Manihot allemii M. J. Silva is described and illustrated as a new species, and its morphological affinities and conservation status is discussed. It is most similar to M. salicifolia Pohl in having a subshrubby and erect habit and in the general aspect of its unlobed leaves, but differs from it in having leaves that are conspicuously petiolate, an inflorescence that is a congested spike‐like thyrse, entire and diminute bracts and bracteoles subtending flowers of both sexes, pistillate calyx that is deeply lobed with oblong lobes, and staminate flowers with 8 or 10 stamens. Both species belong to a group of 14 species recognized by their possession of entire and unlobed leaves, which are the subject of taxonomic studies by the second author. Some notes on the leaf anatomy of species of Manihot that have entire and unlobed leaves are also presented.  相似文献

Morphological diversity is often caused by altered gene expression of key developmental regulators. However, the precise developmental trajectories through which morphologies evolved remain poorly understood. It is also unclear to what degree genetic changes contributing to morphological divergence were fixed by natural selection. Here we investigate these problems in the context of evolutionary developmental transitions that produced the simple unlobed leaf of the model species Arabidopsis thaliana. We demonstrate that A. thaliana leaf shape likely derived from a more complex lobed ancestral state that persists in extant Arabidopsis species. We also show that evolution of the unlobed leaf form in A. thaliana involved loss of expression of the knotted1-like homeobox gene SHOOTMERISTEMLESS (STM) in leaves and that cis-regulatory divergence contributed to this process. Further, we provide evidence for a selective sweep at the A. thaliana STM locus, indicating that loss of STM expression in A. thaliana leaves may have been fixed by positive selection. In summary, our data provide key information as to when and how the characteristic leaf form of A. thaliana evolved.  相似文献

In order to understand the amount of DNA content variation and its potential roles, both absolute DNA amount and cell cycle phases in 22 half-sib families of jack pine were examined using flow cytometry. When the variability due to differences in speed of germination was taken into account, embryos from superior families (classified on the basis of height growth during field trials) had significantly higher levels of all nuclei classes greater than 4C. Mean DNA contents per nucleus were significantly lower in embryos from superior families compared to inferior ones. Analysis of megagametophyte tissue showed that the mother trees of these embryos expressed a similar pattern. Absolute DNA values were also established on the emerging radicle and the hypocotyl + cotyledons region (HC) separately in five of the families. Nuclei isolated from the emerging radicles had significantly lower levels of DNA than those isolated from the HC region. For three of these families, absolute DNA values from nuclei of the hypocotyl + cotyledons region were established on individual embryos with varying cotyledon numbers. In all three families total DNA amount per nucleus decreased with increasing cotyledon number. A better understanding of differences observed in DNA content during germination, as well as in total DNA content per nuclei among different half-sib families of jack pine, may help in the identification of factors that influence growth and adaptation of this species.  相似文献

Trees of Sassafras albidum (Nuttall) Nees. display leaves that fall into discrete categories of form. Unlobed leaves, with undissected margins, predominate at proximal and distal nodes of shoots, while lobed leaves are most common at intermediate nodes. In this study we investigated the hypothesis that shoots of sassafras respond to environmental changes over the growing season by generating predictable nodal patterns for leaf morphology and physiology. We recorded leaf shape category and measured leaf surface area, node number, chlorophyll content, nitrogen content, and photosynthesis in four trees. Over 1,000 measurements of photosynthesis were made in situ, using the LI-Cor LI 6200 portable photosynthesis system. The two trees growing under heavy shade had few lobed leaves (2.0% and 18.8%) and often had negative carbon balance, with positive net photosynthesis occurring during sun flecks. The two trees growing in more open conditions had many more lobed leaves (56.3% and 61.0%) and higher, less variable net photosynthetic rates. As indicated by chlorophyll and nitrogen contents, the highest leaf photosynthetic rates occurred at intermediate nodes (nodes six to nine), and this was shifted distally along the shoot during the growing season. Leaves at intermediate nodes also had the largest surface areas and the greatest frequency of lobing. In comparative experiments with models, lobing was shown to enhance free-convectional heat loss relative to unlobed leaves of the same surface area. Due to their large surface area, these leaves also have the highest rates of whole leaf photosynthesis. Under conditions of equivalent photosynthetically active radiation, lobed leaves had higher rates of net photosynthesis than did unlobed leaves. We conclude that shoots of sassafras produce groups of leaves with predictably different morphological and physiological specializations.  相似文献

