Interactions between algal epiphytes and their grazers can have a significant impact on the structure and function of eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) meadows. In Puget Sound, the herbivorous gastropod Lacuna variegata Carpenter and its congeners appear to remove large quantities of the epiphytic community from eelgrass blades. When snails at typical field densities were used in microcosms, Lacuna significantly reduced epiphytic biomass and areal productivity. Biomass-specific productivity of the epiphytic community showed an increasing trend with increasing snail density. Epiphytic productivity increased nonlinearly with increasing epiphytic biomass. The commonly used logistic population growth formula adequately described this relationship. Grazing rate also increased nonlinearly with increasing epiphytic biomass. The Hailing equation adequately described the relationship between grazing rate and epiphytic biomass. The proportion of the epiphytic biomass found on the oldest blade of an eelgrass shoot was related linearly to epiphytic biomass, suggesting that a constant fraction of the epiphytic community is lost regardless of epiphytic density. Lacuna clearly removed large quantities of epiphytic material from eelgrass blades, significantly altering community function. Modified Lotka-Volterra equations, incorporating the logistic growth form and Hailing grazing equation, should prove useful in modeling the epiphyte–grazer interaction.  相似文献

Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen in Jacqu.) J. V. Lamour. is a native source of kappa-carrageenan, a commercially important galactan, exploited for decades on the northeastern Brazilian coast. Further studies to obtain information about the effects of abiotic factors on the carrageenan yield and quality of specimens from the southeastern Brazilian coast (Rio de Janeiro State) are needed. In this study, the carrageenan yield and quality of H. musciformis was analyzed over a period of 1 year in populations from Rio de Janeiro state. One epiphytic population was collected at a site situated at the entrance of the Sepetiba Bay (Praia Vermelha), another in the middle of the bay (Praia Grande) and a third (Praia Rasa) in a place exposed to the open sea. An epilithic population was also collected at Praia Rasa. In the sampling period, different changes were observed in the carrageenan yield and quality (viscosity and sulphate content) of the H. musciformis (August 1994 to June 1995) at the different sites and habitats (epilithic and epiphytic). Kappa carrageenan was the only one of its type detected. Only one population showed a correlation between viscosity and degree of sulphate content. Our analyses suggest that abiotic factors, such as water movement, desiccation stress, low salinity and extreme temperatures, were the main abiotic factors that influenced the changes in carrageenan of the populations studied. Thus, for a rational use of natural beds of H. musciformis, it is desirable to estimate the changes in carrageenan and algal biomass in the place to be exploited.  相似文献

The Sphaerophorus globosus complex (Lecanorales, lichenized Ascomycota) shows a large morphological variation, and three relatively distinct morphotypes can be distinguished in parts of the distribution area. Here, we utilize a multigene‐based maximum‐parsimony approach (nITS+ LSU rDNA, mtSSU rDNA, β‐tubulin, and actin) to investigate whether these morphotypes constitute distinct species. The results show that there are at least two well‐supported monophyletic groups that we interpret as phylogenetic species within the S. globosus complex. These species do not completely correspond to the predefined morphotypes. One group, an apparently undescribed species, contains noncoralloid specimens from the North American Pacific Northwest. The other group, S. globosus, consists of two well‐supported monophyletic groups: one contains coralloid epiphytic specimens from the North American Pacific Northwest that are morphologically indistinguishable from epiphytic specimens from Europe and are presently interpreted as belonging to the same species and the other is morphologically variable and contains terrestrial specimens from Europe, North America, and southernmost South America and coralloid epiphytic and epilithic specimens from Europe. The results suggest that the population in southernmost South America originated by long‐distance dispersal from arctic populations in the Northern Hemisphere.  相似文献

