Despite many reports of long-lasting elevation of metabolism after exercise, little is known regarding the effects of exercise intensity and duration on this phenomenon. This study examined the effect of a constant duration (30 min) of cycle ergometer exercise at varied intensity levels [50 and 70% of maximal O2 consumption (VO2max)] on 3-h recovery of oxygen uptake (VO2). VO2 and respiratory exchange ratios were measured by open-circuit spirometry in five trained female cyclists (age 25 +/- 1.7 yr) and five untrained females (age 27 +/- 0.8 yr). Postexercise VO2 measured at intervals for 3 h after exercise was greater (P less than 0.01) after exercise at 50% VO2max in trained (0.40 +/- 0.01 l/min) and untrained subjects (0.39 +/- 0.01 l/min) than after 70% VO2max in (0.31 +/- 0.02 l/min) and untrained subjects (0.29 +/- 0.02 l/min). The lower respiratory exchange ratio values (P less than 0.01) after 50% VO2max in trained (0.78 +/- 0.01) and untrained subjects (0.80 +/- 0.01) compared with 70% VO2max in trained (0.81 +/- 0.01) and untrained subjects (0.83 +/- 0.01) suggest that an increase in fat metabolism may be implicated in the long-term elevation of metabolism after exercise. This was supported by the greater estimated fatty acid oxidation (P less than 0.05) after 50% VO2max in trained (147 +/- 4 mg/min) and untrained subjects (133 +/- 9 mg/min) compared with 70% VO2max in trained (101 +/- 6 mg/min) and untrained subjects (85 +/- 7 mg/min).  相似文献

To determine how long a meal will affect the metabolic response to exercise, nine endurance-trained and nine untrained subjects cycled for 30 min at 70% of peak O2 consumption (VO2 peak) 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 h after eating 2 g carbohydrate/kg body wt. In addition, each subject completed 30 min of cycling 4 h after the meal at an intensity that elicited a respiratory exchange ratio (RER) of 0.94-0.95. During exercise after 2 and 4 h of fasting, carbohydrate oxidation was elevated 13-15% compared with the response to exercise after an 8- and 12-h fast (P less than 0.01). The increase in blood glycerol concentration during exercise (30 to 0 min) was linearly related to the length of fasting (r = 0.99; P less than 0.01). In all subjects, plasma glucose concentration declined 17-21% during exercise after 2 h of fasting (P less than 0.01). Plasma glucose concentration also declined (15-25%) during exercise in the trained subjects after 4 and 6 h of fasting (P less than 0.05) but did not change in the untrained subjects. However, the decline in plasma glucose concentration was similar (14%) in the two groups when the exercise intensity was increased in the trained subjects (i.e., 78 +/- 1% VO2 peak) and decreased in the untrained subjects (i.e., 65 +/- 3% VO2 peak) to elicit a similar RER.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

We studied whether the previously reported intensified beta-endorphin response to exercise after training might result from a training-induced general increase in anterior pituitary secretory capacity. Identical hypoglycemia was induced by insulin infusion in 7 untrained (VO2max 49 +/- 4 ml X (kg X min)-1, mean and SE) and 8 physically trained (VO2max 65 +/- 4 ml X (kg X min)-1) subjects. In response to hypoglycemia, levels of beta-endorphin and prolactin immunoreactivity in serum increased similarly in trained (from 41 +/- 2 pg X ml-1 and 6 +/- 1 pg X ml-1 before hypoglycemia to 103 +/- 11 pg X ml-1 and 43 +/- 9 pg X ml-1 during recovery, P less than 0.05) and untrained (from 35 +/- 7 pg X ml-1 and 7 +/- 2 pg X ml-1 to 113 +/- 18 pg X ml-1 and 31 +/- 8 pg X ml-1, P less than 0.05) subjects. Growth hormone (GH) was higher 90 min after glucose nadir in trained (61 +/- 13 mU X l-1) than in untrained (25 +/- 6 mU X l-1) subjects (P less than 0.05). Levels of thyrotropin (TSH) changed in neither of the groups. It is concluded that, in contrast to what has been formerly proposed, training does not result in a general increase in secretory capacity of the anterior pituitary gland. TSH responds to hypoglycemia neither in trained nor in untrained subjects. Finally, differences in beta-endorphin responses to exercise between trained and untrained subjects cannot be ascribed to differences in responsiveness to hypoglycemia.  相似文献

