Exposed mollusc shells may act as benthic islands in soft bottoms, and the analysis of their encrusting faunas provides unique palaeoecological information. In the late Valanginian of the Agrio Formation (Neuquén Basin, west‐central Argentina), the large pectinid Prohinnites acted as a benthic island on soft substrates. Inequivalved Prohinnites adults with small, smooth cementing scars on the right valve suggest that a free reclining life habit followed the epibyssate juvenile and cementing phases. The encrusting fauna on Prohinnites was studied taxonomically and palaeoecologically by means of a quantitative approach. Over 90% of 123 valves presented encrusters. Encrustation was equally common in both valves. Internal encrustation was rare. The left umbonal region was less encrusted probably due to sediment accumulation or early colonization by soft‐bodied taxa. The fauna was composed of 14 encrusting taxa, including oysters, serpulids, sabellids and cyclostome bryozoans. Oysters exceeded 50% of the total abundance, but serpulids and bryozoans were more diverse. Serpulids and particularly oysters showed a gregarious life habit. Few interactions took place among encrusters and most were post‐mortem, involving the overgrowth of already dead oysters. The oysters were early settlers that took advantage of their gregarious behaviour to rapidly cover available hard surfaces. However, they were unable to exclude bryozoans and polychaetes, which settled on the pectinid's valves regardless of the presence of oysters. The studied fauna corresponds to a climax community that was structured by larval abundance rather than by competitive interactions; oysters settled first and replenished themselves while polychaetes and bryozoans settled over or alongside them  相似文献

Nerineoid shell beds are described for the first time from Lower Cretaceous deposits of southern South America. These come from carbonates near the top of the Agrio Formation in southern Mendoza Province, west‐central Argentina. To envisage the origin of the nerineoid shell beds, a taphonomic study was carried out, which indicated that these represent within‐habitat time‐averaged, primary sedimentological concentrations with a secondary biogenic imprint related to a relatively high local production of nerineoid shells. The associated palaeoenvironments were studied through a facies analysis of the carbonate succession including the shell beds. The carbonates were deposited in a homoclinal ramp system and depict a shallowing upward trend from mid to inner ramp. The individuals lived and accumulated in oolitic shoals within the inner ramp, in a shallow, well‐lit, high‐energy setting above fair‐weather wave base. Substrate was oxygenated and loose. The nerineoids are shown to belong to one species of the genus Eunerinea, and through the functional morphology of the shells they are tentatively interpreted as infaunal or semi‐infaunal. It is suggested that the recorded monospecific nerineoid shell beds indicate that the palaeoenvironmental conditions may have been favourable for the development of abundant populations of these gastropods in the northern part of the Neuquén Basin during a short time interval in the Hauterivian–Barremian boundary. This could have been related to a brief warming episode, but other factors may have also been involved. □Argentina, Early Cretaceous, Gastropods, nerineoids, Neuquén Basin, shell beds, taphonomy.  相似文献

Abstract: Two species of decapod crustacean are recorded from the Agua de la Mula Member of the Agrio Formation (Upper Hauterivian – Lower Barremian) of the Neuquén Basin of west‐central Argentina, namely Astacodes falcifer Bell and a new species of Palaeohomarus, P. pacificus. The preservation of the specimens is exceptional, some showing delicate compound eyes and a stridulatory apparatus, features rarely found in fossil forms. Many specimens are preserved articulated inside calcareous nodules, within dark‐grey shales. The lobster‐bearing sediments accumulated in a low‐energy marine environment and diagenetic mineralization occurred very rapidly, prior to significant decay, thus allowing exceptional preservation of specimens. Palaeohomarus was a rare genus in the Cretaceous with a palaeogeographic distribution restricted to the Mediterranean Tethys, the eastern USA and Madagascar, while Astacodes falcifer has been recorded only from Speeton (eastern England) and Neuquén.  相似文献

Trigoniide clams were conspicuous components of bivalve faunas in shallow seas during most of the Mesozoic. Morphological trends in different features of shell shape and ornamentation of three related species of myophorelloids from the Agrio Formation (Early Cretaceous of Neuquén Basin, Argentina) that inhabited environments of different hydrodynamic energy conditions are explored in this study by means of a detailed morphometric analysis. Four hydrodynamic energy categories were established for depositional environments, from most (1), to least (4), energetic. General shell shape was characterized by measurements of height, length and width. New quantitative methods were developed to evaluate the distribution of costae along the marginal carina and the divergence of costae along the flank. Morphometric variables were detrended with respect to size, to avoid ontogenetic variability in further analyses. Relative width of the shell increases as environments become higher in hydrodynamic energy; this unusual trend may be interpreted as an anchoring/stabilizing strategy developed by the lineage in shallow marine environments. Trends in ornamentation correspond to more densely distributed costae in environments of higher hydrodynamic energy, a pattern that improves substrate penetration.  相似文献

