Two metrically defined subspecies have traditionally been recognised within the Palaearctic distribution range of the Egyptian fruit bat Rousettus aegyptiacus; the larger R. a. aegyptiacus in Egypt and the northern part of the Middle East and the smaller R. a. arabicus in the southern Middle East. An extensive material of R. aegyptiacus from all parts of this area, i.e. the Levant (incl. Turkey and Cyprus), Egypt (incl. Sinai), northern Sudan, Yemen, Oman, Iran, and Pakistan, as well as comparative samples from its sub-Saharan range, were tested using both morphological and genetic approaches in order to revise the species’ taxonomic status. The results indicated two possible processes, depending on the method used. Genetic analysis of the mitochondrial genome (nd1 and cytb) indicated low variation (< 2.0% of genetic distance) and lack of geographical structure while morphometric analysis indicated significant metric differences. Two basic size morphotypes were found within the Palaearctic range, with a rather mosaic-like geographical distribution and a lack of clear size distinction between the two categories, though intermediate types were detected. Thus, we suggest that all Palaearctic populations of R. aegyptiacus represent one form, the nominotypical subspecies, which is uniform in genetic traits but plastic in metric traits.  相似文献

The Palaearctic flea fauna includes 921 species and 479 subspecies from 96 genera of 10 families. Of them, 858 species (94%) from 43 genera are endemic to the Palaearctic; they comprise 40% of the Palaearctic Hystrichopsyllidae, 24% of Ceratophyllidae, and 20% of Leptopsyllidae. Ranges of 581 species (63% of the Palaearctic fauna) are situated within one province or subregion of the Palaearctic. Species with ranges including a part of Asia (592) comprise 87% of the total fauna; 72% of the species (517) are endemic to the Palaearctic. The largest centers of taxonomic diversity of Palaearctic fleas are situated in the East Asian, Central Asian, and Turano-Iranian Subregions: 320 species of fleas (214 of them endemic) from 59 genera (8 endemic) are known from the East Asian Subregion; 270 species (over 120 endemic) from 54 genera (5 endemic) are distributed in the Central Asian Subregion. The Turano-Iranian fauna comprises 213 species (103 endemic) from 47 genera (3 endemic); about 160 species occur in the Turanian Subprovince closest to the Russian borders, one-third of them (52 species, or 33%) are endemic; 69 species more are endemic to the entire Asian part of the Palaearctic. Extra-Asian and extra-Siberian ranges are known in 190 flea species. In the western Palaearctic, 76 species are endemic to the European Province, and 57 species, to the Mediterranean Province; 36 species have Euro-Mediterranean distribution. The fauna of the Saharo-Arabian Subregion comprises 30 species (12 endemic), 6 species have ranges of the Mediterranean-Saharo-Arabian type. Scenarios of the origin of the Siphonaptera at the Triassic-Jurassic boundary are hypothesized. Formation of the Palaearctic flea fauna was mostly supported by the Asian-Indo-Malayan and East Asian-Western American palaeofaunal centers of taxonomic diversity. The long history of faunal exchange between the east Palaearctic and the west Nearctic is manifested by the distribution of the parasites of rodents and insectivores, fleas of the genera Stenoponia, Rhadinopsylla, Nearctopsylla, and Catallagia, belonging to several subfamilies of the Hystrichopsyllidae, as well as members of a number of other flea families. A great number of endemic species in the genera Palaeopsylla and Ctenophthalmus (Hystrichopsyllidae), both in the European and Asian parts of the Palaearctic, can be explained by the junction of the European and Asian continental platforms in the late Cretaceous and their subsequent isolation during the Paleocene. A considerable contribution to the flea fauna in the Russian territory was made by the East Asian-Nearctic center of taxonomic diversity, with a smaller role of the European palaeofauna. Immigration of species of the family Pulicidae from the Afrotropical Region is restricted to the southern territories of Russia.  相似文献