A field manipulation experiment was conducted in a subtropical montane cloud forest in southwestern China to determine the possible responses of epiphytic bryophytes to increasing nitrogen (N) deposition from community to physiology level, and to find sensitive epiphytic bryophytes that may be used as indicators for assessing the degree of N pollution. N addition had significantly negative effects on species richness and cover of the epiphytic bryophyte community. Harmful effects of high N loads were recorded for chlorophyll, growth, and vitality of the species tested. The decline of some epiphytic bryophytes may result from detrimental effects on degradation to photosynthetic pigments. Bazzania himalayana (Mitt.) Schiffn., Bazzania ovistipula (Steph.) Mizut., and Homaliodendron flabellatum (Sm.) Fleisch. are candidates in atmospheric nitrogen monitoring. Epiphytic bryophytes in the montane cloud forest are very sensitive to increasing N deposition and often difficult to recover once they have been destroyed, providing early detection of enhanced N pollution for trees or even the whole forest ecosystem. The inference that increasing N pollution may lead to loss of biodiversity is a concern to the developing economy in western China, and should alert the government to the adverse impacts caused by increased industrial pollution during the process of China’s West Development.  相似文献

The foliose epiphytic lichen Lobaria pulmonaria has suffered a significant decline in European lowlands during the last decades and therefore is considered as endangered throughout Europe. An assessment of the genetic variability is necessary to formulate biologically sound conservation recommendations for this species. We investigated the genetic diversity of the fungal symbiont of L. pulmonaria using 143 specimens sampled from six populations (two small, one medium, three large) in the lowland, the Jura Mountains, the pre-Alps and the Alps of Switzerland. Among all nuclear and mitochondrial regions sequenced for this study, variability was found only in the internal transcribed spacer (ITS I), with three polymorphic sites, and in the nuclear ribosomal large subunit (nrLSU), with four polymorphic sites. The variable sites in the nrLSU are all located within a putative spliceosomal intron. We sequenced these two regions for 81 specimens and detected six genotypes. Two genotypes were common, two were found only in the more diverse populations and two were found only in one population each. There was no correlation between population size and genetic diversity. The highest genetic diversity was found in populations where the fungal symbiont is reproducing sexually. Populations with low genetic diversity included only the two same common genotypes. Our study provides evidence suggesting that L. pulmonaria is self-incompatible and heterothallic. Based on our results we give populations with sexually reproducing individuals a higher rank in terms of conservation priority than strictly asexual populations. The remaining lowland populations are so small, that one single catastrophic event such as a windthrow might destroy the entire population. Hence we suggest augmenting such populations in size and genetic diversity using small thallus fragments or vegetative diaspores collected in other populations. As we did not detect any locally adapted genotypes, these transplants can be taken from any other genetically diverse population in Switzerland.  相似文献

Density-dependent processes may have multiple effects on populations, which among other things include the regulation of population abundance and of the relative distribution of life-cycle stages within populations. The epiphytic habitat is often characterized as highly ephemeral and therefore epiphytic orchid populations may never achieve density-dependent regulation. In this study, we investigated the potential for density-dependent regulation in epiphytic and lithophytic orchids by examining the association between seedlings, juvenile and adult life-history stages in the Caribbean endemic orchid,Lepanthes rupestris in a cross-sectional study of 179 populations surveyed in the Luquillo National Forest along a riparian area where it is locally abundant. Under density-dependent regulation we expected a negative association between the ratio of seedling/adults and juveniles/adults and total population density. Population density was in the range of 140 individuals per m2, however patch sizes were small and mostly limited to less than 0.5 m2 with a maximum of 3 m2. We found no evidence of reduction of the ratio of seedlings or juveniles to adults as population size increased in either tree or boulder populations suggesting negative density dependence for population regulation inL. rupestris is either rare or occurs at even higher densities than those measured here. Moreover, we found positive (although weak) relationship between the ratio of seedlings and juveniles to adults and population size, suggesting that facilitation may be occurring.  相似文献

