Foliage and bark samples were collected from the tree that provided the type specimen forJuniperus deppeana var.sperryi Correll, as well as from trees from populations ofJ. pinchotii Sudw.,J. flacida Schl., andJ. deppeana Steud. var.deppeana. These four taxa were compared using terpenoid and morphological characters. The terpenoid data suggest thatJ. deppeana var.sperryi is most closely related toJ. deppeana var.deppeana; no evidence of relict or present hybridization withJ. flaccida was detected. The morphological data showedJ. deppeana var.sperryi to be intermediate in several characters betweenJ. deppeana var.deppeana andJ. flacdda. The probability of a hybrid origin for this taxon is discussed. Due to the scattered occurrence of trees referable toJ. deppeana var.sperryi, it is proposed that this taxon be reduced in rank toJ. deppeana formasperryi.  相似文献

Summary Twenty-four populations ofJuniperus ashei were sampled throughout the range of this taxon and the terpenoids of the foliage were analyzed by gas/liquid chromatography. Population differentiation was investigated by analysis of variance and numerical taxonomy. Three south Texas and one Mexican population clustered together with the rest of the taxon appearing fairly uniform. No evidence was found of hybridization or introgression with other taxa. Disjunct populations in Oklahoma and the Ozarks, which have been genetically isolated from the central population for thousands of years, showed no signs of differentiation nor genetic drift. The present pattern of distribution probably dates from the Pleistocene. The south Texas and Mexican populations appear to be the primitive elements of the species. Populational differences have apparently been maintained in adjacent populations in spite of seemingly large gene flow and conversely, chemical uniformity is being maintained in many disjunct populations where there is little or no gene flow.  相似文献

A population of herbivorous insects that shifts to a novel host can experience selection pressures that result in adaptation to the new resource. Host race formation, considered an early stage of the speciation process, may result. The current study investigates host shifts and variation in traits potentially involved in the evolution of reproductive isolation among populations of the juniper hairstreak butterfly, Mitoura gryneus. Mitoura are closely associated with their host trees (Cupressaceae) and exhibit host plant fidelity: in addition to larval development and oviposition, host trees support male leks and mating. Female oviposition preference for the natal host, and differential fitness of larvae when reared on natal versus alternate hosts, are indications that specialization and local adaptation to the natal host plant are occurring. Populations with single host plant associations (Juniperus ashei, J. pinchotii and J. virginiana) as well as populations with multiple hosts (both J. ashei and J. pinchotii) were examined. Concordance between female preference and larval performance was found for J. ashei‐associated populations. Population‐level variation in the patterns of female preference and larval performance, both within and among host associations, may reflect differences in the timing and direction of colonization of hosts. For a single nominal species that otherwise exhibits no morphological or phenological differences, the experimental assessment of specialization and host fidelity in M. gryneus provides strong support for the hypothesis of ongoing host race formation in these butterflies.  相似文献

Eight OTUs of Juniperus deppeana were collected and their volatile leaf oils analysed by GC/GCMS. The volatile oils are dominated by oxygenated terpenes such as camphor, linalool, cis-verbenol, 4-terpineol, verbenone, borneol and trans-sabinene hydrate. The major monoterpene found was α-pinene. Sesquiterpenoids were minor components of the volatile leaf oils. The six named taxa were only distinguished by combinations of terpenoid characters. The differentiation of the Arizona J. deppeana (var. pachyphlaea ?) and J.d. forma sperryi from the other taxa in Mexico was the major subdivision found. Juniperus deppeana forma sperryi was clearly distinguished as were J.d. var. robusta and J.d. var. patoniana.  相似文献

The composition of the leaf essential oils of ten populations of Juniperus excelsa complex in Iran are reported and compared. Hydrodistillation yielded in 0.08%–3.78% dry weight (v/w) clear oils among populations studied. The oils are mostly dominated by α- Pinene, Limonene and β-Myrcene. The simplest oil was found in Qushchi (J. polycarpos var. polycarpos) with 25 components and the most complex oil was found in Lushan1 (J. polycarpos var. polycarpos) with 92 components. Quantitative data is presented for 164 components were found. The southern populations, Fasa and Khabr, show differences in composition of essential oils compared with other populations so that Borneol and isopinocamphone are diagnostic for them. These populations have been identified as Juniperus seravschanica in southeast of Iran and hybrid samples between J. polycarpos and J. seravschanica in southwest of Iran whereas other populations, as is confirmed in this study, are J. polycarpos. It is confirmed by essential oils data that there is no J. excelsa in Iran.  相似文献