Gynoecium diversity and systematics of the paleoherbs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Gynoecium and ovule structure was compared in representatives of all families of the paleoherbs, including Nymphaeales (Cabombaceae, Nymphaeaceae), Piperales (Saururaceae, Piperaceae), Aristolochiales (Lactoridaceae, Aristolochiaceae), Rafflesiales (Hydnoraceae, Rafflesiaceae) and, in addition, Ceratophyllaceae and Nelumbonaceae, both of which were earlier included in Nymphaeales, but then segregated and with an unestablished position. In all representatives studied, the carpels are closed at anthesis. Carpel closure is attained in three different ways: (1) postgenital fusion of inner surfaces (Piperales, Aristolochiales); (2) occlusion by secretion or mutual appression of inner surfaces without postgenital fusion (Cabombaceae, Ceratophyllaceae, Nelumbonaceae (?) or (3) strong secretion combined with postgenital fusion at the periphery of the carpel (Nymphaeaceae). In Cytinus (Rafflesiaceae), after an earlier developmental stage with apparent postgenital fusion there is strong internal secretion (within the cell walls). Stigma shape tends to be double-crested in the basal taxa of each order: Cabombaceae (Brasenia), Saururaceae, and Lactoridaceae. In some Aristolochiaceae and Cytinus (Rafflesiaceae) they have two lobes in the transverse symmetry plane (i. e. at right angles to the median plane) or, if the carpels are united, the stigmatic lobes are commissural, accordingly. Stigmas are unicellular papillate and secretory in most taxa, but the papillae are uniseriate-pluricellular in some (not basal) Nymphaeaceae, Asaroideae (Aristolochiaceae) and Cytinus (Rafflesiaceae). Ceratophyllaceae have smooth stigmas. Intrusive oil cells in the carpel epidermis were found in Piperales and Aristolochiaceae. Mature ovules vary in length between 0. 2 mm and 2. 5 mm. Mature nucelli vary in breadth between 0. 03 mm and 1. 6 mm. These differences are larger than in the other major magnoliid groups. The outer integument is fully annular (not semiannular) in all taxa with orthotropous ovules (all Piperales and Barclaya of Nymphaeaceae) and also in some with anatropous ovules (some Nymphaeaceae, some Aristolochiaceae). The integuments are variously lobed or unlobed; both integuments tend to exhibit the same behaviour within a family, either both lobed or both unlobed. The results strongly support three pairs of families in sister group relationships, as suggested by studies based on other characters: Cabombaceae-Nymphaeaceae, Saururaceae-Piperaceae, and Lactoridaceae-Aristolochiaceae, and Hydnoraceae-Rafflesiaceae to some extent. Piperales and Aristolochiales are closer to each other than either is to Nymphaeales. Nelumbonaceae is isolated, as is Ceratophyllaceae, but the status of the latter is more difficult to interpret owing to apparent reduction in morphological, anatomical and histological traits.  相似文献

Summary The response of caudal neurosecretory cells in Salvelinus fontinalis to exposure to media in which one ion (Na, K, Mg, Ca and Cl) was either selectively enriched or depleted was evaluated by morphometric criteria. Morphological changes indicating stimulation of synthetic activity were observed: exposure to sea water with low potassium concentration was the most efficacious in inducing the increase in the average diameter of caudal cells and the number of nucleoli for both cells with lobed and with nonlobed nuclei. The proportion of cells with lobed nuclei was also increased. To a lesser degree and in decreasing order, experimental milieu with modified magnesium contents, either fresh water enriched in this ion or seawater depleted of the same ion, and fresh water enriched in calcium also resulted in significant increases in cell diameter and the number of nucleoli. The two cytological cell types, viz cells with non-lobed nuclei or cells with lobed nuclei, are interpreted as being linked to different levels of neurosecretory activity.Supported by NSERC (Canada)  相似文献

