The possible role of serotonin in the rhythmicity of the crop of Aplysia dactylomela

The isolated perfused crop of Aplysia dactylomela was used to assess the effects of applied serotonin on 1st order small phasic contractions, 2nd order large tonic contractions, and 3rd order slow changes in tonus. Very low concentrations of serotonin may potentiate spontaneous contractions. Concentrations of the order of 10(-7) M serotonin may regularize "beating" of the crop by suppressing large tonic contractions while potentiating phasic contractions. Concentrations higher than 10(-5) M serotonin induce prolonged tonic contracture.     

Studies on the Karyotypes and the Cytogeography of Cupressus (Cupressaceae)

The present paper deals with the karyotype analysis of 10 species of Cupressus including C. arizonica, C. bakeri ssp. mathewsii, C. chengiana, C. duclouxiana, C. funebris, C. goveniana, C. lusitanica, C. macrocarpa, C. pygmaea and C. sargentii. Except for C. arizonica, C. chengiana and C. macrocarpa they are all reported for the first time.The karyotype formula of the 10 species is K(2n)=22=22m which belongs to Stebbins'1A type. After making comparison among the karyotypes of 13 representive species in Cupressus, combined with data from geography, fossil, palaeogeography and palaeoclimate, the author thinks that C. sempervirens in Mediterranean region might be the most promitive one, the species in East Asia-China intermediate, those in North America advanced and C.lusitanica in Mexico and Guatemala the most advanced. The genus may have originated in the Mediterranean during the Jurassic or even earlier and then migrated from East Asia to North America via the Beringia in the Miocene or Pliocene. On the systematic position of Taxaceae from the embryological and anatomical studies

Florin has suggested that the Taxaceae should be separated from the Coniferales to erect an order of its own. His basic argument is that the ovule of the taxads is terminal while the ovules of the conifers are lateral. Florin's idea was accepted by many taxonomists and some of them make an even higher taxon as Taxopsida. The present paper deals with the systematic position of Taxaceae from the embryological and anatomical studies in comparison with those of other members of the Coniferales. The extant Taxaceae includes five genera, namely, Taxus, Pseudotaxus, Austrotaxus, Amentotaxus and Torreya. The mature pollen grains of Taxaceae contain two ceils (Torreya) or one cell only (Taxus, Pseudotaxus and Austrotaxus). No prothailial cells are formed. Two sperms are of unequal size. The number of free nuclei formed in the female gametophyte is 256(-512). The arehegonia vary from I to 25, with 2 to 8 as the usual range. The proembryo of Torreya forms 4 or 8 free nuclei, while all other genera of the Taxaceae usually contain 16(-32). Cleavage polyembryony is present in Torreya, but absent in other genera. The proembryogeny belongs to the standard type of the Coniferales. The bark of the Taxaceae possesses erystalliferous fibers. No crystals are formed in parenehyma Rays are homogeneous and consist of ray parenchyma cells only. Growth rings of the wood in Taxaceae are distinct. Axial tracheids with bordered pits usually uniseriate, occasionally paired or biseriate, with spiral thickenings. Wood parenchyma is present in Amentotaxus and Austrotaxus, but absent in Pseudotaxus, Taxus and Torreya. Cross-field pits cupressoid. Resin canals and ray tracheids are absent. Considering Taxaceae as a natural taxon each of the main embryological and anatomical characters is to be seen in other families of the Coniferales though the combination is unique, making it a distinct family. Many differences between Taxaceae and other families of the Coniferales fall within the range of the variation in the conifers. However, Pinaceae is a rather specialized family among the Coniferales. Thus, the difference between Taxaceae and Pinaceae is quite striking. Florin agreed with Wilde (1944) that some species of Podoca rpus with single ovule are derived from that with multiple ovulate cone and represent the last stage of reduction of the cone. On the other hand, the taxads with their terminally borne ovule are considered as primitive. It is obvious that Florin's explanation is hardly convincing. Many authors such as Chamberlain (1935), Takhtajan (1953) and others pointed out that single ovulate cone of the Taxaceae was very probably derived from the one with multiple ovulate cone. Recently Keng (1969) considered that the Taxaceae is closely related to Cephalotaxaceae on one hand and connected with the Podocarpaeeae by way of Phyllocladus on the other hand. On the distribution of the nucleotides in the seven completely sequenced DNAs