Seven endurance-trained subjects [maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) 64 +/- 1 (SE) ml.min-1.kg-1] were subjected to three sequential hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamps 15 h after having performed their last training session (T). Results were compared with findings in seven untrained subjects (VO2max 44 +/- 2 ml.min-1.kg-1) studied both at rest (UT) and after 60 min of bicycle exercise at 150 W (UT-ex). In T and UT-ex compared with UT, sensitivity for insulin-mediated whole-body glucose uptake was higher [insulin concentrations eliciting half-maximal glucose uptake being 44 +/- 2 (T) and 43 +/- 4 (UT-ex) vs. 52 +/- 3 microU/ml (UT), P less than 0.05] and responsiveness was higher [13.4 +/- 1.2 (T) and 10.9 +/- 0.7 (UT-ex) vs. 9.5 +/- 0.7 mg.min-1.kg-1 (UT), P less than 0.05]. Furthermore, responsiveness was higher (P less than 0.05) in T than in UT-ex. Insulin-stimulated O2 uptake and maximal glucose oxidation rate were higher in T than in UT and UT-ex. Insulin-stimulated conversion or glucose to glycogen and muscle glycogen synthase was higher in T than in UT and UT-ex. However, glycogen storage in vastus lateralis muscle was found only in UT-ex. No change in any glucoregulatory hormone or metabolite could explain the increased insulin action in trained subjects. It is concluded that physical training induces an adaptive increase in insulin responsiveness of whole-body glucose uptake, which does not reflect increased glycogen deposition in muscle.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the rate of decline in blood lactate (La) levels in nine trained men [maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) 65.5 +/- 3.3 ml.kg-1.min-1] and eight untrained men (VO2max 42.2 +/- 2.8 ml.kg-1.min-1) during passive recovery from a 3-min exercise bout. Trained and untrained subjects cycled at 85 and 80% VO2max, respectively, to produce similar peak blood La concentrations. Twenty samples of arterialized venous blood were drawn from a heated hand vein during 60 min of recovery and analyzed in an automated La analyzer. The data were then fitted to a biexponential function, which closely described the observed data (r = 0.97-0.98). There was no difference in the coefficient expressing the rate of decline in blood La for trained and untrained groups (0.0587 +/- 0.0111 vs. 0.0579 +/- 0.0100, respectively). However, trained subjects demonstrated a faster time-to-peak La (P = 0.01), indicative of a faster efflux of La from muscle to blood. Thus the rate of decline in blood La after exercise does not appear to be affected by training. The faster decline previously reported for trained subjects may be due to the use of a linear rather than a biexponential curve fit.  相似文献

Effect of carbohydrate feedings during high-intensity exercise   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
To determine the upper limits of steady-state exercise performance and carbohydrate oxidation late in exercise, seven trained men were studied on two occasions during prolonged cycling that alternated every 15 min between approximately 60% and approximately 85% of VO2max. When fed a sweet placebo throughout exercise, plasma glucose and respiratory exchange ratio (R) declined (P less than 0.05) from 5.0 +/- 0.1 mM and 0.91 +/- 0.01 after 30 min (i.e., at 85% VO2max) to 3.7 +/- 0.3 mM and 0.79 +/- 0.01 at fatigue (i.e., when the subjects were unable to continue exercise at 60% VO2max). Carbohydrate feeding throughout exercise (1 g/kg at 10 min, then 0.6 g/kg every 30 min) increased plasma glucose to approximately 6 mM and partially prevented this decline in carbohydrate oxidation, allowing the men to perform 19% more work (2.74 +/- 0.13 vs. 2.29 +/- 0.09 MJ, P less than 0.05) before fatiguing. Even when fed carbohydrate, however, by the 3rd h of exercise, R had fallen from 0.92 to 0.87, accompanied by a reduction in exercise intensity from approximately 85% to approximately 75% VO2max (both P less than 0.05). These data indicate that carbohydrate feedings enable trained cyclists to exercise at up to 75% VO2max and to oxidize carbohydrate at up to 2 g/min during the later stages of prolonged intense exercise.  相似文献

