1. Although spiders can colonise ecosystems by air, dispersal capabilities differ among spider species. Web‐building spiders are thought to balloon at higher rates than hunting spiders. Spider success in agricultural systems may also depend on habitat preferences. Few studies have examined the success of aerially dispersing spiders in crop systems, and information about the dispersal capabilities of spiders in putative source habitats is limited. 2. Spiders were monitored in the air and on the foliage of vineyards and adjacent oak woodland in order to compare the aerial spider faunas between these disparate habitats and to determine whether highly dispersive species contributed disproportionately to the spider community in vineyards. 3. The results show that most aerially dispersing spiders in both habitats were web‐building dwarf spiders, Erigone spp. (Linyphiidae), although hunting spiders were also well represented in the air, especially in oak woodland. Most woodland spiders in the air appeared to be residents of oak woodland and probably dispersed only short distances. 4. Conversely, only a subset of the aerial spider fauna established in vineyards in high numbers. Spiders that dominated the aerial fauna were under‐represented on vineyard foliage, whereas several hunting spiders dispersed aerially at low rates but dominated vineyard spider composition. 5. These results suggest that aerial dispersal ability may allow spiders to reach crop systems, but that establishment depends on habitat preferences and/or competitive ability.  相似文献

The multi-species ant assemblages were studied in the Crimea Mountains, in 9 types of plant associations in the plateau pastures as well as on the southern and northern slopes of the Main Range. A list of 18 ant species with data on their distribution in biotopes and also layers and the structure of their foraging territories is given. The hierarchical organization of multi-species ant assemblages and different strategies of nest location of the influents depending on the dominant species and its territoriality were investigated. Territoriality of each dominant species was determined by the frequency of foraging areas without nests of other species. Depending on dominant territoriality and the number of dominant species, the following classification of multi-species assemblages is proposed. (1) Monodominant assemblages with weakly expressed territoriality of the dominant species. Low density of the workers of Camponotus aethiops in the foraging territory determines weak interactions with influent species. The settling pattern of the influents shows no evident dependence on the dominant. Weakly expressed territoriality of the dominant allows non-territorial species to exist on the dominant’s territory. Such species were not found in other types of ant assemblages. (2) Monodominant assemblages with strongly expressed territoriality of the dominant species. The settling pattern of the influents shows the subordinate species to avoid those of higher ranks in the hierarchy, thus decreasing the probability of conflicts. The influents settle in the neutral zones as well as in the foraging territory of the dominant, so as to reduce competition with the subdominant species Formica cunicularia. Such a strategy reduces the probability of interspecific conflicts in biotopes with fewer vegetation layers than in the forests. (3) Bidominant assemblages with a variable dendrobiont dominant are typical among forest assemblages. Coexistence of two dominant species is possible when foraging of one of them is completely or partly restricted to one vegetation layer. The subdominant species avoid settling in the foraging territory of the dominant that occupies the same layer. When the dendrobiont dominant Crematogaster schmidti drops out of the assemblage, it (and its role in the assemblage) is replaced by other dendrobiont species Lasius emarginatus which otherwise acts as the 1st order subdominant in C. schmidti assemblages. (4) Polydominant assemblages are characterized by the presence of as many as 3 dominant species, namely Crematogaster schmidti, Camponotus aethiops, and Plagiolepis tauricus. The coexistence of the dominants is possible due to use of different layers (one species is a dendrobiont, the other two are herpeto-hortobionts), different activity periods (round-the-clock in Crematogaster schmidti, night in Camponotus aethiops, and daytime in P. tauricus), and different size classes of the workers (3rd, 5th, and 1st, respectively). The different size classes of workers reduce competition for food. Thus, when the number of dominant species in the assemblage increases, so does the number of mechanisms facilitating their coexistence.  相似文献

Abstract

Faunal skeletal profiles from archaeological assemblages have been long analysed regarding differential transport of carcasses to infer hunting preferences, human mobility, or even dietary stress. However, the existence of several possible accumulating agents, together with the effect of bone attrition, is known to introduce a potential bias, thus hindering the possibilities of meaningful concussions. In order to overcome this problem, several methods were proposed during the late 90s and early 2000’s, although a consensus was not reached, mainly because the different approaches were based on a certain initial hypothesis that significantly affected the output. Building on that previous experience, a new methodological framework is proposed and compared here. Moving from rather deterministic techniques, a Bayesian alternative approach based on a Monte Carlo Markov Chain sampling is presented and applied to several ethnographic and Pleistocene key sites. This new method makes use of the available information to constrain the possible degrees of attrition and carcass processing strategies, leading to easily comparable results.  相似文献

Capsule Habitat associations of breeding birds in a complex coastal environment are clear, interpretable and mostly consistent between years.