Several Markov chain models (up to fourth order) have been fitted to the sequences of the seven DNAs presented in Fuchs et al. (1980). Two methods for determining the order of Markov chain are applied to the data. The two methods lead to different conclusions and we dicuss these discrepancies. When the distribution of the nucleotides in a DNA sequence is investigated, it is suggested that the study on the order of the Markov model should be supplemented with additional analysis.     

The Geography of the Campanulaceae: On the Distribution Centres

The distribution pattern of 44 recognized genera in the Campanulaceae(s．str．) was analysed．Genera-contour lines were constructed,which showed three centres of frequency of genera：the Eastern Asiatic region,Cape region and the Mediterranean region． Thirteen genera are found in E．Asia：Adenophora,Asyneuma,Campanula,Campanumoea, Codonopsis,Cyananthus,Cyclocodom,Echinocodon Hong,Homocodon Hong,Leptocodon, Peracarpa,Platycodon,and Wahlenbergia． Twelve of the 13 genera (except for Echinocodon) can be found in a small area of SW．China (E．＆ N．Yunnan,SW．Sichuan and SW．Guizhou)．This is the most concentrated region of genera in the family．The Cape region has 10 genera: Craterocapsa,Merciera,Microcodon,Rhigiophyllum,Prismatocarpus,Roella,Siphocodon,Teilera,Treichelia and Wahlenbergia．Although the figure is not very high,the region is also concentrated one of genera,considering its small area．The last region possesses 14 genera：Adenophora,Asyneuma,Campanula,Edraianthus,Feeria,Jasione,Legousia,Mindium,Petromarula,Physoplexis,Phyteuma,Symphyandra,Trachelium and Wahlenbergia．The region is relatively large and the genera are rather evenly distributed;a relatively concentrated area is the Balkan Peninsula,where there are nine genera．The three centres totally has 32 genera,taking up 73 percent of the total number of genera in the family． Kolakovsky's(1987)classification system of the Campanulaceae,the only one for the whole family since Schonland(1889),could not be accepted．Instead,the present author tentatively recognizes six generic groups in the family,i．e．the Cyananthus Group,with two subgroups, the Cyananthus Subgroup and the Codonopsis Subgroup; the Platycodon Group, with two subgroups, the Platycodon Subgroup and the Campanumoea Subgroup; the Ostrowskia Group; the Wahlenbergia Group, with four subgroups, the Wahlenbergia Subgroup, the Prismatocarpus Subgroup,the Siphocodon Subgroup and the Merciera Subgroup, the Jasione Group;the Campanula Group, with three subgroups, the Campanula Subgroup,the Mindium Subgroup and the Musschia Subgroup. It is found that E. Asia possesses four generic groups consisting of six subgroups, the highest among the three centres. Therefore,E. Asia is the centre of form diversity in the Campanulaceae. The evolutionary trends of 26 characters in the family were inferred based on the analysis of the outgroup, Polemoniaceae, and the reference to the related families, Cyphiaceae and Lobeliaceae. The character primitiveness index was calculated for each genus. The most primitive genus, Cyananthus, and most of relatively primitive genera are concentrated in E. Asia, with the highest average character primitiveness index of genera. The region could be considered as the centre of primitive forms, and the other two regions as the differentiation centres. SW. China (E. ＆ N. Yunnan, SW. Sichuan and SW. Guizhou), where 12 genera are found, is so-called Kan-Dian Old Land, and has been stable even since the Paleozoic,providing a con-dition for the differentiation of the primitive forms in the Campanulaceae. The present author speculates that the differentiation and dispersal of primitive forms in the family took place not later than the end of the Cretaceous and the family originated ever earlier, but he considers that the origin place of this family can hardly be inferred, considering the distribution pattern of the family Scutcheon noninitial, exuvial touchiness alitizing. Various interpretations of the holothurian system and phylogeny are critically reviewed and the main characters that form the basis of the existing systematics of this group are analyzed. A system of holothurians based on thorough analysis of their morphology and anatomy is proposed. Four subclasses are recognized in the class Holothuroidea: Arthrochirotacea, Synaptacea, Elpidiacea, and Holothuriacea. The subclass Holothuriacea includes four orders: Aspidochirotida with five families; Dendrochirotida with 15 families (14 extant and one extinct); Molpadiida with three families; Gephyrothuriida with one family and two genera Gephyrothuria and Hadalothuria. The order Gephyrothuriida is re-established. The order Dactylochirotida Pawson et Fell, 1965 is synonymized under the order Dendrochirotida. A new suborder Cucumariina and new family Mesothuriidae are described. The family Vaneyellidae is synonymized under the family Cucumariidae. Four subfamilies are classified as families: Cladolabidae, Sclerothyonidae, Monilipsolidae, and Thyonidiidae.     

