The distribution and geometry of the dendritic trees of spinal motoneurons obey several well-established rules. Some of these rules are based on systematic relationships between quantitative geometrical features (e.g. total dendritic length) and the three-dimensional trajectory followed by dendrites from their origin to their termination. Since dendritic geometry partially determines the transmission of current and voltage signals generated by synapses on the dendritic tree, our goal was to compare the efficacy of signal transmission by dendritic trajectories that followed different directions. To achieve this goal, we constructed detailed compartmental models of the dendritic trees of intracellularly stained neck motoneurons and calculated the electrotonic properties of each soma-to-terminal trajectory. These properties displayed a high degree of variability. To determine if this variability was due, in part, to the orientation (e.g. rostral, rostral-dorsal-lateral) of the trajectory, each trajectory was classified according to its orientation. The attenuation of current and voltage signals en route to the soma were strongly related to trajectory orientation. Trajectories with similar attenuation factors formed functional subunits that were arranged in distinct domains within the ventral horn. The difference in the efficacy of signal transmission between subunits was increased by activation of neighbouring synapses due to trajectory-related differences in non-linear summation. These results indicate that the input-output properties of motoneurons depend on the direction of the path taken by dendrites from their origin at the cell body to their terminals. 相似文献

Studies of patients with insulin-dependent diabetes and their families have shown increased incidences of HLA markers B8, B15, DR3 and DR4. While these genetic predispositions are obviously important, additional factors such as environmental influences are presumed to trigger the events leading to the development of diabetes. Infectious triggers, in particular several viruses, have been suggested. The evidence from epidemiological and in vitro studies for a viral aetiology is summarized here. The significance of the recent finding of an increased proportion of non-secretors among patients with insulin-dependent diabetes is discussed in the context of other 'autoimmune' diseases for which infectious aetiologies have been proposed. 相似文献

Predators can impose both selection and life-history shifts in prey populations. Because both processes may affect phenotypic
distributions, the estimates of selection differentials may be biased. We carried out two field experiments to disentangle
these separate effects. We studied whether dragonfly predation by Aeshna cyanea changes the distributions in body size and
lamellae morphology in the damselfly Lestes sponsa. Damselflies have caudal lamellae which are used in escapes by swimming.
In a first experiment, we manipulated predator presence (No Aeshna, Encaged Aeshna or Free-ranging Aeshna) and stopped the
experiment when all larvae had moulted once. In a second experiment, larvae were confronted with a Free-ranging Aeshna but
collected before moulting, and survivors were compared with a control sample taken at the start of the experiment. The presence
of Aeshna largely reduced the survival probabilities of the Lestes larvae at a very similar rate in both experiments. Daily
survival probabilities did not differ between the No Aeshna and Encaged Aeshna treatments. In the Free-ranging Aeshna treatment
of the first experiment, size was reduced compared to the other two treatments, creating a significant apparent selection
differential. This was probably mainly due to predator-induced reduced growth because in the second experiment, where growth
effects were excluded, size of the survivors did not differ from the control sample. In both experiments there was a significant
selection pressure for larger lamellae. Standardized directional selection differentials were similar in both experiments
(0.57 and 0.28 phenotypic standard deviation units). No survival selection on lamellae shape was detected. These results are
in agreement with previous findings that lamellae size, but not lamellae shape, enhances swimming performance and thereby
predator escape in this species.

Fig choice by the pollinator of a gynodioecious fig: selection to rush,or intersexual mimicry? 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Due to selection to maximise the benefits accrued, conflicts of interest exist between mutualists. An extreme conflict occurs between gynodioecious fig trees and their pollinating wasps. Female wasps, which are required for pollination, cannot reproduce in female figs and should be selected to avoid them. We investigate fig choice in Liporrhopalum tentacularis , pollinator of Ficus montana . We show that entry rates are independent of fig sex and diameter, with wasps instead entering the first fig encountered (although significant between-tree differences in entry rates to figs were observed). This suggests that wasps are unable to discriminate between the sexes because of selection for inter-sexual fig mimicry. In conjuction with data on other species pairs, these findings imply that that the resolution of the conflict is ultimately under the tree's control, with the level of mimicry evolving in response to both the propensity of wasps to discriminate and the costs of them doing so. 相似文献