Background and Aims The genetic basis of leaf shape has long interested botanists because leaf shape varies extensively across the plant kingdom and this variation is probably adaptive. However, knowledge of the genetic architecture of leaf shape variation in natural populations remains limited. This study examined the genetic architecture of leaf shape diversification among three edaphic specialists in the Mimulus guttatus species complex. Lobed and narrow leaves have evolved from the entire, round leaves of M. guttatus in M. laciniatus, M. nudatus and a polymorphic serpentine M. guttatus population (M2L).Methods Bulk segregant analysis and next-generation sequencing were used to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that underlie leaf shape in an M. laciniatus × M. guttatus F2 population. To determine whether the same QTLs contribute to leaf shape variation in M. nudatus and M2L, F2s from M. guttatus × M. nudatus and lobed M2L × unlobed M. guttatus crosses were genotyped at QTLs from the bulk segregant analysis.Key Results Narrow and lobed leaf shapes in M. laciniatus, M. nudatus and M. guttatus are controlled by overlapping genetic regions. Several promising leaf shape candidate genes were found under each QTL.Conclusions The evolution of divergent leaf shape has taken place multiple times in the M. guttatus species complex and is associated with the occupation of dry, rocky environments. The genetic architecture of elongated and lobed leaves is similar across three species in this group. This may indicate that parallel genetic evolution from standing variation or new mutations is responsible for the putatively adaptive leaf shape variation in Mimulus.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies were generated against serotonin (5-HT) and the C-terminal portion of the neuronal form of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), the enzyme producing nitric oxide in neurons. These antibodies were used to compare the distribution of 5-HT- and nNOS-containing neurons in the raphe nuclei of four animal species (rat, mouse, guinea pig, and cat). It was found that the rat was the only species in which the raphe nuclei contain a substantial number of nNOS-immunoreactive (IR) cell bodies. In this species and as observed by other authors, all mesencephalic raphe nuclei contained nNOS-IR cells, the largest group being located in the nucleus raphe dorsalis. The coexistence of nNOS and 5-HT immunoreactivities in these nuclei was visualized by double labeling. In the medulla, the nuclei raphe magnus and obscurus displayed a rather low number of nNOS-IR neurons. In the other species, nNOS-IR cell bodies were found in very low numbers, whatever raphe nucleus was considered. The rostral pole of the nucleus raphe dorsalis and the nuclei raphe magnus and obscurus contained a few nNOS-IR neurons which did not show any coincidence with the 5-HT neurons. In addition, nNOS-IR axons were rare. It is concluded that in the mouse, guinea pig, and cat the involvement of nitric oxide in functions subserved by 5-HT within the raphe nuclei might be minimal. In contrast to popular belief, a rich variety of morphological characteristics exists in the imperfect states of powdery mildews. Because it has been generally assumed that species cannot be distinguished by their appressoria, haustoria, conidiophores, conidia, fibrosin bodies, and conidial germ tubes, their morphology has received little attention and several older publications have even been forgotten. As with the perfect states, few species can be recognized by one characteristic of the imperfect state alone but many species can be identified when a combination of several characteristics is used. Important characteristics are the location of the mycelium, the production of conidia singly or in chains, the presence or absence of conspicuous fibrosin bodies, the appressoria, the size and shape of the conidia, and the position and type of their germ tubes. Many species are associated with particular families or genera of plants and therefore these are included in a key to identify 131 species of powdery mildew. This key shows how much and especially how little is known about many species. It is hoped that this review will stimulate study of the morphology of the imperfect states of numerous species. Consideration of both the perfect and the imperfect state should result in a more natural classification of several genera, for exampleUncinula andErysiphe which at present include both species which produce conidia in long chains and those which produce conidia singly. It appears that there are two lines of development of the imperfect states. One is characterized by lobed appressoria and conidiophores which produce conidia singly. The other is characterized by more or less rounded, unlobed appressoria and conidiophores which produce conidia in chains. A better knowledge of all the different imperfect states may provide more information regarding the evolution of powdery mildews.  相似文献

The synthesis of RNA in guinea pig leukocytes was investigated during sensitization by the use of tritiated uridine. The increase of the number of RNA-synthetizing heterophils was found in 21st day of sensitization. That was connected with morphological features of heterophils nuclei. Among lymphocytes in 11th day of sensitization the subpopulation of cells intensively synthetizing RNA was observed. The possible role of cells, which synthetize RNA in the process of sensitization is discussed.  相似文献