Scrub oak populations in the semidesert area of northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah are ordinarily identified in regional manuals as Quercus undulata. They are very similar, both morphologically and ecologically, to Q. havardii of the Staked Plain of the Texas Panhandle and southeastern New Mexico. They differ, however, in a number of inconspicuous characters. Population sample analyses indicate that most of these differences are suggestive of Q. gambelii, and the deviant populations are thus interpreted as having been derived from ancestral Q. havardii through introgression by Q. gambelii. Two differences are not in accord with this interpretation; these are regarded as possible cases of transgressive segregation. Considering the evolution of these hybridized populations, it is speculated that the ancestral Q. havardii occurred to the south and west of the present range of this species during the Kansan period of the Pleistocene. During subsequent northward dispersal, it became split in two. The eastern portion ultimately came to occupy the present range of the species in the Staked Plain; the western portion—lying to the west of a north-south mountain barrier in central New Mexico—became introgressed by Q. gambelii (and locally by Q. turbinella), resulting in the present populations of Arizona and Utah.  相似文献

We analyzed phylogeographic patterns in the western spotted skunk, Spilogale gracilis Merriam, 1890 (Carnivora: Mephitidae) in relation to historical events associated with Pre‐Pleistocene Divergence (PPD) and Quaternary climate change (QCC) using mitochondrial DNA from 97 individuals distributed across Western North America. Divergence times were generated using BEAST to estimate when isolation in putative refugia occurred. Patterns and timing of demographic expansion was performed using Bayesian skyline plot. Putative climatic refugia resulting from Quaternary climate change were identified using paleoecological niche modeling and divergence dates compared to major vicariant events associated with Pre‐Pleistocene conditions. We recovered three major mitochondrial clades corresponding to western North America (California, Baja, and across the Great Basin), east‐central North America (Texas, central Mexico, New Mexico), and southwestern Arizona/northwestern Mexico. Time to most recent common ancestor for S. gracilis occurred ~1.36 Ma. Divergence times for each major clade occurred between 0.25 and 0.12 Ma, with signature of population expansion occurring 0.15 and 0.10 Ma. Ecological niche models identified three potential climatic refugia during the Last Interglacial, (1) west coast of California and Oregon, (2) northwestern Mexico, and (3) southern Texas/northeastern Mexico as well as two refugia during the Last Glacial Maximum, (1) western USA and (2) southern Texas/northeastern Mexico. This study supports PPD in shaping species‐level diversity compared to QCC‐driven changes at the intraspecific level for Spilogale, similar to the patterns reported for other small mammals (e.g., rodents and bats). Phylogeographic patterns also appear to have been shaped by both habitat and river vicariance, especially across the desert southwest. Further, continuing climate change during the Holocene coupled with anthropogenic modifications during the Anthropocene appears to be removing both of these barriers to current dispersal of western spotted skunks.  相似文献

Analyses of individuals classically treated as Juniperus oxycedrus L. var. oxycedrus from Morocco, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey, using DNA sequencing of nrDNA (ITS 1, 5.8S, ITS 2) plus RAPDs, leaf terpenoids and morphology revealed that two cryptic, genetically distinct but morphologically almost identical species are present. These species, J. oxycedrus L. var. oxycedrus and Juniperus deltoides R.P. Adams, are about as different from each other as Juniperus navicularis and Juniperus macrocarpa are from J. oxycedrus var. oxycedrus. Examination of herbarium specimens revealed that the two species are largely allopatric with J. deltoides occurring from Italy eastward through Turkey into the Caucasus Mts. and Iran. J. oxycedrus var. oxycedrus appears to be largely concentrated west of Italy (France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco). Cryptic speciation is discussed.  相似文献