The nonmarine mammal fauna of the Maghreb region of north‐west Africa is related to that from three potential source areas: the northern Palaearctic (Europe and south‐west Asia; here referred to as the European fauna), subsaharan Africa (the African fauna) and the arid Palaearctic (Sahara Desert: the desert fauna). On the basis of geographical distribution patterns, this fauna divisible into two groups: the bats, whose affinities are most closely related to southern Europe and south‐west Asia, and nonflying species, most closely related to subsaharan Africa but with an appreciable northern Palaearctic element. These affinities are even more pronounced if desert fauna are removed from the analysis. The nonflying European fauna probably colonized via south‐west Asia and north Africa, rather than direct from western Europe. The results demonstrate that terrestrial habitat barriers are less of an impediment to dispersal, for all mammals except bats, than even narrow stretches of water. The fauna of the Maghreb may be undergoing faunal relaxation, following immigration from tropical Africa and south‐west Asia during mesic phases in the Late Pleistocene and early Holocene.  相似文献

The first species of the cythereine genus Callostoma from outside the Palaearctic Region is described from the Ogaden region of Ethiopia. The relationships of Oniromyia Bezzi are examined, and a new subfamily is proposed to contain it as its affinities lie closer to the Cylleniinae than to the Cythereinae sensu stricto.  相似文献

In this study, multivariate spatial clustering on monthly normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) maps is used to classify ecological regions over the western Palaearctic. This classification is then used to delineate the distribution and climate preferences of populations (clades) of the tick Ixodes ricinus L. (Acari: Ixodidae) from a geographically extensive dataset of tick records and a gridded 2.5-km resolution climate dataset. Using monthly layers of the NDVI, regions of similar ecological attributes were defined and nine populations with significant differences in critical climate parameters (P< 0.005) were detected. Grouping of tick records according to other categories, such as political divisions, a 4 degrees x 4 degrees grid overlying the study area, or the CORINE) and USGS) vegetation classification schemes did not provided significantly separated populations (P = 0.094-0.304). Factor analysis and hierarchical tree clustering provided an ecological overview of these tick clades: two Mediterranean and one Scandinavian (western) clades are clearly separated from a node that includes clades of different parts of central Europe and the British Isles, with contrasting affinities between the different clades. The capture records of these ecologically separated clades produce a clear bias when bioclimate envelope modelling is applied to the mapping of habitat suitability for the tick in the western Palaearctic. The best-performing methods (Cohen's kappa = 0.834-0.912) use partial models developed with data from each ecoregion, which are then overlapped over the region of study. It is concluded that the use of ecologically derived ecoregions is an objective step in assessing the presence of ecologically different clades, and provides a guide in the development of data partitioning for habitat suitability modelling.  相似文献

Historical sources and archaeological data predict significant population variability in mid-Holocene northern Africa. Multivariate analyses of crania demonstrate wide variation but also suggest an indigenous craniometric pattern common to both late dynastic northern Egypt and the coastal Maghreb region. Both tropical African and European metric phenotypes, as well intermediate patterns, are found in mid-Holocene Maghreb sites. Early southern predynastic Egyptian crania show tropical African affinities, displaying craniometric trends that differ notably from the coastal northern African pattern. The various craniofacial patterns discernible in northern Africa are attributable to the agents of microevolution and migration.  相似文献

The karyotypes of the lesser Egyptian jerboa Jaculus jaculus and the greater Egyptian jerboa Jaculus orientalis from Tunisia are described and compared with available data particularly from Egypt. The species examined have a similar karyotype consisting of 2n = 48 chromosomes and a fundamental number of autosomes (NFa) varying from 88 to 90 in J. jaculus and from 84 to 88 in J. orientalis. The X chromosome is submetacentric in both species, while the Y is submetacentric in J. orientalis and acrocentric in J. jaculus. Most of the autosomes are meta/submetacentric but the small pairs 22 - 23 in J. jaculus and 20-23 in J. orientalis are frequently acrocentric, yielding considerable differences in the NFa within and among species. Morphological variation in these small pairs of autosomes and/or in the Y chromosome in J. orientalis may distinguish populations of the two species from Egypt and Tunisia. The differences observed either between Egypt and Tunisia or between the Tunisian Jaculus species are probably associated with chromosomal rearrangements such as pericentric inversions or heterochromatin variation. They appear of lesser magnitude than other changes (especially molecular) that have occurred during the evolution of this genus.  相似文献