Chromium excretion of eight trained and five sedentary men was determined on rest days and after exercise to exhaustion at 90% of maximum O2 consumption (VO2max) to determine if degree of physical fitness affects urinary Cr losses. Subjects were fed a constant daily diet containing approximately 9 micrograms Cr/1,000 kcal. VO2max of the trained runners was in the good or above range based on their age and that of the sedentary subjects was average or below. While consuming the control diet, basal urinary Cr excretion of subjects who exercise regularly was significantly lower than that of the sedentary control subjects, 0.09 +/- 0.01 and 0.21 +/- 0.03 microgram/day (mean +/- SE), respectively. When subjects consumed self-chosen diets, basal urinary Cr excretion of the trained subjects was also significantly lower than that of the untrained subjects. Daily urinary Cr excretion of trained subjects was significantly higher on the day of a single exercise bout at 90% VO2max compared with nonexercise days, 0.12 +/- 0.02 and 0.09 +/- 0.01 microgram/day, respectively. Urinary Cr excretion of sedentary subjects was not altered after controlled exercise. These data demonstrate that basal urinary Cr excretion and excretion in response to exercise are related to VO2max and therefore degree of physical fitness.  相似文献

Seven endurance-trained subjects [maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) 64 +/- 1 (SE) ml.min-1.kg-1] underwent sequential hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamps on three occasions: 1) in the "habitual state" 15 h after the last training bout (C), 2) after 60 min of bicycle exercise at 72 +/- 3% of VO2max performed in the habitual state (E), and 3) 5 days after the last ordinary training session (detrained, DT). Sensitivity for insulin-mediated whole-body glucose uptake was not affected by acute exercise [insulin concentrations eliciting 50% of maximal insulin-mediated glucose uptake being 44 +/- 2 (C) vs. 46 +/- 3 (E) microU/ml] but was decreased after detraining (54 +/- 2 microU/ml, P less than 0.05) to levels comparable to those found in untrained subjects [Am. J. Physiol. 254 (Endocrinol. Metab. 17): E248-E259, 1988]. Near-maximal insulin-mediated glucose uptake (responsiveness) was higher than in untrained subjects and not influenced by acute exercise or detraining [13.4 +/- 1.2 (C), 12.2 +/- 0.9 (E), and 12.2 +/- 0.3 (DT) mg.min-1.kg-1]. Calculated by indirect calorimetry, the glucose-to-glycogen conversion was not influenced by E but was reduced during detraining (P less than 0.05) yet remained higher than previously found in untrained subjects (P less than 0.05). However, only on E days did muscle glycogen increase during insulin infusion. The improved glucose tolerance and increased insulin sensitivity associated with regular exercise appear to be the result, in large part, of the residual effects of the last bout of exercise. To determine the effects of exercise intensity on this response, glucose tolerance and the insulin response to a glucose load were determined in seven well-trained male subjects [maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) = 58 ml.kg-1.min-1] and in seven nontrained male subjects (VO2max = 49 ml.kg-1.min-1) in the morning after an overnight fast 1) 40 h after the last training session (control), 2) 14 h after 40 min of exercise on a cycle ergometer at 40% VO2max, and 3) 14 h after 40 min of exercise at 80% VO2max. Subjects replicated their diets for 3 days before each test and ate a standard meal the evening before the oral glucose tolerance test. No differences in the 3-h insulin or glucose response were observed between the control trial and before exercise at either 40 or 80% VO2max in the trained subjects. In the nontrained subjects the plasma insulin response was decreased by 40% after a single bout of exercise at either 40 or 80% VO2max (7.0 X 10(3) vs. 5.0 X 10(3), P less than 0.05; 3.8 X 10(3) microU.ml-1.180 min-1, P less than 0.01). We hypothesized that abnormal endothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDD) found in older otherwise healthy subjects can be attenuated with long-term endurance training. Ten