Subtropical forests in China constitute the major expanse of evergreen broad-leaved forest in East Asia. The significant genetic divergence of the keystone tree species should be expected due to the huge geomorphological and environmental changes from west to east in subtropical China. In this study, a total of 652 individuals from 27 populations of Castanopsis fargesii throughout its natural range in mainland China were genotyped with eight chloroplast microsatellite markers to investigate genetic diversity, population differentiation, and demographic history of C. fargesii. Phylogeographic structure among populations of C. fargesii was evidenced by the permutation test, revealing that NST was significantly higher than GST . The strong genetic differentiation found among populations was well in accordance with isolation-by-distance model. In addition, significant isolation by elevation was detected among populations. Significant genetic differentiations were revealed among the west, center, and east regions by approximate Bayesian computations (ABC). The genetic divergence might reflect the regional responses to the fast and dramatic uplift of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and Wuyi mountain range in the Pleistocene. In the present study, contraction-expansion process was detected in the west, center, and east regions, indicating that geomorphological remodeling together with climatic changes in the Pleistocene had strong impact on genetic structure of C. fargesii.  相似文献

Juniperus brevifolia is an important woody species endemic of the Azores archipelago (Portugal), found from coastal to mountain environments. Due to colonization and grazing pressure this species has suffered fragmentation, leading to extinction in one island and being threatened in others. The genetic diversity and population structure of J. brevifolia populations was studied to provide guidelines for restoration and conservation programmes. Nuclear Single Sequence Repeats (nSSR) from Juniperus communis and Juniperus przewalskii and Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) were tested and results compared to test the transferability of the microsatellites to J. brevifolia. Samples from ten populations over three islands, divided as coastal, mid-altitude and mountain were analysed. Both marker systems revealed results statistically and strongly correlated with each other, and not dependent on population sample size. We observed positive fixation indexes, moderate to high levels of genetic diversity (h = 0.415 for nSSR and h = 0.245 for ISSR), low to moderate φpt genetic differentiation (0.070 for nSSR and 0.129 for ISSR) and high gene flow (Nm > 2.432). Regarding Nei's genetic distance the coastal communities clustered together reflecting the phenotypic plasticity, but no specific clustering was observed regarding φpt values. Therefore no populations with substantial genetic differentiation were identified, once the diversity is mostly observed within populations. However it is advised the continuous monitoring of J. brevifolia.  相似文献

The intra- and inter-population variation of Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. oxycedrus were examined biometrically on the basis of morphological characters of needles, seeds and cones. Cluster analysis of Euclidean distances and discriminant analysis were performed to verify the hypothesis of geographic differentiation and origin from the West- and East-Mediterranean Pleistocene refugial regions. The West-Mediterranean populations of J. oxycedrus subsp. oxycedrus differed from the eastern ones. The intra-populational differentiation of three of the West-Mediterranean populations was significantly higher than within the other West- and all the East-Mediterranean ones.Results confirm the hypothesis of probable different origins of the East- and West-Mediterranean populations of the taxon.  相似文献

Aim Numerous palaeoecological and genetic studies have shown that different tree species responded in very different ways to Pleistocene climatic oscillations. Some were forced into small refugia far from their current range, while others were able to survive in small refugia close to, or even within, their current natural range. In this study we examine the Pleistocene demography of a juniper species (Juniperus przewalskii, Cupressaceae) from the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau. Location The Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau (QTP). Methods Eight nuclear loci were sequenced in 141 individuals from 20 natural populations distributed across the entire natural range of J. przewalskii, and coalescent analysis was used to test demographic hypotheses. Results The overall nucleotide diversity in the sample was low (πsil = 0.0029), with few rare alleles and pronounced population genetic structure (FST = 0.181). We detected a division previously found using chloroplast DNA markers: all segregating sites in populations from the central part of the QTP appear to be a subset of those found around the edge of the plateau, confirming the relatively young age of the former. In contrast to the middle Pleistocene bottlenecks detected in boreal tree species, the coalescent‐based analyses failed to reject the standard neutral model for the juniper species considered here. Main conclusions Juniperus przewalskii did not undergo marked changes in population sizes during the Pleistocene, although this species seems to have experienced recent, post‐glacial expansion. This finding is largely consistent with the limited number of previous studies on conifer species of the QTP, but contradicts findings of studies on boreal species. These findings have wide implications for understanding plant species’ responses to past climatic oscillations on the high‐elevation QTP.  相似文献