Purine nucleotides function in a variety of vital cellular and metabolic processes including energy production, cell signaling, synthesis of vitamin-derived cofactors and nucleic acids, and as determinants of cell fate. Unlike their mammalian and insect hosts, Leishmania cannot synthesize the purine ring de novo and are absolutely dependent upon them to meet their purine requirements. The obligatory nature of purine salvage in these parasites, therefore, offers an attractive paradigm for drug targeting and, consequently, the delineation of the pathway has been under scientific investigation for over 30 years. Here, we review recent developments that reveal how purines flux in Leishmania and offer a potential 'Achilles' heel' for future validation. 相似文献

The mammalian mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) is a small double-stranded DNA molecule that is exclusively transmitted down the maternal line. Pathogenic mtDNA mutations are usually heteroplasmic, with a mixture of mutant and wild-type mtDNA within the same organism. A woman harbouring one of these mutations transmits a variable amount of mutant mtDNA to each offspring. This can result in a healthy child or an infant with a devastating and fatal neurological disorder. Understanding the biological basis of this uncertainty is one of the principal challenges facing scientists and clinicians in the field of mitochondrial genetics. 相似文献

With the advent of new technologies, animal locations are being collected at ever finer spatio-temporal scales. We review analytical methods for dealing with correlated data in the context of resource selection, including post hoc variance inflation techniques, ‘two-stage’ approaches based on models fit to each individual, generalized estimating equations and hierarchical mixed-effects models. These methods are applicable to a wide range of correlated data problems, but can be difficult to apply and remain especially challenging for use–availability sampling designs because the correlation structure for combinations of used and available points are not likely to follow common parametric forms. We also review emerging approaches to studying habitat selection that use fine-scale temporal data to arrive at biologically based definitions of available habitat, while naturally accounting for autocorrelation by modelling animal movement between telemetry locations. Sophisticated analyses that explicitly model correlation rather than consider it a nuisance, like mixed effects and state-space models, offer potentially novel insights into the process of resource selection, but additional work is needed to make them more generally applicable to large datasets based on the use–availability designs. Until then, variance inflation techniques and two-stage approaches should offer pragmatic and flexible approaches to modelling correlated data. 相似文献

In the past two years, new data on conceptual aspects of the evolution of eukaryotic genome size have appeared, including the adaptivity of genome enlargement, the mechanisms of genome size change and the relation of genome size to organismal complexity. New data on the hypotheses of "selfish DNA" and "mutational equilibrium" have been recently obtained. A relationship is emerging between the intragenomic distribution of noncoding DNA and differential gene expression, which suggests that noncoding DNA is involved in epigenetic organization of the genome and organismal complexity. The standpoint of dynamical chaos, which integrates multilevel selection and mutation biases, may provide a framework for studying the evolution of genome size. 相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in snake tail length: sexual selection, natural selection,or morphological constraint? 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

Male snakes typically have longer tails relative to body length than females, but the extent of this dimorphism varies among species. Three hypotheses have been suggested to explain tail dimorphism. The Morphological Constraint Hypothesis proposes that males have relatively longer tails to accommodate hemipenes and retractor muscles. The Female Reproductive Output Hypothesis proposes that females have relatively shorter tails as a secondary result of natural selection for increased reproductive capacity. The Male Mating Ability Hypothesis proposes that sexual selection favours relatively longer tails in males during courtship. These hypotheses make different predictions about the relationships among tail length, body size, male reproductive morphology, female reproductive output, mode of reproduction, and male mating behaviour among and within taxa. Predictions were tested using published data for 56 genera in the family Colubridae and original data for the water snake, Nerodia sipedon. Tail length dimorphism was more male-biased in tam having relatively short tails (r=–0.52, P < 0.001), hemipenes and retractor muscles occupied a greater proportion of the tail in taxa having relatively short tails (r=– 0.71, P < 0.00l and r=– 0.66, P = 0.001, respectively), and tail length dimorphism was more male-biased in taxa in which body size dimorphism was more female-biased (r=– 0.60, P < 0.001). These results support both the Morphological Constraint Hypotheses and the Female Reproductive Output Hypothesis. However, tests of other predictions, including those regarding patterns within N. sipedon , failed to support any of the three hypotheses. Comparisons among taxa suggest several species in which further tests of these hypotheses would be especially appropriate. 相似文献

