Our perception that host-bacterial interactions lead to disease comes from rare, unsuccessful interactions resulting in the development of detectable symptoms. In contrast, the majority of host-bacterial interactions go unnoticed as the host and bacteria perceive each other to be no threat. In July 2004, a focused international symposium on epithelial-bacterial pathogen interactions was held in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK). The symposium concentrated on recent advances in our understanding of bacterial interactions at respiratory and gastrointestinal mucosal epithelial layers. For the host these epithelial tissues represent a first line of defence against invading bacterial pathogens. Through the discovery that the innate immune system plays a pivotal role during host-bacterial interactions, it has become clear that epithelia are being utilized by the host to monitor or communicate with both pathogenic and commensal bacteria. Interest in understanding the bacterial perspective of these interactions has lead researchers to realize that the bacteria utilize the same factors associated with disease to establish successful long-term interactions. Here we discuss several common themes and concepts that emerged from recent studies that have allowed physiologists and microbiologists to interact at a common interface similar to their counterparts -- epithelia and bacterial pathogens. These studies highlight the need for further multidisciplinary studies into how the host differentiates between pathogenic and commensal bacteria.  相似文献

Many fundamental processes in cell biology are regulated by Rho GTPases, including cell adhesion, migration and differentiation. While regulating cellular functions, members of the Rho protein family cooperate or antagonize each other. The resulting molecular network exhibits many levels of interaction dynamically regulated in time and space. In the first part of this review we describe the main mechanisms of this crosstalk, which can occur at three different levels of the pathway: (i) through regulation of activity, (ii) through regulation of protein expression and stability, and (iii) through regulation of downstream signaling pathways. In the second part we illustrate the importance of Rho protein crosstalk with two examples: integrin-based adhesion and cell migration.  相似文献

Two different ant–Acacia ecosystems at two different sites were investigated for comparing their lifestyles. One ecosystem is at St. Katherine's Protectorate and the other at Ismailia Province, Egypt. The defense mechanisms that each Acacia tree use against browsers were investigated. Seasonal and daily abundances of ants and other herbivores on two Acacia trees were studied. The study indicated different defense mechanisms used by these two Acacia species: Acacia use both physical and chemical defense mechanisms. The efficiency of both mechanisms in defending Acacia against herbivores and why Acacia trees preferred one mechanism to the other are discussed.  相似文献

Background

This study designed and applied accessible yet systematic methods to generate baseline information about the patterns and structure of Canada''s neglected tropical disease (NTD) research network; a network that, until recently, was formed and functioned on the periphery of strategic Canadian research funding.

Methodology

Multiple methods were used to conduct this study, including: (1) a systematic bibliometric procedure to capture archival NTD publications and co-authorship data; (2) a country-level “core-periphery” network analysis to measure and map the structure of Canada''s NTD co-authorship network including its size, density, cliques, and centralization; and (3) a statistical analysis to test the correlation between the position of countries in Canada''s NTD network (“k-core measure”) and the quantity and quality of research produced.

Principal Findings

Over the past sixty years (1950–2010), Canadian researchers have contributed to 1,079 NTD publications, specializing in Leishmania, African sleeping sickness, and leprosy. Of this work, 70% of all first authors and co-authors (n = 4,145) have been Canadian. Since the 1990s, however, a network of international co-authorship activity has been emerging, with representation of researchers from 62 different countries; largely researchers from OECD countries (e.g. United States and United Kingdom) and some non-OECD countries (e.g. Brazil and Iran). Canada has a core-periphery NTD international research structure, with a densely connected group of OECD countries and some African nations, such as Uganda and Kenya. Sitting predominantly on the periphery of this research network is a cluster of 16 non-OECD nations that fall within the lowest GDP percentile of the network.

Conclusion/Significance

The publication specialties, composition, and position of NTD researchers within Canada''s NTD country network provide evidence that while Canadian researchers currently remain the overall gatekeepers of the NTD research they generate; there is opportunity to leverage existing research collaborations and help advance regions and NTD areas that are currently under-developed.  相似文献

The proper development of fruits is important for the sexual reproduction and propagation of many plant species. The fruit of Arabidopsis derives from the fertilized gynoecium, which initiates at the center of the flower and obtains its final shape, size, and functional tissues through progressive stages of development. Hormones, specially auxins, play important roles in gynoecium and fruit patterning. Cytokinins, which act as counterparts to auxins in other plant tissues, have been studied more in the context of ovule formation and parthenocarpy. We recently studied the role of cytokinins in gynoecium and fruit patterning and found that they have more than one role during gynoecium and fruit patterning. We also compared the cytokinin response localization to the auxin response localization in these organs, and studied the effects of spraying cytokinins in young flowers of an auxin response line. In this addendum, we discuss further the implications of the observed results in the knowledge about the relationship between cytokinins and auxins at the gynoecium.  相似文献

Nematodes – there is more to it … Nematodes play a central role – not only in a negative way as dreaded parasites of humans, animals and plants, where they may be harmful in terms of health and economy. The majority of nematodes turn out to be highly beneficial: Firstly, they are a vital part of the food web and by this indispensably involved in nutrient cycles.