The spread of the epiphytic population of Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria and the disease it causes, bacterial leaf spot, were studied in field plots of pepper near Gainesville, Florida. In the summer of 1989, the epiphytic population of X. campestris pv. vesicatoria was dispersed to the west-northwest from point sources of diseased plants. Winds from the southeast during rainstorms were essential for the spread of bacteria in the field. In the autumn of 1989, a focus of bacterial leaf spot developed naturally near the centre of the experimental plot. The epiphytic population of X, campestris pv. vesicatoria increased sharply after a 2-day rain accompanied with strong wind. The wind was believed to be responsible for the transport of bacteria to distances 32 m from the focus. Initially in both seasons, the epiphytic populations occurred as distinct gradients from the focal sources of diseased plants. These gradients flattened over time and the disease incidence increased to near 100%, The increase in the epiphytic populations of the pathogen to > 3.0 log10 (cfu cm−2) on healthy plants away from the foci preceded disease appearance by several weeks. Applications of cupric hydroxide plus mancozeb significantly reduced the epiphytic population of X. campestris pv. vesicatoria on pepper leaves and slowed the spread of disease in the plots.  相似文献

Ting, Irwin P., and Walter E. Loomis. (Iowa State U., Ames.) Diffusion through stomates. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(9): 866–872. Illus. 1963.—It is shown that the rule that diffusion through isolated, small pores is proportional to the diameter rather than the area of the pores is valid for pores of diameters as small as 20 μ, and that the curve extends to the origin at zero diameters, indicating that the law is effective throughout the range of stomatal sizes. Suggestions that an elliptical pore will be relatively more effective in diffusion than a circular one and that diffusion is concentrated at the periphery of the pore are not supported by experimental evidence and are physically improbable. Brown and Escombe's conclusion that there is no interference in the diffusion through the individual pores of a multiperforate membrane if the pores are spaced 10 diameters apart is not valid for diffusion through the stomates of a leaf. With pores of 200 μ and less spaced 10 diameters apart, interference increases rapidly with a smaller size and larger number of pores. As a result, the diffusion through a membrane with pores 19 μ in diameter and 190 μ apart was the same as that through a membrane with pores 132 μ in diameter and 1.32 mm apart, although the calculated capacity of the first membrane was 7 times that of the second. The diffusion of water vapor through multiperforate membranes with pores spaced 10 diameters apart has an apparent maximum of 65–70% of the diffusion through an open tube. Calculations of the effect of partial closing of stomates, using Verduin's equation for interference between pores, indicate that the theoretical diffusion capacity of 10 μ stomates spaced at 10 diameters would be increased several times by closing to an average diameter of 5 μ. This increase illustrates the dominant effect of interference in diffusion through small, closely spaced pores. Calculated diffusion through these stomates would not be decreased until they were more than 95% closed. It is concluded that stomatal opening will have no important effect on diffusion from or into a leaf until the stomates are essentially closed.  相似文献

Irrigation and an in vitro agitation assay were used to determine the percentage of the epiphytic yeast community (Cryptococcus, Pseudozyma, Rhodotorula, and Sporobolomyces) adhering to the phylloplane of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris (Huds.) Pers.). Colony-forming units (cfu) of total epiphytic yeast populations (adherent and nonadherent cells) and of adherent populations (cells not removed by agitation) were determined by leaf washing and dilution plating. In an in vitro assay, 40.0% and 57.1% of the yeast adhered to the leaves, whereas, in initial field trials the percentage of adherent yeasts ranged from 40.0% to 71.9% of the total population. Adherent yeast cfu on leaves in the morning were significantly lower on bentgrass (8.0 x 103 to 3.1 x 104 cfu.cm(-2)) compared with total yeast cfu (1.4 x 104 to 4.7 x 104 cfu.cm(-2)) on the nonirrigated control. No differences in yeast populations were observed between irrigated and nonirrigated plots 2 h after the 0900 treatments. Yeast populations followed a diurnal pattern, with larger cfu recovered from bentgrass leaves in the morning and significantly lower populations recovered in the afternoon. At 1400 the adherent yeast were 83.1%-100% of the total yeast population recovered from the leaves. The relative adhesiveness of the epiphytic yeast community on bentgrass leaves is dynamic with nonadherent cells making up a larger percentage of the population in the mornings than the afternoons.  相似文献

