Hypoglycemia is a frequently encountered complication in falciparum malaria that is usually ascribed to increased glucose use and impaired glucose production caused by the inhibition of gluconeogenesis. Here, in light of recent data showing that glucose production and gluconeogenesis are often increased in falciparum malaria, we review the causes and the risk factors leading to hypoglycemia in malaria. Fasting emerges as an important potential risk factor. Length of fasting should be included in studies on hypoglycemia in malaria. Full recognition of this risk factor for hypoglycemia in malaria could change both advice to the population, especially mothers, and treatment guidelines in the health sector.  相似文献

Plant morphogenesis has some interesting features that may have consequences for the regulation of cell division. In particular, the immobility of plant cells implies the necessity for highly accurate controls, in contrast with the flexibility of many developmental processes in animals. An important question in plant development concerns the status of the relationship between plant morphogenesis and cell division. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge of the molecular mechanisms controlling the plant cell cycle and how this could be differentially regulated during plant morphogenesis. The plant genes involved are homologous to those of other higher eukaryotes, suggesting a similar cell cycle machinery. A variety of mechanisms control these genes, reflecting the complexity of internal and environmental signals to which plants should respond. This intricate network requires an upstream control mechanism to function as a failsafe system and to govern cell division and growth to produce the correct plant shape. The large GTPase dynamin is strongly accumulated in the constricted area including midzonal microtubules of dividing cells. The proline-rich domain (PRD) of dynamin has been considered as a microtubule-binding domain. However, it remains unclear how PRD controls dynamin-microtubule interaction in mitotic cells. Here, we found that the microtubule-binding activity of PRD is low in dynamin-2. One of the mitosis-specific kinase activities to PRD in HeLa cells was identified as cyclin B-Cdc2 kinase. The kinase phosphorylated PRD at Ser(764) and/or Thr(766) and reduced the microtubule-binding activity of PRD. These results suggest that phosphorylation of PRD by cyclin B-Cdc2 kinase plays an important role to control dynamin-2-microtubule interaction in mitotic HeLa cells.  相似文献

Microsurgery is one of the highly interesting surgical procedures that can be performed using different applications and in different specialties, including plastic surgery. The endoscope is a popular instrument used in many fields, including plastic surgery. Although the operating microscope is still a must for microsurgical performance, microsurgery could be performed, depending on the experiences and facilities, by using other visual-assisting equipment. From this point of view, the authors tried to find less costly and more widespread equipment suitable for performing microsurgery that can, furthermore, be applied in special situations and indications, such as operating in an optical cavity. The authors investigated this issue with the endoscope. In this experimental project, the authors performed vascular microsurgical anastomoses of the rats' femoral vessels to create an optical cavity in a prefabricated skin retraction model in the groin area of 10 Sprague-Dawley male rats. The microsurgical anastomoses of the femoral vessels and nerves were performed easily in a reasonable time, without recorded difficulties, and with maximum physical and visual comfort for the surgeon. The authors spent a mean time of 28.1, 27.3, and 19.2 minutes for the arterial, venous, and neural anastomoses, respectively. In this group of animals, 90 percent vascular patency and 100 percent accurate neural anastomoses were recorded. The advantage the authors noted was that this new technique of operating in the field of microsurgery, with its feasibility and difficulties, would be a point of research and application for the young generations of microsurgeons.  相似文献

Alterations in total body sodium (TBSodium) that covered the range from moderate deficit to large surplus were induced by 10 experimental protocols in 66 dogs to study whether large amounts of Na+ are stored in an osmotically inactive form during Na+ retention. Changes in TBSodium, total body potassium (TBPotassium), and total body water (TBWater) were determined by 4-day balance studies. A rather close correlation was found between individual changes in TBSodium and those in TBWater (r2 = 0.83). Changes in TBSodium were often accompanied by changes in TBPotassium. Taking changes of both TBSodium and TBPotassium into account, the correlation with TBWater changes became very close (r2 = 0.93). The sum of changes in TBSodium and TBPotassium was accompanied by osmotically adequate TBWater changes, and plasma osmolality remained unchanged. Calculations reveal that even moderate TBSodium changes often included substantial Na+/K+ exchanges between extracellular and cellular space. The results support the theory that osmocontrol effectively adjusts TBWater to the body's present content of the major cations, Na+ and K+, and do not support the notion that, during Na+ retention, large portions of Na+ are stored in an osmotically inactive form. Furthermore, the finding that TBSodium changes are often accompanied by TBPotassium changes and also include Na+/K+ redistributions between fluid compartments suggests that cells may serve as readily available Na+ store. This Na+ storage, however, is osmotically active, since osmotical equilibration is achieved by opposite redistribution of K+.  相似文献