Pollen Morphology of the Betulaceae

Pollen grains of 6 genera, including 36 species, of the Betulaceae, were examined under LM, SEM and TEM.Their morphological characters are described and three types of pollen are distinguished here. The evidence from pollen morphological characters does not support Hutchinson's (1973)and Dahlgren's (1983)treatments which divided the Betulaceae into two families: Corylaceae ( including Corylus, Ostryopsis, Carpinus and Ostrya) and Betulaceae (including Alnus and Betula). The author agrees with Abbe's (1974)division of the Betulaceae into three tribes with one modification that Ostryopsis is transferred from the tribe Coryleae to the tribe Carpineae. Determinants of the higher order association of the restriction factor TRIM5alpha and other tripartite motif (TRIM) proteins

Many tripartite motif (TRIM) proteins self-associate, forming dimers and higher order complexes. For example, dimers of TRIM5α, a host factor that restricts retrovirus infection, assemble into higher order arrays on the surface of the viral capsid, resulting in an increase in avidity. Here we show that the higher order association of different TRIM proteins exhibits a wide range of efficiencies. Homologous association (self-association) was more efficient than the heterologous association of different TRIM proteins, indicating that specificity determinants of higher order self-association exist. To investigate the structural determinants of higher order self-association, we studied TRIM mutants and chimeras. These studies revealed the following: 1) the RING domain contributes to the efficiency of higher order self-association, which enhances the binding of TRIM5α to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) capsid; 2) the RING and B-box 2 domains work together as a homologous unit to promote higher order association of dimers; 3) dimerization is probably required for efficient higher order self-association; 4) the Linker 2 region contributes to higher order self-association, independently of effects of Linker 2 changes on TRIM dimerization; and 5) for efficiently self-associating TRIM proteins, the B30.2(SPRY) domain is not required for higher order self-association. These results support a model in which both ends of the core TRIM dimer (RING-B-box 2 at one end and Linker 2 at the other) contribute to the formation of higher order arrays.

The nomenclature and taxonomy of Podogonium Heer 1857, nom. illeg., a legume fossil widely distributed in the Neogene of Eurasia, were briefly reviewed. Herendeen's viewpoint that Podogonium Heer 1857 is a later synonym of Podocarpium A. Braun ex Stizenberger 1851 is supported. The genus possibly contains only one species, Podocarpium podocarpum (A. Braun) Herendeen 1992. Podogonium Heer 1857 should be no longer used as a conserved name. Structural analysis of xyloglucans in the primary cell walls of plants in the subclass Asteridae

