Components of biodiversity are strongly scale dependent, but the relative importance of the patterns that operate at different scales and the links between them have been overlooked. To disentangle the ecological structure of Cambro‐Ordovician trilobite assemblages from the Argentine Cordillera Oriental at different scales, we explore patterns of abundance, dominance and occupancy across the onshore–offshore profile, and through three time intervals: Furongian, earliest Late Tremadocian (Tr2), latest Middle Floian–earliest Late Floian (Fl2–Fl3). At the regional scale, single taxa are overwhelming dominant in the Furongian (Parabolina) and in the earliest Late Tremadocian (Leptoplastides). Several dominants occur in the Floian, but just one (Famatinolithus) attains high occupancy and, rarely, high dominance. In contrast, only the Furongian records highly dominated local assemblages, whereas dominance distinctly decreases among Tr2 and Fl2–Fl3 ones. Thus, when both scales of analysis are combined, an unexpected scenario becomes evident: Tr2 assemblages resemble those of the Furongian at the regional scale, but mirror those of the Floian at the local scale. These results highlight a decoupling in local versus regional structures triggered by an earlier switch in dominance in local communities and a delayed change at the regional scale. Interestingly, this decrease in local dominance matches previous analyses accounting for a coeval step‐up in local evenness, suggesting that the Tr2 appears as a pivotal interval in the reorganization of communities in the Cordillera Oriental. This scenario emphasizes that biogeographical regions witnessed different regional‐scale processes, and suggests that scaling local and regional patterns provides new insights to unravel the history of biodiversity among benthic communities.  相似文献

The hierarchical structure of biodiversity from a regional scale analysis has received much attention as an alternative approach to unravelling the principal drivers of biodiversification. To better understand the processes that control the diversification of Cambro‐Ordovician trilobite communities from the Argentine Cordillera Oriental, we explore patterns of occupancy and diversity trajectories at the local and regional scales through seven intervals (Furongian, loTr1, upTr1, loTr2, upTr2, Tr3 and Fl2–3), and across an onshore‐offshore profile. Our results indicate: (1) a decrease in regional diversity from the upper Tr2 onwards, mainly caused by a reduction in the number of rare taxa, coupled with stable beta diversity at regional scale and a constant rise in beta diversity in deep subtidal environments; (2) a higher proportion of regional diversity allocated to the within‐habitat beta component; and (3) that changes in gamma diversity are driven primarily by changes in alpha diversity during the Furongian–Tr3, whereas in the Floian, beta diversity seems to modulate regional diversity. These trends and associated patterns indicate increasing ecological differences among taxa, shifting from metacommunities where most taxa have similar ecological preferences or ‘Hubbell type’ to metacommunities with high niche differentiation or ‘Hutchinson type’. Interestingly, the timing of this shift coincides with the regional‐scale turnover between trilobite evolutionary faunas suggesting that the rise in niche differentiation among these genera may be related to the transition. Superimposed on this general trend, particular diversity structures can be understood in the light of metacommunity dynamics, such as dispersal limitation and mass effect.  相似文献