To determine the level at which certain response characteristics originate, we compared monaural auditory responses of neurons in ventral cochlear nucleus, nuclei of lateral lemniscus and inferior colliculus. Characteristics examined were sharpness of frequency tuning, latency variability for individual neurons and range of latencies across neurons.Exceptionally broad tuning curves were found in the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus, while exceptionally narrow tuning curves were found in the inferior colliculus. Neither specialized tuning characteristic was found in the ventral cochlear nuclei. All neurons in the columnar division of the ventral nucleus of the lateral lemniscus maintained low variability of latency over a broad range of stimulus conditions. Some neurons in the cochlear nucleus (12%) and some in the inferior colliculus (15%) had low variability in latency but only at best frequency.Range of latencies across neurons was small in the ventral cochlear nucleus (1.3–5.7 ms), intermediate in the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus (1.7–19.8 ms) and greatest in the inferior colliculus (2.9–42.0 ms).We conclude that, in the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus and in the inferior colliculus, unique tuning and timing properties are built up from ascending inputs.Abbreviations AVCN anteroventral cochlear nucleus - BF best frequency - CV coefficient of variation - DCN dorsal cochlear nucleus - FM frequency modulation - IC inferior colliculus - NLL nuclei of lateral lemniscus - PSTH post stimulus time histogram - PVCN posteroventral cochlear nucleus - SD standard deviation - SPL sound pressure level - VCN ventral cochlear nuclei - VNLLc ventral nucleus of the lateral lemniscus, columnar division  相似文献

The hypothalamus of the opossum (Didelphis virginiana), the armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus mexicanus), and the cat (Felis domestica) was studied using Del Rio Hortega's silver carbonate technique, as modified by Scharenberg ('60). This technique demonstrates astrocytes, oligodendroglia, and neuronal perikarya, but does not impregnate microglia. The morphology of macroglia was observed in ten comparable nuclei in each of the three species. The subpial and subependymal areas were also examined. Astrocytes display more cell body angularity and have more processes in most hypothalamic regions of the cat when compared to similar regions of the opossum and armadillo. In the anterior hypothalamic nucleus, the ventromedial and the dorsomedial hypothalamic nuclei, and the medial mammillary nucleus of all three species, astrocytes send processes to neurons, but neuronal and astrocytic perikarya are usually not directly contiguous. However, oligodendrocytes in a perisomatic position on neurons are a consistent feature in these nuclei. A closer relationship appears to exist between astrocytes and neurons in the neurosecretory nuclei. In the supraoptic nucleus and paraventricular nucleus of all three species a basket-like structure, designated a ?pericellular envelope”? was observed surrounding neuronal perikarya. This structure is composed of astrocytic and oligodendroglial cell bodies and processes, and is most highly developed in the cat. A dense astrocytic plexus was observed in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the cat, and in the comparable nuclei of the armadillo and opossum. The most prominent macroglial cell type of the lateral hypothalamic and lateral mammillary nuclei of all three species is the interfascicular oligodendrocyte. The posterior hypothalamic nucleus of each species has many perisomatic oligodendrocytes, and in the armadillo and cat astrocytes are closely related to the larger neurons. A subpial plexus, consisting of a palisade of small glial cells with many processes, is present in the hypothalamus of the three species. Ependymal cells have long projecting processes throughout the length of the third ventricle in the armadillo hypothalamus, but such processes are only apparent in the region of the infundibular nucleus and median eminence in the opossum and cat.  相似文献

Most studies on the relationship between measures of song behavior and the sizes of song control nuclei have focused on one or two oscine species, and often show inconsistent results. To address this issue, we first measured four variables for song complexity, i.e., song repertoire size, syllable repertoire size, the mean number of syllables per phrase (MNS) and the number of syllables in the longest phrase (NSLP), and the sizes of three song control nuclei, i.e., HVC, RA (the robust nucleus of the arcopallium), and Area X in 14 oscine species from eight families. To tackle the problem of statistical non-independence that probably existed among the closely related species, we reconstructed the phylogeny of the species studied using mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences from GenBank. By using the methods adopted in most previous reports, we tested the relationship between song complexity and the sizes of the song control nuclei. We found that: 1) the absolute sizes of RA and Area X, but not of HVC, were positively correlated to the three measures of song complexity, but that only the residual size of RA in regard to telencephalon size was significantly correlated to the song measures; 2) independent contrasts analysis showed RA and Area X to be significantly associated with NSLP. Our results indicated that the relationship between song behavior and its neural structures varied among song nuclei, suggesting that each song control nucleus may play a different role in song behavior.  相似文献