The structures of xyloglucans from several plants in the subclass Asteridae were examined to determine how their structures vary in different taxonomic orders. Xyloglucans, solubilized from plant cell walls by a sequential (enzymatic and chemical) extraction procedure, were isolated, and their structures were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. All campanulids examined, including Lactuca sativa (lettuce, order Asterales), Tenacetum ptarmiciflorum (dusty miller, order Asterales), and Daucus carota (carrot, order Apiales), produce typical xyloglucans that have an XXXG-type branching pattern and contain alpha-d-Xylp-, beta-D-Galp-(1-->2)-alpha-D-Xylp-, and alpha-L-Fucp-(1-->2)-beta-D-Galp-(1-->2)-alpha-D-Xylp- side chains. However, the lamiids produce atypical xyloglucans. For example, previous analyses showed that Capsicum annum (pepper) and Lycopersicon esculentum (tomato), two species in the order Solanales, and Olea europaea (olive, order Lamiales) produce xyloglucans that contain arabinosyl and galactosyl residues, but lack fucosyl residues. The XXGG-type xyloglucans produced by Solanaceous species are less branched than the XXXG-type xyloglucan produced by Olea europaea. This study shows that Ipomoea pupurea (morning glory, order Solanales), Ocimum basilicum (basil, order Lamiales), and Plantago major (plantain, order Lamiales) all produce xyloglucans that lack fucosyl residues and have an unusual XXGGG-type branching pattern in which the basic repeating core contains five glucose subunits in the backbone. Furthermore, Neruim oleander (order Gentianales) produces an XXXG-type xyloglucan that contains arabinosyl, galactosyl, and fucosyl residues. The appearance of this intermediate xyloglucan structure in oleander has implications regarding the evolutionary development of xyloglucan structure and its role in primary plant cell walls.

The ontogeny and maturation of the olfactory system in the workerbee have been studied using a combination of neurophysiological (first order neurones) and neuroanatomical techniques (second order neurones). EAG recordings show that normal maturation of the olfactory response takes place during the first 4 days following emergence, and is closely related to the sensory environment during the same period. The synaptic organization of first order and second order neurones of the antennal afferent pathway (analyzed at the level of the glomeruli in the deutocerebrum) is essentially complete three days before emergence. These results are discussed in relation to a possible role of the sensory environment during the period from 3 days before until 8 days after emergence.     

An extension of the steady-state approximation of the kinetics of enzyme-containing systems

An extension of the steady-state approximation of multi-enzyme systems is obtained, which can also be applied when enzyme concentrations are of the same order of magnitude as substrate concentrations. This extension contains as a first order approximation the extension given by Vergonet and Berendsen. The mathematical procedure however is different and avoids difficulties inherent in their theory.     

The Geographical Distribution and the System of Aristolochiaceae

The geographical distribution, the center of distribution and differentiation of Aristolochiaceae, its subdivision and evolutionary trends are discussed in this paper. I. The systematic positions, the distribution patterns and the relationships among six genera in the family Aristolochiaceae, i.e. Saruma, Asarum, Thottea, Holostylis, Aristolochia and Euglypha, are discussed, and according to the floristic analysis two patterns and five subpatterns of distribution of the six genera in the family are recognized. They are: 1) Temperate pattern: a. Eastern Asia (China): Saruma; b. North Temperate (disjunct in Europe, E. Asia and N. America): Asarum. 2) Tropical pattern: c. Tropical Asia: Thottea; d. Tropical America: Holostylis, Euglypha; e. Pantropic: Aristolochia. 2. The floristic analysis of species in the family shows that the region, the richest both in genera, species and endemic species, as Takhtajan's (1969) work pointed out, is East Asia (see Table 1); and the species in the Old World, especially in East Asia, are primitive elements. Four genera and 91 species of this family occur in China, and especially more primitive elements are found from the Hengduan Mountains to South China, as C. Y. Wu's (1979) work mentioned (see Table 2). 3. The primary center of the distribution and differentiation of this family is East Asia (especially in the region from the Hengduan Mountains to C. and S. China), since four genera and 214 species are found in Asia, and three genera and 73 species of the family, including the most primitive genus Saruma and the more primitive genus Asarum occur in the region from the Hengduan Mountains to C. and S. China. The secondary center of distribution and differentiation is Tropical America, because species found there are only relatively advanced ones. For this reason this family should be considered as a mainly tropical family rather than a typically tropical one, though 80 percent of the total species of the family are now distributed in the tropics. 4. The evolutionary trends in the family are: the perianth from actinomorphic to zygomorphic, from free to united, from cup-like to tubular; stamens from indefinite to definite, from free to united with pistil in the gynostemium; and the fruit from follicular capsule to capsule. The Geographical Distribution and Floristic Features of the Orchid Flora in the Mt. Emei in China