Cichowolski, M., Pazos, P.J., Tunik, M.A. & Aguirre‐Urreta, M.B. 2011: An exceptional storm accumulation of nautilids in the Lower Cretaceous of the Neuquén Basin, Argentina. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 121–138. An exceptional accumulation of nautilid shells of the species Cymatoceras perstriatum (Steuer) is reported and described in the Lower Cretaceous Agrio Formation of the Neuquén Basin (west‐central Argentina). The bed represents a storm deposit in a shallow‐water environment within the mid‐ramp. The evidences of a storm‐related origin of the bed come from the petrographic analysis and taphonomic features of the shells, specially the sedimentary infill pattern. The shells are dispersed in patches within the stratum, without any orientation relative to the bedding plane. It is proposed that the shells were floating after the death of the animals, although most of them have an almost complete living chamber. The presence of some heavily encrusted shells suggests that there is a mixing of specimens with different drift times. A variety of factors related to the origin of such high number of nautilid shells are discussed, including a transgressive stand system tract, the possible existence of a gregarious behaviour, changes in salinity and wind directions. □Lower Cretaceous, Nautilids, Neuquén Basin, shell accumulation, storm deposit.  相似文献

The Neuquén Basin is a stratigraphically- and economically-important Early Cretaceous depocentre located in west-central Argentina. The Early Valanginian to Early Barremian succession (upper Vaca Muerta, Mulichinco and Agrio Formations) contains a rich fossil record, with abundant bivalves and ammonoids. Palaeosalinities are determined systematically throughout the succession, based on an oxygen isotope analysis of unaltered oyster shells from two localities in Neuquén province. A total of 188 oyster samples from 52 stratigraphic levels were processed. A total of 52 mean values of δ18O isotope are used to calculate palaeosalinities, assuming an estimated water temperature of 25 °C. The observed range of palaeosalinities, between the maximum and the minimum, is 19, which is in conflict with published accounts of this being a fully marine succession. The isotopic data are combined with independent faunal evidence to evaluate palaeosalinity variation both laterally and temporally. Significant fluctuations in water salinity are indicated, with a clear tendency to increase from brachyhaline to euhaline and near hyperhaline conditions through time. The fluctuations were probably due to dilution from normal marine water, caused primarily by variations in rainfall and continental runoff. In addition, the presence of a volcanic island arc along the western margin of the basin may have at least partially isolated the basin from the marine waters of the Pacific Ocean. Also, a gulf-shaped basin may have inhibited hydrodynamic exchange with the ocean while enhancing retention of continental waters.  相似文献

de la Fuente M.S. & Fernández, M.S. 2010: An unusual pattern of limb morphology in the Tithonian marine turtle Neusticemys neuquina from the Vaca Muerta Formation, Neuquén Basin, Argentina. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 15–25. Here, we report an unusual pattern in the manus and pes morphology of the Tithonian marine turtle Neusticemys neuquina. We analyse the forelimbs of two previously known specimens and describe the hind limbs of two previously undescribed specimens. Neusticemys neuquina is characterized by a relative elongation of both the forelimb and hind limb, compared with stem Chelonoidea, as well as an elongation of the pedal digit V, achieved through the elongation of the bones, as well as a moderate hyperphalangy. The elongation of pedal digit V is the most striking feature of N. neuquina, a feature unknown in other turtles. □Limb morphology, Neusticemys neuquina, Tithonian turtle.  相似文献

The shallow carbonate facies at the top of the Yacoraite Formation (Late Cretaceous–Early Palaeocene) in the Metán sub‐basin, Salta Basin (Cretaceous‐Eocene), northern Argentina, have domal stromatolitic boundstones with peculiar cavities, interpreted here as bioclaustrations. The cavities appear to have been produced by organisms that lived within the microbial mat contemporarily with its growth, producing a distinctive ichnofabric. This is the oldest reported record of bioclaustrations in stromatolites, and the first in shallow marine environments. The interpretation of the facies suggests a stressed shallow, restricted setting with variations in salinity, represented by an intertidal environment with an extensive tidal flat. Serpulids and other related tube-dwelling polychaetes are often ignored when found as fossil remains. They are, however, a widespread and important group today, and abundant literature has been published on them. Knowledge of fossil serpulids is centered on European material, and little has already been done on South American fossil calcareous tubes. In this paper, seven serpulid and sabellid morphotypes are described from the Early Cretaceous marine Agrio Formation of Argentina, revealing a diversity of worms recorded as encrusters on bivalves, ammonites and corals. Sabellids are represented by Glomerula cf. serpentina. Serpulids are represented by two subfamilies: “Serpulinae” includes Mucroserpula mucroserpula, Parsimonia antiquata, Placostegus cf. conchophilus, Propomatoceros semicostatus and P. sulcicarinatus; Spirorbinae is represented by heavily worn tiny coiled tubes assigned to ?Neomicrorbis. Serpulids and sabellids are one of the main components of the mollusk-encrusting fauna recorded in the Agrio Formation, along with small oysters but much more diverse. They are most commonly found as post-mortem encrusters, but some cases of unquestionable living interaction are also found, such as serpulid tubes embedded on coral branches. They are often overgrown by bryozoans, and sometimes by oysters; they frequently occur aggregated.  相似文献