The genetic diversity of 14 bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties originating from Mediterranean region (Egypt and Greece) was assessed by means of Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Seventeen RAPD markers were used to analyze and compare genetic diversity among the selected wheat varieties. Average of similarity coefficients based on RAPD markers for all of the studied varieties was 0.718. Average and range of genetic similarity coefficients among varieties obtained from both Egypt and Greece independently were 0.765 (from 0.66 to 0.886) and 0.723 (from 0.604 to 0.896), respectively. The cophenetic correlation coefficients of the three RAPD dendrograms (generated for all of the 14 varieties, the seven Egyptian varieties separately and the seven Greek varieties separately) were r = 0.774, 0.80, and 0.74, respectively. Both cluster analysis and Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCOORDA) were able to differentiate between Egyptian and Greek wheat varieties, but PCOORDA was more efficient in its separation. The percentage of variance accounted for the first two principal coordinates was 49.45% of total genetic variance for RAPD. Notable geographical divergence was found between Egyptian and Greek wheat varieties.  相似文献

Egyptian flower mantis Blepharopsis mendica (Order: Mantodea) is a widespread mantis species throughout the southwest Palearctic region. The ecological and geographical distribution of such interesting species is rarely known. So, through this work, habitat suitability models for its distribution through Egyptian territory were created using MaxEnt software from 90 occurrence records. One topographic (altitude) and eleven bioclimatic variables influencing the species distribution were selected to generate the models. The predicted distribution in Egypt was focused on the Delta, South Sinai, the north-eastern part of the country, and some areas in the west including Siwa Oasis. Temporal analysis between the two periods (1900–1961) and (1961–2017) show current reduction of this species distribution through Delta and its surrounding areas, may be due to urbanization. On the other hand, it increases in newly protected areas of South Sinai. Under the future climate change scenario, the MaxEnt model predicted the habitat gains for B. mendica in RCP 2.6 for 2070 and loss of habitat in RCP 8.5 for the same year. Our results can be used as a basis for conserving this species not only in Egypt, but also throughout the whole of its range, also, it show how the using of geo-information could help in studying animal ecology.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: PubMed is a free web literature search service that contains almost 21 millions of abstracts and publications with almost 5 million user queries daily. The purposes of the study were to compare trends in PubMed-indexed cancer and biomedical publications from Egypt to that of the world and to predict future publication volumes. METHODS: The PubMed was searched for the biomedical publications between 1991 and 2010 (publications dates). Affiliation was then limited to Egypt. Further limitation was applied to cancer, human and animal publications. Poisson regression model was used for prediction of future number of publications between 2011 and 2020. RESULTS: Cancer publications contributed 23% to biomedical publications both for Egypt and the world. Egyptian biomedical and cancer publications contributed about 0.13% to their world counterparts. This contribution was more than doubled over the study period. Egyptian and world's publications increased from year to year with rapid rise starting the year 2003. Egyptian as well as world's human cancer publications showed the highest increases. Egyptian publications had some peculiarities; they showed some drop at the years 1994 and 2002 and apart from the decline in the animal: human ratio with time, all Egyptian publications in the period 1991-2000 were significantly more than those in 2001-2010 (P<0.05 for all). By 2020, Egyptian biomedical and cancer publications will increase by 158.7% and 280% relative to 2010 to constitute 0.34% and 0.17% of total PubMed publications, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The Egyptian contribution to world's biomedical and cancer publications needs significant improvements through research strategic planning, setting national research priorities, adequate funding and researchers' training.  相似文献