Balseiro, D., Waisfeld, B.G. & Buatois, L.A. 2010: Unusual trilobite biofacies from the Lower Ordovician of the Argentine Cordillera Oriental: new insights into olenid palaeoecology. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 58–75. The study of biofacies has proven to be relevant in the understanding of trilobite palaeoecology, palaeobiogeography and macroevolution. The widespread Olenid biofacies is one of the best known, and is usually interpreted as occuring in dysoxic environments. Tremadocian successions of the Argentinian Cordillera Oriental bear a diverse and long‐studied olenid‐dominated fauna. Based on cluster analysis, five distinct biofacies are defined for the middle Tremadocian (Tr2 stage slice), distributed from shelf (below storm wave base) to lower‐shoreface settings (above fair‐weather wave base). Ordination shows biofacies along two gradients, a bathymetrical one and another related to oxygen content. All of them are dominated both taxonomically and ecologically by olenids. This detailed quantitative palaeoecological study challenges current views suggesting instead that the Olenidae dominated a broad range of environments, from oxygenated shallow‐marine to dysoxic deep‐marine. Comparisons with largely coeval trilobite records from geodynamically and palaeobiogeographically disparate sites suggest that siliciclastic sedimentation appears as the most influential controlling environmental factor upon olenid distribution and dominance. Further comparisons across different climatic belts show that siliciclastic input controlled trilobite diversity gradients, even more than latitude. From an autoecological viewpoint distribution of traditional olenid morphotypes shows no relation to depth or to oxygen content, and at least some members of the group appear to have had the possibility of coping with low oxygen content, rather than being restricted to oxygen‐deficient environments. Community evenness has recently received much attention, either because it is related to ecosystem functioning or because it may affect estimation of diversity. Temporal and environmental trends in diversity and evenness of trilobite communities during the Late Cambrian – Early Ordovician of the Cordillera Oriental (north‐western Argentina) are here analysed. Richness and evenness increase through time in both deep subtidal (between fair‐weather and storm wave base) and offshore (below storm wave base) communities. Two significant patterns are superimposed on this general trend: (1) the magnitude of the increase in evenness is much more pronounced in deep than in shallower settings, and (2) richness and evenness trajectories are decoupled (while a significant rise in evenness is recorded in the middle Tremadocian (Tr2), an increase in richness is delayed until the late Tremadocian (Tr3)). In contrast to expectations, a single family (Olenidae) is dominant in samples associated with this earlier rise in evenness relative to richness. Hence, this trend is explained neither by the number of families present in the communities nor by the familial identity of the most abundant taxon. Large‐scale comparisons of the timing and geographical components of these trends are restricted to the patterns recognized in Laurentian North American studies. Results from the Cordillera Oriental mirror those of Laurentia regarding the rise in both metrics in deep marine settings. Nevertheless, the timing of this increase in richness and evenness is delayed in the Cordillera Oriental, supporting the idea that palaeogeographical regions differed in the nature and timing of ecological changes. Finally, the rise in trilobite alpha‐diversity through the Late Cambrian – Early Ordovician of the Cordillera Oriental supports the idea that trilobite alpha‐diversity did not decline worldwide, suggesting that the relative decline in trilobite alpha‐diversity is most probably caused by the dilution effect.  相似文献

We analyzed new occurrences of Azygograptus lapworthi from the Cordillera Oriental, Argentina. The bearer sandstones levels, corresponding to the Acoite Formation, are overlying the deposits, in which the Didymograptellus bifidus Biozone (Lower Ordovician, upper Floian, Fl3) was previously recognized, and are overlain by younger pelitic levels yielding Xiphograptus lofuensis (Middle Ordovician, early Dapingian, Dp2). Previous records from the Central Andean Basin are also reviewed in detail and accurately correlated, allowing us to conclude that the Azygograptus lapworthi Biozone corresponds to the Middle Ordovician (lower Dapingian, Dp1). This biostratigraphic framework documents that the transition between the Lower and Middle Ordovician deposits occurs in the uppermost levels of the Acoite Formation in the Argentine Cordillera Oriental. It is additionally integrated with up to date conodont records to establish a high-resolution regional correlation, with equivalent deposits from the Puna of northwestern Argentina and Cordillera Oriental of Bolivia, and to discuss new insights for global correlation.  相似文献

Major ecological transitions among evolutionary faunas are matters of continual debate. Our study analyses the timing and mode of replacement of Ibex I and II Trilobite Evolutionary Faunas (TEF) in Lower Ordovician successions of northwestern Argentina, with special emphasis on olenids and asaphids as key groups of the Ibex I and Ibex II faunas, respectively. We explore richness by using the sample rarefaction method, and occupancy based on a presence–absence dataset. The late Tremadocian 2 (Tr2) represents an inflexion point in richness and occupancy trajectories of asaphids and olenids. While olenids diminish their generic richness through time, asaphids became the richest family since the Tr3 predating the global trend recognized for the expansion of the Ibex II Fauna. Asaphids gained diversity at the expense of other trilobites as well, their rise in diversity lags behind the increase in occupancy suggesting a displacement scenario as the probable mode of replacement between the Ibex I and II TEFs. Apparently, the processes of replacement variate among regions across the globe, configuring a complex global mosaic of regional patterns.  相似文献