Aims To match archive territory mapping data with historical aerial photographs and develop data handling and analytical techniques for the study of bird–habitat relationships.

Methods Bird registrations were digitized from archive British Trust for Ornithology Common Birds Census maps and habitat characteristics from contemporaneous aerial photographs. The resulting maps were overlaid and ranks of habitat preference for 15 species calculated using compositional analysis. Similarity analysis identified species with consistent habitat profiles across years. Cluster analysis identified groups of species with similar patterns of habitat use.

Results A total of 5400 registrations of 15 species in 14 habitats were analysed. Of these, 13 species showed stable patterns of habitat association across survey years. Clear differences and similarities in habitat preferences among the species were identified. The results may be used to inform conservation and management programmes in this and similar environments.

Conclusions Extensive archives of bird survey data can be used to study bird–habitat relationships and to measure the effects of natural and anthropogenic environmental change if contemporaneous aerial photographs can be sourced.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal distribution, abundance and habitat preferences of ostracod assemblages were studied in various habitats of Lake Fehér in Hungary. Of the 20 species Fabaeformiscandona hyalina and Cypridopsis hartwigi are new to Hungary. Significant spatial differences were recorded in the composition and abundance of the Ostracoda assemblages in the different habitats. The most diverse and abundant assemblages were found in the reed-belt, however, the mean abundance of the species differed in the different macrophyte communities of the reed-belt. The species richness and abundance were considerably lower in disturbed sites than in the other habitats. Most of the 20 species showed distinct habitat preferences and ecological tolerances. Especially the presence and coverage of the vegetation and the dissolved oxygen content influenced the distribution and abundance of the species.  相似文献

Capsule In years with low vole abundance birds visited hunting grounds more frequently and for longer.

Aims To describe diet composition, hunting behaviour, habitat choice and reproductive success of urban Kestrels during changing vole abundance.

Methods For five years, we studied the hunting effort of Kestrels in a medium-sized city during the breeding season. Pitfall traps were used for determining vole abundance. Kestrel diet composition was determined from pellet analyses. The number of eggs and offspring was recorded during at least two consecutive visits for each nest and each breeding stage.

Results In contrast to larger European cities, the Common Vole Microtus arvalis was a key part of the Kestrels' diet and did not fluctuate significantly according to vole availability. Reproductive success was quite high and stable throughout years with different vole abundance. In years of low vole abundance, the arrival frequency at hunting grounds and time spent there increased. During years with a low vole population, Kestrels had less hunting success and the rate of successful visits decreased. Therefore, Kestrels probably had to change hunting grounds more frequently. During low vole years Kestrels used less demanding techniques, e.g. perching, despite the lower success of these hunting techniques, to avoid extremely high energetic costs.

Conclusions An increase in hunting helps to maintain a proper diet and consequently reproductive success. Vole abundance did not change dramatically during the study period, as reported by studies from western and northern Europe. The proportion of ruderal habitats on the city periphery is higher than in more monotonous farmland habitats. Ruderal habitats can be important when Kestrels look for mammals other than voles, especially during vole scarcity.  相似文献

There is anecdotal evidence that increasing densities of Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) are associated with declining densities of chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) in the Southern Alps, New Zealand. To examine this phenomenon, densities of tahr and chamois were measured at 53 sites within their sympatric range in the eastern Southern Alps during 1978–1979. In sites where only one species was present, tahr density was significantly higher than chamois density (P=0.032), probably reflecting species differences in sociality. Chamois density was higher in catchments without tahr than in those with tahr (P=0.012). Similarly, tahr density was significantly higher at sites without chamois than at those with chamois (P=0.033). Sites with both species present (termed sympatric) were significantly larger than those with only chamois or tahr (P<0.001). Following the prohibition of aerial hunting of tahr in 1983, 16 of the 17 sites where tahr and chamois were sympatric during 1978–1979 were recounted during 1991–1996. There was a 6-fold increase in the mean density of tahr between the two counts (P=0.001), whereas chamois density had declined significantly (P=0.006). Chamois persisted at only three sites, two of which had the highest chamois densities in 1978–1979. This is evidence that increasing densities of tahr exclude chamois from all but the `best' habitats. We conclude that intensive aerial hunting of tahr during 1967–1983 reduced tahr densities such that chamois could co-exist with tahr. Received: 20 March 1997 / Accepted: 8 September 1997  相似文献