endurance-trained men, 68.5 +/- 2.3 yr old, and 10 healthy sedentary men, 64.7 +/- 1.4 yr old, were studied. Aerobic exercise capacity (VO(2 max)), fasting plasma cholesterol, insulin, and homocysteine concentrations were measured. Master athletes had higher VO(2 max) (42 +/- 2.3 vs. 27 +/- 1.4 ml. kg(-1). min(-1), P < 0.001), slightly higher total cholesterol (226 +/- 8 vs. 199 +/- 8 mg/dl, P = 0.05), similar insulin, and higher homocysteine (10.7 +/- 1.3 vs. 9.2 +/- 1.4 micromol/ml, p = 0.02) concentrations. Brachial arterial diameter, determined with vascular ultrasound, during the hyperemic response was greater in the master athletes than in controls (P = 0.005). Peak vasodilatory response was 109.1 +/- 2 vs. 103.6 +/- 2% (P < 0.05) in the athletes and controls, respectively. Endothelium-independent vasodilation in response to nitroglycerin was similar between the two groups. The increased arterial diameter during the hyperemic response correlated significantly with the VO(2 max) in the entire population (r = 0.66, P < 0.002). Our results suggest that long-term endurance exercise training in older men is associated with systemic enhanced EDD, which is even detectable in the conduit arteries of untrained muscle.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to compare pulmonary gas exchange kinetics (VO2 kinetics) and time to exhaustion (Tlim) between trained and untrained individuals during severe exercise performed on a cycle ergometer and treadmill. Eleven untrained males in running (UR) and cycling (UC), nine endurance cyclists (EC), and seven endurance runners (ER) were submitted to the following tests on separate days: (i) incremental test for determination of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and the intensity associated with the achievement of VO2max (IVO2max) on a mechanical braked cycle ergometer (EC and UC) and on a treadmill (ER and UR); (ii) all-out exercise bout performed at IVO2max to determine the time to exhaustion at IVO2max (Tlim) and the time constant of oxygen uptake kinetics (tau). The tau was significantly faster in trained group, both in cycling (EC = 28.2 +/- 4.7s; UC = 63.8 +/- 25.0s) and in running (ER = 28.5 +/- 8.5s; UR = 59.3 +/- 12.0s). Tlim of untrained was significantly lower in cycling (EC = 384.4 +/- 66.6s vs. UC; 311.1 +/- 105.7 s) and higher in running (ER = 309.2 +/- 176.6 s vs. UR = 439.8 +/- 104.2 s). We conclude that the VO2 kinetic response at the onset of severe exercise, carried out at the same relative intensity is sensitive to endurance training, irrespective of the exercise type. The endurance training seems to differently influence Tlim during exercise at IVO2max in running and cycling.  相似文献

To determine whether increases in muscle mitochondrial capacity are necessary for the characteristic lower exercise glycogen loss and lactate concentration observed during exercise in the trained state, we have employed a short-term training model involving 2 h of cycling per day at 67% maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) for 5-7 consecutive days. Before and after training, biopsies were extracted from the vastus lateralis of nine male subjects during a continuous exercise challenge consisting of 30 min of work at 67% VO2max followed by 30 min at 76% VO2max. Analysis of samples at 0, 15, 20, and 60 min indicated a pronounced reduction (P less than 0.05) in glycogen utilization after training. Reductions in glycogen utilization were accompanied by reductions (P less than 0.05) in muscle lactate concentration (mmol/kg dry wt) at 15 min [37.4 +/- 9.3 (SE) vs. 20.2 +/- 5.3], 30 min (30.5 +/- 6.9 vs. 17.6 +/- 3.8), and 60 min (26.5 +/- 5.8 vs. 17.8 +/- 3.5) of exercise. Maximal aerobic power, VO2max (l/min) was unaffected by the training (3.99 +/- 0.21 vs. 4.05 +/- 0.26). Measurements of maximal activities of enzymes representative of the citric acid cycle (succinic dehydrogenase and citrate synthase) were similar before and after the training. It is concluded that, in the voluntary exercising human, altered metabolic events are an early adaptive response to training and need not be accompanied by changes in muscle mitochondrial capacity.  相似文献