Winter survival dynamics of Meloidogyne incognita and M. arenaria were studied at nine sites in Texas for 2 years. Population survival from October until April was variable among sites, ranging from 0.1% to 33%. A negative correlation (r = -0.86, P = 0.01) was observed between initial population, densities in October and survival percentage until the following April. Total population (eggs + J2) and population of eggs declined continuously during the survival period. Populations of juveniles (J2) increased initially, then declined. The total populations were 82% eggs in October; hatch of these eggs was believed responsible for the observed increase in the population density of J2. Viable eggs were recovered from the soil until March. Eggs are as important as J2 in winter survival of M. incognita and M. arenaria in Texas. Survival data were analyzed by a simple mathematical model.  相似文献

Genetic variation within and among six populations of Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb., in a common garden in Lakes District of Turkey, was analyzed using four nuclear microsatellite primer pairs originally developed for J. communis. A total of five loci were observed as Jc037 amplified two distinct size ranges. The number of alleles observed for the species varied from 2 to 13, with an average of 4.5 alleles per locus. The mean expected heterozygosity (H e) of populations was 0.584, after correction for null alleles. The mean F IS value (?0.014) was close to zero showing no significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. A low level of genetic differentiation was observed among populations (F ST = 0.028; p < 0.001) and Nei’s genetic distance ranged from 0.014 to 0.120 between population pairs. Furthermore, there was no significant correlation between genetic distances on the one hand and geographic distances and trait differentiation on the other hand. However, the eastern populations Bey?ehir and Sorgun showed very similar genotypic structures and were differentiated from all other populations. A continuous monitoring of phenotypic traits and the association between nucleotide variation in functional genes and adaptive traits such as drought and frost tolerance of J. excelsa populations in common gardens will be useful to design effective conservation strategies in the future.  相似文献

Summary Habitat specialization in populations of three broadly distributed trees includes adaptive differentiation to day length and temperature. Low sensitivity to environmental cues is the adaptive strategy of the southernmost populations (from northeastern Mexico). Early cessation of growth and sensitivity to the environment is adaptive for the northernmost populations (southern Illinois). Intermediate responses characterize trees of Texas. In a comparison under four photoperiod-temperature conditions, the Mexico plants were adapted to the longest growing season. Under out-of-doors conditions in central Texas, these trees from Mexico continue to demonstrate adaptive strategies different from those of Texas or Illinois trees. Stipule production and leaf area inPlatanus showed modifications correlated with latitude. Northernmost trees had the smallest leaves and did not produce stipules under 12-h day lengths and 24–15 °C temperatures. The Mexico trees had stipules under each of the four experimental conditions. The results suggest that populations of deciduous trees in a given climate are selected toward convergence in some responses to that climate. As a result, populations of the three trees resemble each other in behavior in a given ecosystem. Relationships between variation in cpDNA and morphology were examined to test the hypothesis of hybridization between Juniperus osteosperma and Juniperus occidentalis. Principal components analysis of 11 taxonomically-important characters distinguished individuals collected from eastern Nevada and Utah from those of southern Oregon. In contrast, many individuals collected from sympatric populations in western Nevada were morphologically intermediate to these two groups. Comparative sequencing of the trnS-trnG intergenic spacer and restriction site analysis of a trnL-trnF PCR product revealed nine haplotypes, and examination of haplotype-morphology associations allowed identification of species-specific genetic markers as well as those that transcend species limits. The confinement of morphological intermediacy and transcendent haplotypes to zones of sympatry, the discovery of haplotypes characteristic of one species in the morphological background of the other, and determination that the character intermediacy encountered is of the type expected under interspecific gene flow are marshaled in support of introgressive hybridization between J. osteosperma and J. occidentalis.  相似文献