Upper Maastrichtian to lower Paleocene, coarse‐grained deposits of the Lefipán Formation in Chubut Province, (Patagonia, Argentina) provide an opportunity to study environmental changes across the Cretaceous–Palaeogene (K–Pg) boundary in a shallow marine depositional environment. Marine palynological and organic geochemical analyses were performed on the K–Pg boundary interval of the Lefipán Formation at the San Ramón section. The palynological and organic geochemical records from the San Ramón K–Pg boundary section are characteristic of a highly dynamic, nearshore setting. High abundances of terrestrial palynomorphs, high BIT‐index values and the occasional presence of plant fossils are indicative of a large input of terrestrial organic material. The organic‐walled dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) assemblage is generally dominated by Senegalinium and other peridinioid dinocyst taxa, indicative of high‐nutrient conditions and decreased salinities, probably associated with a large fluvial input. The reconstructed sea surface temperatures range from 25°C to 27°C, in accordance with the tropical climate inferred by palynological and megafloral studies. As in the Bajada del Jagüel section, ~500 km north‐north‐east of San Ramón, peaks of Senegalinium spp. were recorded below and above the K–Pg boundary, possibly related to enhanced runoff resulting from more humid climatic conditions. The lithological, palynological and organic geochemical records suggest the occurrence of a sea‐level regression across the K–Pg boundary, resulting in a hiatus directly at the boundary in both sections, followed by a transgression in the Danian.  相似文献

Natural and anthropogenic boundaries have been shown to affect population dynamics and population structure for many species with movement patterns at the landscape level. Understanding population boundaries and movement rates in the field for species that are cryptic and occur at low densities is often extremely difficult and logistically prohibitive; however genetic techniques may offer insights that have previously been unattainable. We analysed thirteen microsatellite loci for 739 mountain lions (Puma concolor) using muscle tissue samples from individuals in the Great Basin throughout Nevada and the Sierra Nevada mountain range to test the hypothesis that heterogeneous hunting pressure results in source‐sink dynamics at the landscape scale. We used a combination of non‐spatial and spatial model‐based Bayesian clustering methods to identify genetic populations. We then used a recently developed Bayesian multilocus genotyping method to estimate asymmetrical rates of contemporary movement between those subpopulations and to identify source and sink populations. We identified two populations at the highest level of genetic structuring with a total of five subpopulations in the Great Basin of Nevada and the Sierra Nevada range. Our results suggest that source‐sink dynamics occur at landscape scales for wide‐ranging species, such as mountain lions, and that source populations may be those that are under relatively less hunting pressure and that occupy refugia.  相似文献