An anatomical analysis of the chicken trigeminal ganglion was made using light microscopy on specimens prepared by usual chemical fixation or freeze-drying methods and by electron microscopy. Two types of neurons were consistently seen, dark and light cells. Dark cells contained a dense cytoplasm with Nissl substance distributed evenly throughout, whereas light cells had a less dense cytoplasm containing clumps of Nissl substance. The Nissl bodies in light cells contained only a few small cisternae of granular endoplasmic reticulum as compared with many stacked cisternae in Nissl bodies of dark cells. The ratio of dark to light cells was approximately 62:38 in all regions of the ganglion. Dark cells were consistently smaller than light cells. In the seven-day old chick, the mean diameters of the dark and light neurons were 21.4 μ and 29.5 μ respectively; in the adult the values were 29.9 μ and 39.7 μ respectively. It is concluded that the dark and light cells belong to two distinct neuronal cell populations.  相似文献

Usnea longissimawas sampled in SE Norway on six main branches of onePicea abies, comprising its full vertical canopy range. Nearly all specimens (n=781) were unattached and fragmented, in contrast with associated lichens. A combination of weak axes and lack of holdfasts resulted in a population of repeatedly displaced thalli, a similar situation as in ground-dwelling vagant lichens. Comparisons with a litterfall population indicated that thalli, regardless of size, had a similar probability to end as litter on the ground. Specimens were frequently sorediate, but only 12 small thalli with a basal holdfast had been directly recruited through soredial establishment. Its patchy distribution within apparently homogenous forest stands is probably a consequence of a rare successful long-range dispersal through soredia coupled with an abundant local dispersal of coarse thallus fragments. Old forests with ample, diffuse skylight at lower and humid canopy levels are probably essential to maintain a vagant epiphytic life form with a predominantly downward dispersal of thallus fragments.  相似文献

Extracellular adhesives from the diatoms Achnanthes longipes, Amphora coffeaeformis, Cymbella cistula, and Cymbella mexicana were characterized by monosaccharide and methylation analysis, lectin-fluorescein isothiocyanate localization, and cytochemical staining. Polysaccharide was the major component of adhesives formed during cell motility, synthesis of a basal pad, and/or production of a highly organized shaft. Hot water-insoluble/hot 0.5 M NaHCO3-soluble anionic polysaccharides from A. longipes and A. coffeaeformis adhesives were primarily composed of galactosyl (64-70%) and fucosyl (32-42%) residues. In A. longipes polymers, 2,3-, t-, 3-, and 4-linked/substituted galactosyl, t-, 3-, 4-, and 2-linked fucosyl, and t- and 2-linked glucuronic acid residues predominated. Adhesive polysaccharides from C. cistula were EDTA-soluble, sulfated, consisted of 83% galactosyl (4-, 4,6-, and 3,4-linked/substituted) and 13% xylosyl (t-, 4f/5p-, and 3p-linked/substituted) residues, and contained no uronosyl residues. Ulex europaeus agglutinin uniformly localized [alpha](1,2)-L-fucose units in C. cistula and Achnanthes adhesives formed during motility and in the pads of A. longipes. D-Galactose residues were localized throughout the shafts of C. cistula and capsules of A. coffeaeformis. D-Mannose and/or D-glucose, D-galactose, and [alpha](t)-L-fucose residues were uniformly localized in the outer layers of A. longipes shafts by Cancavalia ensiformis, Abrus precatorius, and Lotus tetragonolobus agglutinin, respectively. A model for diatom cell adhesive structure was developed from chemical characterization, localization, and microscopic observation of extracellular adhesive components formed during the diatom cell-attachment process.  相似文献