The aims of this study were: 1) To determine the effects of a 12-week recreational soccer training programme and continuous endurance running on body composition of young adult men and 2) to determine which of these two programmes was more effective concerning body composition. Sixty-four participants completed the randomized controlled trial and were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a soccer training group (SOC; n=20), a running group (RUN; n=21) or a control group performing no physical training (CON; n=23). Training programmes for SOC and RUN lasted 12-week with 3 training sessions per week. Soccer sessions consisted of 60 min ordinary five-a-side, six-a-side or seven-a-side matches on a 30-45 m wide and 45-60 m long plastic grass pitch. Running sessions consisted of 60 min of continuous moderate intensity running at the same average heart rate as in SOC (~80% HRmax). All participants, regardless of group assignment, were tested for each of the following dependent variables: body weight, body height, body mass index, percent body fat, body fat mass, fat-free mass and total body water. In the SOC and RUN groups there was a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in body composition parameters from pre- to post-training values for all measures with the exception of fat-free mass and total body water. Body mass index, percent body fat and body fat mass did not differ between groups at baseline, but by week 12 were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the SOC and RUN groups compared to CON. To conclude, recreational soccer training provides at least the same changes in body composition parameters as continuous running in young adult men when the training intensity is well matched.  相似文献

We investigated the impact of inundative releases of the parasitoid, Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), for control of greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), on cut gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii L.) under controlled greenhouse conditions. Experimental units consisted of ten plants covered and separated from other units by gauze tents. We assessed three release rates of the aphelinid parasitoid: a 7-week experiment with a standard release rate (10 m−2/14 days), and a subsequent 3-month trial with high (100 m−2/week) and very high (1,000 m−2/week) release rates. Experimental units without release of parasitoids served as control treatment. Gerbera plants were infested initially with 50–100 juvenile and 50–70 adult whiteflies in the first experiment, and in the second experiment with less than 50 juveniles per plant and 50–70 adults. Whitefly and parasitoid population density were assessed in weekly intervals using infestation and activity categories. Results show that parasitized whiteflies were present in all treatments within 2 weeks after initial release. Unfortunately, it was not possible to control whiteflies with standard release rates of E. formosa. Although parasitism rates slightly increased, the effect on whitefly populations was negligible. Large amounts of honeydew and growth of sooty mold fungi caused the termination of the first experiment. In a second experiment, E. formosa was tested at 10–100 times higher release densities. In contrast to the first experiment, whitefly densities increased steadily during the first 8 weeks, but remained constant until the end of the experiment in both treatments. Parasitism by E. formosa reached its maximum after 8 weeks. We discuss possible reasons for the low efficiency of E. formosa as a whitefly antagonist in greenhouse production of gerbera.  相似文献

The goal of this study was describing the temporal evolution of Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) contact prevalence among Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations under different management regimes and contact likelihoods with domestic pigs. Given the recent increase in wild boar abundance throughout Europe, we hypothesized that wild boar contact with ADV would remain stable in time even after significant reduction of ADV prevalence in domestic pigs.  相似文献

We compare adult and intact neonatal pelves, using a pelvic sagittal variable, the angle of sacral incidence, which presents significant correlations with vertebral curvature in adults and plays an important role in sagittal balance of the trunk on the lower limbs. Since lumbar curvature develops in children in association with gait acquisition, we expect a change in this angle during growth, which could contribute to the acquisition of sagittal balance. To understand the mechanisms underlying sagittal balance in the evolution of human bipedalism, we also measure the angle of incidence in hominid fossils.  相似文献

Florigen is a mobile signal released by the leaves that reaching the shoot apical meristem (SAM), changes its developmental program from vegetative to reproductive. The protein FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) constitutes an important element of the florigen, but other components such as sugars, have been also proposed to be part of this signal.1-5 We have studied the accumulation and composition of starch during the floral transition in Arabidopsis thaliana in order to understand the role of carbon mobilization in this process. In A. thaliana and Antirrhinum majus the gene coding for the Granule-Bound Starch Synthase (GBSS) is regulated by the circadian clock6,7 while in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii the homolog gene CrGBSS is controlled by photoperiod and circadian signals.8,9 In a recent paper10 we described the role of the central photoperiodic factor CONSTANS (CO) in the regulation of GBSS expression in Arabidopsis. This regulation is in the basis of the change in the balance between starch and free sugars observed during the floral transition. We propose that this regulation may contribute to the florigenic signal and to the increase in sugar transport required during the flowering process.  相似文献

  • Positive sap pressures are produced in the xylem of birch trees in boreal conditions during the time between the thawing of the soil and bud break. During this period, xylem embolisms accumulated during wintertime are refilled with water. The mechanism for xylem sap pressurization and its environmental drivers are not well known.
  • We measured xylem sap flow, xylem sap pressure, xylem sap osmotic concentration, xylem and whole stem diameter changes, and stem and root non‐structural carbohydrate concentrations, along with meteorological conditions at two sites in Finland during and after the sap pressurisation period.
  • The diurnal dynamics of xylem sap pressure and sap flow during the sap pressurisation period varied, but were more often opposite to the diurnal pattern after bud burst, i.e. sap pressure increased and sap flow rate mostly decreased when temperature increased. Net conversion of soluble sugars to starch in the stem and roots occurred during the sap pressurisation period. Xylem sap osmotic pressure was small in comparison to total sap pressure, and it did not follow changes in environmental conditions or tree water relations.
  • Based on these findings, we suggest that xylem sap pressurisation and embolism refilling occur gradually over a few weeks through water transfer from parenchyma cells to xylem vessels during daytime, and then the parenchyma are refilled mostly during nighttime by water uptake from soil. Possible drivers for water transfer from parenchyma cells to vessels are discussed. Also the functioning of thermal dissipation probes in conditions of changing stem water content is discussed.