The benthic macrofaunas of the Upper Cretaceous chalk of NW Europe show characteristically high species‐richnesses and commonly high densities. They are predominated by bivalves, brachiopods, polychaetes, echinoids, crinoids, asteroids, sponges and towards the end of the Cretaceous also by bryozoans. The mound‐bedded chalk of the Coniacian Arnager Limestone on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, Denmark, differs from this general picture. It was deposited on a small fault block adjacent to the main Bornholm block, which was emerged during much of the Mesozoic and thus occupied a much more proximal position than most other Upper Cretaceous chalks in NW Europe. The Arnager Limestone contains a unique, exceptionally rich and well‐preserved fauna of mainly hexactinellid, lyssacinosan sponges. The low mud‐mounds are interpreted as formed by baffling and trapping of fine sediment particles by the dense sponge thickets. In contrast, the associated shelly fauna is unusually sparse, of very low richness and extremely low density, except for inoceramid bivalves. It represents a strongly depauparated version of the shelly faunas of contemporaneous chalks in NW Europe. The rare specimens of non‐inoceramid shelly species are interpreted to represent occasional successful spatfalls of benthic species from the deeper‐water chalk farther offshore in the Baltic area. The sponge mud‐mounds of the Arnager Limestone show remarkable resemblances with modern sponge mounds recently discovered on the continental shelf of western Canada. They form an important link between the well‐known older Mesozoic sponge mud‐mounds or ‘reefs’ and the modern mounds and are among the youngest examples of Mesozoic sponge mounds.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation can produce metapopulations or source‐sink systems in which dispersal in crucial for population maintenance. Our objective was to investigate connectivity among black‐capped vireo (Vireo atricapilla) populations in tandem with a demographic study (Biological Conservation, 2016, 203, 108–118) to elucidate if central Texas populations act as a source‐sink system. We genotyped 343 individuals at 12 microsatellite loci to elucidate the movement ecology of the black‐capped vireo in central Texas surrounding Fort Hood; the largest and most stable breeding population of black‐capped vireos inhabit Fort Hood. To gain insight into gene flow among populations, we analyzed genetic differentiation, migration rates, number of migrants, and parentage. We found statistically significant, but low levels of genetic differentiation among several populations, suggesting some limited restriction to gene flow. Across approaches to estimate migration, we found consistent evidence for asymmetrical movement from Fort Hood to the other central Texas sites consistent with source‐sink dynamics. Our results are complementary to black‐capped vireo demographic studies done in tandem showing that portions of Fort Hood are acting as a source population to smaller central Texas populations.  相似文献

Human cystic echinococcosis is a highly endemic zoonotic disease in the province of Neuquén, Patagonia Argentina, although a hydatid control programme has been carried out since 1970. Human infection due to Echinococcus canadensis (G6 genotype) is frequent in Neuquén. However, the reservoir for this species remains undetermined in a region where camels are absent. We investigated the fertility, viability and molecular epidemiology of hydatid cysts obtained from local goats, pigs and sheep in order to identify the possible reservoirs of E. canadensis (G6). We also analyzed isolates from infected dogs. A total of 67 isolates were identified by the DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene. Cysts from sheep (n = 16), goats (n = 23) and pigs (n = 18) and adult worms from 10 infected dogs were analyzed. The fertility of the hydatid cysts was 78.6%; 90.4% and 94.4% for sheep, goats and pigs, respectively. We detected E. canadensis (G6) in 21 of 23 goat samples and in 1 dog isolate, E. canadensis (G7) in all the pig isolates, E. granulosus sensu stricto (G3) in 1 sheep and the G1 genotype in 15 sheep, 2 goats and 9 dog samples. The G1 haplotypes included the common sheep strain sequence and 2 microvariants of this sequence. E. granulosus sensu stricto (G3) is described for the first time in South America. We conclude that goats act as reservoir for E. canadensis (G6) in Neuquén, and that control strategies may have to be adapted to local molecular epidemiology to improve the control of parasite transmission.  相似文献

Abstract: ‘Totanuslartetianus, Elorius paludicola and ‘Tringagracilis are the three scolopacid birds from the early Miocene of Saint‐Gérand‐le‐Puy described by the French palaeontologist Milne‐Edwards in the 19th century. Since then, no revision of these taxa has been performed. Our re‐examination revealed that not much of the material originally assigned to ‘Totanuslartetianus can be retained within the species. Presumably plesiomorphic features of the humerus – and potentially the coracoid we attributed to this taxon – indicate that it is misplaced in the extant scolopacid genus and may not even belong to the Scolopacidae (sandpipers and allies), and we therefore place it in the new genus Scolopacimilis. Comparisons of the material assigned to Elorius paludicola and ‘Tringagracilis show that they are morphologically similar, both exhibiting distinct scolopacid anatomical features. The latter, however, cannot be referred to the extant taxon Tringa and is classified into the new genus Parvelorius. We further introduce three new species, ?Elorius limosoides sp. nov., and ?Parvelorius calidris sp. nov., which we have tentatively assigned to the extinct scolopacid genera Elorius and Parvelorius, respectively, and Becassius charadriioides gen. et. sp. nov., which, together with Scolopacimilis, display a morphology uncharacteristic for extant Scolopaci. For the first time we have assigned skulls to some of the postcranial elements described in this study. The presence of at least six species of Scolopaci from the early Miocene considerably increases the number of members of the group known from this time.  相似文献