The Pha Kan Formation that crops out at the Phra That Muang Kham section, south of Lampang city, was measured and sampled for ostracod analysis. We here report the occurrence of 29 species distributed among 14 genera. Four new species are described: Triassocypris phakanella Forel nov. sp., Leviella lampangensis Forel nov. sp., Bektasia yawella Forel nov. sp. and Hungarella poli Chitnarin nov. sp. The present data represent the first detailed report of Middle Triassic (Anisian) ostracods from the Sukhothai terrane and the first insight into diversity dynamics following the end-Permian extinction in this area. The ostracod assemblages of the Phra That Muang Kham section are discussed and document an important shift from siliciclastic to carbonate conditions, from a protected to an open marine environment, followed by a slight regressive trend up-section associated with repeated salinity fluctuations. This fauna illustrates the post-crisis recovery during the Middle Triassic and some hypothesis are issued on the distribution pathways of several taxa.  相似文献

A multivariate analysis was used to determine the faunistic relationships of the northwestern Argentinean graptolite faunas of Floian age to faunas from Baltica, Avalonia, Laurentia and SW China. A statistical analysis at the species level of the five geographic regions for the Lower Floian was performed with the classic Jaccard's index. The resulting affinity dendrogram shows stronger relationships between Early Floian graptolite faunas of northwestern Argentina and those from Baltica, with less obvious similarities to Great Britain (Avalonia) faunas and only weak affinities to North American (Laurentia) and Chinese (SW China) graptolite faunas. The statistical analysis confirms the paleobiogeographic relationships previously observed in other areas of the Cordillera Oriental, and supports the hypothesis that during the Early Ordovician, northwestern Argentina was located at middle to high latitudes, corresponding to the Atlantic Faunal Realm of cold water graptolite biofacies. The studied graptolite material from the Quinilicán and Agua Chica sections is preserved in shales and siltstones interbedded with fine to medium-grained sandstones corresponding to the lower part of the Acoite Formation. The biostratigraphic implications of the associated graptolites are briefly discussed, and Trichograptus dilaceratus (Herrmann), Acrograptus gracilis (Törnquist), Expansograptus latus (T.S. Hall) and Corymbograptus v-fractus tullbergi (Monsen) are described from the Argentine Cordillera Oriental for the first time.  相似文献

This paper discusses the extinction pattern of the Pliensbachian-Toarcian boundary (PTB) ostracod assemblages at the Almonacid de la Cuba section (Cordillera Ibérica, NE Spain), which has been recently proposed as auxiliary boundary stratotype for the PTB. The ostracod record shows that the main Early Jurassic ostracod extinction event occurred not at the end of the Pliensbachian, but near the top of the Mirabile ammonite Subzone, Tenuicostatum ammonite Zone (Early Toarcian). On the basis of the evaluation of PTB ostracod record, a new causal explanation for the Early Toarcian ostracod turnover is proposed. This paper suggests that a reorganization of surface and deep-water circulations caused by the opening of the Hispanic Corridor could have generated a mild cooling episode, finally affecting the survival of healdioid ostracods.  相似文献

Since diverse ostracod faunas in the immediate aftermath of the latest Permian mass extinction are mainly found within Permian–Triassic boundary microbialites (PTBMs), the idea of an ostracod ‘microbial‐related refuge’ has been proposed. Here, we report a diversified earliest Triassic ostracod fauna from the Yangou section in South China, where no PTBMs were deposited, providing evidence inconsistent with this ‘microbial‐related refuge’ hypothesis. In addition, a significant ostracod extinction is recorded, corresponding with the earliest Triassic mass extinction (ETME). This ETME of ostracods is associated with size increases and a length/height ratio (L/H) decrease, indicating varied evolutionary patterns of shape and size of ostracods through the Permian–Triassic (P‐Tr) extinction events. Although the nature of these biotic changes is somewhat unclear, the temporally varied ‘refuge zone’ scenario provides us with a window to reconstruct the environmental dynamics of ecosystem changes during the P‐Tr transition.  相似文献