For speciose, but poorly known groups, such as terrestrial arthropods, functional traits present a potential avenue to assist in predicting responses to environmental change. Species turnover is common along environmental gradients, but it is unclear how this is reflected in species traits. Community‐level change in arthropod traits, other than body size, has rarely been explored across spatial scales comparable to those examined here. We hypothesized that the composition and morphological traits of spider assemblages would differ across a gradient of climate and habitat structure. We examined foliage‐living spider assemblages associated with Themeda triandra grasslands along a 900 km climatic gradient in south‐eastern Australia. We used sweep‐netting to collect T. triandra‐associated spiders and counted juveniles and identified adults. We also measured morphological traits of adult spiders and noted their hunting mode. Associations with measures of habitat structure were less consistent than relationships with climate. Both juvenile and adult spiders were more abundant in warmer sites, although species richness was not affected by temperature. We found distinct turnover in species composition along the climatic gradient, with hunting spiders, particularly crab spiders (Thomisidae), making up a greater proportion of assemblages in warmer climates. A range of traits of spiders correlated with the climatic gradient. For example, larger spider species and species that were active hunters were more common in warmer climates. Changes in morphological traits across species, rather than within species drove the morphology‐climate relationship. Strong climate‐trait correlations suggest that it may be possible to predict changes in functional traits of assemblages in response to anthropogenic disturbances such as climate change.  相似文献

Nightjars and their allies represent the only major group of visually hunting aerial insectivores with a crepuscular and/or nocturnal lifestyle. Our purpose was to examine how both light regime and prey abundance in the tropics, where periods of twilight are extremely short, but nightjar diversity is high, affect activity across different temporal scales. We studied two nightjar species in West African bush savannah, standard‐winged nightjars Macrodipteryx longipennis Shaw and long‐tailed nightjars Caprimulgus climacurus Vieillot. We measured biomass of potential prey available using a vehicle mounted trap and found that it was highest at dusk and significantly lower at dawn and during the night. Based on direct observations, both nightjars exhibit the most intense foraging behaviour at dusk, less intense foraging at dawn and least at night, as predicted by both prey abundance and conditions for visual prey detection. Nocturnal foraging was positively correlated with lunar light levels and ceased below about 0.03 mW m?2. Over the course of a lunar cycle, nocturnal light availability varied markedly, while prey abundance remained constant at dusk and at night was slightly higher at full moon. Both species increased twilight foraging activity during new moon periods, compensating for the shorter nocturnal foraging window at that time. Seasonally, the pattern of nocturnal light availability was similar throughout the year, while prey availability peaked shortly after onset of the wet season and then slowly decreased over the following four months. The courtship and breeding phenology of both species was timed to coincide with the peak in aerial insect abundance, suggesting that prey availability rather than direct abiotic factors act as constraints, at least at the seasonal level. Our findings illustrate the peculiar constraints on visually orienting aerial nocturnal insectivores in general and tropical nightjars in particular and highlight the resulting nocturnal, lunar and seasonal allocation of activities.  相似文献

From 1999–2005, seventy-eight samples were collected from the small streams in the area of the Boubín Mountain including also the natural preserve “Boubínsky prales” (Boubín primeval forest) (Šumava Mts, Czech Republic). Nineteen species of thecamoebians were identified in the samples; the most abundant species were Centropyxis orbicularis, Pontigulasia compressa, Centropyxis aculeata, Difflugia oblonga and Centropyxis arcula. Species composition of assemblages as well as ecological affinities of the most common taxa are comparable with data from the previously analysed streams in the Šumava Mts. This correlation improves the quality of data for environmental preferences of thecamoebian assemblages contained in the streams and these can be used for interpretation of ancient environments. Though species composition of assemblages changes gradually, two end-member assemblages can be defined. For both assemblages, environmental conditions were defined: Lower-diversity assemblages dominated by centropyxids originated mainly from standing water with low content of organic debris. Relative abundances of C. orbicularis showed negative correlations with abundances of other Centropyxis spp. which may indicate different ecological affinities of this species. Centropyxis orbicularis may tolerate higher levels of fine organic debris in stream sediments. Assemblages with common to abundant occurrences of P. compressa and/or D. oblonga prefer running water. Difflugia oblonga dominated in samples with higher content of fine organic debris. Relation between test size of D. oblonga and flow rate was recorded: large D. oblonga prevailed in standing water while small specimens dominated in fast streams.  相似文献