The effects of carbohydrate and fat intake on exercise-induced fatigue was investigated in 30 untrained--(VO2max of 40.6 +/- 2.7 ml X kg-1 X min-1) and 24 trained-subjects (VO2max of 52.3 +/- 2.7 ml X kg-1 X min-1) performing a 34 km march with a 25 kg backpack. Marching time was 8 1/2 h and 6 1/3 h in the untrained and trained-subjects respectively. The subjects were divided into 3 dietary groups. One group had free access to sugar cubes, the second group was offered almonds and the third one served as a control. Triglyceride levels decreased by 65 mg X dl-1 in untrained, and by 115 mg X dl-1 in trained subjects, while blood glucose remained at normal levels. In the untrained subjects, ingestion of almonds delayed the subjective sensation of exhaustion, while 50% of the controls and the sugar consuming subjects complained of exhaustion. The data suggest that ingestion of food containing fat delays exercise induced exhaustion or fatigue to a greater extent than does carbohydrate ingestion.  相似文献

We investigated arm perfusion and metabolism during upper body exercise. Eight average, fit subjects and seven rowers, mean +/- SE maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) 157 +/- 7 and 223 +/- 14 ml O2. kg(-0.73).min(-1), respectively, performed incremental arm cranking to exhaustion. Arm blood flow (ABF) was measured with thermodilution and arm muscle mass was estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. During maximal arm cranking, pulmonary VO2 was approximately 45% higher in the rowers compared with the untrained subjects and peak ABF was 6.44 +/- 0.40 and 4.55 +/- 0.26 l/min, respectively (P < 0.05). The arm muscle mass for the rowers and the untrained subjects was 3.5 +/- 0.4 and 3.3 +/- 0.1 kg, i.e., arm perfusion was 1.9 +/- 0.2 and 1.4 +/- 0.1 l blood.kg(-1).min(-1), respectively (P < 0.05). The arteriovenous O2 difference was 156 +/- 7 and 120 +/- 8 ml/l, respectively, and arm VO2 was 0.98 +/- 0.08 and 0.60 +/- 0.04 l/min corresponding with 281 +/- 22 and 181 +/- 12 ml/kg, while arm O(2) diffusional conductance was 49.9 +/- 4.3 and 18.6 +/- 3.2 ml.min(-1).mmHg(-1), respectively (P < 0.05). Also, lactate release in the rowers was almost three times higher than in the untrained subjects (26.4 +/- 1.1 vs. 9.5 +/- 0.4 mmol/min, P < 0.05). The energy requirement of an approximately 50% larger arm work capacity after long-term arm endurance training is covered by an approximately 60% increase in aerobic metabolism and an almost tripling of the anaerobic capacity.  相似文献