Specific features of the carpenter-moths (Cossidae) distribution in the Palaearctic deserts are considered. The Palaearctic frontier was delimited to the Arabian Peninsula (the eastern and northern parts of Arabia are attributed to the Palaearctic Region; Yemen, southwestern Saudi Arabia, and southernmost Iran belong to the Afrotropical Region). Cossidae are highly endemic to arid areas. Some Palaearctic carpenter-moth genera penetrate to Africa southward of the Sahara Desert (an important characteristic distinguishing them from most of the other Lepidoptera). The local faunas of the Palaearctic deserts are united into 4 groups: the Sahara-Arabian-Southern-Iranian, Central-Asian-Kazakhstanian, Western-Gobian, and Eastern-Gobian. In the Eastern Gobi Desert, the fauna is the most specific; it should be considered as a separate zoogeographical subregion.  相似文献

A brief account is given of the topography and climate of the Sudan and a more detailed survey is made of the vegetation and habitats afforded to wintering Palaearctic migrants in the Sahel and Soudan savannah zones in the central Sudan. Climatic conditions during the migration seasons are mentioned and the utilization of habitats by wintering migrants is broadly surveyed.
The status of 196 Palaearctic migrant species is treated briefly. The basic observational data are tabulated to summarize observed patterns of migration in terms of date, relative abundance and region (for which purpose the central Sudan is divided into four from west to east). Hitherto unpublished field notes of the authors and their collaborators are used, together with dated observations (including specimens collected) of earlier authors, to provide the fullest data on each species.
Moreau's (1967) paradox is discussed as it relates to the Sahel and Soudan savannah zones in the central Sudan, together with the degree of competition with resident African species in those zones. Some disparities between the spring and autumn abundance and d. istribution of Palaearctic migrants are discussed in relation to 40 species ana some tentative views are advanced on the possible reasons for such disparities. Evidence is adduced which points to Lanius minor and Coraczus garrulus (and possibly Circus pygargus , partially at least) having loop migrations, south through the Sudan and north through Arabia, and Falco wespertinus south through the Sudan and north through West Africa. An explanation is offered for the greater volume of water birds observed migrating down-Nile in spring compared with their volume up-Nile in autumn, and for the reversed situation observed in the region west of the Nile for these same species.
Shelduck Tadorna tadorna is included in the Sudan list for the first time.  相似文献

Spontaneous clearance of hepatitis C virus (HCV) occurs in ~30% of acute infections. Host genetics play a major role in HCV clearance, with a strong effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the IL28B gene already found in different populations, mostly infected with viral genotypes 1 and 3. Egypt has the highest prevalence of HCV infection in the world, which is mostly due to viral genotype 4. We investigated the role of several IL28B SNPs in HCV spontaneous clearance in an Egyptian population. We selected nine SNPs within the IL28B genomic region covering the linkage disequilibrium (LD) block known to be associated with HCV clearance in European populations. These SNPs were genotyped in 261 HCV-infected Egyptian subjects (130 with spontaneous clearance and 131 with chronic infection). The most associated SNPs were rs12979860 (P = 1.6 × 10(-7)) and the non-synonymous IL28B SNP, rs8103142 (P = 1.6 × 10(-7)). Interestingly, three SNPs at the two bounds of the region were monomorphic, reducing the size of the LD block in which the causal variants are potentially located to ~20 kilobases. HCV clearance in Egypt was associated with a region of IL28B smaller than that identified in European populations, and involved the non-synonymous IL28B SNP, rs8103142.  相似文献

Purpose

Life cycle inventory (LCI) data are region-specific because energy fuel mixtures and methods of production often differ from region to region. LCI database examples include US LCI, Ecoinvent v.2, and NIST, each of which is country-specific. Thus, the main aim of this study is to show that Egypt is in need of an Egyptian National LCI (ENLCI) database and to focus on the means of developing a database specific to Egypt.