The non-indigenous perennial grass, Arundo donax, is an aggressive invader of riparian areas throughout California and many sub-tropical regions of the world, and is hypothesized to provide poorer quality habitat for native wildlife in riparian systems. We sampled aerial and ground-dwelling insects and other terrestrial arthropods associated with Arundo, native willow vegetation (Salix spp.), and mixtures of the two vegetation types during two seasons to determine how Arundo influences invertebrate composition in a low gradient stream in central California. The total number of organisms, total biomass and taxonomic richness of aerial invertebrates associated with native vegetation was approximately twice that associated with Arundo vegetation, while mixed vegetation supported intermediate arthropod levels. Shannon-Weaver (Weiner) diversity associated with native vegetation stands was also higher than that of Arundo vegetation. Ground-dwelling assemblages did not show differences as great as aerial assemblages which are more critical to foraging avian species. These results indicate that vegetation type is a significant factor reducing the abundance and diversity of invertebrates in this, and presumably in many other riparian ecosystems where this invasive species has become a dominant component. Arundo invasion changes the vegetation structure of riparian zones and in turn, may increasingly jeopardize its habitat value for birds and other wildlife whose diets are largely composed of insects found in native riparian vegetation.  相似文献

With development of irrigation and oases, new habitats suitable for dragonflies appeared, and unique assemblages of dragonflies were formed in artificial reservoirs. In the oases zone of the Pamir-Alai Mts., species of the genus Ischnura predominate among Zygoptera. The co-occurrence of Ischnura fountainei, I, evansi, I. elegans, I. forcipata, and I. pumilio was investigated. Divergence of ecological niches of these species is due to their adaptation to different habitats. Co-dominating species demonstrate complementation, i.e., they use the same habitat in different time intervals. The hygrothermal preferences of species determine the differences in their daily rhythms and microspatial distribution of adults.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of the spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta was studied in the central and eastern part of the Etosha National Park, Namibia. Hyenas mainly hunted migratory ungulates such as springbok Antidorcas marsupialis, zebra Equus burchelli, and blue wildebeest Connochaetes taurinus, but also resident species such as the greater kudu Tragelaphus strepsiceros and gemsbok Oryx gazella. There were, however, major differences in the species most frequently killed by hyenas in central and eastern Etosha. The preferred prey species of spotted hyenas in central Etosha was springbok, whereas regarding the abundance of zebra and wildebeest, these two species were rather avoided. In contrast, the prey species preferred by hyenas in eastern Etosha was kudu. Zebra and gemsbok were taken in proportion to their abundance, whereas wildebeest and springbok seemed to be rather avoided. Differences in prey selection and preferences were also reflected in differences in hunting group sizes. In eastern Etosha, where spotted hyenas frequently hunted larger prey, hunting group sizes were significantly larger compared to those in the center of the park.  相似文献

Summary The distribution patterns of aerial seabirds are analysed from counts made in the Prydz Bay region, Antarctica, during the African legs of SIBEX I and II in late summer (end of February to April), and compared with those made farther west at the same time of year during FIBEX. Species composition and abundances were similar in all three surveys, with sooty shearwaters Puffinus griseus contributing approximately half of the total aerial bird energy demand. Differences between surveys are explained in terms of longitudinal or seasonal differences in sampling areas and periods. Correlations between bird distribution patterns and environmental parameters are used to infer the scale-dependent factors affecting bird dispersion at sea. Two macro-scale bird assemblages, identified by physical parameters, were separated along latitudinal gradients (temperature and salinity) associated with the Antarctic Divergence. These assemblages are consistent with the Intermediate and Southern High Latitude Groups identified during FIBEX. At smaller spatial scales, almost all species were correlated with the abundance of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba, both across the entire SIBEX I grid, and within the areas north and south of the Antarctic Divergence. Similarly, during SIBEX II, seabird densities were six times greater when krill was abundant than when krill was scarce. Sooty shearwaters, which appeared to be moving through the area, were the only abundant bird species not correlated with krill abundance. Possible reasons why previous studies have not detected correlations between seabird and krill abundances are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Additional new records and references from the literature are given for the Ring-nek-ked Parakeet, Psittacula krameri, in Egypt, Jordan, Israel and Syria. The species only succeeds in surviving in areas where there is little pressure from hunting, for example the city area of Cairo and several localities in Israel.  相似文献