Understanding how regional ecosystems respond to sea‐level and environmental perturbations is a main challenge in palaeoecology. Here we use quantitative abundance estimates, integrated within a sequence stratigraphic and environmental framework, to reconstruct benthic community changes through the 13 myr history of the Jurassic Sundance Seaway in the western United States. Sundance Seaway communities are notable for their low richness and high dominance relative to most areas globally in the Jurassic, and this probably reflects steep temperature and salinity gradients along the 2000 km length of the Seaway that hindered colonization of species from the open ocean. Ordination of samples shows a main turnover event at the Middle–Upper Jurassic transition, which coincided with a shift from carbonate to siliciclastic depositional systems in the Seaway, probably initiated by northward drift from subtropical latitudes to more humid temperate latitudes, and possibly global cooling. Turnover was not uniform across the onshore–offshore gradient, but was higher in offshore environments. The higher resilience of onshore communities to third‐order sea‐level fluctuations and to the change from a carbonate to a siliciclastic system was driven by a few abundant eurytopic species that persisted from the opening to the closing of the Seaway. Lower stability in offshore facies was instead controlled by the presence of more volatile stenotopic species. Such increased onshore stability in community composition contrasts with the well‐documented onshore increase in taxonomic turnover rates, and this study underscores how ecological analyses of relative abundance may contrast with taxonomically based analyses. We also demonstrate the importance of a stratigraphic palaeobiological approach to reconstructing the links between environmental and faunal gradients, and how their evolution through time produces local stratigraphic changes in community composition.  相似文献

Major changes in ostracod assemblages have been recorded in the Lower Jurassic of Western Tethys related to biotic crises of the Pliensbachian-Toarcian boundary and the Polymorphum-Levisoni boundary (Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event). The study is focused on the ostracods assemblages from Benzerka section (Traras Mountains, Algeria) and their comparison with sections from External Subbetic and Algarve Basin (South Iberian Palaeomargin). Three stratigraphic intervals coincident with the ammonite zones have been differentiated with important fluctuations in the composition of ostracod assemblages. In the ostracod assemblages from the Traras Mountains the turnover related to this benthic biotic crisis is shown by assemblages previous to the biotic crisis (uppermost Pliensbachian) mainly composed by families Healdiidae and Cytherellidae to assemblages just after the T-OAE (upper part of the Levisoni Zone) with assemblages dominated by families Protocytheridae and Polycopidae and the extinction of family Healdiidae (suborder Metacopina). The Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) probably resulted in restricted conditions but a barren interval due to oxygen-depleted conditions in this setting is not recorded. In this context, the change of components of ostracod assemblages looks gradual. In the Southiberian Palaeomargin, represented by the External Subbetic the turnover of ostracods assemblages is also recorded but the families involved are different than in Traras Mountains. Therefore, different phases have been differentiated in the ostracod turnover occurring from Upper Pliensbachian (assemblages dominated by families Pontocyprididae, Healdiidae and Bairdiidae) to end of Lower Toarcian (assemblages dominated by family Cytherellidae and the extinction of family Healdiidae). In the Algarve Basin the families Healdiidae and Bairdiidae were dominant previously to the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event. Differences in the composition of ostracod assemblages between Traras Mountains and External Subbetic may be related to the fragmentation of these palaeomargins related to early stages of rifting in the Western Tethys. Moreover, the incidence of oxygen-depleted conditions was higher in External Subbetic than in Traras Mountains where some ostracod genera survive during the biotic crisis.  相似文献