Methods

Arab countries have thus far engaged in virtually no life cycle assessment (LCA) studies, and a significant neglect of this matter is in evidence for the continent of Africa and, in particular, Egypt. Thus, this study suggests an organizational and managerial framework for the development of a national LCI database and sheds light on the required LCI database categories and data quality for practical solutions reflecting who is equipped to do what in order to keep pace with the world.

Results

The results from this review are useful to standardize the study of the life cycle assessment concept in Egypt; to form a foundation for development of an Egyptian database for facilitating a cleaner environment; to encourage stakeholders, such as the environmental agencies, Egyptian Housing and Building Research Center, and the Ministry of Industry; to propose an organizational framework in which they play a central role; and to provide investment to initiate development.

Conclusions

The analysis indicates that the development of a LCI database specific to Egypt is difficult because Egypt has various technical and organizational challenges, but a roadmap of actions to be taken to move ahead is provided. The success of this roadmap depends on the capacity for developing the necessary technical and financial support and on strong partnerships with industry, government, LCA professionals, and academia.  相似文献

A brief general characteristic and review of distribution of the subfamily Ceutorhynchinae over zoogeographical realms are given, with an emphasis on the distribution within the Holarctic and Palaearctic. The potential of exploiting landscapes of all natural zones of the Holarctic by a low-rank taxon is exemplified by the Holarctic Ceutorhynchus cochleariae (Gyll.) species-group comprising ca. 20 species evenly distributed between the Palaearctic and Nearctic. Although neighboring with the powerful centers of tropical biota, the Holarctic fauna of the subfamily Ceutorhynchinae is formed mostly of endemic and subendemic genera which are especially abundant in the Palaearctic. This region possesses the most diversified generic and species composition of the fauna consisting of predominantly endemic and subendemic genera (in the Mediterranean and Saharo-Gobian regions, also of the highly diversified tribe Oxyonychini) up to its southern border. The existence of characteristic transitional faunas in the zones of contact of the Holarctic fauna with the faunas of the tropical regions in East Asia and Mexico is shown. These transitional faunas include a considerable number of endemic taxa of the genus and species groups. A conspicuous feature of the Palaearctic ceutorhynchine fauna is the rather numerous complex of the upland and high-latitude species.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences of the COI gene and the control region were used to examine the genetic population structure of Aglais urticae L. (Lepidoptera) over its entire geographic range, i.e., the Palaearctic. The phylogenetic relationships within and between A. urticae subspecies were determined and patterns of mtDNA divergence and ecological differentiation were compared. High gene flow together with a recent and sudden population expansion characterise the genetic population structure of this species. No geographically induced differentiation was observed, nor were subspecies identified as separate evolutionary units. The discrepancy between the genetic and ecological variation is most likely due to the slower rate of mtDNA evolution compared to ecological differentiation. The control region proved to be a less useful molecular marker for the population genetics and the phylogenetic reconstruction of closely related taxa in A. urticae than it has for other species. The extreme bias in adenine and thymine content (A+T=90.91%) probably renders this region highly susceptible to homoplasy, resulting in a less informative molecular marker.  相似文献

Bimiracidial infections of Lymnaea truncatula with three isolates of Fasciola gigantica, originating from China, Egypt and Madagascar, were carried out to determine the effect of geographic origin of the parasite on the larval productivity of redial generations. The prevalences of experimental infections in snails exposed to strains from Madagascar, China and Egypt were 20.8%, 60.0% and 80.0%, respectively. At day 49 post-exposure (p.e.), the total number of free rediae in snails infected with the Egyptian isolate was significantly higher than that recorded in the Madagascan group. On the other hand, at day 49 p.e., the majority of cercariae in the Chinese and Egyptian groups were produced by R2a rediae (70.6% and 66.6% of cercariae produced by all live rediae), while, in the Madagascan group, the cercariae were produced mainly by the first redial generation. Snails infected with the Egyptian isolate of miracidia developed more live rediae and, consequently, could produce a higher number of cercariae. As a result, L. truncatula snails were highly adapted to infections with the Egyptian and Chinese isolates of F. gigantica.  相似文献