Diatoms have been long collected from the Southern Ocean but almost no data exist for epiphytic communities, despite their high ecological significance as an important food source in Antarctic coastal food chains. Here, we present a first growth form analysis of diatoms associated with rhodophyte hosts from Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, Antarctica. We performed this study to gather baseline information on the species composition of epiphytic diatom communities, determine the influence of some environmental variables on the diatom distribution patterns, and assess the caveats that must be taken into account in terms of sampling design. Macroalgal material was collected during the Italian Antarctic expeditions between 1990 and 2004. Epiphytic diatoms were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy. In terms of growth forms, there were no significant differences between the diatom communities on the different macroalgal host species. Motile (mainly small-celled Navicula perminuta and other Navicula spp.) and adnate (Cocconeis spp.) diatoms dominated the community throughout the study period. Many of the macroalgal blades examined were also covered by epiphytic animals (calcareous bryozoans, hydroids) over most of their surface, with a significant effect on the associated diatom community structure. Our findings suggest that the bio-physicochemical characteristics of each sampling site affected the epiphytic diatom communities more than the substrate type provided by the macroalgal host or the sampling depth.  相似文献

During 1982, structural and functional aspects of the epiphytic component in a tropical mixed seagrass meadow, have been investigated for each seagrass species separately. This meadow consisted of the seagrasses Thalassia hemprichii (Ehrenb.) Aschers., Cymodocea serrulata (R.Br.) Aschers. et Magnus, C. rotundata Ehrenb. et Hempr. ex Aschers., Halodule uninervis (Forssk.) Aschers. and Syringodium isoetifolium (Aschers.) Dandy.No significant differences were observed in floristic composition, number of algal species, abundance and diversity of the epiphytic component. On an area basis, annual mean above-ground biomass (seagrass leaves and epiphytes), amounted to 82 g ADW, of which 18% could be ascribed to the epiphytic component. The contribution of the epiphytic component to the annual mean above-ground production ranged from 16% on leaves of Thalassia hemprichii to 33% on leaves of Cymodocea serrulata. Total annual mean epiphyte production was 4.6 g ADW m−2 sediment surface day−1 (19%).When including the macroalgal component of this mixed seagrass meadow, total annual mean above-ground plant biomass amounted to 93 g ADW (212 g DW) on an area basis, of which the epiphytes contributed 15.5% (28.5% DW), the macroalgal component 12% (32.5% DW) and the seagrass leaves 72.5% (39.5% DW). Aspects of the epiphytic component (e.g., floristic composition, abundance, biomass and production) in monospecific and mixed seagrass communities are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract: Development and growth of the three threatened epiphytic lichen species Sticta fuliginosa (Hoffm.) Ach., Leptogium saturninum (Dicks.) Nyl. and Menegazzia terebrata (Hoffm.) Massal. was investigated by low temperature scanning electron microscopy and macro‐photography. Small cotton gauze discs acting as artificial substrata were fixed with aluminium staples on the bark of selected trees and vegetative diaspores (isidia or soredia) were transferred onto these discs. The subsequent development into small thalli of up to 3 mm length was observed within the 32‐month study period. All three species produced anchoring hyphae within the first month after transplantation. Two months later 52 % of the S. fuliginosa diaspores were still on the gauze discs and after 16 months 29 % remained attached. For L. saturninum, the corresponding percentages were 46 % and 19 %, respectively. First lobes resembling adult thalli were observed after 8 to 12 months in S. fuliginosa and L. saturninum but only after 16 months in M. terebrata. All three species developed usually more than one thallus primordium (pseudomeristematic growth zone) per isidium or soredial cluster. Transplanted thallus fragments were able to fix themselves on the new substratum but in all three species large parts degenerated and fell off during the first year, particularly in S. fuliginosa. The results show that the juvenile development of the investigated species is not restricted by microclimatic factors at the study site. We therefore conclude that the juvenile development is not the restricting factor in regard to growth and population survival. Other factors, such as the competition with bryophytes, insufficient diaspore dispersal or forest management practice must account for the small population sizes. The described transplantation technique of vegetative diaspores has proved to be very useful for the augmentation of small populations without damaging the existing thalli and we suggest use of this method for in situ conservation of endangered lichen species.  相似文献