Abstract

In Greece, as in many other Mediterranean countries, there is a lack of information enabling the use of aquatic macrophytes as biological indicators of the water trophic status. This research aimed to investigate the trophic preferences of the aquatic macrophyte assemblages encountered in selected standing water bodies of a lowland river basin of western Greece. It also aimed to assess the response of the macrophyte species that occur in the studied water bodies to different nutrient concentrations. A total of 56 macrophyte species were identified. TWINSPAN analysis distinguished four main vegetation groups potentially related to three trophic types. The Trophic Ranking Score developed in the UK was applied in order to investigate the trend in aquatic macrophytes in response to the different trophic conditions. The results indicated that TRSUK was not in accordance to the water trophic indices. After the addition of 14 new species and the re-scoring of the plants from the UK list, the re-calculation of TRS enabled a better classification of the trophic status convergent with the information from the water trophic indices. The current study constitutes a reference document providing basic information, and must be improved by updating the plant list with new data from other sites.  相似文献

Recently, several species of aerial‐hawking bats have been found to prey on migrating songbirds, but details on this behaviour and its relevance for bird migration are still unclear. We sequenced avian DNA in feather‐containing scats of the bird‐feeding bat Nyctalus lasiopterus from Spain collected during bird migration seasons. We found very high prey diversity, with 31 bird species from eight families of Passeriformes, almost all of which were nocturnally flying sub‐Saharan migrants. Moreover, species using tree hollows or nest boxes in the study area during migration periods were not present in the bats’ diet, indicating that birds are solely captured on the wing during night‐time passage. Additional to a generalist feeding strategy, we found that bats selected medium‐sized bird species, thereby assumingly optimizing their energetic cost‐benefit balance and injury risk. Surprisingly, bats preyed upon birds half their own body mass. This shows that the 5% prey to predator body mass ratio traditionally assumed for aerial hunting bats does not apply to this hunting strategy or even underestimates these animals’ behavioural and mechanical abilities. Considering the bats’ generalist feeding strategy and their large prey size range, we suggest that nocturnal bat predation may have influenced the evolution of bird migration strategies and behaviour.  相似文献

Epiphytic foraminifera from microhabitats of structurally different algae and seagrasses have been examined with respect to function, adaptive strategies and processes of diversification using morphotype and multivariate data analyses (Q- and R-mode). Faunal data, morphotype and cluster analyses indicate the existence of four fundamentally different phytal microhabitats that are dominated by species with distinct test morphologies (morphotypes). Structural features of plant substrates are shown to strongly influence the composition and diversity of epiphytic assemblages. Microhabitat and substrate preferences of sessile epiphytes are reflected in shell shape and attachment surfaces. Motile epiphytic morphotypes predominantly exhibit species specific plant microhabitat preferences. Species-specific microhabitat preferences have been elaborated upon using different methodologies, thereby excluding generalized assumptions made when working solely with morphotypes. Adaptive features preserved in the microtopography of attachment surfaces in permanently attached species record valuable information to indicate the presence of seagrasses through geologic time. The specific diversity of epiphytic assemblages is controlled by independent factors related to time (temporal availability of phytal substrates) and space (substrate geometry). Low diversities are observed on algae with short life-spans, while on longer lived algae and seagrasses higher diversities are measured. Highest diversities are recorded for sediment-accumulating plant microhabitats that offer niches for a mixture of epiphytic, epibenthic and infaunal species. As reflected by the distribution of foraminiferalK- and r-strategists, life-span of epiphytes and temporal availability of plant substrates are in accordance.  相似文献