Using isoenzyme analysis, 35 populations of Juniperus communis L. from various parts of the Russian species range and by one population from Sweden and Alaska were studied. The total sample size was 1200 plants. As a result, the existence of J. communis var. oblonga in North Caucasus and J. communis var. depressa in North America was confirmed, but genetic differences between J. communis var. communis and J. communis var. saxatilis were not detected in the main part of the Russian species range (European part of Russia, Ural, Siberia). These populations proved to be genetically uniform with the same predominant allelic frequencies, which may evidence recent settling of this species from one of Central or East European refugium. J. communis var. saxatilis from northeastern Russia inhabiting the region behind Verkhoyansk mountain and Russian Far East showed considerable differentiation in frequencies of alleles at three loci and geographical subdivision. These populations also exhibit high intrapopulation variation. This can be connected with the refugium in this territory. The origin of this group is probably connected with migrations from Central Asia (Tibet) in the direction to northeastern Russia along mountains connecting Central and North Asia. It is also assumed that migrations of this species previously proceeded across the Beringian land bridge.  相似文献

Amphidromy, characterized by freshwater adult and marine larval stages, has been shown to be an important influence on the genetic structure of aquatic populations. Sicydium salvini is a widespread goby species (Teleostei: Gobiidae: Sicydiinae) in the eastern Pacific with a continuous distribution from Mexico to Panama. Here, we use mitochondrial data to infer population genetic and historical demography of this species. Sequences were collected for the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b for 162 specimens sampled across the range of S. salvini with a concentration on rivers in Costa Rica. No genetic structure was detected between regions or rivers in the AMOVA analysis; the phylogeny for this species showed no geographic affinities and very little resolution. Historical demographic analyses indicated a population expansion during the late Pleistocene. These results are consistent with a panmictic population with expansion influenced strongly by Pleistocene glacial cycles and geologic uplift.  相似文献

Eleven polymorphic microsatellite loci were used to assess genetic variation in the ferruginous pygmy owl (Glaucidium brasilianum) from North America. Analysis of genotypic variation suggests restricted gene flow between pygmy-owl populations in Arizona-Sonora and Sinaloa, and Texas and the remaining states in Mexico. The Arizona-Sonora population showed signs of a recent genetic bottleneck, an observation supported by low population estimates for Arizona (13–117 individuals). Heterozygosity in Arizona, however, was equal to levels recorded throughout Mexico and Texas. Congruent patterns revealed by nuclear (microsatellites) and mitochondrial DNA that indicate Arizona-Sonora and Texas populations are distinct from adjacent populations in Mexico, thus emphasizing need for the design and implementation of separate management plans for recovery and conservation efforts. Revealing evidence of distinct groups within the pygmy-owl populations in North America, results from this study may be used to make management decisions for the recovery and conservation of this species.  相似文献

Sequences from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene were used to examine patterns of variation within and among populations of the ferruginous pygmy-owl (Glaucidium brasilianum) from both North America (including populations from Mexico) and South America. As currently conceived, G. brasilianum is paraphyletic, with North American and South American clades representing two distinct groups that should be recognized as the distinct species G. ridgwayi and G. brasilianum, respectively. Within the G. ridgwayi clade, populations from Arizona, Sonora, and Sinaloa are genetically distinct and share no mitochondrial haplotypes with populations occurring in Texas and other regions of Mexico. According to nested clade analysis this separation may be the consequence of past fragmentation that predates the origin of the Sonora desert. In addition, gene flow between the Arizona/Sonora/Sinaloa populations and the Texas/other Mexico populations is practically nonexistent, with estimates being approximately one individual every 10 generations. Collectively, these data suggest that the Arizona/Sonora/Sinaloa clade should be recognized as either a distinct subspecies or phylospecies from the group containing populations in Texas and the remainder of Mexico. These data should be used as guidelines for pygmy-owl recovery and conservation, as they meet the recommendations of task 3 of the pygmy-owl recovery plan that lists genetic data as essential information for pygmy-owl management.  相似文献