The seven currently recognized species of Geranium endemic to the Hawaiian Islands are unusual in their shrubby or arborescent habit and unlobed, parallel-veined leaves rather than the palmately cleft or lobed leaves and herbaceous habit typical of the genus. Their placement within the genus and their biogeographic source have been obscured by this morphological distictiveness and the limited resolution of relationships on the basis of morphology in the very speciose subgenus Geranium. Phylogenetic analysis of rbcL gene sequences provides strong support for the monophyly of the Hawaiian group, and indicates that the Hawaiian clade is deeply nested within section Geranium rather than comprising a separate section. The continental relatives studied to date with the greatest similarity in sequence to the Hawaiian group are native to the Americas rather than Asia or the Pacific. The Hawaiian species are extremely similar to one another in rbcL sequence, while the tree topology obtained is consistent with a basal position for Geranium arboreum within the group.  相似文献

We report four new species of monorchiids infecting teleost fishes from Australian waters. Two new species of Paralasiotocus Wee, Cutmore, Pérez-del-Olmo & Cribb, 2020, Pa. abstrusus n. sp. and Pa. tectus n. sp., are described from haemulids of the Great Barrier Reef. The two species are morphologically cryptic and occur in sympatry but differ significantly in cox1 mtDNA and ITS2 rDNA sequence data. Paralasiotocus tectus n. sp. is found only in Plectorhinchus albovittatus (Rüppell) whereas Pa. abstrusus n. sp. infects Pl. albovittatus, Plectorhinchus flavomaculatus (Cuvier) and Plectorhinchus lineatus (Linnaeus). The two species differ from all known species of Paralasiotocus in the possession of a clear gap in the spines of the terminal organ. A new species is described from a mullid, Parupeneus spilurus (Bleeker), from off Heron Island and Moreton Bay. The new species is morphologically broadly consistent with the concept of Paralasiotocus in the possession of an unspined genital atrium, bipartite terminal organ, and lobed ovary. However, it possesses a highly lobed cirrus and is phylogenetically widely separated from the two species of Paralasiotocus characterized here, and thus we propose Lobucirruatus infloresco n. g., n. sp. Proctotrema prominens n. sp., is described from Pl. albovittatus. It is differentiated from all other species of Proctotrema in the combination of a prominent metraterm, slightly fusiform body, slightly funnel-shaped oral sucker, elongate cirrus-sac, unlobed ovary, and caeca that terminate in the post-testicular region.  相似文献

Naked mole-rats (Heterocephalus glaber) are eusocial rodents that live in large subterranean colonies including a single breeding female and 1-3 breeding males; all other members of the colony, known as subordinates, are reproductively suppressed. We recently found that naked mole-rats lack many of the sex differences in the brain and spinal cord commonly found in other rodents. Instead, neural morphology is influenced by breeding status, such that breeders, regardless of sex, have more neurons than subordinates in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH), and larger overall volumes of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST), paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and medial amygdala (MeA). To begin to understand how breeding status influences brain morphology, we examined the distribution of androgen receptor (AR) immunoreactivity in gonadally intact breeders and subordinates of both sexes. All animals had AR+ nuclei in many of the same regions positive for AR in other mammals, including the VMH, BST, PVN, MeA, and the ventral portion of the premammillary nucleus (PMv). We also observed diffuse labeling throughout the preoptic area, demonstrating that distribution of the AR protein in presumptive reproductive brain nuclei is well-conserved, even in a species that exhibits remarkably little sexual dimorphism. In contrast to other rodents, however, naked mole-rats lacked AR+ nuclei in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and hippocampus. Males had more AR+ nuclei in the MeA, VMH, and PMv than did females. Surprisingly, breeders had significantly fewer AR+ nuclei than subordinates in all brain regions examined (VMH, BST, PVN, MeA, and PMv). Thus, social status is strongly correlated with AR immunoreactivity in this eusocial species.  相似文献