The impact of anthropogenic disturbance on the fitness of prey should depend on the relative effect of human activities on different trophic levels. This verification remains rare, however, especially for large animals. We investigated the functional link between habitat selection of female caribou (Rangifer tarandus) and the survival of their calves, a fitness correlate. This top-down controlled population of the threatened forest-dwelling caribou inhabits a managed forest occupied by wolves (Canis lupus) and black bears (Ursus americanus). Sixty-one per cent of calves died from bear predation within two months following their birth. Variation in habitat selection tactics among mothers resulted in different mortality risks for their calves. When calves occupied areas with few deciduous trees, they were more likely to die from predation if the local road density was high. Although caribou are typically associated with pristine forests, females selected recent cutovers without negative impact on calf survival. This selection became detrimental, however, as regeneration took place in harvested stands owing to increased bear predation. We demonstrate that human disturbance has asymmetrical consequences on the trophic levels of a food web involving multiple large mammals, which resulted in habitat selection tactics with a greater short-term fitness payoff and, therefore, with higher evolutionary opportunity. 相似文献

Males of the midge Chironomus plumosus fly solely to mate. They maintain station for long periods in moving air. Females patrol in search of males and, after receiving a spermatophore, fly to oviposition sites. The requirements of flight in males and females are therefore fundamentally different. Females are larger than males, on average, so these differences could stem from scaling rules governing the geometry of space. The same explanation might apply to flight differences within the sexes and even to peculiarities of flight architecture in C. plumosus compared to other flying animals. In other words, might flight design be accounted for entirely by mechanical constraints without recourse to natural selection?
To test this hypothesis, the power output of C. plumosu was measured as size-specific muscle mass. Contrary to expectation, little evidence was found of scaling effects in this measure of power. Despite its being among the smallest of animals to fly, C. plumosus turns out to have the largest mass of flight muscle, relative to body size, yet found among animals. Differences both between C. plumosus and other species and within C. plumosus are, in general, more readily accounted for by the requirements of the mating system within the viscous universe encountered by small flying animals. We conclude that it is natural selection rather than mechanical constraint that is the primary influence determining the architecture of flight in this small animal. 相似文献

Mammalian sex chromosomes evolved (and are still evolving) from a homomorphic pair by the progressive loss of active genes from the Y chromosome. Among the changes that have accompanied this differentiation, it is difficult to determine causes, effects and correlates. Comparative studies suggest that the choice of a gene, and thus a chromosome pair, to control the sex-determining pathway may be quite arbitrary, and that sex chromosomes and sex-determining genes are more likely to be the products of random changes than the products of selection for function. 相似文献

The Dispersal Syndrome hypothesis remains contentious, stating that apparently nonrandom associations of fruit characteristics result from selection by seed dispersers. We examine a key assumption under this hypothesis, i.e. that fruit traits can be used as reliable signals by frugivores. We first test this assumption by looking at whether fruit colour allows birds and primates to distinguish between fruits commonly dispersed by birds or primates. Second, we test whether the colours of fruits dispersed by primates are more contrasting to primates than the colours of bird‐dispersed fruits, expected if fruit colour is an adaptation to facilitate the detection by seed dispersers. Third, we test whether fruit colour has converged in unrelated plant species dispersed by similar frugivores. We use vision models based on peak sensitivities of birds’ and primates’ cone cells. We base our analyses on the visual systems of two types of birds (violet and ultraviolet based) and three types of primates (trichromatic primates from the Old and the New Worlds, and a dichromatic New World monkey). Using a Discriminant Function Analysis, we find that all frugivore groups can reliably discriminate between bird‐ and primate‐dispersed fruits. Fruit colour can be a reliable signal to different seed dispersers. However, the colours of primate‐dispersed fruits are less contrasting to primates than those of bird‐dispersed fruits. Fruit colour convergence in unrelated plants is independent of phylogeny and can be better explained by disperser type, which supports the hypothesis that frugivores are important in fruit evolution. We discuss adaptive and nonadaptive hypotheses that can potentially explain the pattern we found. 相似文献

Latitude-correlated polymorphisms can be due to either selection-driven evolution or gene flow. To discriminate between them, we propose an approach that studies subpopulations springing from a single population that have lived for generations at different latitudes and have had a low genetic admixture. These requirements are fulfilled to a large extent by Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews. The original population lived at a latitude of 35 degrees N, where the Sephardis still live. The Ashkenazis, however, moved to a latitude of 50 degrees N, starting about 10 centuries ago. The present study examines 3 latitude-correlated polymorphisms: PGP, PGM1, and AHSG. We found that PGP*2 and AHSG*2 alleles most likely underwent selection-driven evolution, but that PGM1*ts allele was not similarly affected. Since temperature might have been considered a reasonable selective factor, we also studied a population living at >800 m above sea level from Aosta Valley (Italy). 相似文献