Situated in western part of Sichuan Province, 29°30'N, 103°20'E, the sacred Mt. Emei is one of the well-known large mountains in China. Its summit is about 3100 m above sea level with a relative height of 2550 m. The orchid flora in Mt. Emei so far known comprises 47 genera and 109 species, among which 21 are epiphytes, 83 terrestrials and 5 saprophytes (Table 1.) 1. The vertical distribution of the orchid flora in the mountain. The terrestrial orchids also mainly occur at the lower region below Jiulaodong and Chudian (1800 m alt.), where there are 54 species, most of which are found at even lower part of the mountain, below Hongchunping and Wanniansi (1100 m alt.). The tropicas orchids in the mountain, such as Cleisostoma, Vanda, Holcoglossum, Tropiclia, Thunia, Mischobulbum, Ludisia, Anoectochilus, Odontochilus, etc. all grow only at the lower part of the mountain below Hongchunping and Wanniansi (1100 m alt.). 2. The floristic features of the orchid flora in the Mt. Emei. (1) The orchid flora in the mountain so far known comprises 47 genera (over 2/3 of the total orchid genera in Sichuan) and 109 species (over 1/3 of the total orchid species in Sichuan). The Mt. Emei is very rich in orchid species, as compared with neighbouring mountains of same magnitude, such as Mt. Shennonjia in western Hubei, Qin Ling in southern Shaanxi, Jinfo Shan in south-eastern Sichuan, and Erlang Shan in western Sichuan. (2) The orchids in the mountain are complex in floristic components as indicated below: 1) Twenty seven species, belonging to 18 genera, are widespread, covering the whole East-Asian region. 2) Twenty three species, belonging to 15 genera, are the elements of the Sino-Japanese Subregion. Among them 13 species occur only in Japan and eastern China with the mountain ar the westernmost limit, but the other species extend westwards as far as Kangding and ErLang Shan or Baoxing in Sichuan Province. 3) Forty two species, belonging to 22 genera, are the elements of the Sino-Himala-yan Subregion, with 5 species having their range extending from the Himalayan region eastwards to Mt. Emei. 4) Some tropical genera (8 species), belonging to Indo-Malaysian floristic elements, have the mountain as their northern limit of distribution. The orchid flora of the Mt. Emei contains not only the East-Asian elements, but also some Indo-Malaysian elements, though its composition is mainly of the temperate and subtropical Eastern Asian (Sino-Japanese) ones. (3) The orchid flora in the mountain is characterized by geographical vicariation and differentiation. There are nine species-pairs (belong to genera Calanthe, Platanthera, Dendrobium etc.) of the vertical vicarism and six species-pairs (belonging to genera Tropidia, Aneoctochilus, Mischobulbum, Gymnadenia Orchis, etc.) of the horizontal vicarism in the Mt. Emei. Remarkable differentiation of orchid flora in the Mt. Emei is shown in the abundance of endemic elements and as clear geographical vicariation. (4) There are 8 endemic species and one variety of orchids in the Mt. Emei, more abundant than in Xizang. The floristic features of the orchid flora of the Mt.
