Pickering, Gisèle P., Nicole Fellmann, BéatriceMorio, Patrick Ritz, Aimé Amonchot, Michel Vermorel, and JeanCoudert. Effects of endurance training on the cardiovascularsystem and water compartments in elderly subjects. J. Appl. Physiol. 83(4): 1300-1306, 1997.Theeffects of endurance training on the water compartments and thecardiovascular system were determined in 10 elderly subjects [age62 ± 2 yr, pretraining maximal oxygen consumption(O2 max)/kg = 25 ± 2 ml · min1 · kg1body wt]. They trained on a cycloergometer 3 times/wk for 16 wk(50-80%O2 max, then 80-85%O2 max). They werechecked at 8 wk, 16 wk, and 4 mo after detraining. Training improvedO2 max (+16%) andinduced plasma volume expansion (+11%). No change in total body water, extracellular fluid, interstitial and intracellular fluid volumes,fat-free mass, and body weight was detected in this small sample withtraining. Body fat mass decreased (2.1 ± 2.2 kg).Echocardiography at rest showed increased fractional shortening andejection fraction and decreased left ventricular end-systolic dimension(P < 0.05). Blood volume expansioncorrelates with cardiac contractility and has an impact on cardiacfunction. These improvements are precarious, however, and arecompletely lost after 4 mo of detraining, when elderly subjects losethe constraints and the social stimulation of the imposed protocol.

The authors presented clinical and x-ray findings of 188 patients with mechanical intestinal obstruction (92 of them were middle-aged and advanced in years and 96 were under 60). A combined program of x-ray examination included 3 stages: panoramic polypositional roentgenography of the chest and abdominal cavity, dynamic x-ray control over the state of the abdominal cavity, and contrast study of the G.I. tract. A distinctive feature of the x-ray symptomatology of intestinal obstruction in middle-aged and old patients was the absence of classical x-ray symptoms in some cases during panoramic roentgenography of the abdominal cavity. In patients over 60, x-ray symptomatology was characterized by marked colon distension and intestinal distension of various degree in 77.1%  相似文献

The aims of this study were 1) to evaluate whether subjects suffering from acute mountain sickness (AMS) during exposure to high altitude have signs of autonomic dysfunction and 2) to verify whether autonomic variables at low altitude may identify subjects who are prone to develop AMS. Forty-one mountaineers were studied at 4,559-m altitude. AMS was diagnosed using the Lake Louise score, and autonomic cardiovascular function was explored using spectral analysis of R-R interval and blood pressure (BP) variability on 10-min resting recordings. Seventeen subjects (41%) had AMS. Subjects with AMS were older than those without AMS (P < 0.01). At high altitude, the low-frequency (LF) component of systolic BP variability (LF(SBP)) was higher (P = 0.02) and the LF component of R-R variability in normalized units (LF(RR)NU) was lower (P = 0.001) in subjects with AMS. After 3 mo, 21 subjects (43% with AMS) repeated the evaluation at low altitude at rest and in response to a hypoxic gas mixture. LF(RR)NU was similar in the two groups at baseline and during hypoxia at low altitude but increased only in subjects without AMS at high altitude (P < 0.001) and did not change between low and high altitude in subjects with AMS. Conversely, LF(SBP) increased significantly during short-term hypoxia only in subjects with AMS, who also had higher resting BP (P < 0.05) than those without AMS. Autonomic cardiovascular dysfunction accompanies AMS. Marked LF(SBP) response to short-term hypoxia identifies AMS-prone subjects, supporting the potential role of an exaggerated individual chemoreflex vasoconstrictive response to hypoxia in the genesis of AMS.  相似文献

The effect of sympathomimetic tyramine on the systemic and regional hemodynamic parameters was studied by the radioactive microsphere technique in experiments on conscious streptozotocin-diabetic and age-matched control rats. The dose of tyramine required for blood pressure elevation on 15-20 mm Hg was 5.6 times as large in diabetic rats as compared to control animals. It was suggested that sympathetic neuropathy may play the role in the development of the cardiovascular alterations in streptozotocin-diabetic rats.  相似文献