The Hydrachnidia (water mites) represent the most important group of the Arachnida in fresh water. Over 6,000 species have been described worldwide, representing 57 families, 81 subfamilies and more than 400 genera. The article analyzes extant water mite diversity and biogeography. Data on distribution and species richness of water mites are substantial but still far from complete. Many parts of the world are poorly investigated, Oriental and Afrotropical regions in particular. Moreover, information among different freshwater habitats is unbalanced with springs and interstitial waters disproportionately unrepresented. Therefore, more than 10,000 species could be reasonably expected to occur in inland waters worldwide. Based on available information, the Palaearctic region represents one of the better investigated areas with the highest number of species recorded (1,642 species). More than 1,000 species have been recorded in each of the Neotropical (1,305 species) and Nearctic regions (1,025 species). Known species richness is lower in Afrotropical (787 species) and Australasian (694 species) regions, and lowest in the Oriental region (554 species). The total number of genera is not correlated with species richness and is distinctly higher in the Neotropical (164 genera); genus richness is similar in the Palaearctic, Nearctic and Australasian regions (128–131 genera) and is lower in the Afrotropical and Oriental regions with 110 and 94 genera, respectively. A mean number of about three genera per family occur in the Palaeartic, Nearctic and Oriental while an average of more than four genera characterizes the families of Australasian and Afrotropical regions and more than five genera those of the Neotropical. Australasian fauna is also characterized by the highest percentage of endemic genera (62%), followed by Neotropical (50.6%) and Afrotropical (47.2%) regions. Lower values are recorded for the Palaearctic (26.9%), Oriental (24.4%) and Nearctic (21.4%). The Palaearctic and Nearctic have the highest faunistic similarity, some minor affinities are also evident for the generic diversification of Holarctic and Oriental families. The faunas of Southern Hemisphere bioregions are more distinct and characterized by the presence of ancient Gondwanan clades with a regional diversification particularly evident in the Neotropics and Australasia. This scenario of water mite diversity and distribution reflect the basic vicariance pattern, isolation, phylogenetic diversification, recent climatic vicissitudes and episodes of dispersal between adjacent land masses together with extant ecological factors can be evoked to explain distribution patterns at a global scale. The Gebel Qreiya and nearby Wadi Hamama sections of the central Eastern Desert are among the most complete K/T boundary sequences known from Egypt. The two sections were analyzed spanning an interval from l.83 Myr below to about 3 Myr above the K/T boundary. A 1-cm-thick red clay layer at the K/T boundary at Gebel Qreiya contains an Ir anomaly of 5.4 ppb. The high-resolution study and well-preserved nannoflora provide good age control and the first quantitative records of calcareous nannofossil assemblages for paleoecological interpretations across the K/T transition in Egypt. Four zones (Micula murus, Micula prinsii, NP1, and NP2) were distinguished and correlated with other nannofossil and planktonic foraminiferal zonations that are broadly applicable for the eastern Tethys region. Latest Maastrichtian assemblages are abundant and diverse, though Cretaceous species richness progressively decreased across the K/T boundary. Dominant species include Arkhangelskiella cymbiformis, Micula decussata and Watznaueria barnesae, with high abundance of dissolution-resistant M. decussata reflecting periods of high environmental stress. Thoracosphaera blooms mark the K/T boundary and are followed by an acme of the opportunistic survivor Braarudosphaera bigelowii, the first appearance of the new Tertiary species Cruciplacolithus primus, and an acme of Coccolithus cavus/pelagicus. These successive abundance peaks provide the basis for subdivision of the Early Danian Zones NP1 and NP2 into five subzones. Correlation of selected nannofossil taxa from the Egyptian sections with those from various onshore marine and deep-sea sections provides insights into their paleoenvironmental and paleoecological affinities.  相似文献
