietary supplementation with quercetin shows no inhibitory effect on serum TNF-α and IL-1β levels. These findings provide clues that quercetin may be a promising agent for the prevention of systemic inflammatory diseases such as sepsis.  相似文献

Vision plays a crucial role in human interaction by facilitating the coordination of one''s own actions with those of others in space and time. While previous findings have demonstrated that vision determines the default use of reference frames, little is known about the role of visual experience in coding action-space during joint action. Here, we tested if and how visual experience influences the use of reference frames in joint action control. Dyads of congenitally-blind, blindfolded-sighted, and seeing individuals took part in an auditory version of the social Simon task, which required each participant to respond to one of two sounds presented to the left or right of both participants. To disentangle the contribution of external—agent-based and response-based—reference frames during joint action, participants performed the task with their respective response (right) hands uncrossed or crossed over one another. Although the location of the auditory stimulus was completely task-irrelevant, participants responded overall faster when the stimulus location spatially corresponded to the required response side than when they were spatially non-corresponding: a phenomenon known as the social Simon effect (SSE). In sighted participants, the SSE occurred irrespective of whether hands were crossed or uncrossed, suggesting the use of external, response-based reference frames. Congenitally-blind participants also showed an SSE, but only with uncrossed hands. We argue that congenitally-blind people use both agent-based and response-based reference frames resulting in conflicting spatial information when hands are crossed and, thus, canceling out the SSE. These results imply that joint action control functions on the basis of external reference frames independent of the presence or (transient/permanent) absence of vision. However, the type of external reference frames used for organizing motor control in joint action seems to be determined by visual experience.  相似文献

Extensive experimental evidence has established a significant role of calciferol in the maintenance of normal calcium homeostasis. Present knowledge indicates that vitamin D3 must first be converted to 25-OH-D3 and then to 1,25(OH)2D3, the most active known form of the steroid. Many of the factors regulating the rate of production of this last steroid from its precurser have been evaluated, and the concept that vitamin D functions as a steroid hormone seems to be well established.Deranged action of calciferol, caused by impaired metabolism of the steroid or through altered sensitivity of target tissues, may be involved in the pathophysiology of several disease states with abnormal calcium metabolism.It is noted that liver disease, osteomalacia due to anticonvulsant therapy, chronic renal failure, hypophosphatemic rickets, hypoparathyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis and idiopathic hypercalciuria have possible relation to alterations in metabolism or action of vitamin D.The future clinical availability of 1,25(OH)2D3 and other analogs of this steroid may offer potential therapeutic benefit in the treatment of certain of the disease entities discussed.  相似文献

Roots of Zea mays L. developed more aerenchyma (cortical gas-filledspace) when partially deficient in oxygen (3 kPa) than whensupplied with air (20·8 kPa oxygen) in association withfaster production of ethylene (ethene). The possibility wastested that the additional ethylene production resulted fromdecreases in spermidine (spd) and spermine (spm) which share,with ethylene, a common precursor, S-adenosylmethionine. However,no decreases in spd and spm were seen in root tissue up to 4d-old. Removing oxygen completely also had little effect onspd and spm, but strongly suppressed both ethylene productionand aerenchyma formation. Partial oxygen shortage (3 kPa) increased the concentrationof putrescine (put), the precursor of spd and spm. This increasewas not a response to the extra ethylene formed by such rootssince ethylene treatment did no reproduce the effect. Applicationof inhibitors of put biosynthesis, difluoromethylarginine anddifluoromethylornithine, led to increased aerenchyma formation.Exogenous put inhibited the development of aerenchyma whilestimulating rather than inhibiting ethylene production, whentested in either air or 3 kPa oxygen. The ability to resolve two closely spaced cutaneous stimuli presumably depends upon the degree of overlap between the two populations of responding neurons. The degree of overlap is determined by receptive field (RF) geometry and location, and by interactive factors such as lateral inhibition. In this paper, we first consider some aspects of RFs that would be expected to influence two-point acuity.

In some somatosensory brain regions, relatively few RFs overlap the body midline. As would be expected, discrimination is enhanced for two points straddling the backbone. This does not simply reflect a mediolateral gradient of acuity, as we found higher acuity laterally.

On the limbs, where RFs are elongated along the length of the limb, transverse two-point acuity was greater than longitudinal acuity. However, on the back, where RFs are fairly round, there was an even larger orientation effect, with two-point acuity greater for stimuli longitudinal than for stimuli transverse to the spine.

Thus, the substantial variation of two-point acuity with stimulus orientation on the back cannot be explained by RF geometry alone. We discuss the possibility that differences in lateral inhibition and degree of similarity in dermatomal composition contribute to the observed stimulus orientation effects.  相似文献