Reaction times (RTs) and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded in middle-aged (MA) and elderly (ELD) subjects performing an auditory selective attention task. Subjets attended to tone bursts of a specified pitch and ear of delivery and responded to occasional longer duration target tones (75 vs. 25 msec). Infrequent novel stimuli (computer synthesized sounds and digitized environmental noises) were also included in the stimulus sequence. No significant age-related differences were found in the speed or accuracy of target detection. However, in both groups, RTs were delayed (by more than 300 msec) to targets that followed novel sounds. The prolongation was greater following novel sounds in the attended ear, particularly in the ELD group. The effects of selective attention on ERPs to standard tones were isolated as negative difference waves (Nds) by subtracting ERPs to non-attended stimuli from ERPs to the same signals when attended. Nds had similar amplitudes, latencies of onset (60 msec), and distributions in ELD and MA groups. In both groups, Nd waves were more prominent following right ear stimulation, reflecting possible hemispheric asymmetries of generators in posterior temporal regions. The mismatch negativity (MMN) was isolated by subtracting ERPs to standard tones from ERPs to deviant stimuli. MMN amplitudes were reduced in the ELD group. There was also a significant change in MMN distribution with age: the MMN was larger over the right hemisphere for MA subjects but larger over the left for ELD subjects. Elderly subjects showed a trend toward smaller P3 amplitudes and delayed P3 latencies, but group differences did not reach statistical significance. ERPs to novel sounds were characterized by centrally distributed N2 and P3a components. Although the novel P3a was enhanced with attention, no novel Nd waves could be isolated. This suggests that novel sounds fell outside the focus of attention.  相似文献

The roles that nitric oxide (NO) plays in the cardiovascular system of reptiles are reviewed, with particular emphasis on its effects on central vascular blood flows in the systemic and pulmonary circulations. New data is presented that describes the effects on hemodynamic variables in varanid lizards of exogenously administered NO via the nitric oxide donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and inhibition of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) by l-nitroarginine methyl ester (l-NAME). Furthermore, preliminary data on the effects of SNP on hemodynamic variables in the tegu lizard are presented. The findings are compared with previously published data from our laboratory on three other species of reptiles: pythons (), rattlesnakes () and turtles (). These five species of reptiles possess different combinations of division of the heart and structural complexity of the lungs. Comparison of their responses to NO donors and NOS inhibitors may reveal whether the potential contribution of NO to vascular tone correlates with pulmonary complexity and/or with blood pressure. All existing studies on reptiles have clearly established a potential role for NO in regulating vascular tone in the systemic circulation and NO may be important for maintaining basal systemic vascular tone in varanid lizards, pythons and turtles, through a continuous release of NO. In contrast, the pulmonary circulation is less responsive to NO donors or NOS inhibitors, and it was only in pythons and varanid lizards that the lungs responded to SNP. Both species have a functionally separated heart, so it is possible that NO may exert a larger role in species with low pulmonary blood pressures, irrespective of lung complexity.  相似文献

Neural components important in control of the cardiovascular system during exercise can be divided into central nervous system (CNS) components and peripheral components. CNS components would include the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, medullary region of the brain stem, and the spinal cord. Peripheral components would include the efferent limbs of the autonomic nervous system and afferent fibers carrying information to the CNS. The neural pathways involved in the control of cardiovascular system during exercise and the relationship between the various neural components have been actively pursued in the last few years. Several new studies suggest that information arising from the active muscles and the cardiovascular system itself may be important in the control of the cardiovascular system during exercise. The cerebellum may play a modulating role in the cardiovascular response. The information from the peripheral afferent fibers, the cerebellum, and the cerebral cortex is integrated in the brain to result in overall neural control. Exercise training probably modifies the central integration of information and modifies the cardiovascular response to exercise and other stresses.  相似文献

Changes in beta-adrenergic regulation of the cardiovascular system in aging involved 40 healthy subjects aged 20-34, 60-74 and 75-89 have been studied. Single drug loads with propranolol (0.6 mg/kg, per os) and isadrin (10 mg, sublingually) were used. With aging, the beta-adrenergic regulation of heart at various levels (in the central and autonomic vegetative nervous system, the ACTH-cortisol system) changes. The negative effect of beta-adrenergic blockade on the cardiovascular system enhances, that is a result of a more significant suppression of the sympathetic effects on the heart and peculiarities of the propranolol pharmacokinetics in old age. The reactivity of beta-adrenergic mechanisms in response to their stimulation decreases as well. Blockade of the beta-adrenoreceptors produces a distinct saving effect on the performance of the cardio-respiratory system under conditions of physical loading, that is due to a suppression of sympathetic hyperactivity and elimination of excess strain in the ACTH-cortisol system at the peak submaximal physical loading.  相似文献