Six trained male cyclists and six untrained sedentary men were studied to determine whether the plasma lactate threshold (PLT) and ventilation threshold (VT) occur at the same work rate in both fit and unfit populations. The PLT was determined from a marked increase in plasma lactate concentration ([La]) and VT from a nonlinear increase in expired minute ventilation (VE) during incremental leg-cycling tests; work rate was increased 30 W every 2 min until volitional exhaustion. The trained subjects' mean VO2 max (63.8 ml O2 X kg-1 X min-1) and VT (65.8% VO2 max) were significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than the untrained subjects' mean VO2max (35.5 ml O2 X kg-1 X min-1) and VT (51.4% VO2 max). The trained subjects' mean PLT (68.8% VO2 max) and VT did not differ significantly, but the untrained subjects' mean PLT (61.6% VO2 max) was significantly higher than their VT. The trained subjects' mean peak [La] (10.5 mmol X l-1) did not differ significantly from the untrained subjects' mean peak [La] (11.5 mmol X l-1). However, the time of appearance of the peak [La] during passive recovery was inversely related to VO2 max. These results suggest that variance in lactate diffusion and/or removal processes between the trained and untrained subjects may account in part for the different relationships between the VT and PLT in each population.  相似文献

The effect of training on VO2 max, endurance capacity (EC) and ventilation during maximal exercise (VE max) were studied in 17 normal subjects aged 21--51 years. At the beginning of the study 11 of the subjects (eight women and three men) were untrained (U) and six others (three women and three men) trained regulatory (T). A maximal intensity exercise (on a cycle ergometer) which could be sustained for 45 min (MIE45) was performed three times per week for 6 weeks; the total mechanical work (TMW) corresponding to the MIE45 per session varied between 3.14 and 9.24 kJ . kg-1. Before training, VO2 max (a), VEmax (b), and TMW (c) were higher in T than in U subjects. Training increased these variables in most of the subjects; the increase being significantly higher (mean +/- SEM) in U (a = +29.9 +/- 3.8%; b = 49.6 +/- 6.5%; c = 47 +/- 6.9%) than in T subjects (a = 6.6 +/- 3.8%; b = 17.5 +/- 3.6+; c = 19.1 +/- 2.8%). In all but three cases the % increase of TMW was higher than that of VO2 max, suggesting a higher sensitivity of TMW in measuring EC. The significant increase in VE max, maximal voluntary ventilation, peak flows (inspiratory and expiratory) and static maximum voluntary ventilation, peak flows (inspiratory and expiratory) and static maximum pressures indicate that this training protocol improves in healthy subjects the performance of respiratory muscles as well.  相似文献

This study compared the body water turnover in endurance athletes and age-matched sedentary men. Eight competitive endurance athletes (20.8+/-1.9 yr) and age-matched eight sedentary men (21.6+/-2.5 yr) participated in this study. Total body water and body water turnover were measured using the deuterium (D(2)O) dilution technique. Urine samples were obtained every day for 10 days after oral administration of D(2)O. The day-by-day concentrations were used to calculate the biological half-life of D(2)O and body water turnover. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) and oxygen uptake corresponding to ventilatory threshold (VO(2VT)) as an index of aerobic capacity were determined during a graded exercise test. Both VO(2max) and VO(2VT) were higher in the exercise group than in the sedentary group (P<0.05). The biological half-life of D(2)O was significantly shorter in the exercise group than in the sedentary group (5.89+/-0.81 days vs. 7.52+/-0.77 days, P<0.05), and the percentage of the body water turnover was significantly higher in the exercise group than in the sedentary group (11.99+/-1.96% vs. 9.39+/-1.21%, P<0.05). The body water turnover was correlated with VO(2max) and VO(2VT), respectively (P<0.05). Based on these findings, this study speculates that a level of physical activity may induce a body water turnover higher in the healthy state, since the better trained subjects have a higher body water turnover.  相似文献