A massive neutrophil influx in the intestine is the histopathological hallmark of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium-induced enterocolitis in humans. Two major hypotheses on the mechanism leading to neutrophil infiltration in the intestinal mucosa have emerged. One hypothesis suggests that S. enterica serovar Typhimurium takes an active role in triggering this host response by injecting proteins, termed effectors, into the host cell cytosol which induce a proinflammatory gene expression profile in the intestinal epithelium. The second hypothesis suggests a more passive role for the pathogen by proposing that bacterial invasion stimulates the innate pathways of inflammation because the pathogen-associated molecular patterns of S. enterica serovar Typhimurium are recognized by pathogen recognition receptors on cells in the lamina propria. A review of the current literature reveals that, while pathogen recognition receptors are clearly involved in eliciting neutrophil influx during S. enterica serovar Typhimurium infection, a direct contribution of effectors in triggering proinflammatory host cell responses cannot currently be ruled out.  相似文献

Man and Stormo and Bulyk et al. recently presented their results on the study of the DNA binding affinity of proteins. In both of these studies the main conclusion is that the additivity assumption, usually applied in methods to search for binding sites, is not true. In the first study, the analysis of binding affinity data from the Mnt repressor protein bound to all possible DNA (sub)targets at positions 16 and 17 of the binding site, showed that those positions are not independent. In the second study, the authors analysed DNA binding affinity data of the wild-type mouse EGR1 protein and four variants differing on the middle finger. The binding affinity of these proteins was measured to all 64 possible trinucleotide (sub)targets of the middle finger using microarray technology. The analysis of the measurements also showed interdependence among the positions in the DNA target. In the present report, we review the data of both studies and we re- analyse them using various statistical methods, including a comparison with a multiple regression approach. We conclude that despite the fact that the additivity assumption does not fit the data perfectly, in most cases it provides a very good approximation of the true nature of the specific protein–DNA interactions. Therefore, additive models can be very useful for the discovery and prediction of binding sites in genomic DNA.  相似文献

Hyalopomatus cancerum n.sp., epizoic onspider-crabs (Encephaloides) in a low-oxygenarea of the Arabian Sea, differs from other species ofthe genus in lacking opercula.Larger serpulids in Indian Ocean Galathea samplesfrom great depths, tentatively referred to Protissimplex Ehlers, mostly bear vesicles on tips ofpinnulate radioles. These are too small to occlude thetube mouth, so perhaps they and the largervascularised vesicles of Apomatus may help inrespiration. The BIOFAR Survey off the Faroe Islandsshowed that Protula (always non-operculate) andApomatus are the main serpulid genera in thedeeper channels. Protis, Protula and Apomatus, which are amongst the best-known ofdeep-sea serpulids, are like early postlarval stagesof Serpula and Hydroides in lackingopercula, or in having thin-walled opercular vesicleson pinnulate stalks. They thus support the view thathypomorphy is somewhat characteristic of abyssal taxa.Considering non-operculate serpulids of shallow seas,many species of Spiraserpula lack opercula, butsecrete sharp ridges and spines on the inner walls oftheir tubes, which must deter or trap predatorytube-invaders; Floriprotis may be protected bycoral, whilst Salmacina, Paraprotula, Microprotula and Paraprotis dendrova Uchidaincubate their embryos, so have special respiratoryneeds.  相似文献

In the present work, we provide compelling evidence for the expression of a ghrelin-like peptide hormone that has only been associated with animals, in various plant tissues. Ghrelin, the appetite stimulating hormone, has been identified from a number of different species including humans, rat, pig, mouse, gerbil, eel, goldfish, bullfrog and chicken. The study here was conducted using an immunohistochemistry assay to screen whether plants have any ghrelin immunoreactivity. In this respect, Prunus x domestica L. and Marus alba were examined. Immunohistochemistry results showed that there is a strong human ghrelin immunoreactivity substance in the parenchyma cells of these plants. This was entirely unexpected since this hormone was considered to be present solely in animals. Thus, this study is the first to report the presence of a peptide with ghrelin-like activity in plants, a finding that has only been observed in the animal kingdom. RIA analysis confirmed that these plants contain significant amounts of this substance. Furthermore, reverse-phase HPLC analyses of plant extracts showed an elution characteristic of the peptide identical to that of human ghrelin. In general, fruit from both plants had higher levels of the peptide than the vegetative parts.  相似文献