The recognition of areas of endemism (AEs) is important for conservation biology and biogeographical regionalization. Our objective was to quantitatively identify AEs and distributional congruence patterns of native rodents at the tropical/temperate transition in the central Andes. We analysed 6200 geo‐referenced distributional records of 80 species in north‐western Argentina using NDM/VNDM software. We found 20 AEs defined by 22 endemic species (27% of the total rodent fauna) and 34 patterns of distributional congruence in non‐endemic rodents. Geographical range congruence follows two main patterns running parallel along the Andes. One is related to the humid eastern slopes of the Andes (Argentinean Yungas forest) and the other to the high Andes (Argentinean Puna plateau). Endemism was mainly restricted to the southernmost part of the Yungas forest and adjacent dryer valleys (Monte desert). Species diversity was highest in the northern sector of the Argentinean Yungas forest, where several species reach their southern distributional range. This incongruence among hotspots of diversity and endemism has also been also noted in diversity studies at continental and global scales. Our results provide a starting point for conservation planning in the southernmost Central Andes, which combines the taper of tropical diversity and range‐restricted species endemic to the tropical–temperate transition. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 112 , 163–179.  相似文献

Deposits from the Ordos Basin of mid-western China are rich in body fossils and ichnofossils of Early Cretaceous vertebrates. Thousands of Early Cretaceous sauropod, theropod and bird tracks described since 1958 have been found at several localities in the basin. We report two new sites (Dijiaping and Bawangzhuang) in the Luohe Formation of the Ordos Basin, Shaanxi Province, which contain small theropod footprints that are here referred to the ichnogenus Jialingpus. The assignment is based on pad configurations including (1) the large metatarsophalangeal area positioned in line with the axis of digit III, (2) the subdivision of this part into a small pad behind digit II, which in some specimens is close to the general position of the hallux (digit I), and a large metatarsophalangeal pad behind digit IV, and (3) a distinct inter-pad space between metatarsophalangeal pads and proximal phalangeal pads of digits II and III. We re-describe the type material of the type ichnospecies Jialingpus yuechiensis from the Upper Jurassic Penglaizhen Formation of Sichuan Province, proposing a largely amended diagnosis for this ichnotaxon. The presence of a digit I trace in the holotype, indicating a relatively long hallux, and the large metatarsophalangeal area positioned in line with digit III distinguishes Jialingpus from the ichnogenus Grallator and similar tracks that all lack these features. The only difference between Jialingpus specimens from the Cretaceous of the Ordos Basin and those of the Jurassic Penglaizhen Formation is the larger digit divarication in the Cretaceous taxon. This is the fourth record of Jialingpus in China and the second in Cretaceous strata, with the first being those from the Huangyangquan locality in Xinjiang, China.  相似文献

The fossilierous bonebeds of Scontrone (Abruzzo region, central Italy) are preserved in tidal‐flat aeolian calcarenites at the base of the Lithothamnion Limestone, a Miocene carbonate ramp widespread in the central‐southern Apennines. The site bears evidence of a catastrophic event at 9 Ma. Reported are the results of the palaeobiological and taphonomic analysis conducted on the rich vertebrate assemblage, particularly on the remains of Hoplitomeryx (Mammalia, Artiodactyla, Ruminantia), recovered from the so‐called Scontrone calcarenites between 1992 and 2012. This is the first taphonomic study of a Late Miocene continental bone assemblage preserved in coastal deposits. The bones are not in primary context. They were likely exhumed during the initial phase of a marine transgression after a period of primary ‘storage’ within a possibly flood‐generated deposit in an estuarine environment. The mortality patterns indicate that the carcasses accumulated in a short time (within a year). The bones of the disarticulated skeletons were then removed, broken in a dry and brittle state, scattered over wide carbonate ramps along an arid to semi‐arid, wind‐exposed coastline and eventually buried again in aeolian calcarenites that drape transgressive tidal‐flat creek deposits. The analysis also reveals that hoplitomerycids were possibly seasonal reproducers and that the land they inhabited, the so‐called Apulia Platform, was probably swept by sudden, disastrous, storm‐supplied flash floods.  相似文献

Scorpions are one of the most important taxa for ecological, conservation, and biogeographic studies. Biodiversity in the pampean grassland hilly environment is relevant because of the high number of native plant and animal taxa. We studied the diversity, abundance and phenology of a scorpion community in a natural reserve from central Argentina. Samples were taken monthly using 10 pitfall traps. Five species of scorpions (269 individuals) were observed in the study site (Bothriuridae). Bothriurus prospicuus was the most abundant species with 40.15% of the total individuals captured. The Shannon index was H´ = 0.69 and the evenness index was 0.83. Scorpion abundance was significantly different between months and was significantly correlated with monthly mean temperature. The knowledge on the scorpion fauna in “Ernesto Tornquist” Provincial Park could help in the preservation of natural grassland habitats.  相似文献