We determined the effect of fat adaptation on metabolism and performance during 5 h of cycling in seven competitive athletes who consumed a standard carbohydrate (CHO) diet for 1 day and then either a high-CHO diet (11 g. kg(-1)x day(-1) CHO, 1 g x kg(-1) x day(-1) fat; HCHO) or an isoenergetic high-fat diet (2.6 g x kg(-1) x day(-1) CHO, 4.6 g x kg(-1) x day(-1) fat; fat-adapt) for 6 days. On day 8, subjects consumed a high-CHO diet and rested. On day 9, subjects consumed a preexercise meal and then cycled for 4 h at 65% peak O(2) uptake, followed by a 1-h time trial (TT). Compared with baseline, 6 days of fat-adapt reduced respiratory exchange ratio (RER) with cycling at 65% peak O(2) uptake [0.78 +/- 0.01 (SE) vs. 0.85 +/- 0.02; P < 0.05]. However, RER was restored by 1 day of high-CHO diet, preexercise meal, and CHO ingestion (0.88 +/- 0.01; P < 0.05). RER was higher after HCHO than fat-adapt (0.85 +/- 0.01, 0.89 +/- 0.01, and 0.93 +/- 0.01 for days 2, 8, and 9, respectively; P < 0.05). Fat oxidation during the 4-h ride was greater (171 +/- 32 vs. 119 +/- 38 g; P < 0.05) and CHO oxidation lower (597 +/- 41 vs. 719 +/- 46 g; P < 0.05) after fat-adapt. Power output was 11% higher during the TT after fat-adapt than after HCHO (312 +/- 15 vs. 279 +/- 20 W; P = 0.11). In conclusion, compared with a high-CHO diet, fat oxidation during exercise increased after fat-adapt and remained elevated above baseline even after 1 day of a high-CHO diet and increased CHO availability. However, this study failed to detect a significant benefit of fat adaptation to performance of a 1-h TT undertaken after 4 h of cycling.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether endurance exercise training increases the ability of human skeletal muscle to accumulate glycogen after exercise. Subjects (4 women and 2 men, 31 +/- 8 yr old) performed high-intensity stationary cycling 3 days/wk and continuous running 3 days/wk for 10 wk. Muscle glycogen concentration was measured after a glycogen-depleting exercise bout before and after endurance training. Muscle glycogen accumulation rate from 15 min to 6 h after exercise was twofold higher (P < 0.05) in the trained than in the untrained state: 10.5 +/- 0.2 and 4.5 +/- 1.3 mmol. kg wet wt(-1). h(-1), respectively. Muscle glycogen concentration was higher (P < 0.05) in the trained than in the untrained state at 15 min, 6 h, and 48 h after exercise. Muscle GLUT-4 content after exercise was twofold higher (P < 0.05) in the trained than in the untrained state (10.7 +/- 1.2 and 4.7 +/- 0.7 optical density units, respectively) and was correlated with muscle glycogen concentration 6 h after exercise (r = 0.64, P < 0.05). Total glycogen synthase activity and the percentage of glycogen synthase I were not significantly different before and after training at 15 min, 6 h, and 48 h after exercise. We conclude that endurance exercise training enhances the capacity of human skeletal muscle to accumulate glycogen after glycogen-depleting exercise.  相似文献

The increase in nuclear magnetic resonance transverse relaxation time (T(2)) of muscle water measured by magnetic resonance imaging after exercise has been correlated with work rate in human subjects. This study compared the T(2) increase in thigh muscles of trained (cycling VO(2 max) = 54.4 +/- 2.7 ml O(2). kg(-1). min(-1), mean +/- SE, n = 8, 4 female) vs. sedentary (31.7 +/- 0.9 ml O(2). kg(-1). min(-1), n = 8, 4 female) subjects after cycling exercise for 6 min at 50 and 90% of the subjects' individually determined VO(2 max). There was no significant difference between groups in the T(2) increase measured in quadriceps muscles within 3 min after the exercises, despite the fact that the absolute work rates were 60% higher in the trained group (253 +/- 15 vs. 159 +/- 21 W for the 90% exercise). In both groups, the increase in T(2) of vastus muscles was twofold greater after the 90% exercise than after the 50% exercise. The recovery of T(2) after the 90% exercise was significantly faster in vastus muscles of the trained compared with the sedentary group (mean recovery half-time 11.9 +/- 1.2 vs. 23.3 +/- 3.7 min). The results show that the increase in muscle T(2) varies with work rate relative to muscle maximum aerobic power, not with absolute work rate.  相似文献