Wu, R., Stouge, S. & Wang, Z. 2012: Conodontophorid biodiversification during the Ordovician in South China. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 432–442. Analysis of the Ordovician conodontophorid diversity pattern for South China using normalized and total diversity measures reveals that diversity peaks occurred in the mid‐Tremadocian, mid‐late Floian, early Dapingian and mid‐Darriwilian periods. The conodontophorids radiated during the Floian, maintaining relatively high diversity into the early part of the Middle Ordovician until a significant diversity decrease occurred in the late Dapingian. A relatively low diversity level prevailed in the Late Ordovician. Three diversification intervals based on origination, extinction and turnover rates have been identified i.e. (1) Tremadocian to mid‐late Floian, (2) early Dapingian and (3) late Dapingian to early Darriwilian. Diversity curves for conodontophorids, brachiopods, graptolites, acritarchs and trilobites from South China are comparable during the Early Ordovician, although differences are apparent in the Middle and Late Ordovician. In South China, conodontophorid diversity reacted primarily to sea‐level changes during the Early and Middle Ordovician, when the peak of this biodiversification generally coincided with a transgression. The quantitative and qualitative study of the ostracod assemblages supported by the correspondence analysis (CA) allowed the reconstruction of the palaeoenvironnemental change during the Holocene in the sebkha Dreîaa of Skhira (Gulf of Gabes, SE Tunisia). Five phases were distinguished: the first phase (> cal. 6471–6874 yr BP) coincides with the first Holocene marine transgression following the deposition of the continental Holocene series. It induces the setting of an open lagoon where numerous Bivalvia, Gastropoda and marine ostracods lived. The second one (cal. 6471–6874 yr BP) is characterized by the development of brackish ostracods, high diversity index values and comparable percentages of the brackish, lagoonal and coastal assemblages. It corresponds to an open lagoon subjected to estuarine influences. During the third phase (cal. 3350–3752 yr BP), a marine environment, marked by the enrichment of marine ostracods, is evolving toward the closing. The settlement of the restricted lagoonal environments is linked to the building-up of sandy spit. At cal. 2839–3057 yr BP, the dominance of coastal ostracods, associated with coarse sands, show an open lagoon and probably a marine transgression evidenced by the progressive modification in the ostracods assemblages. After this transgression, the southern part of Sebkha of Dreîaa emerged and evolved towards the present state. The last phase, cal. 515–777 yr BP, is marked by a strong marine influence, in the northern part of the sebkha, with transport of marine Bivalvia, Gastropoda and ostracods towards the inner lagoon by means of storms. The rupture of sandy spits induced the introduction of marine macrofauna and microfauna which were accumulated and associated with charcoals and coarse sands.  相似文献

Cambrian-Ordovician sedimentary sequences crop out extensively in the area surrounding the Sarydzhaz River, a remote mountainous region situated in the eastern part of Kyrgyzstan. These sequences, composed essentially of fine siliciclastic lithologies, were deposited on a passive margin of the peri-Gondwanan Karatau-Naryn microplate. Palaeontological constraints for the age of these sequences are rare. Recent efforts of geological mapping in the area discovered reasonably well-preserved radiolarian and conodont faunas. The occurrence of conodonts was mentioned previously, but no taxonomic details were ever reported. Two conodont assemblages are identified from the Oldzhobai Formation; the first is dominated by Paracordylodus gracilis, which can be correlated with the upper Tremadocian to lower Floian; the second assemblage is more diverse and characterized by Prioniodus elegans, suggesting a mid Floian age. This is the first discovery of Ordovician Radiolaria from Kyrgyzstan. In spite of its rather moderately good to poor preservation, the fauna is interesting in many respects, especially due to the presence of a new radiolarian species (Inanigutta (?) kyrgyza nov. sp.). The latter is easily identifiable by the distinctive pore pattern of its cortical shell and has therefore the potential to become in the future a biostratigraphic marker species.  相似文献

本文系统描述西藏南部聂拉木地区晚泥盆世–早石炭世介形类共计15属24种。根据介形类的组合面貌及孢子、牙形刺的研究结果推断,亚里剖面上的亚里组时代为晚泥盆世–早石炭世,泥盆系-石炭系界线(D-CB)大致位于亚里东沟段顶部至沟陇日段。亚里组产出的介形类生态组合属于光滑速足目集群或艾菲尔生态型,指示亚里组在沉积时为远岸浅水沉积环境,且在上部腊扎蒲段水深变浅。亚里组介形类面貌与华南泥盆纪介形类相似程度高,与俄罗斯和欧美地区也有相似的属种,说明泥盆纪-石炭纪之交介形类的地理隔离并不显著,在各个板块之间有属种交流的可能。  相似文献