Summary The male germ unit ofPetunia hybrida was examined quantitatively and qualitatively at the ultrastructutral level. Three-dimensional reconstructions, the determination of nuclear and cytoplasmic volumes and surface areas, and organelle counts were obtained from serial ultrathin sections and computer analysis. In the mature pollen grain, an elongated generative cell is found in direct physical association with and partially surrounded by the vegetative nucleus. The mature generative cell lacks plastids and has mitochondria equally distributed at both of its tapering ends. In the pollen tube, the sperm cells are physically associated by cytoplasmic connections to each other and to the surrounding vegetative cell membrane. At full style length, the lobed vegetative nucleus and sperm pair are found in close association near the end of the pollen tube. The two sperms of a pair are not strongly dimorphic.  相似文献

Ascending and descending projections to the inferior colliculus in the rat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The ascending and descending projections to the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IC) were studied with the aid of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). HRP-labelled cells were found in contralateral cochlear nuclei, where the majority of different cell types was stained. Few labelled cells were observed in the ipsilateral cochlear nuclei. HRP-positive neurones were found in all nuclei of the superior olivary complex on the ipsilateral side with the exception of the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body, which was never labelled either ipsilaterally or contralaterally. The largest concentration of HRP-labelled cells was usually observed in the ipsilateral superior olivary nucleus. Smaller numbers of labelled cells were present in contralateral nuclei of the superior olivary complex. Massive projections to the inferior colliculus were found from the contralateral and ipsilateral dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and ipsilateral ventral nucleus of the lateral lemniscus. Many neurones of the central and external nuclei of the contralateral inferior colliculus were labelled with HRP. Topographic organisation of the pathways ascending to the colliculus was expressed in the cochlear nuclei, lateral superior olivary nucleus and in the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus. HRP--positive cells were found in layer V of the ipsilateral auditory cortex, however, the evidence for topographic organisation was lacking.  相似文献

The cochlear nuclear complex was investigated in snakes of the advanced family Colubridae and the primitive family Boidae. This study was undertaken in an attempt to correlate the elaboration of the cochlear nuclei with behavior and phylogeny and to elucidate the relative effects of these factors on the evolution of the cochlear nuclear complex. Fifty-five brains, of 14 colubrid species and three boid species, were examined to collect data on neuron diameter, neuron population, nuclear volume, and neuronal density of the cochlear nuclear complex and of its component nuclei (nucleus angularis and nucleus magnocellularis). Intraspecific and interspecific comparisons of the data were performed by nested analysis of variance. The species were grouped by cluster analysis and ranked on the basis of the morphometric parameters. Interspecific comparisons indicate that the elaboration of the cochlear nuclei is related, first, to prey preference and, second, to habitat preference. The most elaborate cochlear nuclei occur in species with a preference for vertebrate prey. Burrowing species that prey on vertebrates exhibit the highest degree of elaboration of the cochlear nuclei. In some burrowing species, the nucleus magnocellularis is differentiated into medial and lateral subdivisions. The primitive boid snakes show greater elaboration of the cochlear nuclei than do most of the advanced colubrid snakes. The elaboration of the cochlear nuclear complex in snakes seems to reflect the influence of both behavior and phylogeny. Further investigation of primitive snakes of varied behaviors is needed to establish more clearly the influence of phylogeny on the evolution of the cochlear nuclear complex.  相似文献

The expression patterns of Tac2 and NK3 mRNA and of pep2, the neurokinin B (NKB) precursor protein, were compared in rats and mice. Pep2 immunoreactivity was observed in fibers, terminals, and perikarya in the brains of both species, but the number of NKB-immunoreactive cells was generally smaller in mice than in the corresponding nuclei in rats. Congruent distribution patterns of Tac2 mRNA and NKB were found in many nuclei of the thalamus and hypothalamus (habenula, anterodorsal nucleus, preoptic area, arcuate nucleus, paraventricular nucleus). However, mice expressed Tac2 mRNA neither in the hippocampus nor in the nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract, in contrast to rats. Accordingly, mice showed no NKB in the projection areas of these nuclei, such as the olfactory tubercle, whereas a clear NKB signal was present in rat tissues. Surprisingly, we found nearly identical NK3 mRNA expression patterns in both species, despite the species differences in NKB expression. Thus, although the expression patterns of Tac2 and NKB are similar in rats and mice, noteworthy differences exist. Our results have important implications for the interpretation of behavioral results concerning the NKB/NK3 system in these species.