Total populations of epiphytic bacteria and selected components thereof were determined on sets of 24 to 36 individual leaves (corn, rye) or leaflets (snap bean, soybean, tomato) of field-grown plants by washing and dilution plating. In general, levels of component populations (e.g., bacteria that are ice nucleation active) were quantitatively more variable from leaf to leaf within a set than were total epiphytic bacterial populations. Populations of a given component frequently varied by a factor of 100 to 1,000 within a set of leaves. Total bacterial populations usually varied by a factor of about 10. For each set of leaves, total and component epiphytic bacterial populations were found to approximate a lognormal distribution by the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality. Due to the lognormal distribution of epiphytic bacterial populations, estimates of population size based on the common practice of using bulked samples (wherein several leaves are washed together) will overestimate the population median by a factor of approximately 1.15σ2. From the known probability distribution of bacterial populations, the frequency with which a given bacterial population size is met or exceeded on individual leaves can be estimated. If the bacterial component is phytopathogenic, the frequency estimates could be used to relate quantitatively pathogen populations and disease incidence.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal genetic structures were examined across sites on islands and mainland (continuous forest) populations of an epiphytic orchid, Catasetum viridiflavum, using 17 polymorphic allozyme loci. I tested whether patches on islands or at mainland sites comprised small local populations or a large population. Low among population differentiation was observed across the landscape suggesting that the species-specific pollinator and tiny wind-dispersed seeds maintain interconnections among distant patches. Temporal genetic structure among stage classes, and among breeding individuals are important components of the maintenance of genetic variation in this orchid. The natural history of this species including small breeding populations, probable high frequency of mating among relatives, and the high rates of seed movement among sites contribute to the high FIS. These data show that physically isolated patches in this epiphytic orchid comprise a single larger genetic population, which is independent of the physical distances among sites. Although quite different in ecological and life history characteristics, the genetic structure of this orchid demonstrates a pattern similar to temperate and tropical trees in fragmented landscapes.  相似文献

The biosynthesis of IgM μ polypeptides was studied in isolated populations of normal B lymphocytes and in various IgM-producing cell lines. Membrane and secretory μ were found to be distinct polypeptide species, with separate biosynthetic intermediates from the translation stage onwards. Various B cell populations express different portions of the two biosynthetic μ pathways. Normal, resting small B lymphocytes do not secrete detectable μ and lack the later intermediate forms of secretory μ. However, they apparently possess, and translate, secretory μ mRNA, and show earlier secretory μ intermediate protein forms. Resting B cells thus exert posttranslational control over secretory μ expression. Since the later intermediate forms of secretory μ, which are lacking in small B cells, are due to carbohydrate modifications of the μ chain, it is suggested that the carbohydrate portion may be involved in regulating the expression of the secretory μ glycoprotein. In contrast to small B cells, highly differentiated IgM-secreting cells control the expression of membrane μ by a pretranslational mechanism.  相似文献

A variety of macroalgae (Ceramium rubrum, Corallina officinalis, Palmaria palmata, Mastocarpus stellatus, Fucus vesiculosus, Cladophora rupestris, Ulva sp.) were investigated by scanning electron microscopy to visualize epiphytic colonizers. The macroalgae differed in terms of their epiphytic coverage of bacteria, fungi and diatoms. Macroalgae, largely devoid of epiphytic diatoms, were hypothesized to employ effective antifouling means to reduce epiphytic coverage, whilst heavily fouled macroalgae were proposed to lack antifouling strategies. To test these hypotheses from an allelochemical perspective with regard to fouling diatoms, dichloromethane-methanol (1:1) crude extracts of macroalgae were concentrated in dimethylsulfoxide and investigated in diatom attachment and proliferation assays using four benthic diatoms (Nitzschia sp., Navicula phyllepta, Navicula arenaria and Amphora sp.). Algal extracts exhibited a distinct pattern of activity against the test diatoms, suggesting a targeted and selective effect of macroalgal metabolites on individual fouling diatoms. The main outcome of this study was that visual inspection and quantitative categorization of epiphytic colonizers on macroalgal thalli could not be used to predict reliably whether macroalgae employed a chemical defense mechanism.  相似文献