The percentage of filter-feeder species in benthic ostracod assemblages shows evident changes during the Late Devonian Frasnian–Famennian (F–F) transition with two sharp rises in the event stratal interval based on materials collected from the Yangdi section, South China. Neither anoxia nor oligotrophy, eustasy should have been the only primary cause of filter-feeders signal in the F–F event. The sea level fall and rise would create deteriorative environmental conditions such as lower oxygenation and less nutrients, which altogether reduced the diversity and abundance of the benthic ostracods in the F–F transition. The percentage of filter-feeders showed a decrease during the regression, and vice-versa. Therefore, the filter-feeders may be potentially an indicator of sea level changes in the F–F event.  相似文献

1. The low‐Mg calcite shells of Ostracoda (Crustacea) are often well preserved in the sediments of alkaline lakes. In coastal waters that have undergone large temporal changes in salinity, ostracod assemblages preserved in the sediment record have been used to reconstruct palaeosalinity, often assuming that salinity is the only significant control on the faunas. 2. We evaluate the performance of ostracods as palaeosalinity indicators in Hickling Broad, a shallow brackish coastal lake in Norfolk, U.K., by comparing fossil ostracod assemblages covering two centuries with geochemical inferences and instrumental records of past salinity and water composition along with other palaeolimnological indicators. 3. Despite large changes in the salinity of the lake and the supposed salinity sensitivity of ostracods, the fossil ostracod assemblages do not clearly reflect the salinity trends inferred from the other independent data. Rather, a complex series of changes has occurred in the lake over the past 200 years and factors other than salinity, including eutrophication, toxicity and associated complex alterations in habitat availability have probably influenced ostracod assemblages. In contrast, there is a good broad agreement between inferred or measured salinity and the trace‐element chemistry of ostracod shells. 4. We conclude that ostracod faunas may not always provide unambiguous palaeosalinity records and should therefore not be used to reconstruct salinity changes except as part of a multi‐proxy investigation that includes other palaeoecological and/or geochemical indicators.  相似文献

The fossil record of terrestrialization documents notable shifts in the environmental and physiological tolerances of many animal and plant groups. However, for certain significant components of modern freshwater and terrestrial environments, the transition out of marine settings remains largely unconstrained. Ostracod crustaceans occupy an exceptional range of modern aquatic environments and are invaluable palaeoenvironmental indicators in the fossil record. However, pre-Carboniferous records of supposed non-marine and marginal marine ostracods are sparse, and the timing of their marine to non-marine transition has proven elusive. Here, we reassess the early environmental history of ostracods in light of new assemblages from the late Silurian of Vietnam. Two, low diversity but distinct ostracod assemblages are associated with estuarine deposits. This occurrence is consistent with previous incidental reports of ostracods occupying marginal and brackish settings through the late Silurian and Devonian. Therefore, ostracods were pioneering the occupation of marginal marine and estuarine settings 60 Myr before the Carboniferous and they were a component of the early phase of transition from marine to non-marine environments.  相似文献

Non-native aquatic macrophytes have invaded different types of ecosystems all over the world. The exotic submersed macrophyte Hydrilla verticillata recently invaded the Paraná basin, Brazil, being recorded by the first time in the natural habitats of this river in 2005. We investigated the effects of this species on ostracod assemblages and compared the abundance, richness, and Shannon–Wiener diversity of ostracod assemblages that colonize the invading species with those that colonize Egeria najas, a native submersed species with similar architecture and physical complexity. Fragments of these two species were left for 28 days in tanks to root and grow and then they were transferred to a floodplain lake where they remained in pairs (one plant of each species; N = 7) during 30 days for colonization by ostracods. A detrented correspondence analysis was used to summarize ostracod assemblage composition. Although there were no significant differences in ostracod abundance, richness and Shannon diversity when analyzed separately, cumulative curves, which permit to eliminate effects of abundance on richness, indicated a significantly higher number of ostracod species on H. verticillata. Assemblage composition was significantly different between both plant species, as shown by the first DCA axis. Our results show that H. verticillata might provide favorable habitats for native ostracod assemblages.  相似文献
